McMackin is today's chat guest

Want the skinny on assistant coach Ron Lee’s resignation? Want an in-depth report on the depth chart? Wanna be a billionaire so frickin’ bad? (Sorry, song is stuck in my head.)

Head coach Greg McMackin will answer your questions during today’s penultimate Warrior Beat Show, which will begin at about noon or so. (I would bet on “so.”)

Pose your questions on this blog or the show’s Cover It Live Section. We will not be taking in-studio questions from the audience.

Please join us.

Why did Mouse Davis, who is the leading candidate to succeed Ron Lee, leave Portland State a couple of years ago?

“Jerry (Glanville) and I got into a pissing match,” Davis said, noting Glanville wanted to call some of the offensive plays. Davis, designer of the modern run-and-shoot offense, told Glanville he could call all of the plays, then resigned as offensive coordinator.

As it is in the biz, Davis and Glanville remain friends.

June 6 is the last day The Advertiser will publish, which means … we’re going to have a blog party June. 5 at Krazy Karaoke.

Stretch has reserved the large room between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., although we probably could go longer if Esme is not finished with her playlist. Esme? Did I mention this is a joint effort with the Pink Side?

Anyway, I believe the fee will be about $15 each to cover the room. We’ll also have door prizes. If you’re interested in joining us, we’re taking a head count on the blog. So, bring your apple-bottom jeans and boots with the fur, this might be (Jesse) James’ last live performance.

Not sure what happened, but this is Katie Grimes’ diary entry:

May 24, 2010 Oakland, CA

Aloha,

We are on the road again. Tonight we are staying at a hotel in Oakland because tomorrow we are flying out from the Oakland Airport and heading to Tuscaloosa! Today makes officially two complete weeks on the road and we’re starting our third week on Tuesday. A lot of people ask if it is difficult to be on the road this long…but if anything it is starting to get easier. Being on the road makes softball feel professional, and it eliminates all the distractions of being at home. Yeah, it would be nice to sleep in our own beds, but I know these hotel beds are more comfortable than the dorms’ twin extra-long beds.

Earlier today when we were still staying in Palo Alto, we lifted at Stanford and did some running on a turf practice field at their athletic complex. It felt good to get in a lift; it allows us to stay strong and keep the edge in our physical fitness.

A lot of people keep asking me about how much this season is emulating the 2007 season, which in a lot of ways it is. In 2007, we had very influential seniors, Tyleen Tausaga and Alana Power; amazing juniors, Brandi Peiler, Kaulana Gould and Kate Robinson; and even better sophomores like Clare Warwick. This season we have the “core four” seniors, great juniors like Melissa Gonzalez and Jenna Rodriguez, and the ever amazing red-shirt freshman, Kelly Majam. So,yes, in a lot of ways, this year’s team is very much like the 2007 team, however there is one major difference, our mentality. In 2007 everyone watched in awe as we climbed the charts in the national rankings and counted every home run for our school record. We played at UCLA as an underdog team for the regionals, and won, which felt like an upset. For the super regional we headed to Tennessee to face one of the most dominating pitchers that ever played college softball, Monica Abbott.

The key difference is in our mentality. We came on strong during our conference season, posting a 19-1 record. We were the favorite in the WAC tournament and the seeded team in the Regionals. Everything we have accomplished has been expected of us after our successful regular season. We have watched our national rankings quietly climb, but no one was really stunned. We know that we are a good team and if we keep working hard we can continue to win. As far as the home run record, I think when the season started and we realized how much power we had, and we knew we could beat the school record. Our regional was not easy, but we have been playing well and we went into the Stanford Regional and took care of business. Overall, we have accomplished so much this season as a team and as individual players but we have not done anything that we did not expect to do.

As for our mentality going into Alabama—the top seeded team in the tournament—is we are going to play Hawaii ball. We cannot worry about who we are playing and what they are ranked. We are a good team and our goals were to come this far and even beyond, and that is exactly how we are going to play. We have an powerful offense and a strong pitching staff that we back up with a smooth defense. Everyone is so excited to continue this awesome journey, and we are going to be ready to play.

  3. Stephen Tsai May 25, 2010 3:09 am

Oh, Ralph, you need to channel your inner singer.

  4. Ralph May 25, 2010 3:15 am

I tried humming, still sounded off tune, maybe I’m tone deaf or plain deaf. But at least I can admit I can’t sing a tune, but its fun watching people enjoy themselves singing the night away.

  5. Ralph May 25, 2010 3:16 am

Since its the Advertiser’s last run, Stretch and Koakane can sing a duet and raise a toast to the Advertiser staff.

