Ailing receiver withdraws from UH

Wideout/kick returner Jovonte Taylor has withdrawn from UH after suffering serious symptoms from a viral infection. Taylor lost more than 20 pounds. He has withdrawn from his UH classes, and returned to his home in Los Angeles. He is expected to return in January. Taylor, a junior, already has used a redshirt season. He might seek a special exemption to make up for missing most of this season.

Keith AhSoon is one medical clearance away from returning to the Warriors. He is hopeful of being able to play Saturday against Nevada. If he is cleared, he would compete at left tackle.

Defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea is scheduled to undergo surgery Saturday to repair his partially torn left triceps. He hopes to be ready for the start of spring training in April.

Happy birthday to Rocky and Solomon Elimimian:

The UH coaches went into overtime last night, working until 9:30 to prepare for today’s one-hour practice.
There are some changes planned, but not in the way that many fans imagine nor only in what head coach Greg McMackin hinted during yesterday’s news conference.
McMackin isn’t adverse to making innovative changes — remember when he revamped the defensive scheme for the 1999 O‘ahu Bowl against Oregon State? — and he has a lot of chips he has not used this season.

You have to like Brent Rausch’s positive attitude.
Despite being held out of essentially two games because of a clerical error that the NCAA did not recognize in time, Rausch refused to be bitter.
He watched the game on television with teammates who also did not make the trip to Boise.
“It was kind of cool to see it from the other side,” Rausch said. “I followed the boys. I got excited for them. It was cool.”
As for his status, he said, “I’m coming along, getting bigger, getting stronger. I have to wait my turn.”
Rausch is not going to pursue another, uh, rules interpretation he might have with the NCAA. He worked his first year out of high school and did not play football, although the NCAA ruled that his eligibility clock started. He only played one year of JC before transferring to UH in May. Even with my limited math ability, that still figures to mean he should have four years to play three UH seasons instead of three to play three.
Rausch thinks so, but won’t appeal further.

Don’t forget we’re giving away tickets to Saturday’s football game against Nevada. There will be separate contests tomorrow and Friday. Also, The Twins are in possession of the jersey moi won at yesterday’s Na Koa luncheon. They will figure out a contest to give away the very collectible jersey — it was that white one with the silver numbers.

    Maverick,

I would love that Hawaii Bowl matchup because UH would be able to beat Stanford at Aloha Stadium, in my opinion…and I am a Stanford alum.

  26. Garret October 21, 2008 7:36 am

I’m guessing that Rausch figures that he doesn’t plan on redshirting so the start of his eligibility clock doesn’t matter. Still, with how little he has played 11-man football and how if he redshirted (say, next season) he’d have 2 years to play after Inoke and Alexander graduate, it would be nice for him to get his redshirt season back.

The D will have to stop this RB, as Nevada will use him and others to try to dominate with their running game. That plays into a strength of UH’s D, so this will be an interesting matchup! La Tech moved the ball on the ground okay even though their QB couldn’t throw, so this will be a harder test for the D.

Cabrillo High School graduate Vai Taua had another fine game for the University of Nevada last Saturday in the Wolfpack’s 44-17 Western Athletic Conference victory over Utah State.

The sophomore ran for 122 yards on 17 carries and scored on a 26-yard run in the first quarter as Nevada improved to 2-1 in the WAC and 4-3 overall.

For the season Taua has carried the ball 115 times for 736 yards, an average of 6.4 yards per carry. The total yardage ranks him 18th in the NCAA Football Subdivision and his 105.1 average per game leads the WAC.

The Utah State game was the fourth time this season that Taua has rushed for over 100 yards. His 9.4 points per game ties him for the lead on the team in scoring per game with the Wolfpack quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

  29. Garret October 21, 2008 7:41 am

I’m glad that Beck got the ball for Bess so that he can always remember his first NFL TD!

Rookie WR Davone Bess scored his first NFL touchdown, but he forgot to retrieve the ball. Backup QB John Beck, though, was thoughtful enough to get it from an official.

  30. Garret October 21, 2008 7:42 am

Bess talked about how the Dolphins.

“We’re always going to be the underdog pretty much in every matchup we play this year,” Miami receiver Davone Bess said. “We just need to focus on what we’re doing, and that will at least give us a shot.”

Someone posted the YouTube clip of the ref to stopped South Carolina’s QB in their game against LSU. I think Kekoa asked if the ref would be punished–the answer is no.

