Gib Arnold

Advertiser writers Dayton Morinaga and Ferd Lewis are reporting that Gib Arnold is expected to be named the new UH head basketball coach, as soon as tomorrow.

* * * * *

The Board of Regents’ instructions were very specific: The athletic department should be run like a business.

As a result, five-year plans are being crafted, buzz words such as “under-funded” have replaced “debt” in power-point presentations, and Bob Nash was not retained as head basketball coach. Business decision, you know.

And because the coaching change  was a business decision — and, not, say, a basketball decision — it makes sense that an advisory committee contains key business leaders.

Which brings us to this: Which of the interviewed candidates would be best for business?

Which hire will boost preseason ticket sales? Who can bring in supplemental money, such as through sponsors or lucrative shoe deals? For instance, football coach Greg McMackin was instrumental in UH’s deal with UnderArmour.

It will be interesting to see how the next hire will impact the bottom line.

Happy Aloha Friday! I’ve been looking forward to today for a while. Men’s VB tonight!! Gotta love it. The girls and I will be there tonight and tomorrow.

Still sulking about my team losing yesterday. They should be even better next year with everyone coming back and the strengthening of the bench. Hopefully no one decides to leave early.

This morning was the annual AUW Executive Breakfast at my company. The execs cooked breakfast for the employees as a fundraiser for AUW. Pretty good breakfast for $5.

It was a bittersweet second day of the Chevron Spring Fling Softball Tournament as #13 CAL did what they do well against our weaknesses in the infield. That was the bitter part. It was sweet that our batters led by Kelly Majam and Melissa Gonzalez took the aluminum to Lipscomb’s ACE, who’s ridiculous ERA of below 1.00 was smashed into the UH tennis complex along with those now infamous yellow orbs the tennis players have really come to hate this season. Both Ricketts and Parnaby did their jobs in their respective games.

Other than CAL’s ability to run, there is not much too impressive to speak of. Yes, their pitcher did very well against out batters in shutting them down, but we’ve been down that path before. Tonight, at 6pm (non-televised) we get a second crack. I’m pau harping on the infielding miscommunications and breakdowns. At this time of the season the team knows their weakness and it’s in the hands of the coaching staff and the players to make the corrections.

all of the not so magnificent seven do not have any star quality and will not make an immediate impact to the bottom line.

I think at this point, the fans are looking for just a fresh new face. In the eyes of many, or should I say most, a mainland coach/assistant from a program like a St. Mary’s, USC, Gonzaga, etc… will draw enough interest to make the opening game’s attendance figures spike in comparison to our season average last year.

How they maintain or further increase the attendance lies on that new hire and his staff.

Some people I talk to have no preference in the reported candidates…. Just someone “new”.

Only caught the end of the 3rd set and all of the 4th set of last night’s exhibition game. Me, Ralph, and Pomai headed in and sat in the student section. Arizona looked horrible and we looked like we were in midseason form at that point, but it’s exhibition so all assumptions get tossed out the door.

Kanani Danielson was her usual self and she appears to be leaner (if that’s possible) and stronger and Brittany Hewitt appears to be faster a bit.

Was nice to see Alex Griffiths and Kristina Kam in action and Corrine Cascioppo looked like she had a neck issue as trainers were working on her upper back or neck in the 4th set.

Stephanie Brandt made a cameo and looks like she never missed a beat at all. Even got some kills too!

Kristina Tuaniga was sort of in uniform but I don’t think she played.

Chanteal Satele looks so much like her mom! She looked very good and powerful last night.

And whatever is bothering Alexis Forsythe seems to be lingering. She was in street clothes last night on the bench and poor girl looked like she should have been in bed resting.

Good solid crowd for an exhibition. Around 1,800 I’d guess.

No doubt, the better choice is Arnold.

He has broad contacts here locally in the business community, and will energize and expand the base of supporters for this program.

Te basketball program is moribund. In need of an infusion of exceitment and financial support.

Riley has controlled the program for 2 decades and his fingerprints are all over it. He has taken his core group as far as it can go, and it has stagnated.

You need someone that will energize people to expand that core base of supporters, and of a different demographic (younger).

Arnold is the guy to do that because he has personal ties with money here and people in the community that go back 20 years. The other guy does not. He may re-energize the old base – because Riley is trying to light a fire to them but that model is not sustainable. He will not tap into the vital 25-45 demographic and expand the base.

With all due respect to Coach Riley – it is time to let go of this program. You already got to say who your successor was. And we saw where that got us.

Why does he get to pick who the sucessor after that is.

Mr. Donovan, please do the right thing and pick Arnold.

The regents are using fuzzy logic. Yes, it might have been a business decision to fire Nash (vs personal) because he could not field a good competitive basketball team that would draw fans.

A basketball coach must be able to recruit, form a team to take advantage of its strengths and have the team play like a team and winning will come. Unfortunately, Nash was not able to do this.

So to say that businessmen are needed to evaluate the new coach is simply ludicrous. If so, why not hire a businessman to coach the team?Fans will not support a losing team, even if the team has lots of outside money to spend.

