Next phase

Today is the first day of UH’s fall semester, which means the football roster is allowed to expand. None of the additions was allowed to participate  in today’s two-hour practice. There’s a waiting period while they attend orientation sessions and undergo physical examinations.

From today’s practice:

• It was announced that starting Wednesday, practices will be closed to everyone but the players’ immediate family members and local media.

• The Warriors will have a closed practice Thursday at Aloha Stadium. It runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

• Former UH wideout Jason Rivers attended the early part of today’s practice. Rivers left  to take a TB test. He will serve as student manager this season.

• Linebacker Aaron Brown still remains sidelined because of a sprained right ankle. He suffered the injured a few days before training camp and has not practiced since then. There is growing concern because Brown is a considered a “playmaker” who has several specific roles in two of the defensive packages.

• Left wideout Rodney Bradley, who underwent surgery last October to repair two leg fractures, was declared physically fit. Now, it appears, he is back to form in all aspects. He ran precise routes today, repeatedly cutting away from tight coverage to make catches. Next up: What to do about backup Darius Bright.

• Backup offensive lineman Kainoa LaCount  again was working with the first unit at right tackle. Laupepa Letuli is still the starter there, but the trainers are being cautious because of his recent back spasms.

  29. bb August 23, 2010 8:28 am

#29-caller brought up concerns about how recruiting would be affected by all of the changes going on. Saying that we might not get the same type of recruits…Caller also brought up Masoli. BC in his “i am right you are wrong tone” pretty much said recruiting isn’t really going to be affected and Masoli is not good enough (with his skillset) to play for UH.

What got to me was BC’s tone of voice. The caller wasn’t trying to be confrontational, he was just sharing an opinion and BC’s tone was not cool to a caller that was just bringing up a legitimate topic and concern.

I would say its alot higher than that considering all the cutbacks Ne-vah-dah is experiencing. The question is, who left first? Fresno or Nevada? When it comes to litigation, UNR’s legal counsel is invites contention.

  41. madeinhawaii August 23, 2010 9:34 am

Orsini credits Jones and his staff for building the system at SMU that succeeded where no one else could for a quarter of a century. SMU touts admissions increases and better exposure for SMU as the football program has improved. SMU gained 1,300 new season ticket holders this season though the projected total of about 7,500 season-ticket holders still pales in comparison to say TCU, which has set school records and could reach 17,000 this season.

Those numbers seem awfully low… are prices that high?

But what I like is this sentence..

SMU touts admissions increases and better exposure for SMU as the football program has improved.

    Pomai,

You got your wish! (sort of) Thursday night practice at Aloha Stadium is closed. I wonder if it’ll be more significant than just a “this is our home” tour for the new players?

More importantly, will Coach Tomey be there to ensure a sufficient amount of “oohs” and “aahs” for the new scoreboard? Was there this past weekend for HS football and was kinda impressed with the clarity of the picture. Everyone (got a Mouse?) will have to keep in mind that “lip reading” will be very easy to do now! 😯

  60. madeinhawaii August 23, 2010 12:16 pm

I guess practices will be closed to the public until game day, eh? Makes sense as this may be one of our biggest games to kick off the new Warrior Era… with or without the WAC.

Besides, there’s not enough parking on campus now that school has started, anyway.

  61. madeinhawaii August 23, 2010 12:17 pm

  65. Not an Expert August 23, 2010 12:30 pm

BYU holds a lot of the aces. MWC becomes the old WAC if BYU goes independent. Thompson is a good negotiator and strategist. The news of C-USA & MWC at this time to hold a title game is only a ploy to make the MWC position look better and make the 3 WAC teams leaving thinking they are heading to greener pastures. Thompson is a great promoter and sure does help his conference to take advantage of things. C-USA, Tompson will do anything and while proposing to work with C-USA will forgo any relationship to take a school from their conference to join the MWC. He’ll raid your conference cause as a wolf he knows how to act in sheeps clothing very well when at the your gates.

When BYU leaves MWC back to square 2 and when TCU leaves back to square one. Silver lining is for Hawaii to negotiate strongly for the benefit of BYU and in a way ride their coat tails for now. Do everything to help BYU benefit with their plans and indirectly it will help stabalize Hawaii’s athletic future and hopefully position it better as times continues.