Wilbur Hackett Jr. had his share of big tackles of SEC quarterbacks in his day, but none generated the buzz of Hackett’s hit on South Carolina’s Stephen Garcia.

Hackett was the umpire who collided with Garcia at LSU’s 5-yard line Saturday in the second quarter of the Tigers’ 24-17 win. Garcia was scrambling to his left when he cut back and ran into Hackett, who slowed Garcia before Tigers safety Curtis Jackson finished the tackle.

Being in the middle of a play is nothing new for Hackett, who was a Parade All-American at his Louisville, Ky., high school and a three-year starter at linebacker for Kentucky from 1968-70.

Many TV analysts and sports-talk radio hosts said it looked like Hackett’s hit was intentional.

But the SEC office believes Hackett was protecting himself and plans to take no disciplinary action on the veteran official. Rogers Redding, the conference’s coordinator of football officials, reviewed the tape of the play and thought it was inadvertent contact.

Glad Brent Rausch stays positive but if it was me, I’d still be a little pissed inside knowing I went from 1st to 3rd/4th QB in such short time without really getting any game reps. Regardless, if this years QB controversy has been mind boggling, just wait until next year…

Lets see we will have Funaki, Alexander…Seniors, Rausch…Junior, Jantz, Nielsen, and Austin…Freshman…hmm…wonder how that’s going to play out. Plus Kiran and Bryce are still around too right?

Some of my good friends have said that he is a true baller and will be one of those mentioned along the lines of Trevor Ruffin, Tes Whitlock, Anthony Carter, Justice Sueing, etc… Hope he is as good as advertised and can put UH Basketball back in the NCAA tournament.

Jack Flash – i have parked at LCC the previous two seasons and then caught the bus to No-Aloha Stadium. I have no complaints. Lots of parking and security patrols the parking lot. You’d be surprised how many people use this service. Children under 12 were free.

  48. Uce5 October 21, 2008 9:41 am

Kind of too late now to do to the O Line what needs to be done. For next year, the coaches should run the O Line hard. Two miles a day to begin with, every day except Sunday. Three miles a day everyday during regular season, followed by sprints. Five sprints across the entire field, every day, before and after practice. We need guys who can go full speed for six quarters. If our guys can do this during practices, then they can and will go full speed for four quarters with relative ease, without slumping over, hands on hips, gasping for breath.

We have big guys. All we need to do is to get them into better shape than their competitors. We have been too soft on these guys, as well as the rest of the team with regards to conditioning. UH needs to institute a program involving more running. Weight room training appears to be sufficient. We just need the entire team to do more road work. The lack of road work, for the entire team, is apparent. Our guys keep running out of gas early, there is no explosive burst after the initial contact, and guys fall down after the first touch.

In football if you are more fit than your opponent, nine out of 10 times you will beat your opponent.

Our O Line and Receivers are just not fit to the point where they are regularly and routinely beating their opponents, one on one and as a team. More important than personnel changes at this point, UH needs to understand that the fundamental flaw in its approach is in conditioning. All that off season running does pay off.

  49. Stretch October 21, 2008 9:44 am

    Speaking of security patrols.

Sometime during the San Jose game, someone “borrowed” my grill and charcoal. I hope that it get’s returned to my parking spot this Saturday so we can cook some food. Maybe I should buy another just in case it doesn’t come back??

My friend mentioned to me there was an article about how that San Jose game had a lot of “borrowing” taking place. Grills, chairs and coolers.

Whoever took all these items would have had to use a truck to load up. Wouldn’t it look funny to see a truck driving around stopping every so often loading up stuff?? Where is security??

usually go to the spiral in the south end zone, get 4 tv’s to the different games. last home game was awesome, had game 2 of boston/tb, mizzou/okst, lsu/fla
    .

  77. Kazz October 21, 2008 10:48 am

When I turned on my radio it was on AM1500 but they were on commercial, I usually leave it on, but for some reason I wanted to tune to Bobby Curran’s show to check out all the naysayers and all the couch potato coaches calling in to give their “wealth” of knowledge to Coach Mack on how to win 🙄 .

Sure enough I caught the butt-end of some caller questioning Rolo at QB coach amongst other things.

Now, whether by design or instruction or just pure “homerism”, Bobby Curran went to bat for the UH coaches today and cut this guy off. Now, it did seem like the guy “won” the “argument” because BC hung him on him, but the fact remains that ANYONE with ANY kind of coaching experience in ANY sport knows better than to listen to the criticism of outsiders looking in, including the fans, ESPECIALLY when it comes to matters on the field.

