Media daze

LAS VEGAS — The Warriors are the guests of two parties — the Mountain West media preview, which ends today, and the WAC’s version, which opens tonight.

UH media relations director Derek Inouchi has been distributing four-page brochures featuring quarterback Bryant Moniz and linebacker Corey Paredes.

MWC commissioner Craig Thompson told reporters today that expansion has not been mentioned in the AD or presidents’ meetings. That apparently quells the rumors of Utah State jumping to the MWC.

If Utah State joins the MWC, one would think that Idaho would be a natural fit right? I don’t really think this is the end to the rumor. Remember, TCU is bolting too.

    BIK

  9. koakane ip4 July 27, 2011 6:57 am

    shout out morning to bik,

what’s shaking on the orchid isles?

  10. Dennis Halloran July 27, 2011 7:04 am

Colt is still without a date for the dance.

  11. Garret July 27, 2011 7:05 am

I hope that the MWC expansion rumor is not true because I’d hate for UH to have to pay for Utah State to travel to Hawaii. UH would even have to pay the higher travel amount because Utah State is in the Mountain Time Zone.

  12. Garret July 27, 2011 7:11 am

    Dennis Halloran,

The timing really doesn’t work out for Colt–if the lockout had been longer, then the UFL would have started their season and Colt could have shown that he was healthy. If the lockout had been shorter, NFL teams would have more time to evaluate players and maybe Colt could get a workout with a team to show he was healthy.

With the lockout ending so close to the season, NFL teams have to pick up players that have no health issues and can play right away. Colt is rusty and has had to recover from the accident.

Colt is also older and cannot go on an NFL practice squad (unless the rules have changed for years of experience), which is where many of the free agent QBs signed now will be stashed. Plus, NFL salaries go up with each year of service, so Colt is a lot more expensive than a rookie free agent QB.

I hate to be a downer but for Colt’s sake the ending of the lockout could not have been timed worse.

  13. Garret July 27, 2011 7:13 am

The latest (3rd?) rumor about Utah State doesn’t make sense to me because it said that they would be added in 15 days. Why then? The timing doesn’t seem to work for when the WAC is supposed to be given notice, the announcement would be better discussed at the FB Preview, and there doesn’t seem to be anything big on the calendar then that would require the wait.

  14. BG July 27, 2011 7:14 am

    Good morning folks!

Koakane…BIK = orchid isles??? Nevah mind, we all still having kope!

  16. papajoe2 July 27, 2011 7:21 am

Great article on “Davon Bess out of the fog” on You Tube. Explains his downfall with the arrest, and how he came to Hawaii. 2nd highest # of passes caught by a non drafted rookie ever in the NFL. I don’t know how to transfer it to the WB. All Warrior fans would be interested in this.

  17. Dennis Halloran July 27, 2011 7:23 am

I think Colt is still eligible to be a practice squad member, because he hasn’t been under contract for three years

  18. jojo® July 27, 2011 7:32 am

And because I’ve been doing manual labor in the field, I didn’t get a chance to say Happy Birthday to The Warrior Beat! I’m so happy you are finally potty trained!

  19. Buffoman July 27, 2011 7:35 am

Maybe it’ll have to be Canada for Colt if he still wants to sling it around.

  20. papajoe2 July 27, 2011 7:45 am

Garret, isn’t Utah State one of those schools in the WAC that may not make the required 15,000 attendance average to be in D1?

  22. cheepono July 27, 2011 8:08 am

seeing the redskins trade donovan mcnabb to the vikings is frustrating. they should’ve given colt a chance. all that money wasted on mcnabb. ugh.

  23. Pomai July 27, 2011 8:09 am

OK my two cents on Colt. Am sorry I never got to see him play live except for the Sugar Bowl, but I think his playing days are over, so if I was him I would look at two possibilities one come back to Hawaii and run for office to start a political career or hook up with a college an get into coaching.

  25. A-joe July 27, 2011 8:11 am

Colt’s future is all speculation. The easiest and most obvious is to paint a dim negative picture of him.

It takes balls to be positive and face adversity.

    I say, where there’s a will, there’s a way.

All I know is I’m not giving up on Colt. Something good will happen for that braddah.

    Re: Colt

I see his life story being written by a certainthe Blog host and turned into a Blockbuster movie.

The veteran sports writer of Honolulu Advertiser fame, chronicles Colt’s struggle to take his QB skills to NFL prominence.

