Four coaches added, DC on deck

Expect Thom Kaumeyer to be named the Warriors’ defensive coordinator.

Kaumeyer, who coached the Jacksonville Jaguars’ DBs the past three years, and UH have reached a tentative agreement. A final stamp of approval is all that is needed to close the deal.

Kaumeyer and Tony Tuioti are expected to coach the linebackers.

Here are the other hirings announced today:

• Chris Wiesehan — offensive line. He previously was the receivers coach with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL.

• Tommy Lee — quarterbacks/receivers. The Saint Louis School graduate has coached at several colleges.

• Keith Uperesa — running backs. The Punahou School graduate has coached at USC, UNLV and, most recently, Nicholls State.

• Daronte Jones — defensive backs. He previously coached defensive backs  with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL.

Norm Chow arrives in town late today for the  first time since he was announced as UH head coach on Dec. 22.

Chow has said the majority of his staff will be in place this week.

“We’re going to work it,” Chow said. “We’re not going to take any time off.”

The Warriors already have received two commitments from linemen. They are bringing in six prospects for recruiting visits this weekend.

Yes, that was quarterback Taylor Graham on campus. He is officially enrolled at UH.

* * * * *

The volleyball Warriors have picked up a big-time recruit — outside hitter Stephen Maar of Aurora, Ontario.

He’s nearly 6-9, and has earned MVP honors in international tournaments. He’s considered one of the top volleyball players in Canada.

Just a thought, of course, but Gov. Abercrombie yesterday wondered aloud about the possibility of the UH sand volleyball team playing matches in the Natatorium.

Abercrombie was at UH yesterday afternoon to declare the day in honor of the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team.

The big question should be answered soon. The defensive coordinator is?

Excited to see the entire staff.

    Welcome home Coach Chow.

Judging by the Hawaiian Style attire of the Wahine VB team I’m guessing it was a low key affair.

Did the Hawai`i Sports Reporter of the Year get an attaboy article in the Star? I won’t buy the Star or pay to read it on the Internet because it’s owned by a foreigner.

I am hearing Montreal Canadians assistant Daronte Jones has accepted the defensive backs job at Hawaii.

  12. Bugaz January 10, 2012 8:15 am

    Welcome home Coach Chow!

On BC just now he heard there will be 7 coaches showing up at the Hukilau. Only 3 announced so far, so maybe four more announced today or tomorrow.

  13. ai-eee-soos January 10, 2012 8:18 am

    Daronte Jones …

  14. Stephen Tsai January 10, 2012 8:18 am

They’ll be announcing them today, after they sign their contracts.

Fatty: The accepted part is correct; the official part, not yet.

  15. Hillmok January 10, 2012 8:21 am

Boy just what this program needed new attitude, and change of culture. I really like Norm’s “all business mindset”. After all…college football is professionalism in an amateur setting. Make us proud Norm!

  16. Iwonderwhytheyhateme January 10, 2012 8:23 am

He must have a thing for graduate assistants.

  17. Bowwar January 10, 2012 8:24 am

When is Chow meeting with the team? It was previously announced that he would meet with the team today…

I’m pretty sure there are some very anxious young men out there worried about whether their future remains at UH…Also, did Stump return to school?

  18. Irse January 10, 2012 8:24 am

Stephen, is Stump Godfrey still in school? I heard you on the Animals and you said that he was no where to be found a week ago but that was during the break. Now that school is back in session, is he still here?

  19. Stephen Tsai January 10, 2012 8:24 am

    Hillmok:

    I like his grinder approach.

He’s not even thinking of finding a house yet. He and some of the young coaches are going to be living/working out of the offices for the next month.

UH isn’t broken. It just needs a tune-up.

  20. Stephen Tsai January 10, 2012 8:26 am

    Irse:

    I don’t think he’s around anymore.

It was a unique deal. Because he didn’t receive his release, he indicated he was coming, showed up one day, and then — poof! — was gone. I hope he returns. He’s got a live arm.

  21. WarriorNY January 10, 2012 8:26 am

    Back to the Norm…

Wow, he is hiring all of these young guys. Very curious as to who will coach the defense.

  22. Bugaz January 10, 2012 8:30 am

Either of those to be announced happen to be the next DC?

UH sand volleyball team playing matches in the Natatorium.

Will be the Ultimatum but needs a little more fixing up tho

It will be a natural setting for National Match Event here in Waikiki not only for Wahine Sands

all is well, and ‘da beast’ is doing good. last season he played in only 6.5 games after dislocating his elbow against Wyoming. BUT, he was able to end up 2nd in sacks and still had over 20 tackles and was given Big Sky Conference Honorable Mention, 3rd time in 3 years.

we’re hoping for an injury free season, and get another run at the Big Sky Championship this season 🙂

    GO WARRIORS

    GO WILDCATS

  27. tommui January 10, 2012 8:35 am

“It is essential that we enable young people to see themselves as participants in one of the most exciting eras in history, and to have a sense of purpose in relation to it.”

The young coaches seem to be hard-workers. Hopefully they will be able to recruit and usher in the new age for UH football.

  28. tommui January 10, 2012 8:38 am

MIKEY #27 – and it gives the tourist people another thing to feature in their PR folders. Good for Hawaii and good for UH!

  29. papajoe2 January 10, 2012 8:40 am

ST, during the last year, we had a lot of redshirts and greyshirts like Stump. Do you know if everybody is attending school or did some of them leave with the exit of Coach Mac and staff? What about Justin Alo?

  30. papajoe2 January 10, 2012 8:41 am

ST, by the way, congrats on your award. Well deserved I might add.

  31. mikey January 10, 2012 8:47 am

Great Bio on Daronte Jones with #1 Defense in Div II now he can bring it up to Div I level and show us what he can do for the Warriors.

His defense has captured an aggressive, attacking scheme that has gained the Bulldogs high recognition, both at the conference and national levels.

    It gets better and better!

Get your season tickets, NOW! before its too late! We need to bring it to 40,000 level.

Doubling-up well maybe at least to 30K level?

  32. madeinhawaii January 10, 2012 8:50 am

I am booking for September 1st at USC and told coach Chow and the family so.

Thinking about BYU too but too bad they move it few weeks later.

People are telling me why go to Alabama, Florida and USC. We’re going to lose anyways?

I tell them it’s for the experience of big time football Mecca!

I’m still waiting for Oklahama and Ohio State arena.

  39. HawaiiMongoose January 10, 2012 9:05 am

I’ve said for the past three or four years that the Natatorium site could be converted into the premier beach volleyball venue in the world. Fill in the pool, renovate the existing seating, and add metal stands on the ewa and makai sides but leave the diamond head side open for the view. Talk about a TV-friendly location… not to mention a recruiting advantage!