    COLT WATCH:

    http://blog.redskins.com/2010/03/19/colt-brennan-sees-a-familiar-situation/

…Brennan’s sometimes laid-back SoCal-by-way-of-Hawai’i attitude makes it easy to forget that he hasn’t really had anything easy, at any point in his football career. “Remember,” he says, “I’m a kid that walked on at Colorado, bounced back to a junior college, walked on at Hawai’i, and the whole time everyone said ‘Not good enough, not good enough, not good enough.’ Some coach — Coach [June] Jones — stepped in; he saw talent, he saw something in me. He gave me that opportunity, and I took it and ran with it.”

Brennan often talks a mile a minute, but here he stops for a moment and considers his current situation. “I’m looking for the same thing right now,” he says. “I’m looking for a coach to look at me, see something in me, and give me that opportunity. And that’s exactly what I’m gonna do: I’m gonna take it and run with it. This is the same way I had to enter college. The same way I had to enter high school ball. It isn’t hard for me to have to work for it.”…

  36. RupertDaStupert March 19, 2010 10:19 am

We don’t have pro sports here. The UH is the only big sports in town. Our hire is not a normal hire. If you hire a head coach for USC, Washington State, Georgetown, it’s for that county. Our hire has the interest of the whole state. Our coach shouldn’t only be a coach, because of our isolated position in the middle of the Pacific, he has to know how to promote. To draw national/international attention it doesn’t hurt to be flamboyant. Maybe even know how to throw in some plublicity stunts. Innovations. Flamboyant baseball franchise owner once said, “All I ever said is that you can draw more people with a losing team, plus bread and circuses, than with a losing team and a long, still silence.” Because of our unique global position it would not hurt to have a coach who is a teacher of men not only in sports, but in the values of life. Abe Lemons quotes, “Doctors bury their mistakes, but mine are still on scholarships”. “I’m not playing my favorites, all my favorites have graduatedk.” “We don’t pray after a game, that’s too late.” “Finish last in your league and they call you “Idiot”. Finish last in medical school and they call you Doctor”. Jellybean has all the qualities of Abe Lemons and Bill Veeck.

    {The Board of Regents’ instructions were very specific: The athletic department should be run like a business.}

What successful business has a Board of Regents to micromanage them. And why does only the athletic department have to be run like a business? Why not run the rest of the campus like a business. Of course the reason is that this is a college campus whose goals are different from a for-profit business. Let me be specific. Let’s fire the Board of Regents and replace them with people who understand this.

Elvis Presley’s manager Colonel Tom Parker used to paint sparrow’s yellow and sell them as Canaries. The first 500 fans to the Stanley will receive free boxes of Joe and Kobe Jellybeans. Jellybeans connection brings in free Nike shoes and clothing equipment to UH athletic department. Kobe donates 3 million dollars to the UH athletic department. Listen up people. The winner of the drawing at halftime at today’s BB game will have a 10 minute one on one with Kobe Bryant. Anyone sinking just one basket against him will win a free ten day vacation to Las Vegas. #39 Old Diver,
I agree. Maybe Marion Higa should take a look at the UH system as it applies to athletics. Someone with no hidden agenda, no outside pressure, no political ties. I’ve never heard any department say that her report was helpful and they will try to improve. It is always excuses, excuses, excuses. “Not my fault”. “She doesn’t know what she is talking about”. She takes a lot of shots but as someone once said, if they shooting at you, you must be doing something right.

UH football program was a club team in the early 60’s and I believe the UH even thought of dropping the sport. It took fervent efforts by UH fan Dr. Larry Price and others to keep the sport alive. One year as HC by the father and creator of the modern T formation did not hurt UH. There was even a point UH baseball was in a club sport position till Les Murakami put his heart and soul into elevating UH baseball to NCAA status again. My desire for Jellybean is not because I like him, know him, etc. I just know we need a good promoter, hopefully someone with name value, a former NBA veteran would help promote and it doesn’t hurt to a have a weallthy son who may donate millions. I say may. But the possibilities are endless. My concern is for the UH. I want to see the program revived. I want to see someone I believe who has the best chance to revive it.

Every major corporation which sells its shares to the public on one of the stock exchanges has a board of governors/trustees/directors – at least in the United States. These for-profit boards along with ones overseeing huge revenue-generating non-governmental organizations such as the Salvation Army and United Way share the same goals as the UH Board of Regents: To operate in a financially-responsible way.

The Board of Regents ultimately oversees the administration of HUNDRED OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS in federal, state, and private sector grants as well as patent income revenues It oversees the income & outgo of HUNDRED OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS in tuition, fees, and profit-making activities such as parking services, facilities rentals, and concession revenues on the UH Manoa canpus alone.

To expect the UH Department of Athletics to operate in a financially-responsible and legally-appropriate way is something I strongly support.

Marion Higa has done UH studies before. Click here http://www.state.hi.us/auditor/SearchReports.html and then scroll down the page to the alphabetical listing. NOTE: Auditor Reports go back to 1990.

