Meeting held, no decision yet

Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw, athletic director Jim Donovan and head coach Greg McMackin met for more than an hour after last night’s awards banquet for the Warrior football team.

All declined to comment after emerging from the meeting held in a conference room at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel.

Thought M.R.C. was needed in the discussions…. 😐

  4. ai-eee-soos December 5, 2011 12:35 am

wow – just waiting for the ….. announcement.

  5. Stephen Tsai December 5, 2011 12:37 am

No announcement. I misinterpreted that there would be one.

    My fault.

  6. LizKauai (iPad) December 5, 2011 12:38 am

“I misinterpreted the situation in reporting there would be an announcement on a decision today. Donovan did not make such a claim.”

    Thanks for the clarification, ST.

  7. LizKauai (iPad) December 5, 2011 12:41 am

ST- no matter… They that wish to will run with the bit in their mouth. Speaking of mouths, i like what the players said about their coaches.

  8. BleedGreen808 December 5, 2011 12:45 am

    ST–

    Did Coach Mack look happy?

I have a feeling Coach Mack will be back.

  9. Stephen Tsai December 5, 2011 1:09 am

    Liz:

The meeting part was accurate. I sat there by my lonesome dove for a long time.

My interpretation that there would be some sort of an announcement today was incorrect. At least that’s what I was told later.

I screwed up on that. I take responsibility on that.

  10. Pride. December 5, 2011 1:13 am

#9 – Well hey, what’s another day. They have to make an announcement soon one way or the other.

  11. al December 5, 2011 1:15 am

perhaps the three will have something in common this week.

  12. Stephen Tsai December 5, 2011 1:18 am

    Pride:

This was just sloppy on my part. I’m off my game lately.

It’s probably from watching a hotel escalator for 90 minutes.

  13. Pride. December 5, 2011 1:19 am

#11 – Keeping the head coach in place? Perhaps. He still hasn’t allowed his recruits to fully blossom.

  14. Pride. December 5, 2011 1:21 am

We know you better. Don’t let them scare you. We know that you always do your job well.

“When it comes right down to it, we don’t want heroes who are truly good. We want them to fail the occasional drug test or start a bar fight from time to time. It makes us feel better about ourselves. Tebow, however, doesn’t make us feel better about ourselves. People like him make us feel a little convicted about the things we say and do. So we find a reason to dislike them….”

  16. Pride. December 5, 2011 1:25 am

Wow Liz. Why you gotta throw Tebow at us.

  17. Pride. December 5, 2011 1:25 am

    Why aren’t you guys sleeping?

  18. Pride. December 5, 2011 1:26 am

    Now I feel convicted.

  19. Stephen Tsai December 5, 2011 1:28 am

Usually at this time, Las Vegas would come and cheer us up.

so, Fresno State and Colo State looking for a coach.

    Tulane hired their’s.

not much ‘new’ news at this time of the morning.

  23. Stephen Tsai December 5, 2011 1:34 am

I feel for Pat Hill. He was Fresno State, down to that green V logo.

  24. ai-eee-soos December 5, 2011 1:37 am

ST: what u think – JJ going to ASU?

I think he would – if the price is right, including his buyout.

Me thinks he would like to get to a BCS school.

  25. Stephen Tsai December 5, 2011 1:39 am

    ai-eee-soos:

    I couldn’t venture a guess.

I thought he would stay at UH, even though there were the wives of assistant coaches telling me otherwise.

  26. al December 5, 2011 1:44 am

i always felt that jj would return to hawaii.

    perhaps it is too soon.

  27. 99club December 5, 2011 1:48 am

    Good morning Tsaikos…

I bet the one-hour meeting was to say, “We’re going to have meetings to decide how to staff a proposal to have meetings on making a decision.”

Spam and eggs for breakfast…then to the salt mines.

IF UH (releases Greg McMackin) following the Fresno Pat Hill & PAC-12 Trends of “looking for something better out there” instead of building something better with The Good That You’ve Got … it would be a Sorry Trend … and just as Likely to “Move ‘Forward’ to more pie-in-the-sky FVAppen/BNash Periods of Darkness from Eras of Genuine Sustainable Success [B.Wagner/R.Wallace/G.McMackin]… For us, much more foolish without the $20M+ to invest in or ensure something better that PAC-12 schools have to put in play …

That May Be Up There with throwing Billions More Bad Dollars after Bad Banks & Financial Institutions to the detriment of “The People” …

AND You Don’t Get More by Investing Less … You Get Less …

  30. BleedGreen808 December 5, 2011 1:58 am

I hope UH decides to keep Coach Mack. Yes, there are some things he can improve on but, imo, any coach who has the respect and admiration from its players is more important than wins or loses. In the end, football is just a game.

Eighteen schools are already up and running, looking for new coaches. Actually seven of them already have their coaches in place. We probably would have started earlier, if we really wanted to make a change. Something tells me that we are very reluctant to make a change at this time.

Kekoa, Rob25…thank you for coming to the Football Awards Banquet and supporting the team tonight. Er, last night. The support among the Tsaikos is awesome. I had the same observation as PolyMom about Aranda and told my table mate about how he hardly sat down, and was in the back of the room the whole time. Considering all the setbacks the team has had, it was a very good banquet and nice to see the young men in the limelight. Kudos to Na Koa’s very own Joyce Lau…you are a wonder woman!!

  34. Bulla December 5, 2011 2:37 am

    Pride,

still awake my brother or just working the grave shift, haha. all is well……coaching challenges for UH, what a breaking-news story, the song remains the same.

option, offer $850,00 with a $400,000 buyout clause, sign the deal, buy him out one week later. we just saved over $700,000.

offer was made out of need, offer was signed out of greed…… just a thought, or we just keep him for another year….average attendance goes to 25k per game, sounds fiscally sound to me…what you think?

