Word on the street is the sand imported for UH’s practice court is too rough. There were reports of too many scrapes and cuts.

The sand is expected to be replaced.

There will be five  football recruits in town this weekend.

This would be a nice backup sport for Isaac Fotu: Fotu video.

i hear he is a great recruiter as well.

  6. haka January 16, 2014 8:34 am

Would be nice if one was named Holy Grail!

  7. al January 16, 2014 8:34 am

i was thinking standhardinger would make a nice middle blocker/hitter, too.

  8. boya_jr January 16, 2014 8:35 am

    Go Warriors!

  9. tommui January 16, 2014 8:35 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

  11. jm2375 January 16, 2014 8:38 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Typical, typical. Bet they went with the cheapest one available. *tsigh*

    Welcome to Hawaii, Coach Clune!

Too bad the vb and bb seasons overlap. Maybe once his bb eligibility is done?

    GO WARRIORS!! Beat the Beach!
(Don’t get the 49’ers reference for Long Beach in So Cal)

  12. Stephen Tsai January 16, 2014 8:38 am

I think Fotu could play tight end.

  13. NorthShoreFan January 16, 2014 8:38 am

Hope they take em down Northside…see da waves…and traffic jam…

  14. Stephen Tsai January 16, 2014 8:40 am

    jm:
Apparently there was a little too much coral.
A UH person described it as a “cat litter.”
That’s one of those visuals that’s hard to forget.

  15. NorthShoreFan January 16, 2014 8:42 am

must be wen get some home made sand….da one down da beach not like dat

  16. papajoe2 January 16, 2014 8:54 am

How deep must the sand be for the court? Get plenty sand in Waimea bay if they will replace it with what they are using now but make sure they clean it first. I remember they filled Fort Derussy beach with sand from New York. The water at the beach became milky for years and the fish ran away. I don’t know how it is now though.

  17. Former UH Athlete January 16, 2014 9:01 am

12… Would Fotu need to wear a helmet?

I think if they strap on a facemask, put the “H” logo above his ears and he’d be good to go with the fro as protection.

  18. Stephen Tsai January 16, 2014 9:03 am

I know nothing about sand except when I come home from the beach, I can’t get it out of my shorts.

  19. iwonderwhytheyhateme January 16, 2014 9:16 am

Agree with Ferd’s column today regarding Duane Akina. Make a go at it, nothing to lose.

With the money we are “saving” from the reduced salary for DC and OC, we may be able to bump up the package a bit.

  20. 310Dude January 16, 2014 9:28 am

UH should go to bellows beach get the sand there, it is some of the softest sand around.

  21. dannyp January 16, 2014 9:36 am

    3

Majority of the recruits visiting already committed.

  22. jimmy the lock January 16, 2014 9:38 am

I wonder what the specs were for the sand and who wrote it? Amateur. Lose money.

  23. jeezy33 January 16, 2014 9:38 am

Darrian Josey, Corey Turner, Jerrell JAckson, Daniel Lewis, Nick Nelson, Marquis Fairchild are visiting….

  24. jonj January 16, 2014 9:40 am

Watched some of the NFLPA practice last night and they are raving on schoeder! He’s making all the right reads in practice. But as we all kno the announcers are saying he’s the smallest QB and doesn’t have a strong arm. But he is making up for it with his football IQ.

  25. jeezy33 January 16, 2014 9:40 am

Aaron Glover was scheduled but not sure if he’s coming for sure

  26. Turfwar January 16, 2014 9:49 am

When attending men’s volleyball games I always thought Fotu would be a difference maker in that sport but I also think Davis Rozitis would make a heck of a middle blocker. That sand at UH is exactly that – crushed coral. Somebody didn’t do their homework. What they need to get is a sand called “Maui Gold” from yes Maui. There are veins of this sand in Wailuku and other areas and it has a brown or gold tint to it thus the name. I used it take care of Kailua’s baseball infield and it is excellent to topdress the grass or around the bases for sliding. Refined and smooth. Got it from a parent who works for I think Ameron. Waialae CC used to use it too but it has become increasingly harder to acquire according to a another parent who works with the grounds crew at Waialae.

