Naeole joins UH staff

Chris Naeole, a Kahuku High graduate who played 11 NFL seasons, is joining the Warrior staff as an assistant coach.

An opening was created with Tommy Lee’s retirement as offensive coordinator in December.

Norm Chow said there will be an “adjustment” to the coaching staff, and assignments on offense still are to be determined.

Chow praised Naeole as the best fit from among 15 finalists who met UH’s minimum and desired qualifications. Naeole, a former first-round pick, played five seasons with the New Orleans Saints and another six with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Until suffering a quadriceps injury in the middle of the 2007 season —his last in the NFL — Naeole did not miss a start because of an injury.

Naeole coached the past three seasons at Iolani School.

Welcome Coach Naeole. A great add to the staff. Given the success of the Raiders offense he brings some mana to the field.

So, no Doman or Polamalu? At least we can keep working that Kahuku Pipeline.

Chris Naeole, wecome to the Warrior staff.

  7. clyde February 11, 2013 12:54 am

Good hire. If Naeole can work wonders with the 180-pound linemen at Iolani, imagine what he can do with 300-pounders? Maybe Naeole takes OL, and Wiesehan takes WR and either he or RB coach Uperesa takes Lee’s spot in the booth?

It will be interesting to see how Chow juggles staff assignments.

  8. clyde February 11, 2013 1:29 am

I’m sure Stephen won’t mind me calling attention to brother Mike’s (and Jerry Campany’s) follow up to Kalani’s state soccer championship. Watched it on TV and was perplexed as to what was happening to the reigning state player of the year after the game.

What a tragic story. Healing prayers to the Klink family.

  9. Moocher February 11, 2013 1:42 am

    naeole….good get!

naeole may be the answer to the coach cav void.

    Howzit, Gang!

    Happy New Year!

Was out and about for all of yesterday, and made the 2-hour drive back in heavy rain and poor driving conditions. Got home mentally exhausted and physically drained after parking the car. I swear, no matter where you go, you’ll find people who just do not belong on the roads… especially when driving conditions are anything but perfect… and even then, they have trouble staying within those white marks on the road designating each respective lane!

Lots of positive news coming out of Manoa lately!

Gratz to our student-athletes for an outstanding weekend! Can’t stand that I miss the majority of it every year. Can’t wait to be back home!

Welcome, Coach Naeole! Great anticipation to see how things fall into place. Could be a magical year…

    DoubleB,

Klink responded with another goal in the 58th minute, when, after a delay to get an ambulance across the field to attend to a spectator, Moribe put a pass right on Klink’s foot and watched him speed by another Punahou defender and knock home the equalizer.

Ching said the spectator carted off was Klink’s mother, but he wasn’t informed until after the game.

Naeole is a great catch, one brick at a time is how we build the foundation……GO WARRIORS!

  35. Buffoman February 11, 2013 6:21 am

Last year as Coach was assembling his coaching staff, I added my 2 cents by suggesting Chris Naole. That was probably premature but wow, what a get for the Warriors at this time.

All of those second guessers on what it takes to get noticed as a potential next step player on the o-line could probably stop guessing as Chris could set things pretty straight with regard to what is expected at the next level. That young man was a beast on the line and excelled at his craft.

He is young, has energy and could become a great coach as he continues to learn.

Coach Chow is really being thoughtful in building a new kind of Warrior football team.

  44. Chicken Grease February 11, 2013 6:55 am

A Grease’ll probably include in this Lenten devotions — which begins this Wednesday, Ash Wednesday — not reading or posting to The Warrior Beat.

So, basically, for 40 days, 40 nights from Ash Wednesday (technically ends on Good Friday, but, a Grease waits until the Monday right after Easter Sunday for good measure), a Grease may end up not reading or posting to

    The Warrior Beat.

    🙂

To all you local yocal dimwits and itiots that castigated and harrassed Coach Chow and said he wouldn’t be able to recruit…blah…blah..blah….as Bulla in #34 blog said, “it takes one brick at a time to build a foundation,” and esp. with his type of offense, he needed players and really didn’t have the players last year to play in his system…and to all of you saying he should have brought in Rolovich so they could continue that spread offense, FORGET IT!!! When you want to implement an offense, you “stick to your guns” and BE PATIENT and it will take time but with this year’s recruiting class…bringing in Naeole to work that offensive line….and another yr. of good recruiting …I can see positive results down the future but you have to be patient and not just sit on your rear and criticize….to be supportive you have to donate and attend the games and not only attend when you have a winner which means there should at least be 35-40,000 in the stands to show support…STOP CRITICIZING AND BE SUPPORTIVE…there were quite a few of you that said he couldn’t recruit or that recruits wouldn’t come here etc…blah..blah..but many of the recruits said they came because of COACH CHOW and HIS STAFF……irate as I am to read those critical blogs of Coach Chow, I would wish you dimwits would be supportive and not be arm chair qb’s and let Chow do what he is getting paid to do…….in other words…JUST SHADDUP ALREADY!!!