  35. Pomai December 5, 2011 2:54 am

They offered $$$$ and he accepted nothing wrong with that. Those who get on mack’s case about his million dollar paycheck need to get off his case. Tell me one person that if offered a million dollars as their salary would turn it down, “Oh no that’s too much”????

I really don’t pay to much attention to the coaching situation because I don’t have any control over it, so why get more white hair about it(what little I have left). I really don’t go to the games to watch the coaches I go to watch the game/players and support our team.

So I am looking forward to next years team/games already.

    GO WARRIORS

  36. Bulla December 5, 2011 3:01 am

    Pomai,

you are RIGHT, we all get on a pedestal to judge, but it was one heck of a deal…..going from $100k to $1.2m…… and anyone who said they wouldn’t take it is a liar….flat out.

but it is a business and a decision has to be made. you and i both don’t factor into that circle of influence, but i do respect and honor your faithful support of UH athletics.

carry on my good friend and merry merry christmas…..

  48. Bulla December 5, 2011 3:44 am

Pride, all is well God is in control, we should have lunch one day, much work to be done for the Kingdom…..

to all my brothers this early morn, i pray for your blessings and i pray for John’s ohana….another wake up call for all of us, nothing is guaranteed, not even the next breath we expect to take. our lives are mere vapor in the map of this universe, but i am so thankful and grateful to have come to call all of you my friends. if i have ever said an unkind word or maligned you in anyway, i am sorry and please forgive me.

we are all in the 2nd half of our game called ‘life’. 1st quarter we were just ‘going for broke’, 2nd quarter we developed an offense and defense. halftime we went in, regrouped and now it’s the 3rd quarter and we’re trying to see if our plan is making any sense….for some it’s the 4th quarter, and hopefully we’re not throwing the ‘hail mary’s’ just yet.

let us all enjoy this Christmas, and not for all the things and the parties and events, but let us all enjoy the breath of life that God has given us for one more day. i love all you guys, you have all been a ray of sunshine in my life, and may God continue to protect and provide for you and your ohana…………amene.

off subject – local golfers Stephanie Kono & Ayaka Kaneko qualified for full status on the LPGA tour for next year. Both finished in the top 20 after the five day event. Good news for local golf. Congrats!!!

  55. Eric December 5, 2011 4:18 am

Dean Wilson tied for 63rd place going into today’s final round of the PGA Q-School. He was tied for 15th place but had a bad round yesterday. Needs to be in top 25 for exempt status. Good luck Dean – we need a local boy on the big tour.

  56. 808realism December 5, 2011 4:28 am

    COACH MACK HAS TO GO!!!!

    Hire:

    – RALPH FREIDGEN

    – JON GRUDEN

    – MIKE BELLOTTI

    – BUD FOSTER

WE NEED A HIRE THAT WILL 1)GENERATE SOME NATIONAL MEDIA BUZZ; 2)CHANGE THE CULTURE OF OUR FOOTBALL PROGRAM

  57. Hank December 5, 2011 5:04 am

Two coaches that I’m going to miss if it comes to that is Tuioti and Aranda. Tuioti because of his ability to relate (and motivate) young men (a plus in recruiting). I also think Dave Aranda has (imho) exhibited evolution as a defensive coordinator. Their both young, with I think great potential.

I for one am hoping that they somehow remain with us.

  58. Hank December 5, 2011 5:04 am

ST…no one can question your dedication. Mahalo.

  59. Kevin December 5, 2011 5:44 am

President Greenwood should just phone it in.

Each day that goes by might as well be watching future revenues flow out the door.

  60. airsumo December 5, 2011 6:02 am

Re: Cocobean’s previous post #259. I agree wholeheartedly with his idea of hiring a HC in waiting idea. Serves as a bridge of continuity and keeps us from messing up this yr’s recruiting. Only difference is that I hope they get R. Anae. Monies for this hire could come from renegotiating Mac’s 1 yr deal and retiring Tomey,Lumpkin, and moving B.Smith.

  61. WarriorNY December 5, 2011 6:05 am

    Hank,

I completely agree. I also want them to hold onto Rolo. His offense led the nation in passing last year. There’s so much potential there.

  62. Buffoman December 5, 2011 6:06 am

#30 It really is not as simple as that. There dollars involved and if nice, respected folks cannot be in a position to generate a fan base (if it can be done without winning all the power to the coach) that puts dollars into the institution, “nice guys finish last” and in most cases out of a job. It’s financial.

The person does not have to be a complete jerk, as I also believe if the person wins but alienates his fan base, that too would be a problem.

  63. whitey December 5, 2011 6:15 am

    good morning tsaikos.

  64. d1shima December 5, 2011 6:19 am

    Great Morning All!

    Wow! Exciting evening.

No worry Stephen, the anticipation of “anything” happening is understandable. Hopefully, you weren’t too far off the mark.

  65. Bulla December 5, 2011 6:22 am

    good morning tsaikos,

thank you ST for staying on top of everything; it’s when you’re on top that it’s easier to slip and fall a little, because you’re ‘on top’, just my 2 sense.

we all agree that it is time for something to change, but we have no power in the actual change, but will sit back and watch the course of events unfold. either way, the transition will be the difficult task, as always.

thank you to the seniors for ‘leaving it on the field’, and thank you to those that are left for your undying commitment to being a Warrior. today is a new day, and thank you Lord for the breath i have……. 🙂

  66. d1shima December 5, 2011 6:23 am

    And welcome back bighilofan2!

