New apps

With the application deadline at the end of this week, more than 25 coaches have called UH head coach Norm Chow about the vacant OC job.

It is not known how many other have filed formal applications.

Chow has said he is in no rush to fill the position.

* * * * *

Dejon Allen, a member of the 2012 recruiting class, still has not met all of the requirements to compete for the Warriors this spring.

Because of Allen’s talent and good citizenship, the Warriors probably would be willing to extend the scholarship offer through the 2013 season if he can meet those requirements.

Someone mentioned that the OC’s salary is in the range of 130k, is it safe to assume that since Chow is in now rush to fill the vacancy, the salary will be the same?

Try not to hand-wring too much ’bout recruiting, folks. Warriors are . . . a team.

Also . . . reposting (sort of) . . . That oogly-patterned white stripe going down the Warriors’ black pants . . . we making Warriors or Tron characters? What in heck is with that white stripe?

Get rid as many instances of white on the uniform . . . you saw how well Warriors did when they: 1) got rid of the rainbow; 2) used dark green and black . . . and silver. Ever since they employed the white pants, bleecccchhhhhhhhhhh. No, no, no, Blackwell would’ve vomited. Googly white stripe going down the black pants screams, “I work at an ice cream parlor! I work at an ice cream parlor!!!”

Ravens . . . they got all-black pants and they do well consistently. New O’leans? They got black pants . . . and they win Super Bowl. Yeah, yeah, they also got that scandal on the tail end, but, who f)t+s w/’em anymore?

Get. Back. To. Black. Dark green. Silver.

The Utah Utes WR coach AARON RODERICK turns down an offer to become UH’s OC.

Roderick is apparently entertaining offers from BYU (QB coach) and Wisconsin. Brandon Doman may be a candidate for Hawaii if Anae doesn’t keep him or he does not want to stay.

    —-

“Had a BYU source just tell me that Roderick hasn’t been offered the BYU Quarterback’s job (yet) but there has been contact between Robert Anae and Roderick. This could mean that Brandon Doman still could decide to stay.”

“Sources are telling me that Utah Utes wide receivers coach/passing coordinator Aaron Roderick is being pursued by three different schools. BYU has offered Roderick the quarterbacks coaching job which means that demoted offensive coordinator Brandon Doman will not take the position. I am also being told that Wisconsin is expected to contact him today for their wide receivers coaching opportunity. Hawaii coach Norm Chow had offered him the offensive coordinator position that he turned down.”

Would Doman really come here for a 130k salary?

  25. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 9, 2013 8:44 am

    Shoko,

The Regents approved a new pay scale in 2008 that could give the coordinators a salary range up to about $200,000. They should that upper limit. We may not have money now, but we didn’t have money and a zero-deficit when UHAD asked for those increases either. Spend ’em and add ’em.

    25. Ah, didn’t know they increased it. Not sure what other offers Doman may have if released from BYU, but having a budget of 200k sure helps in they hiring for UH.

  31. Shoko January 9, 2013 8:54 am

Speaking of salaries, Rolo must really love Reno if he turned down more money at Temple. I don’t think Nevada would match the offer at Temple. At least we know that the Wolf Pack will retain the Pistol offense.

  32. gobows January 9, 2013 8:59 am

#17 the UH trailed 17-20 against reno midway through the 2nd qtr, then the whole season turned to crap. at that point it got messy real quick and the team did a total nose dive that lasted for 7 and a half games.

    Howzit, Gang!

Whomever we get for OC might be contemplating what their job will really entail. On the one hand… they get to learn from Coach Chow. On the other hand… how much input will they really have to do what they want? I think some possible candidates might just be intimidated.

    Well, that’s my guess anyways.

Just want to see us get better. We’ve got a great schedule coming up. As we all know, wins will bring more and better recruits… plus put them ‘okoles back in the stands.

So looking forward to this year!

JJ didn’t have an OC, why does NC need an OC? NC should hire someone that will be useful on the practice field, not only in the film room.

  38. MattyBoy January 9, 2013 9:13 am

Why offer a guy that won’t come here? Especially so late in the recruiting game.

Also with Rolo staying put at Nevada, looks as if it will be increasingly harder to get a commitment from Elroy Masters. Especially with with a type of offense where he will be utilized a lot as suppose to Chows run-first offense.

  39. Will-I-Am January 9, 2013 9:25 am

Just read the new Nevada Coach, Polian, has his hands tied in bringing his own staff on board. According to one story, Ault’s existing staff (assistants) are locked in with two-year contracts ending in June 2014. Only way to make room is to buyout their contracts, which Nevada doesn’t have the funds to do.

#47 there’s a 2 cupcake minimum requirement to being an SEC powerhouse.

LSU gets UAB, Kent State, and Furman (the perennial power from the Southern Conference) at home. But opens against TCU in Tx.

Georgia dumps on North Texas and Appalachian State at home, but finishes the season in atlanta with tech.

Florida walks over Toledo and Georgia Southern. After each scrimmage they play in state rivals Miami and Florida State.

Tennessee opens with Austin Peay & Western Kentucky. South Alabama also goes to Knoxville in september.

I would like to see the UH get in on these money games. Sometimes they may be more profitable than a home game against a team from the FCS.