His navigation past life’s obstacles is the inspirational hook. After all the drama passes, there will be the happy ending part where he takes the SF 49ers to the first of 3 consecutive Super Bowl Championships.

    Morning, everyone!

Looking forward to some great football this year by our Warriors. I like hearing how most of the boyz are diligently working out. Please take care of the academics side too!

Also looking forward to what the “experts” are saying about our Warriors in the media of both conferences.

Hoping our line play will step it up from game one, and our defense will come strong on every down. Looking for our next playmakers on offense, and especially looking to see our new and improved Special Teams play!

    Go, Warriors!!!

Colt’s career may have to be taken up north…It doesn’t look like any pro team is willing to take a risk on him, which is sad to me because I think he could be a great QB if Put into the right offense…

  50. papajoe2 July 27, 2011 10:02 am

I think Colt should look into the Canadian Football League to show what he has. Warren Moon made it that way. So did a lot of others. He just has to get on the field.

  51. seasider July 27, 2011 10:03 am

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/sportsnews/20110727_Rainbow_Wahines_fresh_faces.html

Great article by Ann Miller on the 7 new faces of wahine volleyball.

Not being facetious, but “The four recent arrivals share some 15 nationalities”—should be “the four recent arrivals share some 15 ethnicity”. LOL–all four share the same nationality, AMERICAN.

If you look on the men side of volleyball, the best of the best were all pretty good HS basketball players, just not good enough to take it to the next level as a college hoopster. So, it’s no wonder that coach said Adolpho is the most athletic of the newcomers. Give her time to grow into the sports and she’ll be a force to be reckon with on the volleyball court—the next Victoria Prince.

Hopefully coach doesn’t make the same mistake with Croson as he did with Willoughby. FYI Jessica Sudduth, no pun intended, was a great all-around player, but she didn’t bring the heat like Willoughby–Kim, only a freshmen, already had that all-around, high volleyball IQ like Kanani. Imagine if she had started on the left, they would’ve beaten NEBRASKA at Nebraska and gone on to the final four…and lol, probably would’ve had a chance to be a 4 time AA, instead of a 3 time AA, and possibly garner National FPOY to boot.

If Stauber does have that setter’s touch like Uiato, then a 6-2 offense would be the offense to run, with the number of returning outside hitters (Danielson, Croson, Waber, Hartong, Satele, and Goodman) vying for PT, the following, just for FUN and not written in stone, could be the lineup on opening nite:

OH: 1st Team AA Danielson/Croson-all rotation

OP: Waber-all rotation (next to Danielson/Croson probably the next best all-rotation athlete)

MB: 2nd Team AA Hewitt/Forsythe because of her size and blocking (Hewitt get subbed out after serving, but, Forsythe get subbed immediately when she rotates in the back.

S: Uiato/Stauber (subbed by Hartong, Satele or Goodman when they rotate in the front-row.

FYI: In the 6-2 offense, the setter in the back-row after every play runs to the front row, sets the ball, and then immediately runs in the back-row to play defense.

Goodman, Long, Vorster, Adolpho, Blake, Kawamura should Redshirt because of the dearth of playing time. The extra year will help them get stronger, quicker, and maybe improve their vertical, i.e. Victoria Prince improved her vertical 6” during the off-season. LOL…look what a RS year did for Brittany Hewitt. Plus Danielson/Satele/Forsythe are seniors—for Goodman, especially, maybe give her the incentive to elevate her game to the next level so she can be factor in 2012.

    JMHO

  56. Derek July 27, 2011 10:24 am

Good to see the athletic dept. in the black. Improved attendance at men’s basketball and baseball very encouraging and things are looking up in those programs. Look for Arnold’s Army to do much, much better this year with Shaquille Stokes lighting it up. I hope the baseball team does well too, but losing Kolten Wong is a very big loss at the gate. Breland Almadova gotta take up the slack. A local boy has to be a star on the team to get people to come up to the ballyard. Arakawa was decent, but he’s a pitcher and he doesn’t play everyday. And he ain’t like Tatsuno, that’s for sure.

The student athletics fee helps. At $50 per semester it is a very reasonable fee. In fact, I think every student that pays the fee should get a Hawaii or UH t-shirt. They can choose their choice of color from white, gray, black, or green. This is a good way to show school spirit/personal pride and even one katoosh!!!! I’m sure UH can find a good local t-shirt vendor who can make the shirts at a nominal price based on quantity made. Like any businness trying to balance the budget you have to both cut expenses and also increase revenues. It’s simple math. This is why I get fed up with the circus in Congress. You can’t just cut, cut, cut. Find sources to income too.

