Meal plan

The Warriors might have what seems like 99 problems, but a lack of food won’t be one of them.

The Warriors will open their proverbial dining tables — and wallets — at least three times daily this year.

Financial concerns were raised nationally when the NCAA changed legislation to allow schools to provide unlimited meals to student-athletes, including walk-ons. In the past at UH, the one training table each day was open only to scholarship football players.

It is not known how UH will pay for the meals, whose tab could run more than $300,000. But the football coaches have promised the players will be fed.

    Foist!

  2. bowwar July 26, 2014 8:48 am

Feeding the athletes is the least, the UH should do…We gotta get past the negativity & look for ways of how changing things at Manoa.

Have to eat healthy foods to thrive!

  4. Ipu Man July 26, 2014 8:53 am

The guv should step up to the plate and dish out free food, or at least
    hand out food stamp cards.

  5. Old School Dave July 26, 2014 9:11 am

I hope the emphasis is on quality, nutritional, performance enhancing meals, as opposed to simply feeding players a bento from Zippy’s in order to fill their stomachs.

Fresno State also has problems with their training table (long article):

    Food is gud!

  7. C-Pop July 26, 2014 9:19 am

Great to hear walk-on players will be included – nutrition & help towards rent/other living expenses they/parents have to pay via loans/work etc.

    Good morning everyone!

Having 3 free meals a day in college is great news. When your tummy’s full, life is good.

In the days I used to walk to UH uphill both ways, I survived on a Grace’s lunch wagon plate and something else in the evening. 🙂

  13. 3-Prong July 26, 2014 10:24 am

I wad encouraged when Gov Abacrombie promised to give the football team everything they needed when running for office. He has been silent of late, at the time of the recent announcement that they will be cutting 2 million from the athletic budget. Fool me once…..

  14. Shadow July 26, 2014 10:32 am

What will D. Ige commit to? Or all these guys the same?

  15. Da Punchbowl Kid July 26, 2014 10:39 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 😉

Great news! “An army marches on its stomach”.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  16. A-House July 26, 2014 10:49 am

If the “upper campus”, legislature, and people of Hawaii will not support UH athletics, then do away with all sports!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. 3-Prong July 26, 2014 10:53 am

Shadow: Good question on Ige. I have comcerns with Duke too due to hos actions while Lt Gov in trying to stop drinking at the pregame tailgate. Where do Mufi and Ige stand? Anyone know?

  18. 3-Prong July 26, 2014 10:56 am

A-House: Another good point, maybe its an upper campus issue. They could continue to fund athletics if they really wanted to.

  19. RainbowCliff July 26, 2014 11:04 am

Good afternoon Tsaiko Nation, when I was playing at UH from 1976-81 food was NO problem. I ate every where from the dining room table at UH dorms, to Rodney Toyama (RIP) Theos restaurant downtown to the many picnics being invited by fans, state officials and boosters. Even had lunch with the University President Dr. Fujio Matsuda who saw me walking to class and invited me into his BIG office for a plate lunch from the white luncheon wagon off University Avenue, near the College Of Education.

Received a scholarship check living off campus and when check was nearly all gone “food stamps” were available as food mart was my home shopping and gave me my first experience loading a cart of food with fans who saw me in the store coming over for autographs while their parent’s offered me their extra saving coupons making my purchase on my strict budget less expensive. There was never a day I starved in Hawaii as after every game when I woke up the next morning in my apartment building at 922 Kapahulu, a basket of fresh macadamia or chocolate chip cookies will be waiting outside my door with BEAUTIFUL notes from children who were PROUD to have me in their building and bragged to their school mates or near by relatives down the street that I was their next door neighbor.

It is difficult to understand that food has been an issue for today’s UH athlete when back in the golden era that was NEVER a problem. Hope it will get better as I am eternally grateful to my time playing for UH with the GREATEST fans in the world who truly took care of me on and off the basketball court.

Mahalo for your thoughtfulness and kindness as I will never FORGET !

