Moniz, Brown win WAC awards

Quarterback Bryant Moniz and linebacker Aaron Brown were named the WAC’s offensive and defensive players of the weeks, respectively.

In a 41-7 rout of San Jose State, Moniz threw a for a school-record 560 yards. Brown had the first two interceptions of his UH career, returning one of them 22 yards for a touchdown.

    Brown is a terrific athlete!

Moniz is, well, 560 yards in one game speaks for itself!

dpk…alex green has 705 yards rushing. he’ll need nearly 100 yds per game to accoplish that feat. he has exceeded the 1000 yd mark in all purpose yards.

i thought that paipai falemalu had a shot at pow with three sacks and a hurry. i guess, had he a few more tackles he might have been considered.

while i am sure that kellen moore’s parting gift will be the offensive poy for the wac, it would be a shame moniz is not the second team qb in the wac this year.

Congratulations to Moniz and Brown. It seems that UH has had a hand in A LOT of WAC POW awards this year. That’s great.

Also, congrats to Moniz on breaking the record and wanting to pay tribute to Colt by wearing the #15. That would have been an awesome sight had it been worked out.

The following is just a fleeting thought regarding Colt’s tribute, not a big bone to pick at all, just something that crossed my mind:

Wouldn’t a more fitting tribute to Colt have been for Moniz to pull himself from the game (or Rolo pull him out since it was already a blow out) once he neared Colt’s record? What better way to honor a record that was broken against a PAC-10 team during a bowl game, than to break it against a horrible San Jose St? I feel like that would have been more of a salute to Colt. Kind of like stepping back and tipping your hat to one of the best to put on a Warrior uniform. I’m sure Moniz would have ended up breaking the record next year anyway. Just my thoughts. Not intended as a shot to Moniz at all. I respect his decision and his play.

Colt, please get well soon. Everyone’s thoughts are with you . . . all the time. You are truly a son of Hawaii. Shakti and the other driver (sorry I don’t know her name), may you also experience speedy recoveries.

We had planned to send in one check for $175 (7 T-gates – $25 each) on behalf of the Tsai-kos after the UNLV game to Koa Anuenue for summer school scholarships in all sports programs. However, now we’ll wait until after the Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl and then send in one check for $200

From Bobby’s radio show, the MWC has not offered membership to UH nor has the Big West yet. Only evaluating UH and what it brings to the “party”.

UH losing leverage by going public too early per Bobby. If they do move to the other leagues, they will probably have to pay too much in travel subsidies now. But he thinks we still we be moving.

If we don’t, we can continue to pulverize the WAC teams ?

  30. madeinhawaii November 22, 2010 8:54 am

Just win… get the rest of the teams to the Big West … and keep winning. 11-3 with a promising “payoff” season next year (the final AQ evaluation year) will help add clout.

    Good Morning da world!

  31. expat November 22, 2010 8:59 am

The press conference seemed premature to me — but on the other hand there is some value in making the whole thing public — it puts the MWC in the spotlight a bit so they could not negotiate the whole thing in the back room and it puts some pressure on them. It is a risk though.

A few questions I have that maybe ST knows the answer to — where do Fresno State and Nevada stand with regard to representation at the MWC? They, along with Boise State, are still technically members of the WAC right now and both of them will also be members of the WAC next year. So, do all three still currently vote as members of the WAC? Do any of them have votes currently in the MWC? I am especially curious as to whether either Fresno State or Nevada have votes (as opposed to just input) on whether Hawaii gets an invite.

If Hawaii does end up moving football to the MWC where do we stand with regard to voting? We would not be a full member school. My understanding is that a full member school cannot be voted out of a conference by its peers, but what about a football-only member school? What kind of input would we have on MWC decisions with regard to bowls, payouts, etc?

  32. Da Punchbowl Kid November 22, 2010 9:00 am

    No matter what, win!

It has brought the Warriors to this good place and will take them to even better places if they continue to win.

For all the other memories we might have of this year’s team, we need to thank them for helping to get us to the table with the MWC.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  33. Warrior Ken November 22, 2010 9:01 am

If UH doesn’t complete the move to the MWC then it appears it would be business as usual (i.e. Fumbling) for UH admin. I hope and pray that the move happens as advertised.

  42. bb November 22, 2010 9:26 am

#38-to summarize, Both the Big West and Mountain West have come out and commented stating that NO invitation has been granted to UH or any other school.

Big West has stated that there are other schools that are interested in joining and Mountain West has stated that no invite has been given and that they are evaluating the possibility of perhaps expanding one day.

Nothing is in writing. Nothing has been set in stone. Upper campus pretty much showed their cards too soon (according to BC). We have lost leverage in negotiating and have perhaps put us in a precarious position if for example the Big West does not want us.