  67. d1shima December 5, 2011 6:25 am

Congratulations! You all deserved the best the school could offer.

  68. d1shima December 5, 2011 6:26 am

    Have a terrific day erryboddy!

And especially to Rasu, have a great healing day.

  69. Old Diver December 5, 2011 6:30 am

While as fans we complained at times about the offense or defense it was a poorly constructed blocking scheme on special teams that may have sealed their fate. Tomey may be right that special teams is 21% of the game, but at this point it could be a 100% career changer for the coaches.

  70. bigislandkurt December 5, 2011 6:41 am

If it so happens that we see a new coaching staff, I would not be surprised to see Coach Tuioti retained. As for the continuity of the run and shoot, I could care less at this point.

    Good morning friends. Happy week.

    BIK

    Congrats to our outstanding Warriors!

Love and prayers for las vegas.

Congrats to the award winners and best wishes to the Seniors in their next phase of life.

Best wishes and healing thoughts for Rasu Begasu.

  73. Old School Dave December 5, 2011 7:33 am

Kicking game (all facets), power run blocking (if you can’t gain 1-yard, you aren’t worth a d#$!) and wrapping up on tackles (too much grabbing) – three glaring areas that need fixing in the spring (whoever the coach is).

  74. el burro sabio December 5, 2011 7:33 am

    Kev-1,

Last night I did not forget a kicker, just think that a kicker is not the highest priority. If there are no linemen, kicking is not necessary.

  75. Stretch December 5, 2011 7:33 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

Whatever decisions are made, some kind of change is needed for the future of UH football to be successful.

  76. Old School Dave December 5, 2011 7:36 am

Can someone tell me if I heard right in that UH only has 4 running plays on offense?

  77. Stretch December 5, 2011 7:38 am

Old School Dave – correct. The four runs are…. run to the left, run to the right, run up the middle, then run for your life

  78. Da Punchbowl Kid December 5, 2011 7:46 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Congratz to all of the Warriors for a fine effort this season. Happy for all those honored at the banquet, and for the rest of the players. Most excellent Warriors, all.

    Prayers for Brother John.

  79. Bryson December 5, 2011 7:53 am

Athletic department should start season ticket sales ASAP w/ a early renewal/new sales discount….

  80. Slugger December 5, 2011 7:55 am

    Good morning, gang!

Pomai, #35, I agree. I will support Coach Mack if he is our HC. I’m sure that after a season like this, they’ll look at what can be done to improve. If UH changes it’s HC, I’ll support that person, too. But I am there to support the student-athletes. I really like Mack’s record and goal of graduating players. This is really what a university’s overall goal is. If Mack would reduce his salary, I’d be happier, since I know what it’s like dealing with budgets in a state university. No can do anything about who’s coaching, so just gotta support the team.

    Have a great week, gangeez!

  81. Slugger December 5, 2011 7:57 am

Prayers for Rasu Begasu, too. Love you, brah.

  82. tommui December 5, 2011 8:16 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

If I were a lawyer advising Coach Mac and he was going to be let go, apparently there is no “buy out” clause, I would say that he is entitled to the 1.1million owing him for the 5th year. So any idea of “negotiation” would be wishful thinking unless he was to be a good guy!

If you were entitled to 1.1 mil, would you take a lesser amount?

The BofR wants the Athletic Department to be run like a business. The ADept has a deficit of 10mil. Unfortunately because our season was not the greatest, attendance was dwindled and we may end up in the red.

The 1.1mil is a salary thing – I assume it comes out of the UH budget which means something has got to give like repairs, improvements etc. If the UH gets $X dollars overall, the cost of letting Coach Mac go is $X minus 1.1mil.

So I assume that all those that want him to be dismissed at this time are people that have contributed $$$ to the program (other than buying a ticket or two).

  83. RedZone December 5, 2011 8:22 am

If I was Mack I would take the money. Coaching is his profession.

I wonder if they came to a decision. I can’t see why they would not make an announcement. It makes no sense.

  84. d1shima December 5, 2011 8:23 am

    tommui,

    Respectfully disagree.

The HC and others in the program have steadfastly maintained that they are “Hawai”s Team”, they “play for the State”, they “represent” the people of Hawaii, etc.

Add in that UH is a state-funded institution and I think the scope of involvement in the discussion can legitimately be broadened beyond AKA or NaKoa members.

  85. Ipu Man December 5, 2011 8:29 am

Bulla, your #48 post Christmas Card hit the mark.

You should sell it to Hallmark cards. Thank you for being you.

  87. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 5, 2011 8:32 am

    Tommui,

Yes I along with a dozen or so of our tailgating group contribute $$$ to UHAD. Season tickets, parking pass, seat premiums. And yes, out of that dozen we all want a change at the coaching position.

Spread that $1.1M over a few years to lessen the blow.

The winds of change have come to Manoa.

  88. Old Diver December 5, 2011 8:32 am

    #82

    Tommui

Just a small kine tweak. The debt is $10 million. UH ran a budget surplus last year, and I assume this year there will be a budget deficit. Even at that our athletic budget problems dwarf most other universities.

  89. Shoko December 5, 2011 8:34 am

I would like to throw my name as a potential hire as the Warriors new HC if Mack is not retained. UH can pay me by the hour at minimum wage.

I can’t guarantee any bowl games, but at least they going save money. 😉

    Morning gang!

  90. Ipu Man December 5, 2011 8:34 am

    So ST, you were right…

  97. tommui December 5, 2011 8:50 am

DSHIMA et al – sorry I should have made it clear = many of those that are wanting a change of coaches don’t invest in the various athletic programs.