  40. 808Bowler January 10, 2012 9:10 am

  41. mikey January 10, 2012 9:10 am

Anyone who saw Alabama crush LSU yesterday BCS National Championship would know the feelings and experience.

    Priceless!

they open up at Fresno State and then BYU in Provo (I think UH plays BYU after us), so it’ll be a great start of a great season. Craig Stutzmann is the WR coach, and the 808 boyz are all jacked up……thanks for asking, and Happy New Year!

Heavenly condolences to the Packers’ OC Coach Philbin… one of Alex Green’s “bosses” – whose son has passed unexpectedly.

  50. kev-1 January 10, 2012 9:35 am

One day on the news, Joe Moore and Kanoa Leahey were talking about the Natatorium and what to do with it. Kanoa Leahey made the suggestion to turn it into a beach (sorry . . . sand) volleyball court.

Kanoa gets the cred (and others I’m sure too), not the gov.

  51. koakane January 10, 2012 9:35 am

  60. Ipu Man January 10, 2012 9:47 am

Natatorium should NOT be used for sand volleyball, but be

demolished except for facade. Raze the cement in the ocean

and bring sand to its beach and let the public enjoy it once

again every day, not just for an occasional sporting event.

  61. Kevin January 10, 2012 9:50 am

The Rainbow Wahine deserve accolades on an annual basis, but Jesus…

This guy is on a sinking ship called ‘Public Opinion” and he’s trying to use dinner napkins as floatation devices.

  62. tommui January 10, 2012 9:50 am

Re: Beach volleyball at the Natatorium:

I recall Kanoa Leahey talking about it with Joe Moore and HawaiiMongoose and one or two other Bloggers talking about it. And now the Governor talking about it.

No matter who gets the credit for originating the idea, let’s take the affirmative action and actually DO IT!

  63. (Jesse) James January 10, 2012 10:02 am

Good Morning Tsaikos….Hope all is well.

Good to hear all the excitement about UH Football…if nothing else.

  64. Kevin January 10, 2012 10:05 am

As with ANY facility in this state, preventative maintenance is key and is also… ABSENT.

  65. s.o.n January 10, 2012 10:06 am

    St

What’s up with Ellis Henderson is he here.

  66. SteveM January 10, 2012 10:07 am

    Good morning everyone!

Is sand volleyball a televised sport? If so, the Natatorium would be a great location with all of Waikiki beach and the ocean in the background. Great advertising for Hawaii.

  67. Piaa DS January 10, 2012 10:08 am

Sun God sends his regards to Hawaii. How does he look tanner than ever living in Texas?

  68. Kevin January 10, 2012 10:08 am

Natatorium or not, I think a beach area HEAVY with tourist traffic and popular as it is would be an ideal location for sand volleyball for UH as opposed to an on-site makeshift sand court at Manoa.

It’s easy, simple to make the connection.

Sand Volleyball = University of HAWAII = use a REAL beach setting.

  69. HawaiiMongoose January 10, 2012 10:11 am

I think the volleyball-at-the-Natatorium concept has been circulating for several years, certainly before I mentioned it. It’s a natural; anyone who follows the sport and knows about the Natatorium situation would put one and one together.

And I agree with tommui — with sand volleyball getting its start at UH, there’s a window of opportunity to rally support behind the idea and actually make something happen.

  70. AlaWai January 10, 2012 10:12 am

UH SVB should find a hotel willing to build a sand court with bleachers. The hotel would be a sponsor and supporter of the team and enjoy the PR opportunities. Go big time from day one. Hawai`i should be the Omaha for SVB.

  71. Annoddah Dave January 10, 2012 10:12 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

Is not the Natatorium a City and County facility? If so, how come the Gov did not know that…? May be he needs to check with the Mayor first.

  72. Wes'side Warrior January 10, 2012 10:13 am

    Howzit, everyone!

Every day brings new and exciting bits of info. Can’t wait to see it all come together.

  73. Kevin January 10, 2012 10:16 am

Logistically though, they would have to extend the portion oceanside since it’s all open ocean and no bleachers there.

    Oh God… why do I smell another EIS situation???? 😆 😆 😆

  74. Kevin January 10, 2012 10:17 am

Saw another pic of the gov standing next to some of the Wahine and just as I thought…. Some Rainbow Wahine are not close to there listed heights.

  75. Stephen Tsai January 10, 2012 10:25 am

Ellis Henderson is supposed to be here.

  76. Annoddah Dave January 10, 2012 10:26 am

    Kevin,

Yikes EIS! That may not be all, think Sierra Club, Nature Conservancy, ACLU, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Waikiki Aquarium (operated by UH, btw), Friends of the Aquarium, Queen’s Beach Society, Outdoor Circle, etc.

  77. Iwonderwhytheyhateme January 10, 2012 10:29 am

  79. whitey January 10, 2012 10:32 am

are we getting a db coach from the montreal canadians?? it will interesting to see a hockey coach coaching the db for da warriors. there is a montreal alouettes, cfl team, in the french speaking province, but who knows, coach might be from hockey team. hahahahaaaa

  80. SteveM January 10, 2012 10:33 am

Here’s a photo of the Natatorium from sea (albeit old). It has bleachers and a swimming pool declared unfit for swimming. So it makes sense to fill it with rocks and sand.

    http://natatorium.org/

  81. madeinhawaii January 10, 2012 10:35 am

Radio says that Coach Chow will be bringing 7 coaches with him tomorrow…

    Tuioti

    Jones – DB

    Rauscher – tight ends

    Powell – defensive line

    That’s 4…. who else?

  82. HawaiiMongoose January 10, 2012 10:36 am

There are a lot of Natatorium pictures online. Take a look at a few and it’s pretty obvious that the pool area, if filled in, is large enough to accommodate two volleyball courts plus bleachers on the makai side without any extension of the existing structural footprint. The main regulatory obstacle I’m aware of is that the existing shoreline use permit covering the Natatorium only provides for a swimming facility. It would need to be amended to add volleyball. And of course the actual construction project would require some kind of environmental assessment.

  83. whitey January 10, 2012 10:37 am

ralph, what’s happening to the raiders?? thought they did pretty good this year, but seems like there will be a directional change.