  6. Ralph May 25, 2010 3:19 am

Well Ralph you won’t be the only one who dosen’t sing or drink, neither do I an I’m in. Can’t carry a tune in a bucket…….

  15. Pomai May 25, 2010 4:35 am

I like the way Grimes is thinking, hope it spreads to the whole team. You can do it girls, all the way to the National Champions.

  16. Pomai May 25, 2010 4:38 am

Also the bracelets are on hold till Coach Coolen and the girls return home.

  17. 808ike May 25, 2010 4:59 am

When NCAA announced their 64 team softball tournament, 7 Pac-10
and 7 SEC teams qualified for the tournament. After the completion of
the 16 regionals, 6 Pac-10 and 4 SEC teams remain.

Just wondering, which lonely Pac-10 team did not make it to the
super regional and which team came out of that region.

    Just a thought!

  18. 808ike May 25, 2010 5:05 am

    Pomai,

You are awake early this morning.

  19. Garret May 25, 2010 5:23 am

Here is a positive report about Colt:

Moving forward, the most important obstacle for Brennan is to stay healthy, because if he does, there’s a good chance that he will beat out veteran Rex Grossman for the backup quarterback job behind McNabb.

  20. Garret May 25, 2010 5:24 am

Here is a negative report about Colt…if he’s getting less reps than the other 3rd QB option, that would mean that he’s getting very little reps.

First he’s going to have to beat out Richard Bartel for the 3 spot. So far the majority of OTA snaps have gone in Bartel’s direction.

  21. Garret May 25, 2010 5:26 am

If today is the Princess’ last WB show (ST mentioned that last week), has it been explained why she wouldn’t be doing a show next week? The Advertiser will still be around all of next week. Is there some news about Leila’s job situation?

  22. 808ike May 25, 2010 5:27 am

    Pomai & Garret,

An interesting topic in regards to the movements of the conference
    landscape.

  23. Annoddah Dave May 25, 2010 5:30 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Questions for Coach Mac: While staff changes are inevitable, are you actively recruiting a new coach to fill the void like you recruit players? With your 3d season coming up, what are your goals and objectives for the season, (besides winning, of course)?

Stretch…please include me at the Blog Blast. Thanks for setting it up.

  24. Garret May 25, 2010 5:59 am

    808ike,

Pomai said yesterday that all the conference realignment scenarios seemed to be bad for UH, so I thought I’d post a scenario that would actually put UH in a good position after the craziness is over. This really is a *best-case* scenario so I’m not saying this WILL happen…but it COULD happen.

Domino 1: BSU leaves the WAC
This is actually quite likely…we’ll know in a few weeks. BSU would play the 2010 season in the WAC and then play 2011 in the MWC. This would count the BSU’s 2008, 2009, and 2010 seasons in the WAC as BCS points for the MWC.

Domino 2: NO teams leave the MWC this year
This is fairly likely to happen because it seems that the Pac-10, Big 12, and SEC will be content in waiting a year for expansion if the Big 10 doesn’t do anything crazy. If the MWC teams stay this year, it won’t matter if they decide to leave next year…their BCS points will count for the MWC even if they aren’t in the MWC in 2012! If this happens, it is quite possible that the MWC will get AQ status in 2012…even if they are raided next year.

Domino 3: The MWC gets decimated by conference expansion
Let us say that the Big 12 takes BYU and Colorado State (to replace Colorado leaving for the Pac-10), the Pac-10 takes Utah, and the SEC takes TCU to get into the Texas market. The MWC would then have lost *4* teams, including their current top 3, and would need to add a lot of schools.

Domino 4: The top teams in the WAC stick together
*If* Fresno State and Nevada agreed to form an alliance with UH, they could tell the MWC that they would have to add all 3 of them or none of them would leave the WAC. The MWC would be in need of so many teams that they could be forced to add all 3. This would result in UH being in an AQ conference! La Tech would probably go into the C-USA (they should have openings due to expansion) and SJSU/Utah State/Idaho/NMSU would be in serious trouble…

This is where the best-case scenario breaks down. I think that Fresno State and Nevada would happily leave UH behind for an invitation to an AQ conference…the MWC would threaten to take Houston and other schools and Fresno State and Nevada would look out for their best interests. By the way, I think that *UH* would stab Fresno State and Nevada in the back if it meant getting into an AQ conference.

Domino 4: UH has to WIN big every season
Even though the MWC could be an AQ conference in 2012, they will NOT keep that status if they do not continue to do well on the field. If they lost all of their top teams (the only way I can see UH getting into their conference), then the only way they could keep AQ status is if UH, Fresno State, and Nevada won big in their last 2 years in the WAC before joining the MWC.

