Mouton plans to run at combine

Despite suffering a slight hamstring problem in East-West Shrine Game, Ryan Mouton believes he is healthy enough to compete in the 40-yard dash Tuesday.
Mouton and David Veikune arrive at the NFL Scouting Combine tomorrow. The defensive ends are scheduled to run the 40-yard dash Sunday. The DBs will run on Tuesday.
Mouton, who now weighs 187 pounds, is aiming for a 40-inch vertical jump and a 40-yard time in the low 4.4s.

Twenty-something years and 50-something pounds ago, my vertical jump was around 36 inches. With my height, I could almost dunk a basketball – on an eight foot basket (like the kind at elementary schools).

Article about how South Dakota isn’t surprised that some school hired Coach Shaw away from them.

“We knew this could happen when we hired him,” USD coach Ed Meierkort said. “We’re talking about one of the premier offensive line coaches in the country. He’s going to double his salary, get a condo on Waikiki – I guess you have to go when that’s the offer. We’re going to miss him as a coach and as a friend. He’s a good person.”

  16. Garret February 19, 2009 10:33 am

Article about how the tough economy is forcing colleges to cut back on athletic department spending…the article mentions how UH probably won’t be hosting WAC championships after this year. I would love for the WAC to have their conference tournaments in Vegas instead of Reno or other WAC cities.

Miami will bus to South Florida and Central Florida for football games this fall rather than fly about 200 miles to each school.

“People who would have never considered busing,” Cleary says, “are considering it now.”

The Western Athletic Conference can’t do that for this spring’s tennis and baseball tournaments — in Hawaii.

“We feel like all our members should get to host WAC championships, but talk about bad timing,” WAC Commissioner Karl Benson says. “We are in serious talks now to move future championships to more geographically friendly locations.”

Under discussion are Phoenix and Las Vegas, which he points out have comparatively cheap flights and hotels and no WAC member schools.

  17. Jason February 19, 2009 10:33 am

Those measurables will be huge for Mouton, I hope he does well. Teams didn’t throw to him, so film is kinda scarce, hence the lack of attention. A good time, a good vertical, and good drills (they will want to gauge his ability to read routes in man and zone, and how quickly he breaks) can lead to a very fast ascent on draft boards.

  18. Garret February 19, 2009 10:35 am

I haven’t seen anyone mention the ESPN 1420 Magazine article on UH recruiting, and I couldn’t find the article online, so I typed the quotes (not the whole article because I didn’t want to violate copyright issues) from the article up to preserve the information. Some of these quotes provide great information from Rich Miano.

Asked what makes a great recruiter, Miano said:
“Certain people can sell, no matter what they’re selling. Those guys are big-time recruiters because they can sell the product. Other guys can sell only if they really believe in the product, and I think I come across as one of those guys. I graduated from the University of Hawaii, I played for the University of Hawaii, and I live in the state of Hawaii. I’m very passionate about Hawaii and what I do. In the end, it’s like any other job: The more you put into it, the more you get out of it.” (1420)

  19. Garret February 19, 2009 10:36 am

Another good one, which makes the point that the local recruits often give back to the communities they are from.

About how he loves seeing players take their Senior Walk and get their degrees, Miano said:
“The most satisfying thing is seeing them walking the “Senior Walk” and seeing them get their diplomas. We get to see them grow from 18-year-old kids into young men, and hopefully we’ve taught them about punctuality, teamwork, resiliency and perseverance. A lot of these kids, they’re going to go back into our community, and they’re going to be able to help their community, be good people and make Hawaii a better place.” (1420)

  20. Garret February 19, 2009 10:37 am

Other schools are definitely getting more aggressive in recruiting!

About how teams are getting more aggressive in their recruiting now, Miano said:
“I think it’s much more aggressive. A lot of schools will over-offer, giving more scholarships than they have. Even after kids make verbal commitments to you, other schools will continue to recruit them, hoping to change their minds with very aggressive tactics. They’ll almost circumvent the rules. If the rule says you can’t attend practice, they’ll go in before practice starts. They’re doing everything and anything to survive and provide for their livelihood. It’s a very aggressive game where one big recruit can make a difference.” (1420)

  21. Garret February 19, 2009 10:37 am

Funny story about how UH discovered its starting QB.

