DeMello leaving radio show

Rob DeMello, who has emerged as one of the most creative and entertaining radio hosts, is leaving the “Rob and Russ Show.” He said the schedule  — the show runs 6 a.m.-9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays — is tough to maintain since the birth of his daughter. But he has not ruled out a return to radio in another capacity. We’ll miss his radio show, but he’ll still be around as a KITV reporter and weekend anchor.

Greg McMackin and June Jones arrived safely in American Samoa, and are leading a mission that is providing medical supplies and footbal instruction. Burt Trembly offers these photos:

But, of course, the real fun was with the blog readers — at the Tropics party last night, and then the birthday celebration for Midori7.

* * * * *

And while I’m name-dropping, Kimo Kahoano was there. His son, Haku, a former UH player, is now Dr. Haku Kahoano. He’s a military doctor overseas.

* * * * *

Also at Tropics were Michael Smith, UH’s new grad assistant, and Mike Pettine, the New York Jets’ defensive coordinator. And, of course, Wayne Harada was there.  OK, I’m done name-dropping for now.

Coach Mac sure keeps busy. I think his relentless schedule will pay dividends. We’ve already seen it with the camps — 10 recruits for 2010 and counting. I don’t think it is too early to say he was a good hire.

  18. MeiLing June 27, 2009 7:40 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka, Tsaikos!

Great to see the coaches & ex-players in Samoa. Mahalo for taking over the medical supplies.

Great pictures for a great mission.

Looks like Wie will do her standard nose dive in a 3rd round, come back strong on Sunday with nothing on the line to finish back of the pack and then say “Couple of bad shots, some putts did not fall and I played great”.

  24. warriorfanny2 June 27, 2009 8:59 am

Warrior incoming recruit Joey Iosefa from Samoa must be at that meeting. I hope Joey will also be instrumental in getting other top players to matriculate to Manoa.

pulehu meat smoking on the side
    All the surfers are a-droppin’
    while the highschool are a-poppin’

    Mission accomplished.

Section 309 behind (above?) UH bench, rows V and W, seats 1-10 in each. Less expensive than originally thought — $29/ticket (includes $5 Facility Fee). Similar to the Aloha Stadium Yellow section between the 40 yard lines.

Lower Bowl seats were on the 10 yard line and in the endzone.

$50 seats are all held/sold through UH.

Heads up: no bags larger than 12 x 12 x 12, food is okay to being in, no coolers/large bags/backpacks, no liquids.

Re Tsukiji’s – Since no one answered my questions directly which were posted yesterday here on the blog and the information was not available on their website, here is what a staffer at the restaurant told me.

The cost is $18.95 and is paid at the conclusion of the meal. Tips are not included. There are some vegetarian items served which change from day to day. The buffet does have a variety of desserts.

A quick reminder about Tuesday evening’s fundraiser for the FALLS OF CLYDE. Great food, great door prizes & silent auction items, and a great cause. Tickets are $40 of which $20 is tax-deductible. Funds raised will be used to underwrite drydocking expenses to determine what needs to be done first to preserve and then restore the ship to its former glory.

For more information and to make reservations, send an e-mail to swoodathokudotcom.

In addition to its first fund-raiser this Tuesday, the Friends of Falls of Clyde will be holding a potluck bbq and fireworks viewing on Friday, July 3 on land next to the ship. People will start to gather around 5 pm and eat starting around 6:30 or so. The fireworks show sponsored by the Aloha Tower Marketplace will start shortly after 8:30 pm.

Parking and other info about what to bring will be out within the next day or two which I can then pass on to anyone who’s interested.

NOTE: This is a family-oriented function although people are welcome to bring beer or wine.

Please e-mail me if you’re interested in attending to swoodathokudotcom

Finally, DrDoc and I are once again hosting a Family Promise summer barbecue at Nu`uanu Congregational Church on Sunday, July 12, from 5 pm to 7:30 pm. More details to come next week, but if you are a fan of church potlucks, then this is the place for you.

DD and I will be preparing three styles of barbecue chicken plus ribs. Everyone else is asked to bring pupu, salad, side dishes, or desserts for six people plus the number in your party.

Afterwards, perhaps some of you might want to go do some karaoke singing – there are several bars within a ten-minute drive.

Article about how the twitter account that was supposedly from Bess is actually being done by an impostor.