  56. Shoko February 11, 2013 7:57 am

Welcome Coach Naeole to the Warrior ohana! I patiently await the so-called “adjustments” to the rest of the coaching staff.

  57. Haleakala February 11, 2013 8:00 am

    Hossana: Ditto!

I have a feeling that most of the naysayer flamers are young and have not yet experienced developing programs, not necessarily football related, on their own. Good things don’t happen overnight. It takes time, perseverance, and hard work. But it takes people who learn over time to know that.

Many people nowadays want immediate self gratification and are not happy unless that happens. So there are a lot of unhappy people in our “modern” society.

  58. Shoko February 11, 2013 8:05 am

According to a latest ESPN report, the Big East’s new television contract could pay members less than $2 million per year. Of course, thats more than what the MW pays, but if you consider the TV bonus that was offered to all MW members that could make it profitable than the BE TV contract.

  60. Annoddah Dave February 11, 2013 8:10 am

@#s 52 & 58 Hoss & Hale: Yes, the lack of patience is symptomatic of our fast paced society created by the rapidity of technology. Even super computers take time to calculate, albeit, much faster than anything to date. As a season tix holder since the late 60s, I surely can wait a couple of seasons to allow the re-building. But, it better not take too long, lest I punch out before it happens.

  65. Not Guilty February 11, 2013 8:38 am

Outstanding! Not only will the o-line be taught by someone who started over 11 seasons in the NFL and who was a former all-American, but he is the local guy, with former playing credibility, who is going to connect with the top local recruits. On top if it, Chris is just a great guy. Go Warriors!

  66. Independent Thinker February 11, 2013 8:39 am

It is possible to care about an institution, and not necessarily agree with others on this blog about how well it is being run or about the decision-making coming out of that institution, and yet be quite reasonable.

Last time I checked, this is what made America a great country – robust debate.

Welcome back Coach Naole!!! Glad to have you back home, with the Warriors.

It would have been nice to get Kennedy Polamalu on the UH Warrior Football Coaching Staff, but it still a nice hire in getting Chris Naeole to the Warrior Football Coaching Staff! The Offensive Line Play reflects the temperament of the Offensive Line Coach, and the play in the offensive will surprise many Warrior fans in 2013, as the offense will be entertaining for this upcoming season! Nice hire and welcome to the Warrior Football Family Coach Naeole!

  69. A-House February 11, 2013 8:59 am

There are too many examples wherein a “technician” is promoted to a supervisor’s position and cannot meet the requirements of a leader/manager.

Many brilliant individuals do well academically, but cannot transmit their knowledge to others. No different from a doctor who has minimal “people skill” or bedside manners.

Not saying Coach Naole will represent the above – but, I will give him the benefit of the doubt and see what has happened after 3 or 4 years as I do not really know him or his skills teaching football techniques to players.

It is, however, a coup to have him on staff for recruiting and strengthen the pipeline to Kahuku.

  70. tom-warriornation February 11, 2013 9:02 am

ST: how much will it cost to do an renovation of the football locker rooms (to help recruiting)? Can the Tsaiko Athletic Fund be once again called upon for this (I am assuming Nakoa doesn’t cover this item); also there may be contractors who would be willing to donate their time. If 10,000 fans can donate $25 each=$250,000. We have $1900 in our Warrior Nation Fund that I could transfer over. What do you think?

  71. A-House February 11, 2013 9:06 am

Was it a wise move to make grad assistants OL and DL coaches? How did this affect the training and outcome of games played in 2012?

With a year under their belts, hope all the learning curve in 2012 will pay dividends in 2013.

  72. A-House February 11, 2013 9:09 am

    tom #72:

to renovate the locker rooms – did someone post a while a go that there is a “work in progress” to improve it and the cost would be around $1.5 million?

