Next stop: Las Vegas, baby!

SEATTLE — Don’t forget — gambling and shopping permitting — tonight we will draw the winning name for the two-night stay at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

* * * * *

And TYaiea is the latest winner of a $100 certificate to Tropics Bar and Grill at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Coincidentally — uh, that’s right — he guessed the closest score of yesterday’s game.

* * * * *

In a road trip within a road trip, the Warriors leave for Las Vegas today. A continental breakfast will be served between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. And, again, for some reason, the wake-up call is 10 a.m. Tonight in Las Vegas, the Warriors will receive a briefing on what to avoid. The session will be conducted by Las Vegas police officers.

Hey Duffer. No marketing for me. Gotta set-up a few kegs of Heineken for my friend’s party this morning. Gotta get started early, da kegs are very heavy. I wish we had some guys for drink half, to make’um lighter and easier to carry.

  6. koakane™ September 13, 2009 5:03 am

good morning everyone. great game yesterday and congrats to da warriors and wahines on their wins yesterday. needless to say we were all so excited the road warriors beat the cats. just so happy and couldn’t stop talking about the game the whole night.

warriors were so dominate that by the beginning of the second quarter some of the WSU unfaithful was leaving our section. By the 3rd a whole bunch of them left and many not very happy.

after the game we went to the casino and ate up a storm. food was good and company great with ahouse’es, cwr, wafan, izzy, sorry but forgot this couples names and a few minutes latter hawnchopsueyboy and his son (who now is a comitted bloger cause he knows wafan and izzy neice-smaller world) joined us.

in a few hours we will be meeting again to have lunch at the crab pot and do the underground tour. so will be blogging later on this eve. still tired and heading back to bed for a small power nap.

road win babe have a good sunday and enjoy.

  8. Stephen Tsai September 13, 2009 5:08 am

It was nice to see some of the players free to walk around last night. Not sure why everything closes so early downtown. I ate a hot dog from a vendor who may or may not have had a license.

  9. Stephen Tsai September 13, 2009 5:10 am

OK, Ferd and I have to go downstairs to figure out why our supposedly pre-paid hotel bills were charged to our personal credit cards. This might impact the Vegas portion of our trip.

  10. wafan September 13, 2009 5:12 am

After yesterday, it definitely is a good morning.

  11. wafan September 13, 2009 5:13 am

Uhhh, just for clarification, the son of chopsueyboy is a friend with my cousin’s kid.

The couple KK forgot is BNS all the way from CA. We met them last year at the OSU game.

    Good morning everyone,

The comments from the UH coaches echos my sentiments.

Looking foward to the UNLV game to see the adjustments; also looking foward to the BSU/Fresno St. game this week….should be very entertaining.

    Keep it going, Warriors!!!

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Waking up with a small headache after celebrating the great win. Time to head out and make my way to Vancouver. See everyone later.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Saw on the ‘game recap’ section of ESPN dot com that UNLV’s starting QB went out in the 2d half with a sore knee…his replacement came in and threw two TD passes. Oregon St. won on a late FG. Next week’s going to be one heck of a game!

    Pomai:
    24-17 Hawaii.

  20. Garret September 13, 2009 6:07 am

I’m looking forward to being at the UNLV game! I finished collecting all the quotes I could find about the game…click on my name if you want to read the long post.

    Top of the Morning gang.
My generic coffee this am tastes just like a Primo Starbucks, THANKS to our Warriors!
Can’t wait to watch the K5 broadcast this mornining since I had to listen to the Squack box on a fuzzy AM reception. The only bummer is, the re-broadcast will be with FSN announcers?

99 Club – That 2nd string QB for unlv sure was athletic. No holds bar from him, and he ran a draw play with true grit.

    Congrats to TYaiea!

  26. addahknowjoe (via Coconut shell and string) September 13, 2009 6:42 am

Maverick- you’ll enjoy the rebroadcast of the game.

You’ll find it humorous how the announcers try desperately to find something positive to say about Wazzu. At halftime all they had were two video clips of fumble recoveries to hype on.

Jason Gesser did a good job with his sideline coverage. He couldn’t help himself when the camera panned down to his feet and revealed his true island roots! Hahahahaa!! Still, Jason could use some tips from Kekaula. Robert would’ve told him to go with shorts.

