New safety settles in

m18

The early reviews are in.

“I love it so far,” said Lorne Bridgeford, who moved to Hawaii the past weekend, is enrolled in a summer session, and is set to participate in next month’s Warrior training camp. “Everybody is really cool. I feel it’s a good fit.”

Bridgeford received several Division II offers but opted to walk on at UH. Bridgeford, who is 6 feet and 210 pounds, is projected to compete at strong safety. He was a free safety in Fresno City College’s 4-3 scheme last season. He will have three years to play two UH seasons.

Bridgeford was a running back and safety at Cascade High School in Everett, Wash. As a Cascade senior, he rushed for 1,654 yards and made 56 tackles. He ran 100 meters in 10.8 seconds.

He played at Wyoming as a freshman before transferring to Fresno City. He said he wanted to come to Hawaii early to “get used to the routine.” He is participating in the Warriors’ offseason conditioning program.

Don’t know if Tate Forcier is a good guy. Don’t know if he isn’t. Don’t know if he does the “Hokey Pokey” and turns himself around.

Which is surprising to read the widespread skepticism.

From what I’ve read, these are his “transgressions.”

• His family has a Web site detailing football-related accomplishments.

• He was reportedly unhappy after losing his starting job at Michigan.

• His family is too involved.

Having a Web site isn’t about ego, it’s about being outdated. With local celebrities starting their own fan-of pages on Facebook and seemingly everyone tweeting, who creates sites anymore? Oh, yeah, UH does. That’s the school’s budget-efficient vehicle for All-America campaigns.

As for being unhappy about being benched? C’mon, we’re a nation of protruding lower lips. Nobody is really that happy to be a runner-up. Even NBC had to pan away from perpetually chipper Beverly McClellan when she wasn’t named one of the final two on the Voice. Being disappointed doesn’t mean being a  bad teammate.

As for having an involved family, thought that was a positive thing. Forcier was sent to coaches to learn how to be a better player. That’s not unique. There are camps for all sports. There are clinics to make you faster and quicker. There’s a basketball clinic that is run almost every day of the year. Supportive parents are welcomed at UH. It’s not a practice unless the Satele family is watching from behind the gate. Ken Taylor encouraged his son to serve as a GA at his high school as a prelude to joining the Warriors. He even bought a condo in the university area for his son to use. Rick Taylor rarely played, and he ended up transferring. But Ken Taylor never stopped being a UH fan. Same with Brent Rausch’s parents, who attended every road game even though their son rarely played. When word broke that Forcier was going to visit UH, I called his father. He said the decision was left to his son.

Another walk-on? Hope UH get plenny room in the locker room.

    mornin’ ai-eee-soos and Mr. Tsai!

  10. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 12:33 am

This year’s team has enough for 120 players.

  11. BleedGreen808 July 9, 2011 12:33 am

    time for bed…zzzZZZZZ

  12. BleedGreen808 July 9, 2011 12:34 am

Do walk-ons get their own locker or do they share it with other walk-ons?

  13. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 12:34 am

I could never be a coach. I wouldn’t want to cut anybody.

Talked to a running back who was knocked off the roster. Nice guy. He was in the military. But because the military paid for him to take a full load, his eligibility clock triggered a while ago.

  14. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 12:35 am

    Walk-ons get their own locker.

And they get shoes, shirts (although not apparent from my photos), gloves, etc.

What they don’t get are free training-table meals.

  15. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 12:37 am

If I were a coach, I would let the redshirts stand on the sidelines during the game. Hey, if you can practice, you can get a jersey and be part of the team on game night.

  16. jm2375 July 9, 2011 12:39 am

    Howzit!!

Was playing over on “yesterday”‘s post. 👿

    Nytal!

  17. BleedGreen808 July 9, 2011 12:40 am

Good to know walk-ons are not singled out.

  18. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 12:41 am

    (Carryover from previous blog):

Bubba decided to go home for the summer. Can’t say I blame him. He stayed here from July 2010 through early June without getting to go home. That’s a long time for a freshman.

  19. BleedGreen808 July 9, 2011 12:41 am

    #15

Isn’t that a NCAA or WAC rules for home games?

  20. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 12:42 am

Remind me not to use the word “yesterday” or “tomorrow.” New style requires us to use the day of the week.

However, we did not kiss “today” goodbye. That’s still an approved word.

  21. BleedGreen808 July 9, 2011 12:42 am

    ST–

Who of the incoming recruits (walk-ons or not) are you most impressed with thus far?

  22. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 12:43 am

    Bleed:

I think it was a UH policy because the field was so crowded with boosters.

  23. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 12:44 am

I think Brenden Daley and Brandon Leslie are going to be very good.

Woodard said he is adjusting. He should be OK when training camp rolls around.

I think Amadi and Trevor Davis are going to be productive.

  24. BleedGreen808 July 9, 2011 12:45 am

I agree…they put just as much effort in practice as those who are on the field. They need to be part of the team and excitement.

  25. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 12:46 am

I know Mack said Anguay is going to undergo surgery. But he’s able to limp-jog, and he’s out there doing exercises with the other players.

  26. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 12:47 am

I can understand why boosters were allowed on the field. UH needed to give donors something in return. But it was getting out of hand having so many non-players on the sideline.

  27. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 12:49 am

I just checked the stats. There are 52,610 comments pending.

    That’s a lot of spam.

  28. BleedGreen808 July 9, 2011 12:49 am

I hope he’s not trying to aggravate the situation by proving to his teammates his tough. That would be foolish

  29. BleedGreen808 July 9, 2011 12:51 am

What time are the unsupervised workouts? Am just itching for football to come.

  30. BleedGreen808 July 9, 2011 12:52 am

Why can’t they put the boosters on the opposing side

  31. Ralph July 9, 2011 12:53 am

who initiated letting the boosters on the field? If I remember correctly, it was Glanville who suggested to JJ that the sidelines was too crowded, someone had to go, so who was it that kept the boosters on the field and the walk ons and red shirts moving to the stands?