  46. madeinhawaii November 22, 2010 9:31 am

If UH brings their Men’s Volleyball team into the talks with the Big West.. then the Big West will not turn their backs on UH… Being able to become a Men’s VB conference with a conference winner representing the Big West in the play offs is a big incentive to the Big West. They need one more men’s team to build a viable conference.

  47. diehard fan November 22, 2010 9:35 am

    # 39, after he said Benson was holding a press conference today, i think

(at about 11:00 am ? HST / 3:00 pm Central time) to be on 1420, he said something about that apparently UH had not been extended an invitation by MWC. Only that MWC was reviewing what UH brings in tv money or something like that. Also Big West hadn’t extended an invitation but is looking at the situation. And now UH may have lost its leverage and may have to overpay on the travel subsidies.

But later he said he still thinks UH will be moving.

I feel that the MWC teams should use the Hawaii Exemption to schedule an extra game on the mainland to offset any extra travel costs to Hawaii and why does Hawaii have to subsidize them ?

  48. madeinhawaii November 22, 2010 9:36 am

Hope Garret’s doing fine and his project’s doing well. It’s the Thanksgiving week so hopefully everyone will be able to take some time off from their busy schedules and spend it with their loved ones. Warriors, mahalo, for your sacrifice away from home in search of another win and a drop of respectability for our program, school and islands.

  49. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2010 9:36 am

i haven’t read a single thing that confirms the kinds of reports about UH going to the MWC as a near deal kind of thing.

There are schools (UNLV, Air Force) that support our membership.

There are bowl games (Las Vegas Bowl) that support our membership.

There is a MWC University President (SDSU) who says that UH has gone the furthest in their exploration of adding another school.

There IS NOT a school, bowl game, university president, MWC official that talks about a deal, near deal, handshake, or near handshake.

I dunno if we blew a little too early with the presser. Btw was I the only one that thought it was a pretty horrible press conference. It seemed like this was their first time speaking in front of an audience.

  52. Old Diver November 22, 2010 9:43 am

I wonder if Bobby Curren has looked at the Elo Chess BCS computer rankings lately.

Hawaii’s Elo Chess is higher the any team in the Big East and Conference USA. Hawaii would be second in the ACC and third in the MWC behind TCU and Utah two teams which will probably not be there in two years. I hope this is not an overstatement but it looks like the MWC needs Hawaii. As far as the Big West goes, Hawaii brings prestige to that conference in so many ways. And one more thing, When Fresno and Nevada announced they were leaving for the MWC nothing was signed, and when Utah and Colorado announced they were leaving for the Pac-10 there was nothing signed. I don’t even know if Utah and Colorado has signed anything yet. UH announced they were moving to the MWC because they shook hands on it. While the MWC could back out, that hand shake which has not been denied by the MWC puts pressure on the MWC to carry through with the verbal commitment. Unless Bobby Curren has good reason to doubt the handshake agreement other than listening to the birds in his head he should keep his mouth shut.

  53. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2010 9:45 am

Way back when the whole nationwide conference shake up was underway I said the way we get our foot into MWC is through UNLV.

    check mark.

Now we have to shift our focus way the hell away from sweet talking Presidents, Conference people, blah blah blah all the “usual suspects” and we need to leverage and talk up ESPN.

I’m far from being a genius but Hawaii, fans, everyone should know that the ONLY FOCUS should be on getting ESPN to tell the MWC…”Hey guys, we want Hawaii in your conference…”

If we can get ESPN to want us then the MWC will have leverage to negotiate any kind of contract with Hawaii in it.

Too bad Hawaii doesn’t have a senior US Senator who chairs a powerful appropriations committee that could easily bring ESPN to the forefront with legislation dealing with cable television….

the presser was i thought a “little strange” i definitely had more questions coming out of it.

i noticed that it was held at upper campus and not at the SSC like most sports related pressers. also, it was at the same time of the volleyball game which i thought was kind of strange.

53, does ESPN have any power over CSTV, the tv network for MWC ?

  63. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2010 10:02 am

    Old Diver,

I remember hearing on radio that Benson was “twittered” while at a Denver basketball game that UH was given the “invitation”

    Lost cause.

  64. Old Diver November 22, 2010 10:03 am

“Some reports suggested that the WAC would be willing to offer Hawaii the same kind of football-only deal in order to keep them in the league, but that move would seem to be less rewarding for Hawaii.”

The article in the examiner.com is poorly done. The WAC already offered Hawaii to be a football only member. This means Benson already knows that Hawaii is moving all sports except football to the Big West Conference.

