Miss you much

Reporters were standing around yesterday, debating an uncertain future. Yes, we’re all concerned about finding replacements for Adam Leonard, Dan Kelly, Ryan Mouton, Keao Monteilh, Keala Watson, Fale Laeli and … Dylan Linkner?
Since 2005, when Colt Brennan opened our eyes and our notebooks, the Hawai‘i media have been blessed with some of the most camera-friendly speakers. Princess Leila’s Cribs-styled video with Leonard a few years was an indication of the personalities behind the facemasks.
The past four years have been the Golden Age of quotes, notes and anecdotes. There have been so many articulate characters with great observations. Most of all, these players have had a lot of fun.
They will be missed.

* * *

We’re also going to miss the parents. Dan Kelly’s dad looks like Jon Lovitz, but is way funnier. Adam Leonard’s dad also has a great personality. Dane Porlas’ dad is Mr. Friendly. I’ve never met Solomon Elimimian’s dad in person, but we’ve had great telephone conversatons the past nine years. We’ll miss seeing Keao Monteilh’s dad at practic, and getting a daily joke from Dylan Linkner’s dad.

* * *

Well, no blood donors, so if you want onarock’s extra ticket, say: “I want it,” and you’re entered in the drawing. We’ll pull a name in the 4 o’clock hour, as they say in the biz.

* * *

Happy birthday to G-Nalo, ukuleleboi and Jim Leahey.

    Morning Chef,
    Morning everyone.

We will definitely miss this group. These guys went through a lot. Especially these past 2 years and it couldn’t be more sweeter when we finish this season with a win against the Pussycats and whoever dare come to the islands for a Christmas Eve date with us. Let’s pray that everyone of these guys get PT tomorrow. Good Luck to all of them where ever they land because where ever you go, Hawaii will be in your heart and a part of our soul.

Big time Mahalo from the bottom of this Chef’s heart to the Warrior Senior Class of 2008. Mahalo!!

hope the OT’s are up to the challenge tomorrow night. bring your a-game boyz. what a great group of seniors we’ll be honoring tomorrow. would’ve been nice to see last year’s slots still around but it’s so good to see RGM succeeding in the CFL and of course Davone w/ the fish. Bruddah’s doing so well might have to put him in da starting fantasy lineup this weekend.

    go warriors and mules!!!

Next year, the Sugar Bowl stories told by the Juniors and Seniors will seem like a ‘tall tale’ of sorts as most did not really play in the game. The players will tell the tale… the newbies will ask..”Wow. Awesome. Did you get to play?” The story teller will say…”No, but I was there.”

We will miss all of the seniors…the past 3 years especially have been very successful and memorable. Two Hawaii Bowls and a Sugar Bowl bid is a nice 3-year run.

Before this season, Cincinnati had not won a conference title in 44 years!

Cincinnati enjoyed a fine season in 2007, finishing with a 10-3 record and a win in the Papajohns.com Bowl, but the Bearcats’ history suggested that might be the exception, rather than the norm. Subsequently, Cincinnati was projected for fifth place in the 2008 BIG EAST preseason media poll.

Those expectations, coupled with fluidity at the quarterback position, make Cincinnati’s 2008 season remarkable. The Bearcats defeated Syracuse 30-10 last Saturday to improve to 6-1 in the BIG EAST to clinch the conference’s automatic bid to the Bowl Championship Series. Cincinnati won the BIG EAST title outright and captured its first conference championship of any kind since it won the Missouri Valley Conference title in 1964.

News about a JC WR recruit.

Laney College (Calif.) standouts Troy Evans and Travis Ford have received strong western-based Division I-A interest. Evans ranks among the nation’s most diverse offensive and special teams threats, while Ford is a speedy free safety.

Last season, Evans averaged 162 yards total offense a game, ranking sixth among California junior college players. The 5-foot-9, 210-pound athlete totaled 407 rushing yards, 268 receiving, 224 on punt returns and 559 on kickoffs.

Evans earned All-American honors in 2007, averaging 13 yards on punt returns and 30 on kickoff runbacks. He averaged 12.4 yards on punt returns in ’08. Arizona, Hawaii, Kansas State, Oregon and Wyoming have offered Evans, who has been timed at 4.45 seconds in the 40-yard dash.