  74. Garret March 19, 2010 1:39 pm

Since so many people on the blog are advocating for Joe Bryant, let me take the other side of the issue. I’ve read the pro-JB points constantly repeated over the past week so I’ll try to address some of them here:

    1. If you say you trust in JD then you cannot say for certain that JB is the best choice because JD has shown that JB is such a poor candidate that he isn’t even going to get an interview. JD has seen all the applications and the posters here have not, so I don’t see how so many people can conclude that JD is completely wrong on this issue and still claim to trust in JD when he has more factual information than them.

    2. Is JB even qualified for the UH job? If he doesn’t have a college degree he isn’t qualified. JB believed so much in education that he apparently left LaSalle a year early for the NBA and his son completely skipped college.

    3. The parallel’s with JJ and JB are *really* stretching it. JJ was a head coach in the NFL when UH hired him, and the Chargers were offering him more money to be their coach. JB has never even been an assistant coach in the NBA. The WNBA is a professional league below the CFL in terms of budget and competitiveness and is NOT comparable with the NFL.

Remember, JJ was a head coach at the highest level when he was hired by UH. JB was fired from the WNBA 3 years ago, and the WNBA is nowhere near the level of the NBA. To claim that recruits will be wowed by being a former WNBA coach like JJ wowed recruits by his NFL credentials is really stretching it.

    4. How badly does JB want the job? Has anybody heard of him campaigning for it, having him talk to the Hawaii media to plead his case? Does he really want the job or does he just want his name out there to help him get some other job?

    5. For those counting the millions that Kobe will donate if UH hired JB, and I’ve seen that claim posted numerous times, when has Kobe ever expressed interest in helping JB’s coaching career? JB is a proud man and wants to be seen as making it on his own…which would mean that he would NOT want Kobe to donate money to a school he coached at to avoid claims that he bought the job.

    6. For those counting the millions that a shoe company would throw at UH if they hire JB, see #5. Also, all shoe companies care about is having their shoes shown on national TV and to get future NBA players used to wearing their shoes. The fan base, national exposure, and record of NBA players means that UH will not magically get a big shoe deal no matter who they hire.

    7. For those claiming JB would be a great recruiter, what is that based on? Has he ever shown the desire to fly around the country to recruit high school athletes? Can he sell the unique nature of Hawaii without understanding it himself? Does ANYTHING on his professional record show that he can be a closer as a recruiter?

In fact, recruiting is one reason why JB should be crossed off everybody’s list. UH is looking at current college coaches because coaches have to pass the NCAA test before they can recruit. JB has had *no* background for decades with the NCAA rule book and it has changed tremendously since the last time he was involved in college basketball. That means that even if he was hired right away, he would not be able to recruit for a long time…pretty much guaranteeing an empty recruiting class this year. With the holes on the team now due to roster losses, that guarantees that next season will be disastrous and the fan base will quickly turn against JB. A bad season will also end JB’s credibility with recruits, who will then see him as someone who hasn’t coached in college forever and doesn’t understand the college game. Look at what Nash’s first season struggles did to his tenure at UH. Other candidates for UH are currently involved in recruiting with their current teams and already have the pipelines and evaluations done for the players they might bring to UH…JB has NOTHING to go on in evaluations and cannot even recruit until he satisfies NCAA guidelines.

    8. For those claiming that JB will bring in the crowds, that is *really* stretching things. Hawaii fans will go to the games if the team wins and is at least competitive against good competition. JB is *not* a name that could bring out the crowds.

I went to many of the Lakers games that Magic Johnson coached. He was a great player but *not* a great coach. Clyde Drexler was a big name (much bigger than JB) when he was hired…and showed that he could not coach at the college level. Losses early in the first season will negate any benefit from a “big name” like JB.

I’ll end my rant with this: I do *not* see how people can claim that they support JD while also concluding that they know more than him about who UH should pick as the next men’s basketball coach…when they haven’t seen the applications and talked to the candidates like JD has.

  75. Pomai March 19, 2010 1:40 pm

Old Diver, it cracks me up that the BOR has the ala’s to tell JD to run it like a business, because if they really believed that then they would fire themselves because they sure don’t make the calls for UH as a business.

  80. Ralph March 19, 2010 1:52 pm

Coolen started the season with 637 wins, starting his 20 season as HC. He has won 2 WAC titles, 1 Big West and lead team to 7 NCAA appearances in 19 completed seasons as UH HC. The WAC has been Fresno State and the rest of the amigos, including UH, for a number of years, and the WAC rarely receives multiple invitees to the NCAA selection. A few years ago, the WAC received 4 slots-FSU, La Tech, Nevada and UH, but that was a rarity. So UH got to win the WAC or beat the powers to be, and they haven’t done it yet. They need to beat CAL tonight and tomorrow.

  81. d1島 March 19, 2010 1:52 pm

Boy, this “ain’t rocket science” but it’s sure interesting when one chimes in! 🙂

  82. Ralph March 19, 2010 1:53 pm

Na Wahine has 53 homers in 30 games to date, lots of power, high slugging percentage, a .297 BA as a team, but these numbers have come against lesser opponents.