  27. addahknowjoe (via Coconut shell and string) September 13, 2009 6:43 am

    Aloha n ‘gmorning Slugger! =)

    Great (Northwest) Morning All!

Not that I’m in the PNW but great to hear all the Tsaikos having a lot of fun up there.

As long as the time schedule works, don’t fix it! Maybe eating breakfast before waking up is part of the winning recipe for Road Warriors.

Is the media also expected to be briefed by LVPD?

    Congratulations TYAiea!

Still basking in the glow of an overwhelming victory.

I promised myself that I would not post anything negative about the team or the coaching staff. Afterall, we have enuff critical comments from a few armchair QB’s to fill an entire Sport’s page.

It was not the 56 – 0 perfect win I had predicted, but a win is a win! Hehehe! J/K. It was my confidence booster. My way of telling the naysayers to watch da boyz go for the gusto out there!…and you know what?…they did!

Next weekend is a different story. We will be met by a team that will be like a gunslinger waiting to put a bullet thru our cowboy hat. They want to be the ones to knock us off our pedestal.

So what do we do? We savor the win on travel day and soak up the congratulatory wishes. Then, it’s back to business! Pay attention to the coaches as they breakdown the game film. Listen to the needed adjustments. Most of all, continue to keep your heads in the game and execute your assignments as you did in the 1st half yesterday.

You’ve proven to yourselves that you can play as a well-oiled machine. Now, just keep it going! We fans will be there for you in full force!

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Warriors looked great yesterday even if they slowed down in the second half. Tremendous improvement across the board, and if the old adage about improvement from first to second game is true, then it looks like the Warriors are going to have a great season.

It was nice to see so many more Warriors gettin’ into the mix on both sides of the ball. This team has a LOT of individual talent, and they play well together.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  68. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc September 13, 2009 9:17 am

Congratulations to TYaiea – as last week’s winner, all I can do is claim the fame.

Mahalo again to Stephen for the 12!!!! volleyball tickets for the three-day tournament which when combined with our six tickets for a total of 18 tickets really gave us an excuse – which we didn’t need – to attend all three nights. Unfortunately; I wasn’t able to give away but 7 of the 12 so the next time such largess comes upon us, perhaps it would be better to select two winners.

The Las Vegas game will definitely be a challenge for those of us here in Honolulu if for no other reason than the Wahine are also playing during the last half of the football game .

NOTE: UH ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT!! You still have the game listed for 3 pm on the website! It’s 5 pm and the Wahine game starts at 7.

Did an initial scan of the programming schedule for next Saturday & Sunday and could not find any mention of a re-broadcast of the football game. Will call tomorrow morning to find out wassup.

Have a great day everyone and Happy Trails from Seattle to Las Vegas.

  69. Dirty Commish September 13, 2009 9:18 am

Watching the replay last night, I don’t think the score really reflected how this game could have gone.

Wazzu for the most part was able to run pretty effectively. I think if they didn’t kill themselves with turnovers, this might have been a totally different game.

Pretty sure UNLV will not be as generous, so I hope Fonoti is ready to come back and stiffen up the front 7.

That being said, oh man we could have put up 50 on them if we didn’t turn over the ball as well. I already went on record saying Rolo had a bit of JJ in him and he made me look smarter than I really am. 😛

Hopefully they can keep the foot on the gas and keep up the high scoring offense with a nasty hard hitting defense. Go Warriors, baby.

  72. buffoman September 13, 2009 9:36 am

My evaluation of the game is that we still have to get over the mental lapses. I thought that GA got a bit greedy when he was stripped. He needed to “take what was given” and not look for another home run ball. holding the ball that long was like going back to how he played in the past. It seems that Inoke still holds the ball too far from his body when running. That did not seem to improve, which ultimately contributed to his fumble. GA also needs to know that it’s okay to slide, especially when the team is in scoring range. A field goal is also a score, whereas a fumble is a momentum changer.

Very nice effort and it can and should get better. Oh, that penalty on the hard hit should not have drawn a flag. If you watch the WSU promo clips between the WSU – Stanford game prior to our game, there were a couple of higher hits that did not appear to draw flags but were celebrated.