Navy’s head coach used to sell programs at Aloha Stadium.

Niumatalolo sold programs at University of Hawaii games as a youngster. He quarterbacked the Warriors in the late 1980s before beginning his coaching career as a Hawaii graduate assistant. He made only $400 a month, with a wife who worked and a baby girl, and struggled to make ends meet.

He was fired during his first go-round at Navy but returned to the academy in 2002 after being hired by Johnson, for whom he played at Hawaii. Niumatalolo learned the most intricate details of Johnson’s unique triple-option offense during that time, and did very little, if anything, to change things after taking over.

“This is his offense,” Niumatalolo said.

The Mids lead the nation in rushing, averaging 292.0 yards, and are vying to be the top rushing team in Division I-A for the fourth straight season. As a result, Niumatalolo will become the third Navy head coach in the last 60 years – joining Wayne Hardin and Gary Tranquill – to lead the team to a winning season in his first year.

  19. Garret December 5, 2008 8:55 am

Analysis of the UH-Cincinnati game by a sports picking site.

Cincinnati has been a model of consistency on offense this season. They’ve averaged just over 27 points per game and are doing a solid job moving the ball down the field. They are putting up 380 yards per game, and though the running game has been a bit slow, with just 120 yards per game, but the they’ve made up for it with a very solid passing game that churns out 260 yards per game. What’s impressive is that they’ve done it against some pretty solid defensive squads.

On defense the Bearcats have been very good all season, especially against the run. They are racking up 315 yards per game, but only 109 of those yards come on the ground. On the season overall, Cincy gives up just 19.8 points per game. There defense is a big reason why they’ve been successful this year. This week they face a Hawaii team that has only had moderate success on the offensive side of the ball. Cincinnati gets a ton of respect as 7.5 point favorites in Hawaii.

  20. Rob25 December 5, 2008 8:55 am

    Can I make Top 20?

  21. Garret December 5, 2008 8:56 am

Discussion about UH plays much better at home.

Hawaii plays particularly well at home on offense, so expect them to be on their “A” game against the Bearcats this week.

Defensively, Hawaii hasn’t been been great on the whole, but they are a much different team, especially on defense when they play at home. On the Island, the Warriors are holding opponents to 18 points per game and an impressive 284 total yards per game. This week they’ll face a Cincinnati offense that has been extremely effective all year. Luckily for them, they’ll get to face the Bearcats on their home turf. The Warriors are 7.5 point underdogs at home this week.

Cincinnati has had tremendous success this season, but they are on dangerous turf playing far away from home against a Hawaii team that defends their home field extremely well. Both teams would love to score a victory in this situation, but odds makers are giving Cincinnati a lot of respect by making them a 7.5 point favorite on the road. Tough call either way on this one, but the Bearcats have been the better team from top to bottom this year.

  22. Garret December 5, 2008 8:58 am

Analysis about Bess by this Fantasy Football site.

Bess’ numbers in Miami clearly haven’t approached his college numbers, but he has looked strong since taking over for Camarillo in Week 12. In 30 receptions this year, Bess has racked up 359 yards and reached the end zone once. Eleven of those receptions and 171 yards have come during the past two weeks.

On the season, Bess has been targeted 46 times – or on 6.4 percent of all plays. However, since entering the starting lineup in Week 12, Bess has been targeted on 16.0 percent of plays. For comparison, Camarillo was targeted on 11.9 percent of plays before he was injured, so Bess’ numbers might settle closer to that level.

Bess has a trio of fairly attractive matchups, the best of which would appear to be against the San Francisco 49ers. Their numbers have been awful against the pass this season, and they’ve easily allowed the most yards per game to opposing receivers in the past month. Only the Kansas City Chiefs, owners of the NFL’s second worst run defense, present a truly unfavorable matchup.

    Fantasy football outlook

Bess has melded seamlessly with quarterback Chad Pennington over the past two weeks, leading the team’s tight ends and wideouts in targets and accounting for better than 80 receiving yards in each game. Bess is someone that deserves immediate consideration in all leagues as a low-end No. 3 receiver of flex play, while those in point-per-reception formats should bump him up a little.