  65. Old Diver November 22, 2010 10:05 am

    #63

    iwonderwhytheyhateme,

I have never criticized Benson before, but I can see what many here have been annoyed by him.

  66. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2010 10:05 am

    diehard fan,

No ESPN and CSTV totally different. But thats what makes the whole thing so juicy.

You have ESPN wanting Hawaii in, MWC currently has CSTV (exp 2011) and you want to think they want to hold on to that MWC contract.

So with Hawaii in you have an additional bargaining chip for the 2011 negotiations. ESPN already loves Boise but we want ESPN to say we love Hawaii too.

It also does not hurt to have the commitment from Sheraton Hawaii Bowl to go with us to MWC. To bring in another bowl with us is HUGE…no one should down play that.

  67. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2010 10:07 am

    Old Diver,

You would think that WAC would offer us to either keep only football in WAC or just all other sports in WAC. Either way they keep the option of keeping the football competitiveness up or the basketball auto-invite in.

  68. Jon November 22, 2010 10:10 am

    Old Diver

Get a grip! Regardless of whether Nevada, Fresno or even Utah has “signed” anything yet, the MWC and Pac-10 conferences immediately held press conferences to make the announcements on how this helps their leagues.

The MWC has done no such thing in this case other than to say that they’re talking to Hawaii.

We all hope the MWC membership comes to pass but it really sounds like the Hawaii leadership team jumped the gun on the announcement. Better to let the rumors churn until there is something more concrete.

  69. NCAA November 22, 2010 10:13 am

Too bad all other UH sports couldn’t move to the PAC-12.

  70. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2010 10:19 am

Utah announces it will leave for PAC-10 – They are off the national radar now.

BYU announces they will leave for Indy – They are pretty awful this year.

TCU still in MWC – They are probably going BCS bowling.

Hmmm…me thinks they should decline the Big East invite if they know whats good for them.

  71. Jun Tao November 22, 2010 10:31 am

was it so much the UH leadership as the cause? or was it the local media putting it out early the cause? I blame the media because they put something out “prematurely” then what UH knew at the time. Yes, I’m sure UH leadership was working the deal but once the media broke the news, UH had no other option but to go public and mention that something is in the works.

Again, I don’t recall them “accepting” an invitation at the press conference only that they were working on a deal with the MWC for football only. I really think the local media here is responsible for this whole uncertainty. So whoever broke the information first, would look great if it were to come to fruition. But if deal does not go through, then that reporter should remove him/herself from the media.

  72. Old Diver November 22, 2010 10:32 am

I think recruiting wise the early announcement makes sense. Letting rumors churn means uncertainty.

  73. Lopaka43 November 22, 2010 10:36 am

    Aloha, Tsaiko Ohana!!

Once again the endless speculation by people who know nothing about what is going on behind closed doors and over the phone lines.

    We have been here before.

Please trust Jim Donovan to have done his homework.

The details are being worked out. It is clearly in the MWC’s and Big West’s favor to have Hawaii as members, especially since Jim Donovan has said we are going to give travel subsidies.

The clarifications about what technically is happening are legally correct, but it is clear that UH received assurances from the conference call that if details were worked out, an official invitation would be forthcoming.

    Back to lurking. Esme woosh….

Nothing to take away from Donovan because as an administrator I’m sure he’s working his butt off and he’s doing a great job at it.

But my gut feeling and from what I have heard if not for Freitas this “chance” may not ever existed.

  83. al November 22, 2010 11:02 am

benson sounds like it is a foregone conclusion that hawaii is wac history and plans are moving forward if and when hawaii does not accept the last wac offer.

north texas state was (again) formally invited to the wac.

cal davis was approached again but chose to stay in the big sky in the future.

  84. al November 22, 2010 11:03 am

tcu was offered a non-football conference invite.

  85. NCAA November 22, 2010 11:05 am

TCU Big East might be a done deal.

  88. al November 22, 2010 11:08 am

it appears that the wac has exhausted its resources for any schools west of texas and would be looking at other texas schools as well.

this is one of the key movements by the wac that makes the mwc even more beneficial to us. this is one of the factors that jd mentioned as significant in our wanting to go west.

  89. Michigan Warrior November 22, 2010 11:12 am

LOL! Did you guys hear that last question directed to Benson by a caller?

  90. bb November 22, 2010 11:12 am

    GET YOUR A$$ FIRED!!!!

    FTW!

  91. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2010 11:12 am

    al,

its not always good to say why our conference isn’t appealing to us anymore.

    1) its a shot to our conference. 2) more importantly it gives the mwc more leverage for getting more money out of us.