Lord help us all is Na Koa or AKA members get into the selection of coaches!

That should be in the strictly in the hands of the AD (consulting with the President).

  98. LETS GO BOWS: December 5, 2011 8:51 am

i hope the 5 star recruit from Ohio is better than mike Edwards cause Edwards was over hyped and didn’t do a dam thing this year even tho he played at Tennessee before coming here…shoots our local boys who plays corner would of done a better job then him. and as for the coaching Staff keep everybody and fire mac and Miano cause our Db’s were pathetic except for Richard Torress.

  99. Wes'side Warrior December 5, 2011 8:52 am

    Morning/afternoon, everyone!

Anticipation, one way or the other, has me antsy all day. Now I just heard on HNN that an announcement will be made around 8pm (my time) tonight. Man… let’s get this behind us and move on already!

By the way, do we still get to keep money that is (was) due to us from the departure of Fresno and Nevada? Or do we give that up along with the usual WAC payouts at the end of the year? Just trying to figure out if I can have some cake…

  100. Shoko December 5, 2011 8:52 am

    UHfan808,

I’m not an expert, but I think expectations would be to hire a coach that can WIN consistently.

  101. Dan-O December 5, 2011 8:52 am

Great…..now we gotta wait 6 MORE HOURS????

  102. koakane December 5, 2011 8:53 am

stillness prevalent in the air. much expectations and held breath. what will happened?

waiting like everybody on the UH decision and the fball future.

morning have a good day no matter what and be nice

    kope’s up

  103. BigWave96744 December 5, 2011 8:55 am

    Tom Mui,

Pat Hill loved the Valley and knew Cali’s budget was tanked, so he cut his Salary in half, from 1.2M to 625K.

Chris Ault at Nevada loves Reno and knows their program can’t afford a big time coach. He was already making only $443K when he took a 4.8% paycut after going 13-1 in 2010..

Sure as a lawyer you would advise your guy to take, take, take..

But if one says they love Hawaii, its people, the university, etc I would expect more giving than taking.

  104. Shoko December 5, 2011 8:56 am

    MW,

Pretty sure we gave up any payout from the WAC when we announced our exit from the WAC. Anyway, eat cake and be happy. Just had some Haupia Cheesecake last night that I made. Was ono!

  105. Old School Dave December 5, 2011 8:58 am

BYU’s backup QB transferring to a yet unnamed school.

    http://www.abc4.com/content/news/state/story/Jake-Heaps-transferring-from-BYU/TtChmRWX_kayj7ppcLhowA.cspx?rss=1451

  106. al December 5, 2011 8:59 am

102…wow. so poetic. almost haiku like.

  107. kev-1 December 5, 2011 8:59 am

Here is my thinking . . . I have thought that a coaching change is necessary. However, if the TEAM were to get together and protest his departure or lobby for his return (one way or another) that would tell me something.

I am actually wondering at this point why there have been no public pleas from the players to bring Mack back. Unless I just haven’t heard them. I’m pretty sure he is what is considered a “players coach.”

  108. rich2176 December 5, 2011 9:01 am

    Great Monday Morning to All!!

Rasu – Continue healing my friend.

Thoughts on the 2011 Football Season:

    – Inexperienced O-line. We all knew that and hoped for the best.

    – Lots & lots of injuries to the offense so there was no hope for any type of continuity.

    – Defense played really hard, but could not contain in the second half of games.

Two biggest pet peeves this year:

    – I have never seen so many wasted timeouts by a football team.

    – NO EXCUSE to miss so many PATs and short field goals.

Still, I enjoy watching our Warriors go to war.

As for Mack – If coaching college football was so easy, there would be a lot of undefeated teams. I’m sure there is a stat somewhere for the average winning percentage of a college football coach and I bet it’s less than 50%.

  109. Wes'side Warrior December 5, 2011 9:02 am

    *Tsigh* haupia cheesecake…

Was just wondering if that departure payout was separate from the end of year athletics payout.

  110. 808Bowler December 5, 2011 9:02 am

Should be intresting. Morning r everyone.

  111. Shoko December 5, 2011 9:04 am

    OSD,

I heard rumors the Heaps was going to transfer since he lost his starting position for awhile now. Can’t blame him tho. Would be nice if UH can attract him to the program. He has a good arm, but threw alot of interceptions this year.

  112. HawaiiMongoose December 5, 2011 9:04 am

    UHfan808,

I’d like to see UH recruit Mark Helfrich, the offensive coordinator for Oregon. He’s young, upcoming and one of college football’s best teachers and schemers of the passing game and the spread. It would be a gamble to hire someone with no head coaching experience but it could pay off, especially since he’d bring an offensive system that would play to the strengths of both David Graves and Stump Godfrey.

    http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=3376&SPID=233&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=500&ATCLID=204770343&Q_SEASON=2011

  113. kev-1 December 5, 2011 9:05 am

okay unrelated . . . no offense to Madonna fans, but why does the Super Bowl halftime show always feature WAY PAST THEIR PRIME performers? Recently they had Bruce Springstien (sp?) perform and he tried to pull some pathetic looking slide across the stage that I thought would have ended up in injury.

With all of the young, hot talent out there, why do they always (okay, not always but often) pick the not so new name?

  114. Wes'side Warrior December 5, 2011 9:05 am

Several players (seemed) to have answered a question pertaining to the coaching staff during interviews after the game. Not a single one had any disparaging remarks. In fact, a couple even came out and said they failed to make plays and some were caught out of position at key moments. As one of them said, unless you’re (we’re) on the field with them, going through it all and hearing what the coaches are saying and teaching, we really have no idea what’s going on.