  83. Pomai March 19, 2010 2:02 pm

One problem with the new hire for the MBB is that we won’t see the results for at least two years or longer. The cry will be the same as for any other coach hire, we need to see how he/she does with his recruits before we judge them.

  84. Kazz March 19, 2010 2:03 pm

    Ralph,

2nd time has been the charm so far sans UW. But CAL is no UW. Other than their base running capitalizing on our infield errors, CAL is beatable more beatable than what their #13th ranking suggests as they post a similar win loss record against ranked teams as we do. CAL doesn’t have that long ball threat and they’d be content with bunting and slapping all day long which will work out for them if we continue to make unnecessary mistakes.

Last night if we played a little cleaner we’d be looking at a 2-0 or even a 1-0 game up until late into the innings as you mentioned.

  85. mctruck March 19, 2010 2:05 pm

After some thought of those seeking the HC bb job; I think afte doing some research….that Ray Giacolletti/Associate HC at Gonzaga might be the ticket. He’s been successful as a hc at other programs, even when he was an assistant he’s been instrumental to the success of the program.
At Gonzaga, where he’s been since 2007, it’s said that he and Mark Few are like two peas in a pod….their very tight.
The way I look at it….Giacolletti has been with a program which has ranked in the top 20-25 teams in the country consistantly, and his players speak very highly of him as a coach.

  86. Ralph March 19, 2010 2:05 pm

In UH losses, hitting discipline is a problem, too many Ks. Against Cal the batters were fishing for pitches below their knees. Drops/sinkers and risers are very effective against Na Wahine, maybe too aggressive in pitch selection. UH Ks by team: Washington 9/15 both Losses; DePaul 8/13 split; Oregon 10 loss; Ok State 6 loss; Ga Tech 4 loss; Stanford 8/10 split; Mc Neese 11 loss, first game of season. I also note that Na Wahine won’t go with the pitch, all pull hitters, the better coached teams are working the outside corner all night long, mixing pitches up and down the zone. I keep telling Kazz, the girls can’t pull an outside pitch, K every time.

  87. mctruck March 19, 2010 2:08 pm

Forgot to mention that Mark Few(Gonzaga), brought Giacolletti to Gonzaga as a defensive guru, so to speak.

  88. Kazz March 19, 2010 2:10 pm

Not sure what’s going on with Nevada softball but they were preseason selected to finish 2nd in the WAC, with us at 3rd, and Fresno State at 1. Now SJSU has DRASTICALLY improved along with Utah State and looks like might be the three-way battle for the WAC between us, FSU, and SJSU.

Last I checked us, FSU, and SJSU have played top opponents but we all share the same thing. Single victories against ranked opponents. Since the RPIs aren’t posted I’m on the fence to think if the WAC gets more than 1 invite to the NCAAs sans the WAC Champion. Could be, but who knows?

There is a possibility we can beat CAL twice before the weekend is done but if we beat CAL only once either tonight or tomorrow I dunno how much that will help as WAC play starts next week for us against SJSU.

With the potential of this YOUNG team, to me there are only TWO viable paths this season can take:

    1) Win our 3rd WAC tournament and move on to the NCAAs for a 9th time.
    2) Finish 2nd in the WAC tourney and get an invite to the NCAAs.

  89. Kazz March 19, 2010 2:14 pm

    Pomai,

Where you during the Wahine volleyball game last night??? 😯

  90. Ralph March 19, 2010 2:14 pm

Gonzaga ahead of florida state 41-27 with 15 minutes to go. New Mex State down by 13 at the half to Michigan State. Utah State got beat 69-53 by Texas AM

  91. Pomai March 19, 2010 2:20 pm

  93. Old School Dave March 19, 2010 2:32 pm

Re McTruck #85: Agree with you that at this point, Ray Giacolletti the Associate HC at Gonzaga looks like the strongest candidate. He’s been a successful HC before and was Big Sky Coach of the Year at Eastern Washington and took his team to their first ever NCAA appearance in 2004. He also had one very good season at Utah, when he replaced Rick Majerus, but was let go after his third season when the Utah people decided to go in a different direction.

  94. Old Diver March 19, 2010 2:36 pm

    Regarding # 68

    {To expect the UH Department of Athletics to operate in a financially-responsible and legally-appropriate way is something I strongly support.}

I believe the BOR asked JD to run the AD like a business. That really should have been directed to the Chancellor, for it is she who is holding up the student fee. My point is JD is being asked to run the AD like a business, but does not have full control to run it like a business.

  95. Kazz March 19, 2010 2:37 pm

It’s ok Pomai. Since that was your first time in the SSC, you get a “pass”.

Next time, everything you need to be checking out is on the teraflex. 😎

  96. Da Punchbowl Kid March 19, 2010 2:43 pm

    Garret-

You make some good points, but did you know that the blog host thought JB was a good pick?

Just because we are debating the scenarios here doesn’t mean that we don’t have complete faith in JD.

WHO do you like thus far?

  97. Kazz March 19, 2010 2:49 pm

    Old Diver,

I agree. I think when you look at the bigger picture Jim Donovan is proabably the LAST person the BOR should be telling to run the AD like a business.