ST- you got that right. We’ll really miss these guys! AND their family members. Beowulf comes to mind – and seeing Patek still on the sidelines was fantastic.

Adam Leonard’s parents were a treat to meet on the SB trip too.

BTW- are we Tsai-kos going to give some special little something to the Seniors?

  24. Garret December 5, 2008 8:59 am

    Morning/after noon Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister,

at least I know it wasn’t my computer. Feels weird not to be able to get on the blog. It’s almost like a wife locking you out of the house.

    ST,

Very nice musings about all the parting players and people around them.

For us fans, every year it’s the same feeling of parents, seeing their kids go off to live their own lives. Almost every year we feel the same about the senior group leaving. This Year it seems more pronounced, because there are so many quality guys.

Hopefully the new groups coming in will live up to their legacy and take this thing to a higher level. We do have a great father figure in McMackin, he can do it.

Unless the Triple Chocolate Cake is there before we leave, I am sure that it will be all gone by the time we get back.

Will be making my updated prize-winning Double-Frosted Boubon Brownies for the SHB T-Gate. I went with three different kinds of frosting when I made them last weekend and decided to keep the addition. FYI” The alcohol in the bourbon evapoates but the taste remains.

Al… Sofele looks like a player, too. I like the second half of his highlights better than the first since he shows what he can do when there’s some heat. Lots of recruits just show themselves running through huge holes or on a breakaway. This doesn’t really show us what a guy can do on the next level where defenders are faster, tackle better and the yards are harder to get.

Er … anybody else running IE7 getting a security certificate error?

“To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has blocked this website from displaying content with security certificate errors.”

It’s a standard error message, but why in the world is it appearing on the blogs now? This is new …

  88. Jason December 5, 2008 2:04 pm

Ah, here we go. This is what Firefox tells me:

You have attempted to establish a connection with “core.insightexpressai.com”. However, the security certificate belongs to “a248.e.akamai.net”. It is possible, though unlikely, that someone may be trying to intercept your communication with this web site.

  96. Izzy December 5, 2008 2:30 pm

    Of interest to some Tsaikos–

On December 5, 1933: At 5:32 p.m. EST, Utah became the 36th state to ratify the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, repealing the 18th Amendment.

  97. Jay December 5, 2008 2:31 pm

Congrats to Manti Te’o for receiving the Butkus award.

  98. homey December 5, 2008 2:35 pm

  99. homey December 5, 2008 2:39 pm

Interesting that Utah ratified it while some moonshine states didn’t.

  100. d1島 December 5, 2008 2:43 pm

    Wet t-shirt Contest?

Stretch can just show up in his Mr. Incredible suit!

  101. oxymoron December 5, 2008 2:44 pm

a boatload of recruits are visiting this weekend…and during my lunchbreak, I saw a few players riding back to campus, probably from St. Louis so safe to guess that todays’ practice/walk-through was held there.

  102. Izzy December 5, 2008 2:45 pm

I think Utah saw the potential reveues…

  103. d1島 December 5, 2008 2:45 pm

I’d never say it to his face, but phonetically…. 😯

  104. lilmermaid December 5, 2008 2:49 pm

    Aloha Tsaiko-land!

We’re going to the game tomorrow, our 2nd one ever! We may stop by the t-gate if my babe can get off work early.

We’re sitting in the Orange South endzone. Gotta wear white right?

    Good luck Warriors! 🙂

  108. homey December 5, 2008 2:54 pm

  115. madeinhawaii December 5, 2008 3:06 pm

Thought I would go look at Gametracker on the Wahine Volleyball matchup tonight.

It’s two hours before the game and Hawaii has “No season stats available for this team.” While Belmont’s is up. Which side goofed up?

curveball- I am seeing Kristin’s beautiful face in my mind and have been praying for your contentment with His Will. You are immersed in an ocean of love and nothing can harm you!

    How amazing – Tsai-ko power.
A couple of watermelons and some chili pepper water ago we had not yet met. And then you won a ticket to the Warriors game!
Now you have a family that is closer than some blood relations can be. This is the way the whole world will be someday. We are the lucky ones to experience aloha in our lifetimes.