Rumor has it he is going to wash st. Hope not really wanted to see him play

  86. SteveM January 10, 2012 10:42 am

Some info from the natatorium.org site:

Hawaii’s 1921 Territorial Legislature funds construction of the Living Memorial with its 100 X 40 meter saltwater swimming pool…

Owned by the State but operated under and executive order by the City, the Natatorium is closed in 1979 due to thirty years of neglect. Prior to its closure in 1979, the last recorded public investment in capital maintenance was $100,000 in 1949. …..

Wow, the pool is much larger than I remember…

  87. madeinhawaii January 10, 2012 10:44 am

Who’s going to be the ball person when the ball gets hit into the water?

  88. kev-1 January 10, 2012 10:46 am

Maybe instead of just a sand volleyball court in place of the Natatorium for UH, it could be a recreation deck for the public to use too. Beach volleyball court, tanning areas, surfboard/water sport rental booth and launching point, etc. No sense just limiting it to UH sand volleyball. Whatever it is, it needs to be very low maintenance. Kevin makes a good point about that.

  89. madeinhawaii January 10, 2012 10:47 am

UH should ask for the rights to the shave-ice/icee/slush float concession!

  90. kev-1 January 10, 2012 10:47 am

I envision fans sitting in little boats watching the game too. Much like you see at the SF baseball stadium. Except they would actually get to see the game, instead of just waiting for balls to fall into the water.

  91. whitey January 10, 2012 10:49 am

mih, strech as the marketing coach, al as the recruiting and training table coach, pride as the research and guidance coach, d1 as the program and game management coach, and tommui as the counseling coach to the coaches in case they get in trouble.

  92. ai-eee-soos January 10, 2012 10:56 am

Yep, Ellis Henderson is supposed to be here.

    unless, he decided to leave.

  93. madeinhawaii January 10, 2012 10:57 am

    whitey…

I wonder how many lobbyists UH has? Do they have one for the Athletic Dept?

  94. madeinhawaii January 10, 2012 11:00 am

    Found a link … http://ilind.net/2010/02/06/three-public-agencies-among-leaders-in-lobbyist-spending/

Apparently Kam Schools spends more on that than UHPA…

  95. madeinhawaii January 10, 2012 11:01 am

But that’s UHPA, the union, not UH, the school.

  96. madeinhawaii January 10, 2012 11:03 am

    From the Scout forum..

I believe one coach’s initials are CD and he coaches defense and has east coast ties.

Another coach’s initials are CW. He coaches offense and his most recent experience is coaching WR’s.

A third coach’s intitials are LP with Hawaii and Utah ties.

Anybody got an idea who these guys might be?

  97. ai-eee-soos January 10, 2012 11:04 am

any suggestions for the Raiduz new head coach?

would be somethin if Gruden shows up again.

Hawaii Football Coach Norm Chow Says He’s Paid $550,000

Chow said after he accepted the job that salary had “nothing to do with” his return to Hawaii.

The main motivation, he said, was “the chance to come home.”

    http://www.hawaiireporter.com/hawaii-football-coach-norm-chow-says-hes-paid-550000/123

“I have a chance to come home, I have a chance to represent this university. I have a chance to represent this state. I have a chance to hopefully serve as an example to some and money has nothing to do with that.

I envision fans sitting in little boats watching the game too. Much like you see at the SF baseball stadium. Except they would actually get to see the game, instead of just waiting for balls to fall into the water.

That would make for a one-of-a-kind atmosphere for the sport and unique to Hawaii!!!

(Of course I can see visiting teams complaining that the boats are distractions.) 😆

  120. al_kiQaida January 10, 2012 12:23 pm

The Natatorium War Memorial Volleyball Stadium is such a no-brainer. ESPN, The HTA, our hotels and Waikiki businesses will eat it up. Imagine the views of Waikiki Beach, Diamond Head the TV cameras will send back to shivering recruits in the midwest and back east.

  121. al January 10, 2012 12:24 pm

mih…you should go camp out at the coaches’ offices this weekend. there you can get all the names of the first chow visits.

  130. Curt January 10, 2012 12:44 pm

    iwwthm & Graham,

As I mentioned previously, I was concerned when Mack hired some young assistants with very short coaching tenures. Now, we’re seeing some assistants who were recently GAs. In contrast, it seemed JJ’s staff had lots of coaching experience (Mack, Glanville, Mouse, Miano, Lee brothers, Lumpkin, etc.). Hopefully, they work their okoles off and it’s not an issue. For the DC position though, I really want to see alot of experience there.

  133. Curt January 10, 2012 12:48 pm

The good thing is Chow wants to hire the hard working, no-life-but-football types. I didn’t realize it before but we didn’t do too well with the local recruiting. I think Coach Chow will change that significantly.

  134. Kevin January 10, 2012 12:50 pm

15 years????? Nah, not even WWE puts people that old on TV. Maybe on another show.

Besides if this were WWE, we’d have our Pacquiao and Mayweather event years ago and we’d be talking about the 3rd series of matches between the two.

This Mayweather stuff calling him out on Twitter would not happen in WWE. What WOULD have happened is Mayweather interrupting a Pacquiao match with the distraction causing Pacquiao to get KO’d. Then Mayweather climbs in the ring standing over a KO’d Pacquiao and the screen fades to black…

THAT”S HOW YOU PROMOTE AN EVENT!!!!

  135. Kevin January 10, 2012 12:53 pm

Speaking of Mayweather and WWE, Mayweather did a “match” against the seven-foot 400lbs “Big Show” Paul Wight at Wrestlemania 24 at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, FL in front of 74,000+ fans.

By all accounts, Mayweather was reportedly very cooperative and respectful backstage to all the performers understanding this was their “territory” and not his.

Complete opposite of the persona he displays in the boxing world.

Greg McMackin- Defensive Coordinator: last job Seattle Seahawks DC.

George Lumpkin – Linebackers: previous job – Kamehameha Schools assistant, UH assistant (20 yrs).

Rich Miano – Defensive Backs: Last job – radio color, private business (no coaching experience).

Vantz Singletary – Defensive Line: previous job – Southern University Assistant.

Wes Suan – Running Backs: previous job – Linfield College Assistant.

Dennis McKnight – Special Teams: previous job: High School Assistant (San Diego).

Dan Morrison – Quarterbacks: previous job: Punahou School Head Coach.

Ron Lee – Receivers: previous job – St. Louis School Assistant.

Mike Cavanaugh – Offensive Line: previous job – Quality control San Diego Chargers.

  141. Old School Dave January 10, 2012 1:02 pm

Joe Seumalo – Defensive GA (now defensive line coach at Oregon State).