  27. Turfwar January 16, 2014 9:54 am

    jonj good stuff. Thanks.

  28. Warrior Dave January 16, 2014 10:04 am

#24, thanks Jeezy33 for the names.

  29. Pete Jek January 16, 2014 10:17 am

What time is the news conference? I dont think Standhardinger has the vertical needed to be a good MB in the MPSF.

  30. Da Punchbowl Kid January 16, 2014 10:45 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 😉

“Navigating the coarse?” Really, Stephen? That’s rough! 🙂

  31. sdbowfan January 16, 2014 11:12 am

Coaching staff has connections with the state of Utah? Shocking!! (sigh….)

  32. sdbowfan January 16, 2014 11:23 am

How is this for a news story Tsai.

“Recruiting will be difficult than ever because the lack of TV broadcasts on the major networks. Losing and a boring offense would scare any network trying to bring in viewers.”

  33. Boolakanaka January 16, 2014 11:27 am

A couple of comments on Ferd’s article this morning. First, Duane is 55, not 52, and this is the most basic fact about him, he was born in 1958. It irks me that a professional writer either did not take the time to fact check, such a simple fact, or is just careless in his writing.

Second, unless someone is going to move over, I can’t imagine someone who has coached on the winning side of a national championship game, and has placed more pro players than I have fingers and toes, is going to be satisfied to merely coach DBs. Duane is arguably the best DB coach in college, and certainly the best teacher of man-on techniques in the country, bar none. Look at any number of boards that focus on college coaching, and his praise is long and consistent.

Thus, if UH wanted him, they should have gone full board to offer him the DC position. However the little birdies I speak to, said he was too rich for UH taste, has no history with Chow, has a decided preference for almost exclusive man-on schemes, and was getting more than a few upper margin BSC programs, plus a couple of NFL teams. But, then again, just my piddley 2 cents.

  34. bowwar January 16, 2014 11:42 am

    Any QBs amongst the visitors?

  35. hawaiian January 16, 2014 11:49 am

Please, no more “coaches” with Hawaii ties. I don’t care who coaches these kids/young adults, as long as they can coach! We don’t need any high-priced coaches with “ties” to Hawaii. If he don’t want to be here…we don’t need him!

  36. gobows January 16, 2014 11:53 am

    30 peter jak

at 6-8, its more about quick hops than it is about vertical. net is about 8 feet.

  37. d1shima January 16, 2014 12:19 pm

Schroeder qb’ing at practice on the U now

  38. d1shima January 16, 2014 12:27 pm

Threw a pik. UNLV QB came in and threw a dime for a TD.

  39. A-House January 16, 2014 12:29 pm

IIRC, it is illegal/crime to “mine” sand from Hawaii’s beaches up to the high water mark.

this is a result from some people taking sand from a particular Molokai beach that faces Oahu and selling them – excellent grade of sand!

surely, there must be some specification, UH or NCAA, of the ‘grade’ of sand used for VB

  40. haka January 16, 2014 12:46 pm

    AVCA Sand Specifications

    THE SAND
Sand specifications required for all FIVB beach (sand) volleyball competitions. This sand is very soft, won’t compact (won’t need to be tilled) and produces very little dust (which is especially important for indoor beach facilities).

A minimum of 40cm (16 inches) of soft sand is required throughout the entire Free Zone (18m x 26m – the court is 8m x 8m) and the player areas and scorer’s table must be outside the free zone. The FIVB requires the following sand specifications:

Name Particle Size Spec (% Retained on Sieves)
    Fine gravel 2.0 mm 0%
    Very Course sand 1.0 mm – 2.0 mm 0%-6%
Coarse sand 0.5 mm – 1.0 mm min of 80%
Medium sand 0.25 mm – 0.5 mm max of 92%
    Fine sand 0.15 mm – 0.25 mm 7%- 18%
Very fine sand 0.05 mm – 0.15 mm not greater than 2.0%
Silt and Clay below 0.05 mm not greater than 0.15%

These requirements related to the particle sizes allow for excellent drainage and must absolutely be considered in order to successfully face all different weather conditions. The sand must also be free of any organic material.