  92. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2010 11:14 am

    michigan warrior,

i missed it i missed it!

    what did he ask!?!

  93. Michigan Warrior November 22, 2010 11:15 am

It sounded like he asked Benson, “When are you gonna get your A– out of the conference?” And Benson asked him to repeat it, so he repeated the question… that’s when everyone realized what he said/asked, and tried to abruptly disconnect the call.

  94. bb November 22, 2010 11:15 am

“hey Karl, get your ass fired”

  95. madeinhawaii November 22, 2010 11:15 am

  99. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2010 11:18 am

im glad Denver lady just asked about Hawaii Bowl and hearing it from Benson that “they will likely follow Hawaii…”

Very good to hear that publicly for MWC fans.

And now he is talking about how North Texas might be happier with Hawaii gone so no travel.

  100. NCAA November 22, 2010 11:19 am

    Of course Benson knows.

  104. mctruck November 22, 2010 11:21 am

If BW inclusion is confirmed for UH’s sports maybe it might be to UH’s advantage to workout purchasing some realestate deal(s) like apartment complex, etc., which could house our athletes and coaches when they travel to California…..someplace centrally located so our teams can be transported by bus, etc., to the other schools location(s). Don’t know if it would be better financially for UH???…but, it would be a first of owning a home away from home as they say.

  105. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2010 11:21 am

    NCAA,

Seems like the media pretty much has decided for themselves that Hawaii is gone and WAC gotta expand beyond that one member.

The questions seem to be directed towards what they will do “now that Hawaii is gone”

  106. Kazz November 22, 2010 11:22 am

TCU non-football sports to WAC was an old rumor.

I wonder if the reason that the Big West negotiations have been downplayed in compairison to the MWC information is because of a potential for UH to be a FULL member with the MWC with regards to TCU’s eventual departure?

Subsidies are going to be paid no matter what.

  107. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2010 11:22 am

    mctruck,

interesting idea. when it comes to the smaller sports I can’t imagine needing more than 12-15 rooms/double occupancy right?

Might be doable if we can find a timeshare type of deal.

  108. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2010 11:23 am

    Kazz,

Apparently not a rumor anymore about WAC accepting TCU sports.

  109. Michigan Warrior November 22, 2010 11:23 am

  111. NCAA November 22, 2010 11:25 am

If I was Benson I wouldn’t be sitting on the toilet thinking that Hawaii is staying. There’s too many forks in Benson’s road and his only option is not what fork to take but to take them all. That way he’ll be right once.

  112. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2010 11:26 am

    Kazz,

I doubt MWC would ever consider us a full member unless they had no other options. The travel subsidies from the other sports are the pain in the butt for them.

Its cheaper to pay the subsidies all from Cali than to do it from Colorado, Texas, Idaho, Wyoming etc etc.

I think in this instance when MWC says “Football Only” they mean it.

  113. mctruck November 22, 2010 11:36 am

Iwonderwhythm….especially since the financial climate in realestate has changed dramatically nationwide, especially in California; UH might be able to pickup some real good realestate, maybe atleast 2-3 pieces for that matter.

  114. LizKauai m/ November 22, 2010 11:36 am

Al- thanks for the message from Florida Pat… Hope she can get on the blog now.

  115. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2010 11:43 am

So sounds like Benson is hoping and praying and hoping and praying that North Texas is going to be Hawaii’s replacement. Good luck on that one.

Once we are part of the Big West, we will have sports 9 months out of the year that will need housing in the CAL area. Then there will be those three months of recruiting for different sports and talking with coaches in the area …

Certainly would make sense to own a B&B somewhere, eh? But from one end of CAL to the other is still a 12-hour drive. Summer in the middle is 100 + degrees!

  118. PU November 22, 2010 11:47 am

  119. Kazz November 22, 2010 11:47 am

It’s a long shot for the MWC to house all of UH athletics and the subsidies will really SUCK for sure.

In the long run, I just feel shakey about being a partial/conditional member of a conference during these shady times in collegiate athletics.

No sense worrying about the MWC situation. It’s in the hands of our negotiating team. They’ve been pretty secretive to the point where everybody thought it was all about Jim Donovan until the press conference. No way will they give any indication how things are going. For now no news is just that no news.

I haven’t seen anyone mention the most intriguing line in Saturday’s article about Rockne Freitas’ role in negotiating the hand shake deal. It said he helped Stan Sheriff draw up a fifteen year plan with the goal of getting into the PAC10. Anyone interested in whatever happened to that plan?

  129. d1島 November 22, 2010 12:00 pm

Jim, I am sure you remember all those bye weeks BSU got before they play us right?