The last time a coach attempted to take advice from the fans was… umm… vonAppen.

In 1999… JJ was a god.
In 2000… people said this was not the right offense for UH and JJ should have been fired.
    In 01, 02, 03, 04 … silence…
In 2005… we went 5-7 and the villagers went to Manoa with their pitch forks and torches looking for JJ’s head.
In 2006… the seeds of a magical season were being starting to sprout… JJ is awesome and so is Colt.
In 2007… JJ… “will you marry me”?
In 2008… we loose JJ, the entire offense of 05, 06, and 07, we loose to #5 Florida were 12+ guys can run a 4.3 40, we loose to OSU that beat USC, and now we are back to trying to find out pitchforks and torches.

C’mon people of Hawaii!!! (Excluding TSAIKOS) Get your act together!!! Freakin’ morons!

People can whine all they want, their attitude change starts with the fan in the mirror!

  79. Jack Flash October 21, 2008 10:55 am

da princess’ classmate- The zone tents are in the upper Halawa lot, grass areas. You can see the tents from the freeway ramps. Its free to go in if you catch a shuttle from an alt parking site, or else its $5. I forgot about the S. endzone setups! That might work too. hmmm…

Anyone going to call the coach tonight?? Is there a call the coach tonight???

    Okay…gotta hele…be back later.

    I just got one question..

    “Babooze… babooshka… babalooo….”

    What’s the difference?

  84. Da Punchbowl Kid October 21, 2008 11:34 am

    Stretch,

You should send a picture of your stolen grill to Robert Kekaula. Isn’t he our go to guy for these things?

It really sucks that you can’t enjoy a tailgate and not have to worry about these kind of things happening. Some people, I tell you…

Bozo Boyz are not feeling the love in upper Kalihi valley right now. So Stretch, you better include them with the Babooze family in future references to Baboozka-like scenarios.

  93. da princess' classmate October 21, 2008 12:32 pm

well looks like royce p to get some pt this weekend. should be good for him and for ML. still no can understand how we are a dog to a reno team that has traditionally not played well here. more often than not, they don’t play well anywhere other than in reno. and just 2 games ago, they gave up 48 at home to a NMSU team that also usually doesn’t play well on the road. last in the nation in pass d, and from the sounds of it, we’re gearing up our passing o for this week’s game. i guess i must be just being a homer…

  94. Garret October 21, 2008 12:36 pm

Ken Niumatalolo (current Navy head coach and former UH QB) mentioned how some Hawaii fans turn on the starting QB when he struggles. I think that Inoke can relate to this…

Meanwhile, the media talked to both Niumatalolo and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Ivin Jasper on Monday about Ricky Dobbs. Both men were backup quarterbacks during their playing careers at the University of Hawaii and know the mentality that fans unhappy with the performance of the starter always want to see a change.

“The backup quarterback is always the prettiest girl at the dance. I went in, and then they wanted the other guy,” Niumatalolo joked about fans at Hawaii. “Nobody cares who the second team guard or the second team linebacker is, but everybody wants the second team quarterback to go in.”

  100. Jason October 21, 2008 12:50 pm

My prayers to Jovonte for a speedy and complete recovery. All this time, I thought it was just the knee that was keeping him out.

But it would be nice to have AhSoon back. He (him?) and Letuli on the left side … 🙂

  101. Long Time UH Fan October 21, 2008 12:50 pm

Good luck to Rocky on his surgery and best wishes for a full recovery..

  102. da princess' classmate October 21, 2008 12:51 pm

get well jtaylor, hope you get better, worry about football later, take care yourself first and when the time comes, i hope the ncaa allows you a medical redshirt.

that’s strange, why would ahsoon compete at left tackle and not at left guard, where’s he more suited. oh well, if that’s what the coaches want then that must be the right move. hope he’s ready.

  103. Long Time UH Fan October 21, 2008 12:52 pm

Happy Birthday to Sol and Rocky…and many more to come!

  104. Garret October 21, 2008 12:53 pm

  107. Garret October 21, 2008 12:56 pm

I hope that Ah Soon is cleared by tomorrow, or it could be hard for him to be able to play vs. Nevada. I was expecting that he’d go back to guard, since he was playing there earlier…but he’s experienced at LT also.

  108. Garret October 21, 2008 12:56 pm

    Happy Birthday Rocky and Sol!