Particle Shape: The recommended sand requirements for Beach Volleyball court installations have the following: physical properties:
    • be naturally weathered;
    • be sub angular/rounded;
    • not be acquired from a crushed rock source.

  41. Dan-O January 16, 2014 12:52 pm

I find it extremely funny that every time there is a coaching opening at UH, people assume that other coaches with “Hawaii ties” are even remotely interested in the positions.

  42. Kama Krab January 16, 2014 1:16 pm

    Howzit Everybody,

Would be great to have Duane on staff but the only way he’ll come is if he is the head man. Don’t get me wrong, he does want to come back but that’s the only way.

  43. ai-eee-soos January 16, 2014 1:24 pm

    J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS

New York Jets: ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports Rex Ryan has agreed to a multi-year extension with the Jets.

  44. aaron January 16, 2014 1:46 pm

Dan-O, I find it funny when people make assumptions about assumptions, especially when they go out of their way to sound condescending.

  45. Whats up January 16, 2014 1:56 pm

If one thing we learned this year? Is recruiting in Florida is important if you want to raise the talent level of your program.

Florida State of the ACC just showed the high and mighty SEC and its high maka maka fans how its done in with mostly Florida recruits. And those Florida recruits won Florida State the National Championship and undisputed #1 in all polls.

Go get those Florida recruits Hawaii coaches!

  46. st anthony trojan January 16, 2014 1:59 pm

i guess no one up there… ask questions.. about ne thing..when there is a job or project to be accomplished..like..if we build this softball stadium.. will all be able to see from where they sit…
or where is the key for the locker for the visitors …or well take your pick.. surely they must be others like the so called “concert”….even the basic of questions should be… lets talk to the volleyball coach.. surely he must have some ideas on what we need ? did not Mr. Les
import dirt for his infield from Molokai…just saying…ne one here know what the word is in Hawaiian for “backwards” is ??? so can say…IMUA two steps.. n backward 5 steps… great progress they are making up there…

  47. Former UH Athlete January 16, 2014 2:09 pm

21… good call on the Bellows beach sand. Been there once, and was very nice.

Maybe take some sand from Lanikai while they are at it.

  48. Former UH Athlete January 16, 2014 2:14 pm

No doubt that Schroeder is the smartest QB at the NFLPA game.

  49. azwarrior22 January 16, 2014 3:19 pm

For some reason, I can’t get any volume with that Clune video. Can’t read lips. Do you have a transcript?

  50. Rodney January 16, 2014 3:35 pm

    Ferd is typical Ferd!!!!

  51. el burro sabio January 16, 2014 4:02 pm

Better put up a good fence around the practice courts to keep out the stray cats.

  52. NorthShoreFan January 16, 2014 4:35 pm

gotta scoop net da court and find da sand crabs befo da game…

Better put up a good fence around the practice courts to keep out the stray cats.

cannot that is a proactive stance and uh policy is reactive

  54. sdbowfan January 16, 2014 5:21 pm

JJ had a staff with Hawaii ties = Wins

Chow has a staff with Utah = Losses

If you follow formulas that work, you will be successful.

Examples are NFL teams that continually hire coaches from the Bill Walsh, Bill Parcells and Bill Belechik coaching tree.

BTW, Florida recruits has yet to shine brighter than any other recruit.

  55. kev-1 January 16, 2014 8:05 pm

What the hell is going on with Bess? You think he would have learned from the first controversial picture. What a shame.

  56. Warrior Dave January 16, 2014 8:42 pm

It makes me laugh when people post that so and so is looking to transfer from their current school and follow it up with “Do you think they would be a good fit for UH or that UH should go after them “.

  57. UHfan808 January 16, 2014 10:18 pm

    Hi Tsaikos and Lurkers!

    Happy day after Hump Day!

  58. UHfan808 January 16, 2014 10:24 pm

    Interesting news today…

    A little of this…

    …And a little of that

    🙂

Welcome to Hawaii, Mr. Clune! We are hoping praying and wanting lots of good things 🙂

Hope that sand issue gets resolved the right way. Sounds like there was some lack of communication and or misunderstand in what needed to do. Just no do that again or that kind of thing again, please, everybody at UH.

