#18 HMongoose, Who is UVU? MWC meeting next week. Sounds like the MWC expanding might be like how Hawaii was left out after the split. Will they split again? I forget how the old WAC scheduling was before the split. Did they have an East/West conference? I think that it would benefit Hawaii if the MWC does that as Hawaii would not have to travel too far or the Texas teams (that the MWC are thinking of inviting), and others also don’t have to travel to Hawaii. With Hawaii being in the MWC only for football, unless they keep winning, they may be left out if they split again although the MWC conference is saving money without the other Hawaii teams in the league.

Had no idea that Kapolei senior offensive lineman Samson Kaleikini was a relative of Jerry Scanlan. Jerry Scanlan was a UH tight end who played guard for the Redskins in 1980 to 82. He probably would have started opposite of hall of famer Russ Grimm had he not permanently hurt his neck. If Scanlan hadn’t gotten hurt, who knows if Mark May would have had any kind of an NFL career. Hahaha.

#30 papajoe, I don’t think the MWC has any intention to split again. The idea is to add two more schools to get to 12, which would allow for east and west divisions. Presumably Hawaii would be in the MWC West with Fresno State, San Diego State, Nevada, UNLV, and Boise State. Each football season we would play all five of those schools, plus three of the six schools in the east division (eight conference games total). The next season we would play all five of those schools, plus the other three schools in the east division. The great thing about this arrangement (if it happens) is that UH would only have one or at most two road games a year at cold high-altitude places like Laramie, Fort Collins, Colorado Springs and Logan.

#34 Kazz, Utah Valley University was Utah Valley State until 2008 when it was reclassified. It’s a big school in Orem (right next to Provo) with almost 33,000 students. It started out as a trade school and didn’t even grant four-year degrees until 1993, but now it offers master’s degrees in education, business and nursing. UVU has no football team but it plays at the Division 1 level in all other sports, and has a nice 8,500-seat basketball arena and 2,500-seat baseball stadium on campus. It currently competes in the Great West Conference with schools like Chicago State, Houston Baptist and New Jersey Institute of Technology, but would much prefer to be in the WAC and play more western schools.

Flip Cam’s are pretty cool. I like them. But its zoom ability could be better. I was playing football with some friends while my wife filmed us playing. We were playing some 40 yards away and it was a little hard to get up that close. Anything in side of 20 yards is pretty bomb. But I do like the cam.

i believe any conference championship game is an extra game for the participants.

so yah, it is possible for a team to gain benefit from the 13th hawaii game exemption and the additional championship game. therefore, a hawaii team or a hawaii home opponent who played in their conf champ game could have a 15th game, bowl game.

that would help the budget.

usu brings the utah market to some degree to the mwc.

utep brings some texas viewers.

more importantly they bring a safety net to the mwc. in case there is another raid.

poor wac. they could disappear in a blink of an eye.

Bellevue WA has a bit of diversity to it. Some areas are definitely very high end, but I believe the school district runs as far east as Crossroads mall which gets a little more blue collar.

#98: Lived in Bellevue, WA for about 3 years back in the early 2000s. Nice and safe place to raise a family, though expensive. Bellevue HS is one of 4 high schools in the Bellevue School District that made the Top-100 Public Schools in the Nation list. Four in one school district. I heard that they even ask non performing students to transfer to less demanding high schools. Kind of like a private school in many ways.

By the way, does anyone know if I need to call anyone to register for this surf meet, or do I just show up on Thursday morning with my board and I.D.? Is there a fee to enter? Oh, that might be a problem. I’m a little nervous. I’ve heard that the waves are slightly bigger than what I’m used to in Waikiki.

*Both* of the Maui recruits are worthy of scholarships. The kicker might have a hard time getting a scholarship since UH already has a kicker under scholarship, but he is worthy of getting a scholarship somewhere.

Only problem is we can’t offer the whole island. In a down year of talent in Hawaii, I am kind of glad Hawaii is hitting the mainland hard and not settling on guys we wouldn’t go for just because they are locals.

Behind Tigi, Mariota, Parker, Robins, Mamea, Sua Passi, Asiata, and Tuumalo, the talent is down.

Have some borderline guys like Hassan, Dixon, and Vea but I’m glad we are hitting LA hard. Wish we were pursuing Florida and Texas more though. I know the coaches can come up with some other fundraiser dinners to get out there. Or seek helps from guys they know who live out there.