Lastly, while Rolo did a great job, I also thought that the rceivers looked like those of the JJ era. Let’s give props to coach Ron who took on the role of addressing that element of the R&S. He did a great job with the receiving corp. Great decision on his part and coah Mac to recognize it.

  73. mctruck September 13, 2009 9:46 am

I believe in Rolo, and the coaching staff for being brave enough to make the necessary change ups……it worked!!!
Keep it going fellas, we’re proud of you all.

    Happy Birthday Garret!

  77. madeinhawaii September 13, 2009 10:29 am

Get rid of those turn overs and this team is scary good. 600+ yards of offense. Could have been 700! Zounds!

  78. tom mui September 13, 2009 10:30 am

OLDIE: Yesterday’s football game’s signal was really bad (Oceanic) with audio and video breaking up.

This morning’s replay on Channel 5 seems to be OK except the game started at 9:00 – I had thought it was going to be at 9:30.

In any event, did you record it? Was it OK?

    Best to Peggy!

  79. tom mui September 13, 2009 10:31 am

Curveball – thanks for the best (Bess) info. I knew he had scored but did not know he made 7 receptions. Was this as a slot or as a wide?

  80. HiFlyer September 13, 2009 10:31 am

    Happy Birthday Garret

  81. madeinhawaii September 13, 2009 10:37 am

    Dirty Commish,

While the Warriors gave up a lot of yards against the run between the 20’s. I felt that they got really stingy in the redzone and that made a world of difference.

  82. royvic September 13, 2009 10:41 am

    …warriorchick

preempting the blog during the Warriors 35-0 run in giving an update to the Boise game…hmmm.

Here the team is making a big splash and rolling all 7’s and all the posters are hooraying and hollering on the blog and you make your appearance and wanting to remind us of the Boise score. Huh?

    Pulling our leg? Right?

Any event I had to chuckle. More so because it’s impromptu and out of the ordinary.

I still gotta disagree with that personal foul on JB hit looked vicious but it was clean, man our d really loves to lay the wood.

Anybody post this yet? ESPN Helmet Stickers for Week 2

    Non-AQ Helmet stickers

Greg Alexander, QB, Hawaii: Completed 25-of-35 passes for 441 yards and three touchdowns. Alexander’s yards passing were the most against Washington State since 1989.

    Honorable Mention

Greg Salas, WR, Hawaii: Had seven catches for 194 yards and a touchdown in the 38-20 win against Washington State.

  86. Optimist September 13, 2009 10:56 am

    O-Line looks much improved
    Alexander didn’t tuck and run
Rodney Bradley is an improvement at wideout over Salas
Salas is a beast now at slot.
Pilares still got moves to juke
Defense is looking better than expected

  87. Pessimist September 13, 2009 10:58 am

Our run D is not that great
Our corners are lining up 8-10 yards off the receivers
We are only covering 2 wr’s when the other team is in trips formation
Saw a lot of missed 1st tackles
    Fumbles

  88. Realist September 13, 2009 11:01 am

We win 10+ games this season and no one will give much of a rip.

  89. madeinhawaii September 13, 2009 11:07 am

Alexander went into this week as #20 in total offense…

    Today:
Total Offense: #3. Greg Alexander, Hawaii 844yds

Receiving Yds: #1. Greg Salas, Hawaii 375yds (55 yards more than the next guy)

UH Warriors currently #11 in total offense.

If we win 10 games this season and no gives a rip so what?

We won 12 in 2007 and no one really outside the UH fanbase here in Hawaii or the Hawaii transplants on the mainland gave a rip anyway.

    Same story all the time.

Thank you for all the birthday wishes…but it isn’t my birthday today. However, it is my birthday month, so I just got back from an awesome Benihana lunch. One of our houseguests treated my family there today–it helps that Benihana gives a $30 certificate that can be used anytime during your birthday month. That cut the bill by more than half.

Unfortunately, the only place where Benihana doesn’t take the $30 certificate is in Hawaii.

Nice to see everyone at yesterday for the game! Even got to meet infrequent blogger MP yesterday, although they choose to sit on the bar side. He was very pleased to meet pride. and las vegas after the game.

Turning our thoughts to Vegas, some Tsai-kos are looking for a ride/carpool from downtown to the Kiku Hana dinner/karaoke bash. I am listing them on the Las Vegas Tsai-ko page. Please kokua if possible.