  73. BG February 11, 2013 9:21 am

Good morning everyone! Welcome Coach Naeole! I continue to be optimistic over the way the Warrior program is progressing…not perfect, but reality usually isn’t.

Continuing to travel around Kwajalein and Ebeye today. Last nite’s dinner at a top ranked high chief’s compound was an unforgetable experience for my palate! Consumed were delicacies that us everyday folks will probably never experience again. SteveM, I’ll gladly meet you to compare notes. bbl tonight (late)

  74. BG February 11, 2013 9:33 am

    Col @ #73

If we’re talking about generic grad students who just graduated by college a short time ago, your concern is probably justified. But, grad student assistants can cover a wide range of experience and age. Specific example…I’m 66 this year and working on my 2nd masters. In the same way, an nfl’er who left early for a long career playing and coaching could be returning to Hawaii and finishing up a degree. Short answer… I guess it depends.

Wishing you and your family a fabulous day today!

Still holding out hope Cal Lee will get a chance to lead UH. Hard not to believe in a guy who can win that many Prep and State titles.

  81. Whats up February 11, 2013 10:24 am

Cal Lee and his brother had a chance to prove they where FBS level head coach material and they where replaced by Aranda and Rolo respectively. Some coaches just don’t have what it takes at the next level. Aranda and Rolo have what it takes they just need some more time around the FBS to develop into head coach material and get there shot. If you don’t care about Chow as the head coach, well thats your opinion. But Cal Lee and his brother where Warrior coaches and calling plays and they didn’t get the call for Head Coach job anywhere at the FBS level.

I wouldn’t bad mouth Chow about Schroeder playing for us. Sean Schroeder was the best QB Hawaii had last season, period. As much as I had it with Sean Schroeder by the middle of the season getting rocked and shell shocked. He did play his heart out for the Warriors and us the fans, and the injury prone O line and WR’s played like crap this past season. Dropping open passes, running the wrong routes and the Oline unable to block anybody for more than 2 seconds sometimes 3. The only bright spot was the running backs but the WR’s and Oline were dismal. So lets be fair to Sean and not bad mouth him. I think Sean Schroeder is still the starting QB until Taylor Graham or somebody takes it from him and then Sean is solidly the #2 backup. The only way I can see anybody, like Woosley, Higgins, Alo or Keenan taking the #1 or #2 job is if Sean has a complete and total breakdown in his performance, but other than that I just don’t see SS being 3rd string or 4th string.

Taylor Graham is the only QB on the roster that can take the starting job away from Sean Schroeder. The only other QB to have playing time is Higgins and his arm strength was a problem thats why he didn’t finish the season as the starting QB. Now can all these QB young men improve by next fall? Sure? But it’s unlikely they will improve to the level of Sean Schroeder and Taylor Graham, who are also improving in the off season too. But don’t bad mouth Chow for Sean Schroeder, SS gave was the best QB we had last season and he gave us everything he had.

  83. PONO February 11, 2013 10:33 am

Naeole is a great hire. Just like recruiting athletes Hawaii has the same issue with getting coaches. Many fans are saying to bring in Doman/Polamalu etc. While that would be great why would they take such a huge pay cut to come out here when they could get something comparable on the mainland. Realistically Chow has to target up and coming coaches or ones that have a connection to the islands based on the pay ranges he’s stuck with. Naeole has both which is why it’s a great hire.

Naeole was a good get for us. Kennedy Polamalu still would be a good get. He was student body president while at Mater Dei and surely would start up a pipeline from the school that gave us Colt, Leinert, Barkely and Next year Forrest.

A poster on WSN stated Coach Uperesa may be in a more administrative role this season and that another spot could open up for an assistant coach.

    Any truth to that?

  89. HawnMantis February 11, 2013 10:52 am

Being a great prep coach doesn’t always translate to success at the college level. Remember that super prep coach who got the job as HC at Notre Dame and the subsequent results. Having said that, I feel that Cal Lee was a very effective assistant on JJ’s staff.

    Great pickup.

There had been rumors that Wiesehan was not going to be with the Oline this year. This might solidify the rumor. I would not be surprised to see Wiesey with the receivers now.

    BIK

  95. gobows February 11, 2013 11:19 am

Tony doesn’t coach the D line, if he did maybe they would have been better prepared to stop the run…it wouldn’t surprise me if Chris is not coaching the O line. not exactly sure why the O line had so much problems. is it speed, strength, technique, experience, coaching or all of it?

