Moniz wins WAC award

mo

May I ask you about being named player of the week?

Bryant Moniz: “The player of the week? For our team?”

The WAC. The WAC player of the week.

Moniz: “For the WAC? Daaa-yam. That’s pretty cool.”

When was the last time you won a player of the week award?

Moniz: “Uh, never.”

Not OIA player of the week, or something like that?

Moniz: “I don’t think so. That’s pretty cool. It’s a team award. But it’s pretty cool.”

* * * * *

Moniz was selected the WAC’s Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Warriors to a 31-28 victory over Army Saturday.

Moniz, who was placed on scholarship last month, was 25 of 36 for 343 yards and three touchdowns. He completed two key passes during the final drive that set up Scott Enos’ winning field goal.

• David Graves, a quarterback who will practice as a safety this week, arrived this morning. He participated in the weight-lifting session this afternoon.

• Graves is the injury replacement for strong safety Spencer Smith, who is scheduled to undergo surgery today. He suffered a fractured right forearm when he fell awkwardly Saturday. Smith is expected to miss between six and eight games.

For amusement purposes only, Colorado is favored by 10, according to our hotel’s sports book. Oh, wait. We’re in Vegas. Don’t need the disclaimer.

* * * * *

It’s an interesting set-up at the hotel. If you take the elevator to the second floor, it leads to the back entrance of the conference rooms. The front side, where the video-poker machines are located, is locked. Players are fed in the conference rooms. To go to the local high school for weight-training and practices, the players go through a back exit, where the buses await. By blocking off the access areas, the players don’t ever get to see the casino. Coach McMackin has the players on lockdown, and while Vegas might raise concerns, the setup is very good in sequestering the team.

* * * * *

Former UH linebacker Brashton Satele dropped by to see the team last night. He had a nice chat with coach McMackin.

* * * * *

Another former UH linebacker, Blaze Soares, texted to say he might attend the Colorado game. He has some football- and MMA-related options he is exploring this week.

* * * * *

There’s a sign in the hotel that says on Senior Tuesday, those 50 and older can get a movie ticket for $4. I was excited. My first senior moment. That’s when I realized I was having a senior moment. I thought today was Tuesday.

Congrats to Moniz and the Warriors! Anytime an individual wins an award, it’s a team effort that got them there. I’m sure Moniz would agree.

    Buffaloes report: Strategy and personnel

    The Sports Xchange

    Sep. 13, 2010

Strategy and personnel · Notes, quotes · Inside slant

    LOOKING GOOD

Tough to answer this one. Colorado’s defense was at least respectable in the 52-7 loss at Cal. The Buffs were put in some poor situations with the Bears able to work on short fields, or simply convert turnovers into touchdown returns. Still, no unit provided a winning effort. By the end, the Buffs had wilted defensively, allowing 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

    STILL NEEDS WORK

Although Colorado provided RB Rodney Stewart enough opportunities with 29 carries, he only managed 78 yards rushing as the Buffaloes continue to struggle on the ground. An experienced line, coupled with a more versatile attack, figured to open room for Stewart and the CU rushers. So far, however, he’s been ineffective and the Buffs have not dramatically improved a rushing attack that ranked 113th nationally last season. The 29 attempts were the second most for Stewart during the junior’s career at Colorado.

    ROSTER REPORT

–RB Matt Bahr, a converted offensive lineman, suffered a sprained knee at Cal. Bahr made his first career reception, a 3-yard gain, after he was inserted as a utility back.

–QB Tyler Hansen hyperextended his knee on a 4-yard keeper for Colorado’s only touchdown. He returned to the game, then threw his third interception.

–S Travis Sandersfeld sprained an ankle and was scheduled for further evaluation. He was one of three Buffs who received their first career starts, joining TE Luke Walters and WR Travon Patterson.

Have to catch Moniz before that, or else it gets fuzzy on the rest of the schedule.

Congrat to Moniz, nice to see award being given to WAC member and not to a soon to be …..

Lots of the comments refers to the amount to time our D spent on the field and it didn’t appear to me that they rolled-over physically compared to last year when tired. Still had the mental iron.

I’d like to acknowledge our new S&C Coach Heffernan did a suburb job with the players over the summer on their conditioning compared to last year players condition?

Wonder if ST and other SA writers staying at Sun Coast too?

  23. Michigan Warrior September 13, 2010 6:46 am

I agree… let’s not let the game be decided in the waning seconds with a field goal. Let’s come out strong and maintain it to the end.

Like I said in a previous post… Colorado tried to get their running game going. They just got stuffed over and over. They’re looking at our stats, and their Backs are salivating at the possibilities of having a breakout game against us. We need to close that door! Gotta also watch for play-action and not get burned by their Tight End.

This is a huge game for us! We got Charleston Southern next, while they got Georgia. We need to be on a roll going into our conference schedule.

  24. Garret September 13, 2010 6:46 am

Congratulations to Bryant Moniz for his well-deserved honor. This is probably the first of many such awards that he will get this season.

  25. Garret September 13, 2010 6:49 am

The Daily Camera (Boulder, CO newspaper) really tore into Colorado.

The Buffs were a) humiliated; B) embarrassed; c) outclassed, outplayed and outcoached; or d) all of the above.

The answer is obvious. That`s “d” as in dreadful — especially in light of what was supposed to be a new, improved version of the Buffs.

Saturday was a whole new level of ugly, even for the Dan Hawkins era, and it immediately reopened the questions surrounding the head coach`s future.

Once again, this is a season and a program on the brink. It means CU`s administration must now be on alert. From president Bruce Benson on down, CU officials must seriously begin the process of deciding where this program goes next. They must have a plan in place and be ready to execute it at the first prudent moment if this season continues down the road the Buffs traveled on Saturday.

  26. Garret September 13, 2010 6:52 am

Nice feature article on Colorado assistant coach Brian Cabral.

For many young Hawaiian males, Cabral inspires hope as they attempt to use football to realize their dreams.