  57. kawika49 July 27, 2011 10:24 am

  59. eagle July 27, 2011 10:35 am

    (RE: 60)

IN VB how many games can they play and still redshirt — 1/4th season ?

    The early weeks or game 3 when up 2-0 might be the only real opportunities for on-court under the lights PT;

    Croson appears far ahead of where Kim Willoughby was as a freshman; like you noted, the one year of prep can (did) make a big difference;

i actually agree with your assertion that she should have had all freshman season to get ready for post-season, OTOH freshman mistakes (she hesitated and had a few) could also have ‘cost’ or been the difference to Not have made the Final Four …

DON’T Understand why the scoreboard couldn’t have been started earlier … (they knew disassembly & measurements were required to set up the new rig)

ST – i haven’t noticed or tracked — are the “obvious” spam deleted throughout the day (i DO notice they flourish at night)

FOOTBALL again — GOOD Comments by Offensive Line Coach Gordy Shaw on Bobby’s show this morning (rebroadcast in the next hour or so AM 1500): The OL has Very Little Game Experience but Very Good Athleticism and Skill Levels.

Doing the Math HIS Top Ten on the Depth Chart Really ARE:

    – FIVE FRESHMEN (or Redshirt Freshmen),

    – One Sophomore,

    – FOUR Seniors with 5, 6, 9 and 11 games of OL experience

    (and only One Start among the group?);

However … They have a chance This Year, with a little help from Mighty Mo’s Quick Routes, Quick Releases and a Decent Running Attack, to make it three years running of Decent/Good “Re-Built” O-Lines –

    – it (could be) real close to the time when we give the O-Line, Coaching Staff & yes, even Head Coach, Some Cred for RE-Loading vs. Re-Building — i see it as a Team MANAGEMENT Skill, Good Evaluation, Development and Vision sprinkled in with the Self-Discipline NOT to go for the Home Run when it doesn’t fit (Tate, Masoli, etc.) because some of those ‘wasted’ scholarships become these O & D Linemen…

Derek – while i would appreciate the Tee for the student fee, forcing stuff (products) on the ones who don’t want it just gives them more ammo for how the whole fee is a waste (in their mind)

Just in case MWC thinking of expanding UH should have a stipulation that any New members joing MWC will not be subsidized travel to Hawaii.

We can’t afford to keep paying up travel cost for any additional new members to come later.

PER MISTAH MALUNA HEA, DA JUNE JONES IS DA MAN AND THE ONLY SOLE PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL OF UH FOOTBALL’S SUCCESS!!!

    😆 😆 😆

So Maluna, “auwe” to Coach Mack for upkeeping the school’s academic standards eh?

  71. Okole Maluna July 27, 2011 11:24 am

To move up to elevated and enhanced MWC next year we need to take a chance on kid who is troubled or need additional help to move up to next level. And JJ was always there to help.

Tate still had 3 years to play 2. and I’ve no doubt we would’ve have gone into MWC next year loaded. Maybe even one or two 4/5 star WR would have joined a 5 star QB playing for next two year after Moniz.

Ahhh but we only can dream of another BCS Bowl game for now.

    HAWAII vs UNLV UPDATE

I just confirmed with the UNLV ticket office that this is the only home game for UNLV which is not offering group discounts. There are 3 levels of pricing – $25/$30/$45. $25 will get us into the 216/217/218 sections like we had in 2007. $30 will get us closer to the field, 115/116 like we had in 2009. I’m not even going to try and get 125 tickets on the sideline for $45 since they won’t be anywhere near midfield and not worth the extra money. SO, I’m going for the $30 tix. Once I get them, I’ll post on Monday or Tuesday as to where to send payment. I’ve moved offices, so DO NOT SEND ANY CHECKS TO THE OLD OFFICE. As always, I’ll mail the tix certified/return receipt which will add about $5+ to each order (not ticket). Also, I would appreciate an extra $1-$2 per ticket to offset my travel expenses to Vegas, but it’s not necessary. I’ll work on the seating chart and try to accomodate everyone’s requests.

    Okole Maluna:

    July 27th, 2011 at 11:06 am

    Tate to attend SJS

Our lost their gain in 5 star QB :

With you specifically mentioning “5-Star QB”, the HEAVY implication of your emphasis on the “loss” that Hawaii had on Forcier is quite obvious. To which I replied:

    Kevin:

    July 27th, 2011 at 11:11 am

Hawaii didnt lose Forcier, Forcier lost out on Hawaii cause he couldnt “do work”.