Mark my prediction, a leader like Thompson will be the failure of the MWC because he’ll get the same medicine for what he is doing to the WAC. Why because the MWC would of been okay with BYU leaving and the WAC would have benefited a little.

I can’t believe it’s finally back to school for the little ones. I don’t know how the teachers deal with everything. Here in Florida the schools are so under budget the teachers don’t even have teacher aids for the kindergarten and first graders. I can’t believe this year some of the local schools are actually asking for parents to provide toilet paper as school supplies. And what happened to all this money the lottery was going to provide?

    thinking out loud:

If the MWC is on the cusp of “being inside the BCS circle”, why is TCU wanting to leave and go back to C-USA?

What do they know that is pushing them in this direction? Is C-USA closer to the “inside” than MWC with the loss of BYU and Utah? OK, BYU has not yet decided on leaving.

BYU, Utah, and TCU were the constant in being raked in the top 25 nearly all or all of last year. Was another team from C-USA ranked?

IF MWC gains one (BSU) and loses three ( byu, tcu, utah ) who benefits most?

Did someone mention that there will be another “shake up” in the next 2 or 3 weeks? What a way to start the 2010 football season!!!!!

    Steve/RedZone:

I believe Na Wahine basketball team had only 1 senior last year – at least we saw only 1 that was honored at “senior night”.

If Leilani is gone, maybe the reason that Coach Dana had an extra scholie to give out for 2010.

Next year, Coach will have 5 scholarsips to award. Has she received any commits for 2011? For 2011, the gal from Molokai will play “part-time” as she will be on a VB scholarship. 2012 Coach Dana has 6 scholarsips to award. Yikes, in 2 years, she replaces 11 players of 15.

RedZone, yep, $60 for season ticket was a steal last year. We bought 3 tickets last year and it was $20 less than premium seat charge at Aloha Stadium for one seat.

  114. roysan16 August 23, 2010 2:44 pm

    pomai,

USC over Hawaii 66 to 0.

4 long runs up the gut of 80 yards or longer.

3 screen passes of fifty yards or longer resulting in touchdowns.

2 interception returns by USC for two more touchdowns.

And 3 points on a 50 yard field goal, which the USC kicker kicked on first down in getting some practice time in.

USC reserves enter the game midway through the second quarter.

Kiffins doing the hula before half time.

The USC cheerleaders are mimicking Kiffin. USC fans in attendance laugh.

UH fans start leaving midway through the third quarter with USC ahead 59-0, with some departing fans asking passerby’s if they are interested in taking their season tickets off their hands (I guess in saving their sanities).

A national TV audience are holding their stomachs in from laughing so hard. With most turning the channels to something that’s more watchable.

ESPN preempts the game at the half and shows a rerun of WSOP.

The USC athletic director texts JD if he can get USC out of future contracted games.

The UH coaches up in the box look shocked.

The UH players faces look grim.

The UH band accidentally plays the song “We are the champions” late in the fourth quarter, which gets a big laugh from everyone in the stadium.

A scattering a boos come late in the game when UH attempts a 25 yard field goal that was eventually missed.

Hawaii starters, offense and defense, play the entire game. Although the head coach was seen trying to sub some reserves in.

Fans depart the stadium with heavy hearts.

After the game Coach Mack, in his post game conference, tells the media he thought his players played a great game, says he’s very, very proud of them. A media person let out a smirk. Other local media types with disgust written on their faces also follow with a smirk at hearing the coach describe how his players played.

…And the most important thing is that I hope this motivates the UH coaches, players and team. Very few, here, I bet, would realize what I just did.

What happened to the LLWS game between Georgia and Ohio?

  124. Derek August 23, 2010 3:36 pm

Listening to the Herd today, Colin Cowherd doesn’t think much of Boise St. and neither TCU. Oh, he thinks they are nice teams and all, but they should never play for the National Championship. They wouldn’t have a chance against Florida, Alabama, Texas, Ohio State, and USC and the big boys. He said Boise St.’s schedule is very weak and they are playing about 8 patsies. Unfortunately for Hawaii, we are one of the 8 patsies. But, I never heard him say that Boise St. is not BCS worthy, only that they should not be considered for the National Championship, even if they are undefeated because their schedule is just too weak.

If I was Boise St. and TCU they should get out of the MWC and try to go to the Big 12. Hehe, Hehe!