“I`m an island guy that left the island to go to college. I`m an island guy that went on to the NFL,” Cabral said. “I`m a kid that grew up on the beach and ultimately got to where every football player wants to get to.”

The series means a lot to Cabral, who has always recruited his home state very well and coached some great players from Hawaii, including recent Buff standout Jordon Dizon. The All-American linebacker, who is now a member of the Detroit Lions, used to say hisNo. 1 motivation at CU was “not to disappoint my (position) coach.”

  27. d1島 September 13, 2010 6:53 am

  28. Garret September 13, 2010 6:53 am

Cabral talked about recruiting players from Hawaii.

“Football on the islands is bigger than life. High school football, Pop Warner football, it`s big. It`s a very physical culture and that`s why they love the game of football. …

“We`ve brought the right guys to CU. They`re physical players, they love contact, they love the game. That`s why you recruit Polynesian kids, that`s why you recruit Hawaii.”

Temp off strip on westside is presently 80 with high around 90.

Strip temp forecasted for high today is around 99. Rest of the week

fore cast for just under 100 for high and lows in 70’s.

Location of the casino/hotel and HS where team should be practising is

approx. 6-8 deg. cooler than strip wx reports.

Also altitude is approx. 3000ft plus above sea level compared to strip at about 2100ft.

Hope the altitude here helps our team adjust for Colorado altitude.

Thats what Coach Mack told me when I talked to him before the WAC Preview last month.

Hope players take their aspirins before their flight to Denver to help with altitude head-aches.

  31. gigi-hawaii September 13, 2010 6:55 am

    Garret,

It puzzles me why Hawkins was so successful at Boise, but is so abysmal at Colorado. And Boise continues to be successful even with a different coach.

  35. Michigan Warrior September 13, 2010 7:10 am

#31… gigi-hawaii… I think it’s the culture of winning that carries over. New coaches at Boise just slide in and don’t make any major changes, it seems. They just keep that machine rolling. If we can develop that attitude and atmosphere here, doors will open for us. We won’t have to knock three times…

  36. Stephen Tsai September 13, 2010 7:10 am

Gigi: I think in the WAC, with most things being equal, a lot of hard work can go a long way.

In the Big 12, the depth of talent is much better. The NFL draft shows that the WAC has a lot of talented players. But Big 12 programs, with bigger budgets, have more talented players.

One other thing: Hawkins doesn’t have Chris Petersen running his offense, anymore.

  37. Michigan Warrior September 13, 2010 7:11 am

702WF… good luck with those slots! Ring those bells!!!

  38. Garret September 13, 2010 7:12 am

    gigi,

Petersen was the offensive coordinator for BSU when Hawkins was the head coach and has done an excellent job of continually upgrading their program as their head coach. BSU also pays their assistant coaches well and rarely has lost coaches to bigger-budget programs. They did lose their defensive coordinator last year to a big-budget school, but ended up hiring Cal’s defensive coordinator to be one of their defensive coaches to replace the open spot on the coaching staff.

  39. Garret September 13, 2010 7:14 am

Interesting to read about the players from Hawaii that chose to play for Colorado.

“In high school, I did start following the Warriors,” said CU offensive lineman Sione Tau, who is from Honolulu. “The Warriors have been doing a lot of good things, so I`m pretty excited about the game, it`s going to be awesome. First of all, to play against friends and old rivals from high school will make it a pretty exciting game. I`ve also heard lot of people from Hawaii are coming in for the game.”

“For me and some of the guys from there, it`s exciting. Back when I was home for the summer I was laughing because when I left I didn`t think I`d ever play against anybody from home or anybody that I knew. It`s going to be an exciting event for both teams,” said Beatty, a senior from Kaawa, Hawaii. “I never really got into Hawaii football. When I went to high school I knew teammates and guys I competed against who went there, but I really never became a fan. But Hawaii football for the state is always a good thing. There are no professional sports out there, so that`s what they always have to look forward to.”

  40. Michigan Warrior September 13, 2010 7:16 am

When we believe we can win every game, we somehow create opportunities to win. That attitude was prevalent in 07. You feel it with Boise. We feel it once in a while with our Warriors… we just need to keep that button permanently on.

  41. chawan_cut September 13, 2010 7:24 am

that’s pretty good since i just saw that nevada’s kapernick went crazy on colorado state’s defense. although that might be more CSU and less reno. so does that diminish CU’s win over CSU 2 weeks ago? because CU looked bad against UC-Berkeley on Sat.

  42. Stephen Tsai September 13, 2010 7:24 am

There definitely has been a good vibe around the team since the USC game.

I know everybody preaches against moral victories, but there were enough good things to come out of that game, that it appeared to give the Warriors confidence entering the Army. It also helped that UH did well against Navy last year. Visual and historical success are great confidence boosts.

  43. chawan_cut September 13, 2010 7:27 am

luckily for boise, peterson loves it there, otherwise it would really be blue in that city.

Nice of Moniz to call it a team award. Gotta give the O-line credit. And the recievers. And the RBs.

I think Moniz will see this award again before the season’s pau.

  46. kdub808 September 13, 2010 7:35 am

Can you ask Coach Mack, why he didn’t ask the refs to put more time on the clock after the fumble? The fumble occured with more than 50 seconds on the clock and was kept running before they reviewed the play and stopped the clock at 24 seconds.

  47. Stephen Tsai September 13, 2010 7:36 am

It is true that a team does bond on the road.

It’s good to see players from different backgrounds hanging out together.

  48. 99club September 13, 2010 7:37 am

ST- #42, I sensed while watching them during and after the USC game that they feel they can score on anybody, and in a hurry.

  49. Michigan Warrior September 13, 2010 7:37 am

#42… ST… right now, it feels like everyone is riding this wave. This ride has just started. As early as this season is, this next game feels like it might determine how far we really go. Maybe also because it’s a BCS school? I don’t know. It’s up to this team, how far they want to go. They gotta want it, every single week.

  50. CoolEthan September 13, 2010 7:42 am

Any way to get word to the coaches to clear Huen for letting him open field tackle Ralphie the Buffalo when it runs the down the field before kickoff?