A new BCS evaluation cycle starts this season. It counts the computer rankings for 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 to determine which conferences are eligible for AQ status in 2014. If UH struggled this season, there is no way that an AQ conference would invite UH if they were worried about keeping their AQ status.

So, in this best-case scenario, UH and any other WAC team has to *earn* their AQ invitation by winning on the field. Teams that lose do not deserve to get AQ status, and will cost their conference their AQ status. Instead of blaming the BCS system or blaming Karl Benson or other schools, UH simply has to WIN or nothing else matters.

  25. Garret May 25, 2010 5:59 am

Got to go to work…hope that the replay works for the WB show.

  26. whitey May 25, 2010 6:03 am

    Good morning Tsaikos.

    Good morning Tsai-kos!!

Love Katie Grimes’, and the whole team’s, attitude. They expect to win…

uhhh, will the Blog Blast be PG-rated? just checking…

  29. haka May 25, 2010 6:15 am

The Wahine will have two days to acclimate in Tuscaloosa prior to facing the Crimson Tide. For now, though, simply getting there is the next step in UH’s postseason journey.

“It’s something they’re accustomed to,” Coolen said. “They’re making memories right now.”

    Bulla would be proud!
    Make memories!
    Go Wahine!

    Game 3 – Sunday, 5/30 1:30 pm HST ??

  31. Pomai May 25, 2010 6:21 am

Garret agree winning is the only way for UH to get ahead. We need to win the WAC this year and next. If BSu does not leave the WAC this year or next and UH wins the WAC for the next two years does that make BSu less desirable for the MWC?

  32. LizKauai [iMac] m/ May 25, 2010 6:26 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    Lots of food for thought.

    Saturday, eh?
    hmmm.

  33. 808ike May 25, 2010 6:28 am

    Pomai,

Not worried what will happen. For UH will not be involved in any
movements. Winning will not change the status of UH because we
will always be a school of a LESSER GOD.

  42. whitey May 25, 2010 6:45 am

Coach McMackin question: This is your 3rd yr and most fans look at this as your “hump” year, winning big time is expected, are you ready for the upcoming season??? Simple yes or no answer will be ok with me. No need to explain your answer.

  43. postmanke May 25, 2010 6:52 am

Coach Mac, win every WAC game no matter what. In the eyes of many your 13-14 record haven’t accomplished diddly-squat @ Manoa. However you, your staff, have coached em up in games that is nothing short of brilliance. in those games you had a solid game plan, the players bought into it and played with intensity and domination. The coaches worked hard on those games and got it done for you. You can win every WAC game with what you have. Stick to it, believe in it, believe in them and run the ball more. =) – Rolo is your modern day run and shoot. This is your third year. As a fan, I’m not worried about the players, you’ve recruited well enough to win every WAC game, you have more than enough talent. I would like to see more of a swagger in you. If it starts pissing people off – who cares. Just win every WAC game.

And forget this slippah’s fridays crap. Thats like having a mind set that it’s a day off. In golf yes, in football? I just don’t see how that is helping. You just look silly yelling encouragement to a player in your slippah’s. enough already with the non sense. the football field is where the Warrior do their battle. Treat is as such. Don’t dis-respect the field by wearing your slippah’s on it. You have only 13 games a year – as the head coach, there are no days off in the season when you have a losing record. Lace em up damn it!

  44. Jason May 25, 2010 6:58 am

Shucks, I won’t be able to make it on the 5th. I don’t think I told any Tsai-kos yet, but I’m going on vacation next week. Leave Monday morning, get back Saturday night. I guess instead of Tsai-ko Phantom starring Liz and Dean, I’ll just have to watch the real show.

Speaking of which, anybody have Las Vegas’ phone number? 🙂

    jm2375,

Heard yesterday from ESPN 1420 that the UH vs BAMA game will air
on Friday @ 12:30. Went to ESPN tv listing for Friday. All the ESPN
channels were occupied at 12:30 except ESPN U listing TBD. Therefore
assumed that slot is slated for softball. Haven’t checked for any updates.

For Saturday, ESPN lists BAMA vs UH @ 11:00 a.m. on ESPN. If a
third game is necessary, they will play again on Saturday shortly after
    the second game.

    GO WAHINES !!!!!!!!
You have made us proud! Make us PROUDER!!!!!!!!

  46. Maverick May 25, 2010 7:04 am

I already know what Mack will say. He’ll say his typical “Ron Lee is a class act. I mean he’s a legend in Hawaii. You know we have some of the best coaches in the country and I give them all the credit. I’m just really proud of them.”