The Dolphins kicked off their final minicamp on June 12. Edgar Thompson of the Palm Beach Post tweeted at 2:51 on June 12 that he was headed out to practice at 3:15 – with practice scheduled for 3:30 that day. Thompson also tweeted about what was going on at practice at 3:33, 3:37, 3:40, and 3:42. So, clearly, the Dolphins were practicing. In fact, Thompson’s 3:40 tweet read, “Who has better hands: Camarillo or Bess? Too close to call, both don’t drop anything.”

However, the “fake Bess” tweeted on June 12 at 3:00, 3:15, 3:17, and 4:08. But wasn’t the real Davone Bess at practice at that time?

A similar event occurred on June 14, the final day of minicamp. The Dolphins had an early practice scheduled for that day. Edgar Thompson tweeted at 10:43 in the morning that practice was just beginning with stretching. But the “fake Bess” began a live chat stream on the website “ustream” at 5:49 am on June 14. He also never went to sleep before that, tweeting nonstop from 10 pm on June 13 up to his live webcast at 5:49 on the 14th. Then at 12:11 pm on the 14th, the “fake Bess” tweeted “Good morning everybody” even though practice was probably just finishing up around that time.

Oh – and on June 12 at 6:21 am – just hours before the first minicamp practice – the “fake Bess” tweeted, “Damn I got a flight to vegas @ 11am.” So why would he book a flight to Las Vegas when minicamp was just getting started?

With all that said, though, it seems like the person who is tweeting from this account claiming to be Bess has even fooled some NFL players – including Chad Ochocinco, Chris Johnson, and LenDale White – making it even harder to figure out.

Shawn Withy-Allen’s team was in first place just 3 weeks ago. Unfortunately, they lost their last 3 games, not a great way to end the regular season. Their last two losses were to the Columbus Lions and they their next game will be on the road against that same team!

After Saturday night’s game, all the Fayetteville Guard can do is brush off their second straight loss to the Columbus Lions and get ready to face them again.

That’s the task ahead, as they will travel to Columbus, Ga., on July 6 for an American Indoor Football Association playoff game.

The Guard struggled offensively and defensively Saturday, losing 44-25 at the Crown Coliseum.

Quarterback Shawn Withy-Allen couldn’t get the offense in a rhythm, only throwing for 168 yards with three interceptions.

If the Guard is to overcome Columbus, Withy-Allen will have to cut down on his turnovers. In the past three games, he has thrown seven interceptions.

The Guard has struggled on the road this season, losing four of its five games.

  83. Garret June 28, 2009 12:01 am

Warrior fans that go to the La Tech game this year will see that their football stadium has a new video scoreboard. I’d like for La Tech to continue their improvement, as that would improve the strength and respect of the WAC…it would be great for the conference if they could beat LSU this season!

Louisiana Tech University Bulldogs football team is coming off one of its most successful football seasons.

In its second season under head coach Derek Dooley, Tech enjoyed an 8-5 record in 2008, capping its season with a win over Northern Illinois in the Independence Bowl in Shreveport.

With a new video scoreboard in place, the fan experience for Bulldogs games at Joe Aillet Stadium should be better than ever.

TCU’s last couple of recruiting classes were VERY impressive, better than many BCS schools. Many highly rated recruits chose TCU over Texas A&M, Baylor, etc., and they specifically mentioned TCU’s indoor practice facility as a big factor in their decision. Now that indoor practice facility will have the AFC Champion practicing in it during Super Bowl week…that will happen around the time recruits sign their NLI!

Former Dallas Cowboys executive Gil Brandt said that regardless of the AFC representative, TCU will benefit from being the only college connected with the event.

“I think they’ll get a lot of positive recruiting things out of it,” Brandt said. “The exposure TCU is going to get will be absolutely unbelievable. The facilities they have are state of the art. Their indoor facility is fantastic, and the practice fields are fantastic.

“People won’t see them during practices because practices will be closed. But a lot of people will be coming over to grab people after practice and there is going to be a lot of talk about how great their facilities are. It can really help their program.”

The key component in TCU’s presentation to the NFL was the Sam Baugh Indoor Practice Facility, which opened two years ago. SMU was also interested in hosting one of the Super Bowl teams and it also has good facilities, too. But it does not have an indoor facility, and that is crucial in early February.

TCU also opened the Meyer-Martin Athletic Complex last year, and it has 40,000 square feet of meeting space and a players lounge that will provide ample room for an NFL team and all the functions necessary to prepare for the Super Bowl.

“Their indoor practice facility is just something that is unmatched — even outside of Texas,” said Bill McConnell, the NFL’s director of event operations. “What they have done not only on the field but off the field is visionary. They’ve got something special going on there, and we’re happy to be a part of it.”