  115. d1shima December 5, 2011 9:07 am

    WW and Dan-O,

More late than that. The meeting is at 3 pm.

  116. Da Punchbowl Kid December 5, 2011 9:08 am

Haupia Cheescake? Where do you live?

  117. Innocent Observer December 5, 2011 9:09 am

This mornings meeting of the team, seals the departure of coach mack; otherwise, he would have been there. mack had his chance but failed miserably. better to look forward and go in another direction. keep linebacker and dl coach, release the rest. the two coordinators are young but they were not able to make game decisions to adjust; they merely continued their game plan, hoping things would get better – that is why we lost three games, which should not have happened.

  118. Da Punchbowl Kid December 5, 2011 9:10 am

    #102 –

    The calm before the storm?

Tsai’s right even when he thinks he’s wrong. 90 minutes of escalator watching will do that to you.

  119. Old School Dave December 5, 2011 9:10 am

Shoko (#111): Heaps has a lot of potential and he’s only sophomore (two years of eligibility remaining, plus a redshirt year too). A good QB coach and OC can help him develop and improve. Internet chatter says that Heaps may transfer a few miles up north to Utah.

  120. Couch potato December 5, 2011 9:11 am

in an unprecedented move, adjd instructs players and assistant coaches to decide fate of hc.

other breaking news, Cher will follow Madonna and be the following year sb halftime diva performer.

  121. Wes'side Warrior December 5, 2011 9:14 am

No one said anything about Coach Mack being released, and yet you’re already reading into what happened in that meeting. Or… were you there?

Me? No more haupia cheesecake over here. Just wishing… Maybe I should learn how to make it!

  122. Pomai December 5, 2011 9:14 am

#94 – d1 – I think JD should have a meeting with the coaches(except for Mack) and players right after their meeting, I do think their input should be taken into consideration, fans not at all. Plus I think they (players and coaches) should come out in public of their decision about the coaching situation.

  123. kev-1 December 5, 2011 9:17 am

    121 . . . I think he is just kidding

    120 . . . funny on both counts.

  125. d1shima December 5, 2011 9:22 am

  126. Old School Dave December 5, 2011 9:23 am

The hiring of Mike Leach at WSU is causing some shock waves and making opposing Pac -12 coaches sit up straight.

    http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/utes/53028702-89/whittingham-pac-coach-monson.html.csp

Maybe UH can get someone who will shake up things in a good way. When players hear, “Coach wants to see you.” They get scared.

  127. kev-1 December 5, 2011 9:23 am

I think JD should have a meeting with me.

  128. Shoko December 5, 2011 9:26 am

    MW,

Easy to make Haupia Cheesecake. Just buy premade Cheesecake and prepare NOH Haupia mix and pour ovah da cheesecake. Put in fridge and BAM! Haupia Cheesecake.

Never said I was a culinary pro in deserts. Thats my wife’s job.

  129. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 5, 2011 9:27 am

    Pomai,

I don’t think asking assistant coaches who are employed by the HC whether or not the HC should be retained. I am pretty sure I know what the answer would be.

  130. koakane December 5, 2011 9:29 am

All-WAC Football Teams Announced and congrats to the warriors selected.

second team WR-Royce Pollard, Sr., OL-Brett Leonard, Sr., DL-Kaniela Tuipulotu, Jr., DL-Vaughn Meatoga, Sr., LB-Corey Paredes, Sr., DB-Richard Torres, Sr.,

  131. PolyMom December 5, 2011 9:29 am

@Kekoa, no worries had a little turkey and salad. But made a big plate of that Ono bread pudding. I don’t know how we would do this, but I felt bad for the boys with no ohana there last night. Got to figure out how to get a parent there for all the boys. Not like the old days when the players had host parents on the island. Heck some of the former players from those days are still so close to their host parents.

Standing next to Robert Kekaula…I was like a little tiny person. He always cracks me up with his great sense of humor. Team meeting this morning for the boys at eight. But now they really got to hit the books.

  132. Wes'side Warrior December 5, 2011 9:32 am

Wait, so I can get Noh haupia mix online? Let me googo da stuff…

  133. kakaako kid December 5, 2011 9:33 am

Thank you coach Mac for taking the reigns as a tsunami was building. JJ ran a terrific double reverse and we were left scrambling. Thanks for stepping in and stablizing those rough seas. A different twist could have you pondering a DC position at ASU…for a similar salary. What happens next happens. If you should be on the sidelines next year, I know we will be successful. If you should be absent, I know we will be successful. We are the aloha state and I have much aloha for you. Thank you for taking care of our sons.

Re #79 – Bryson, I got my tickets the very day of Mack’s hiring press conference. Was at home watching it on TV and thought, “time to put your money where your mouth is.” Forget if it was at a discount, but you have the right idea.

Gonna make d1’s teri chicken this weekend (I think). Unless the inlaws have something planned already. Nah, too bad. They going eat what I make.

Tuipulotu get chance to make all-conference in two different conferences! Thought Art Laurel might be on the list too.

Anyways, gratz!!! That’s lots of leadership graduating!

  145. Pomai December 5, 2011 9:45 am

#125 – d1 – problem is that, that isn’t always the case at UH

#129 – IWWTHM – if they can’t give their honest opinions then maybe they shouldn’t be here, they in fact work for JD also.

    Congratulations to the All-WAC Warriors!

  150. al December 5, 2011 9:48 am

    IWWTHM,

Gotta treat ’em like “hostile witness”

  152. Wes'side Warrior December 5, 2011 9:49 am

    Man… I’m hungry now…

  153. Wes'side Warrior December 5, 2011 9:50 am

talk about getting left out in the dark

  158. Couch potato December 5, 2011 9:54 am

    al, who is they?