About how he discovered Greg Alexander, UH associate head football coach Rich Miano said:
“We were looking high and dry for quarterbacks. There’s a book listing all the junior colleges, and I just cold-called [Santa Rosa J.C.] out of the book. I said, ‘Hey, do you have a quarterback?’ And they said, ‘Do we have a quarterback? He threw 71 touchdowns and broke the national record, and nobody’s recruiting him!’ It was like a financial advisor or insurance person sitting at a desk, cold-calling people. Nick Rolovich and Ron Lee did a great job following up with [Alexander], but it all started with a cold call.” (1420)

The state of Florida has huge budget problems…and Orange County (which includes Orlando) is looking at cutting high school sports!

Freshman sports and other popular athletic programs could disappear as Orange County’s public-school leaders seek ways to deeply slice and dice the district’s budget for next year.

The district is seriously considering doing away with all freshman sports, some junior-varsity teams and two varsity coaches to save at least $341,315. The list of targeted teams was not available Tuesday.

That proposal is not final, and a blueprint toward trimming back programs won’t be known for months. But board members made it clear that some kind of reduction in sports was likely to happen.

The board could have considered a proposal to whittle the entire $7.3 million sports program by cutting money for all equipment, coaches and other expenditures at each grade level.

That would have meant every school at every level — or more than 20,000 students — could have lost after-school athletic programs, including Special Olympics and programs for the disabled in elementary schools.

For those that missed homey’s bio…..

“Homey’s profile: Short, late 40s, played sports in high school, went to UH (yes, I actually went there and graduated with, of all things, a BS degree), originally from Waipahu and now residing in Mililani, married w/3 kids, drive a gas guzzler (damn ethanol blend), have never voted in my life, favorite beer is Guinness, don’t shave on weekends, use weed killer instead of pulling the weeds, have 2 mean-looking dogs and 2 mean-looking guinea pigs and 3 mean-looking turtles, eat all kinds of food, weigh less than 200 pounds so I don’t qualify for large Tsaiko status, surfing and golf are lost passions, and that’s about it.”

This was me a few years ago….. 🙂

Except for the guinea pigs and turtles…..

    Coach Zorn at the Combine:

“On if he is familiar with all the players available in the draft and free agency:

“The only thing I’m getting up to speed with is really the college guys because we’ve had to evaluate our own, we’ve had to evaluate the free agents, and now, I’m going a hundred miles an hour on these college guys. Right now, today, it was kickers, punters, it was long snappers, it was tight ends and o-line. I’ve done some surface stuff before I got here, but it was all surface. It was just trying to get an overview. This is great time for me because it allows me to dig deep and get further in to these players that are here.”

Pfffftttttt………. HA! Shows what Vegas knows! 😆

    Final score – UH 68 FSU 52.

    Follow-up prediction:

In a few days we will hear about an internet article in which some “poor old Fresno fan” was assaulted by a “Samoan” man and was seen with other “Samoan” people spitting on Fresno State fans while the Bulldog faithfull are reading the bible and busy donating to charity while helping old ladies walk across the street…

(God I hate them. Aloha Stadium will be fun this season….)

    Al,

Yeah I remembered hearing it from Coach Trap on the Rob and Russ show either this week or last week.

If I didn’t hear about it I would have been real disappointed this weekend and I would have marched up to the box to call Papa Leahey a “liar”!!!

But either way it’s good to have such a nice looking facility on campus. It’s the “jewel” of UH Manoa Athletics in terms of a facility, but hopefully sooner than later the Ching Complex will take that title.

Had a great time at the cattle call. I SO wanted to sleep in class today. My friend even offered me his energy drink, haha. I’m still partial to Todai, but Tsukiji was pretty good. Spacious, albeit very busy today with that large group.