Article examining why there were 3 million unfilled jobs in the US while 13 million are unemployed. Part of this seems to be due to a mismatch of skills, since the sectors with the most openings (education and health care) are very different from the ones that are losing the most workers, manufacturing and construction.

  86. Garret June 28, 2009 12:07 am

A big part of the problem is that a lot of people have lost jobs in the construction, finance, and retail areas and they lack the skills and training for jobs in the growing fields of education, accounting, health care, and government. The housing bust has left the unemployed frozen in place–they can’t move to get work because they can’t sell their homes.

The recession has actually been good for ice cream sales, as Americans can afford to indulge with it. Häagen-Dazs is even looking to expand with 6 more franchises in Northern California in the next 18 months, taking advantage of increasing sales and cheaper real estate options. I never realized that ice cream first took off during the Great Depression.

Jason, I’m really sorry I cannot attend your lunch on Wednesday but we’re flying back to the mainland that day.

Another *really* early offer from Mac!

“I was working while I was pregnant with him,” said Lani Correa, who has been an athletic department employee for more than two decades. “He was born to be a Warrior.”

Kamalei Correa has received a scholarship offer from the Warriors.

The offer is postdated to 2013.

That’s because Correa, who turned 15 in April, will be entering the ninth grade at Saint Louis School.

  96. Garret June 28, 2009 1:58 am

The Correas have long ties to the Warriors.

Kamalei Correa’s eldest brother, La’anui Correa, was a standout defensive end for the Warriors

Haku Correa, also a defensive lineman, will be a second-year freshman this season.

“My sons grew up on campus,” Lani said. “They’ve always been around.”

Sadly, Ferd is correct that UH doesn’t have any better option than the WAC right now. The top half of the WAC is okay, so hopefully the bottom half will raise their budgets and improve their programs so that the WAC can move up in the conference rankings.

A few long runs in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament would bring significant money and respect to the WAC…

Given the food I had for brunch and the layout of the place, I think that Tree Tops would be great for a blog bash.

  99. Garret June 28, 2009 2:12 am

Pretty cool that there will be two freshmen football players at St. Louis that have offers from UH. That could help bond them together and have them eventually decide to both come to UH…the one who first decides to go to UH (given his family history I’d guess Kamalei) will definitely be a strong recruiting force for the other!

  100. Garret June 28, 2009 2:14 am

Either way, Kalani Brackenridge will not be part of the Warrior program this Fall. He’ll either grayshirt or sign with the Tampa Bay Rays. At least the coaches will know by August 17 because of the MLB deadline.

  101. gumbo June 28, 2009 2:28 am

the kid correa is the real deal. he is already as big as his brothers and is in like 8 or 9th grade. my son plays with him. he is really gona be special.

  102. Garret June 28, 2009 2:34 am

Thank you for that insight! I’m sure that Kamalei will be very, very good by the time he finishes high school and I’m glad that UH is recruiting him hard now. Even though his Mom works for the Athletic Department and his brothers played/play for UH, there is no reason to take things for granted and the extra effort for recruiting him seems to be worth it.

  103. Garret June 28, 2009 2:35 am

I should have worded #100 differently–if Kalani grayshirts, he’s still part of the Warrior program. He just won’t get to play or practice until the Spring.

  104. gumbo June 28, 2009 2:44 am

GARRET.. i dont write here much, but was lurking… but his kid is HUGE and a step above the rest…. dont know him or the bros, but have seen him with my son…. HE IS GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  105. Pauoa Boy June 28, 2009 3:05 am

Oh nah, they already offered Kamalei one schollie. One good thing about the Correa bloodline is they get nawts when they play. La’anui was a beast and had that mean streak about him. Have yet to see Haku banging heads but hopefully he’ll be in the rotation this year on the line. Getting offered a schollie by a DIV1 College gotta say something about their talent level. Good luck to Reeve and Kamalei at St. Louis and enjoy your high school years. These boys will have four years to be groomed at the high school level and get ready for akshon once they arive on the Warrior Campus. I can see both of them being monsters by the time they get to college…scary.

  109. d1島 June 28, 2009 7:16 am

    Great Morning All!

Summer Camps at UH yield another recruit.

A little birdie says that the good and bad news in Correa’s case is he was punking O-linemen much older than him but that included another recruit.

  110. Garret June 28, 2009 7:19 am

Thank you again for the report on Kamalei! As a parent of a player his age, you’d be around to watch him play…good to know he is a step above the rest.

  111. Garret June 28, 2009 7:24 am

Good to know that Kamalei is already that good…but unfortunate for that OL recruit.
