Moving along

The Warriors fought the good fight before losing San Mateo’s Fehoko Fanaika to LSU.

That leaves the Warriors with a few options. They are expected to continue to hold a scholarship for Konawaena’s Mike Andrade, who still needs to complete some procedures before he may be tendered a binding letter.

The Warriors most likely will give the remaining scholarships to current walk-ons rather than signing another prospect this semester.

  10. Garret March 16, 2012 8:13 am

It is best to give the offers to walk-ons instead of making offers to recruits that still haven’t been offered to anyone. It is a great reward for upperclassmen walk-ons who have proven themselves on the team, plus that will provide the coaches with more scholarships to offer in the future since those walk-ons will finish their eligibility years before a high school recruit would.

It was a good attempt to get Fanaika and UH came *really* close to getting a SEC-level recruit. These coaches could win those recruiting battles in the future and it would be better for them to have more scholarships in future years than trying to find recruits who still don’t have offers for this year.

  11. Garret March 16, 2012 8:14 am

It sounds like the alliance has ruled out 24 teams and will stop at a smaller number. I think that is good and will dilute things less for UH.

A source told me yesterday that the Alliance has ruled out expanding to 24 teams, and will focus on either 18, 20 or 22. It’s widely assumed that UTEP will be switched from C-USA to the Mountain West group, which makes sense as there are far more viable candidates on the eastern side of the country. With one football-only member in Hawaii, the Alliance will very likely add another in the C-USA division to balance out the league.

Say the Alliance decides to go big at 22. UTEP slides over from C-USA, Utah State and San Jose State are plucked from the WAC, and there’s your Mountain West division comprising 10 full members, plus Hawaii in football only.

    http://blog.mysanantonio.com/utsa/2012/03/your-daily-re-alignment-speculation/

  12. Garret March 16, 2012 8:15 am

Eastern Carolina is pledged to support the alliance.

In February presidents and chancellors from 16 universities, including East Carolina, met to discuss future conference membership plans and agreed to work on forming a presidentially led intercollegiate athletics conference that would begin competition in the 2013-14 academic year. Participating universities include members of Conference USA and the Mountain West conference.

  13. Garret March 16, 2012 8:16 am

Unless ECU gets an invitation to join the Big East, of course…

Ballard and Holland stand in agreement that if the merger plans don’t suit ECU, the school can still opt out of the deal.

“If at any time this looks like it’s not for us or we have a better option or if some of the worst-case scenarios unfold, I’m very confident that we can extract ourself from this new conference with a fairly minimal cost to East Carolina University,” Ballard said.

Smart Football is a nice site to check-in with during the season and a godsend in the off-season!

btw, was there a Spring Football practice schedule posted?

  16. Garret March 16, 2012 8:19 am

    d1shima,

I just saw your question from yesterday. UH does *not* benefit from a WAC team winning in the NCAA tournament, since UH isn’t getting any share of the WAC’s money for this year. UH gave up its WAC revenue for this year as part of leaving for the MWC.

UH doesn’t get any MWC basketball money either because UH is a football-only member.

For all of the conference agreements I’ve read about during realignment, schools joining a conference only get a share of the basketball revenue earned after they joined. So, it is quite feasible that UH won’t get any of the money that the Big West earns this year either.

After this year, UH fans should cheer hard for Big West teams in the tournament, since every win in the NCAA tournament means $1.44 mil more for the conference.

  17. Stephen Tsai March 16, 2012 8:24 am

    d1:

I had a partial spring schedule from Juan, and well …

They practice Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday before taking off a week for spring break. Because they’ll have a meeting in the lecture auditorium first, and that place won’t be available until after classes, the team won’t be on the field until 4:30 p.m., at the earliest.

After the break, the schedule goes Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. The weekend practices will be in the morning, most likely around 10.

  18. Stephen Tsai March 16, 2012 8:26 am

I do like the name “the alliance.”