  32. BleedGreen808 July 9, 2011 12:54 am

Someone asked this earlier…is Thor Salanoa enrolled or planning on enrolling this upcoming school year.

  33. BleedGreen808 July 9, 2011 12:55 am

Morning, Ralph! Long time no see and talk

  34. BleedGreen808 July 9, 2011 12:56 am

    Probably Na Koa

  35. Ralph July 9, 2011 12:57 am

The Russians and Chinese are looking for you!

  36. BleedGreen808 July 9, 2011 12:59 am

    Ralph–

lol…you didn’t tell them where I was or did you???

  37. Ralph July 9, 2011 1:11 am

how could I, if the Russians and Chinese can’t locate you, there is no way I can figure out if you’re in the Middle East, eastern Russia or running the Sea of China.

  38. ai-eee-soos July 9, 2011 1:17 am

just finished wading through friday’s posts.

DL and OL look like they’re in fine shape already.

    Promise looks promising, and sculpted.

  39. BleedGreen808 July 9, 2011 1:23 am

    Ralph–

They’re hot on my trail…I thought you might have told them where to find me. lol.

    Time for bed…

  40. al July 9, 2011 1:30 am

wow…a lot goes on after a nap.

it seems like we are getting some real quality looking walk ons aren’t we?

  41. al July 9, 2011 1:33 am

yup, too bad the pundits and naysayers are so abundant. these guys just have nothing better to do then try to downplay and put down 20 year old kids.

what joy does that bring them?

i always say i feel sorry for them. poor things that their mommy must have dropped them on their heads as infants.

  42. al July 9, 2011 1:35 am

meanwhile…st, i get the subliminal message. i am with you on this guy.

robert patrick “tate” forcier…come on down!

  43. gigi-hawaii July 9, 2011 1:43 am

I guess you guys never cooked salmon the way I cook it.

It’s not meant to be crispy, so skin is not necessary.

Besides, I like the pink color. Skin would hide the pink color of the salmon.

The wild salmon at Costco tends to still have skin on the bottom. I tried it. Not good. The skin prevented the teri sauce from soaking into the bottom of the salmon. Not much taste.

    So, don’t buy wild salmon.

Buy ATLANTIC SALMON from Costco. Da Bestest.

It is skinless and plump. Can’t get any better than that.

  44. gigi-hawaii July 9, 2011 1:47 am

Refresher course in cooking gigi’s salmon:

Spray bottom of pan with oil.

    Place salmon in pan.

Pour low sodium Kikkoman Teriyaki Sauce on top and bottom.

    Sprinkle with green onions.

Bake COVERED for 16 minutes in 375 degree oven.

    DELICIOUS!!! SO MOIST AND TASTY.

AND COLORFUL, TOO, WITH THE GREEN ONIONS ON TOP OF PINK SALMON.

  45. al July 9, 2011 1:48 am

    tate accomplishments…

“…play for Scripps Ranch High School, where he completed 529-of-760 passes (69.6 pct.) for 7,448 yards and 61 touchdowns in his career.[7] ”

“The Oklahoman described him as “a San Diego quarterback who holds [scholarship] offers from just about everyone”.[14″

“After a junior season with a 77% pass completion rate,[2] Rivals.com ranked him as the most accurate passer in the nation,[”

forcier is listed at 6’0″/185 lbs. he ran a 4.58 his senior year in hs.

  46. gigi-hawaii July 9, 2011 1:49 am

Yes, ST, salmon fishing is sports related so not off-topic. lol

  47. al July 9, 2011 1:53 am

    salmon.

the farm raised salmon has an almost white color to it. to make it eye appealing they inject a dye that ends up on the market/costco as you see it. this is the kind you see at costco, sam’s, etc.

only the wild salmon has its true color. it is advertised as such “wild”.

there are too many types of salmon to repeat here. our salmon expert/whitey is on an extended excursion. he could tell you more.

i personally like the steelhead trout/salmon from costco that is frozen. its texture and taste is bar none in my palate’s test.

  48. gigi-hawaii July 9, 2011 1:56 am

I wouldn’t mind wild salmon if it was skinless.

Just too much trouble to remove it from the fish.

But it supposed to be better for you.

  49. gigi-hawaii July 9, 2011 1:57 am

Anyway, how do you know that ATLANTIC salmon is farm raised?

  50. ai-eee-soos July 9, 2011 2:03 am

ST’s update on Dustin Adam’s and family.

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/20110709_warriors_recruit_loses_home.html

  51. al July 9, 2011 2:04 am

    read the label.

if it is wild salmon they will advertise as such on the label and the price will be nearly $4 more per pound.

most places have to also indicate if it is “farm raised salmon”.

the majority of the atlantic salmon sold in most stores/markets/costco/sams is the farm raised variety.

when in doubt ask the store clerks.

  52. gigi-hawaii July 9, 2011 2:06 am

ah,well, haha. I am not dead yet.

LOVE Atlantic salmon with teri sauce.

    yum.

  53. gigi-hawaii July 9, 2011 2:09 am

    ST,

    excellent article about Adams.

    Very touching.

  54. al July 9, 2011 2:09 am

if you have to remove the skin you need a sharp long bladed knife.

    no sharp…no attempt.

best way…cut along the edge of the length of the salmon on both flanks. do not cut through the skin, just lightly enough.

then, cut the tail end of the filet with your blade at a 5 degree angle. again do not cut through the skin, but, rather cut to the skin.

then grab the tail end and run your sharp blade all the way to the top end. once you get good at this you can do this in seconds.

or buy your atlantic salmon from sams club they sell it skinless.

  55. gigi-hawaii July 9, 2011 2:13 am

huh? the Atlantic salmon at Costco is skinless too.

It’s frozen, too, so can take individually wrapped filets out of the bag as needed.

  56. al July 9, 2011 2:20 am

oh, i was referring to the chilled salmon at sams or costco. one is skinless and the other is not.

the frozen costco salmon is farm raised if i am not mistaken.