UH athletics draws in a lot more kala than what ends up as profit for the AD and if the policies and agreements set forth a while ago were in place at ANY business, CH13 would be quite the trend.

From the profits of the sales of UH logo merchandise to the poor way Aloha Stadium concession and parking (sans the “dangling carrot” deal they agreed to UHAD two seasons ago) fees are dealt with respect to UH getting it’s share or should I say NOT getting it’s share, the system was broken for a while. $10 million dollars ago to be exact.

  98. BigIslandkurt March 19, 2010 2:54 pm

I would enjoy a bean simply for the “out of the boxness” of it all. But I’m with Garrett on this one. All this talk about Kobe donating money…..or being privy to a mega shoe deal….or even talk about Jerry Buss donating….man, a lot of this has been pure comedy. I”m a laker fan myself, but some of these posts have been laugh out loud funny.

  101. Da Punchbowl Kid March 19, 2010 3:09 pm

    Point of clarification-

Even if I have joined on the discussions here I personally want to make one thing clear:

Jim Donovan is the man. He’s the guy who had to make the harrowing decision to seek new leadership for the Men’s BB team. He will make the decision as to which leader be named to lead the team at this point.

Neither of those are easy tasks, but I have complete confidence the wil make the right selection regarding the new coach.

    Nuff said.

Good post Garret. I’ve personally been leery of da bean myself. Correct me if I’m wrong; but it seems like Kobe has issues in dealing with people. If that’s the case, he must’ve learned it somewhere…like at home. Besides, all JD has to do is ask Bobby Nash about him since that’s his coach in Japan. Often times, there are good reasons why things (interviews) don’t happen.

  105. Da Punchbowl Kid March 19, 2010 3:13 pm

  110. Rich2176 March 19, 2010 3:25 pm

It’s too bad college athletics have come down to the almighty dollar. But, that’s reality for the administration, while trying to keep graduating student athletes at a maximum.

As far as JB for the next BB coach, this was posted on line a few days ago. Sorry if someone else already posted it:

    mctruck

on paper he looks to be a good one.

what bothers me is that his three years at utah went south in a hurry.
he was realisticly released and offered a buyout although he technically resigned.

also, why hasn’t he been offered another position the past few seasons?

  112. Committed Road Warrior March 19, 2010 3:28 pm

    jm2375:

No buzz regarding Colt, from what I’ve seen, though the common sentiment is that they’ll (the ‘Skins) draft a QB.

People are still in shock that the Hoyas fell to Ohio the way they did. Everyone’s hoping that Maryland won’t lay a dud against Houston later tonight.

  117. Kendall March 19, 2010 3:55 pm

That’s funny ST, the guy that can do everything you said in your post is the guy not being interviewed, Jellybean Bryant.

  118. mctruck March 19, 2010 4:01 pm

    al,

My researching that situation attributes his Utah debacle mainly due to recruiting a host of wet behind the ears, freshmen(class), which he acknowledged was a tactical mistake, instead of maybe bringing in a few jc players to help bolster the team overall.

Other than that, he was a proven winner. He knows how to recuit as well.

  119. Garret March 19, 2010 4:03 pm

    DPK,

I didn’t mean to criticize you or any of the others who were advocating for JB…a lot of people I respect here were supporting him. After days of hearing the same positive points, I thought I’d point out the other side. I bet I could come up with 5 or more points in favor of JB, but most of those points have already been posted here.

I thought that ST was just trying to stir up some discussion with his posts on JB. ST even knew that JB was not one of the finalists, so by discussing him he could not be accused of trying to influence the search committee.

  120. Slugger March 19, 2010 4:10 pm

    Garret,

Thanks for your points on Mr. Bryant. If he did not graduate from college & that is a minimum qualification for the job, he doesn’t make the cut to be considered.

If UH needs to make money from the MBB team, I don’t think they should consider Gib Arnold. I have no experience watching his Dad in action, but those who have posted saying they will NOT buy season tickets or attend MBB games if the son is coaching translates to even more people out there (not on the blog) who feel the same. If people are going to sit & wait to see how Gib does, it means that the losses from ticket sales gets deeper. We have seen how Coach Dana’s hire increased ticket sales, because of the positive expectations & support of the fans. If you start out with a coach that brings some negative background to the game, even though it may not be his doing, you begin in the hole.

  121. Da Punchbowl Kid March 19, 2010 4:15 pm

    Garret-

I got ya. 😉 The last thing I’d wanna do is make JD think that I have no confidnece in him. I’m gonna blame this one on that rabble rouser, Tsai! j/k. 😆

Athe end of the day, who do you like? I ask because I truly appreciate your insights. You can comment now or wait until all the candidates are made known, but I’d be very interested to see what you think.