  142. Curt January 10, 2012 1:03 pm

    Kevin,

Are you vying to be the next Don King? You might have to change your hair style. Now, if only you could convince Mayweather to stop running away from Pacquiao, we would have a big-time event…maybe even at Aloha Stadium. Only in America…

  143. Couch potato January 10, 2012 1:09 pm

Pacquiao never look good in his last fight. Mayweather shooting for a may 5th fight, cinco de mayo, so he can delay his jail term. i say Pacman should let Mayweather sit in jail for awhile and fight at the end of the year. let’s see what Arum can do.

  144. Bowwar January 10, 2012 1:13 pm

Too bad about Stump…It would have made a great story…

  145. Curt January 10, 2012 1:15 pm

    Old School Dave,

Thanks for the research on JJ’s initial UH staff. I believe Ron Lee was previously an offensive coordinator for Mack at a small Oregon college in the northwest.

  146. Old School Dave January 10, 2012 1:16 pm

I know that Tommy Heffernan is a UH Athletic department hire, but it will be interesting to see is Norm Chow also brings in his own strength and conditioning coach. S & C coaches probably spend the most time with players, particularly in the off season. I’m sure this is another area that can be improved as far as developing players that are stronger, faster, quicker, leaner, and more durable. Saw some very lean and fragile looking players at the skilled positions and in the secondary this past season. Of course diet and nutrition also play a crucial role here, thus the need for a year-round training table.

Utah has its players who can’t practice do an assortment of “conditioning and strength building drills” on the sidelines during practice. The players come to dread those drills so much that they prefer to practice instead.

  147. Old School Dave January 10, 2012 1:17 pm

Curt: You’re right. I believe Ron Lee coached at Oregon Tech for a couple of seasons and was also a GA under Bob Wagner.

  148. Curt January 10, 2012 1:19 pm

    Bowwar,

It would’ve been nice to see Stump compete and rifle passes downfield to his receivers. Don’t know if he was accurate though. Whatever he decides, we wish him the best.

  149. d1shima January 10, 2012 1:20 pm

the gov sure says “ah” “ah” many times when he speaks. gets kinda irritating.

No worries, I am sure Michael Green has a plan.

He looks like a guy we can trust right??? (sarcasm)

  152. Kevin January 10, 2012 1:25 pm

Tommy Heffernan and his staff didn’t let players not able to practice sit idle on the sides either though.

The few practices I and others went to, you could see the S&C staff working with those players on the side as well.

  153. Bugaz January 10, 2012 1:27 pm

  154. Kevin January 10, 2012 1:29 pm

  160. Kevin January 10, 2012 1:35 pm

    Old School Dave,

You brought up how Utah S&C folk work the Utes to the point where they supposedly dread S&C workouts more than actual practice.

Gotta ultimately ask players themselves what they think, but for the most part, everyone that’s attended a handful of practices at the least has seen the S&C folk at UH at work constantly.

  161. Kevin January 10, 2012 1:37 pm

    Waikiki Natatorium War Memorial

On both the National and State Registers of Historic Places. Named to the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 11 Most Endangered list in 1995.

Being on the Historic register the only thing they can do to the Natatorium is fully restore it with no changes to the design. The only way to make any additions is if they are constructed as a temporary addition, meaning that they can easily removed and bring the structure back to the original design.

  166. Old School Dave January 10, 2012 1:49 pm

    Kevin,

I actually like Coach Heffernan and what he’s done with the football team. Actually met him once and had a brief, but nice chat with him. Very knowledgeable and approachable guy. You’re right in saying that it’s the players that have the most accurate assessments based on the fact that they spend the most time with the S & C staff. I still wonder how much of a difference a year-round training table can make with building bigger, stronger, faster, and more durable players.

I think it was Urban Meyer when he was at Utah who started the practice of making players unable to practice do other drills and conditioning on the sidelines at practice. The usual fare involving sandbags, monster truck tires, boulders in wheelbarrows, etc. Sounds like fun.

  212. kev-1 January 10, 2012 3:07 pm

    d1, I was reading this one . . .

“Tommy Lee relished time spent in Missoula”

    http://missoulian.com/sports/college/montana/article_2ec9b78c-aec6-11de-b838-001cc4c002e0.html

Apparently, he was also OC at UM-Missoula for 5 years.

  213. kev-1 January 10, 2012 3:08 pm

Oh, I see what you’re saying . . . Dillon, Montana. Got it.

  214. KeleguenBinadu January 10, 2012 3:13 pm

By my count there are openings for two more coaches: Defensive Coordinator & Special Teams Coach, plus two Graduate Assistants. Is that correct?

As to the new names, Tommy Lee is the only shocker for me.

UH Rainbowtique DOWNTOWN location CLOSING so they are having a 30% off sale.

Was never a big fan of this location and always believed they should have one at least in Waikele for Westward UH fans.

    Other locations remain as is.

  217. Iwonderwhytheyhateme January 10, 2012 3:22 pm

    Al,

Must be a big time hire.

  218. ai-eee-soos January 10, 2012 3:24 pm

hmmm … I wonder if Tommy Lee will be HC Chow’s eyes in the skybox.

Hope his vision is still like that of an eagle.

  219. Couch potato January 10, 2012 3:28 pm

when i saw the name Tommy Lee i immediately pictured Pamela Anderson.

  220. Darren January 10, 2012 3:32 pm

Thanks al…yeah, it’s been a while. We need more CCs in downtown…something happening at lunch tomorrow?

  221. BigHiloFan2 January 10, 2012 3:34 pm

tell you what. Seeing Tommy Lee on staff is amazing. and lets me know that some of the thoughts on this blog are subjective and way way off base.

Welcome to the Warriors Mr. Lee. Say hello to brother Cal from his admirer Big Hilo. he’ll know where to find me at the games, by the tunnel.

  222. DoubleB January 10, 2012 3:35 pm

    #207…please no K. Souza

  223. BigHiloFan2 January 10, 2012 3:36 pm

    223. could be. and wouldn’t surprise me if had back up there too. we’ll know when the time comes.

all I know is, exciting times at UH Football right now!

    Go Warriors!

  224. Manoa January 10, 2012 3:39 pm

Tommy Lee has been around for a long, long time– he and Mouse were high school coaches in Oregon. Tommy also coached at St. Louis High School for a year or two.

He has always been a legendary offensive mind tied to the passing game– he knows the spread out run and shoot which was in vogue in the Pacific Northwest after Mouse started it there. He is also a great QB coach. Rolo is like a much, much younger Tommy Lee with a very different background, but from a similar offensive school of thought.

    This hiring really surprised me.

  225. DoubleB January 10, 2012 3:43 pm

Wasn’t Tommy Lee on the Utah offensive staff as OC when McBride was HC ?