Today the President (and the Country) honored Staff Sgt. Clinton Romesha who received the Medal of Honor. You can read about how he kept going up the hill, under fire, to rescue his fellow soldiers. We admire him for daring great odds, kept on going despite everything being against him.

We cannot compare his exploits with that of Sean Schroeder. Yet here is a young man who also faced great odds, getting smacked down repeatedly and yet getting up, over and over again, despite the odds being against him.

    He has given his all.

I wish his critics would start giving their all to Na Koa instead of just their lip.

Lord knows half of what hossana’s defense of Chow doesn’t come close to half the anti- and hate on Chow of last season. (and continues to today.)

    #105:

Fogive me, but I don’t recall many “Chow haters” on this blog – maybe with other blogs.

However, I was disappointed in his offense last year with the lack of creativity to counter the lack of talent he had been accoustomed to on the mainland.

Is it true that the West Coast offense and/or the “pro-set” is a thing of the past? Being replaced by a “spread offense” that many sports analysts/commentators put down in the mid-2000 which UH was somewhat successful with – so was Texas A&M and Houston? If so, will Chcow continue to band his head against the wall to run his offense which requries talented OL players which he will have difficulty recruiting as they would prefer to be with a BCS school?

    Prove me wrong, Coach Chow!!!!!!!!!!!

Nearly every college and pro team, today, uses a modified version of the “spread” or “run-n-shoot” offense. Chris, what’s his name, was especially “hard” whenever he spoke of UH and the run-n-shoot. Today, not merely a mention of the past, guess his position has changed or he is to embarrassed to put down the “spread”, with all the BCS schools using the spread. Guess the former “nay-sayers” of the run-n-shoot had to keep quiet when “Johhny Football” won the Heisman.

    Monday Missles:

    1) Christian Standhardinger, congratulations, AGAIN! He is playing like a maniac, hustling, falling on the floor, he’s all over the court. He is THE big reason why the Warriors have won 5 straight and everybody else is getting in the act too. Clearly, he is the MVP of the team. Great job.

    2) Norm Chow – I have said Chow is stubborn, he’s a senior citizen. Well, he is stubborn and he is a senior citizen. But, I have also said that his first recruiting class has ability and talent. Guys like Mr. Honolulu, Jackson, Fonua, Garcia-Williams, Clarke, and some good guys redshirting like Lakalaka, Koloamatangi, Watanabe, etc. Chow and his assistants can recruit. You can say that 2 years of Chow’s recruits, far surpasses the last 2 years of McMackin’s both in terms of impact and talent level. Chow learned a lot in his first year as a Head Coach. He took his lumps and some heat for his play calling and personnel. That’s the nature of the business. He’ll be better this year. The good thing every year is that everybody starts 0-0 and everybody is undefeated. His focus was to get bigger, taller, and more athletic players, to look like a Division I (FBS) BCS type team. You can see that they are making some strides in that area.

    3) Lebron James – two words, “simply unstoppable”.

    4) Felix Hernandez – no pitcher is worth $175 M. Mariners are wasting their money.

    5) Illinois – beat 5 ranked teams already, Butler, Gonzaga, Ohio St., #1 Indiana, and yesterday Minnesota.

    6) Miami (Fla) – they look like a Final 4 team too me. They have shootting (Scott, Larkin), height (5 guys are 6’10” and taller), inside game, great coaching by Larranaga.

    7) Most underpaid QBs – Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick, and Andy Dalton.

  104. Kevin February 11, 2013 1:07 pm

As if there was any doubt..

Kaia Parnaby is the Big West Pitcher of the Week!

    She went 3-1 w/2 saves, 39 K’s, & a 0.66 era.

  105. Stephen Tsai February 11, 2013 1:26 pm

Actually, pro-set offense was a generic term he used.

The Warriors were in a three-receiver set for most of the plays. Things will be different this year because Josh Long is supposed to be a very good motion tight end. And the receivers are tall and fast. And Taylor Graham is quite the quarterback. He’s a lot more mobile than people think.

  106. al February 11, 2013 1:35 pm

112…i, too am surprised that many did not realize that we more often than not lined up in a three receiver set and/or a four wide set than being in a traditional pro-set with two wr’s.

    back to my guri-guri.

  107. jonj February 11, 2013 1:43 pm

And thats the reason why i didnt understand chows lack of offense!! he majority of the time was in a 3, 4 even sometimes a 5 wide package (which we have the personel for) and still could not move the ball!