Wes’side Warrior, cheaper for your daughter to mail some packages in the smallest USPS priority mail box or envelope.

since schollies are on a year to year basis, gonna be scary if and when a new coach calls you in the office for a one-on-one dialog.

  159. Couch potato December 5, 2011 9:56 am

Wes’side Warrior, i didn’t mean the smallest USPS priority mail envelope, just the box. 😆

  160. d1shima December 5, 2011 9:58 am

…or go plant one coconut tree! 😈

  161. Derek December 5, 2011 10:00 am

Adrian Klemm would be a very interesting candidate. He’s a great recruter and he can get the offensive linemen what we need. The OL was the weakness on the team and the depth sufferred after injuries. If he’s the guy, he’s probably sold on the run and shoot or a version of it, but I think he would want to run the ball too. He just needs to get the defensive coordinator to take care of the defense. Still, I think Klemm is near ready if not now. He has played at the highest level and played with the Patriots. He’s gotten a lot of players from California to SMU, not to mention 3 and 4 star players on the recruiting trail. I’m sure he aspires to be a head coach if given the opportunity. And, if asked, he would consider it.

If not asked, he might apply for it anyway. And I don’t think we need to pay him top dollar. About $600,000 to $650,000 would do.

  162. al December 5, 2011 10:01 am

kk…next week the birdie going be really hungry.

  163. Darren December 5, 2011 10:03 am

#148. It was a bit bothersome to see the chatting and picture taking between those with the red championship tshirts and BYU personnel at the locker room entrance. Realistically though, their faith will lead many to Provo…hard to argue with that. Just glad that we’ve been able to get those that we did from the North Shore. Hope we can keep that pipeline open regardless of what happens…

  164. al December 5, 2011 10:04 am

ww…shhh. no mention the secret hidden camera trick. only used to verify someone who is lying.

  165. al December 5, 2011 10:04 am

cp…they = jd, vh, bor, et al.

  166. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 5, 2011 10:05 am

If we get a new regime in 2012, I would like to see Anae come in as an assistant. I am certain he would keep the north shore pipeline along with the polynesian pipeline wide open for UH.

  167. al December 5, 2011 10:06 am

stretch…it actually was born from a phoncon with the big brother. he wanted to elaborate but talk of the warriors always makes him hungry.

  168. Couch potato December 5, 2011 10:07 am

al, who is et al? alien? 😆

  169. Old School Dave December 5, 2011 10:08 am

I think that with coaches like Inoke Funaki (returned LDS missionary), Paipai Falemalu, Richard Torres (fmr Kahuku players), UH can keep that pipeline open and get their share of players. Religion is an influencing factor, but only to a certain degree (Manti Teo, Kona Schwenke, Haoli Jamora, and other LDS players who have gone elsewhere).

  170. d1shima December 5, 2011 10:09 am

(did I mention that I’m off next Tuesday?)

  171. BigWave96744 December 5, 2011 10:11 am

BTW they are filming Hawaii Five-O by our church, with the crew trucks and tents in our parking lot. Just so happened that Bulla and Lyn were also at church. Hey gotta be prepared to give Wo Fat some Godly counsel 🙂

  172. Derek December 5, 2011 10:12 am

Heaps will want to transfer to a school that throw the ball a lot. Possible destinations: Washington St. with Mike Leach, Arizona St., if June Jones go there, Washington with Sarkisian. Since he’s from the state of Washington state, my bet is that he will sign with one of the state schools. Outside possibilities, Boise St.. Remember, Kellen Moore is from Washington. Hawaii? I don’t think so, especially if he has a young family.

  173. (Jesse) James December 5, 2011 10:17 am

Good morning gang….Hope all is well….

#106 al…True dat….and gramps was lucid when he made that haiku, although he thought that was a valley on the windward side….MWAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA

  174. BigWave96744 December 5, 2011 10:18 am

Old School Dave, from a source from the Kahuku Staff, BYU hasn’t been that active in past years. They know players know the door is always open. This year they are going strong. Maybe using the upcoming home and home series as motivation. Blowing out Hawaii at Aloha really hurt UH

  175. (Jesse) James December 5, 2011 10:18 am

    Did somebody say lunch????

  176. BigWave96744 December 5, 2011 10:20 am

  177. (Jesse) James December 5, 2011 10:20 am

Continued prayers for John aka Las Vegas….

And again, a special shout out and thanks to all the T-gate attendees, especially the early morning and grill crews…you guys are awesome!!!

  178. Old Diver December 5, 2011 10:24 am

Totally unfair. Mike Edwards requires off season shoulder surgery. The guy was playing hurt, not to mention he did not play ball last year.

  179. Old School Dave December 5, 2011 10:25 am

Jake Heaps, although a member of the Mormon Church, apparently didn’t fit in with the returned missionary clique on the team at BYU. Being from Washington State (Seattle area) playing for Mike Leach, who’s also LDS, at WAZZU may look like a good fit.

  180. kev-1 December 5, 2011 10:27 am

I think Mike Edwards has tremendous upside. I agree with you Old Diver.

  182. al December 5, 2011 10:29 am

  183. al December 5, 2011 10:30 am

wouldn’t your head coach be the last speaker of the year at the na koa?

With the exception of the UNLV and BYU games we were very competitive till the end things just didn’t bounce our way…I believe Mack’s work is not done here and feel he should be retained for 2 years and give him a chance to really get his recruits on the field…

  187. 808Bowler December 5, 2011 10:31 am

Ya don’t think heaps coming here. We have too.much qbs as it is. But who knows.