  122. Da Punchbowl Kid March 19, 2010 4:18 pm

As it was at the time he had to make a decision about the old coach, its the same now regarding a new coach: I surely don’t envy the AD. It’s gotta be tough…

  123. NorthShoreFan March 19, 2010 4:28 pm

So what does the new coach have in the cupboard?
Amis – forward (coming off injury)
Ji – forward but may not be here?
    Lutu – guard (walk on)
    Milovic – forward (redshirt)
    Lay – guard
    Albrechtson – guard (walk on)
    Enos – guard (walk on)
    Johnson – guard (redshirt)
    Williams – guard (suspended?)
    Thompson – guard
    Kutrz – center
Looking at this JD got get it in gear cause the new coach has got to get it going fast!
    LOI …. April 14..
Assume you the coach, you got about 2 weeks to bring in some recuits.
Probably a longer period but you looking at non-committed guys or academic casulties who may need some time to qualify. Given that AD mandate that you get scholar athletes, your options are a bit more narrow.
Good luck to new coach…I give you three years to turn it around.

  124. Garret March 19, 2010 4:30 pm

    DPK,

I don’t know all the candidates and the plans they told the search committee have not been made public. And it seems like they interviewed a whole bunch of candidates and a lot of others recently applied…so, I have no idea who would be the best.

I was part of search committees (for Deans of Engineering) at Texas and at Santa Clara and I know that the search committee has a hard job and they are doing their best. Candidates that do not even get an interview (like JB) normally have something with their application or their background that make them not appropriate for the position. It is best to *not* reveal the reasons, as that could result in a big lawsuit against UH.

At one of the schools we had over 100 applicants and had to screen out a lot of them. I discovered how some of our applicants fudged things on their resumes…for example, we had two people who claimed to have the same job, so I knew that one of them was lying!

  125. NorthShoreFan March 19, 2010 4:42 pm

Garret…what makes this one a bit more difficult is they want someone familiar with the “local landscape”.
Kind of hard when the best candidates are from out of state. I thought that discussion was a bit strange.
Thanks for the insight about recuiting and vetting candidates. The ones that we know of so far, do not impress me but it seems a couple of them are highly thought of by some “pros”.
Me thinks we go with an good associate coach who may show the most potential but won’t cost so much, since we don’t got the big bucks and hope we find a “diamond in the rough” instead of a “quartz crystal”. This program had a few of those “diamonds” that we didn’t recognize and they are leading big programs now.

  126. Curt March 19, 2010 4:45 pm

It’s crunch time. Like DPK said, we’ll have to trust JD with making the right call. It would be great if we had a dream prospect in the mix…but probably not. We should be hearing something soon.

do we need to rush on this hire?
    or
is it more important to get the right guy in place?

    business-wise what is more critical?
getting the guy in place so he can try to salvage a recruit class so we can have a decent team next year?
    or
getting the right guy in place so he can salvage the program in three years?

As KHON TV reported awhile ago, Jellybean has applied for the HC UH BB position. But ST stated on this blog days ago, Jellybean is not being considered for the job. If there are any among you here who are fervent about Jellybean getting the job and know JD well enough to communicate with him, now is the time before it’s too late.I don’t know JD.

    – I think the emails are jdonovan@hawaii.edu – go for it.

  135. 808griz March 19, 2010 6:31 pm

This thing about – it is a business decision and it should be run like a business is BS.

If they win – BUSINESS IS GOOD. Not very complicated!

  136. Διογένης ὁ Σινωπεύς March 19, 2010 6:37 pm

The ability to recruit should be foremost in the selection of a head coach – be it basketball, football, chess or what have you. If you have the studs, then hopefully you have a good team. You have to surround yourself with good and active assistants who can coach and who will coach – under the guidance of the head coach.

If you are a TRUE LOYAL UH supporter, it should not matter whether the coach is Arnold or King Kong. It shouldn’t matter whether he went to Iolani, Punahou, Kam or Timbuktu High – as long as he can recruit good players, coach, get good moral characters and good scholars.

If the team is winning, the crowds will come.

Gib Arnold is the new coach???????

  150. al March 19, 2010 9:43 pm

oh no…i owe a case of greenies!

  151. whitey March 19, 2010 9:44 pm

Like ST said, Dayton and Ferd are responsible for reporting on the new mbb coach, so it is their call.

  152. al March 19, 2010 9:45 pm

but, curt…didn’t that look like the full moon rising.

  153. whitey March 19, 2010 9:45 pm

for Ferd and Dayton, I hope it is true, otherwise going get sum big time ribbing from ST and gang.

  154. al March 19, 2010 9:46 pm

    whitey…no darkside adventures tonight?

  155. ai-eee-soos March 19, 2010 9:46 pm

Gib Arnold – thass what Ferd & Dayton said.

Announcement as early as tomorrow, per Don Robbs.

  156. BigWave96744 March 19, 2010 9:47 pm

I hope Big Gib can lure Barry over to give some speeches to the team and maybe next season he can mention hawaii in his brackets..

    Wow Punahou is everywhere… Money talks…. 🙂
    Welcome Back to Hawaii Gib..