  60. lava May 25, 2010 8:13 am

I have no problems with #59. Should we be disappointed our coach is not a finger-pointer or name-caller?

  61. Stretch May 25, 2010 8:15 am

  70. Old Diver May 25, 2010 9:17 am

    Coach Mack,

I saw your remarks about playing a bunch of people for the first three games to keep the players fresh for the long road trip. Does this include the offense? and more specifically, at the receiver position?

  71. al May 25, 2010 9:20 am

    what to ask the coach?
    he won’t answer it.
    maybe i’ll pass on this…….maybe.

You knew since February that Ron was leaving. Do you have a replacement in mind?

  78. Hayn_Mana May 25, 2010 9:49 am

    Question for Coach Mack:

Coach, I have two recruiting questions for you:

Why do we always seem to be late in our recruitment of top local prospects, many of whom have offers from other schools before we offer them?

Do you believe that our tenacity in recruitment is efficient, given the strength and ferocity exhibited by other schools when targeting our local players?

  79. labrat May 25, 2010 9:49 am

    coach Mack

Why are knowing what UHs entrance requirements for some recruits a problem?

  80. al May 25, 2010 9:50 am

st…how about ron lee as a guest?

  81. Slugger May 25, 2010 9:54 am

    #58, DITTO!

Mahalo to Stephen & Leila for putting together the Warrior Beat shows. I’m in denial. Don’t want to see you guys go. I don’t want this to stop. Leila, hope you end up with an organization that appreciates your talents. I’ll miss seeing you at practices. 🙁

  82. Slugger May 25, 2010 9:58 am

    Hiya, Colomaohana!

It was a surprise to be ‘stopped’ by Mr. C at the Farmer’s Market. Glad to catch up with you & the Moms. See you at the KK!

    GO WAHINE!!!

  83. A-House May 25, 2010 10:02 am

    Coach Mack:

The “media” has always called plays out-of-the-ordinary as “trick plays” such as the statute of liberty with which Bosie St won the Fiesta Bbowl.

However, if the “trick play” is a standard part of your playbook I would not consider it a “trick play”. Therefore, will Coach Rolo be adding twists to the offense that will excite your fans? No need to elaborate; just do it!!!

  84. A-House May 25, 2010 10:04 am

    Coach Mack:

If your opponet will “stack” the defense to either side of the field, will you have a play that will allow a QB to call an audible?

  85. d1島 May 25, 2010 10:04 am

Most likely it will be the last one we’ll do, too.

    😯

  86. Garret May 25, 2010 10:12 am

    ST,

So sad to hear that tomorrow will probably be the last WB show…I get a spare second to check the blog and that news hit me hard.

  87. Garret May 25, 2010 10:15 am

Pat Hill says that BSU is going to be invited to join the MWC as a “reward” for doing well in the WAC. Doesn’t that clearly state that one WAC coach believes that the WAC is inferior to the MWC? Even if he thinks that way, saying that really puts the WAC down. He’s sounding like how BSU sounded for the past few years…probably because Fresno State wants to get into the MWC also.

Fresno State football coach Pat Hill said he expects the Mountain West Conference to invite Boise State soon.

“They’re going to expand. I think that’s a good move for the Mountain West right now. That really helps them. Boise is a very popular item. That’s a reward for doing well,”

  88. Garret May 25, 2010 10:16 am

    Coach Mack,

What do you think about Pat Hill saying that Boise State leaving for the Mountain West Conference is a “reward” for them doing well in the WAC?

  89. d1島 May 25, 2010 10:17 am

    Kuhio Grill 🙁

  90. A-House May 25, 2010 10:26 am

    Kuhio Grill:

One of the absolutely best places to eat while on campus – also, to drink, but, when I think about this statement, I realize that I was to young to drink!!!

WE saw a lot of athletes come in and have great diners individually or in groups or with us. At the 1992 Holiday Bowl, many, many former players made a special effort to thank the Kuhio Grill owner who just happened to be sitting one row behind us. John Woodcock was amongst them and came over to hug him – owner was totally embarrassed!!!

  91. A-House May 25, 2010 10:29 am

    Coach Mack:

Exciting football will always win fans – win or lose!

The “run-n-shoot” may be exciting, but if you pass, pass, pass it becomes mundane for many fans. Hope we see the “run” part play a larger role in 2010 and beyond. Comment?

  92. A-House May 25, 2010 10:30 am

    ST:

Your statement that tomorrow will be Leila’s “last” show leads many of us to believe that she will be leaving soon for another job. Care to comment or will you let her tell us?