  51. Da Punchbowl Kid September 13, 2010 7:42 am

What’s nice about this team is that they have “humble” swagger. They keep fighting and have confidence in each other.

  52. Stephen Tsai September 13, 2010 7:43 am

    Kdub808:

Coach Mack said he was arguing for 18 seconds to be put back on the clock. That’s why he was on the field talking to the refs. He acknowledged that it appeared he was on the field because of the review, but he said it was the officials who ordered the review.

He said the white-cap ref told him to go back to the sideline, that the time would be put back on the clock. But when Mack got back there, the time wasn’t restored.

  53. Stephen Tsai September 13, 2010 7:47 am

    CoolEthan:

    LOL.

Actually, Heun said last night that he wanted to go back to fullback for one play, “just one play.” I guess when you’re a back, you get to choose who to hit.

You know, I was talking to him for about 10 minutes, and I felt like tackling somebody. Then again, bespectacled 50-year-old guys with third-trimester builds shouldn’t try to tackle anybody.

  54. Stephen Tsai September 13, 2010 7:48 am

I’ll be back in a bit. I have to hunt down Derek Inouchi.

  55. Robin September 13, 2010 7:56 am

    QUESTION OUT THERE:

How does UH football justify the flight and time spent in Vegas? It’s not driving distance to the next game. It’s not near the same elevation as Boulder (acclimation reasons). Josh Pacheco said its “Hawaii’s home away from home” and speculated about access to area high school football fields to practice. That first part is NO adequate justification. Second part- find it hard to believe that Hawaii couldn’t have made arrange to find practice fields in Colorado. Denver is a MAJOR HUB, I’m sure there are tons of flights from New York City to Denver. Did they get free or very cheap accommodations that would make up for the additional flight they will have to pay for to go from Vegas to Denver? Curious. After all, would a State employee who had a conference in New York City and several days later in Denver, be able to make a “waiting out” side trip to Vegas on the taxpayers dime?

The PLANT Campaign would have provided 1,000 trees for community volunteers all across O`ahu to plant between 1 pm & 4 pm on 10/10/10 as part of its much larger commitment made last November to provide one tree for every person in Hawai`i over the next four to five years.

Despite having to cancel this particular event, the PLANT Campaign will continue to work on educating & informing both policy-makers as well as individuals & businesses about the important role that trees play in mitigating the impacts of climate change, providing shelter & protection for all creatures great & small, and creating a pleasing environment in which to live, work & play. WAA expects to start PLANT-ing in January 2011.

We’ve also postponed our fund-raiser scheduled for this Tuesday at Cha Cha Cha Salsaria in Hawaii Kai; however, we will be going ahead with the last event – same time, same place, but with a different focus. We’re urging individuals, faith organizations, service clubs, businesses & all 33 Neighborhood Boards to send someone to the event who would be interested in working on the project over the next few months.

  60. madeinhawaii September 13, 2010 8:03 am

Good thing they didn’t put back the clock after the field goal, eh?

I wonder if there is an ulterior motive for bringing Graves to Vegas? Like having him be on the makeshift scout team as the opposing QB for the week? With the 1st win secured and Colorado being a very good possibility, a few reps against a well led scout team might do the defense good.

A win would justify staying in Las Vegas. Anyway Coach Mack weas advised that unless they were going to stay in Colorado for a least two weeks it would be detrimental to just be in Colorado for a few days. The experts advised them of that.

  66. maui warrior September 13, 2010 8:23 am

    Robin,

    Answer Over Here:

As stated previously Coach Mac thought practicing at that altitude would be detrimental to the warriors condition. Like it says, he coached in colorado previously and probably has a better idea of what the altitude does to you.

  67. kev-1 September 13, 2010 8:24 am

Colorado must be feeling really stupid realizing that the guy they should have hired was Peterson and not Hawkins.

I thought I heard on the Coach Mack show that they got a very good package from Boyd’s (UH Sponsor) to stay in Vegas with access to workout and practice facilities? UH doesn’t have all that many strong contacts in Colorado.

It is true that a team does bond on the road.

It’s good to see players from different backgrounds hanging out together.

It’s always been my opinion, that the team traveling has the advantage. It’s a business trip. You’re more focused on the road. You’re taveling with a purpose. You’re together constantly, so as a result are able to build team unity. No distractions. No party friends to bother you late at night. No pretty girlfriends to make you lose focus and concentration. Everyone focused on football and getting a win.

  71. A-joe September 13, 2010 8:33 am

I can just see ST all fired up from his pep talk with Heun running into a casino, arms extended, close lining 4 elderly ladies leisurely sitting at slot machines, head butting an oxygen using old guy completely off his Little Rascal scooter, and tackling an innocent scantly waitress for a 7 yard loss.

  72. (Jesse) James September 13, 2010 8:34 am

#69 Made…That’s correct. Apparently, UH got a good deal from Boyd Gaming. Since Boyd Gaming is a big sponsor of UH, we need to keep up that relationship as well so the UH people have to do their PR thing while there.

Medically speaking, it does take about a week and a half to truly aclimate to altitude, so the best thing to do in this situation is probably to just get in, play the game, and get out. Spending a couple of days in CO won’t help you adjust. And like Michigan Warrior stated, players will probably be rotating in more frequently and sucking O2 because of the altitude. This makes it even more critical that we take advantage of every scoring opportunity and not let up if/when we have the momentum.

    Oh….and Good Morning Tsaikos….

But after you work through that initial discomfort, you find out that getting hit by a three hundred pound guy is is more uncomfortable than your breathing problems. So, you focus on hitting him before he hits you. Getting hit by him is very uncomfortable.

From my Las Vegas source, here are some interesting numbers on the Hawaii/Colorado game, on the opening line at three Las Vegas casinos this morning.

The Mirage opened Colorado -10 at 11:29 a.m. Vegas time and still standing.

The Hilton opened Colorado -11 at 11:07 a.m. Vegas time and still standing.