  131. al November 22, 2010 12:02 pm

so benson said technically a formal invitation wasn’t tendered from the mwc nor the bwc.

i guess the wac didn’t formally tender a football only offer to us either.

and furthermore, i guess benson won’t be getting an official release of duties from the wac.

realistically, why would north texas st or any other program wish to join the wac now?

i can see the two texas aquisitions ready to pull the plug from the wac informal invitations.

  132. al November 22, 2010 12:03 pm

  139. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2010 12:06 pm

If we get into the MWC the Hawaii Bowl may have the ability to solidify a tie in with the expanded PAC 10…wouldn’t that be something?

  140. papajoe2 November 22, 2010 12:06 pm

Benson tries to keep Hawaii in the WAC. How much did he try to keep Fresno and Reno? Maybe if they didn’t bolt and he tried to make a deal with Foise earlier, then with BYU, Utah and now TCU, then maybe MWC would be looking at Texas State, Texas SA, and North Texas.

  141. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2010 12:07 pm

    Kazz,

Mr. Freitas better have a role. I think of him as the “Special Ops”…actually his title and all that basically means he is like the special forces of the UH. He may go down as being one of the most important figures in UH sports history if this pans out correctly. Without him this may not have ever been.

#118… MIH… Some of us were stationed at Fort Ord, which is located along the central coast of California. The temperatures year round are similar to Hawaii, but about 10-20 degrees cooler throughout most of the year. Even during any semblance of a heat wave, we might’ve gotten up to the mid-80’s for highs, but that was rare. I still have some relatives and high school army friends who live there.

Since the closing of Fort Ord, Cal State University Monterey Bay has taken over several of the buildings around post. An old army buddy of mine drove out there not too long ago to video some of the locations our unit had occupied over the years. It’s basically a ghost base now, aside from the few areas occupied by CSUMB.

Macomb Community College is an excellent school in the area too. And the Monterey Peninsula Airport handled most of our air travels up and down the state, if we didn’t drive or charter a bus. We played for the grand opening of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. There used to be annual Jazz Festivals at MCC, along with annual car shows. There’s also lots of historic stuff in regards to the whaling/fishing industry.

Just going off of the top of my head and reminiscing. I know Mr. A-House doesn’t have as pleasant memories of the place as I do, but I enjoyed my time there. It used to take us about 6 hours to drive down to San Diego, and about 2 hours to go up to San Francisco.

  149. expat November 22, 2010 12:29 pm

    Top four MWC teams:

    35-10, probably 38-10 before bowls

    Top four WAC teams:

    34-8, probably 41-9 before bowls.

All four of the top WAC teams will probably be gone after next season. Two of the top MWC teams will probably be gone. All of the 8 bottom teams stay where they are 🙂

It must be very frustrating for Benson.

  157. madeinhawaii November 22, 2010 12:59 pm

    PU

Without PPV, the Athletics budget loses 2.5 million a year from the bottom line. They would have to sell out every game and still come out short. With travel subsidies, we could end up with much less than if we stayed in the WAC.

  158. madeinhawaii November 22, 2010 1:03 pm

    PU

That doesn’t include the millions that are spent annually at the establishments that show PPV games around the islands — or the generous donations that the proprietors of these establishments give to UH. Thanks to PPV, every game is being videoed professinally.

PPV and Oceanic/K5 telecasts could continue on for the Big West-sponsored sports (basketball, wahine volleyball, etc.).

However, assuming UH is subject to the current MWC TV contract once the football team moves there, then yes, football PPV and any rebroadcasts of football games would be killed, assuming UH can negotiate this with the MWC powers.

Nonetheless, in terms of negotiating power, I don’t think UH has much (yet). The TCU hub-bub may change things, though.

    IWTHM,

My point was to illustrate what made Stan Sheriff such a great AD. Forceful, forward thinking, with a can do attitude. Freitas is cut in that mold. It goes to show how much difference good leadership at the top tiers of the Athletic Dept. or any organization makes.

Another example is Keith Amemiya. What a difference he made at the helm of Hawaii high school sports. Forceful, forward thinking with a can do attitude.

  168. Not an Expert November 22, 2010 1:59 pm

I believe that the MWC has agreed to accept UH to the conference pending finalization of travel subsidies. TCU plays an important part in the subsidies due to it being the farthest distance away for most of the rest of the MWC schools. More than likely air travel to an from any of the MWC schools involving TCU makes the subsidy that UH would pay, be less. If TCU is out of the conference travel subsidies will be greater due to the fact traveling to TCU is probably the next highest air travel cost for schools going to play at TCU next to Hawaii.