I am not gonna lie i did like this class. it was good not great. we need Oline and didnt really get what we needed! I really like Tupai tho!

  108. dannyp February 11, 2013 1:45 pm

We ran spread sets but we still had our base personnel along with he same passing concepts which were terrible.

  109. Derek February 11, 2013 1:48 pm

The Wahine bats need to come around to help Kaia and Keiki. You can’t win 1-0, 2-0, 2-1, close games, especially against very good teams. A good time to start is the upcoming road trip this week, weekend. Losing to UW in the final was tough. Wonder if Coolen thought of starting Carlos against UW and had Kaia closing like the first game against them?

  110. jimmy the lock February 11, 2013 2:07 pm

I’m no coach but I think other non-coaches would agree that the O-line is the key. Look at Alabama and Texas A&M, they arguably have the best O-line in college. During the SEC season they face the biggest and baddest D-linemen. Fricken D-linemen in the SEC are huge. They hone their line every game. Yeah, so…yeah, need to get better in the O-line. Chris Naeole is a great start.

    @Derek

Ahem, a win is a win. I don’t get your statement “You can’t win 1-0, 2-0, 2-1, close games, especially against very good teams.” because isn’t that a win? 🙄

  111. Buffoman February 11, 2013 2:09 pm

  113. Stephen Tsai February 11, 2013 2:13 pm

There will be some interesting changes to the offense.

Chow said he wants a tough, running game, but he’s not locked into a certain offense. I think you’ll find the QB rolling out a lot more this year.

  125. HawaiiMongoose February 11, 2013 3:13 pm

I think our struggles last season had more to do with execution than with the scheme. Obviously the coaches are accountable for both, but execution is also a function of player talent and player health. The talent Coach Chow inherited from the previous regime wasn’t too deep at some positions, and a lot of key guys were hurt. He didn’t make excuses but those things were not in his control. With better QB and WR talent and a healthier D-line, I hope and expect Coach Chow’s schemes to be more productive in 2013.

  126. Inyoface February 11, 2013 3:22 pm

I’m not a fan of an empty back field with 5 wideouts, it never seems to work, even for the Niner’s. The defense already knows that its a pass 100% of the time.

  130. PolyMom February 11, 2013 5:10 pm

#97 tom Mui, you are so right and so classy.

Aaron, being part of a TEAM there are no individual names. I love that Norm Chow is taking this Warrior team back to basics. A TEAM is a group of people. Not one person. Print out the roster online if you HAVE to know a players name. Regarding the haa, it is banned in some stadiums. And another thing, maybe only some of the players want to do the haa? When YOU are the coach you can run the team anyway you want. Until then, it’s Coach Chow’s team.

Gawd, I finally realized the folks who complain the most…bet they don’t even give money, go to games. Support THIS team. If not, go find another team to support.

FIU got into an all out brawl with another FL school known for their outlaw image. I think that was about 5-6 years ago.

One fallout from the game was the color commentor was fired for praising Miami for defending their house.

  142. PowderPuff February 11, 2013 7:23 pm

Forgot to say we had a great time at the Grand Slam Celebration last night…lots of great energy leading into the season opening weekend for the ‘Bows. Lots of grinds with chawan_cut and Midori7. Bid on a UH golf bag, but lost out…but took home a big bottle of Paradigm cabernet. Oh yeah! 🙂

  143. kapakahi February 11, 2013 7:37 pm

According to Iolani coaching friends, Naeole is a great guy with so much knowledge of the game. This move to UH…..has apparently been in the works since mid-January.

  144. cocobean February 11, 2013 7:42 pm

It’s Chow’s team he calls the shots. I’ve had season tix from the beginning. I will say I do miss having the names on the jerseys. Not so much when watching the games live but watching the road games and replays on TV.

I’m not so good at remembering jersey numbers. I need px glasses to watch the game and need reading glasses to read the lineup. Tried using bifocals years back but didn’t like them.

Not complaining but just saying I miss having names on the back.

JMHO that Powell did a good solid job with the available DL…..considering the multitude of season-ending injuries (Friel, Samia, Hanohano, Pu’u-Robinson) last year…..and did a great job with recruiting Utah…..and Northern Cali too.

  147. ai-eee-soos February 11, 2013 8:42 pm

This blurb was found on a national “Coach search” site. Adds more speculation.

Hawaii: Former Colorado and NFL offensive lineman Chris Naeole has joined Norm Chow’s staff at Hawaii.