  93. Da Punchbowl Kid May 25, 2010 10:32 am

    Coach Mack –

Care to comment about Stephen Tsai, Leila Wai, The Warrior Beat Blog and what they have meant to UH Athletics and football in particular?

The news isn’t looking so good for those two and the blog and we are very saddened and concerned.

  94. Da Punchbowl Kid May 25, 2010 10:33 am

    Leila –

Please make sure my question is asked.

  95. asahi May 25, 2010 10:45 am

    Coach Mack

All along you have been touting that Paipai Falemalu was the best DE coming in to the fall. Yet, you recently announce that he will play strongside backer. I don’t get it. Moving your best DE, a position that is already thin in numbers to another position. What is the logic behind this move???

  96. WWF May 25, 2010 10:46 am

    Coach Mack,

Any plans on giving Coach Rolo some help with the offense and developing our quarterback depth, with Coach Ron Lee leaving the staff?

I would like to see UH become passing leaders in the nation again.

Good luck with the 2010 season!

  97. asahi May 25, 2010 10:49 am

    Coach Mack

Ever since Aaron Brown donned the Warrior uniform you have been saying that he will one day play on Sundays. You have done nothing but praise him and he deservedly so looked like all that you said until his injury. He had a great spring and yet he is being jerked around with Paipai moving over in to his slot at strongside backer. I don’t get it. What is the logic behind this move and what is Aaron Brown feeling about all this now?

  98. NorthShoreFan May 25, 2010 10:51 am

KKall?!?!….Noooooooo!…gonna be on the Garden Isle that Weekend!!!!!……

Coach Mack….There’s lots of talk about Mouse coming back to coach the Warriors. Since we have a OC already and we just lost a WR coach, if Mouse comes back, what will his role be?

  99. d1島 May 25, 2010 10:52 am

  101. asahi May 25, 2010 10:52 am

    Coach Mack

The word on the street is that not several but many players are still not happen about your decision to allow a certain signal caller back in to the fold. We all realize that this year is a pivotal year for you. Is your decision based upon “winning at all costs”?

  102. LizKauai (iChrome) May 25, 2010 10:52 am

    Dang

  103. asahi May 25, 2010 10:55 am

    “…are still not happen about”
should be “…are still not happy about”

  104. al May 25, 2010 10:56 am

lizk…ninety-nine? all these years i thought they were singing “number nine, number nine”.

    oh well.

  105. jm2375 May 25, 2010 11:05 am

OK, just checked the No Clue At All website. They’ve updated the brackets for the Super Regionals. Set your DVRs!!

    Game 1 – Fri 6:30p EDT (12:30p HST), ESPNU
    Game 2 – Sat 5:00p EDT (11:00a HST), ESPN & ESPN3.com
    Game 3 – Sat 7:30p EDT (1:30p HST), ESPN & ESPN3.com (if necessary).

I must have been seeing things so early in the morning. 😳

BTW, all 16 teams went through their regionals undefeated.

  106. LizKauai (iChrome) May 25, 2010 11:05 am

NorthShoreFan- I am not going to abandon you. I decided to stay home and not come to the KK… We can have our own KK… Kauai Kall.

  107. club penguin Cheats May 25, 2010 11:05 am

    Nice article.

  108. LizKauai (iChrome) May 25, 2010 11:16 am

    al- your memory is correct.

COACH MACK: How is the conditioning program going and what do you think the players will be doing this summer?

  109. LizKauai (iChrome) May 25, 2010 11:17 am

COACH MACK: We look forward to seeing you on Kauai again! Any comments?

  110. duffer (iPhone) May 25, 2010 11:17 am

    Coach Mac

On a more personnal note, you have given my kid (not DPK) the drive for exellence on the golf course and in school. He first met you at Waikele and you preached school before sports. He has taken this to heart. His GP has been/is 3.5. His proudest moment is meeting you and Coach Riley having his picture taken with you. BTW it was posted here. So from a parent’s view, MAHALO COACH

  111. LizKauai (iChrome) May 25, 2010 11:18 am

COACH MACK- will there be a Wahine Clinic this year and if so, has the date been set?

  112. LizKauai (iChrome) May 25, 2010 11:20 am

COACH MACK- If Mouse Davis should become part of the Warrior Ohana this year, what would you say are his strengths as a coach?

  113. madeinhawaii May 25, 2010 11:21 am

    jm2375,

BTW, all 16 teams went through their regionals undefeated.

That’s some tough competition out there.. but didn’t Hawaii lose one game?