In addition Las Vegas and the Boyd Group will do anything and everything to help UH gain membership. I also believe ESPN has some interest to having UH be part of the MWC. It also could be that with UH being a member of the MWC that may help to keep BYU to stay providing certain TV rights can be renegotiated before the original contract expires.

Bottom line if only UTAH leaves the MWC, it will be a 12 team league allowing for 2 divisions and a playoff. I also believe that AQ status will be higher than the Big East and be in close competition with the ACC. Also the Pac-12 should want a conference out west to be part of the BCS because it helps them to offset the east coast coalition. California is considered the 6th or 7th world largest economy.

  169. kev-1 November 22, 2010 2:01 pm

Anybody else see Benson’s offer to TCU a jab at Hawaii? Everybody knows that with TCU, the MWC is much more attractive. Sounds as if Benson is trying to help TCU cope with the football only offer from the Big East to make the MWC seem less attractive. Not that this will change TCU’s mind, but just saying.

BTW, I noticed in the article the other day about Rockne Freitas that his goal used to be to get Hawaii into the Pac-10. Does anyone still think that is part of his vision for the future?

  170. tommui November 22, 2010 2:17 pm

PU #153 – lots of handicap people depend on PPV or should they be killed too?

  171. Not an Expert November 22, 2010 2:21 pm

The heiarchy of the BCS conferences with its east coast overseers would not want the west to gain too much of a foothold. Reason why they have gotten the MWC and the WAC to get into the situation they are in. Maybe convincing the Pac-12 to take Utah and Colorado so the east can maintain their stronghold over the west. The Big East getting TCU will put both the MWC and the WAC back a decade. I always believed that is part of the plan until things are changed by the rules and laws of business and not BCS/NCAA self imposed ways they are allowed to exist. (conspiracy)?

Salas has racked up 1,390 yards and nine touchdowns so far this season.

The rumors of TCU’s non-football sports to the WAC existed before UH made their announcement last week. I think the WAC/TCU thing isn’t really a jab at UH considering Benson knows the best financial position for UH’s non-football sports is in the Big West. TCU’s non-football sports in the WAC would be a good replacement for the loss of UH.

  176. kev-1 November 22, 2010 2:39 pm

heck, if the new WAC is going to have potentially 3 schools from Texas, that might be appealing to TCU.

  177. NCAA November 22, 2010 2:47 pm

What would be more appealing to TCU, being in an AQ conference (potential AQ conference) or ease of travel? I say both. TCU should stay in the MWC for football and move to the WAC for other sports.

    Next speculation? Buy silver.

  178. Pomai November 22, 2010 3:02 pm

    A couple of things:

First anyone who puts any credence in what comes out of BC’s mouth I have a bridge I’d like to sell you. I know for a fact that their are some people at UH who will not even talk to him let alone give him any scoops. Plus the ones that do won’t give him inside scoops.

Second, there is a lot of MONEY involved with this move not just money with UHAD but big money for the UH System, one reason for the press conference the other day. There where to many questions that needed answers for those money people. UHAD brings in more money to the UH System then most people know about.

It wasn’t a single person who has gotten us to the point we are at with the change in conference affiliation it was a total team effort, just as in football, the UHAD is team, no I in team.

What is going on behind closed doors will stay there until they decide to let us know.

Us as fans and our team needs to concentrate on one thing right now and that is winning the next three games. Do not take any of them for granted, as we now have a big X on our backs.

Aiyah! CONDOLENCES TO THE TAFUNA OHANA AND Kahuku Football team…

Kahuku High Football Team mourns one of their own

KAHUKU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The body of Kahuku High School football player Keoni “Deedee” Tafuna was discovered Monday morning at his Laie home.

Word spread quickly on school campus and in the community.

The football team went to Tafuna’s home to be with his family.

Kahuku High and Intermediate School officials held an assembly to address the situation and to offer any counseling to students.

Students and teammates tell Hawaii News Now he took his own life.

if no more PPV, how we suppose to watch the games? Some of us no can go to the stadium. I get 3 small kids man! PPV supports the team too.

  193. Kazz November 22, 2010 3:58 pm

PPV is necessary no matter how anyone views it. Personally speaking, I won’t pay $50.00 per road game, ESPECIALLY when it’s a conference game and I’d prefer to go to Murphy’s or any establishment that has the PPV.

$2.5 million is a lot to make up and simple ticket sale revenue will NOT make up for it even with the PSCs and you can credit that to the hefty fee the stadium authority charges UH every year to use that facility and their services. So that is issue #1.

As Pomai mentioned, UH athletics does bring in money through ticket revenues, licensing, advertising, and merchandise but the money is not being funneled into the athletic department as one would imagine.

A LOT of things need to be re-worked ABOVE the athletic department’s heads for it all to work out for UH athletics.