Caesars Palace opened Colorado -10 at 11:40 a.m. Vegas time and it moved to 10 1/2 at 11:41 am and standing.

Very effective block, but a little dangerous. I’m glad that Hawaii seemed to make it out of that game without major knee injuries. Definitely says a lot about the Warriors conditioning.

  93. al September 13, 2010 9:13 am

so the wac finally gets it right…

i was thinking on sunday afternoon after a long nap (blame it on tell ma) that moniz should be nominated along with kellen moore and colin kapernick. in the past, the obvious would have been that the wac serves up moore as the mvp of the week. since, boise st is the marquee team of the wac.

however, with bsu, fsu, and unr defecting why should the wac bestow honors in their direction?

so the wac got it right and promotes the home boys of the wac (hawaii its most senior tenured team). we may see a trend like this all year involving not only hawaii but the other wac members of the future.

will it be enough to keep hawaii home?

if anything, hawaii is poised to be the marquee team of the wac. it is in our hands. all we gotta do is win baby.

    …nuff said.

In case you wondered if the officiating for the USC game overpenalized the trojans?

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/460608-usc-football-trojans-grades-for-virginia-cavaliers-and-fixes-for-minnesota#page/7

The offense had 7 penalties (3 false starts, 1 unsportsmanlike conduct, and 3 holding).

The defense had 3 personal fouls, and special teams had 1 personal foul, 1 holding, and 1 illegal block.

The impact of the penalties was increased because many happened at the wrong time and either took away USC points or helped Virginia score.

Anybody else catch the ND/Michigan game? After the game, the killer OB from Michigan was looking for someone after the game while reporters were trying to ask him questions. He continued to brush them off on his quest to seek out someone from the other team. The player he was seeking? Manti Teo. He found him and they embraced both giving eachother props for a good game. That is the ultimate sign of respect after a game, to seek out the one that you felt gave you a good run during the game. Tough loss for ND but pretty darn good showing by Teo.

Props to the local boy, even though I wish he were a Warrior.

Kellen Moore couldn’t be nominated this week because BSU didn’t play. Kaepernick was taken out of the game early in the 3rd quarter because they were killing CSU. Moniz is the QB that came through in the clutch and deserved the award, of course…but there were reasons why both Moore and Kaepernick weren’t going to win the award this week.

The week in Vegas gives the Warriors a unique opportunity — how many teams get a mini-camp after their first two games? It gives the team some additional time to bond and it gives some exposure in a good recruiting area, especially with Tuioti able to revisit old stomping grounds. I could see JD looking for future early away and away dates to make this a semi-permanent arrangement. Maybe an away in the midwest or east coast and followed by a designed home game at the Rebels place on odd years and against the Rebels in a long-standing home and away arrangement in even years.

    HAWAIIAN TIME #107

I don’t know – would you rather be in Flagstaff or Las Vegas.

I think it was fairly clear that UH (right or wrong) did not want to be in Boulder because of the acclimation problem.

Going to Flagstaff would be worse as Boulder is “only” at 5,430 elevation whereas Flagstaff is higher at 6,910!

  134. Stephen Tsai September 13, 2010 10:48 am

    Robin:

    Good questions, all.

I think they would lose some days of preparation if they flew back to Honolulu after the Army game, then went back to Colorado. For games played in the Mountain time zone, the Warriors usually leave on a Wednesday afternoon. So they would have come home late Sunday, then turned around and went back on the road Wednesday.

They’re staying in a Boyd-owned hotel, so there must be some discount. Plus, the hotel is away from the Strip and downtown.

I would imagine that next year, after the Washington game, it would be better to come home rather than spend a week in Vegas in preparation for the following week’s UNLV game.

  135. madeinhawaii September 13, 2010 11:00 am

Moving 6 time zones West.. then 5 time zones East in a 7-day span would really have a negative impact on the team.

When it’s hot, I would rather be in Flagstaff. I backed tracked because I thought a week was enough time to acclimate, but others said it wasn’t enough. So I agree, have lots of O2 and get in and out is the better call. If the Warriors had the time, Flagstaff would be the better call because of the higher altitude. I’m fairly sure Flagstaff would love to have the Warriors and it would be less distractions. It’s been getting hot again in the desert, but still a lot nicer than the same time last year. It will be very cool in Colorado come game time.

  138. HawaiianTime September 13, 2010 11:05 am

    mih #135,

Going to the EC and losing 6 hrs is tuff, but coming back to Vegas is only 3, so not to bad. They will be losing an hr when they go to Colorado.

  139. madeinhawaii September 13, 2010 11:06 am

Anybody know how much $$ is saved by staying on the mainland during a two game stretch rather than coming home? If it is a sizeable amount, then that should be a consideration if going independent… try to string two games at a time away …two games at home..

  140. al September 13, 2010 11:13 am

like st mentions, a lot has to do with the prep time that would be lost going back to hawaii and turning around. we’d lose two practices, when there really are only 4 days of “practice” per week.

  141. al September 13, 2010 11:15 am

  145. BG September 13, 2010 11:24 am

    al

Another very important factor is the minimizing of time zones crossed. Going to Hawaii from the east coast would be 6 hrs. Then going back to Colorado would be 4 hrs diff. From east coast to Vegas is 3 hrs and then to Boulder is 1 hr. BIG difference. Experienced travelers know the effects of accumulative jet-lag.

  149. NCAA September 13, 2010 11:45 am

    Mr. madeinhawaii,

The Warriors had around 7 rushing plays and the others were QB scrambles. I’m guessing the coaches decided that they could be pass happy against Army and stuck to their game plan.

  150. al September 13, 2010 11:49 am

we ran the ball seven times (not counting moniz scrambling). green six times for 40 yards/6.7 per carry. dimude once for -12 yds.

taking away dimude’s one carry, the six other times that green carried were very effective.

but, i believe because our passing game was so effective the need to run was not as significant in this game.