  114. jm2375 May 25, 2010 11:29 am

mih – not in the Regional. In the WAC tournament, they lost one to the Fresnecks.

  115. al May 25, 2010 11:47 am

    okay i’ll ask a question…

    coach mack

    four questions;

after assessing your spring training period
one, what are the strengths of this year’s team?

    two, what are the weaknesses?

three, who do you feel will have a breakout year?

four, who of the incoming players in the fall do you feel has a chance to contribute this season?

mahalo…looking forward to a great season.

  116. LizKauai m/ May 25, 2010 11:58 am

    COLT WATCH:

    From my friend in VA:

“Liz Colt looked good today. McNabb threw 3 picks and 3 batted down…
Still early but Colt was looking good, hope he gets a shot.”
    GO COLT!

  117. al May 25, 2010 11:58 am

    okay one more…

    coach mack

    two more questions…

one, let’s say that a highly experienced coach who is very well versed with the run n shoot is hired, how much input will he have and what affect will he have with your young offensive coordinator? would he be more of a mentor/advisor rather than one who will commandeer the offense?

two, as the head coach you have the prerogative to veto any play called. will you this year make a more conscientious attempt to trust the coordinators to make the calls without too much intervention?

  118. d1島 May 25, 2010 12:11 pm

When the “J” in AJA baseball meant something 🙁

  119. lava May 25, 2010 12:29 pm

  120. al May 25, 2010 12:34 pm

    d1…what’s with nostalgia today?

  121. Bulla May 25, 2010 12:36 pm

    coach mack,

how will you have The Warriors mentally prepared for USC?

with 100 days to go….have you mapped out your plan to keep them motivated?

Good luck, have a great season!!! GO WARRIORS

  122. Sam Owens May 25, 2010 12:39 pm

How many walk ons did you keep for fall?

Do any of them stand out for this season or next season?

You have more players returning from other colleges to play for you, why is that?
Some of these players have left Full scholarships to wear the Green and Black, what is your view on those players

    IMUA WARRIORS

    A-house,

The “run-n-shoot” may be exciting, but if you pass, pass, pass it becomes mundane for many fans. Hope we see the “run” part play a larger role in 2010 and beyond. Comment?

The first half of the last CFB game at Aloha Stadium was anything but mundane….

First half had one team with 37 plays:
    30 passing plays called
    7 rushing

    293 yards passing
    24 yards passing

    31-0 at the half….

Sorry – we won’t be going to the wrap party for personal reasons, but for those of you who do attend, I am sure that you’ll have a good time.

Stephen: What’s the latest on your continued employment and a new blog section? A lot of good people have left already, but others keep on keepin’ on. I really like the communities that have created by blog hosts.

In the meantime, how will we kept apprised as to what’s going on? As I understand it, there are at least four, possibly five, e-mail lists, made up of special interests beyond sports. Is there a main or master list? If so, who keeps it?

    Back to work….

  140. LizKauai m/ May 25, 2010 1:14 pm

my point was how about more running plays!

several games last year, Idaho for example, UH simply stopped running in the entire 2nd half.

  144. BleedGreen808 May 25, 2010 1:28 pm

Good afternoon to you guys but it’s still morning my time.

Good luck to coach R. Lee in the future and mahalo for you hard work and dedication.

  146. d1島 May 25, 2010 1:54 pm

    A-house,

….second half? What’s wrong with 586 yards passing, 48 rushing and 62-0 final score?

btw, you may wonder why one FG in the first half? They ran on 1st and 2nd down!

  149. d1島 May 25, 2010 2:09 pm

    A-house,

I still talking about the last CFB game at Aloha Stadium.

Why run more? Get better at throwing; it’s what the Former Coach did here. It’s what he’s doing in Dallas.

To the point you were originally making, it wasn’t “mundane” watching that offense work the way it’s supposed to on that day!

    d1:

yep, gottasa agree with that thumping, but was rooting for Nevada from the WAC.

so, why was Nevada not able to defend against the run-n-shoot that day as they have seen it for over a decade with JJ and Mack?

me thinks it was the “horses’ JJ was able to coral and run loose on the field – look what happened to the Texas QB flash that committed to UH only to decommit and go to SMU – now, he is with Portland State (correct me someone if I’m wrong on the current school).

I feel sorry for SMU when JJ decides to retire – who will take over? recruitment? donations?

    A-house,

so, why was Nevada not able to defend against the run-n-shoot that day as they have seen it for over a decade with JJ and Mack?

I have never watched them practice but I’m gonna guess that before practice, they throw the ball; during practice, they throw the ball; after practice, they watch film of how they threw the ball….