If you are looking for a ride between downtown and Kiku Hana, please email me and/or post on the blog to be listed.

Back in Arizona for the interim…..will be out of AZ for good next week.

It was nice seeing some familiar faces again at the Washington State game yesterday ~ Izzy, wafan, djmitcho, BNS, Stretch, chawan_cut.

It was also a pleasure to finally put some faces to the names of some of the most prolific Tsaikos around ~ The A-House Family, koakane, g-nalo, PowderPuff, hawnchopsuey & son. I hope I didn’t forget anyone else.

With regards to the game, a win’s a win. Sure things could have gone differently (for better or worse), but the last thing we’d want happen is for them to get complacent. Improvement can always be achieved whether one notices it or not.

  103. Willie September 13, 2009 12:02 pm

Watching the replay, man those announcers really got that Pac 10 All Mighty Greater Than Thou chip on their shoulders. Talked about how the Kittens could accept a pounding loss by 50 points by other Pac 10 teams, but to be down by 35 to a WAC team, repeated several times (a WAC) team is shameful! Wow no wonder the Kittens pulled out of the 2011 game here.

    Go Warriors in Sin City!

Mr. & Mrs. A-House ~ Thank you for dinner last night! You didn’t have to, but I figured there was little I could do to stop you. The food was good, although the deserts most likely did me in. I also appreciate the book. I’ll probably start reading it once I get settled in Virginia.

Too bad I didn’t record this morning’s re-telecast. I could use the improved audio.

A great game yesterday with still much to build on. Showed the potential to emulate the run and shoot teams of the past by scoring with shocking quickness!!

    i saw the…
coming of paipai falemalu develop even further.
again elliot purcell had a tremendous game and will soon make us forget about his cousins.
rj made a great adjustment to the mlb position.
haku got in some great licks
spencer and mana roamed the centerfield like they owned it.
lametrius davis reclaim the lcb position???
the defense’s attitude gained a lot of confidence.

    and….
ron lee and rolo proved all you naysayers completely wrong.
the agressive playcalling on offense complimented the aggression on defense.
good to see mack stay away from the offense.
good to see wideouts get in the game.
hot rod bradley was a well kept secret during recruiting last year.
    green will be exciting.
the run game now needs some attention.
why did the wildcat not go option wide?
we will learn to hold on to the ball this week.
the special teams play is much better than last year.
dunnachie will soon have a breakout game once the comfort level kicks in.
unlv will not be a push over.
or is oregon state in a state of rebuilding.

    more importantly….
this game did wonders for our recruiting prospects a lot more than one could imagine.
a split in the next two games is imperative.
the oline is making strides each day.

I agree with Kazz. Gesser was sucking up big time. Must really want that job.

Oline did one hell of a job in the 1st half. The d stepped it up again. That hit by JB looked good to me. The players made mistakes. They are correctable. Alexander and Inoke need to tuck ball away better and tuck in their elbows when they run with the ball. But coaches know what they are doing. All is good.

Good to see Purcell back in action. Now if we can also get Fonoti back at full speed. Look out.

Liz, made & al: Thanks…Just had to put it out there because I HATE when “fans” bash their team & Coaching staff. I’ve been a player & a Coach, so I know that winning aint easy…and even when you do, it’s not as easy as it looks! Like many of us “Die Hard Warrior Fans” and “Tsaiko’s” we just want to see our team WIN…now that the JJ/Colt & Co. era is over the scoreboard hasnt been as “bright” but hopefull this game was that corner we needed to turn to become that High Flying Offense we’ve been accustomed to seeing since JJ’s arrival… With that being said… SEE YOU ALL IN VEGAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  146. madeinhawaii September 13, 2009 3:32 pm

VegasInsider has UNLV as a 6.5 point favorite. Warriors better make sure they put on their blinders and not get distrated in Vegas. Big game for them. In fact, each subsequent game is bigger and more important from here on out.

  147. Shannon September 13, 2009 3:33 pm

  148. madeinhawaii September 13, 2009 3:37 pm

    SteveM,

@99, The only reason we chose to sit on the bar side @ Genji is that we didn’t want to degrade the high standard of behavior set by the Tsaiko Ohana during the game. (hehehe, could hear you guys all the way from the other room, loud and clear. Right On. GO WARRIORS!!!)