  20. hatakeman July 26, 2014 11:28 am

Wasn’t that a ‘silver’ lunch wagon parked under the tree?

  21. al July 26, 2014 11:29 am

from what i saw in the past, the training table is abundant.

  22. jm2375 July 26, 2014 11:36 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

What about the other teams (esp the ones with very few or no scholarships)? How does it affect the post-game meals provided by the booster clubs?

  23. bowwar July 26, 2014 12:00 pm

#19: Rainbow Cliff…I believe that white lunchwagon you remembered near the College of Education was Grace’s.

  24. bowwar July 26, 2014 12:06 pm

IMHO…I was fooled by the phony taxi driver once, so never again…What ever happened to that “new beginning” that we were promised and his support for UH athletics. I dunno about Ige, but he was a “working stiff” long before he got involved in politics, I think he has a better grasp of what the “working guy” faces and the support for UH athletics. Mufi, has always been a supporter of establishing Hawaii as a sport mecca. I have seen him at UH basketball games and he has always been engaging. That doesn’t necessarily reflect his other areas of work (e.g. rail, etc.), but he’s always been pro-UH. Duke surprisingly, considering his background, has never truly supported UH athletics…Oh well, hopefully, one of the candidates steps up to the plate for UH…

  25. bowwar July 26, 2014 12:08 pm

Another two cents…You gotta admit that Mark Takai has always supported UH athletics…Obviously, that’s not the same feeling you get from “Oh Donna”. Just saying…

  26. gobows July 26, 2014 12:17 pm

    19

Today that would be an ncaa violation.

  27. Gottagonow July 26, 2014 1:24 pm

When Mr. Ellison, buys Hawaiian Airline…UH, will get chartered flights to the mainland

  28. Gottagonow July 26, 2014 1:29 pm

What is the old saying? No ask, you no get nothing. Don’t think anyone has asked for assistance from Mr. Ellison or Oprah…..

  29. bowwar July 26, 2014 1:57 pm

#28: They have, we just don’t hear about it…Everyone has their “cause” to support, so neither Ellison or Oprah feels that UH is a “cause” they’d like to support versus other opportunities.

  30. Kapahulu July 26, 2014 2:50 pm

How about the guy who invented the GoPro Camera. He just recently bought 2 properties near Waimea Bay.
GoPro Aloha Stadium has a nice ring to it!

  31. BYee July 26, 2014 2:52 pm

Neal Abercrombie hasn’t done diddley squat for UH Athletics

  32. BYee July 26, 2014 2:53 pm

Haw about the Oracle on campus stadium. I for show will stand on the sidelines for that!

  33. Kapahulu July 26, 2014 3:16 pm

Neal likes to attend and show face at the SSC Arena. Probably gets free tickets?
I remember soon after Neal got elected, he showed up at a UH event at SSC and they introduced him to the crowd and the crowd actually Boo’d him pretty loud.
Now he seems to sneak in after it starts and they no longer introduce him.

  34. Kapahulu July 26, 2014 3:21 pm

I attended the 2014 UH Men’s Basketball Banquet where the Governor said that UH needed help with its Travel Budget and that maybe the State or Visitors Bureau could help out. A lot of us were waiting for Neal to present a check to UH.
Keep dreaming, all empty promises just to get re elected, like when he 1st ran for Gov!
Come on Neal, prove us wrong. Do something positive for UH Athletics. Lead the way!

  35. bowwar July 26, 2014 3:47 pm

#34: Heck, Abercrombie has been doing that (empty promises) throughout his career. He had one of the worst voting records in Congress. I guess we’re all a bunch of fools…

  36. Boolakanaka July 26, 2014 4:12 pm

27-28Gottagonow. With all doe respect, but this topic has been broached, and there is no interest by said parties. That said, aside from them being billionaires and owning real estate interest, albeit large, in Hawai’i, they have no history or intersection with UH sports, thus I find it a bit presumptions to think they should be considered to resolve problems that are inherently the domain of UH and the state.