  109. Jason October 21, 2008 12:56 pm

DPC: At this point, AhSoon at left tackle and Letuli at left guard might be better than AhSoon at left guard and Letuli/Kia at left tackle.

  110. Kazz October 21, 2008 12:57 pm

    DPC,

Maybe ST meant to say LG and not LT.

  111. Garret October 21, 2008 12:58 pm

It is too bad that Rocky will miss the rest of the season, but the earlier reports had pointed to that. He would definitely have helped out vs. Nevada because they will try to run the ball a ton and UH will need to rotate DTs.

    Ronnie:

I can pick up and deliver the tickets to Curveball as long as everyone is on O`ahu. You can e-mail me the contact information swood at hokudotcom if you need my help.

    LizK:

Please let me know by Thursday morning if you do not have a place for your son to stay – see above for e-mail info. I’ll need real names and your contact information to pass along.

Really good friends of ours have a spare bedroom and assorted kids in high school. I can see if they can put him up. They live in upper Kalihi Valley which we drive by to and from Windward O`ahu.

Question to anyone: I am not an early morning radio person under any circumstances so the comments about the two sports shows pretty much fly past my eyeballs – except for the ones about Jeff Portnoy. I’ve known him for years and years – in things theatrical, political, and athletical – especially when he headed the basketball boosters club when Stan Sheriff was still with us. What about Jeff irks people around here? Last time I talked basketball with him towards the end of the 2007/2008 NBA regular season, as usual he seemed to be quite knowledgeable about the sport.

  115. Garret October 21, 2008 1:01 pm

Maybe AhSoon’s return to the OL was one of the things Mac referred to when he said that they would be shaking this up on the OL for the Nevada game.

I’m more interested in seeing Keala’s face, after what Coach Aranda said happened. (And glad to see there were no complications from his bloodied face, considering his medical condition.)

Get well Jovonte! May God heal whatever inflection has overcome you. Keep the faith.

Kudos to Rocky, Kealoha, Ryan, Blaze, The Bear, Tyler. Keala, Brashton and any other injured Warrior.

we were the reason for the largest attendance at Boise???? what? so sad.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronco_Stadium
Bronco Stadium’s current attendance record is 32,342, achieved on October 17, 2008, against Hawai’i.
you would’ve thought they would increase the capacity of their stadium instead of building the luxury boxes.
what’s sad is that they don’t even sell out the place all the time.

  161. ℌℴℳℰℽ October 21, 2008 2:52 pm

    he>i

  162. Garret October 21, 2008 2:52 pm

    chawan_cut,

Luxury boxes make a LOT more money than regular seats…from a revenue perspective, a luxury box is probably worth hundreds of regular seats. Plus, those sell out well in advance normally so that is money in the bank no matter how the team does.

  163. ℌℴℳℰℽ October 21, 2008 2:53 pm

chawan – but those luxury boxes will make them a lot of $$$.

  164. Rob25 October 21, 2008 2:53 pm

OK I feel better because if that’s their record then we can beat them even on a down year.

ℌℴℳℰℽ: You could impress Brook Burke with your chopsticks skills. Show her how to pick up raw oysters at the speed of light!

  165. Garret October 21, 2008 2:54 pm

Analysis that tries to figure out how the conferences rate. The bottom part of the WAC really hurts the WAC’s power rating. I agree with the SEC and Big 12 being at the top, but I was surprised at how the Pac-10 wasn’t much above the MWC…I’m guessing that Washington and Washington State are really bringing the conference score down.

Two of the factors used by the BCS are listed with the BCS standings. The third is harder to pin down because it is vaguely described. Some measure of the top to bottom strength of the conferences using the BCS computers is used to judge them.

Each BCS computer generates a conference standing, though one uses a different set of data to do so. Each presents their data as a raw data score and do not directly relate to each other in any meaningful way. By finding the mean and standard deviation for each computer a z-score can be obtained for each conference relative to that computer.

The average of these 6 z-scores is presented here:

    SEC: 1.138
    Big 12: 1.127
    ACC: 0.804
    Big 10: 0.776

    Big East: 0.328
    PAC 10: 0.277
    MWC: 0.122

    WAC: -0.605

    MAC: -1.127
    C-USA: -1.235
    Sun Belt: -1.605

At the end of last year similar results were obtained but the WAC was in the lower group and the MWC was in the gap, close to 0. The PAC 10 and C-USA down significantly from previous years. The Big 12, ACC and MWC are up from their typical position.

    chawan_cut,

I looks like every one of those luxury seats that BSU added to the stadium is sold out, and they bring in big money!