  157. Ralph March 19, 2010 9:49 pm

I hope the business oriented advisory committee can help reduce the UHAD deficit, use their acumen, connections, and marketing skills to help generate revenue. Hey, if you can pick a new coach without seeing all of the applicants and complete all the interviews, then you’ve got good forecasting skills, hopefully that can translate into forecasting more contributions to Koa Anuenue. But then again, Ferd and Dayton can be jumping the gun.

  158. whitey March 19, 2010 9:52 pm

al, the darkside is till dark, but i going stay on the bright side unless sleeze and g’nalo comes over.

  159. Ralph March 19, 2010 9:54 pm

is Gib a Mormon, if so, no practice or games for UH on sundays? Lots of BCS games on ESPN on sundays, maybe the WAC will be fortunate to get a midweek spot on ESPN, but someday UH will get a call if we win, and win, and win, whenever that will be I don’t know.

  160. whitey March 19, 2010 9:55 pm

like i said before, whomever JD selects is ok with me and hope the mbb takes off to the next level. good to see the mbbows using their bench to see who can play and not just use the same o, same o.

  161. whitey March 19, 2010 9:56 pm

coach coolen looks like he has a very good team this year and will be major contenders for the WAC title. congrats to them.

  162. al March 19, 2010 9:57 pm

    looking ahead…

usc has five verbal commits thus far and two more who were offered.

do we look forward to perhaps the gibber swinging one or two of these guys across the ocean?

i would think that the returning players will opt to remain if given the opportunity.

i think guys like zane johnson and verbal commit jordan coleman would want to play here next year. afterall, it would mean a fresh start for all.

my guess is that eran ganot gets to stay since he not only was involved in recruiting but served as basketball operations mgr the previous two years. hopefully, tim shepherd gets to stay as well.

  163. whitey March 19, 2010 10:00 pm

now we need to see who the newest asst fb coach will be. just my feeling that we will see a new asst coach from the mainland. i think this is why there is such a long delay in making that announcement.

  164. whitey March 19, 2010 10:06 pm

    I’m loving March Madness

Got lots of college sports going on and sometimes it seems that we are diluting the spring schedule.

  165. al March 19, 2010 10:15 pm

yup, whitey #163 something fishy about that one.

  166. expat March 19, 2010 10:17 pm

I am puzzled by Garret’s earlier post on JB Bryant… he called Magic Johnson “great.”

Really Garret? Only “great?” I think Magic deserves a better adjective.

Again… left scratching my head in bewilderment.

  167. al March 19, 2010 10:23 pm

    greatest point guard ever…

  168. d1島 March 19, 2010 10:38 pm

Congratulations to all the UH Athletes on the Lower Campus tonite!

    Congratulations to Gib Arnold.

  169. Ralph March 19, 2010 10:42 pm

This article is a great human interest story of Teagan Gerhart, freshman pitcher for Stanford, her remarkable trek in being the person she wants to be and not let her medical issues slow her down.

    Ralph,
Mike Wilton is LDS… Didn’t the mens BBall team play on Sundays?

  171. BigWave96744 March 19, 2010 10:46 pm

    I mean Mens VBall

  172. Ralph March 19, 2010 10:49 pm

not sure if mvb played on sundays

  173. d1島 March 19, 2010 10:53 pm

    Ralph,

The guy is not even in place yet! Why worry about the schedule? 😕

  174. Momo March 19, 2010 10:54 pm

    I’m loving march madness.
Had a great trip to Vegas and enjoyed staying at VDora. Daughter had a conference there so we shared her room for two days and went to cal for the third day before we return…

  175. jm2375 March 19, 2010 10:55 pm

    Howzit Tsai-kos!

Just got home from the vb game. Great game, great crowd. Stretch’s “visual aid” was instrumental in getting a call changed. 🙄 😆 😎

  176. BigWave96744 March 19, 2010 10:58 pm

    Gib Arnold:
    – A Bold Ring
    -A Bold Grin
    – A Bond Girl
    – A Long Bird
    – Bald Groin
    – Big On Lard
    – Boring Lad
    – Gold Brain
    – Grand Boil
    – No Bad Girl
    – No Big Lard

  177. Slugger March 19, 2010 11:02 pm

    Ralph,

That’s a great story about Teagan Gerhart. Thanks.

I wonder if Gib Arnold is being offered the MBB job because of his contacts in HI who can raise funds. Hope he’s a good coach. Good luck, Gib!

  178. Slugger March 19, 2010 11:06 pm

    jm2375,

I saw that at the game. What a hoot! Good going, Stretch!

  179. Kekoa March 19, 2010 11:08 pm

Bigwave ~ Go check on small wave, and den go rest your brain.

  180. Kekoa March 19, 2010 11:09 pm

jmxxxx ~ How come I nevah see U face on top K5, hah?

  181. Ralph March 19, 2010 11:09 pm

D1 read elsewhere that Arnold was the front runner and it was also asked, is he a mormon and if he becomes the coach, what happens to UH schedule. BYU doesn’t play on sundays and any tournament or opponent must agree to no sunday games. Are there March madness games on sundays?

  182. d1島 March 19, 2010 11:15 pm

    Ralph,

Many hills to climb before we come to that Mountain.

But if he can get us to that point, what a great problem to have!