Hoping we arm our offense and defense with the best possible for our situation!

Regarding Fotu, wow, what an arm attack! Ka-POW!!!

  59. wafan January 17, 2014 3:52 am

    A super Aloha Friday, everyone!

  60. Inyoface January 17, 2014 6:19 am

    Bess got arrested this morning

  61. 3-Prong January 17, 2014 6:22 am

Just another beautiful Aloha Friday in Paradise!

…….and as always, LET’S GO BOWS! Turn the table at the Stanley Tonight!

  62. 3-Prong January 17, 2014 6:28 am

    Davone meeds some help.

    http://www.miamiherald.com/2014/01/17/3876798/former-miami-dolphins-receiver.html

  63. Boolakanaka January 17, 2014 6:48 am

64-My man Davone, maybe communing a bit too much with Haile Salissey, if you know what I mean.

  64. Former UH Athlete January 17, 2014 7:09 am

Just saw the Bess headlines… Doesn’t sound good. Wouldn’t be surprised if this is the start of the end for him. A lot of guys start to crumble a year after signing a nice contract. I think the agents need to emphasise to their clients that NFL contracts are voidable and the money can be taken away at any time.

  65. Former UH Athlete January 17, 2014 7:19 am

correction… non-guaranteed money can be taken away at any time. Which for Bess, is most of it.

The main reason why Cleveland acquired him was to mentor the young WRs they had. Pretty sure thats out the window now, and his production isn’t worth hanging onto at his current salary. I believe the next Cleveland HC cuts Bess as he cleans house and installs his system. The arrest and charges will certainly be the main factor if this is the case.

Looking at the silver lining, if Bess gets cut, there’s a chance Belichick might throw a lifeline because Bess would fit perfectly into the Patriots offense should Edelman, Amendola, or Collie not return next season. With the arrest on his record, Bess won’t have any suitors unless someone takes a chance with him at league minimum salary. Belichick has thrown plenty of lifelines to questionable character players and some have worked out very well. Some not so much. The main point is that he throws lifelines.

  66. Inyoface January 17, 2014 7:23 am

I think the publicity he got over the pictures might have gotten to him. June might need to reach out to him.

  67. Former UH Athlete January 17, 2014 7:27 am

RE Bess’ contract, just saw that $5.7 of the $8.8 is guaranteed… so not as bad as I originally thought. Actually, Bess’ agent did a nice job locking up that much guaranteed.

  68. mo808 January 17, 2014 7:30 am

    Good Morning Folks!

  69. mo808 January 17, 2014 7:31 am

Sad news about Davone…praying for him to recover from this slide!

  70. Shoko January 17, 2014 7:50 am

Not sure what’s going through Bess’ head these days. Might want to revisit the hard times growing up prior to given that second chance at Hawaii to get a little perspective in life before it gets worse.

  71. Jeezy33 January 17, 2014 7:53 am

Mistake on visitors. Looks like Jackson and turner are on 31st. Which is good. Last chance to seal deal.

Do the 5 should be daniel Lewis, darrien josey, Aaron glover, nick Nelson, and marquis Fairchild .. All commits except josey. Need josey because he’s a speed guy

  72. Former UH Athlete January 17, 2014 8:02 am

Whoa… just saw Bobby Hauck’s new deal at UNLV. $700k per year + incentives. Although I gotta say, incentives are a extremely weak.

Seriously… only $15k if they get 11 wins. Only $100k if UNLV makes a BCS-level game (in other words national playoffs)????? Bobby will need to head to the craps table to turn that into a real bonus for those accomplishments.

Hauck’s salary is broken into 3 parts… $250k base pay, $225k media appearances, and $225k public appearances.

  73. Former UH Athlete January 17, 2014 8:05 am

73… last minutes are always good. Need to send the recruits home with a fresh image of the state of Hawaii (not just the university).

Somebody should “recommend” a nice bento box for the plane ride home. Giving a recruit a bento box would be a no-no according to NCAA rules.