  37. 3-Prong July 26, 2014 4:28 pm

Just confirming,…..so did “Oh Donna” strong arm her son into UH Law School even without him actually submitting an application first, by calling MRC Greenwood? Did he actually get in?

  38. RainbowCliff July 26, 2014 4:42 pm

#23 bowwar: Yes, you are right it was Grace lunch wagon as $5.00 would get you a GREAT plate lunch. Back then even students would take care of athletes as they not only appreciate us playing for UH but enjoyed our friendship off the playing field and in the classroom. Glad I played for UH then as the ALOHA was every where we go and the compassion for UH then is NOTHING compare to it now. NCAA violation for a basket of cookies totally pathetic !

  39. Old School Dave July 26, 2014 5:13 pm

Grace’s: “Chicken Cutlet, extra mac salad, no chow fun, please.” Still remember the onions in the mac salad.

  40. NotNasti July 26, 2014 5:13 pm

    37. Kim’s son got in . . . eventually. She was curious as to why he didn’t get in, called MRC, who by law (FERPA) could not comment on the application status. She should have asked her son, who had not applied. He applied the next year, and got in. Could have been an underlying reason why she went on attack mode during the “Wonder Blunder” hearings.

  41. BigtimeJoe July 26, 2014 5:30 pm

I say dont feed em until they start winning. We fans are paying our hard earned money for tix and the coaches and players seem to be lethargic and unenthused on the field.

  42. RainbowCliff July 26, 2014 5:48 pm

#26 gobows: NCAA violation today for what happen during my era then I will take my era today with what UH athletes are dealing with now as FOOD being an issue for athletes to eat is really an embarrassment being an NCAA Division I athletic program. It is enough for a UH student athlete practicing daily, going to class, tutoring sessions while performing on game day as winning in Hawaii there is no better place for celebration as all the Islands are happy and proud.

With UH now dealing with all the problems that it is facing today I can only hope that we as fans, supporters, alumni and former players find deep in our hearts to keep supporting all teams as my time there NO regrets but fond memories of the aloha spirit that lives with me today because of the love I received from the people of Hawaii who not just saw me as an athlete but a genuine young person who after years leaving the Island represent them with the highest regards and respect.

    Go Bows, Go Hawaii !

  43. 3-Prong July 26, 2014 6:06 pm

Thanks NotNasti… Oh Donna! Takes on a new meaning.
it’s Takai for me. The guy bleeds Green.

  44. oldtimer808 July 26, 2014 6:12 pm

#41 I would hate for you to be my prison guard. You could fit in nicely with that kind of attitude. Ok won’t go there. These coaches and student/athletes are busting their butts off and I appreciate their effort. Your comment has no substance.

  45. oldtimer808 July 26, 2014 6:14 pm

#36 I agree with you. It is the UH and state problem to resolve. Just because you have a lot of money doesn’t mean you need to be a donor especially when you have no ties to the UH system.

  46. gobows July 26, 2014 6:15 pm

    41

what team you been watching? the players are putting in the work. no talk stink about the players. you can attack the coaches all you like.

  47. Ipu Man July 26, 2014 6:23 pm

    Colt Brennan for Governor…

Me think #1 in circle will be Brittany Hitchcock, Rfr.

  50. Warrior Dave July 26, 2014 10:03 pm

Yea! KGMB is reporting that Tom Apple is on his way out. Unfortunately, UH will have to negotiate a buyout for his remaining 3 years.

  51. WarriorMojo July 26, 2014 10:06 pm

All I wanna say is that before the ivory tower academicians grumble about athletic department buyouts, they better look in the mirror first.

And NEVER EVER again use whatever headhunter service they’ve been using.

  52. warriorfan2 July 26, 2014 10:38 pm

To bad God allow clown like #41 to come out of his mom’s womb.
He should be killed before entering society.
    Real Clown

  53. Old School Dave July 26, 2014 10:38 pm

Rockne to be moving over from West Oahu to take Apple’s place?