Shave ice is nice, but I still prefer having crêpes.

I don’t care what color night it is, I just want the UHAD to settle on one color for all sports and ask fans to always wear the color to all games…it would be awesome if everyone wore green to all UH sports…imaging seeing the stands filled with green only

  147. Jason February 19, 2009 5:34 pm

Ralph: Geez, you’ve been grumpy lately. UH always advocates UH green, but sometimes they do these color things to mix things up. Unfortunately, not all the fans get the message — or choose to ignore it.

    Re: Tonight’s Basketball Game

The optimistic side of me says the team should just try their best to keep on winning conference matchups to try and improve their seeding for the WAC Tournament, but the ‘realistic’ side of me says that taking all of the other conference teams into consideration, I don’t think they’ll move up much further…..heck they could probably drop a spot if things go south.

    Hey, I want tickets.

First of all, Happy Birthday to CRW and truegreen and 808chef(?) !!!

    Welcome home 808chef!!

Had a great time at the cc today. Food is overrated and overpriced. Still think Makino is better, never been to Todai. Anyone been to Hanaki (Manoa Mktplace) recently? Is it worth a cc there?

Good luck to the Warriors at the combine.

Good luck to the bball team tonight. The game Sat night is NOT being televised.

  153. Kazz February 19, 2009 5:57 pm

With another big weekend of UH promotions, I just want to take this time to THANK JIM DONOVAN AND HIS STAFF!!!

For 17.00 (8.00 MAX at Les Murakami then 9.00 at the Stanley by showing your stub from baseball) you can spend ALL Saturday at UH taking in up to three games (dbl header for baseball and a basketball game).

My estimations on my spending this Saturday:

    3.00 for parking
6.00 for the second game of the double header
5.00 for a chili frank plate at Les Murakami
    1.85 for a soda
    4.00 for an Italian Ice
    9.00 for the basketball game
    5.40 for bumbucha nachos
    1.85 for a soda

TOTAL – $36.10 for about six hours of sporting events.

Last year it would have been:

    3.00 for parking
    7.00 for baseball double header
    5.00 for chili frank plate
    3.50 for italian ice
    2.50 for soda
    22.00 for basketball game
    6.75 for bumbucha nachos
    2.50 for soda

    Total in Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 – $52.25.

    .
    .
    .
    THANK YOU JIM DONOVAN!!!!!!!!

Honestly speaking. Almost EVERY UH home basketball game has had some sort of promotion to get half off the upper level seats. Of the 12 games I’ve been to I can’t remember the last time I paid full price for upper level seats. Maybe the home opener but that’s about it.

I expect to see this trend continue through next season.

  154. wafan February 19, 2009 5:58 pm

Kind of reminds me of the suit by the Mexican government demanding the US put water stations in Arizona because so many illegals were dying in the desert.

According to the ticker, the UH-Fresno State game can be seen on ESPN360.com as well, if you don’t have access to a TV with ESPN2, and if you have ESPN360.com access (not every ISP supports this — Oceanic Time-Warner does not).

Two words for MBB: tip drill

  161. d1島 February 19, 2009 6:25 pm

    jmxxx,

It was great seeing you today!
IIRC one of the last times I was at a CC at Makino there was kind of a huhu by an asst. mgr about how long we had the table.

Usually at Hanaki, I get the same kind of “rushed” feeling.

With the usual “wala’au time” at the CC’s, dat’s not a real good ting….

    JMHO 🙂

As far as Tsukiji, it is higher priced but the fresh tempura (I think some may have noticed that I really like that!) and the made-to-order udon add value for me.

  162. d1島 February 19, 2009 6:27 pm

…besides, as far as value goes, I have no idea why al is even thinking about dinner! I still full!

…maybe beau could use a walk at halftime. 😉

  169. SteveM February 19, 2009 6:40 pm

d1島 — As I recall, we never had a problem with how long we had the tables at Makino Chaya. The problem has always been that they expect X number of use to fit in the same number of chairs and spacing designed for 100 lb Japanese tourists.