Boise State has lease agreements ranging from three to 15 years for every seat so far in the new facility, according to the athletic department.

The athletic department has sold 35 suites (16 seats each), 44 loge boxes (four seats each) and 636 club seats, at a minimum of $2,200 per seat.

By comparison, Oregon State opened a similar facility in 2005 with all 22 suites and 58 loge boxes sold out, but has never sold about one-third of its 3,300 club seats. The prices are comparable to those at Boise State.

“That’s incredible,” Oregon State assistant athletic director for development Linda Hurd said of Boise State’s seat sales. ” I was by Bronco Stadium in January. It looks like it’s going to be awesome when it’s done.”

Boise State has virtually assured the Sky Club will be a short-term success with multi-year leases. All of the $3.285 million in budgeted annual revenue is guaranteed for three years and 63 percent is guaranteed for at least five years.

Thirty-one percent is committed for at least 10 years.

  190. homey ⅖ October 21, 2008 3:23 pm

Yep, chemistry cause it’s damn difficult for one person to lead a team to the NCAA tournament. UH may have that 1 player but other teams have 8 of them. Just gotta gel, get in rhythm, hit the open man, drain the open shot, box out, play tough “D”, win the ball, out hustle the other 5, and things will fall into place.

GO BOWS! Let’s go BOWS, Let’s go BOWS!

    Sorry for the Bball tangent…

  191. Garret October 21, 2008 3:23 pm

I’m not sure what the face value of a BSU ticket is, but let us compare what they would get by adding luxury boxes vs. what they would get by adding an upper level of their stadium to increase attendance. If an upper-deck seat cost $22, then the cheapest seat in their new section is worth 100 times that! And I would assume that the luxury suits and the seats closer to the 50-yard-line would cost much, much more than that!

  192. d1島 October 21, 2008 3:26 pm

Garret can calculate the revenue/budget for luxury boxes at Aloha Stadium.

Garett can figure out how to build it.

Da baboozes can figure out where to sit wen they pau.

kekoa – Never to late to cheer on any team.

GO WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD TEAM!

  199. Garret October 21, 2008 3:36 pm

For comparison purposes, the luxury boxes the Texas Longhorns have 2 price levels (depending on location), and cost around $100k and $85k per season…NOT counting the crazy prices they charge per person in the luxury box. The $100k just gets you the right to buy crazily priced tickets in that luxury box. Texas has at least 111 (I don’t know if they added any in the construction that completed before this season), and when you add it all up the luxury boxes may bring in more money to Texas than UH’s entire athletic budget.

I think that it is shameful that Mack Brown and DeLoss Dodds (the AD) broke their contract to play at Aloha Stadium. That was such a wussy thing to do and I let the Texas fundraiser who called me later that year hear about it, plus I never donated again to their athletic program.

But for those like A-House who bring up how they should come to Aloha Stadium, Texas makes something like $4 million per home game, maybe more when TV is factored in. If they play a WAC team, ESPN will cover it and Texas gets nothing. As a public institution, they want as many home games as possible and can’t just give up $4 mil to satisfy UH fans.

The SEC is going to be even worse after their new CBS contract kicks in. If you remember that article, a school like Florida or Georgia will lose something like $5 mil for every out-of-conference road game…and CBS will actually kick in money for them to offer teams to play them at home without a return trip to the other school. Public Universities will find it very, very hard to justify flying to Hawaii to play a game, where the travel costs will basically eat up the stipend UH gives, when they can pay some local Sun Belt or C-USA school $1 mil and pocket the other $4 mil.

The Pac-10 does NOT have a new lucrative TV deal, and they have much cheaper travel costs to Hawaii, so I hope that JD is able to schedule as many Pac-10 teams as possible!

    Chawan,

The funniest thing about Forrest Gump was not even in the movie itself, but the reaction of a guy sitting behind me in the theater. I will always remember this.

It was during the scene where Forrest visits Jenny and sees her son whos name is “Forrest”. He asks, his name is Forrest too? She says she named him after his daddy, then Gump replies, “He has a daddy named ‘Forrest’ too”… THEN after saying this, the theater starts laughing, but the guy behind me says, with the deepest tone of disgust, “what a f**king idiot”. 😆

I dunno, I thought it was pretty funny.