  151. cocobean September 13, 2010 12:03 pm

Not sure how good or bad a coach Hawkins is. He was in the right place at the right time. He took over BSU from the coach Iforgot his name) that’s went to Arizona State and now’s the OC for the NFL Jags. He inherited a winning program that already had a tradition of high participation in off season workouts. He brought in Petersen as OC but he was the one that got the credit for BSU offensive performance.

Colorado was in damage control over their tabloid like incidences in recruiting and player behavior. They needed a coach with a squeaky clean image to come in and change the culture which was being portrayed as being near Playboy Mansion like.

Unfortunately for Colorado, Hawkins was not the guru behind BSU’s offense nor was he a culture creator or changer. But he did come up with the line Mack uses, “this isn’t intramural football.” He used it in reponse to a parent’s complaint about the amount time he wanted the players to spend for (voluntary) off season workouts.

  152. madeinhawaii September 13, 2010 12:06 pm

Just that much less tape that Colorado can study, eh? Might be a good thing.

Colorado will probably use the low atmosphere advantage and try to push our line guys to their limits early. I expect them to rush, bull rush, do all they can to physically exert our Oline and run like crazy in the early goings to wind our Dline guys early, too. Our receivers will get winded faster (not exhuasted) and need to rotate in and out with greater frequency. So, getting the running game going, as well as the shovel pass, quick screens, pitches to the outside, and sweeps early in the game, might be what we need to get Colorado to sit back a bit and to give our receivers a bit of a respite.

Re: 150, Interesting to see how at SMU, JJ continues to build a balanced attack, while running the run and shoot using his version of the pistol formation. He is joking with reporters that he is running the Ohio State Power I.

Padron attempted 33 passes, completing 18 for 145 yards and two TD’s.

But the team rushed for 247 yards on 37 carries, Padron had 9 of those carries averaging 7.3 yards a carry. JJ’s stud RB, at 235 lbs like Alex Green, ran 16 times averaging 7.6 yards a carry and 2 TD’s.

He started this last year, including the Navy game where he ran more than passed.

    Manoa,

The interesting thing is that JJ had a drive yesterday where they ran the ball 8 straight times, going a total of 64 yards for a TD. If a defense refuses to adjust because they figure they only have to worry about the pass, they can be made to pay for it. I know that Rolo said that he talks with JJ every week and hopefully Rolo will keep giving Green carries if the run is working like it was against Army.

Mike Leach is going to be one of the announcers for SMU’s game this week and Leach should have some interesting insight because he met with JJ several times before coming up with the offense he used at Texas Tech.

I have never sent a blanket e-mail from the Windward Ahupua`a Alliance to the Tsai-ko listserv although I have from time to time posted information about upcoming activities on the blog itself. Of the 50 or so Tsai-ko e-mail addresses, I have only placed five of them on the WAA listserv over the past three years because I felt that each person would be interested in the content. Three of them asked to be removed and they were – within hours.

Any one of the 2400+ recipients of the e-newsletter has two ways to opt out – either by clicking on an auto-delete button which generates a report to me or by contacting me directly via e-mail or phone.

One of the reasons I would never send anything unrelated to Tsai-ko stuff out to its entire listserv is that I don’t know who many of the people are. I cannot connect their blog name & e-mail address to a face and to their real names.

As for the politicians, I am on at least 15 diffeerent listservs, but I have no idea how my e-mail address has gotten there. I always ask to have my work e-mail address be removed from a political listserv.

    RE: #171

A matter of semantics–there is NO Tsai-ko listserv that I know of… all we have are individuals sending out personal emails with many receipients…often borrowing the email addresses from someone else’s previous mailing.

Here is the definition of a listerv:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LISTSERV

These were popular in mid-90’s and I was required to subscribe to several just to learn to cope with hundreds of emails a day… some are useful, like Mac and PC user groups. Enter the 21st century and we have blogs. Interestingly, a blog is much like a listerv, where everyone can write something and everyone else can see it.

The only difference is that people go the blog sites via their web browser, rather than many “posts” being sent to their email account. Can you imagine every post in, say, today’s blog being an individual message in your email account? In fact, ST receives every post on the blog in his SA email.

….and before someone gets inspired to set up a Tsai-ko listerv… remember, the purposes of a blog are functionally the same. Setting up a listserv will detract “hits” from ST’s Warrior Beat blog–and could be viewed as competition.

The WAC just sued Nevada, Fresno State, and the MWC.

Jane Tors, special assistant to the president for media relations, confirmed Nevada had received the lawsuit and said President Milton Glick was not immediately available for comment.

“On behalf of President Glick, we’re disappointed by this,” Tors said. “The primary reason we’re disappointed is the suit was filed before any discussions had ensued. We had publicly indicated that these matters can be resolved and that they should be resolved directly between the parties.”

The WAC is seeking that Nevada and Fresno State not withdraw from the conference before June 30, 2012, that all defendants (including the Mountain West) be prohibited from scheduling contests that interfere with games to be played against remaining WAC members through 2011-12, and for further relief as the court sees just.

Question — for entertainment purposes only. 🙂 What does it mean when a team is -11 and then goes to -10.5? I never understood how the sports thing works … only blackjack.

As for the back-and-forth travel, already been pointed out that multiple trips magnifies the jet lag and there is the benefit of the “mini camp” during the season, plus perhaps recruiting exposure, plus maybe a price break.

But keep in mind that sending all the pads and uniforms and stuff has got to add up. It’s also such important stuff to have that you don’t want to forward it to a destination that you are not at.

  203. 99club September 13, 2010 3:11 pm

    greenthumb-

If you are in Vegas and say you want to bet Colorado to win the game, you have to give Hawaii 11 points on top of whatever else Hawaii scores to make the bet. -10.5 means you have to give 10 1/2 points. So Colorado would have to win by more than 10 1/2 or 11 points for you to win the wager.

Remember the WAC code book that I posted here that said that the deadline to leave the WAC was September 1? The WAC bylaws says the deadline is June 30, but the WAC really should have gotten around to updating its code book. One of the defenses that Nevada will use is the WAC’s own code book.