I somehow envision ADs in a cigar-smoked room saying, “the Hawaii family can promise to control the docks …”

Stephanie was a pit bull with a smiley face last night. It wasnt always pretty as her adversary appeared, but it was an incredible performance. The best most ardent of wahine fans have witnessed from the circle.

The more i hear golden bear fans grouse on the websites about the amount of players they left stranded on the bags (17) to rob Jolene Henderson’s artful display of swag dancing, low-fives and Ks, the more extraordinary Rickett’s accomplishment becomes.

This is a storyline of legend. Casey in the circle against the Berkville nine. Except, this time, it is Stephanie who dishes out the K.

Anyone else would have folded their hand and uttered no mas without protest from Coolen.

    Not our gurl.

Coolen reaffirmed that notion in a post-game interview bite.

And Rickett’s kept her composure and smiley face displayed.

There is no celebration in Berkville today,

the mighty streak has ended for the lady bears…

and in Manoa they rejoice for Stephanie, and that mighty smile she wears.

Kaia has a tryout with the Australian National team starting Tuesday.

I believe he said in a recent SA article that his intentions was to play a year or two more and then retire and coach. He said Coach Karl at Denver has said he will give him a shot at it. He also said being the elder player on the Raptors roster has given him a chance to start his coaching career while still playing ball.

Congratulations to Wahine for great game and Win over No. 1 ranked California yesterday especially to Jessica Iwata on walk off Home-run after given up a go-ahead run on her error. A great come back and recovery. As I was watching Jessica at bat under my breath and saying just hit one over and she did just that was Amazing indeed.

Heanderson was in control and held the Wahine to one hit and 16 KO says a great pitcher that she is.

But our Ricketts was all guts time after time, innings after innings stranding runners on base and never giving up.

    Way to go Wahine!

  111. mikey March 16, 2012 2:37 pm

The game tonight with Texas A&M should be an overflow sold out Mob

Not having great success with my March NCAA Bracket

My South and West is all messed up.

Especially thanks to Missouri knocked off my final 4 selection.

But I was watching Norfolk State and just like the Wahine never giving up

Coming back time after time even with all the offensive calls by the Ref against them.

Two mid-major softball programs could shake up the elite top 10 landscape in next week’s D1A college softball ranking– provided they continue their roll.

Both Louisiana Laffeyete and Hawai’i fed on top ranked teams this week.

The Lady Cajuns feasted defending national champs #5 ASU (26-3), 9-2, while Hawai’i (23-1) broke up No 1/2 California’s (23-1) 23 game win streak and handed the golden bears their first loss of the season, 3-1, on a 10th inning walk-off homerun by Jessica Iwata.

For #10 La Laf, they extended their consecutive win streak to 24.

The wahine are 23-1. The lone loss at the hands of #6 TEXAS.

La Laf is 3-0 against ranked teams this season and the wahine are 5-1.

In other top 10 scores, #8 Georgia fell to unranked Ga Tech. It was the first win by the lady yellow jackets over their in-state rivals since 2008.

A win over #21 Texas A&M tonight will give the wahine a 6-1 record over ranked teams.

And strong consideration for a top 10 selection.

  126. jkjones March 16, 2012 3:58 pm

Stephanie Rickett’s is designated to pitch in four games in the Chevron Tournment.

She is looking at pitching 31 innings in 5 days. Stephanie is at the halfway mark.

That feat could come close to throwing 700-750 pitches….

” The San Francisco 49ers have emerged as a late contender in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes on Friday, according to an ESPN report.

According to ESPN, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman watched Manning throw at Duke on Tuesday night. They were impressed enough to send the team doctor to Duke the next day to conduct a physical on Manning.

The Niners, who have been working diligently to extend quarterback Alex Smith’s contract, could be a sleeper team to sign Manning, who is planning to conduct a private workout for Broncos brass on Friday. ”

    ST… speaking of Dawn…

During my senior year of high school, some of us found ourselves on Waikiki beach one weekend, just cruising along, walking on the sand.