    Then your responded twice with:

    ——-

And they’ve all contiued on to NFL today thanks to June Jones.

You are responding to my post about Forcier not qualifiying for UH academically. Subsequently the following comments, in the manner in which they were written with heavy emphasis on what June Jones did (emphasis on PAST tense) in the past in relation to the Forcier situation on leads one to believe that you are insinuating that the head coach NOW in charge Coach Greg McMackin “failed” to do what was in his power to secure Forcier or perhaps work other “methods” to get Forcier in ala what June Jones did as you DID say we had non-qualifiers under JJ and so forth.

There is an unsettling feeling – not good or bad; just unsettling about the fortunes of the Warrior football team.

Guess part or all will be settled on 9/3/11 when Aloha Stadium is filled and the first whistle blows. Will the fans show up? Will the offense and defense show up?

Only Deserie Furtado knows!!! NO, no, not Kekoa, King of the ceded lands.

I don’t see why the travel subsidies to the various MWC schools are different. It should be no more than the lowest subsidies from any one of the schools. After all, the schools all travel to the that location every other year and don’t get subsidies. I guess we were really desperate.

  86. Wade July 27, 2011 12:44 pm

FYI for all the st Louis hs fans…masoli was signed by the 49ers, as a rb. Maybe harbaugh saw something he liked when they were in the pac10. As a 49ers fan, I don’t see how he could be used.

  87. Garret July 27, 2011 12:44 pm

JJ took chances on some athletes, but those were people with negative things in their past that were not related to Academics. If you look at Bess, Colt, and Pisa, they had no academic issues throughout their career. So, there is no example from JJ’s time at UH that applies to Forcier’s situation.

If you look at JJ’s time at SMU, he’s already lost 3 high-profile recruits that signed NLIs with SMU but did not get into the school. If I remember correctly, UCLA and Oregon State happily took at least one of those academic casualties. So, the only evidence that is available indicates that Mack handled the Forcier situation just like JJ would have, and any criticism of Mack should NOT use JJ as an example.

  88. Garret July 27, 2011 12:46 pm

Interesting article that explains why big budget football programs rather pay $1+ mil to visiting teams to get more home games…since they make more than $6 mil per home game, playing on the road hurts their budget.

Michigan AD David Brandon voiced the obvious, the school has no incentive to schedule a non-conference road game. Barring even-year trips to South Bend, the Wolverines would prefer playing every game at home.

Michigan – like Ohio State, Texas or a big SEC school – loses millions by not playing at home. The school brought in $5-6 million per game in revenue before renovating the stadium.

  89. Garret July 27, 2011 12:49 pm

The San Diego newspaper has an interesting article about the financial problems facing the MWC. Even getting AQ status means NOTHING in terms of equalizing revenues.

The Pac-12 Conference television rights deal will mean about $20 million per member school. By contrast, Mountain West member schools this year each will get about $1.5 million as part of a 10-year, $120 million deal TV contract that started in 2006. When that contract ends, it might not get much better because Mountain West markets only cover about 5 percent of the U.S. population, Thompson said.

In 1999-2000, Thompson said the average athletics budget in the MWC was about $17 million. Now it’s $38 million. Meanwhile, state budget cuts have forced schools to raise tuition, which increases the cost of athletics scholarships. State cuts also have led athletic departments to cut more resources, including SDSU, which had to furlough coaches and cut 25 full-time jobs in the past three years. The football office at SDSU is down to one secretary and one athletic trainer.

“One of the biggest challenges is just keeping the doors open,” Thompson said.

The league is on the verge of earning automatic access to BCS bowl games for 2012 and 2013, just like the six elite leagues. But that may only mean an extra $1 million or so per school, which is dwarfed by the disparity in television revenue between the haves and have-nots.

    http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2011/jul/27/mountain-west-facing-financial-struggles/

  90. A-House July 27, 2011 12:49 pm

#109 – yep and the MWC wanted to “bleed” UH, again, for travel expenses.

I agree that travel subsidy should have been from the West Coast to Hawaii – not from “home” location to Hawaii. And, it’s not like they have to travel to Hawaii every year; no, every other year. To reverse this, UH must be top of the mountain every year!

Some would say, “that’s nickel and dime” mentality. Perhpas, but it’s ethics. At least that’s what I learned from Business Ethics class at UH. OH, how naive you say, but that’s the way I was brought up.

In the end, it’s all “water under the bridge”.