  135. Michigan Warrior August 23, 2010 4:03 pm

#115… What? Oh ye of little faith!

Changing the subject… I posted near the end of yesterday’s blog… a different angle to try to balance opponents’ travel to Hawaii.

While the NCAA has the Hawaii/Alaska Exemption in place for football, I wonder if we can negotiate something with the BCS? They have been more and more generous in their offerings to non-AQ conferences lately. Can we get one more concession from them?

Have the BCS create a separate fund specifically to be used for travel (air, bus, and hotel) to Hawaii (yes, and Alaska). (Meals not included; delays are circumstantial, and thus, will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis). This fund will cover all sports. This will not cover Hawaii’s travels. (If we remain D-1, we gotta pay for something).

For every team that comes to Hawaii, they must submit an itemized report for reimbursement. Don’t know who will operate this fund, but that can be figured out later. Each team/sport will have a maximum number allowed to travel that is eligible for reimbursement.

Any deviation from a set guideline, which results in excess charges, will be paid for by the visiting school. (To avoid later arguments, this agreement will be part of every contract with every school who agrees to come to Hawaii for any athletic event.) Reimbursable funds will be set according to school’s location/region, as well as type of sport team (ie. number of athletes, coaches, trainers, and tutors if necessary).

I’m sure there are other factors to take in, but my dinner is calling, and I’m starving. So, if we negotiate like crazy… what do you guys think?

  158. whitey August 23, 2010 5:17 pm

    From the LA Times

“To open the season, the Trojans play Hawaii, and based on their record last year which was 6-7, the Trojans should easily handle the Warriors. The team needs to come out strong, find a rhythm, and play aggressive, smart football.”

Sheesh, I thought that that was our game plan. Must have spies, so need to close practice.

  159. whitey August 23, 2010 5:21 pm

If the Trojans don’t handle business against the Warriors, it will be a very long season in Los Angeles. If they get the job done, look for them to continue and build off of the momentum they created in Honolulu.

LA Times (continuing on the article):

Nine days after the game in Honolulu, the Trojans will be hosting the Virginia Cavaliers at the Coliseum. This is a must win—a no-brainer, actually—because losing to Virginia would a disaster for the Trojans.

The Cavaliers are coming off a 3-9 season last year, and finished last in the ACC Coastal Division.

The Trojans need to handle business early and often, then let guys from the second team get some reps in. This should be like a practice for the Trojans.

Disasters can happen anytime, so to take any team cheaply, you are flirting with disaster.

A newly released NCAA report shows that just 14 of the 120 Football Bowl Subdivision schools made money from campus athletics in the 2009 fiscal year, down from 25 the year before.

The gap between the haves and the have-nots appears to be growing. The largest reported amount of revenue generated by an athletics program was $138.5 million — nearly three times the median of $45.9 million. The top-spending program reported $127.6 million in annual expenses, with a similarly sized gap from the median.

Sixty-eight FBS schools reported turning a profit on football, with a median value of $8.8 million. The 52 FBS schools that lost money on football reported median losses of $2.7 million.

As public universities throughout the country struggle with double-digit tuition increases, employee furloughs, teacher layoffs and enrollment caps, scrutiny of those institutional subsidies for athletics are increasing.

Off-topic, but one of the 5 Fs – wonder how many Tsai-kos it would take to eat this much? 6? 🙄 😆

Maiava fractured left ankle out for the season.

  185. Manoa Mist August 23, 2010 7:16 pm

Appreciate the practice updates. Regarding Bright, I’d play him. The future is now. Mack will be on the hot seat if UH struggles again, so now is the time to shoot all your bullets, unload your magazine, unleash all your weapons Mack.

  186. gigi-hawaii August 23, 2010 7:20 pm

RedZone, too bad about Maiava. Maybe, it’s a good thing not to have a scrimmage. If you’re gonna get injured, might as well do it during a big game, right?

  187. gigi-hawaii August 23, 2010 7:21 pm

Again, wondering about those shoes… Why are there still ankle issues for the players who wear them?

  188. d1島 August 23, 2010 7:28 pm

    gigi,

    Maiava’s not our guy…

  196. SteveM August 23, 2010 7:46 pm

Our man in L.A. emailed me that the USC secondary starts 2 freshmen and 2 sophomores, the most with 3 games experience. He thinks we can pass on them. He thinks their offense in gonna score on us, so if we can score more than them, we can to beat ’em….