One of my friends sees this cute girl up near the surfboards, talking with this big, muscle-bound dude. He turns to us and says, “Eh, I know that chick!”

About 30 yards away, he starts yelling, “Dawn! Eh, Dawn! What’s up?”

The muscle guy turns around and yells back, “Eh, howzit, Bruddah! Whoa, long time!!!”

We look at our friend and bust out laughing hysterically. “You know Dawn? That wasn’t Dawn. But did you know Don? Hahaha!”

To this day, some 30-something years later, he still gets razzed about it.

  148. Steve March 16, 2012 8:45 pm

The Wahine Softball Team fell flat on their collective faces against Texas A&M. They played worse then they did against Texas. Feel sorry for Stephanie Ricketts, not getting any support from the team. The Wahine made the Texas A&M pitcher look like an elite pitcher, which she is not. Right now the Wahine Softball Team does not deserve to be ranked. The loss to Texas A&M makes the California victory look like it was just a fluke.

  149. Moocher March 16, 2012 8:50 pm

Bummer…what were we led to believe? Or is this a bit of PR from a LSU blogger to to not let the tiger nation know they almost lost out to UH…

Regarding FF, “He was split down the middle with Florida and LSU, as well as looking at Hawaii, but it really came down to Florida and LSU,” Tulloch said. “He went away with his family and came back, and he just said LSU was the right fit.”

Don’t know if it was posted or not before but eh, plenty more big fish in the Pacific 🙂

  150. Steve March 16, 2012 9:24 pm

Texas A&M gave the Wahine their lone run, via a walk, the Wahine did not earn it. If you watch the Wahine batters they are all swinging from their heals, all trying to hit a home run. Whereas, the opposing hitters are just trying to make contact. One reason why the opposing teams have outhit the Wahine, the last few games, and the difference in hits is not even close.

  151. Steve March 16, 2012 9:29 pm

Kevin, you said the Stephanie would be just fine. It did not look so, as the game went along, the more tired she looked. If the Wahine batters do not give Stephanie alot of support tomorrow. It may not be a pleasant picture to look at.

Even the defense was troubling, kicked balls, Iwata having Alex run all the way for a pop up that was just 4 steps behind her, just standing there watching Alex run all the way in for it.

  152. SteveM March 16, 2012 9:45 pm

Coincidental that exactly 5 years ago on the blog, we were discussing cruise ships (as mobile full size football fields) and Bulla recapping the first Camellia Cattle Call. See my comment #65 today regarding his first cruise. Anyway, here’s some post-Cattle Call silliness from back then…

    Comment from: bulla [Visitor]

    to all the Camellia Carnivores,

we are going to take the video camera with us next time so there is no question as to the activities that took place. i think we can mount that camera on uncle Al’s head, but we’d get too dizzy from the up and down motion….and that was only on the first course of the day, haha.

the lady didn’t bump into me, she bounced into me from Kid’s side of the room, kind of like a pinball machine, and Kid and I were the flippers…wait a minute, i thought that Camellias was dolphin safe, gotta check on that….and true, Joe did eat the papa’a meat, but that could have been a flashback from his small kids dayz with bb buns, geckos and a hibachi….yummy.

it was a fun day, i think we’re on the most wanted to not come back list for the day manager, but it wasn’t me pushing the vegetables through the burner.

and Kid, Al, StevenM got their top plate on the grill changed 3 times to our 1 time….move volume on that side of the table…..easy tiger, don’t start swimming over here just yet.

next time we go guys, can StevenM pick us up in a 24 pax van so we can fit in better with the rest of the crowd….haha

    03/16/07 @ 12:36

    Comment from: SteveM [Visitor]

I only have a 7-pax van so I figure can hold 6 if we squeeze and one is the small guy, Al in the middle seats. bulla cannot sit in the front because the window rolls down and his arms can reach out. 🙂 But cannot hold more than 4 until I get the suspension raised and reinforced.

Yeah, 24 pax van should hold around 12 plus driver…who has one?