  188. Derek December 5, 2011 10:33 am

This UH football team is hard to figure out. Like night and day. They played excellent against Colorado and Louisiana Tech. The rest of the games were puzzling. Some examples,

Down 21-0 in the 1st quarter to UW, losing at UNLV by 20 when we were 20 pt. favorites, 6 turnovers in the first half against San Jose State. Blow a 21 pt. halftime lead against Utah State, let Fresno State score 17-0 in the first quarter, at home, allow 28 points in the 3rd quarter to BYU, at home. These big laspses in play speaks volumes about how this team really is, very inconsistent, lack of focus, not enough playmakers, and coaching leadership. The players played hard as they could. I don’t fault that. But, we don’t have playmakers like Salas, Pilares, Green, and Mana Silva (interceptor leader). SPG make Moniz look good. That’s recruiting. The coaches are responsible to get the recruits. They did get some good players. I like Vele, Yap, Davis, Van Ackeran, etc., but I don’t see “BIG” time, yet, on anyone. Where it was really telling was the offensive line and the fact that we didn’t have a strong leg for a kicker. That’s recruiting. Now, for next year, I’m really concerned about the defensive line also. We lose Meatoga, Tuipulotu, and Masch. I don’t see anybody on the horizon that will be at least just as good, if not better. If you can’t win the battle up front you don’t have much chance to win the majority of the games.

  189. Bryson December 5, 2011 10:33 am

I do think If Mack is reatained he should take the D play calling reigns back,at times it seemed like Aranda had trouble getting his plays in,I ve seen Mack in action he’s definetly a great defensive minded coach and I think a coach needs to be on the field in order to adress his players and make adjusments

  190. Bulla December 5, 2011 10:35 am

this week too tight, next week maybe after my mom in law gets out of hospital. the beast gets home wednesday and is due for a feeding… 🙂

  191. 808Bowler December 5, 2011 10:40 am

Klemm sound intresting but recruiting in Hawaii is way different then recruiting in texas. Much easier to recruit there then here. Also theres more to being a head coach then recruiting. If a new hc is on the horizon I like the idea of the oc from oregon. We have the tools for a spread offense.

  193. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 5, 2011 10:42 am

    al,

according to an imposing former Hawaii player, you would only want Anae as a coach if you want someone who requires 210% out of his players, no excuses, a disciplinarian, teaches and demands the perfection of fundamentals.

we don’t want someone like that now do we?

  194. al December 5, 2011 10:43 am

bryson…could it be that aranda was often being overridden by mack?

    same with rolo…?

    tweet!

  195. 808Bowler December 5, 2011 10:44 am

Again I seen the safties drop 15-20 yards when it was 3rd and 5. Idk what miano was thinking. they were getting killed with the 5 and in routes. Middle was wide open. Same thing happen aganist fresno st.

  196. madeinhawaii December 5, 2011 10:48 am

Adrien Klemm doesn’t have enough experience coaching. Recruiting and Oline, yes, but not much more. Just because he played at the highest level doesn’t guarantee anything. Von Appen, I believe played at the highest level too.

But really, maybe we need to address what part(s) is/are broken and need to be fixed… and replace the coaches there? Tomey just stepped in for Special teams… Defense we have holes but are better than we have been in the past… Corners have been a little weak, but it seems we have been able to get the best out of our defense more often than not… until they are gassed from being called back onto the field without much rest.

Offense… our O-line has been a sore spot for the longest time, recruiting and performance… Play calling has also been somewhat inconsistent, especially against tougher defenses and in the Red Zone. I like Rolo but maybe he’s not the guy we need right now… I don’t really know.

  197. Couch potato December 5, 2011 10:53 am

with so many overrides, no wonder there were so many out of system time-outs.

  198. Old School Dave December 5, 2011 10:53 am

I like the possibility of Robert Anae coaching here. There seems to be the need for some discipline and perfection. He got his start in coaching as a GA back in the 80s under Dick Tomey.

  199. Old Diver December 5, 2011 10:56 am

While we were on offense and Rolo was calling plays I would see Mack walking the sidelines mouth closed. It appeared to me that Rolo was making the calls without interference. Problems on offense go deeper than play calling. Something about no communication between the coaches? al? you have any insight on this?

  200. Couch potato December 5, 2011 10:58 am

jd and mack going jun ken po, best of seven. mack wins, he stays. losses, aloha oe. fair enough?

  201. primo123 December 5, 2011 10:59 am

play calling was a big question mark this year. who calls time out in a cruical situation, needing a first down, the comes in with the play being….an option run?….I thought UH was a pass first team? I would’ve thought with Mouse being around, Rolo would’ve been more wide open…but I guess not. Lots of time scratched my head with the play calling.

Was Mack involved with the offense as well?

  206. Derek December 5, 2011 11:08 am

Boise St. got shafted and were disrespected. I was shocked at the BSC bowl pairings. The one that got me was Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. They lost twice to Clemson. Period. Their BCS ranking was lower than Boise St. They don’t deserve it. Frankly, I don’t think West Virginia is BCS worthy too, but the system says that the Big East Champion gets to go. Be as it may, this is what I think it should have been:

BCS Championship: LSU vs Oklahoma St. (LSU already beat Alabama. Enough said. I don’t like the same conference member playing for the Natl Championship, unless, the teams did not play each other in the regular season.

Rose Bowl: Oregon vs Wisconsin (no problem)

Fiesta Bowl: Stanford vs Boise State (I would love to see this game. Luck and Moore)

Sugar Bowl: Alabama vs Michigan (interesting SEC vs Big 10)

Orange Bowl: Clemson vs West Virgiania (crummy game of the BCS).