    GO WARRIORS!

    homey,

Pops Leahey said on the radio this morning it’s his 66th B-day,
G’nalo, on the other hand, will probably vehemently deny that he’s 50-something.
Ukuleleboi (btw-Happy Birthday!) will probably, in the right circumstance, try to claim that he is in his early 20’s 😉

  120. homey December 5, 2008 3:10 pm

I’ll be there with the family and hope to see some fellow tsaiko’s there.

  173. Akule50 December 5, 2008 5:35 pm

I just read through this thread (after watching the Wahine Volleyball, Live) and noticed that some of you might not know that you can watch the Wahine Volleyball sub-regional matches “Live” from NCAA_TV online-stream (CBSsports.com).

If this link (“click here”) doesn’t work, click on my online name. Scroll to the bottom and click… “Watch Live”.

You just need to install the MS Silverlight 2.0 player when prompted… if it’s not already installed.

USC is playing “Live”, right now… San Diego won the first set.

Speaking of seniors, the other paper’s reporting that Daniel Libre is looking into one more year of eligibility, which would be a huge plus for the team. How realistic a shot does he have at the extra year? Anyone know the circumstances of his eligibility clock?

*****If anyone didn’t read my late night post last night*****

ST and everyone else interested in UH’s recruiting:

My Co-worker just told me last night that he’s gonna be sending over highlight tapes of his son(s) to UH. They’re known as the Carr brothers, out of Oak Grove High School (11-1) in San Jose, Ca. Oak Grove’s season ended last week in the CCS Semifinals, losing to Valley Christian (10-2) 23-20. Omari is a RB and his twin brother Jabari is a DB. From what he was telling me, Jabari has been getting letters from PAC-10 schools, not too sure about Omari. Google them or look them up on scouting websites… Either one of them, of not both of them, would be a good catch for Hawaii…

*Update: Omari went under the radar due to an injury his Junior year. They both were asked to move up to Varsity their Sophomore years but only Jabari went up. If Omari went up, he would have had to play behind solid starter Nick Gardner for 2 years.

[Omari Carr – 5′9 170, averaged 176.8 yards per game, 11.31 yards per carry, scored 29 TDs.]

Omari piled up all of his stats in 11 1/2 games this season. He sustained a foot injury in 2nd qtr. of the CCS Open Div. Semifinal game. He hopes to be back for the All-Star game in July… Jabari is one of California’s best DB’s…

Pardon me for including all this info on the Carr brothers, it’s just that I’ve essn these boys play and they’re extremely talented. I’d love to see them play for Hawaii…

“San Jose (Calif.) Oak Grove safety Jabari Carr was the MVP of the Oakland UnderArmour/Scout.com Combine last weekend, with excellent testing numbers and a great performance in the drills and 1-on-1s.”

Here’s an article from earlier this season:

    Re-post from the other day!!

As some of you know awhile back I started a project called “University of Hawaii Sports History” it was intended to cover the history of all of the sport programs of the university from the beginning to now. Well during the last blog strike I kind of got distracted, but now I am back at work on the project. I have long thought that there should be a website that you could go to an find out information on all the previous sports program of UH, sad to say there wasn’t any, there are a few sites that have bits and pieces but none that covers all the teams.

This is a huge undertaking that will more than likely never get completely done, but at least it’s a beginning.

There are two major disadvantages in doing this project, first being here in West Virginia and two being on dial-up (the dial-up is the worst), I have created two site’s the first is the actual history website and the other is a forum where I hope to gather any information that others may want to share about past teams and athletes. I am also working on a “Where are they Now page” for all of the athletes who played for the University.

I will be re-posting this comment every few days so that all on the blog members will see it (that is if ST doesn’t mind?) and possibly share what ever they know.

Right now I have been working on the football team of 1978 and the Wahine Volleyball team of 1976.

    1978 team

This page is not completely done but you can get an idea of what things will look like.

  232. Garret December 5, 2008 10:59 pm

Chris Petersen took the Mississippi State job?

BREAKING NEWS: Sources Confirm, Chris Petersen to Mississippi St

Remember, we told you about Lane Kiffin before anyone else (Sorry; ESPN, Rival, FoxSports, SI).