    03/16/07 @ 13:23

  153. gmahoney March 16, 2012 9:59 pm

Wow, Steve, one bad game and you turn on Na Wahine and especially a courageous player like Kelly Majam! What a great fan you are! Just like the typical Hawaii fan, once they lose, you are on their backs. Re-read your post last night. Where is your encouragement? Aren’t you still proud to be a Wahine fan? I know the girls try their hardest, each and every game. They don’t try to let you down. Don’t claim to be their biggest fan, if you turn on them after a loss. Shame on you!

Na Wahine, don’t listen to Steve. He doesn’t represent the rest of your fans. Win or lose, ladies, continue to represent the University and us. We are proud to be Na Wahine fans! We’ll get them next time, girls! Next!

    Anybody with me?

  154. cocobean March 16, 2012 10:06 pm

#164. Don’t sweat the little things. Steve being Steve that’s all. Seen it before, will see it again from him.

  155. Steve March 16, 2012 10:11 pm

gmahoney, not just one bad game, they also looked bad against Texas. Not only that, if it was not for Kaia, who knows what would have happened against Marist. As batters they are looking very silly, even against just adequate pitchers.

What the girls were doing during their winning streak, they are not doing now. During the streak they were not swinging for the fences, just looking to make contact. Now for some reason, they are swinging from their heals, trying to jack the ball over the fence. You can ask anyone, when a hitter does that nothing good from it.

  156. tommui March 16, 2012 10:11 pm

We are behind you all the way! GO WAHINE!

  157. Steve March 16, 2012 10:14 pm

gmahoney, I am not dishing Kelly Majam, just saying she should not be the leadoff hitter, hitting way below .200. When was the last time you have seen a leadoff hitter hitting well below .200?

  158. Steve March 16, 2012 10:17 pm

When you back the players, you also back the coaches, which would mean, that all of you still believe Dana and Mac should still be coaching their teams.

  159. Steve March 16, 2012 10:18 pm

But then again, alot of you were not backing Dana, or Mac, hmmm, very interesting.

  160. Steve March 16, 2012 10:21 pm

If it was not for Stephanie, or Kaia, this team would be in big trouble.

  161. SteveM March 16, 2012 10:21 pm

Re: my #163 at 9:45 pm

Two comments that preceded Bulla’s above were left out. Restoring it now so complete the scenerio…

    Comment from: WreckinEyez [Visitor]

I really never gave my take on what had happened a Camellia’s.

    Truth be told,

Bulla on the other had had burnt some Kalbi till it was totally papa’a (charred). So he tried to throw it in Joe’s plate to make like it was his fault… So Joe ended up eating it.

SteveM did take a lot of notes. He got our last names, credit card numbers, Pin, High score on Pac-man,…

Some lady bumped into Bulla… How the heck did she do that!?!? Anyways, after five minutes she was finally found and was very embarrassed. She mumbled out something but we couldn’t make it out. Something about back hair and getting hair balls.

Al and I were looking for the flap meat. Apparently they only bring it out for dinner. We were very disappointed. But the company was great.

It was a good day as always with the group. Maybe next time Kid you can get your Ice Cream and Al and I can get our flap meat and sashimi.

    03/16/07 @ 09:15

Comment from: ted domay [Visitor] [FloridaTed]

The Power of one, Gigi, shoots down the project. How about if we make the stadium as a giant floating cruise ship, lots of extra revenue and we could bring our own stadium to road games and actually play a home game. We also could get a new bowl game and bring our own fans with us. I think I’m going to take my medicine now…..

    03/16/07 @ 11:54

Note it wasn’t me who first brought up the football ship idea. 🙂

    Bon Voyage to Bulla!

“Fair Winds and Following Seas” to the late FloridaTed (Ted Domay), Bonafide Tsai-ko!

  162. Steve March 16, 2012 10:25 pm

Texas A&M is the last ranked team the Wahine will play. They had a chance to make a really BIG statement, but they failed to do so. Looks like only one team from the WAC will make the NCAA Tournament, Fresno St. and BYU, are somewhat down this year.