  57. al July 9, 2011 2:24 am

intriguing scenario today on the online version of the s/a sports page.

    on the left of the page is ferd’s column’s headlines;

UH should think twice about using the ‘Force’

and to the very right is the reardon column headlines:

Forcier deserves a shot, same as Colt got

what was the sports editor thinking?

  58. gigi-hawaii July 9, 2011 2:29 am

    I agree with Reardon.

    Forcier deserves a 2nd chance.

Besides, he’s never been incarcerated or otherwise in legal trouble.

  59. al July 9, 2011 2:35 am

i believe the majority believe that forcier deserves a shot.

  60. al July 9, 2011 2:43 am

the roulette game by student/athletes happens all the time. just because a family happens to have not one but three sons who are gifted enough to even be considered let alone having had competed at this level is amazing.

they/he shouldn’t be made a mockery of sorts just because.

i don’t agree with ferd this time for adding to the negative press this young man has been up against all this time.

  61. al July 9, 2011 2:43 am

having a website to promote one’s self is making the most of what is available out there for anyone. it is no different then the youtube.com videos every potential recruit does to self and promote themselves. having the website is really genius.

i am sure if many others did the promotion to the hilt they’d have more opportunities.

  62. al July 9, 2011 2:44 am

    nap time.

  63. gigi-hawaii July 9, 2011 2:49 am

I wonder why Michigan replaced Forcier with a supposedly faster QB in his sophomore year.

Was Forcier a disappointment on the field?

Well, being groomed to be a starter since the 3rd grade and then being home schooled also for that reason had to be extreme pressure on such a young guy.

Reminds me of Timmy Chang, who started in his freshman year.

I really think kids need to grow up first before taking on monumental challenges.

  64. gigi-hawaii July 9, 2011 2:52 am

I am impressed that Tate’s brother transferred and graduated from Stanford.

  65. A-joe July 9, 2011 3:53 am

I don’t mind Forcier having a crack at second chance like Colt. As long as he’s not another Tyler Graunke.

  66. Garret July 9, 2011 4:00 am

    ST,

I completely understand the subliminal messages that have been going on for a long time with Forcier and understand why you wish to put the best spin on everything to support the decision. However, to be fair and complete we *have* to list at least 2 more things or we are just burying our heads in the sand:

    1. Forcier did not decide to transfer from Michigan until after he was put on Academic probation. He apparently doesn’t have his Academics in order right now to transfer for UH, which is why you mentioned he was taking an online class (I’m guessing to boost his GPA to a level that UH or another school would be okay with to admit him).

    2. A woman had to call the police when Forcier locked himself in her bedroom on April 22 and it appeared that he was going to jump out her window to commit suicide. There is a police report on this so it is not just a rumor that this happened.

Even given those things, if I were the Warrior coaches and Forcier gets a thumbs up from the players that host him then I would invite him to walk on. If he earns the starting job, he should be awarded a scholarship–whether that be in the spring or next fall or the year after.

  67. Garret July 9, 2011 4:02 am

    Al,

Having a website is a *good* thing for all recruits, promo isn’t bad. Posting all of the recruiting letters was a first though–I haven’t read of any recruit besides Tate who put all of his recruiting letters online.

  68. Garret July 9, 2011 4:06 am

Player from Maui gets an invitation to walk on to Arkansas. He apparently wanted to go to UH until his recruiting trip to UH in February.

Loewen said he wanted to go to the University of Hawaii until his recruiting trip in February. When he arrived in Manoa he was the only Neighbor Island recruit there, he said, and one of only two from Hawaii.

“My tape was as good or better than anybody there, so it was kind of like a slap in the face when they said I had to walk on,” he said. “The California guys, I saw their tapes and they didn’t look that good to me at all. Even the California kids were surprised when I didn’t get an offer from them.

“I think the UH coaches ignore the Hawaii guys, especially the Neighbor Island guys. We are right in their backyard and they are just ignoring a lot of talent.”

    http://www.mauinews.com/page/content.detail/id/551223/Loewen-gets-invitation–to-walk-on-at-Arkansas.html?nav=11

  69. Garret July 9, 2011 4:09 am

DE transferring from U-Dub apparently considered UH before choosing Colorado State.

Williams, who was released from his letter of intent by Washington after choosing not to come in as a grayshirt, said he also was looking at Kansas State, Hawaii, Southern California and Arizona State before choosing CSU. He signed with Washington in February of 2010 and comes to CSU as a true freshman, with four years of eligibility to complete over the next five years.

    http://www.coloradoan.com/article/20110709/SPORTS/107090346

  70. Garret July 9, 2011 4:12 am

From what I’ve read, Nevada isn’t interested in Forcier (and they just got a former Wyoming QB to transfer) so if UH passes then I think Forcier has to go to SJSU. However, I think ST has been making it clear that UH isn’t going to pass unless the visit doesn’t go well…

  71. Garret July 9, 2011 4:14 am

The 49ers are moving their training camp to Nevada’s campus this year…Kaepernick will be right at home.

  72. Garret July 9, 2011 4:17 am

    d1shima,

I’m sorry I missed your post last night. UT-Arlington gets very little of the mineral rights–they are part of the UT system but way, way down on the pecking order. At least in engineering, UT-Dallas gets much more praise and gets for choice when UT-Austin profs want to collaborate.

  73. Garret July 9, 2011 4:23 am

    HawaiiMongoose,

I see all the potential positives for UT-Arlington that you mentioned, but there is a reason that their Athletic Budget is $8.5 million and why their students voted down a proposed Athletic Fee increase.

And why their men’s basketball attendance was actually less than 800 per game and moving to a new arena isn’t suddenly going to get their students to have school spirit.

And why their 2005 study found that they didn’t have enough money to start a football program, even at the FCS level.

Keep in mind that the Texas state budget is getting severe cuts right now…UT-Austin have their lobbyists working hard in Austin (nice to have the state capital there) but the cuts to the UT system will be distributed to UTSA and UT-Arlington.

  74. Ralph July 9, 2011 4:26 am

Maybe in Loewen’s case it wasn’t about his talent level that kept UH from offering him a scholarship, his statement alone in the Maui News tells me he has a lot of growing up (attitude) to do.