You can take this to the bank. Boise State’s Chris Petersen, will be the new head coach at Mississippi State University. The official announcement could come as soon as the completion of the SEC Title game. More later, when information becomes available.

  233. Garret December 5, 2008 11:00 pm

Looks like that site was wrong.

Chris Petersen, the head football coach at Boise State, issued a statement in regards to the rampant rumors that he was leaving the university for Mississippi State University. You just cannot trust blogs, Kirk Herbstreit and Chris Mortensen for breaking news.

We probably raised the hopes of many in Mississippi and now they are crushed (I have been telling my *cough* source *cough* for weeks that Brian Kelly would be a better fit anyway).

Many in Idaho are feeling like they need to shake us down after putting them into a frenzy.

  234. Garret December 5, 2008 11:02 pm

Idaho TV station confirmed the offer but reported that Petersen denied he accepted the $9 mil offer.

A Mississippi television station cited sources inside Mississippi State University’s Athletic Department that Petersen has been offered a four-year contract worth almost $9 million. Our affiliate in Jackson, Mississippi, WAPT, told Today’s Channel 6, Petersen met with school officials in Denver to discuss the open position. MSU’s coach, Sylvester Croom, stepped down last week.

  235. Garret December 5, 2008 11:05 pm

Remember the parallels between how HF handled JJ’s contract and how Texas Tech’s AD handled Mike Leach’s contract? It turns out that the relationship is so bad that Mike Leach made it clear that he doesn’t want to talk to the AD while his contract is being negotiated!

Tech’s decision not to rework his contract before the season left Leach feeling slighted and wondering if, and to what degree, he was really wanted here. So he struck out for Seattle this week, brazen enough not to apprise his superiors, and leaving Tech fans feeling like the Peanuts gang in “Snoopy, Come Home.’’

Athletic director Gerald Myers acknowledged Wednesday learning that Leach didn’t want to talk to him in the negotiations.

  236. Garret December 5, 2008 11:06 pm

The Army-Navy game will look very different this year!

Army football players will have a new look for the Army-Navy game Saturday.

Army will trade in its gold helmets for camouflaged ones. Players will also wear camouflaged pants.

Nike made new blankets for the Army mules to match the new uniforms.

There’s also talk of the jerseys being different too. My guess would be a camouflage jersey, similar to what the San Diego Padres wear for a few of their games. But that’s just a guess.

  237. Pomai December 5, 2008 11:07 pm

    Sorry that didn’t work !!!

Long Beach Poly was down 10-0 in their playoff game, but they came back to win 20-10.

Lakewood led 10-0, Poly missed a field goal and fumbled inside the Lakewood 20. It was tied 10-10 with little more than three minutes left in the game.

    No problem.

“The game’s all about momentum,” said linebacker George Daily-Lyles, who recovered a critical fumble in the third quarter. “You just have to take the momentum back. It’s sort of what we live on. We like living on the edge.”

  239. Garret December 5, 2008 11:12 pm

Continued prayers and wishes for Kristin, Curveball, and family.

With Buffalo’s win over Ball State, the Bulls accepted an invitation to play in the International Bowl in Toronto. To be able to play in a bowl game located less than two hours away must be great for their fans, as this will be their first bowl game since moving up to 1-A (FBS). Congrats to their program on a successful season! I suggest they hurry up in extending Turner Gill’s contract before bigger fish come to take him away.

It was a very packed stadium tonight. Mauka side was for Ratfird fans in the early game. Leilehua took over after.

Iolani & Punawho shared the makai toilets. The fans cheered loudly for each worthy play, and they exploded when a sparkling defensive play was made.

My EIS pahtna estimated the crowd to be 35,000 strong, give or take a BudLite.

badly need your help. You have to have funny faces and words, you can’t just have words. It is a powerful thing, and I think that’s why it’s hard for people to imagine that women can do that, be that powerful.
I am from Ukraine and learning to write in English, please tell me whether I wrote the following sentence: “And you can do it any time of the day or night, which makes this a great business to start part time.”

    Thank 🙁 Raimund.