Was very nice meeting you, Peaches, Ralph, Protector, and Pride. (Had somebody else but cannot recollect.)

And thanks for telling Tina we were part of the Tsaikos. I think it helped, had excellent service.

Will be in Las Vegas this coming weekend but, hope to see you the folowing week @ Genji’s.

Once again, thanks again for the warm welcome you gave us at Genji’s.

  164. Shannon September 13, 2009 4:29 pm

I dont know if there’d be a 6.5 pt swing but maybe go down to 3… UNLV is still @ home, their defense is still gonna give us fits (according to media) and our wins are against a DII team and lowly WSU…

  167. madeinhawaii September 13, 2009 4:40 pm

Hmm.. found this bit by Bobby Curran back in August 12, 2009/

With UH football less than four weeks away, the players and coaches are down to the serious business of preparing for the opener. Now they can put behind them the circus that descended after Coach Greg McMackin’s unfortunate remarks at the WAC media days. Lost in the shuffle has been the hiring by Portland State of Hawaii grad assistant Craig Stutzman, who had functioned as the receivers’coach. Grad assistants receive tuition and a small stipend but no health benefits, and Portland State offered a full-time position.

Now Coach Mac has a dilemma because it will be nearly impossible for a replacement G.A. to step into Stutzman’s shoes. Currently there are more coaches on defense than offense and the receivers may have to be coached by committee.

Ironic, because this may be the deepest corps of pass catchers in UH history.

Now we know. Ron is coaching the receivers, and the plays are decided by committee with Rolo calling which one will be used when. It’s all coming together.

I am still deliriously happy with the Warriors’ play yesterday. But, although, I’m an optimist a heart, I already have some concerns after watching UNLV and OSU play. It seemed to me that the Rebels are significantly bigger and quicker than WSU was in their front 7. They were giving OSU fits. And they have more experienced and bigger DB’s. Alexander did real well when WSU could not pressure him. I don’t think he’ll have as much time against the Rebels.

UNLV’s offense has some excellent skill position players as opposed to WSU’s inexperienced wr’s. WSU did have some solid running backs. Overall, the quality of the opposition seems better this weekend. I expect a hard fought and close game. Wouldn’t hurt my feelings if the Warriors make the game a blow-out and own the 9th island LOL

    Hiya Tsaikos.

    Shannon

    Bravo. Bravissimo. Shaka bradda.

and now we can tell errybody, da Wussies no like play us. an day don’t. Gesser can make all da excuses he like. OSU will not wanna play us now. our coaches are starting to do da high roller action.

    Go Warriors!!!

    Shannon,

kekoa is right in describing you.

and all you guyz, this will be our third game this year. the playing is gonna get better. our coaching is getting better too.

Ron and Rolo will be figuring things out. Shaw will be figuring things out. BSmith will be figuring things out.

    GO WARRIORS.

For sure. UNLV is going to take or want to take away the middle of the field away from our offense. UNLV is WAY better than WSU and Alexander and the offensive line will be pressured in a way they did not see yesterday at all.

I was expecting the Vegas line to be in favor of UNLV considering how the Rebels have been hyped up to be as having one of their better teams in recent memory.

    One game at a time.

This one again, as with all games, falls on the coaches to prepare, keep the kids focused, and keep the kids disciplined.

Remember what Blaze said? The team knows they are playing for Hawaii. To make us forget the troubles for just a little while. That means they’re playing for the 9th island too. 😀

We’ve got RON LEE. and Rolovich. and Shaw. and we’re getting Brian Smith quality coaching opportunities. no doubt we’re heading in the right direction.

Looking over Coach Mack’s shoulder are always going to be the non believers in his coaching ability. So what the big deal?

Leading up to the WSU victory, seemingly, there were a bunch of fans here and at other sites posting their discontent with the direction of where the program was heading. So, again, what’s the big deal?

Just because a person shakes their head at the coaches decisions, how he’ running the team or how he’s speaking in public why should that make them a bad person?

When the most congenial and astute people (even here) make announcements, too, like the coach isn’t cut out to be a coach (which I agree with). And make observations in the CA game of the players (esp. the WR) looking like orphans on the sidelines with out any coaches coaching them. Then I would think there are problems with the team and coaching at the top.