  226. al January 10, 2012 3:55 pm

    209…check.

  227. al January 10, 2012 3:56 pm

actually bugaz…its a great hire i think. if norm is going to be on the sidelines he needs someone in the box that he has faith in and trusts completely to be on the same page as he.

  228. primo123 January 10, 2012 4:02 pm

Who is Norm’s right hand man? the guy that’s gonna tell Norm when to call time outs in critical game situations?

  229. al January 10, 2012 4:05 pm

234…dick tomey, gordy shaw, and chris tormey and the like left with mack.

i am sure norm is sharp enough not to need that other voice in his ear.

  230. Chee Hoo January 10, 2012 4:15 pm

Brent Pease highly sought after OC at Boise St. was coached by none other then Tommy Lee. Carolina Panthers, WR Steve Smith, another of the greats coached by Tommy.

  231. rb January 10, 2012 4:17 pm

    #232 Bingo,Tommy Lee makes it go,go,go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Outstanding choice,just outstanding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    CHOW-ZIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  232. BigHiloFan2 January 10, 2012 4:36 pm

    i tell you what.

    Chow Time is Hammer Time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tommy Lee was neva seen coming down da track.

Until he was right in our faces!

    Go Chow!!!!! Go. Go. Go!!!!!!!!!!!!

  233. Graham January 10, 2012 4:37 pm

Does Tommy Lee bring any recuirting ties with him? Not to knock the 2 other Lee brothers because they were great for program but they werent strong recuirters within Hawaii or anywhere else. And for DC I have heard it is going to be Thom Kaumeyer but I have heard wrong before but I am almost positive.

  234. BigHiloFan2 January 10, 2012 4:37 pm

And baby bruddaz can claim all da glory!

    SPECTACULAR!!!!!!

  236. koakane January 10, 2012 4:45 pm

just read the news about the new hires. yes yes yes very exciting times go coach chow

  237. Bugaz January 10, 2012 4:47 pm

    Shux they going close practices!

  238. madeinhawaii January 10, 2012 4:48 pm

I guess Tommy Lee is somewhat like Chow’s equivalent to Mack’s Mouse Davis.

  239. BigHiloFan2 January 10, 2012 4:51 pm

    243.

betta than that. 3 fo 1. and in chinese culture. #1 rules. 😀

  240. Manoa January 10, 2012 4:55 pm

I think the objections to Rolo were that he was not from Norm’s system, but neither is Tommy Lee. Tommy Lee is closer to June Jones and Mouse Davis than Norm. Lee is wide open four and five receiver sets pretty much everywhere he has been including Utah.

Maybe Norm wants to bring in Tommy to work in some of the 4 and 5 wide (empty set) to use our wide receivers like Norm has suggested he might.

Tommy is a smart guy, though, it always seems to me that Offensive Minded Coahces have advanced degrees and Tommy Lee has a masters degree (Norm Chow doctorate, Rolo Masters degree, Leach Law Degree, Robert Anae Doctorate)– they are the smart guys.

  241. tommui January 10, 2012 4:55 pm

BUGAZ – how’s the gout attack?

  242. Guy in the office January 10, 2012 5:02 pm

Looks like Boise State lost its offensive coordinator:

Florida: Brent Pease has agreed to a 3-year deal worth $500,000 annually.

  243. Bugaz January 10, 2012 5:04 pm

Two weeks and going! Started in right toe as that started getting better it shifted to the left big toe. So the middle toe same foot got jealous so they tagging up on me. Just started new meds and the ankle same foot joined in last night. Started getting better today and daughter kicks it while we separating laundry. Her punishment…rubbing big toe right now. Lol

  244. BigHiloFan2 January 10, 2012 5:05 pm

“Tommy Lee relished time in Missoula” great article. this is a great time for the Lee family too.

Keep going Coach Chow. Go. Go. Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  245. Bugaz January 10, 2012 5:07 pm

    $500,000 annually! Damn

  246. madeinhawaii January 10, 2012 5:10 pm

    Interesting tidbit regarding Brent Pease…

In 2005, Pease became wide receivers coach at Boise State, adding the title of assistant head coach the following year. In December 2010, Pease was named offensive coordinator at Indiana University. However, he returned to Boise less than two weeks later, succeeding Bryan Harsin as the Broncos’ offensive coordinator.

Following the 2012 season, Pease was hired by the Florida Gators as their new offensive coordinator.

  247. tommui January 10, 2012 5:10 pm

No smart coach is married to a pure system. JJ is suppose to be the exponent of the RnS – yet watching the recent bowl game, he had tight ends, two backs etc.

Coach Chow is suppose to be an exponent of the WCO, yet he will go into a 4-5 receiver set. The Utah bowl game – what was it? Five passes and two running plays – hardly a “pure” WCO.

  248. ai-eee-soos January 10, 2012 5:11 pm

    # 247 – He should have asked for more; he could have gotten it or sure.

I think other SEC schools have paid more.

I gotta go see if I can find the salary of the Alabama OC – I think he had a big contract.

  249. ai-eee-soos January 10, 2012 5:14 pm

    # 253 … for sure …

  250. Manoa January 10, 2012 5:16 pm

Boise has been prepared to Brent Pease leaving.

It is almost a foregone conclusion that Robert Prince, a long time Boise assistant, will replace Pease as the OC he has coached under Petersen and with Hawkins at Boise and at Colorado.

He will build off of the Kellen Moore understudies who are more mobile, running QB’s. It will be a big adjustment for Boise with all the players they lose.

  251. tommui January 10, 2012 5:20 pm

BUGAZ #248 – I’m not a MD but colchicine was one of the old medications used for gout attacks despite the fact it can have toxicity effects. It is pills or injection.

As you know, gout attacks is a build-up of uric acid in the joints, usually in the extremities like the toe, ankle etc. Before colchicine, it was usually witch doctors shaking rattles or casting spells etc.

What colchicine does is give you the “runs” which flushes out the acid and everything else. Isn’t modern medicine great?

  252. Bugaz January 10, 2012 5:24 pm

    The “runs” definitely fun hahaha

  253. William Foster January 10, 2012 5:26 pm

  254. wafan January 10, 2012 5:36 pm

Kinda cruel to give someone the runs when the person can barely walk.