We need Tsai-ko sizing and Al and I have had many arguments with managers about this in the early days. We learned to ask Pride. with his winning smile to negotiate more space with the manager — charms ’em every time! 🙂

  170. d1島 February 19, 2009 6:44 pm

    SteveM,

    I stand corrected.
It seemed like the issue was time because I caught wind of it towards the end of our visit; besides being more interested in “other things” earlier 😉

  171. Rob25 February 19, 2009 6:46 pm

    I want tickets!

I also want the BB team to spend a lot more time on free throw practice. Geez!!

I like Tsukiji’s better than Makino because of the ramen, tempura, and the fresher looking sushi. JMHO also.. Great company as always!

  172. d1島 February 19, 2009 6:47 pm

  192. Rob25 February 19, 2009 8:02 pm

d1 – Frank was chatting with me before I left the office and said that it sucks that he misses all the CCs and KKs. I told him there’s going to be plenty of opportunity for that when he gets home.

I thought that was a foul on Nitoto as he was driving towards the basket!

Pride – I can give birth in two hours…does that count for anything? Guess it wouldn’t be in the Tsaiko combine.

Happy B Day Committed Road Warrior. Love the name.
Belated B Day wishes to you too, TrueGreen.

Very good win by the BBT.

Road win, any road win, is always great. No play-in game, that’s a nice bonus for their effort.

Reading your reactions — geez, was I the only one confident that they were going to win? This is a different team from the beginning of the year. They’ve grown so tremendously, and they are continuing to grow. I love the maturity, composure, and confidence in their play. They’ve always been talented players, but they needed to develop those three traits in order to win. The pieces are coming together quite nicely … 🙂

That said, I hope they don’t run out of gas down the stretch …

  215. FloridaTed February 19, 2009 8:21 pm

Outstanding free throw shooting tonight, that was the difference.

  217. chawan_cut February 19, 2009 8:23 pm

I’m glad they held it all together for 40 mins. They learned how much it hurt last week. Glad we could fight back every time they did.
Free throws and fouls were uneven, but we let them get inside too much and were swiping for bad fouls.
Whew…. I can sleep good tonight finally.

  218. FloridaTed February 19, 2009 8:24 pm

We need two consistent long range shooters and this team would be something…., maybe next year.

Looks like I will go undrafted…

  221. Garret February 19, 2009 8:33 pm

NFL Draft Scout has Veikune as the #10 DE in the draft. Jake Ingram is the #1 long snapper in the draft. Ryan Mouton isn’t listed among the top 19 CBs, but that can change depending on the combine workouts.

  222. Garret February 19, 2009 8:35 pm

Mouton’s running backwards test will be critical for his draft position. Interesting that if a player runs backwards slowly they disregard his fast 40-yard time.

One of the most critical drills for defensive backs is the backpedal drill. It requires each player to backpedal 10 yards, turn, then sprint another 20 in the same direction.

“You will see more stop watches being pulled out on that drill than you’ll see on the 40 itself,” Bommarito said. “What most people have told me is you have to do that drill in equal or less time than your 40 or they will discount your 40 no matter how fast it is.”

  223. Garret February 19, 2009 8:35 pm

The broad jump will also be important for Mouton and Veikune.

The most telling drill for all draft prospects outside of the 40, which measures a player’s straight-line speed, is said to be the broad jump.

The drill is an indicator of lower-body strength, needed to drive an opponent backward.

“It’s probably the most specific drill because [it stresses] horizontal power and that’s mainly what football is all about,” said one NFC personnel executive. “That’s why you see the best athletes always jump the farthest in that drill.”

  224. Garret February 19, 2009 8:36 pm

    Happy belated Birthday Truegreen!

Mike Leach and Texas Tech’s AD really don’t get along…so Texas Tech’s Chancellor met with him without the AD around and they quickly agreed on Leach’s contract extension.

All it took was a simple talk between Texas Tech football coach
Mike Leach and chancellor Kent Hance to hammer out one of the most contentious contract negotiations in Red Raiders history.