The WAC has said Nevada and Fresno State needed to notify it by June 30 if they planned to leave in 2011, and did not. The schools maintain the deadline was Sept. 1, according to an annual league code book whose rules apparently differed from the league by-laws.

The WAC also maintains that both schools owe it $5 million after agreeing on that amount as an exit fee for leaving before 2016. But the schools say that agreement was valid only if BYU’s non-football sports joined the WAC, which they ultimately did not.

Karl Benson’s June 7 teleconference will really hurt the WAC’s lawsuit…since the WAC is now claiming that the June 30 deadline is set in stone but he said the opposite back then.

A few interesting tidbits from Karl Benson’s teleconference:

He scheduled the teleconference a few days ago, apparently (though the media was not informed of it until about 1 p.m. MST). The reason? “…what we thought might be an invitation to Boise State.”

That July 1 deadline to leave the WAC for another conference for the 2011-12 season is not a be-all, end-all deadline. If Boise State/MWC exceeds it, the Broncos could still leave, but would be subject to further penalties. Benson implied it would be more financial than say, holding onto them until 2012-13.

I spoke with Keither Amemiya earlier this afternoon about the three items on the Board of Regents Agenda – http://www.hawaii.edu/offices/bor/regular/notice/20100916.regular.pdf – at its meeting this week. Assuming that what he says is true, then here’s the explanation.

    VI #9

Approval to Request to Amend and Rettle the UHM Class from Administrative Assiostant for Football Operations to Coodinator of Operations (Football, Men’s Basketball, and Women’s Basketball) pursuant to Board of REgents Policy, Chapter 9-2f(2)(b), “Guidelines for Employment and Compensation of Coaches in Major Intercollegiate Sports.”

The reason for consolidating the three sports is a financial one and was initiated by the Department of Athletics. The Chancellor’s office and the Board of Regents are taking their cues from Jim Donovan and his staff.

    VI #10 & #11

Approval to Request to Terminate the Athletic Training Specialization in the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science Program

    and

Approval to Request to Terminate the Recreational Leadership Specialization in the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and Rehabilitation Science Program

The reason for the termination is that there is almost no demand for the two programs because there are very few openings available. I got the impression that there is very little turnover in the athletic training industry so that students are not attracted to the program.

I agree with you 808%. S&C Coach Tommy Heffernan has done an outstanding job during the off/in-season re conditioning and strength training.

ST has even reported that there has been an increased in off-season partcipation and positive player reviews.

Injuries has been kept to a minimum (4) and none hamstring related. The four were/are Rodney Bradley (bruised ribs – due to landing on the football); Laupepa Letuli (strained calf); Bryant Moniz (semi-concussion because of a cheap shot forearm to his head); and Spencer Smith (fractured right forearm). So, it’s safe to say that none of the injuries was due to lack of stretching and/or working out.

HOWEVER, here is what someone posted yesterday (9/12/10 @ 8:38 a.m.), I won’t mention any names but you’ll probably figure it out by the writer’s style.

    .

INJURIES is really what UH should be concern with as losing KEY players in their positions is a telling sign already as stretching and weight lifting needs to be emphasize before pratice and afterwards with CONCENTRATION on the legs abd deltoid muscles.

Squats, leg extensions, regular bench press, sit ups, incline and declines with bicep curls will help keep the body STRONG as football is a PHYSICAL sport and these young men who play it are GLADIATORS as carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and iron are enssential to feed the body to recuperate the energy, mass and water these young men are using up daily in their battles on the field.”

Huh?! Are you serious?!?! You’re joking, right?!?!?!

I believe that Coach Heffernan is more than qualified for the S&C position. As not only earning a degree in that field but also being a former football player who knows what it takes to get to next level.

    GO WARRIOS!

Hope all of the Hawaii fans going to Boulder have a great time. Boulder is definitely one of the most beautiful places that I have ever seen. Hawaii fans will get to understand this weekend why a lot of Hawaii kids like to get their education at CU. I believe that CU gets between 30 to 40 freshman from Hawaii every year.

  227. Bowbooze September 13, 2010 5:09 pm

    Chopsueyboy,

In the nineteen sixties I coached a boy’s basketball team from the upper Liliha area that was sponsored by Tasty Chop Suey. One day I sent a few of the boys in the restaurant to ask if they were willing to sponsor the team with uniforms (T-shirts with Tasty Chop Suey stenciled on the front and numbers on the back). I was totally surprised when they told me that the owner said to make the uniforms and just send the bill to him. What a great owner to say alright to a bunch of kids, who may have never eaten at the restaurant before. If this was your dad, you had a very generous and caring father to help these kids.

    Bowbooze

I never heard that one before, but I was a kid.

My parents were very giving with community and church.

I know he sponsored whatever bowling teams I participated

and a bunch of basketball teams in the Kalihi area.

Those were the 2 sports he cared about the most,

even though he never played, we watched on tv together.

Because of his busy work schedule, he finally saw me bowl during my

senior year at Hawaii Baptist, and I remembered bowling over 200.

His comment was, not bad, could have done better.

Oh well, at least he saw me, finally.

When we had our son participating in sports,

we made sure one of us were at all his games.

  243. Garret September 13, 2010 7:29 pm

Looks like UT-San Antonio will be at the WAC offices tomorrow to meet with Karl Benson and the rest of the WAC officials. I already posted how Karl Benson contacted a fan site for Texas State to answer questions from their fans. It sure appears to me that the WAC is moving further east and UH will be even more geographically isolated.

UTSATailgaters has confirmed that UTSA Head Football Coach Larry Coker, Athletic Director Lynn Hickey and some of her administration staff will , in fact, be meeting with WAC Commissioner Karl Benson tomorrow at WAC headquarters in Denver, Colorado.

UTSATailgaters has confirmed with at least two sources that this is in fact is a sales pitch to the WAC, as UTSA pushes onward in their sky rocketing ascension to FBS status. Back in July, UTSATailgaters had a one-on-one interview with WAC Commissioner Karl Benson, and he made it no secret that the WAC had UTSA on it’s radar and that the UTSA was a very attractive program.