It’s funny because UH’s athletic department is expected to operate on it’s own, but the revenue is going elsewhere (i.e. auxiliary services, parking office, etc…).

PPV and PSCs weren’t created for the “fun” of it.

It’s been said that sometimes the measure of a man can be made by the good deeds he does when nobody is looking. Such is the case of our very own Blogmeister.

After he made his appearance at the T-gate to award shirts to the Blog prize winners, the charity bug smacked him a good one! I just happened to notice a quiet cash contribution he made to the young ladies that were conducting a fundraiser. He gave them more than what they were asking for their product, and then told them to keep the product!

After he quietly slipped away, I asked the girls if they knew who that man was. One girl laughed and said he was too young to be Santa. Another said, “he doesn’t look like one rich guy!” Then when I told them who he wuz, they all screamed louder than jm2375’s duaghter!!

The people’s choice…you should run for office Stephen.

Kekoa… yeah, I meant MPC. For some reason, ever since I first went there for an antique auto show, I’ve called the place MCC (Monterey Community College). I don’t know if it was the name 30 years ago, or if that’s just how I called it (because of Leeward Community College).

MIH… the whole area is really nice. Don’t know if it’s gotten bad or not since the army closed the base and moved to Fort Lewis, Washington. There’s quite a few hotels in the area that would make a great home base for us if the need arises.

I know that the Defense Language Institute is still there. The Navy Postgraduate School (Naval War College) is also in the area to instruct senior military leaders.

Just a few miles down the road is Carmel By the Sea, which is where Clint Eastwood was mayor. Carmel Valley has mega homes of some rich and famous, hanging precariously over the edge of the mountains waiting for the next storm or fire.

And then there’s that whole drive through Pebble Beach, down Big Sur, all along the coast. Just don’t go speeding there amongst those hairpin turns, or you may end up donating your vehicle to the rocks and ocean down below like at Kaena Point.

Al… One thing in abundance there is the dreaded ice plant! Seemed like those plants were filled with acid or something, as they used to break and bleed onto our newly shined combat boots and waste a whole night’s worth of work polishing.

  226. madeinhawaii November 22, 2010 6:33 pm

Hmm… approaching UNT again might even backfire on Benson if you look at the last three paragraphs in that article..

Lousiana Tech officials have commented publicly in the past about a return membership to the SBC being a step down from the WAC, which angered Waters. Now, the SBC is in position to be a soft landing spot for Louisiana Tech and possibly New Mexico State, which would get the SBC to 12 football members, a divisional lineup and a televised league football championship game.

In that case, UNT, Arkansas State, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe and NMSU would make up a western division of the SBC, making regional scheduling and travel more flexible, since teams in 12-school leagues don’t play each other in football every year.

Such a scenario would leave Idaho, San Jose State and Utah State in search of a new conference or with no choice but to compete as NCAA independents or drop to the FCS in football.

Despite being located across the border from one of the deadliest cities in the world, El Paso is the safest large city in the United States, according to rankings released Sunday.

Though the city has been ranked in the top three each year since 1997, this is the first time El Paso has taken the top spot for having the lowest crime rate among cities of more than 500,000 population in the annual rankings by CQ Press, a publishing firm based in Washington, D.C.

  249. al November 22, 2010 10:28 pm

so that battle of the mules should be interesting.

what a story…one record setting quarterback who walked on while delivering pizza (okay, i know that is getting old) who was never even given a second look out of wahiawa’s high school. battling his way from near obscurity while buried in the depth charts as the qb6.

the other, a heralded signal caller who was offered a full ride from the manoa campus albeit while entering his junior season. who then holds out wishing for a big time offer from a bcs school. goes to some fancy expensive qb camp seeking further recognition which never came. spurns a last minute greyshirt offer from the home team only to land his only d1 offer at las cruces (yes, that is in the usa).

it should be fun to watch.

  250. al November 22, 2010 10:31 pm

    recruiting…

so two “big time” cali prospects come for a visit this past week.

one verbals to oregon state before he leaves hawaii.

the other has been mum so far. oh by the way he is the one that is being pursued by nebraska….and no he is not from nebraska as a head coach was quoted as saying.

  251. madeinhawaii November 22, 2010 10:31 pm

Auwe… coach Mack has fallen from #32 to #35 in less than a week.. It’s really disheartening.

    http://www.coachoftheyear.com

  252. al November 22, 2010 10:34 pm

so that head coach has been saying that he wishes not to reveal any of the commits thus far.

if i was a recruit wouldn’t it or shouldn’t it be a big deal for me to have the “ink” splashed?