And, additionally, how Coach Shaw and Coach Tormey looking as pale as white ghost at some of Coach Mack’s decisions in the first game would suggest that it’s also not a delusion that there are problems with the team. (note to Coach Tormey this is a heads up… you’ll look paler than a whitest ghost when you see how Coach Mack does his recruiting, too.)

And subsequently it induces fans to speak out and vent. Combined this with how the coach makes these proclamations that the WR are the best in UH history and the O-line played an excellent in the first game, when we know we saw Alexander scrambling for his life most of the time it fuels skeptic fan’s tempers when they hear this kind of talk coming from the coaches mouth because it’s not true..and it leads ones to having lesser respect for the coach.

Think of the residual effects, though, of suggestive and angry post of all the fans voicing their discontent on this blog and on other sites when it reaches the coaches–one it should challenge and inspire them in getting better. And this good.

Ostracizing the ones that aren’t patty cakers that’s others prerogatives, I concede. But remember that when people shake the tree it does have an affect–sometimes for the better.

And my hope is that it does to coach Mack.

bh2 this is what I said about rolo

    # royvic:
    September 8th, 2009 at 9:45 pm

Listened to the Coach Mack Show.

What lingers in my mind is Coach Mack’s unsinkable faith in Coach Rolo.

He mentioned that Coach Rolo will be an offensive coordinator and head coach someday. And he is convinced that he’ll be a good one.

He mentioned (and these are his words) he turned down applicants from the pros in his decision in hiring Coach Rolo instead as his QB coach.

On the prospects of Coach Rolo assuming the play calling Coach Mack is convinced that he’ll do a good job. And he projects him in being a quick study.

Me personally,I got to hand it to Coach Mack, though, succeed or fail, he’s throwing all his chips in the pot on Coach Rolo succeeding.

I’m not going to be sinister and say this is sudden death, but this move is interesting, and at the very least if it succeeds it’ll keep the naysayers at bay and it’ll win over the detractors.

When you look at this move intuitively and not with tunnel vision, like myself sometimes or most of the time, what do you think the reaction is going be like for the players on the team with Coach Rolo doing the play calling now? Honestly?
This should be a huge boost for them. It should get them fired up. Think about it Coach Rolo is one of them–they’ll do spirited work and they’ll jump to moon for him in making Coach Rolo look good. This is my hope.

After the WSU game I wrote-

I noticed basically Coach Rolo showing greater leadership on the sideline, with beaming-like confidence.

Is this all bad.. bh2 because you seem bitter with your “ahems, ahems, ahems–and I don’t know if it’s directed towards me. Or to whom?

You do remember how we ( I ) whined at the UH athletic web site and how it affected change and how it came a lot better. Same principal applies to the football team. Watch, you’ll see it’ll work, too.

    MadeinHawaii,
da answer is yes. Jason John Gesser (Born May 31, 1979 in Honolulu, Hawaii), formally an American football quarterback for the Utah Blaze of the Arena Football League, is the Head football coach at Eastside Catholic School in Sammamish, Wa. He is the grandson of Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame member Joseph “Red” Dunn.

He helped lead SLS to 2 State championships in the late 90s under Cal Lee. Then he went Wassu and helped lead them to 2 10 win seasons and the Rose Bowl.

Still yet, his TV ratings musta plummetededed yestaday. He was worse dan dat guy we all hate so much, da good fo nuttin Mel guy. 😀

For some reason I just felt the need to be one of the MANY that are appreciative of your past and most recent initiatives to help the UH football team.

First with the JUGS machine and most recently the travel-ready bike.

Of course you’ll be the FIRST person to remind others that many came together to assist with the funds and it was not a one man job.

Initiative is key and when people actually take steps to do so, it not only inspires ACTUAL change, but DIRECTLY inspires change and makes the “decision makers” take notice.

Hey .. whatever. They call it… they give it their best shot. It works or it doesn’t. BUT, that’s their job. They make the hard decisions, they call it and give it their best shot. Sometimes it works… sometimes.. it needs improvement.

As a fan.. I root and toot whatever the decision.. moan when we lose.. hope for a quick fix and turn around… and root and toot at the next decision. 4th and 20, down by 24 with 12 minutes to play….as a fan.. I think.. “Still got chance! IMUA.”