…hmmmm, that sounded more profound before I wrote it out. 😳

But interesting tidbit on their secondary.

  197. gigi-hawaii August 23, 2010 7:47 pm

I dread seeing my HECO bill, cause I’ve been running the AC night and day. It’s been so hot and humid here.

  198. gigi-hawaii August 23, 2010 7:50 pm

Dennis, when I asked hubby to predict a score for the WB, he said USC would beat UH by a large margin. I told him that if he sent Pomai that kind of score, the Tsai-kos would kill him. So best not to send anything.

  199. Ipu Man August 23, 2010 7:52 pm

    Manoa Mist,

    You are right on:

“…now is the time to shoot all your bullets, unload your magazine, unleash all your weapons Mack.” But with a name like Manoa Mist,

thought you would say something like,

…overcome them with the lovely Hawaiian scents

    of pua kenikeni and pikake…etc

  200. wafan August 23, 2010 7:53 pm

    Kill hubby?

Nah. Better to let him live. State and city need the taxes. Now that would be a lot more painful.

  201. gigi-hawaii August 23, 2010 7:57 pm

wafan, anoddah bad ting could happen: Stretch could force him to gamble one paycheck on his bid. LOL

  202. Ipu Man August 23, 2010 7:57 pm

wonder who the voters in Kalihi will blame…

  203. gigi-hawaii August 23, 2010 7:59 pm

Just like what JJ had SMU do in the Hawaii Bowl, I hope UH opens with a long, deep pass to a receiver and scores! That would be awesome.

  204. jm2375 August 23, 2010 8:07 pm

wafan – #191 – I’m glad I’m not the only one having problems, although hubby is in the other room and seems to be playing Dungeons & Dragons online without too much trouble.

  205. OldDiver August 23, 2010 8:09 pm

In a surprising defensive epic both teams are held scoreless through nearly four quarters. With five seconds left in the game and facing a fourth and seven on their own ten yard line Matt Barkley trying to make a play gets sacked in the end zone by a determined Cory Parades.

    UH 2

    USC 0

  206. gigi-hawaii August 23, 2010 8:11 pm

OldDiver, that better NOT happen!!! Grrrrr!!! We are not paying for PPV just to see that kind of lousy game!!! lol

  207. OldDiver August 23, 2010 8:13 pm

    Sorry, Paredes.

Finally got to watch the AZ-TN game & see Ryan Mouton make some tackles. Good to see him in a game, even though it’s pre-season. Hope he get more PT. Go, Ryan!

The ESPN commentators are right about Matt Leinart. I watched him in practice a couple of years ago and he’s not that focused. He has to practice like he’s supposed to play. I saw that in Warner, even when he was doing stretching.

Good idea to close practices. Focus.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

What are they? They’re just a bunch scared 18 to 22 year old young men, just like you are. Strip them bare of their team name and they are nobody. Now it’s up to you. Are you going to allow them to build a new reputation? Are you going to allow them to reap new accolades?”

    roysan16 on # 115,

I’ll gladly take the 66 points from you too (just like ‘stretch’). Are you willing to put money where your mouth is? I am. Or should you just change your moniker (again) to something more appropriate like “Waha” for instance?

  244. Ralph August 24, 2010 12:33 am

Jesse Palmer and Lou Holtz were quoted on ESPN that Hawaii should go independent, “they’ll make more money as an independent.”

  245. Ralph August 24, 2010 12:37 am

They think that if Hawaii played the BCS teams on the mainland for a large guarantee and schedule home and home games with schools on the west coast that independence would be doable. The mainland away games are “body bag” games that Garret mentioned, JD needs to be a tough negotiator so we do make a lot of money after travel expenses. We can then schedule games with the old WAC and MWC for lower home and home guarantees.

  250. Michigan Warrior August 24, 2010 3:41 am

The WAC was so concerned about our Haka (Ha’a), they forgot to take care of things that really needed attention… like THE CONFERENCE FALLING APART!!!

  251. Garret (traveling) August 24, 2010 5:39 am

Looks like JD has been talking with the Big West and the WCC is *not* an option for UH.