This is why we need an 8 team playoff: If it was this year this would be the pairing:

    December 10 (this Saturday)

    1) #1 LSU vs #8 Kansas State

    2) #2 Alabama vs #7Boise State

    3) #3 Oklahoma State vs #5Oregon*

    4) #4 Stanford* vs #6 Arkansas

*Because Oregon and Stanford are in the same conference they would not be paired.

    December 17 (Saturday) Semifinal

To be re-ranked, highest seeded team plays lower seeded team and so forth. Winners advance to the Natonal Championship. For example,

    First Semifinal: LSU vs Stanford

Second Semifinal: Alabama vs Oklahoma State

Natonal Championship Game – January 7 (Saturday)

    Winners of Semifinals.

Can you imagine the interest and the amount of money for NCAA FBS schools?

UH Football, can take note from UH basketball. It’s good to have a coach and coaches with LDS connections.

    BIK

  216. A.M. December 5, 2011 11:32 am

For those whose who “dream” that we can attract the ‘good’ head coaches not to mention the assistants:

“Arizona paid its assistants $1,506,510 in base salary in 2010, which ranked seventh in the conference. The money available to Rodriguez for assistants likely will increase by about a third.

“Salaries in the coaching world have exploded,” Rodriguez said last week, talking about money for assistant coaches.

“I’m not complaining, because they have been good for head coaches, too,” he added with a chuckle. “But the assistant coaches are what have really taken off. That’s just part of the market.”

  217. WarriorNY December 5, 2011 11:36 am

  218. rich2176 December 5, 2011 11:37 am

I think we are all in agreement that June Jones did wonders for the Warriors. Broke the 18 game losing streak in 1999 (?) and got the team to the Sugar Bowl in 2008 (2007 Season). He was 31-20 during his first 4 years at UH.

Since he’s been at SMU, his record is 23-28. He was 1-11 his first year at SMU, and has not had a losing season after that 8-5, 7-7, 7-5. He’s making around $2m/yr.

Mack is 29-25 since taking over. 7-7, 6-7, 10-4, 6-7. He makes $1.1m/yr. (Maybe a little less with the voluntary salary cutback.) It’s costs SMU twice as much money for a loss than it costs UH.

The point is that overall, both coaches have pretty much the same record for the same tenure at UH. (One more loss per season for Mack, but more games played.) But even throwing out the first year for both coaches, JJ is 22-17, and Mack is 22-18. They’ve WON the exact same amount of games the past three years, and yet a lot of people want Mack gone. Let the man finish his contract and THEN decide if he should stay or not. He’s not the one missing PATs and tackles, nor is he the one over-throwing or dropping a pass. He’s not on the O-line or the secondary. He and his staff can only teach. It’s up to the team to play as one unit and execute.

These are two entirely different coaches with similar results over the past 4 years.

  219. madeinhawaii December 5, 2011 11:42 am

    BIK…

Let’s hope BB starts winning some of the bigger games soon, though.

  222. primo123 December 5, 2011 11:45 am

IF JJ was at Hawaii and had the same record as Mack, 29-25, i wonder if we still would be talking about an extension OR buyout.

For Mack….it wasn’t about how he won or lost….its about how his teams performed as a reflection of his coaching staff. When they lost…..they lost in a BAD way…..then it makes you look at this future recruits to see if things are going to get better? or worse…..

  223. A-House December 5, 2011 11:46 am

    Rich:

Thanks for putting it in its proper perspective – yet the clamouring will never stop!

I say allow him to finish his 5th year with his recruits – who knows, UH may be 7 & 0 at mid-season! Will UH beat USC at home? Why not; stranger things have happened!

Next season will be a functionally different team – one that may surprise many if not all of us.

  224. al December 5, 2011 11:46 am

213…not that he called all the plays but would over ride the dc and oc on many occasions, alter the game plan prematurely, and get conservative when instead we should be taking the opportunity to bury the opponent. (35 secs left in the half for example and many other instances where we eventually lost the game.)

…and unless the little birdie lost

    @98,

Did you watch any game this year? Mike Edwards is very good at Kick Returns. He also had a ton of near interceptions. Granted, they didn’t turn out but some of the passes against him were inches away from being picked off… Give this guy a year and he’ll be first team all MWC.

A secondary consisting of Hardy-Tuilau, Edwards and this kid Turner would be one of the top secondaries in the country… (At least in my opinion)

  227. al December 5, 2011 11:47 am

  229. primo123 December 5, 2011 11:50 am

we might have the best dbs in the league next year, but losing our interior line guys from this year, means, they won’t be passing against us like this year, they’ll be GASHING us up the MIDDLE ALL GAME LONG……omg!

  230. al December 5, 2011 11:52 am

i believe that pride. has the numbers on this…

but, the quality of wins during jj’s period is by far better against higher rpi teams.

the discouraging losses against low tier teams with mack is another factor.

  231. Kevin December 5, 2011 11:52 am

If ANY head coach was at UH and had the SAME exact issues over the last four season down to every little PR “no-no”, of course people concerned for the future of UH athletics would be seeking a change.

ESPECIALLY considering the changing dog-eat-dog climate of college football today.

  232. WarriorNY December 5, 2011 11:54 am

  234. al December 5, 2011 11:57 am

rich2176…true that, however, jj took ove. a program headed for dire straits and built it back up from 0-13 to 12-0 and a bcs bowl game.

the bandwagon was full with folks falling off because there was no room. we were placed on a national pedestal. our qb was 2nd runner up for the heisman. recruits wanted to get here.

men were selling their wives to get to new orleans.

now, in four short years the warrior football program is going from heroes to zeroes.

    coincidence?