If we get trounced, bounced to the last ounce of our breath, I think… das okay.. still got next week, next season, we can fix, we’ll be ready and I root and toot some more.

When they think outside of the box, and makes me scratch my head, I think..”this took some serious considerations”…and my gut says.. trust em, let them build the program the way they see best. Sit back and LEARN.

What’s best for our Warriors isn’t just about winning, it’s about every other little thing that goes into making a successful program. Selecting the staff, the training program, lobbying for the equipment and facilities, recruiting, maintaining and improving academic achievements and marketing. Making the right sacrifices.

Looking at the big picture, I cannot imagine anyone better for head coach.

  209. palolo September 13, 2009 8:07 pm

Coach Mac calls the defense, Coach Rolo calls the offense. All will be good in the Warriors play calling. Don’t let the locals fool you. Big time football requires big time coaches. I wish the Lee brothers could handle, but we need the outside help to call the game and Cal and Ron to keep the Kahuku and St. Louis boys coming.

    Dirty Commish,

While the Warriors gave up a lot of yards against the run between the 20’s. I felt that they got really stingy in the redzone and that made a world of difference.

Thank goodness for that. I fully expect them to improve even from this game as this was the first game on the road. A lot less overrunning plays and bad angles from the Cent. Arkansas game, so the players are studying the film and correcting mistakes.

How many Hawaii fans were in the Qwest stands? I could hear the “D-FENSE” on the radio broadcast.

Should be plenty plenty more in Vegas, making this almost a road home game for the Warriors. The defense really fed off of that and hopefully this will give them a bit of a boost at UNLV.

Silly question: how do they wash the uniforms when they’re on the road or do they just let it air out naturally?

Gesser absolutely did play for Cal Lee at SLS.

Cover photo for the 1997 Media Guide featured: Craig Stutzmann, Jason Gesser, Tony Tata, Keala Loo and Geste Ornellas.
Also on the roster that year:
    Lyle Castro
    Timmy Chang
    La’anui Correa
    Eddie Fiaseu
    Teranna Fiaseu
    Fabian Fonoti
    Chad Kahale
    Shane Kajioka
    Phil Kauffman
    Una Latu
    William Lobendahn
    Keola Loo
    William Maumau
    Joe Siofele
    Sean Souza
    Junior Tagoai
    Sam Taulealea
    Sione Thompson
    So’o Tufaga
    Gerald Welch
    Junior Wong

….and these were just the D1 prospects.

    Play calling still mattered some…..

okay, let me say 2. Falemalu.

okay, let me say 4. Shaw. Tormey. and you know these weren’t just his ideas. the other coaches had a hand in these decisions too.

my criticism about Coach is how da heck we neva handle Destin Stewart better. his gramma, political correctness? i say perfect!!!! 😀

    😛

Saw Yoda on the sidelines complete with standard coach’s garb & headset. Logical conclusion is that he is hooked up directly to Ron Lee to convey info to the receivers. Is he a recent addition as a grad assistant? I know the former Baltimore Raven’s LB is one of the GAs. How many can a team have?

Hope someone out there has answers. . .Mahalo!

  216. d1島 September 13, 2009 8:36 pm

    Yoda is still undergrad.

  217. madeinhawaii September 13, 2009 8:40 pm

If Ron and Cal were willing to uproot and leave Hawaii 15 – 20 years ago and coach in the College level outside of Hawaii, I bet many would have been singing praises as some did of Norm Chow. But that they chose to be satisfied with staying in the islands. For this, I am extremely grateful. They became coaching assistants to JJ and have been a huge plus for the Warriors. They brought stability and continuity when everything else was in turmoil after JJ and most of the other coaches jumped ship to SMU. As a result, they helped our Warrior program heal faster than expected by even the most optimistic of us. Now only has it healed, it looks like we only had a small burp rather than an upheaval.

Cooke field.. excuse… Ching Athletic Complex looks amazing… The Aloha is getting much needed Aloha.. albeit slowly, but surely. The Coach Mac Show, which is on tonight at 10:30, is going national. Recruiting is on an upswing and the Warriors went for 600+ yards against a BCS team! The Grayshirts and Redshirts in the wings looks very promising.