Anyone throwing possible teammates under the bus by saying that he saw their tapes and they didn’t look good at all says a lot about his character.

any ways, since he is from brother Whitey’s neighborhood, I wish him well and I hope Arkansas is a fit for him.

  75. Garret July 9, 2011 4:30 am

I did some research and one positive thing for UT-Arlington is that the students didn’t reject a student fee–their students passed a resolution that if their school adds sports (football, women’s soccer and women’s golf–they will need a lot more women’s sports for Title IX I am guessing) then they will allow student fees to be increased.

  76. Pomai July 9, 2011 4:31 am

#22 – ST – That’s a big problem, are the boosters in it for the right reasons? It would seem to me that if anyone has a right to be on the sideline it’s the team which the red, white, green, yellow or blue shirts are a part of. As we like to tell all the softball boosters “It’s all about the girls”

  77. Ralph July 9, 2011 4:34 am

I guess Arlington is the UT step child, left out and nearly forgotten. I figured Texas being a proud lot would be supportive of all of its branches since Austin can’t take every Texan that wants to go to UT-Austin. The branches are called the University of Texas at ……., a matter of state pride to stay home and be part of the system.

  78. Ralph July 9, 2011 4:36 am

Garret remind Momo that the Tsaikos are having a practice tailgate on August 6, Saturday, at Cabana A from 10 a.m.

  79. Garret July 9, 2011 4:39 am

    Ralph,

Arlington isn’t even #2 or #3 on the UT system…think them at the long-forgotten stepchild or a 16th cousin. There are SO MANY UT schools they cannot support them all equally.

    UT-Austin

    UTEP

    UTSA

    UT-Dallas

and then you have other locations: Arlington, Tyler, Brownsville, Permian Basin, Pan American

  80. Garret July 9, 2011 4:40 am

    Ralph,

I’ll let him and Mrs. Momo know.

  81. Garret July 9, 2011 4:42 am

wow, you are prolific this morning, Garret!

    Interesting tidbits.

  83. Garret July 9, 2011 4:48 am

    gigi,

I have houseguests coming at lunchtime (bringing a ton of food from Ono Ono!) and then my wife’s best friend is staying with us for 5 nights starting tomorrow…so, my blog time will go away after this morning.

My kids just woke up so I’ll go now…

  84. mctruck July 9, 2011 5:33 am

I believe Forcier should get a chance to meet the coaches and have them eveluate whether he’ll fit in with UH.

I also read Ferd’s article this morning and a couple things stood out which I never thought off as well; Ferd’s article states that Forcier was home schooled. I have met a couple of families who have “home-schooled” their children out here in Texas, and their children seem to lack social skills,(public interaction), sorta reserved within themselves. So, that makes me wonder? Secondly…..the article says that Forcier had, “private qb-coaching” since the third grade?…..so I’m wondering, taught the mechanics of throwing, etc. Wonder about the mental/emotional(character)factors?

Too early – but I’m up – GOOD MORNING GOOD PEOPLE!

GIGI – There are farms in Chile that raise Atlantic Salmon.

    Chile is in the Pacific

But it is true – in fact Smithsonian had an article about it in the last two years or so. The fear is that should the fish escape, they would breed with the Pacific salmon and louse up the gene pool i.e. ending the pure bred Atlantic salmon and the Pacific salmon and come up with some sort of hybrid – and that some of these hybrids would eventually get back to the Atlantic and interbreed there.

Got me whether Costco has the “pure” Atlantic salmon or whether they get their Atlantic salmon from Chile

Feature on Scott Harding in tomorrow’s Sunday Mail newspaper…I think that Australian reporters need some work on American football terminology:

Hawaii is the college where former rugby union and league player Colin Scotts learned his trade before becoming the only Australian to play an outfield position in the NFL.

    Tommui,

I got sick eating orange roughey (from New Zealand) at Aaron’s, a now-defunct fine dining restaurant in Ala Moana.

For that reason, I generally avoid ordering fish at restaurants.

But, I have never gotten sick eating Atlantic Salmon from Costco!!!

“My tape was as good or better than anybody there, so it was kind of like a slap in the face when they said I had to walk on,” he said. “The California guys, I saw their tapes and they didn’t look that good to me at all. Even the California kids were surprised when I didn’t get an offer from them.”

Hmmm…..may be true, but do you want to bad mouth other recruits like that? What happens down the road with such an attitude? “The coaches chose to start this guy over me when I’m the better player.” Sounds like a former UH running back who quit the team back in the 90s after he was benched by the coaching staff for making similar comments.

    Just my 2 cents.

  91. MauiBoyinLouisville July 9, 2011 6:29 am

    ST, three questions for you:

Is David Katina on the team?

Also why does UH continue to give scholies to kids who never fulfill academic requirements?

Lastly, all these local boys that are playing junior college now (hill, maafala, alofipa, quines, lopati), does UH continue to stay in contact with them about resigning? shame to see all these local boys not come home.

Something must be up with this kid. Former Baldwin Coach’s Chad Kauhaahaa and Jimmy Morimoto was recruiting this kid for Utah and UNLV and both didn’t offer Loewen a scholie, so that a red flag to me on this kid. I know Rich Miano was on Maui during spring and offered Baldwin’s 6’4 DE Pasoni Tasini a scholie to UH. Utah has also offered a scholie. Tasini was just named the MIL Athlete of the year. 1st team All-Star in Football,

1st team All-Star in Basketball, Shot Put and Discus Champion on Maui and played middle blocker for boys

MIL Champion Volleyball team, doing this during track season. At the Maui Combine he ran a 4.79 40 and had

a vertical of 32.5 inches. He benched 225 13 times. I know Oregon State and Washington has been sniffing

    on this kid.

Just a little bit more clarification on Tate Forcier: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tate_Forcier).