  91. Garret July 27, 2011 12:51 pm

So, AQ status would get an extra $1 mil per MWC school (maybe even less since most years the MWC already sends a team to a BCS bowl). When UH’s Athletic Budget is more than $100 mil less than some other D-IA schools, that $1 mil doesn’t solve things.

The league is on the verge of earning automatic access to BCS bowl games for 2012 and 2013, just like the six elite leagues. But that may only mean an extra $1 million or so per school, which is dwarfed by the disparity in television revenue between the haves and have-nots.

  92. Garret July 27, 2011 12:54 pm

    A-House,

Maybe the MWC did *not* demand the full travel subsidy but instead just accepted UH’s offer?

Remember how UH “negotiated” Mack’s current 5-year contract…their first offer was $1.1 mil per year and Mack’s agent just said yes. UH paid WAY over market price and didn’t have a buyout clause which is standard in college football coach contracts…but you cannot blame Mack since UH willingly gave him more than he might have wanted.

Similarly, what if UH offered up the full subsidy so we cannot blame the MWC for saying yes?

  93. Garret July 27, 2011 12:55 pm

By the way, I expect UH’s tuition to go up in the next year or two due to budget cuts and rising costs. That will increase the cost of every scholarship and making JD’s job that much harder.

  94. d1shima July 27, 2011 12:58 pm

…all the more reason to “buy local” in recruiting.

  95. Garret July 27, 2011 12:58 pm

    papajoe2,

Yes, Utah State has had low attendance…but the NCAA hasn’t enforced that rule. If they did, the WAC/MAC/Sun Belt would have had serious problems.

  96. Garret July 27, 2011 1:00 pm

    madeinhawaii,

UH agreed to one amount for schools in the Pacific Time Zone and another amount for those in the Mountain Time Zone, since that would mean they are traveling a greater distance (more fuel=higher charter cost).

  97. Stretch July 27, 2011 1:02 pm

Another Coach bites the dust…. North Carolina fires Butch Davis, just days before camp starts.

  98. Garret July 27, 2011 1:03 pm

To me, not getting Forcier does not hurt UH’s chances next year. There is no guarantee that he would have stayed eligible during his year off (I’ve read that he his grades even cost him 1 football season in high school), there is no guarantee that he would be better in UH’s system (which needs accuracy more than mobility) than Graves/Shutter/etc., and UH might use that scholarship for another QB that might be even better.

  99. d1shima July 27, 2011 1:06 pm

    #116

I agree that $1 million isn’t much against $20 million, but AQ status could be the spring board that could allow some MWC schools to get much better at recruiting. Better to be the ugliest guy at the party than not to have been invited at all.

  102. Wes'side Warrior July 27, 2011 1:17 pm

Gotta agree with Garret’s #123 view on UH not getting Forcier. We’ve already got Graves, Shutter, and a few others that have been “in system” for a while now, plus a couple of other possible greats coming that were recruited specifically for our style of play.

I’ll take the hard working, take care of business kids, before risking everything on a formerly nationally-hyped, problems-with-academics kid.

    Just my opinion…

Or is it too bad we’re not!

And there is no need to reply Kevin’s Ramblings.

    My lunch is done.

  105. Wes'side Warrior July 27, 2011 1:23 pm

Still, though… our biggest problem will be the weak tv contract the MWC has. Although better than what the future WAC will get, it’s still not gonna get the bills paid off at the end of every season.

We just gotta keep winning and make ourselves as attractive as possible. We also gotta strengthen our fan base to a more national presence. Gotta reach out to everyone who has ties to the islands, whether it be kama’aina on the mainland, military who used to be stationed in the islands, whatever…

  106. Wes'side Warrior July 27, 2011 1:26 pm

  110. madeinhawaii July 27, 2011 1:34 pm

    Garret,

I realize that. Those teams in the Mountain Time Zone do not get subsidies from the teams in the Pacific Time Zone. So it follows that, in all fairness, the subsidy to the Mountain Time Zone should be (Cost to Hawaii – cost to travel to farthest Pacific Time zone location).

  111. PONO July 27, 2011 1:35 pm

The problem that will always be with UH athletics is that local people are cheap for the most part and are not willing to pay for a top notch team. People complain about $5 parking at the stadium. SJSU which is a bottom feeder charges $20 for parking and their ticket prices are not much cheaper for a far worse product on the field. Gotta pay to play with the big boys.