  54. mo808 July 26, 2014 10:39 pm

86 Tom Apple? Wassamattah now, UH? 😎

  55. cocobean July 26, 2014 10:40 pm

MRC Greenwood “retired” Ginny Hinshaw and hired Tommy Apple, Tommy A released Jimmy D and hired Benny J., Davey Lassner has released Tommy A. Will there be more dominos to fall once Lassner brings in “his” man?

  56. cocobean July 26, 2014 10:43 pm

left out the BORegents “retired” MRC and brought in Davey L.

  57. SteveM July 26, 2014 10:52 pm

Tom Apple was hired under Greenwood’s watch. Under “her throw JD under the bus campaign”, Apple was aboard for only a month then and did not make a good impression with me, but I hoped it was just him being a good soldier and following his superior’s orders. I was never sure.

In any event, then Interim President David Lassner was at the helm when Chancellor Apple announced the Manoa AD debt would be forgiven last year. All I know is David Lassner is now the permanent president and I am glad.

Thank you, Tom Apple, for your service! Aloha.

  58. Kevin July 26, 2014 11:22 pm

Faces change.. problems REMAIN the same.

  59. hatakeman July 27, 2014 1:21 am

I hope memory serves me correct, but didn’t Tom Apple suggest that Hawaii should move its sports program to DII? This after being on the job only two or three months. Need leadership with vision and commitment to get results.

  60. BigFan July 27, 2014 1:51 am

I hope it’s not because of Blangiardi pulling strings.

  61. maddog50 July 27, 2014 2:57 am

I just want to see some football!!!! Go Warriors

  62. RainbowCliff July 27, 2014 5:13 am

Man, that was quick for Chancellor Apple. He was just here in Torrance, California yesterday attending a Chapter meeting at De Portola Park sponsored by the alumni engineers of San Diego and Los Angeles. Gentlemen was relax, candid and optimistic on UH in the future. I wake up this morning and “BOOM” you are dismiss as the news must of came when he got back to his hotel.

From a pleasant trip to Southern California with in less then 24 hours you have been dismissed. UH is notorious getting rid of you regardless of your circumstance. Now 3 years to buy out over a $400,000 contract as once again money being wasted to get rid of you ala Herman Frazier, Greenwood, the first president before Greenwood and you know the rest.

I gather Norm Chow and Ben Jay better be AWARE !

  63. slenzi July 27, 2014 5:49 am

New training tables rule is one of best things NCAA has done. No more smuggling bread and peanut butter back to your non-scholarship teammates.

  64. slenzi July 27, 2014 6:00 am

Belated Happy 8th Blog-iversry. Does that mean this is the blog that Colt built (Manzeil joke)? In 2006 and 2007 you could have written 10 words on a Murphy’s napking, and people would have snapped it up and discussed it for the rest of the week, the quest for football news was that insatiable. Now the quest is for any good news at all, and to hope that the boo-birds don’t rain on every blog. Times change! #Higgins,Higgins,Higgins

  65. Shoko July 27, 2014 6:28 am

I’m more or less indifferent to the decision by Lassner to terminate Apple for reasons yet to be announced. However, I think its interesting, during the hiring process, the regents decided to nominate him for the UH position when ordinarily, as it has been in the past, an interim president was prohibited from applying. Moreover, when it was announced that Lassner was selected as the next president, it was based on a “continuous term” instead of a typical long-term contract that previous presidents were offered.

It puts the UH presidency in a tenuous position that can easily be influenced by outside groups that have a direct impact into his future at the university. Reminds me of countries that install puppet regimes that are easily coerced and have no real power.

Okay, I admit I watched the Manchurian Candidate last night, and it may be affecting my thought process this morning. Good movie, thought.

  66. Old School Dave July 27, 2014 6:51 am

Another UH buyout being negotiated by the lawyers, no doubt.

  67. slenzi July 27, 2014 7:31 am