  218. madeinhawaii September 13, 2009 8:42 pm

    d1… amazing roster..
Cal had an eye for talent.

  219. Pride. September 13, 2009 8:49 pm

I couldn’t sleep last night. I was soooooooo excited about yesterday’s game. Offense reminded me of when Rolo was pulling the trigger against BYU in 2001. Defense was rocking the house, hitting the c*#p out of the Cougars. Yesterday’s first half will give the coaches good film for the rest of the season to show the players what they are capable of doing.

Had to remember the old mantra: “You’re never as as good as think you are after you win, and you’re never as bad as think you are after you lose.”

But never mind the mantra, we looked damn good yesterday. If we can learn how to keep the ball off of the carpet, and maintain the same intensity for every game. We’ll be alright.

okay, nuff butt rubbin and scratchin… time fo get back to business…

    great game, huh!

  223. Ralph September 13, 2009 8:57 pm

Tsaikos our Midnight family will be leaving us tomorrow (Monday) to relocate to Arlington, Texas. They will join many tsaikos in LV this week before continuing on to Texas. I told him at least he’ll be living in the suburbs of Dallas and he can watch June Jones Ponies- he never said a word, just smiled.

  224. d1島 September 13, 2009 9:01 pm

    Ralph,

I was sad to hear about that news from midnight and Barbara at the last tailgate.

They are very good people and will be missed. 🙁

  225. madeinhawaii September 13, 2009 9:04 pm

Always sad to see friends, family, and fellow fans having to leave the islands. I wish them well and success. But thank goodness for the internet, blogs, and forums to keep us all connected no matter where we end up, eh?

AND FOOTBALL to give us all something in common to talk about — when we are not eating.

  226. uhwarriors September 13, 2009 9:05 pm

Reminder – No Na Koa lunch meeting on 9/14. There will be one next week when the team and coaches are back in town.

Notice from the Pu’u vent, Kilauea, Big Island…da bugga neva show, da only one with white hair was the Madam herself. She said she goin’ to Pepeekeo to do a repossession, her mana gave us the win, now she wants the hawaiian.

  228. Pride. September 13, 2009 9:08 pm

Excited about the future. Good to see the young bearcubs getting their feet wet. Falemalu, Liko Satele, Meatoga, Hanohano, and Correa will remember this game and use it as a confidence builder. They will play in the next few years at Army, Colorado, Washington, USC, and BYU. Beating a Pac-10 school at the Seattle Seahawks’ Stadium will be in their memory bank. They will be ready to face anyone, anywhere, as they continue building up good memories this season. Hopefully next year, we will bring in a new crop of young offensive linemen who will gain the same experiences. Just like the years when Samson Satele, Tala Esera, and Dane Uperesa were young bearcubs themselves.

  229. Pride. September 13, 2009 9:10 pm

    Aloha Midnights.

  230. madeinhawaii September 13, 2009 9:16 pm

I just realized that the Warriors have two half-byes. One after UNLV (10 days) and then immediately after LaTech (9 days) and then it’s all business till the end of the season. That’s a tough schedule.

d1, I guess that Yoda is kinda like a volunteer coach. Has limited responsibilities and does not count against the number of coaches allowed? He looked real official on TV.

Best wishes to Midnight and Barbara. I always enjoyed singing together with Midnight at karaoke kalls. I didn’t even know they were leaving until a couple days ago, they never said anything when I was talking to them at the last tailgate. (I came late, so I missed the announcement.) If I had known, I would have given them each a big hug.

That’s true, but you forgot to mention that it means water and not the green and brown bottles as some of our Tsaikos will get confused by that. lol

Good comments on Gordy Shaw last night by Coach Mack too. You can see when you watch and listen to him, dat is one classy and smooth coach. And the oline guys, they appreciate a great coach. Aaron Kia has his head totally on right.

and so does Letuli. wuz just great watchin him no give up and run down da WSU DB. yup, if i didn’t no betta, i’d put it out dat Shaw is a white
Singletary. 😀 hard nosed. akchally, in many ways he is. he get dat positive mana about hisself. good ting we get Rolo to keep away from da grind em into da tarmac kinda guy. until we need da grind em into da tarmac kinda guyz.