  121. Garret July 27, 2011 1:58 pm

I know that the AQ money would not be *nothing*…but it definitely would not solve all of UH’s problems. Other issues need to be addressed to help UH upgrade facilities and salaries to take the Athletic Department to the next level.

To put things in perspective, UH’s cut of the increased money if the MWC becomes an AQ conference won’t even pay for the travel subsidies UH will be paying to the MWC.

  122. Garret July 27, 2011 2:03 pm

Interesting to read about what the MWC’s Commissioner said to the press. These points are highly relevant to UH:

Hawaii only gets a partial share of TV revenue and each team getting around 1.4 to 1.5 million.

    Hawaii’s TV PPV not resolved

If UH is expected to get a partial share of the MWC’s TV revenue…that means that their TV partners have rejected UH keeping its PPV deal. If they were going to let UH keep the PPV deal, they wouldn’t say that UH was getting a partial share (say, $1 mil/year) of the PPV revenue.

The statement that UH’s PPV deal is not resolved may mean that the MWC hasn’t given up on having UH keep the deal. Remember, they have to make a “reasonable effort” to help UH keep their PPV money.

Late comment, but I would like to see the MWC invite Utah State. Their basketball program is solid and I like what Gary Anderson is doing with the football program. Idaho would need to build a larger stadium or expand the Kibbie Dome to be considered for an invite to the MWC.

then we bring da house and wip’um!!!!

  131. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 27, 2011 2:45 pm

10 is a good number for football in the MWC.

Invite Utah St. for all non-FB sports. That should be MWC’s offer. They can get their “foot in the door” and if they can prove that their FB program is winning its OOC games, dominant in the WAC etc. then I am sure at a later date MWC can offer their FB team. This would also balance out Hawaii’s FB-only membership.

There is no *need* to rush and add the entire program right now.

  132. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 27, 2011 2:57 pm

    Some comments from MWC’s Thompson…

“Not yet,” Thompson said. “I think we’re in the mode of ‘sell the boat, go to a smaller college (with) less tuition, take a second job.’ I’m talking real life, whatever it’s going to take to maintain what we have. We have not had those conversations (about the elite conferences breaking away). Knock wood, we won’t have to have them real soon. We may have to have them sooner than we would hope.”

-Thompson said the Mountain West may add the Hawaii Bowl to the conference bowl lineup next year, when league membership increases to 10.

“Colorado had gone (to the Pac-10) on Thursday (June 10, 2011), and we added Boise State on Friday morning (June 11).,” Thompson said. “Are Kansas State and Iowa State going to need a spot? That was very much alive that weekend.”

Looks like the Pac-12 TV Network and the Longhorn Network insures that Texas won’t join the Pac-12.

With the Pac-12 announcing the startup of a conference television network in August 2012 — a venture that will come one year after the debut of the Longhorn Network Pac-12 — Commissioner Larry Scott told the American-Statesman on Wednesday that Texas probably would never join the Pac-12.

“I think you could certainly imply that, with the news that we’re going to announce” Wednesday night , Scott said in a phone interview from New York City. “The Longhorn Network would be certainly a huge impediment.”

    http://www.statesman.com/sports/collegefootball/pac-12-inks-deal-to-start-a-tv-1662754.html

  140. Garret July 27, 2011 4:23 pm

The Pac-12 Network will show high school games if the Longhorn Network is allowed to. That would *kill* the recruiting competition in California and the rest of the Pac-12 states. That would be very, very bad for UH.

Having the Pac-12 Network show all of their other sports nationwide will also make it that much harder to recruit against them in sports like softball.

If the Longhorn Network receives permission to televise high school football games, Scott said the new Pac-12 Network would do likewise.

“We have an interest,” Scott said. “If the Longhorn Network is allowed to do it, we’ll do it from the get-go.”

  141. seasider July 27, 2011 5:12 pm

For volleyball and probably the other athletic programs (except for football), the term “redshirt” is used to describe a student-athlete who does not participate in competition in a sport for an entire academic year. If you do not compete in a sport the entire academic year, you have not used a season of competition. For example, if you are a qualifier, and you attend a four-year college your freshman year, and you practice but do not compete against outside competition, you would still have the next four years to play four seasons of competition.

  142. Not an Expert July 27, 2011 5:16 pm

Subsidy for the MW schools coming to Hawaii and play. Is UH paying too much? If so bad negotiating. UH bargaining should of been paying some of the cost of coming to Hawaii based on the highest cost of a MW school playing at another MW school.

Example: A school travels to B school and it cost them $75,000 to do so as their highest expense for traveling. A school coming to Hawaii and it cost $150,000, Hawaii should pay at the most $75,000.