Turned off by ‘shady’ move, USC recruit de-commits

08:05 AM ET 01.09 | When there turned out to be a little less room for him, prep defensive lineman Kylie Fitts changed his mind. [Fitts] is de-committing from USC after learning he wouldn’t be able to enter school early, Wildcats coach Kurt Bruich said. USC told Fitts, a 6-foot-4, 265-pounder who graduated at the semester, on Monday they no longer had a spot for him to enroll early and wanted him to wait until June to enter school, Bruich said. “Recruiting man, it’s crazy,” Bruich said. “He’s wanted to go to USC for as long as he can remember and now he feels betrayed. … I think they thought because of that loyalty he’d still want to go there. He said to me ‘What am I supposed to do for the next five months?’ It seems shady. I think it seems shady to everyone.”

  81. kev-1 January 9, 2013 1:55 pm

I trust what Chow is doing, but I would rather hear him say that he wants to get an OC in here as soon as possible so we can begin improving and working on next year. I know he is essentially the OC, but the new hire has to be responsible for something, right?

  82. Shoko January 9, 2013 1:59 pm

Chris Murray, Pack beat writer, just tweeted that sources that reported Rolo’s salary was increased to 240k earlier today are inaccurate. However, he did confirm that Rolo will get a salary increase, just not 240k.

    59. I’m sure Rolo will be more involved in play calling and have overall offensive input. After all, Ault is gone and Polian is not an offensive guy, or at least savvy enough to run the Pistol without someone with experience; even tho Rolo only has a year’s worth.

  83. kev-1 January 9, 2013 2:00 pm

#81 BIK . . . I agree with you 100%. After that documentary came out, a lot of people were saying that they thought he was lying and being smug because he never made eye contact with the camera, etc. If you look into his eyes, there is a lot of pain, embarrassment, and struggle there. It takes a lot to be able to admit on camera that you are flawed. He did that.

People also criticize him for having his attorney there. Come on! He is in the middle of a legal case. His attorney had to be there.

Although he is responsible for many of his own hardships, I will always feel for him and remember that he led UH on a fantastic, exciting, seat filling run. Remember that people. One of my favorite Warriors of all time. Hands down.

Given your dislike for Te’o only because he didn’t sign with UH what’s wrong with asking you what would you have advised Manti to do if you were his father?

To put it into context, you had stated several times that you didn’t care for any local footballer who signed with anyone other than UH naming Te’o in particular. But your shots at Teo increased as ND made it’s run up the top 20 list. Your dislike for Te’o seemed almost fanatical.

While the decision may not have been strictly about money.. Nevada did offer him $240K to come back. 10K more than Temple and about double what he made this past year. If anything, he played his cards right.

Congrats to Bob Coolen on his raise and the extension.

Several former players (starters and non-starters alike) have expressed their fair share of “finally!!!” sentiments.

  139. papajoe2 January 9, 2013 8:50 pm

#140, maybe if he goes to the other schools, playing time may be minimal. Better chance of more playing time here.

  140. papajoe2 January 9, 2013 8:57 pm

I thought the big men of Hawaii was getting the ball a bit far from the basket, maybe 10-12 feet on the wing of the basket. Vander made most of his shots though, but would have liked to see Vander and Fotu closer to the basket to have a better chance of of scoring and grabbing and o rebound. At times a player would get the ball all by himself on the wing about 12′ from the basket. Instead of shooting, the players would dribble into defenders and either getting their shots blocked, bad shot in traffic, or harrassed into a turnover. Also, on defense, seemes like the wing players for Irvine would be alone on the backside for an open shot. jmho.

  141. WarriorNY January 9, 2013 9:34 pm

    Hello all,

I hope everyone has been doing well. I just have to chime in for a sec about the MBB team. They are a PG away from being Very good. I wish that transfer from San Jose St. was eligible.

Imagine if we still had the PG from my neck of the woods… Well, some of our students would be missing iPads and laptops but our team would be great!

  142. WarriorNY January 9, 2013 10:05 pm

We’ve had more turnovers than our opponent in every game this year except one… The fact that they are 9-6 despite that is insane… If the team can mature and handle their TOs, there is no reason why they can’t win the Big West and get a spot in the NCAA tourny…

In basketball, teams average about one point per possession. For each turnover we have, we are losing one possession and our opponent gains one… That’s an average two point swing for each turnover… When we have 7 more Turnovers than UCI, that’s basically giving them 14 free points! I believe we had 8 more TOs than Illinois (16 point swing) but only a 1 point loss in OT…

  143. WarriorNY January 9, 2013 10:08 pm

My point is this would be a very good team if we can limit the turnovers… Sorry I had to rant after watching the game on espnu… Anyway have a good night folks…

I’d like all the “local boys” who played high school football here in Hawaii, who have the abilities to play college football to sign UH as well, selfishly…..

However, even if they go away, no matter where, I still cheer them on. No matter what, they represent the 808, and carry the Hawaiian Flag for all of us.

  163. Chicken Grease January 10, 2013 6:26 am

NFL got tons of money . . . but, they haven’t a special division to hire science and medical types to monitor and track this kind of post-hit thing; nay, should be an entire DEPARTMENT in the NFL.

You know they’re not doing a lot about it when ESPN’s and other sports venues’ reports on these ailments and injuries look obligatory and grade school student two-page essay-like and that one of the more clearer implication of such situations find themselves in the scenes involving Matthew Modine and Lawrence Taylor in Any Given Sunday.