  253. al November 22, 2010 10:37 pm

wouldn’t or shouldn’t having an annoucement in the honolulu daily, hometown daily, scout.com, rivals.com, espn.com, and the like be made public further seal the deal, the verbal deal.

wouldn’t or shouldn’t it further obligate that 18 year old to keeping his word????

  254. al November 22, 2010 10:39 pm

mih…methinks it will be a long time coming for any uh coach to get that kind of national recognition. well, unless our next hire is chris peterson.

I hope if we get that player pursued by Nebraska it isn’t like the other player we got from Nebraska who shall for the sake of anonymity be called L. Jackson…no no no wait wait i mean…Leon J.

The guy from what I read has some good speed and can’t complain about his height. Looks good, hope we snag um.

Seriously tho, have you noticed how the format for her show seems to shine a better light on coach? Her Q & A seems to help draw out the more laid back style of his. He is much more relaxed and confident with his comments.

    Winning does that, huh?!

Hope he heals up quick, we’ll need him.

And so sad…my thoughts are with the Tafuna and Kahuku ‘ohana. So tragic…I am glad the news outlets saw the value in reporting it, esp. before the holidays.

To any of the Warrior’s who are reading the blog, please don’t take these guys lightly, remember everyone took us lightly at the begining of the season. I know their record is not that good, but on any given saturday they can break out. You need to bring your A game for the last three games, you are marked target’s, they want to bring you down.

As my friend Pride once said:

“We are Hawaii. We are the Warriors. We have presence. We have confidence. We posture ourselves properly. When we walk into a room, we have a walk with a commanding presence.”

“They have to play their best game to beat us. We are the leaders in the WAC for the year 2010. We are in the lead in the conference. We are at the top of the conference standings.”

“They are coming onto our field to try to beat us. Yes, our field. Every field that we step onto is our field. Everything between the lines is ours. We will own the line of scrimmage, we will own the field. No matter what city we go to, we will own the field. That is our posture. That is the culture that we are building as Warriors. Teams have to play up to us.”

  268. al November 23, 2010 1:38 am

pomai…i hear your comments. but, didn’t you predict a 48-14 victory.

  269. al November 23, 2010 1:40 am

so north texas st turned down the wac offer and shall remain in the sunbelt while they await an invite from the conf-usa.

  270. Pride. November 23, 2010 2:00 am

    Stretch:

    November 1st, 2008 at 3:45 pm

I haven’t read through all the posts today but wanted to add my thoughts. During the practice on Thursday, it seemed that the team was VERY loose. It looked like they were going through the motions and were having too much fun doing so. Lots of trash talking and laughing between the offense and defense. They took Utah St lightly and when it came time to step up, they couldn’t kick it into second gear. Dropped passes, missed blocks, missed tackles and penalties are a result of a lack of concentration.

This team is NOT good enough to go into any team’s house and think they can win blindfolded.

    11-1-08

That was a very, ugly loss in the 2008 season to Utah State in Ogden. I will never forget that day. On a bad day, you still are required to be good enough.

  271. Pride. November 23, 2010 2:04 am

I don’t think that will happen to our Warriors this year. But it is always good to that football is a “lunch pail” sport. Gotta bring your “lunch pail” to work everyday. Everyday in football is a long, hard day at work. Gotta come early, come prepared, come ready to work.

  272. Pomai November 23, 2010 2:27 am

#269 – al – Yes I did, but that dosen’t mean if they take the game lightly that they will win. There are no cupcake games, you need to bring your “A” game every game, take no one lightly, they are all out to knock you off.

  273. Susan November 23, 2010 3:02 am

A toasty 22 outside. It will drop to 18 by 4 this afternoon. I do not want to know what it will be tonight. Glad my pipes are wrapped!

Hope you are keeping warm and safe!!! The crazies on the roads are going to be the biggest concern.

  277. wafan November 23, 2010 3:29 am

There are entire sections of I-5 that were shut down yesterday afternoon through this morning. Some folks are still commuting home from work yesterday. I feel sorry for them. Neighbor got home 9+ hours after leaving Ft. Lewis (usually a 40-minute drive).

As much as I dislike closing school today the district made a good call. I had to nearly use an ice-pick to scrape the ice and snow off my windows earlier this morning. My doors are frozen shut, too.

  278. wafan November 23, 2010 3:53 am

Salas not being selected as a finalist continues to demonstrate the disrespect shown the Warriors.

respectfully, I disagree – Salas is really good but he’s not a gamebreaker like the others. I’m really happy having the Salas/Pilares tandem but compared to the three finalists? It’s an honor to be among the top 10 and no disrespect to be in the final 3.

I’m speaking from experience. . i’m a great cook (not to brag)