    First of all, who says they’d return me and who says I was “lost” as opposed to “seized”…. :shock;

Second, “bend but don’t break”… While Nevada may get 200+ yards rushing, I expect them to result in nothing but fumbles and at the most a field goal here and there.

Their passing defense has been suspect according to the stats, but while things haven’t gone so well for us lately in that field, it is also the prime time for our passing game to pick up against what seems like a weak secondary for Nevada.

It seems like what the doctor just ordered for a case of the passing blues.

We are 3-4 on the season and 2-2 in the WAC. The 2008 WAC Championship is out of reach barring a unique situation…. We need at least four wins to get the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.

Jack in the Box needs to go to that Arby’s 5 items for $5.99 deal. Ultimate cheeseburger with bacon, stuffed jalapenos, monster taco, cheese&bacon fries and a giant drink. I’d buy that.

I hope you’re right about our passing game. This could indeed be what Funaki needs to regain his swagger. Salas has been looking good when he gets his looks. It’ll be scary without Pilares, who’s been the most potent offensive force this season, but Libre should be up for more work.

Arbys is kinda out of my way from where I work to where I live but I love their Market Fresh Sandwiches. Their turkey and bacon is awesome. 8.00 but awesome!

But as far as our passing attack is concerned I am already expecting to see different receivers not all but some and as Coach Mack said, a different QB in passing situations. Based on this and Nevada’s statistically weak passing defense, we could all be pleasantly surprised.

So…. um… anyword on that Bolla fella there at Manoa? I saw ALOT of new and “tall” faces on the Wahine’s roster this season, seems interesting.

I wonder how the blog got into talking movies and Forrest Gump upstream…..

For some reason I’ve got a bad feeling about this game (against Nevada). I don’t know why, but it was sort of the same eery feeling I had in the days leading up to the Oregon State game.

Hopefully the boys can prove me wrong on Saturday and put us back at .500 heading into the lightest part of the schedule.

No bad feelings sir! Pulehu balot will do that to you!

But Nevada is no OSU and we are at the Rust Palace and our team has improved in a lot of areas since the Weber State (prior to OSU) game. While our offense has been up and down I don’t blame anyone for feeling a bit apprehensive as when the offense is doing well, the “foot” on the “gas pedal” does seem to ease up in the second half.

Again, things are better since the OSU game.

  264. Mike October 21, 2008 6:00 pm

    Kazz,

It’s all preseason sweetness and smiles in practice so far. Keep an eye out for Rebecca Dew, a 6-3 center who can really get up and down the court and has a nice touch around the basket. She looks like a future all-WACer, and she’s being groomed as a starter for the New Zealand national team. Arbuckle is also going to be very good. UH hasn’t had a polished, athletic scorer like her in a long time. Now if they can just do something about those turnovers…

  269. d1島: October 21, 2008 6:33 pm

Gotta be careful about reading stats on the WolfPups.

Overall, they are giving up a ton thru the air with an overall opponent pass efficiency of 136.39. A chunk of that came @ Mizzou. 27 of 36 for 519 and 5 TD’s
But they did “hold” Texas Tech to 19 of 46 for 297 with 2 pics and 1 TD.
NaMaSu did touch ’em pretty good: 28-47 for 409 yds; 1 int, 3 tds

Significant to me is 0 sacks in either of those games (6 in the opener vs. Grambling) but this stat is growing as the season goes along: UNLV-2; Idaho-4; NMSU-3; Utah St.-5.
Gotta protect da QB-whoever it is…

  270. Kazz October 21, 2008 6:34 pm

    Call the Coach notes:

Coach Mack rehashes the BSU game and says that one guy he is worried about for th future is is their QB as he showed good composure under pressure.

Coach thinks Colin Kapernick is better than Jake Locker.

Coach ranks Nevada’s oline up there with UF and OSU compared to the other teams UH faced this season.

B.C. asks Coach Mack about the oline being weaker on the outside as opposed on the inside and Coach Mack is stands by Coach Smith and Gerke on working on the oline and gives credit to BSU’s DE simply out working our tackles.

Commercial break…. Coach takes calls next.

    kazz, mike,
    can’t wait for basketball season.
both men’s and wahine. yes. even the bolla led team. i guess i’ll see you guys at both.
i did see the new lineup for the wahine. got a few more aussies. hope they all work out for the best!

  286. chawan_cut October 21, 2008 7:35 pm

    10 more days!!!!