I don’t imagine they spent any time on anything resembling a spread option, anything with a TE, or anything resembling a haka….

    d1shima,

The team in Dallas actually uses a TE as part of their package. They used TEs in several games, in red zone situations and other situations. Mouse Davis has said that he doesn’t like TEs in the run-and-shoot, but JJ used a TE early in his time at UH (plus Mauia as a TE/H-back to stop Purdue’s Anthony Spencer in 2006) and is using a TE to exploit certain matchups (or just to throw the other team off).

Article featuring the Rainbow Wahine Softball Team

    by Ari Cutler
    SONAHHR Hawai’i
    05/26/10

You sit and watch a TV commercial in which you are promised to be lured by tropical climates, tranquil waters, majestic mountains, cooling waterfalls, girls swaying in hula skirts, sweet mai tai’s, sunny skies…but college softball? In what can be described as a Cinderella type season for the No. 19/23 ranked University of Hawai’i Wahines women softball team, that would be an understatement for this 2010 season.

Hawai’i is surely not known for being a powerhouse in the world of college softball, at least not up until now. Hawai’i has made a Super Regional before in 2007 (losing to Tennessee) under coach in Bob Coolen who’s been skipper at UH-Manoa for 20 years now.

The Wahines (47-13, 19-1 WAC) are a team to be feared. The Wahines rolled through their own WAC Tournament, then cleaned up in the Stanford Regional over U.C. Davis (10-2), No.15/17 Stanford (6-3) and Texas Tech (7-1) to advance to the Super Regional in Tuscaloosa. They face top seeded Alabama on Friday evening.

The powerful 16th seeded Wahine’s leads the nation in home runs currently at 149 as Kelly Majam,Traci Yoshikawa,Melissa Gonzalez, Jenna Rodriguez and Katie Grimes all hit solo homers in a 7-1 victory over Texas Tech at Stanford’s Smith Family Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Hawai’i pitcher Stephanie Rickettes (27-7) threw a complete game to earn the victory.

Five University of Hawai’i softball players were named to the Louisville Slugger National Fastpitch Coaches Association First and Second Teams. They are third baseman Melissa Gonzalez, utility player Jenna Rodriguez and outfielder Kelly Majam were named to the first team, while pitcher Stephanie Ricketts and shortstop Jessica Iwata were second team honorees.

Majam, the WAC’s Freshman of the Year, leads the UH with a .409 average (76-for-186) and has set new school records with 28 home runs and 72 runs scored and is one walk short of tying the school record of 38 set by Stacey Porter in 2003. The Pine Valley, California (Mountain Empire HS) native also leads the team with two triples, 58 RBI, and a slugging percentage of .957. She had a team-high, 18 game hitting streak earlier this season and is tied with Rodriguez with 16 multiple-R BI games. On defense, Majam has been stellar, with a 1.000 fielding percentage and six assists.

WAC Player of the Year, Iwata, is a freshman from Lihu’e, Kaua’i (Kaua’i HS), leads UH with a school record 21 doubles and is second on the team with 60 runs scored and a .404 average (72-for-178). Iwata also has 17 home runs this season and 53 RBI.

The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams. In addition, conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were added for All-America consideration. A total of 256 players from 116 different institutions comprise this season’s 10 regional teams, including first and second teams for each region. The Wahines are on their way eastward now leaving the comfort settings of Palo Alto behind them.

  308. Garret May 25, 2010 5:45 pm

    d1shima,

I was surprised when I saw a few SMU games last year (especially the Hawaii bowl) and they used TEs on so many plays. That might have been to mess with the heads of the Nevada coaching staff, like how they used 3 QBs in the first drive in 2007.

It might be personnel-driven, as they had a few TEs on their roster when he took over and they recruited some WRs that ended up TE-sized.

  309. d1島 May 25, 2010 5:50 pm

    Garret,

    right.

  312. Kazz ($100.00) May 25, 2010 5:52 pm

Majam said the Tide is a tough team with deep talent. She also apologized for published comments that predicted the Rainbows would win. She said she believed those comments might have been taken out of context, and do not reflect her opinions.

“I didn’t mean it that way,” Majam said. “I apologize.”

Apologize for what? If I remember correctly, Majam said “we CAN beat them”.

Nothing wrong with that. Although I have to admit I had to do a “double-take” when I read that quote yesterday, but still many things can be taken out of context in the print media. Did someone from the NCAA warn her through UH about some kind of lovey dovey “sportsmanship policy”??? 🙄

It’s ok, just remember to apologize again to the Crimson Red fans after elminating Alabama from the NCAA tournament.