  255. WarriorNY January 10, 2012 5:37 pm

Scratching my head on Tommy Lee hire… I mean I hope it works out well but how awkward for the Lee family…

  256. Duncan Eleam January 10, 2012 5:40 pm

Seems we’ve been wrong about the republican-s; what we’d thought was their lack of concern for the middle class is in fact outright contempt for it! Don’t like being herded like cattle down the slippery slope towards wage-slave-ry? DO something about it: join the Occupation-s!swtor credits

  257. BigHiloFan2 January 10, 2012 5:41 pm

    260.

thats why I say there are things going on that we don’t know so no sense speculating, just enjoy the run. and shoots. 😆 howz dat tommui, bugaz? 😀

  258. d1shima January 10, 2012 5:42 pm

Not sure if Coach Lee will be in the box but when #1 son was playing in LaGrande we went to watch them host UM-Western.

Watching Tommy Lee standing on the opposite sideline, I was struck at the similarities that Cal had with his older brother. Mirrored shades, cross arms alternating with the two hands on the knees crouch and the burning stare….

After the game I mentioned that to my son. He told me, “I know, I seen him over there during the game and I never like screw up!” 😆

  259. BigHiloFan2 January 10, 2012 5:45 pm

just watch. if i’m dis jackt, da spell is on!

Go Chow Go. Go. Go. Go!!!!!!!!!!

  260. Stretch January 10, 2012 5:46 pm

Re: Tommy Lee – I have a feeling that Chow will need “eyes” in the box that he can trust to relay the information since it will be the first time he calling plays from the field.

  261. d1shima January 10, 2012 5:49 pm

    Graham,

Tommy was able to recruit a lot of Hawaii boys to Dillon…definitely no small feat! Even harder to get them to finish there, but he got it done!

With regard to the recruiting by the other brothers, I think the back story on that has been mentioned and the results weren’t an accurate reflection of the impact they could have made.

  262. BigHiloFan2 January 10, 2012 5:53 pm

    265. Agreed.

ahem… And fo alla yuz scratchin your heads about Tommy Lee, just remember….

    birth order counts. alot! 😀

besides, why don’t you talk about the other great hires? for instance, Uperesa. you wuzn’t sure, right? and now he’s here. 😀

yup, dis is a shishi moment. 🙄

  263. Kevin January 10, 2012 5:54 pm

    @262,

Very true… We can’t make any judgments on these hires till after next year… In Chow, We Trust.

There is an interview with Tommy Lee when he retired from Montana… The interview is a bit all over the place. He rambles a lot but just in case anyone wants to take a listen…

  278. Kevin January 10, 2012 6:12 pm

From the Jacksonville Jaguar’s site, for people like me that needs some info:

A veteran of 20 years in coaching, Thom Kaumeyer is in his fourth season working with the Jaguars defensive backs. His previous coaching experience includes stints as a college defensive coordinator, junior college head coach and NFL assistant coach. Kaumeyer played four seasons in the NFL as a safety for the Seattle Seahawks (1989-90) and the New York Giants (1991-92).

Kaumeyer spent 13 seasons as an assistant coach on the collegiate level. He served as defensive coordinator at Tulane in 2007 and was named defensive backs coach at Kentucky in January of 2008 before joining the Jaguars. In his one season at Tulane, the defense improved its national rankings in scoring defense, total defense and rushing defense compared to the 2006 season.

Prior to Tulane Kaumeyer spent five seasons at San Diego State where he served as defensive coordinator (2002-05) and defensive backs coach (2006). During his tenure at San Diego State, Kaumeyer developed the defense into one of the best in the Mountain West Conference. In 2003 the Aztecs had the biggest defensive improvement in the country, moving from 95th in total defense in 2002 to eighth in 2003, from 91st in pass defense to fourth, and from 92nd in scoring defense to 13th. Five San Diego State players were drafted from 2004-06 including Jaguars linebacker Kirk Morrison, a two-time MWC Defensive Player of the Year.

Kaumeyer spent two seasons on the Atlanta Falcons staff (2000-01) as defensive quality control coach. He assisted in all facets of the defensive game plan and also served as assistant secondary coach. Kaumeyer had two stints at Palomar College where he began his coaching career as an assistant coach in 1991 before being promoted to head coach in 1994. He returned in 1997 and spent two seasons as defensive coordinator and special teams coach. From 1995-96 he served as head coach and oversaw football operations for Onward Kashiyama, Ltd. in Tokyo, Japan. The club advanced to the Tokyo Super Bowl in 1996.

A native of San Diego, Kaumeyer played safety at Palomar College (1985-86) before transferring to Oregon where he played under former NFL head coach Rich Brooks for two seasons (1987-88). At Oregon he earned all-Pac 10 honors as a senior, leading the team with 101 tackles. He was selected in the sixth round of the 1989 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams and played four seasons (1989-92) with Seattle and the New York Giants.

Kaumeyer earned a bachelor’s degree in American studies from Regents University and later obtained a master’s degree in education at Azusa Pacific. He is married to the former Kayoko Yoshioka.

    Tommui, Bugaz…Re: Gout meds

what a timely post. The new year brought about an end to HMA medical coverage for folks like me….leaving us to switch back to HMSA. I find out tonite that HMSA does NOT cover my gout med Colcys. Colcecene is no longer made…and the new med Colcys is not cheap. $164 for like 20 pills. I wondered….How can HMSA NOT cover these pills? I’m sure I’m not the only BIG (bradduh in gout) facing this dilemma.

Anybody going to Thailand or Mexico soon? I might need a refill.

  315. mikesmith January 10, 2012 8:00 pm

ST, I remember asking about Thom K. a while ago, I think he will do a good job. Heard many good things about him as a person and a coach. He used to recruit Hawaii a lot when he was at San Diego state.

  316. Bugaz January 10, 2012 8:04 pm

    6’9″ outside hitter is awesome!

  317. Danny Mlodzianowski January 10, 2012 8:06 pm

  319. mikesmith January 10, 2012 8:10 pm

Just went to the hawaiiathletics.com and boom, there it is, the announcement of Coach Chow’s new hires. they must have listened to this blog when I went on a rant about how unprofessional the UHAD and their late website is. I think Norm hired a webmaster too. So he could get is own content up faster.

  320. Slugger January 10, 2012 8:18 pm

WooHoo! Welcome, welcome, welcome! Welcome to the new coaches!

Thanks, Coach Chow, for getting most of the coaches on board at the beginning of the semester and retaining Coach Tuioti.

  321. whitey January 10, 2012 8:18 pm

everyday, uh athletics seem to be having good news and all sports look like they are on track to have a successful season. baseball and softball is just around the corner and it will be interesting to see how both perform this year.

  322. mikesmith January 10, 2012 8:21 pm

Whitey, remember it is all good now, Da Warriors are undefeated in football right now.

  323. Will-I-Am January 10, 2012 8:29 pm

WOW, I didn’t get to check the site all day and I feel like I am waaaay behind. That is a lot of action!