  153. Stephen Tsai July 27, 2011 7:02 pm

Colt is just going to have to play somewhere. CFL? AFL? It doesn’t matter which league. With his injury history, he just needs to play.

He wasn’t going to get picked up this summer because most of the guys they’re bringing in are undrafted free agents. If there had been minicamps and OTAs, maybe, but not for this short of a period. Especially since he would command higher money (per CBA agreement) for essentially a developmental player.

If he plays somewhere and does well, I’m sure he can have an NFL comeback.

  160. Stephen Tsai July 27, 2011 7:27 pm

At 4 a.m., it should be confirmed that Bryant Moniz is the WAC’s preseason Offensive Player of the Year.

Or, as a WAC guy said: Who else?

  161. gigi-hawaii July 27, 2011 7:28 pm

ST, do you think Colt would be content with a career in the CFL and settle in Canada?

  162. Stephen Tsai July 27, 2011 7:29 pm

Warriors should be out there at 5 p.m. tomorrow.

  163. Stephen Tsai July 27, 2011 7:31 pm

    Gigi:

I think everybody wants to play in the NFL.

But he would enjoy playing in Canada.

If you love the game, and you’re a competitor, you just want to play.

  164. gigi-hawaii July 27, 2011 7:32 pm

Also, I think Colt will go where he is loved — like Chad Owens.

  165. Stephen Tsai July 27, 2011 7:34 pm

Which brings up another point: Do you guys like football for the game itself or for the event?

I bring this up because there are folks like sjmacro, myki and Slugger who seem to enjoy practices and just watching football.

Now I like the Jets, but I couldn’t watch a Jets practice without being bored out of my mind.

  166. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 27, 2011 7:34 pm

Well guess there isn’t any benefit to Utah State. LOL

  167. d1shima July 27, 2011 7:35 pm

Watching an NFL game live gets me bored out of my mind.

  168. iwonderwhytheyhateme July 27, 2011 7:36 pm

    #166,

I enjoy watching real games. I have been to practices every year except this year.

It’s not that fun…I would imagine it would be more fun to be able to stand nearer to the coaches and what not. But in the bleachers or outside the fence not so much.

Golf, since I am a golfer I can stand to watch it on TV. Some can’t stand it.

And off course everything is better live. Live football, baseball, golf, shellfish.

  169. gigi-hawaii July 27, 2011 7:36 pm

ST, I did not enjoy Spring Scrimmage at Aloha Stadium in 2007 when Colt was playing. Boring.

But I always look forward to the actual games.

  170. Curt July 27, 2011 7:36 pm

Attendees to the Tsaikos Dinner-Karaoke-Dance Call at the Hale Koa total 6 at this time plus several others likely to participate.

  171. Stephen Tsai July 27, 2011 7:37 pm

When I was a kid, I loved baseball so much, I could watch any game (and NBC used to show some really bad matchups).

Now that I’m an old fut, I just can’t watch baseball all the way through (even when the Mets are playing). During road trips, Ferd, who loves baseball, will get us to go to games. I usually end up wandering the stadium.

  172. Stephen Tsai July 27, 2011 7:39 pm

    d1:

You’re right. NFL games are boring live.

I think it’s because when you’re at home, they have four replays for every play.

In the stadium, you’re waiting the time equivalent of four replays for the next snap.

  173. gigi-hawaii July 27, 2011 7:39 pm

What I like about PPV is that the bathroom and kitchen are close by. No need worry about the stairs.

  174. gigi-hawaii July 27, 2011 7:43 pm

Does anyone here watch the Pro Bowl? I rarely watch it.

  175. d1shima July 27, 2011 7:55 pm

  179. OldDiver July 27, 2011 8:24 pm

Best time at NFL games was the time I had season tix 10 rows up on the 20 yard line for Raider games here in L.A. Plenty of fights and the Raiderettes right in front of us.

Live golf is actually quite interesting at the pro level. Watching how these guys shape and play shots is truly amazing. I remember following Tiger several years ago at Pebble Beach. Just awesome how he can make birdie by driving the ball into the wrong fairway, hitting a 9 iron from 160 yards over 100 ft. pine trees and spinning the ball back to 4 feet from the jar.

The live game is an event in itself.

Go with friends and any live sporting event is the EVENT.

No amount of bose surround sound can beat a live stadium or arena. Sorry there is no volume control!!!!!!