  173. al March 16, 2012 11:43 pm

  174. papajoe2 March 16, 2012 11:45 pm

Reading SteveM’s throw back posts reminds me of the good days that was on this blog. Now because of a few kill joy people or maybe he’s all of the same, its hard to enjoy something that was so good. Rasu, Koamahu, use to post some funny stuff and it really was enjoyable. What I’m trying to say is Steve, stay off the blog. You’re not wanted here.

  175. Stretch March 16, 2012 11:46 pm

Steve – not sure why you waste your time riding the rail of the softball stadium. Your time is better spent at home, especially since the girls are “pretenders”. BUT, since you have nothing else to do, I am sure you will be there at the game. I can see why you like to stand by yourself, you have no choice….

  176. oldtimer808 March 17, 2012 12:09 am

Geez chill out Steve losses happen whether to a ranked team or not ranked. It is not the end of their season for losing to the “last” ranked team. Stephanie was mentally tired and the team missed Parnabe. I think it’s difficult to get up two nights in a row especially after throwing over a 160 pitches. Coach Coolen will get this corrected. Pretty easy to be an arm chair quarterback so let the coaches coach and just support the team win or lose. Life goes on so chill out.

  177. cocobean March 17, 2012 12:09 am

Some going from head cheerleader to head jeer leader. Steve being Steve.

  178. Steve March 17, 2012 12:17 am

Stretch, and for that matter cocobean, I have a choice, at sporting events, be it softball, baseball, basketball, or football, I rather stand.

As for the girls, I still back them, just do not care to much for Coolen and his philosophy of playing one dimentional offense, which is the long ball. No team has ever won a National Championship that way. You win National Championships with Pitching, Defense, and doing the little things like, bunting, and getting timely hitting. Thought he had changed his ways, cause the girls were doing that during their 21 game win streak, but somehow, it is back to the same thing, which is long ball.

  179. PowderPuff March 17, 2012 12:18 am

Would these “magnificent girls” from #68 be the same “pretenders” from #173?!? What a miserable existence you must have, Steve. Go to lunch on Tuesday.

  180. Steve March 17, 2012 12:19 am

oldtimer808, I have nothing against Stephanie, she pitched her heart out, again, and will against Winthrop. Just that Coolen’s philosophy of the long ball, will get in her way again.

  181. jm2375 March 17, 2012 12:22 am

    Howzit.

Back late from the vb game. Great game, but bad outcome. The place was rocking at the end of the 4th game and thru the 5th game. Tomorrow’s another day and the Warriors WILL PREVAIL!!!

We provided part of the post-game meal to the boys tonight. The boys got a taste of the bp. Tomorrow is the last Warrior booster club potluck of the season. The boys are so appreciative of what the booster club does for them. I encourage everyone to join and participate. You’ll get more out of it than what you put in.

Welcome to the world, Makena Podlewski. Hope we see you in a Warrior uniform in about 18 years. 😀

  182. PowderPuff March 17, 2012 12:37 am

Nice jm2375…good bunch of guys who played with guts in 4 and 5 tonight. Too bad about the end….we need to get a new generation of VB refs.

  183. Steve March 17, 2012 12:37 am

PowderPuff, thinking about it more, it is not so much the girls fault, it is more the fault of Coolen, and his philosophy of the long ball. Does he even teach the girls how to bunt, cause it seems only one girl can bunt with any consistency, that is Dara. If you watch the girls swing the bat, they are all swinging from their heals, going for the home run. I am not the only one saying that. Alot of people are seeing and saying that to. It seems Coolen is more concerned about picking up rubbish, then he is about teaching the girls. So with that said, I do not blame the girls. For it is a lack of coaching.

  184. PowderPuff March 17, 2012 12:51 am

Criticizing officials on collegiate and pro levels – YES; criticize collegiate players – NO; name-calling, especially in a public forum like a newspaper blog – NO.