ST, Thanks for keeping us in the loop.

  324. whitey January 10, 2012 8:31 pm

ms, true, very true. i neva thought we had a chance with pennel cause i thought he committed to an sec school, but i am wrong in my thinking. this is a monster and would be another golden recruit.

  325. whitey January 10, 2012 8:32 pm

i guess having coach tony tuioti is reaping benefits.

  326. whitey January 10, 2012 8:34 pm

imagine if we got j poutasi what our o line would look like. wow!!!

  327. Bugaz January 10, 2012 8:35 pm

Hoping for a couple of big time DT. Pennel could be one hopefully fingers crossed and maybe Lavaka?

  328. Bugaz January 10, 2012 8:39 pm

Poutasi would have been great But he chose Utah and that gave us Sai. I confident in da boys we get and bringing in.

  329. Kevin January 10, 2012 8:41 pm

    Yes,

Mahalo for everything you do for UH athletics and UH Warrior Football “mikesmith”.

What the hell would Coach Chow do without your posts on this blog?

  330. blahblah January 10, 2012 8:43 pm

Stump is back home in East Texas, not sure where he’s gonna attend, probably one of the smaller Texas schools

  331. madeinhawaii January 10, 2012 8:56 pm

    Bugaz,

Have you ever looked into EDTA treatment for your gout?

  333. whitey January 10, 2012 8:59 pm

heck.. thanks for the news alla youz!

  335. whitey January 10, 2012 9:02 pm

don’t know what kind of injection they use for gout, but my dad’s first attack hurt big time, so i took him to emergency and they gave him a shot. within 30 nimutes, the pain subsided and he could walk without pain. he never had gout again.

  336. whitey January 10, 2012 9:04 pm

bhf2, maybe coqui soup might alleviate the pain associated with gout. what you think???

  337. kev-1 January 10, 2012 9:04 pm

Too bad this Graham kid can’t get an exemption and play right away. Not saying he would be the automatic starter, but at least we could se him compete with the boys already here.

  338. kev-1 January 10, 2012 9:06 pm

Kevin . . . thanks for posting the info on Kaumeyer. I wasn’t too thrilled about him, but after reading what you posted from the Jags site, I am intrigued to go read more about him.

  343. Curt January 10, 2012 9:14 pm

Welcome to all of our new coaches. NC is almost fully armed and ready to go. Great. It’s time to find some Warriors.

  344. jm2375 January 10, 2012 9:17 pm

Welcome to the new coaches, Taylor Graham & Stephen Maar.

Coach Wade is upgrading the vertical!

BIK – I used to work for HMSA. I might be able to explain it a little better. Send me an email (joanne2375 at gmail….) with a few details, like which plan you’re on.

  345. Curt January 10, 2012 9:20 pm

feel for steve hunt in his final senior year, in one of major rebuilding, the loss of three starters and a fourth down with a bum knee will take time to rebuild and regroup.

i imagine a lot of shuffling about until the starting lineup is set. hopefully shane welch will recover in time.

#310 and #312 BigislandKurt and Bugaz

Colcrys is a fancy and more expensive name for colchicine.

If you are in the military, you can still get colchicine. I suspect that the pharmas are pushing colcrys but somewhere along the line, you could get the generic colchicine.

  349. al January 10, 2012 9:24 pm

i get a feeling that averill will be a starter by mid season.

  350. al January 10, 2012 9:27 pm

well curt…almost all of your queries have been answered now.

just one more coach to go…special teams coordinator at that. somehow, this has been kept under wraps. i believe he is still gainfully employed and may not want to disclose his head hunting until he has a signed contract.

can’t really blame him. look what happened to the golden boy, june jones.

  351. jm2375 January 10, 2012 9:28 pm

Best wishes to the UH cheer squad as they head to Nationals.

(Guess no cheerleaders at the vb games this weekend. It’s just not the same)

  352. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 10, 2012 9:30 pm

I almost feel sorry for the work schedule of the incoming assistants…almost. 😛

I guess when Chow said he is “Demanding…” he really meant it. Yowzers.

    ###

imnsho this is the most significant attribute that Coach Chow brings to the table. Its what really separated him from the “hire from within” option. He’s been there and done that, so to say – and he’s known so when he’s asking or telling as needed he’s gonna get the attention he needs.

  354. whitey January 10, 2012 9:44 pm

    cheers for the cheer squad.

I take allopurinal for gout. Started with 100 mg per day and still had the gout and now take 300 mg per day and can eat anything and not get the gout. If I get it, its so mild that it doesn’t bother me. Back to lurking.

  361. TYaiea January 10, 2012 10:07 pm

re gout. used to get attack every so often for several years and colchicine works but gives you the runs. then about year ago started taking one colchicine a day and never had an attack since. but recently, when i refilled my prescription, the the pharmacists sent me a letter that that they’re not going to refill it without my drs approval. some kind of new regulation i think. well the dr approved 30 pills and one reorder (used to get 190 pills on an order.) they said to take the pill only if i get an attack. but i’m still taking a pill a day. also if you run out of colchicine and get an attack, try sodium naproxin, it’s the generic aleve and can get it at costco real cheap. sodium naproxin is also a nsaid and works for aches a pain for back.

  362. Chris Hart January 10, 2012 10:09 pm

Al – DARN – I was so proud of myself for thinking I had it first! (back to the drawing board…)

  363. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 10, 2012 10:10 pm

    Chris Hart,

Please make your case for the cheese sandwich on the blog.

  364. Chris Hart January 10, 2012 10:11 pm

I texted Bobby Curran and told him that ESPN Management will require him to say “Chowabunga!” everytime UH scores! (Or how about whenever/

if we can get a kickoff into the end zone!)

  365. TYaiea January 10, 2012 10:13 pm

yeah that allopurinol don’t work. used to take a pill a day but still get gout attack. was taking the 100 mg. gave it up and went to colchicine a day.

  366. mikesmith January 10, 2012 10:14 pm

334 Kevin, just a heads up, if you cannot sense the humor and sarcasm in my post, you are an idiot. If I can’t sense the sarcasm in your post then I am an idiot. Either way we are both idiots and no one cares about any of the crap that we all post in here, we don’t coach, we don’t play we have nothing to do with UH football, we just watch. Check that, I bought season tickets so at least I invest in the program.

  367. Chris Hart January 10, 2012 10:14 pm

#368 – It’s not a cheese sandwich. It’s a pile of ham, thick sliced bacon, gobs of cheddar and a tomato to make it healthy – at Giovanni Pastrami. (but perhaps not a good topic to discuss with all this gout talk)

  368. Chris Hart January 10, 2012 10:16 pm

Maybe it would sell better if it was called the CHOWABUNGA!