The WCC has made it clear it is not going to take public colleges or universities because its membership is made up only of church-based private schools. The Big West, according to a source with direct knowledge, has heard only from Hawaii and not the other remaining five WAC schools (Utah State, New Mexico State, Idaho, San Jose State or Louisiana Tech).

  252. Hank August 24, 2010 5:41 am

    ….Ohayou gozaimasu….

  253. d1島 August 24, 2010 5:43 am

    Great Morning All!

    Garret,

Expected that; kinda like the Northwest Conference in D3 athletics. They have been approached by public institutions in the past and have rebuffed them in a similar fashion.

btw, hope your trip is going well.

  254. Hank August 24, 2010 5:43 am

…i’m liking Fred’s commentary this morning…so how much is the destruction of a conference worth?

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/columnists/ferdswords/20100824_WAC_needs_to_hold_defectors_accountable_for_their_treason.html

    Hank,

    Agreed. Fire for effect…

  257. LizKauai (old iPhone) August 24, 2010 5:47 am

    Aloha full moon Kakahiaka!

  258. Garret (traveling) August 24, 2010 5:49 am

I’ve often discussed trying to figure why the Big West might want UH, instead of just thinking about things from UH’s pespective. It is important to note that adding UH to the Big West would give the Big West automatic spots in the NCAA tournament for softball, baseball and volleyball…if they value those sports, UH was in the postseason for all 3 sports and would add strength to their conference in those sports.

Providing an NCAA spot on 3 sports might be the key for UH. If that is important enough to the Big West that UH doesn’t need to provide travel subsidies to the Big West, then the economics of independence might work out.

  259. Garret (traveling) August 24, 2010 5:52 am

If UH goes independent and losing UH is the final nail that kills the WAC…would UH be included in the number of schools that the WAC would be suing?

Anyway, off to my meetings now. d1, the drive was pleasant yesterday and hopefully meetings go well today.

  260. Garret (traveling) August 24, 2010 5:55 am

Since UH is obviously talking about joining with other conferences while being a WAC member and helping the WAC decide on its course of action (including whether or not to sue teams that leave the conference), UH does need to worry about being sued if UH leaves and if the WAC starts filing lawsuits.

  261. Hank August 24, 2010 6:08 am

Garret…i would hope that UH wouldn’t gather the remaining WAC members to reinforce solidarity and then ditch them as soon as the Big West offers them a deal that can be workable without forewarning….being sensitive to their working relationship with the WAC and being honest about the needs of university is a skill that will measure Donovan/Hinshaw’s effectiveness in driving our athletic department through this difficult time.

My belief is that they’ll do a good job.

  262. Hank August 24, 2010 6:16 am

…although BYU may not get an automatic BCS bid like Notre Dame (if it finishes in the top eight)…it currently gets 1.5 million a year from the mwc in tv revenue vs a potential 10-million a year if it went independent…

…the decision comes before September 1.

    http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/cougars/50155130-88/bcs-byu-hancock-access.html.csp

  263. d1島 August 24, 2010 6:17 am

Of course we tend to focus on the situation from Hawaii’s viewpoint but Utah St. has big concerns as well. Their AD, Scott Barnes, is gonna feel lots more pressure when basketball season rolls around:

Barnes said if the WAC was to bring in other schools, like UT-San Antonio or Texas State or North Texas, it would revisit another binding agreement. Clearly, those schools need to know what they might be joining. Barnes is a new member of the NCAA tournament men’s basketball selection committee. He knows he can’t put Utah State in any situation where the men’s basketball program doesn’t have a chance to earn an automatic bid to the NCAAs.

A six-team WAC won’t lose its AQ for two years after it drops below seven teams (at the minimum 2012 and ’13) but must add a seventh team three years after (for 2014).

  264. rage777 August 24, 2010 6:29 am

    Garret,

I can see a conflict of interest if UH is looking for a way out of the WAC while still looking out for the WAC’s best interest. But, I don’t see them being held liable if the WAC starts suing everybody. The only reason why UH is looking to outside conferences is because FSU and Nevada left. If they were still in the WAC, UH wouldn’t be looking at other conferences. JD is finally looking out for UH instead of the WAC.

  265. Kekoa (iPhone) August 24, 2010 6:55 am

Good Tuesday morning all…(and that includes that rascal roysan!) What a prediction!