  244. Garret September 13, 2010 7:30 pm

It appears that the WAC may be about to add *four* D-IAA schools. This explains the Big Sky adding UC-Davis and Cal Poly.

Two other schools that were confirmed by these same sources that have been prominently mentioned to be very high on the WAC’s list, are Montana and Montana State.

Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010 7:00 PM at Club Genji

It will be a night of Japanese enka, english, and Hawaiian karaoke. Korean too by request.

Dinner/pupus are optional and off the menu. No cover charge or drink minimum. Karaoke songs are $1 each. Come for dinner or just drop in for a while. Great opportunity for lurkers to meet everyone!

email SteveM for room count purposes and parking instructions if you have not been to Genji’s in the evening. stevem.hnl (at) gmail.com

  257. Garret September 13, 2010 8:31 pm

    99club,

Both UT-San Antonio and Texas State would be within easy driving distance for you and it would give Lori and I the perfect excuse to visit Austin again. It would be tough for UH in terms of travel time, but there aren’t any options on the West Coast since they don’t have money.

You are correct that UT-SA and Texas State would only be in the WAC until C-USA invited them…but they will be in line behind La Tech. In fact, most of the WAC has been comprised of teams that wanted to leave but had nowhere to go. BSU, Fresno, Nevada, Utah State and even UH have openly wished for MWC invitations, everyone knows that La Tech wants to be in the C-USA, which only leaves SJSU, NMSU, and Idaho happy with being in the WAC.

At Army, UH had a couple of fumbles

so that kept UH offense off the field.

I remember (in the oooold days…) on the mainland

    home teams

had sideline ball boys with oily towels

to make the footballs more slippery and then

toss them out to the opposing team…

    Colorado Hawkins wouldn’t do that—

    would he?

  261. Aloha Oe September 13, 2010 9:33 pm

    empty,

I tried beer early on. I don’t drink beer, so it’s costly to have around just for the slugs, AND they are not attracted to day-old beer. Picky, picky, picky… I did find that they just hang out under the empty cups that I buried in the soil to get the lip at ground level. Just as good. It’s getting better in the garden, though. Not as many slugs.

    Pride.,

I agree with your assessment of Boulder. I loved visiting & my husband lived there for a while. But NAU in Flagstaff just had 70 new freshman & transfer students from Hawaii start this fall. It’s partly because the HAPA Hawaiian Club being there & lower tuition because of the WUE program (1+1/2 times Resident tuition, not out-of-state.)

    Stretch,

  274. Ralph September 13, 2010 11:20 pm

then Kenny is there but the coaches elected to bring up a rs freshman qb to start at safety, where did all the hype that we have depth with the D go, is that what a reporter would label as a coaches’ spin.

  275. Ralph September 13, 2010 11:27 pm

Aloha Oe, Al is gnawing his teeth, oh no, another pessimist, Graves is the man, all purpose do it all. But isn’t he labelled our qb of the future or is Al’s little birdie reporting otherwise like some else is in the pipeline that UH is looking to sign. Regarding signing, we don’t have any 2011 commitments to date, with the bleak future of the WAC I think we better be proactive and do a lot of selling and get the firm commits sooner than later.

Al, what you say, or what your little birdie say, we got any under wraps but not annouced?

don’t really understand Coach Mack’s rationale.

just because a player has played db in HIGH SCHOOL and is currenntly a redshirt frosh qb, it DOES NOT mean he would have a better understanding of an opponent’s offensive scheme.

i hope a five-day crash course will help him recognize Cu’s offensive.

hopefully David Graves will eat his wheaties in the morning because those CU offensive linemen are massive coen-fed boys. i’d hate to see a downfield block by one of those OL. Graves is much to valuable to UH’s future to risk injury.

as the Monday Night studio crew would say C’MON MAN!

    Garret,

RE: Your #257. Sad but true that the WAC seems to be the “conference of last resort” or the “conference until something better comes along.” Again, I hope the WAC legal minds extract full payment out of the defectors. What kills me is the possibility of lost scholarships at those schools that may have to revert back to FCS status (NMSU comes to mind).

  302. 702WarriorFan September 14, 2010 6:06 am

    Morning

    Aloha Oe,

Graves calling for safety is no garan thats the only position we may see him play.

I like Al’s thought which also occurred to me that having 2 good running QBs from R&S Pistol with our 2 RBs hopefully will keep the Buffs on their hind legs and off balance to give us the edge on the scoreboard and possession time. Run first and shoot to put the Buff out of their misery. Another look to give future oppositions more to think about.

Now we’ll really see if the S&C summer program we both agree to, will really pay big dividends on Sat. I like what I’ve seen to date so I believe it will!

  303. protector September 14, 2010 6:15 am

    al on #285,

What about the idea that was floated the other day about Torres at Corner and LD moved to Safety? I liked that proposal; might there be any credence to that?

  304. d1島 September 14, 2010 6:16 am

    Great Morning All!

I believe there’s a reason why Shimogawa is back home with the other back-ups….

  305. d1島 September 14, 2010 6:17 am

    Have a terrific day erryboddy!

    HiHo…

  306. Hank September 14, 2010 6:22 am

    Good Morn’in all…

…sickening that Pres Welty from FSU and Pres Glick from Reno both expressed disappointment that discussions couldn’t have taken place before the WAC law suit announced in the Star Advertiser this am…

…aren’t these the scum balls that went HELE ON without any discussion with the WAC?

  307. whitey September 14, 2010 6:23 am

good morning tsaikos and a ho hi to d1

  308. Kekoa (iPhone) September 14, 2010 6:37 am

    G’day Tsaiko’s!…

Whitey, those besubaru prayers from Maui were kick’n azz up in America this past weekend! Did you have a CC for them at your Breakfast of Champions hangout before they left?

  309. 99club September 14, 2010 6:45 am

    Hank,

I thought the same thing when I read those quotes. All those years building up their reputations to become college presidents, and then they flush ’em down the toilet saying and doing those types of things. Where’s the honesty?