6-4 guard to enroll at Hawaii

    By Brian McInnis

    POSTED: 01:30 a.m. HST, Jan 10, 2012

Orel Lev couldn’t wait to come back to Hawaii.

The 6-foot-4 shooting guard from Tel Aviv, Israel, took an official visit to the Manoa campus in early November and accepted a scholarship offer to play basketball at UH about a week later. He made good on that commitment by returning on Monday to enroll for the spring semester.

  390. Curt January 10, 2012 11:06 pm

Orel Lev said he took 40 hours to travel from Israel to Hawaii. I remember taking almost 48 hours to travel from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. So, when friends complain about the 5+ hours to the mainland, I tell them that it’s not so bad.

  391. Curt January 10, 2012 11:08 pm

One thing about the Sun God, it sure appeared he could recruit.

  392. madeinhawaii January 10, 2012 11:09 pm

    From Footballscoop.com …

Looks like Boise loses another assistant coach…

Washington State: We have learned that Boise State special teams coordinator / nickels coach Jeff Choate has accepted a position on Mike Leach’s staff.

  393. Curt January 10, 2012 11:10 pm

Well, it’s been an eventful day today. Hopefully, more good news after the visits this weekend.

  394. jm2375 January 10, 2012 11:10 pm

    I’m losing my touch.

  397. HawaiiMongoose January 10, 2012 11:13 pm

Boise is losing most of its starters to graduation. The Broncos will rebuild but it won’t happen overnight. Some of the assistant coaches are cashing in on the program’s success now, before the downturn comes.

  398. Curt January 10, 2012 11:16 pm

Poor Boise…losing 2 coaches, Kellen Moore, and others. I would think that they may be vulnerable this year. But, they always seem to reload rather than rebuild.

  399. homey ℞ January 10, 2012 11:19 pm

    Nice…nice.

  400. TYaiea January 10, 2012 11:20 pm

BIK initially my doc prescribed one a day with meal but i only took it when i felt an attack coming. after a while and several attacks, started taking it daily and it really worked. i could eat anything and never again had an attack. earlier post re endomythiacin (sp) that worked but when i went on blood thinner, coumadin and now warfarin (rat poison), the two conflicted so doc stopped the endo.

  425. krump1_AKA_protector January 11, 2012 6:29 am

I’m happy about Coach Uperesa, Coach Tony and Coach Kaumeyer sounds like a very strong hire. The other hires to me are underwhelming and for the most part, inexperienced. Rolo isn’t hired, but Tommy Lee gets people excited; really ? I know that some had said (knowing of the 400 applicants) there was an expectation of significantly experienced coaches coming, but only Lee is experienced, and at 70 was poised for retirement. When inexperienced coaches seemed to be the trend, ai-eee-soos had to “spin-doctor” it to say Coach Chow wants young coaches with a lot of energy (Lee?). What the heck is Rolo; an old coach with a lack of energy ?

  426. whitey January 11, 2012 6:29 am

d1, i do not know much about how retirement is done, but i don’t think being a coach will make the qualification.

  427. whitey January 11, 2012 6:30 am

d1, meant to say hs coach. the ad is qualified and vested.

Wasn’t Taylor Graham granted a release from Ohio St thereby making him eligible to play in the upcoming season if he beats out the other QBs?

  429. kaimiloa January 11, 2012 6:38 am

428… Public school coaching positions are temporary contracts and don’t qualify. It probably pays about $2000 for a non-DOE employee.

  430. kaimiloa January 11, 2012 6:38 am

428… Public school coaching positions are temporary contracts and don’t qualify. It probably pays about $2000 for a non-DOE employee.

  431. kaimiloa January 11, 2012 6:41 am

A head coach, who is a DOE employee makes $4800 (last time I checked).

  432. BigHiloFan2 January 11, 2012 6:41 am

    Krump

watched Lombardi on HBO earlier. First he was a NYGiants as a Asst, then went to GBay as Head Coach. stayed there 9 years, and “retired.” Then unretired and went to Redskins.

main thing, he was THE man at GBay. ran everything.

Coach Chow reminds me of that kind of mindset. us, we only support Coach. nuff said.

  433. BigHiloFan2 January 11, 2012 6:43 am

well, gots to go. will be back later this pm

    hi ho hi ho.

    Go Coach. Go Warriors!

  434. whitey January 11, 2012 6:49 am

kaimiloa, the hs hc is on contract, but does not have any fringe or retirement benefits. most hs hc are teachers which has the benefits and the coaching pay is a bonus. i could be wrong on this, but basically this is how it was done before i retired.

  435. whitey January 11, 2012 6:51 am

krump, i hear you, but the point on coach rolovich is moot. if coach chow wants him, he will hire him. coach chow like coach lee, so he is hired. simple, but that is the way all sports do business, unless you own the team.

  436. whitey January 11, 2012 6:53 am

kaimiloa, sorry neva read all your post.

  437. kaimiloa January 11, 2012 6:53 am

You’re right, Whitey. All hs (public) coaches are on temp contract with no fringe benefits. DOE employees get paid at a higher rate than non-DOE employees for the same positions.

  438. Da Punchbowl Kid January 11, 2012 6:54 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Today’s the big day! The future is now! Time for Chow!

  439. whitey January 11, 2012 7:01 am

dpk, kaimiloa, krump, have a good day and each passing day brings more excitement for the da warriors. we can sit back and enjoy the ride. like d1 says, ho hi, ho hi to breakfast of champions.

  440. Da Punchbowl Kid January 11, 2012 7:12 am

And you have a great day, whitey-san! Enjoy your breakfast.

  441. VonAppen January 11, 2012 7:15 am

Butigroove is the only company that’s been given permission by Norm Chow’s family to readily use his name or likeness on products.

“We have been overwhelmed by the support shown by the community after Coach Chow’s hiring was announced and the excitement it has created around UH football. BJ Sabate and his team at Butigroove have helped to maintain a lot of that excitement with their creative t-shirt designs,” said Carter Chow, Norm Chow’s son.

  443. al January 11, 2012 7:25 am

gonzo…osu granted graham his release from his scholarship with them which allows him to accept a scholarship with hawaii. he still, however, must sit out the mandatory year before being eligilble to play in any games. he can practice and participte in spring training.

therefore, 2013 is when he can get on the field all 6’4″+ 230 lbs of him.

  444. GeorgiaWarrior January 11, 2012 8:05 am