  97. warriorsun July 9, 2011 7:19 am

i thought ferd lewis and dave reardon did credible jobs of representing different perspectives of tate forcier. both reads were helpful in understanding the swirl surrounding the former michigan QB.

if you buy into ferd’s message, you may as well burn into effigy joseph kennedy for grooming his sons to be us presidents. that ambition got two of his sons shot. afterall, the senior kennedy under-achieved and only managed an ambassador assignment. not to mention tiger woods and michele wie’s parents. the elder woods subjected his son to counter insurgency training including crawling in ditches at night to play in the dark on the 5th hole and putting in the rain while screaming when his 5 year son tied-off. we all know about michele so i can spare folks the gory details that stunted her growth in maturity.

if you follow dave’s utopia, all tate needs is OP swimware, hawaiian sun and a course in yoga at manoa.

    really?

i hardly call attempted suicide and academic failure minor. all in forcier’s first year away from home.

perhaps, there is more involved here to be rehabed than hawaii’s sand surf can cure.

good thing mac is handling this situation. granted coach has not had a good record with irish lepricons, especially gay ones, but he does have a handle on managing wayward QBs. ask tyler or bryant. they both were suspended during the spring. seems like mac was delivering a message to shape up or ship out. gramps can be tough, but he is fair. maybe this is the type of old fashioned coaching culture, tate will respond to–in either of ferd’s or dave’s world.

UH recruits who don’t meet the academic requirements initially aren’t guaranteed scholarships.

Earvin Sione did not make it the first year. He took classes to get eligible. After that, he had to walk on.

    Same thing with Kainoa LaCount.

UH won’t boot a player who doesn’t play. But one of the grayshirts lost his scholarship because he missed too many classes and meetings.

  105. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 7:37 am

Seems to me like the Maui guy got the same offer from Arkansas that he received from UH.

Also Arkansas gave scholarships to three California recruits.

Does Arkansas give better treatment to California guys than to neighbor island players?

  106. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 7:45 am

For debate’s sake, if it is argued that being home-school would hurt social skills, could the same be argued about all-boy or all-girl schools?

If it is argued that being in a one-gender school increases focus, then I imagine being home-schooled would increase the focus.

  107. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 7:49 am

And while there is evidence Forcier did not do well academically, he must be doing something right socially. His girlfriend is Miss Michigan.

I think the problem with premium-seat fees is a supply-and-demand issue.

UH football games aren’t sold out. There are no waiting lists.

So how do you get people to pay a lot? You have to offer them something as a reward, and polo shirts just won’t do.

  110. warriorsun July 9, 2011 7:58 am

uh has overlooked out-island players in the past that have succeeded at high college levels.

true. brian cabral will testify to that. UH has also recruited kids that have done well at manoa before most colleges realized they played football anywhere else but on oahu. dont we hold clinics on maui and big island. held spring exhibitions on maui and hawaii. seems like we are taking the ballers on the outer islands seriousily. offering recruits walk-on staus is not confined to the neighboring islands. it occurs en masse on oahu and we are seeing a slew of walk-ons matriculating to manoa from the continent.

for those that are not offered schollies, it can be demoralizing. where ever you are from.

suck it up and prove you are deserving. the best at UH have done likewise.

One gender schools increases something alright.

I’ve never been subjected to that kind of environment, but I imagine I’d have a lot of … tension built up. 😆 😆 😆

  113. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 8:10 am

I read an article that one of the big things now is online elementary schools, which is the equivalent of home-schooling.

One of the guys running it is Michael Milken, the guy who once served time for insider trading.

  114. Kevin July 9, 2011 8:10 am

Home-schooling, in my opinion and experience based on people I interacted with that were home-schooled and then “released” into the “wild” (i.e. college age) can be damaging.

Parents of this person were overly “conservative” and a lot of false information and one-sided opinion led to some constricting views of other people. Almost like those LAUGHABLE 1950’s style educational videos on sexual education. 😆 😆 😆

So being constricted all your young life and at the age of 18 being allowed to interact with the REAL LIFE variety of the REAL WORLD filled with people of many different backgrounds, social lives, religious beliefs, etc… it can be a lot to take in leading to social disfunctions. It’s a HUGE wake up call that what you thought was the “spoken word” is no longer the concrete truth in the REAL WORLD.

This was ONE case. I cannot speak for the rest of home-schooled individuals but this tends to be the stereo-type.

At least with segregated schools of gender like all-boys or all-girl schools, they are not as confined to what I feel are dangerous social biases based on ignorance which tends to be the case in home-schooling, again BASED on what I experienced from someone I knew closely a while ago.

  115. Kevin July 9, 2011 8:12 am

    ST,

    I don’t agree with home-schooling period.

Kids MUST interact with other kids on a daily basis. Now, if home-schooled kids are somehow able to do so through youth-sports or boy scout/girl scout type things, then it should be fine, but most of the home-schooled cases I heard are the typical sad story of kids being locked out from society.

  119. Old School Dave July 9, 2011 8:21 am

Fmr HC Bob Wagner made the comment years ago that no other school recruits the state of Hawaii more than UH. They would offer more local kids scholarships than any other school from the mainland. Problem is that when schools like UW or Colorado come here and sign 2-3 players, those schools are looked upon as heroes. Recruiting is not an exact science and players will be overlooked or not offered. Still, UH has improved in their relationships with the local high school coaches under Coach Mac, almost night a day in comparison with June Jones, who wasn’t very proactive, IMHO.

  120. Pomai July 9, 2011 8:22 am

Tate Forcier- MHO, I don’t know the young man, don’t know his family. All I know about him is what other peoples opinions are of him, so I take it with a grain of salt. If the coachs/team are ok with him and he is ok with the coaches/team then I welcome him with open arms and a open mind. I will wish him well.

  125. Kevin July 9, 2011 8:25 am

    Old School Dave,

YES. Let’s talk about TODAY. Under Coach Mack, the program has made a HUGE improvements on not just local recruiting, but recruit efforts all across the board.

I think most of us can agree this was evident in 2008 and gradually really came to full light and more obvious.

  126. Pomai July 9, 2011 8:28 am

#109 ST – Granted it is a selling point, but at what expense? It just seems to me that if you are trying to instill the feeling and ideology of “Team” then you need to go all the way and one part of that IMHO would to be to have all the players on the sideline with the “Team” during the game.