  287. Jason October 21, 2008 7:39 pm

Speaking of basketball: So yesterday, when I went to get my season tickets, I asked what the best available aisle seat was; the guy said row 10 (second row), seat 1 (on the band-side aisle). I asked if there were any seats available in row 9; he said no. Today, I checked online to see how ticket sales were going (tried to guesstimate by the best available seat). And there were choke seats available in row 9! In fact, had row 9, seat 12! Ack, I would have taken that over the seat he gave me. Blah!

  288. Kazz October 21, 2008 7:44 pm

    Chawan,

I saw a few of the new Wahines in person last Friday at the men’s practice…. BTW… anyone know when the next practices are, if they remain open to the public and if they will be at the SSC or Gym 1 or 2…. but yeah they look impressive as do our Rainbow Warriors.

I think this basketball season will be a pleasant surprise for many.

BTW… WHY THE HECK ARE WE STUCK WITH A MONDAY NIGHT 11PM GAME?!?!?!!?!?!?

    And …

WHY DID ESPN SCHEDULE THAT BASKETBALL MARATHON DURING THE WORK WEEK?!?!?!?!?!!

  289. Stretch October 21, 2008 7:44 pm

I think a while back Paipai mentioned a nagging injury, probably back from his Kahuku days, that would need surgery soon. I wanna say it’s his knee, but I’m not sure.

  293. Jason October 21, 2008 7:52 pm

Kazz: Yeah, too bad it isn’t the Monday night before Veteran’s Day or Election Day. I think the concept is cool, but I would prefer something where I don’t need to go out to school the next day.

Just putting it out there — normally I catch the bus home, but obviously it’ll be too late that night for that. Anyone heading west can give me a ride back, I’d appreciate it. Otherwise, I might not go. (Although I do want to be part of such a cool concept. Jim Donovan said on the radio once that if ESPN finds success with this thing, then they will give UH that time slot every year. The more national coverage at home, the better.) 🙂

speaking of Bolla – what ever happened to the “investigation” that UH was doing?? Do we have to put up with his ways for another season??

Since people can sit as close as they want to the action during the Wahine games, I say we should sit directly behind the bench and all make as much noise as we can cheering for the Wahine and then when Bolla turns around from time to time we all give him the SAME look he gives his team when things don’t go so well.

    It’s basically a “I don’t wanna be here” look.

    Or

Maybe we should hurl comments questioning his sexual preference and see how he likes it… oh wait… those are just allegations right? I think the investigation is still going on and depending on certain things, the details may not be “public record”.

  295. Stretch October 21, 2008 7:57 pm

11pm start time, maybe finish about 1am?? I might as well drive straight to the airport and sleep a few hours in my truck before going to Kauai. It wouldn’t be the first time.

  296. Kazz October 21, 2008 7:58 pm

    Jason,

Since that 11pm game is going to be nationally televised, I shutter to think what the attendance will look like and how it will appear on tv. I REALLY do not expect a good crowd simply because of the very late night time slot and it being a Monday night.

Hmm… sounds like “design” more than “circumstance”… then again that will be like 5am on the East coast on a Tuesday morning.

  297. d1島: October 21, 2008 8:02 pm

i can give you a ride home afterward. that is late though. 1 AM. i think i’ll be sick on that tuesday.

d1shima: I might consider sleeping over at the dorms or something, too. I have class at 9 AM; gotta set the alarm for 6 in order to leave by 7. 😛

I say after the game, students should be able to participate in a SSC sleepover. 😉

  305. Pomai October 21, 2008 8:25 pm

    Here’s the setup:

It’s the end of the second quarter, with 21 seconds left in the half. UH is on the Nevada 23 with fourth and 8, Mack sends in Kelly for the FG. Kelly is stand back at the 40 with the clock ticking, just as it reaches 3 seconds left he calmly turns, looks coach Ault in the eyes and signals for a timeout, he then just smiles and walks calmly over to the uh side chuckling under his breathe , then kicks the FG to give UH a 17 point lead, then turns once again to the Nevada sideline and pumps his fist.

  306. Jason October 21, 2008 8:28 pm

chawan_cut: That would be great, thanks. And yeah, I double-checked to see if I had any tests or anything important that Tuesday. I might want to check with my professors … 😀

  307. Garret October 21, 2008 8:31 pm

Rookie receiver Davone Bess had a memorable game Sunday when he scored his first NFL touchdown, a 7-yard catch from Pennington. But he forgot one detail — keeping the ball.