  310. whitey September 14, 2010 7:17 am

bradda kekoa, will miss this sat game cause going be in transit. got a 2 days of “marketing” in rasu’s backyard.

  311. whitey September 14, 2010 7:20 am

sometimes we get bent out of shape, but when we do, most have good reasons. like hank and 99club, the stabbing you getting in the back (from the WAC) is worse than getting kicked in the balls. Who said to play nice???

  312. whitey September 14, 2010 7:21 am

ST, your lucky number today is 11.

  313. Slugger September 14, 2010 7:55 am

    d1,

Did you mean Shigematsu from Kauai?

    MIH,

Thanks for the slug-a-bug info. I put my coffee grounds in the soil with the rest of my kitchen compost which may be helping with the slug population. But I’ve still seen slug eggs in the soil. Yuck!

I think Al might have a point with the mis-direction re: Graves. Surprise plays?

  314. Slugger September 14, 2010 7:56 am

    Gooood morning, gang!!!

  315. Shoko September 14, 2010 8:30 am

    Morning Gang

I always thought salt worked well in killing slugs. However, I’m not a professional slug hunter.

  316. Kekoa (iPhone) September 14, 2010 8:47 am

Whitey ~ Please remind the Boyd group that theIr support of UH athletics is greatly appreciated.

Your marketing expertise has been called upon quite often lately. Is there some way that the rest of us mere mortals can participate in your marketing campaign?

  317. tom mui September 14, 2010 8:49 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

Graves may be our QB of the future – he looks good.

Of course I had said that about Blaine Gaison way back then. As a QB he was good; as a safety, he was great.

  318. NCAA September 14, 2010 8:58 am

Don’t believe a sportscaster who has no inside knowledge.

Mr. Ralph, the Wahine volleyball team didn’t move up.

  319. NCAA September 14, 2010 9:05 am

My apologies, the sportscaster in question may/could/sometimes have inside knowledge but in this case, as al might say, is interpreting the subliminal message incorrectly.

  320. NCAA September 14, 2010 9:11 am

    #223 Mr. Aloha Oe,

I was just reading your quote from another poster and noticed that person spoke of concentrating on the deltoid muscle but in the list of exercises there is not one that isolates and works the deltoids.

  321. NCAA September 14, 2010 9:17 am

    Mr. whitey,

Don’t you find it odd that the one player you wanted out of the lineup on Saturday is the WAC player of the week?

Yes, I went back and read the blog. Whoever Mr./Ms. UHfan808 is, my hat is off to that person. That person stayed positive throughout the game.

  322. James September 14, 2010 9:19 am

hey there, this might be little offtopic, but i am hosting my site on hostgator and they will suspend my hosting in 4days, so i would like to ask you which hosting do you use or recommend?

  323. Pomai September 14, 2010 9:21 am

    Mr. NCAA

I don’t think that Ms. UHfan808 know how to be negative……..

  324. Pomai September 14, 2010 9:21 am

    know = knows

  325. False Cracks September 14, 2010 9:22 am

    time to go fishing again,

instead of the bottom casting, trolling seems to be more popular….and the weather is so nice today in Hawaii nei……..

Keebler cookies would be nice too, but the trees are too crowded i think

  326. NCAA September 14, 2010 9:22 am

    Mr. James,

I recommend you take a vacation for 4 days.

  327. Bulla September 14, 2010 9:22 am

    #324,

I agree 1000% with you on that one Pomai 🙂

  328. WAC September 14, 2010 9:23 am

    Whitey,

ahoy there matey, guns to the starboard and steady as she blows….

  329. NCAA September 14, 2010 9:29 am

    Mr. Pomai,

Thank you for the answer. It’s nice for teams to have positive fans like her.

It’s also fine for someone to give negative opinions but they should also realize that players have friends, family, relatives, and frenemies that read the blog too.

How would they feel if it was their son, daughter, relative, friend, or friend of friend that just got ripped into by some non-positive spin?

  330. Shoko September 14, 2010 9:32 am

If its an objective opinion, absent of any personal attack on a player, its fine in my book.

  331. al September 14, 2010 9:35 am

and not to forget that the players have feelings too.

  332. NCAA September 14, 2010 9:37 am

    Mr./Ms. Shoko,

    I agree, no personal attack.

Objective is fine but subjective is, well subjective. And like I mentioned, know your audience.

  333. LizKauai m/ September 14, 2010 9:42 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka and GO WARRIORS!

    WE BELIEVE AND WE TRUST!

  334. Shoko September 14, 2010 9:51 am

    NCAA,

Agreed. It’s important to know your company and state one’s opinion tactfully with respect to other bloggers that have a close relationship with said player. I think, for the most part, bloggers here have a certain level of respect for one another and are willing to ignore certain post that they find offensive or disrepectful.

Anyway, its always good for someone to speak up, once in awhile, to be reminded of certain etiquette standards.

    UH is a team.

Funny no one saying how great the center played.

    He did good.

The guards, tackles, ends, backs, wideouts,

special teams, defense, you name it…

They ALL did above and beyond their duty.

    God bless them.

    Amen.

  348. 99club September 14, 2010 10:29 am

I saw on the UH Athletics homepage about Tulane replacing Oregon St. next year on the schedule. According to the article, the Oregon St. game was moved to the 2014 season per Oregon State’s request. But I look at 2014 and see that we were already scheduled to visit OR St. in 2014. Does UH host OR St. in 2014 and then visits at a later date TBD? Sorry if I missed this discussion previously.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Every time you buy, you see the card of authenticity. Each bag has its own authenticity card. If the bag you do not buy a card, then it is not original. The serial number is as important as the card of authenticity. Without the serial number you can be sure that your Designer Replica Handbags are fake or counterfeit. Do you check out these things first before other things, if you decided to buy this big bag.

It depends on the supplement and on you individually as well. Most supplements are targeted dose-wise at a roughly 25 year old athletic 180lb male. So adjusting what you take based on that makes sense. Or you can look specifically at someplace like pubmed http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed for the individual ingredients in the supplement, to see what dosage was medically effective.