  127. warriorsun July 9, 2011 8:32 am

home-schooled kids do well in college. i personally know 3-CURRENT professional athletes from hawaii who were home schooled for the majority of their pre-college life and were solid kids. wont mention names, but you would be surprised. home schooling doesnt mean isolation. where did that assumption come from? home schooled kids socialize, participate in community sports and activities involving their peers. I coached dozens on the eastside.

a friend home-schooled hiis/her entire litter on an outer island and each received academic scholies and one went to MIT and received a masters. do some research.

  128. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 8:33 am

    Pomai:

I agree. For some, suiting up is going to be their UH experience. If you practice, you should be able to be on the sideline. Especially if you get to wear those new jerseys.

  129. CoolEthan July 9, 2011 8:35 am

Cheers to Tate Forcier and wishing him this venture is sucessful.

It’s all about the student athletes will, determination and discipline , along with coaches decisions trumping over what the opinions of the fans believe, or speculate.

  130. Old School Dave July 9, 2011 8:39 am

Stephen, didn’t Nebraska get into some trouble a while back for suiting up redshirt players for a bowl game? I think it was when the camera caught a shot of Cal transfer Vincer Ferragamo on the sidelines at a bowl game in what was his redshirt year. He wasn’t supposed to suit up for any games. Again, this was back in the 70s and things may have changed.

Speaking of Nebraska, they used to suit upwards of 150 players for games due to their extensive walk-on program, until some genius in an office cubical at the NCAA decided to put a limit on roster numbers.

Things would be different if somebody other than Austin won the No. 2 job.

Graves and Shutter have made improvements in a complicated offense. Where they will be in six months will be further ahead from where they are now.

Spain is coming off shoulder surgery, and a QB recruit still hasn’t met the NCAA requirement.

    Situations lead to certain actions.

Becuase Hawaii has only 1 D1 school, it would be hard to give all the deserving athletes a chance for a position on the team. Compared to most other states that have two or more D1 schools which allows more-in-state students to stay at home. To me that is why it looks like more studentsw are going out of state to play ball. It’s all perception. Back to lurking.

If Tate Forcier finds his way to UH-Manoa, I’ll welcome him with open arms. I hope there are some assurances on his part that he won’t be a cancerous disgruntled player if he finds he can’t unseat David Graves as the starter or even move up on the QB depth chart as there will be guys there who will have been in the system longer and will know the Offense much better than him. If he can be a supportive teammate and not show any of those prima donna / diva tendencies which could ruin the chemistry and cohesiveness of this team, I think most will accept and welcome him. If not…

California A’s are 4-3 victors over the Renegades in the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championships in Surrey, B.C.

Ricketts started for the A’s, in 5 innings she gave up 3 runs, 3 ER, 4 BB and struck out 7. She did not get the win. California had to rally and scored 4 runs in the last inning to pull out the win.

Team Australia defeated Venezuela 9-5. Claire Warwick batted 2 for 3 with 2 rbi and Stacy Porter finished with 1 for 3 with an rbi. Smethurst was the closer, pitched one inning.

    ANNOUNCEMENT

    August 6, 2011, 10 am to ???

Practice T-gate at Cabana A (nearest to the restaurant)

Yes, there are many things going on during the summer. However, this is an opportunity to see folks who are near and dear. I hope the kids will be there too. Although it’s too bad we couldn’t get the upper sites (being remodeled), we can still use the fields to toss the football and softball around…horseshoes too. Would love to have ST tell us 1st hand what he’s seeing at the voluntary practices. And there’s always a chance for a surprise! If can, please let SteveM know how many in your party (no need names) just so we have a count.

Is Tate the highest profile QB Hawaii has ever recruited?

  182. chopsueyboy July 9, 2011 1:58 pm

    RedZone

Our shakes and smoothies can be blended with soy milk

instead of ice cream or non-fat frozen yogurt.

    Does that help?

  183. Iwonderwhytheyhateme July 9, 2011 2:03 pm

Tate is quick and mobile. Yes we are a pass heavy offense but he give our offense another dimension and keep the defense guessing.

  184. Iwonderwhytheyhateme July 9, 2011 2:12 pm

Watching Jon Gruden on ESPN. Why isn’t this guy back coaching yet?

  185. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 2:13 pm

It’s never a good idea to be motivated by revenge or hatred.

If the Maui guy feels that Arkansas is the best fit for him — academically, athletically, socially — then he should go there.

But if he’s going there just to show UH what it missed, well, that doesn’t prove much.

  186. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 2:17 pm

The UH athletic department has an accumulated deficit of $10 million.

Its coaches are asked to take a “voluntary” pay cut.

Its biggest fund-raiser this year will be a telethon.

UH isn’t Stanford or Washington or Colorado.

If a high-profile QB is interested, it’s worth a look.

  187. Iwonderwhytheyhateme July 9, 2011 2:21 pm

Gruden doesn’t like bubble screens apparently and says that all these QB’s have inflated statistics because of the bubble. Lol.

  188. Iwonderwhytheyhateme July 9, 2011 2:26 pm

Does anyone have a number on how much upper campus makes from selling sports merchandise?

  189. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 2:28 pm

Bubble screens are difficult passes. The receiver is moving away from the QB, in a diagonal pattern.

That said, Colt Brennan was perfect on his bubble screen passes in 2006.

  190. Slugger July 9, 2011 2:32 pm

    tom-warriornation,

Would like to get together with you if you are available for a CC. My sis lives in SJ & I’ve sent her the info about tickets.

  191. Iwonderwhytheyhateme July 9, 2011 2:36 pm

    #189,

It’s used a lot in college according to Gruden. Don’t know why he doesn’t like them. But he did say that he would go insane if his team’s defense would allow a bubble to be successful.

I remember it working quite well for us.

  192. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 2:39 pm

Not sure if it’s changed, but the athletic department used to receive 40 percent of 8 percent of the wholesale value. If a shirt was worth $10 wholesale, the AD’s cut would be 32 cents, even if the shirt sold for $25.