“Obviously, that’s a rookie mistake,” Bess said. “All the boys came up to me and said, ‘Man, what are you doing? You’re supposed to keep it.’ I got it, and that’s the big thing.”

Backup quarterback John Beck was thoughtful enough to retrieve the ball from the official, so Bess could start filling his trophy case.

“The way I look at it, it’s the first of many,” Bess said.

By the way, the link includes a 30-second interview of Bess about getting the ball from his first NFL TD.

  310. Garret October 21, 2008 8:33 pm

    Q&A with Bess.

(On if his first career touchdown is bitter sweet because of the loss) “Exactly. I’d trade the touchdown for a win any given day. We just didn’t execute on both sides of the ball. Baltimore came in ready to play and ready to step up to the challenge and they walked away with the victory.”

(On his touchdown catch and what happened and what he saw on it) “The play before, coach did a great job to see how they were playing. My guy bit and I ran with (Greg) Camarillo and I just looped back up around him. I was pretty much by myself and caught it.”

(On his feelings after the touchdown) “It felt real good. It’s always good to get in the end zone, especially your first NFL touchdown. Like I said, it’s kind of sour now after losing, so hopefully we can get better.”

(On what it was about the Ravens defense that stopped them) “They were relentless. They played their scheme excellent. It was hard to tell exactly what personnel they were in and what coverage they were in. They came with attitude and stepped up to the challenge.”

It’s a quiet way to get your msg to someone in a meeting. They can sneak a peek and maybe even send an answer…and no one is the wiser.

Sometimes you don’t have time for a full blown conversation, so you can send brevity coded msgs.

  342. d1島: October 22, 2008 5:54 am

    bhf2,

One of those shoulda, coulda, woulda’s…

When I returned to PDX from BOI on Sat I overheard the RAC agent next to me say, “Man. That was the craziest rental I’ve ever signed out; a $1.00 per day one-way rental to Boise!
Evidently, they were in need of more vehicles in Boise at that time. I asked how one would find out about a deal like that in advance and was told it was pretty much “luck of the draw” that this renter happened to look online at the right time.
With a deal like that, I woulda driven over myself!

    oops…gomen….

    Great Morning All!

Hope erryboddy has a great day!

  344. Garret October 22, 2008 6:42 am

    d1shima,

When Lori was trying to get us a flight to Hawaii during Thanksgiving or Christmas, all the websites (Priceline, Kayak, Orbitz, etc.) were quoting her $1300 per ticket (and that is before fees and/or taxes) for each of the 4 tickets we needed. Then, Priceline had someone on their site that said that she could save money if she would take a rental car too. With us taking the rental car, it came out to $1400 for *4* tickets with the rental car included, and after taxes and all fees it came out to $1500. That includes upgrading the rental car to a midsize for $1 per day.

So, we went from $5200+ to $1500 by agreeing to let them give us a rental car! This time I won’t have to cockaroach Mom’s car while we are in Hawaii!

  345. Garret October 22, 2008 6:44 am

    WassupDoc,

For the last 2 quarters, the number of text messages sent has exceeded the number of calls made by cell phone users. Some people, like you and Lori, don’t send any text messages, but others more than make up for that.

  346. Garret October 22, 2008 6:46 am

    d1shima,

I’ve never heard of a $1 rental car deal though…that is crazy. It does make sense that they would need extra rental cars in college towns on game weekends, so that is something to look at for future games.

Good luck to Daniel Lofton in his new role as returner! He must be excited to get a chance to really contribute in the Nevada game…just remember to hold on to the ball!

This Cal football player deserved to be kicked out of school.

A Cal football player and a former team member upset at reported racial slurs made by a member of the university’s crew team sought revenge by robbing two residents of a dormitory, but targeted the wrong people, campus officials said Tuesday.

The robbery victims were outside the party and did not make the offensive comments, authorities said.

The suspects entered the residence through an open kitchen window. One man went into a bedroom, turned on the light and slammed the door shut before demanding a laptop computer at gunpoint, UC Berkeley said.

The same robber also demanded one victim’s wallet. The second robber periodically opened the door and told his accomplice to hurry, police said.

In a separate incident in September 2005, Doxy was grazed in the wrist by a bullet in a street shooting just blocks from campus that left a woman dead. The victim, Meleia Willis-Starbuck, 19, was killed by a friend whom she had called for help during an argument with Cal football players.