  183. Ralph March 19, 2010 11:16 pm

Kekoa the K5 cameras don’t scan the cheap seats in the upper bowl

  184. d1島 March 19, 2010 11:17 pm

….right now we all sitting at home watching all the Sunday games!

  185. Slugger March 19, 2010 11:18 pm

I’m watching the replay of the MVB game & I can hear you, A-Joe!

    Kekoa,

jmxxx was sitting behind Rob25 & A-Joe in the second row.

  186. d1島 March 19, 2010 11:18 pm

    Ralph,

If they did tonight, they wouldn’t have seen jmxxxx 😉

  187. jm2375 March 19, 2010 11:26 pm

    Geeee, thanks, Ralph.

The girls and I were sitting behind Rob25, A-joe, PP & Stretch in da 2nd row. Amazingly, we didn’t get kicked out of our seats. D1 & Juliet and Chawan & Lefty stopped by a different points in the game.

Kekoa – will we see you there tomorrow night?

Only 3 more men’s vb home games left, folks. If you haven’t yet experienced it, time is running out.

  188. BigWave96744 March 19, 2010 11:26 pm

    Kekoa,
If you saw my brackets, you’ll know my brain is fried…

As I told Chawan_Cut, Say this 5 times real fast..
One Smart Fella, He Felt Smart

  189. d1島 March 19, 2010 11:30 pm

    jmxxxx,

Yep, good fun at the MVB…haven’t been to one in years. The only thing that could make it better was if they’d drop in a football game somewhere between one of the sets….

    heheheh

    Oyasumina-tsai.

  190. r b i March 19, 2010 11:30 pm

    arnold???????? ah ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  191. BigWave96744 March 19, 2010 11:35 pm

    Ralph,
If BYU keeps winning, they will be in the Thurs/Sat Rotation

Now I know why they said BYU will NEVER get into the PAC10 due to being a Religiously Run School

  192. r b i March 19, 2010 11:39 pm

Arnold can recruit for usc but hawaii def story.
zaga better coach if you can win and recruit to spokane
    u gtta be good.

  193. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 19, 2010 11:45 pm

    Gib Arnold.

Da Hui gets their way again. Nothing new in the politics of Hawaii…

    AL,

No beer for me thanks. I don’t drink. Just a handshake at the next tailgate will more than suffice.

Congrats to Punahou on the hire.

    Auwe.

  194. jm2375 March 19, 2010 11:46 pm

watching replay. can hear a-joe loud and clear. (and keeeed too) 😀

  195. Ralph March 19, 2010 11:49 pm

I saw Bulla working on his chewing gum

  196. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 19, 2010 11:50 pm

Lot of smiling faces in the Wahine dugout earlier tonight. They saw CAL’s pitcher tonight and solved her well enough. Was the same gal with 17 Ks against us Thursday night.

  197. Ralph March 19, 2010 11:55 pm

yup I think she had only 8 Ks, mostly by Iwata and Rodriquez. Her change up got these two bent out of shape, her drop isn’t to shabby nor is her fast ball riser.

  198. Ralph March 19, 2010 11:57 pm

Both #1 Washington and #2 Arizona lost at Cal State Fullerton Garman SB tournament. UDUB to DePaul 5-3, and Michigan over Arizona 1-0 in 8 innings.

  199. Slugger March 20, 2010 12:02 am

Spotting Bulla, Aunty Lyn, The Beast, and the Pestolesi ohana.

  200. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 20, 2010 12:04 am

Wahine finish the Chevron Spring Fling Tourney tomorrow as they play Lipscomb at 12 and CAL at 2pm.

  201. Slugger March 20, 2010 12:05 am

    One more….

  202. Slugger March 20, 2010 12:07 am

Good night, gangeez! Don’t mess up the playhouse, or clean it up before you leave.

  203. Kazz (blkberry_storm) March 20, 2010 12:13 am

We have to be careful when playing CAL tomorrow. If we win they may never participate in another tournament we host.

    Ya know… PAC 10/”big ____” conference protocol.

  204. al March 20, 2010 12:19 am

i always thought that kyle smith was the chosen one. perhaps randy bennett will be moving out soon, oregon or somewhere like that and smith the heir apparent to replace him at st. mary’s.

however, gib arnold it is. let’s usher him in with open arms and forget about what his papa did here.

who knows perhaps in two years he will be able to recruit the twin sophomore towers curently enrolled at punahou.

  205. al March 20, 2010 12:23 am

    yo kazz

there must be something i owe you?

  206. LizKauai [iMac] m/ March 20, 2010 12:30 am

Nitey nite and sweet Soft/Volley/BB DREAMS!

  207. Pomai March 20, 2010 2:31 am

If Arnold it is, then true or not it will be perceived as Punahou alum bought him the job.

  208. rock 11 March 20, 2010 6:36 am

is this really an upgrade over nash?? this is why the program will never take that step–kyle smith shouldve been the choice. i mean gib got FIRED from his last job @ USC, and we see whats going on there. he couldnt even hold a job there. we shouldve gave nash one more year if this is the choice!!