Leach said he doesn’t know if the contract would have been finalized without Hance agreeing to meet him alone Thursday. Hance said they met for about three hours, but contract talks only lasted 10-15 minutes.

…and pretty crazy criteria at that!

Al — # 2, when we witnessed that at the BIG Karaoke Call, we were all too stunned to take pix. But you know, what happens at a K-call stays at the K-Call … unless you have a phone, camera, or camcorder…. 😐

BTW, admission is free but there is a “duty” on audio and video devices brought in this Saturday. $5 for audio recorders, $10 for cameras and $15 for camcorders. Proceeds go to funding the next K-Call.

  253. Garret February 19, 2009 10:29 pm

    d1shima,

Yes, I think you were the one who was wondering if they timed DBs running backwards. I didn’t realize that they threw out the 40-yard time if the DB couldn’t run backwards fast enough!

Miami’s head coach confirmed that they will draft or sign a center and Samson will have to compete for his spot on the Dolphins.

He also made it very clear starting center Samson Satele is going to be in for a battle for the starting center job — especially when the Dolphins sign or draft his replacement.

    Q. What is Samson Satele’s status and will he be your starting center?

    A. Samson’s obviously a member of our football team right now. Whether or not he’s our starting center?
One of the things I think everyone of our players know on my team is that there’s going to be competition at every position always. We feel that makes us better.

Welcome to Hawaii Chris Tormey! welcome welcome. help us beat everybody this year!

    ST
great article in the HA. but hard to find the sports page when you google honolulu advertise. its missing on the cover page.

anyway, it really looks like Chris Tormey is a good hire. i mean, the Hawaii recruiter for udub the last several years, former head coach at Idaho and Nevada. knows a lot of the high school coaches in Hawaii. defensive coordinator at udub for along time too. As a head coach, Tormey said he devoted much of his attention to defense and special teams. we need somebody who knows what they’re doing, they can rub off on our other guyz.

is it just me? I’m getting the feeling that Coach Mack ain’t going to be the congeniality contest winner. He’s looking to win and i’m loving it!

  280. bighilofan2 February 20, 2009 4:57 am

i meant EXCELLENT hire and should have said it that way.
We got lucky with both Shaw and Torney. Thank you Sarkisian.
For awhile there, i was miffed at Torney for poachin Teo-Neishem outta Hawaii Prep a few years back. T-N was the bugga terrorizing Colt in the UDub game 2 years ago at Aloha Stadium.

  281. ChrisInSeattle February 20, 2009 5:01 am

From a current Washington student who grew up attending UH football games (season tickets since I was born :p), Tormey is a great hire. He was the best recruiter on the old staff here. I think you will all enjoy him being around.

  282. bighilofan2 February 20, 2009 5:03 am

Coach Mack is reteaching me the meaning of the word Patience. He’ll be gone in 4 years. Lets go along for the ride, full of hope. I just wish we neva sign up Central Arkansas for the first game. they get turmoil, sounds like.

  283. bighilofan2 February 20, 2009 5:13 am

    Thanks for the affirmation ChrisinSeattle.

    Jimmy Donovan,

howzit howzit. Now you gotta set higher sights for Coach Mack, and don’t get distraughted by the virus e-bolla. i think of da women’s basketball team this way. what are the girls’ inputs? is Marilyn saying anything?

look at how much $$ wbb is wasting. I mean, Bolla’s crowds can’t even pay the electricity bill. pathetic. and i mean his crowds. the people who turn out gotta all be related to the players and coaches. if i attended a few games, i’d probably know all the fans by name, get so few. i know 2 regular attendeez. tsaikos. gotta be nawtz. 😀 or they go to look at the chicks. 😆

  284. bighilofan2 February 20, 2009 5:24 am

    Mr. Donovan,
    Mr. Nash,

watching UH at Fresno last nite, seeing the big BOWS on their jerseys, listening to the announcers calling them WARRIORS, I wuz all confused.