  193. Stephen Tsai July 9, 2011 2:40 pm

Bubble screens and shovel passes are counters to aggressive pass rushes.

  194. gigi-hawaii July 9, 2011 2:42 pm

  195. Kevin July 9, 2011 2:46 pm

    IWWTHM,

All we know for sure is that UPPER campus makes more from LOWER campus off UH athletic merchandise sold at Rainbowtique locations.

UH athletics gets their merchandise $$$$ from licensing fees of UH athletic logo apparel, about a reported approximate figure just under 2 million dollars annually.

  196. Kevin July 9, 2011 2:49 pm

Just saying, I suggested a telethon back in 2008 on this blog and other message boards. Wasn’t a telethon for just UH football but for the entire department.

People thought I was being overly dramatic and some said it would seem “too desperate”.

  197. Kevin July 9, 2011 2:50 pm

    What happened to bubble drinks?

    Ono.

  199. Ralph July 9, 2011 2:58 pm

And we don’t have the trademark rights to the “H”, therefore we lose on its royalty. JJ wanted UH to set up and take ownership of the “H” but someone dropped the ball.

The graphics artist, Ozaki, must own the trademark rights to the “H”

    UHAD $10 million deficit:

Auxillary Dept should allot all parking $$ received on days/nights of athletic events to offset the deficit.

Rainbowtique should change its profit sharing fees so UHAD receives more, a lot more than the $.32 off every merchnadise with a wholesale value of $10.

IF above agreements were to give “upper campus” more $$$, then a larger % of profits should be alloted to reducing the $10 million deficit.

Somebody is keeping a strangle hold over UHAD!

  218. Ralph July 9, 2011 4:51 pm

The parking fees are being used to pay for its construction, the question is, how long a period of time is the debt amortized, and how much is left in retiring the debt.

  219. tommui July 9, 2011 5:00 pm

CHOPSUEYBOY #214 – O-Bok is terrific and we like it too. But the fast food Korean joint selling bubble-tea that I was thinking of is just two or three doors away from Bank of the Orient – this is on the Safeway side of the marketplace and across the parking lot from McDonald’s.

  220. tommui July 9, 2011 5:02 pm

With all the nakedness going on in the various messages, maybe we should have a money-making calendar featuring Koa-mohu?

  221. tommui July 9, 2011 5:08 pm

There is a poster which I had kept in my office with Charlie Brown on the mound and all the characters around him pointing and talking etc. The caption was something “there are always people around willing to give advice”

I assume that it was positioning in the field, what pitch to throw etc.

I let Coach Mac and his staff and the team to worry about recruiting etc.

I suppose I could tell him about the quick kick but … nah.

  222. BigWave96744 July 9, 2011 5:33 pm

Digging up and posting every negative remarks, that a failed UH recruit (or family member)makes, does nothing for the athlete and UH program. Every year we will win some and lose some. I guarantee that there always be a local recruit that will shine than UH didn’t offer, then again there will always be a Chad Owens, Corey Paredes, Richard Torres, etc that no on wanted, and proved the pundits wrong…

  223. Kevin July 9, 2011 5:34 pm

To say that UH athletics doesn’t make a single cent of profit from the use of the tapa H doesn’t make sense.

I only have basic knowledge about trademark laws, probably less.

UH doesn’t have rights to the H logo??????????

UH has registered the tapa H as their (OUR) official athletic logo. PERIOD. UH can go after those adopting it for their own use for profit or if it is used in ways they deem inappropriate that will infringe on it’s official and legal use as the registered offical logo of UH athletics.

My next question is, if the University of Hawaii DOESNT “OWN” the tapa H how can they legally license the use of their logo to vendors. Does Ozaki get a cut of the licensing fees?????

Again, UH athletics makes over a million and a half dollars a year in licensing fees for the tapa H and the tapa font used in the word “HAWAII” and all that.

The deal cannot be in such a way that a shirt that has the tapa H logo AND the word “HAWAII” (TWO ITEMS) and UH only gets a cut of licensing for the “HAWAII” font and nothing from the “H” logo?????????????

Can licensing fees be seperated when an item with two logos on them belong to two different entities???????? 😆 😆 😆

Now if this is another game of semantics, which law tends to be, then screw it, but UH does make $ off the tapa H logo. Again, how you going sell licensing fees on something you dont “own”??????

  224. Lava July 9, 2011 5:36 pm

I am convinced adding TF makes a lot of sense and could pay huge dividends.

  225. Kevin July 9, 2011 5:40 pm

I know there was a Star Advertiser article on this not too long ago but I cannot find it, but I did just find this:

    http://mauinow.com/2010/05/21/popularity-of-uh-logo-sparks-concerns/

Fred Guzman wrote this in 2010:

Imitation, we are told, is the most sincere form of flattery. If that’s the case, the University of Hawaii has plenty to be flattered about.

It turns out that UH’s distinctive green, silver and black kapa “H” logo has become popular with several prep teams around the country. The problem is that those schools are using the logo without authorization.

Most notable among them is Hightower High School, a Texas football power based near Houston. The Hightower Hurricanes’ school colors are green, silver and black, so the UH logo worked perfectly.

The issue came tlo light, according to the Honolulu Advertiser, when a UH fan on the mainland e-mailed photos of the Hurricanes’ uniforms to the university noting the striking resemblance.

But Hightower is not alone. Hillcrest High in Utah and Hoxie High in Arkansas also have adopted the UH logo without permission or providing UH with any sort of remuneration for its use.

The kapa “H” has been the university’s sports logo for more than a decade and has been formally registered as trademark, which means using the “H” must be approved by the school’s licensing office.

My hopes is UH works out some sort of an agreement by which the respective high schools recognize the university’s legal ownership of the logo and pay UH a nominal licensing fee.

So is Fred Guzman incorrect when he says what I bolded in BLACK?