A source tells me that Naeole will serve as the offensive line coach, while Chris Wiesehan will shift positions.

  148. oldie February 11, 2013 8:48 pm

I don’t know anything about coaching so I stay out of that area. However, there are a few things I wish Coach will change.

    1. Take the max number of players on a road trip. If they work hard in practice, they deserve to go.

    2. Let all the players suit up for home games. Makes them feel more like they’re part of the team.

    3. Substitute when the game is decided. Nothing like having game experience in case they’re needed later.

  152. gobows February 11, 2013 9:59 pm

i think most of Hawaii’s three wide sets were with 2 wide outs and a tight end in the slot position.

Hawaii’s blocking tight end did very little blocking. for the most part Hawaii had 6 guys struggling to block 3 or 4 mediocre defensive linemen. 2nd half of the Air Force game has to be one of the worst offensive outputs in the history of Hawaii football. zero 1st downs.

several times during the season they used Mike Edwards on a fly sweep as a decoy, they should have given him the ball. the few times he did get the ball, it was so far behind the line of scrimmage, he had to make an outstanding athletic effort just to get back to the line of scrimmage. If they gave him the ball on the fly sweep he probably would have averaged 8 or 9 yards per carry.

why was Hawaii’s defense so clueless against the run option? good thing Army and Navy wasn’t on the schedule.

biggest disappointment and mystery about last season was the lack of in-game adjustments both defensively and offensively. didn’t see any coaching of the players on the sidelines during the games.

  153. gobows February 11, 2013 10:52 pm

    #109 Derek

you are right about the Wahine bats…this road trip should tell us if this is a hitting team or not. have you noticed in the last 5 years the Wahine go to the mainland and really pad their stats, but their production at home is not the same, especially against decent pitching.

the amount of swinging of the bats that the Wahine do pre-game at home is outrageous. not even Major League players go through that much swinging of the bats. and these are teenage/twenty year old girls, not big muscular men. the Wahine face live pitching in the cage, they hit the tire, they hit balls against the fence, they hit the whiffle balls, and to pass time before handing in the lineup they are all swinging bats. what they go through would even make baseball players sweat.

and of course I bet they are not doing all that on the road. they probably have to share the batting cage with other teams and have time and field constraints to deal with.

my theory is that when they are on the road they have more pop in their swings because they probably are not doing so much extra pre-game swinging of the bat. whereas at home, these girls are wearing themselves out before the game even starts, so they are probably only getting 85-90% of their bat speed during the games at home. these are young girls that probably can’t even lift their body weight.

bottom line is if the bats don’t explode up in Vegas, Kaia Parnaby will probably have to carry this team.

    the elevation should help too.

    Morning all!

“A source tells me that Naeole will serve as the offensive line coach, while Chris Wiesehan will shift positions.”

The source is probably from this blog.

“several times during the season they used Mike Edwards on a fly sweep as a decoy, they should have given him the ball.”

I think that was Chows infamous wildcat play where Iosefa faked the handoff and took it (power play) up the middle. I do think if Edwards was given the ball on the jet sweep, it would have produced some positive yardage.

Then again, Chow’s thinking is at a whole new level, and to question him would be like arguing the Laws of Gravity with Issac Newton 😉

  171. Papolo_Loco February 12, 2013 4:10 am

Forget about out non-conf. schedule, our schedule in the conference alone this year, it’s gonna be rough. We’ll be lucky to win 3 or 4 games this year and it’s not gonna get better in the years to come. This years recruiting class was great according to UH standards but IMHO it’s not good enough to run this style of Offense. You gotta have 4/5 star players to run this Offense effectively and we got NONE. Now I might be wrong and we start winning conf. championships but I just don’t see us beating BSU, SDST and AFA on a regular basis.

  172. Shoko February 12, 2013 4:28 am

And people wonder why coaches oversign. A coach has to account for players that decide to take a criminal path during their college career.

“A former five-star recruit for the Alabama Crimson Tide was arrested for the second time in two days and was among four freshman who face charges of second-degree robbery or fraudulent use of a credit card stemming from Monday arrests.”

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8939251/dj-pettway-4-alabama-crimson-tide-freshmen-facing-charges

  173. Shoko February 12, 2013 4:36 am

It was a good recruiting class, but I think we should remember that some of these recruits will not pan out (transfer, arrest or academics). However, on the brightside, the ones that come under-the-radar could elevate themselves to be bigtime players.