Haven’t seen Kaleikini play but I talked to a current Kapolei player for UH early in the year and he told me they had no D1 caliber guys on the team. Coming from a guy who probably has friends on the team would make me think he would over hype some of the guys so I really believe that statement when he said no D1 guys.

here’s a guy who i thought was worthy of praise. but, i am not sure if he even played his senior year.

i thought vea of kealakehe was as good as any. also, justin vele.

perhaps the toughest lineman is mike moala of kaimuki hs. don’t know what the dealio is on him. then, someone told me this coen kid at pearl city has the stuff, too.

#115, and because of how the weekends fall in the fall most of the time, we will face that kind of count most years. Which makes the idea of one game on the mainland that is a “home” game every year still attractive for an OOC game, even though we will be in the MWC. My opinion, anyway.

I think that’s the beauty of our walk on program. everyone gets a fair shot and if you make the team, you also have a fair shot at starting.

In the long run, if you go out offering 5-6-5-9 guys scholarships hoping for the next Owens, I think you will fail A LOT more than succeed.

I think the best thing for guys like this is our Walk on program. Every now and then though, you find a guy who can run a 10.6 100m or a camp timed 4.4 and under and it is worth the risk. Ex. Allen Sampson.

Al, I just checked out Peni Vea’s senior tape for the first time. Usually we disagree on a lot of athletes but this time I will have to agree with you. He looks like a legitimate 6-1 and has a frame to really put on some more muscle.

I really like his instincts in coverage and a big time tackler. Like the close in speed as well and flys to the ball. Like always, hard to compare level of competition but he looks like the real deal.

On the other hand, Ijumaa video didn’t impress me as much. Kind of surprised we aren’t recruiting Vea considering he is sort of in our back yard and his highlight tape impressed me more than Marcus Umu of last years class.

There *are* a lot of TV sets in the Bay Area, but how many of them would actually turn to a SJSU game? If SJSU was a big draw, wouldn’t ESPN have picked more SJSU games?

Why would the Mountain West consider the Spartans, who went 1-11 this season and have been to one bowl game in the past 20 years?

I used to be a big believer in the four year recruit philosophy, but I may have to change my point of view. That four year policy may work well at the bigger BCS schools, but we may have to tailor our recruiting policy to meet our unique needs. JC transfers and four year transfers, may have to continue being a large or good part of our recruiting classes on a yearly basis. I was in favor of reducing the JC route to eventually something below 5%. But the numbers show us otherwise.

maybe the coaches liked the stars the transfers came in with, I would think it would take a player time to master the offense or defense, it seems to me that most of the JC guys became starters their senior eligibility year and sat and played part time their junior year.

Having one year players as starters than starting all over again seems like a bigger deal to perpetuate consistency on the playing field.

I would love for UH coaches to recruit on Maui, but seems like kids in the outside islands don’t matter to UH coaches. Yes, I coach at a local high school here on Maui. I have seen coaches from Utah, Utah St. Orgeon St.

Washington, Washington St. New Mexico….Even Coach Cabral came out to Maui to take a look at kids.

To this day never seen a UH coach come around to look or inquire about kids. I know Washington is all over

the kid from Baldwin Pasoni Tasini. Utah, BYU and Utah St. also in play for the kid. So far nothing fron UH.

Mariota? Maui fb players? I hope by Feb 2 we have our complement of recruits!

I believe that our coaches are professionals and know what they are doing. If they said that they have been to every school, then I’m sure that they have been to every school. They know all of the prospects and I’m sure have already offered every local prospect that they believe is good enough to contribute to the Hawaii program. We need to be positive and be supportive of the coaches and the program. The record speaks for itself. The team is 10 and 4 and was expected to be much worse. That proves that the coaches are the experts and not us fans. Be positive, think good thoughts. Believe.

Next season’s conference champions: Hawaii. A year after Boise State, Nevada and Hawaii tied for the league title, the WAC should be just as tightly contested. Just don’t expect three teams to challenge for a spot in the national rankings. Hawaii is our pick because of the return of Moniz as well as that of leading tackler Corey Paredes. Nevada loses Kaepernick and Taua, but the Wolf Pack have high hopes for their young backfield. Fresno State should contend even though the Bulldogs lose Colburn, four offensive linemen and DE Chris Carter. The sleeper could be Louisiana Tech if the Bulldogs can find a quarterback to run Sonny Dykes’ offense.

Was reading the ESPN blog, ala Andrea Adelson, few days ago and she had Hawaii ranked #8 in top non-aq schools next season. Basically she was saying Hawaii should take the WAC championship. 🙂

i wonder what Loeffler, Shigemasu, Dew and Miur’s reaches are?