    #222 –

Yup. Especially the part about “does nothing for the athlete and UH program”. Some of these nega-vibers need to let the process work and not ruin Forcier’s notions about Hawaii before he even gets here.

  232. POOH in SIGH July 9, 2011 6:28 pm

No more lurking, no more silence, “The Ferd” as some have tabbed him, has really gotten under my skin.

    Are you kidding me?!?!

So we’re gonna stick to a kid like that huh? I mean, be honest, what does Ferd, any of us know for that matter, what this kid is all about first hand. Seems only person at the paper to have talked to Forcier is Tsai. Ferd, well, I think not.

So the kid has the full support of his entire family. My gosh, what a crime.

So the kid’s got game, shame on him.

So the kid transferred, well then, he must be a bad kid.

Fact of the matter is, the system under Rich-Rod did not suit Tate’s strengths. You’d have to be a complete idiot not to notice that. Robsinon is the PERFECT fit for that system.

U-H is not gonna adapt it’s offense to what Michigan used to do, instead, the Warriors under OC Nick Rolovich will continue to do what they do. Which, if you’ve ever seen Tate play, well, THAT’S a perfect fit.

C’mon Ferd, at least talk to the guy before you come to judgement.

    Kidding me!

    Such a joke!

  233. Ralph July 9, 2011 6:54 pm

Mallet (sp) also transferred out of Michigan when Rodriquez was named coach. He was a pocket passer and chose Arkansas for a better fit. Players have to find their niche-the offense, the coaches and team chemistry plays a part in the players development and ultimate success.

  238. BleedGreen808 July 9, 2011 7:25 pm

    Tate Forcier–

I am breaking my silence about Tate Forcier. I’ve heard both sides and to be honest, I don’t see why UH should not give him a second chance. The question that should be asked is what has he done that he doesn’t deserve a second chance? We’re not perfect species. We’ve all done something or made mistakes in the past that we are not proud of and it’s what you do with that second chance that matters.

Media is a double edge sword. They can either help you or be against you. Just because the media says one thing doesn’t always mean it’s the complete story. There is always more to the story than what is written.

If and/or when Tate Forcier does transfer to UH, fans are already dubbing him as the next great one. Before all this rumor, many were very high on David Graves. We fans sometimes forget who we already have. I for one am still very high on David Graves and yes it’s his job to lose. But in the end, may the best QB win.

Gigi- so happy to see you and David got to Petals and Beans. Looking forward to trying it sometime!

I’m in HNL for a seminar this weekend but have to rush home early tomorrow for our Rotary change of gavel. No golf this year, tho.

    Hi Liz!

Sorry I missed you. Had I known you were in town, I would have invited you to lunch at Longhi’s tomorrow.

WDoc and her hubby will be there.

It’s nice getting together with friends over a leisurely lunch.

Email me when you are available next time.

USA women getting robbed in World Cup Soccer. With replays, the referees made 3 bad calls that led directly to 2 Brazilian goals. One was a red card that gave Brazil a penalty kick. The USA player eliminated from play on a bad call. The replay shows that it shouldn’t have been a foul much less a red card. USA plays the rest of the game with 10 players to Brazil’s 11. The penalty kick resulting from the red card was blocked by USA goalie. Referee said that the goalie moved so a re kick was ordered. Replay shows goalie did not move. Re kick was made by Brazil. Brazil’s go ahead goal in overtime was scored when the passer of the goal was off sides so play should have been halted before the goal.Replay confirms. 2-1 Brazil in 1st overtime (2 ots in a game).

  264. warriorsun July 10, 2011 8:57 am

what is making some watchful warrior fans nervous is novel to our program and an indication of our upward progress. training hard!

there has been a few injuries in the “unsupervised” portion of training. frosh, samson anquay, is among the most severe and notable with an acl tear that will require surgery and delay, for at least a year until his debut as a warrior special team returner.

ive heard of pulls, hammies and the like.

nothing of epidemic levels but enuff to pause, and vigilently remind our athletes to religiousily adhere to their warm-up routines.

i havent seen the zeal in training in the past as much as one can witness this summer training cycle. every unit–top to bottom.

both newcomers and returnees are working hard as well as eager walk-ons who are pushing the bar…. perhaps it is bc there are 9-positions open on offense and more depth on D that is motivating our units on our team to work hard for playing time. tommy heffernan, hawaii’s trainer, undoubtably is part of the overall motivation.

just saying, we need to take the prescribed precautions: hydrate and regimented warmups.

train hard and take pause to train smart. you guys know the drill. go warriors!

Finally, Obama did not accuse McCain of racism. He suggested his campaign apparatus (not all of which McCain can control, by the way) MIGHT try to instill fear. So, can you assure me there will be no direct mail, chain e-mail, viral videos, blog posts or televised gaffes by any McCain supporters or Obama critics about madrassas, Hussein, or what have you before election day?

Well…QB Tom Brady seemed to be to voted Number 1 in The very best 100 Players of this season at official NFL web pages. I take great delight in his experience a lot. Late round draft collection, thin boy at the combine, then finally recommended a chance and having the fantasy of NFL prominence and a super model girlfriend. I used to show my great pride by putting on football jersey with a number 12 and his name. There’s a shop from where i ordered my great jerseys. Jeter’s fans can get mlb jerseys, Jordan’s follower can obtain discount nba jerseys and Crosby’s enthusiasts can order nhl jerseys wholesale there. What’s fantastic is they provide youth nfl jerseys and women jerseys. I gave 2 pieces as gifts to my nephew. He likes it very much. I bought my sports team a dozen of cheap nfl jerseys at about 20 dollars, quality is far better than expectation, big surprise. Actually i want to have my own name and number stitched on NFL uniforms, I hope they can custom jerseys soon.

How do we put these theoretical underpinnings into practice? We must recognize that immoral acts are never expedient. The essence of justice is keeping one’s word. The advice in “De Officilis” did not work for Cicero’s son, who was a drunkard, sold his services to Augustus, and lent his name to the new order of Augustus. Although Cicero’s son did not follow the advice given in “De Officilis,” Cicero left future generations this enduring statement of moral justice.