The emotion is like a drug. The angst and frustration of losses and the pure elation of victory from the people around you cannot be duplicated with 3-D glasses.

I say people go to watch live games for the sport, that’s a given, but really, it’s the spirit of the event is what brings people.

#228 the states rights advocates want the Feds to back off, let the states implement their own immigration laws and right to vote laws. A few states are asking for documentation to register to vote or if registered, documents to prove citizenship to vote. Seems simple, except the older Afro Americans would have a difficult time in producing documentation, same with legal Hispanics.

Enforcement of immigration laws are Federal jurisdiction, states like Georgia and Arizona want to enforce their own state immigration laws without interference from the Feds, and the courts are siding with Feds in terms of jurisdiction.

…for the night and early morning crowd… a repost of Rich2176’s ticket update today:

    Rich2176:

    July 27th, 2011 at 11:31 am

Rich2176 goes to Vegas to purchase the tix in 5 days. Please check that your ticket count request is still current at:

So there have been posts on here that stated if the B12 imploded that Boise State would be gone in a heartbeat leaving the MWC out in the cold and in bad shape.

Well…maybe…or maybe not…Memphis might be the most attractive option.

FedEx CEO has promised up to $10M/year in marketing money to the BCS conference that takes Memphis.

So if aTm,OU,Mizzou,OSU leave who do you think would be the 4 to replace them?

My personal feeling are these schools in this order. BYU, TCU, Memphis, Houston=Boise=Tulsa.

Boise is still a possibility but throwing in Memphis sure helps in preventing the doomsday scenario of the MWC that I never believed in to begin with.

    Here’s why. http://www.cbssports.com/general/story/13515726/fedex-ceo-could-provide-millions-if-bcsaffiliated-league-takes-memphis

Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, said temporary factors held back the market in May, as implied from prior data on contract signings. “Spiking gasoline prices along with widespread severe weather hurt house shopping in April, leading to soft figures for actual closings in May,” he said. “Current housing market activity indicates a very slow pace of broader economic activity, but recent reversals in oil prices are likely to mitigate the impact going forward. The pace of sales activity in the second half of the year is expected to be stronger than the first half, and will be much stronger than the second half of last year.”

  397. Tari Bohaty August 12, 2011 2:30 pm

Buyers are at a great advantage right now in this market. We have not seen prices and interest rates this low in decades. As things pick up, supply and demand will shift the curve the other way, so now is the best time to buy.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

My constant worry about offending God is an offshoot of the anxiety and demoralization of being unable to finish college. There I kept busy and felt productive. So focusing on how God is my mighty fortress and that Christ is more than enough for me to please Him because I am washed clean in His blood is helping me bit by bit to focus more on Christ than the anxious feelings. Because Ive been physically idle for so long I get bolts of adrenaline that can lead to panic as I move, which before this study Ive interpreted as a sure sign that I was doing something wrong or the feeling wouldnt be there. But now my eyes are focusing on Christ. Its an ongoing battle but I know Who my victor is!

Have you ever thought about including a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is important and everything. Nevertheless think about if you added some great visuals or video clips to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics and clips, this blog could undeniably be one of the most beneficial in its field. Good blog!

  530. Jasmine Schmelter August 24, 2011 7:18 pm

No i do not think so. Being a teacher takes a great deal of persistence which a great deal of musicians do not have unfortunately. My original main was going to be music education but I dropped out of that truly fast. It’s extremely hard. I’m an honors orchestra violinist, 1st soprano, and I was in marching band. I’m talented when it arrives to songs but I do not very have what it requires to teach other people how you can play. A great songs teacher must have persistence, as I’ve pointed out before, also they need to understand tons of music theory which a great deal of musicians don’t take into account. A good songs instructor needs to understand that not everybody has the possible to become a great musician and most individuals who play an instrument/sing wont be that great, a good songs teacher will keep them fascinated in songs even following the college student realizes it will not get them very far.

Most of the software used in the creation of our website on a daily basis is open source. Our older applications were developed 100% in house, only recently have we added a framework like WordPress into the mix. And, about half of our WordPress functionality was created in house. (plugins and theme development) Many of these individual programs are available for download at WordPress.org/extend or github.com.

It seems to me that you support the existence of OM more than you actually support the morality itself; insofar as, if OM does not exist, you see no reason to enforce any morality. Which, in turn, you cite as a reason why my subjective morality is just an opinion, nothing more. Which leads me to believe that you dont actually see a value to life at all you just trust that there is one because someone (a man who wrote a book claiming to speak for God) told you.