  174. A-TEAM February 12, 2013 5:17 am

Great choice on hiring an O/L to coach the O/L. He met up with a few of the player after workouts and they (players) really like him. “Once a lineman always a lineman”, they just mesh together.

Maybe the Wahine hit better on the road because our field lights need to improve. hint, hint.

  185. mywebsite February 12, 2013 8:01 am

One thing is the fact that one of the most popular incentives for applying your card is a cash-back or rebate provision. Generally, you get 1-5% back for various purchases. Depending on the cards, you may get 1% in return on most purchases, and 5% in return on expenses made at convenience stores, gas stations, grocery stores plus ‘member merchants’.

  186. PurpleMaple February 12, 2013 8:04 am

Chow lurks the sidelines with his granny glasses and often does not watch the play on the field, instead choosing to communicate with the coaches in the skybox. ST reports Chow will change or at least modify the offensive and defensive schemes. Can’t wait to see what he rolls out. And would be great to see the head coach involved in the game and players on the field.

  187. BigWave96744 February 12, 2013 8:11 am

Just wondering, has there ever been a cattle call on Fat Tuesday?

  188. PolyMom February 12, 2013 8:13 am

tom mui, you ate so right!

Sorry was a little crabby yesterday with a sick kid.

But all Coaches need three years to pull their teams together. I think Chow is trying his hardest. We had a terrific class this year. I wanted to ask, do they all qualify academically and SATs done? Until those requirements are pau, we really don’t know what we got coming in. Does anyone know?

  189. PolyMom February 12, 2013 8:13 am

    are

  190. jimmy the lock February 12, 2013 8:24 am

    Is it spring practice yet?

Man those North Koreans are testy.

  191. jiminy cricket February 12, 2013 8:41 am

#189, sorry Poly Mom, you are just not correct. The great coaches pull their teams together in one year. Last year look at UCLA, New Mexico, Aizona, Penn State, etc all with first year head coaches that stepped into really problem programs and all went to bowl games. Look at JJ in 1999 and Jim Harbaugh in 2011 who in his first year took the 49ers to the NFC championship game. Norm Chow is not in that category, obviously.

Sorry, his first year was one of the worst years of watching UH football since 1978.

Is he a good head coach? This 2nd year will tell. He obviously is trying his hardest. But maybe that is not good enought to cut it.

#183, Chicken Greae. Amen to that.

    the shadow knows…

  193. PONO February 12, 2013 8:45 am

Is ST sleeping in or roaming the lower campus to get us a hot story to chat about here?

  194. seasider February 12, 2013 8:57 am

    #189

UCLA, New Mexico, Arizona, Penn State’s roster was loaded compared to what coach Chow had to work with. LOL…JJ also had more to work with than Chow…that team had a bunch of future NFLers.

And LOL…how can you compare an NFL team with a non BCS program. Harbaugh had the players in place and the $ to buy more.

How about listing all those 1st year coaches at the helm of high maka maka BCS programs that had less wins than Chow’s 1st year.

  195. seasider February 12, 2013 8:58 am

    Oops! s/b 192

  196. maui warrior February 12, 2013 9:00 am

    192.

Those situations you listed were all different(as in pretty good talent in place), what did New Mexico Do? Are you saying that the coaches who took over those teams would do a better job than Norm? Maybe with a year of Head Coaching experience under his belt the team will start progressing, but pretty sure a lot of it had to do with TALENT…..

  197. BG February 12, 2013 9:05 am

    Good morning everyone!

    j. cricket @192. I believe you may be over-reaching in generalizing like that to support your argument. If you go back to nationally recognized “great” coaches in an internet search, you may find that winning in the first season is the exception rather than the rule. There are so many variables to accomplishing that…a favorable schedule, having a quality quarterback, having access to assembling a quality staff…to name a few.

Whether Chow is great or not is great fodder for discussion, but he is what we have (and more importantly) what we can afford. Personally, I wasn’t thrilled with his selection (and the change to the wc offense), but I will reserve judgment until he has a chance to put his stamp on this program. I am optimistic about the recruiting.

  198. primo123 February 12, 2013 9:12 am

    check please?

  199. primo123 February 12, 2013 9:16 am

does anyone notice……the transition from a non-spread offense to a spread offense, generates better results, than going from a roster of spread players to a non-spread, pro set offense?

Alot of the recruits Coach Chow secured, might have never come to UH, if they were still running the spread.

    Ya thinks?!