A-House wants UH to run the ball more, so I checked on some stats. A lot of people say that JJ didn’t run the ball that much and that UH was more conservative than when JJ called the plays. Adjusting to how defenses defend the run-and-shoot (or 4-wide) is the key, so comparing 2009 stats seems reasonable.

    UH: 292 rushing attempts
    SMU: 378 rushing attempts

    UH: 1306 rushing yards
    SMU: 1427 rushing yards

    UH: 12 rushing TDs
    SMU: 23 rushing TDs

UH top rusher: LWJ with 554 yards, 7 TDs
SMU top rusher: McNeal with 1188 yards, 12 TDs (more than LWJ+Green together)

So, one offense ran the ball more, scored a lot more TDs rushing, and used a TE…and it wasn’t UH’s offense. So, the stats would seem to back up what A-House said.

I still remember a certain game last season where LWJ was *dominating* in the first quarter, it really seemed that he was on a roll that I never saw him on before at UH…and then he basically didn’t see the ball the rest of the game. The comment from the coaching staff after the game was that LWJ stopped rushing the ball because UH was down by 2 TDs in the first quarter…but when he was running the ball that well, I didn’t understand taking him out of the game. Maybe that was just me…

    d1shima,

I doubt that a booster could influence whether or not JJ played a TE or not…the TE worked well so they kept using it. At UH, JJ had a couple of players that might have been used at TE, but they needed them at DE instead (like Alama-Francis). Alama-Francis might have made an awesome TE…but he was All-WAC and a 2nd-round draft pick as a DE, so he clearly was awesome there also.

Held a football in my hand and ran around the yard imagining myself throwing a touchdown or running for a touchdown. Couldn’t wait to grow up and make touchdowns.

Still waiting to grow up and make touch downs, still imaginig myself throwing touchdowns or running for touchdowns. But now it’s all imagination, cannot run around the yard anymore.

    808ike and Slugger,

It’s hard to find stuff out there outside the local Hawaii media concerning the Wahine.

OF COURSE IF THE NATION WANTS TO LEARN ABOUT LIPSCOMB’S FIRST NCAA TOURNAMENT, ESPNU.COM HAS THAT COVERED!!! 🙄 What the heck did Lipscomb do this year anyway other than lose all their games to UH after beating up on a bunch of no-namers… 🙄

The ONLY Wahine article on ESPN-U.com is about how the Wahine were chasing the home run record and 3/4ths of the article ended up being Graham Hays pretty much hinting that the Wahine’s hitting success only had to do with their Easton bats and nothing else.

Someone pointed out that Jenny Yee uses a similar bat and she’s been hitting homers too. WELL, I don’t see anything from ESPN suggesting her hitting being credited to her equipment only.

What a joke. A girl from a AQ conference like the ACC does something SIMILAR to one girl from a WAC conference and the girl(s) in the WAC conference must have good equipment while the girl in the ACC must be extraordinary and a fantastic athlete right?

    DOUBLE-STANDARD!!!!!!!

    A-House,

No matter how honest the gesture, I am almost certain something like a “care package” will fall under the scrutiny of NCAA regulations. 🙄

Girls are being taken care of. As STEPHEN TSAI’S COVERAGE of the Wahine indicated in a GREAT ARTICLE about their per diem situation, they are fed well with sufficient funds on a daily basis.

I envy them. They’re young, they’re living life to it’s fullest, playing and concentrating on softball, and just living the college experience.

Follow the Rainbow baseball team during its trip to Mesa, Ariz., for the Western Athletic Conference Tournament this week. All week long, HawaiiAthletics.com will feature a blog, “Desert Swing,” as the ’Bows take their shot at a WAC title and an NCAA Regional bid.

By: Pakalani Bello, Assistant Media Relations Director

    Day 1: Tuesday, May 25
    2:00 p.m.

The team had its only practice at Hohokam Stadium this morning, mostly just taking infield and batting practice. The first thing everyone in the travel party noticed at the stadium was the dimensions. It is 410 to center with a huge hitters’ eye, 390 in the alleys and 340 down the lines. This definitely isn’t an easy ballpark to send out home runs, which could play to the advantage of the ’Bows.

An interesting note is that all six teams are staying in the same hotel here in Mesa. Four teams, UH, San Jose State, Louisiana Tech and Fresno State, were in by Monday and all made their way down for the complimentary breakfast this morning. All the players seemed friendly this morning, but you have to wonder how they will be when they are in competition mode tomorrow.

Wow, do I feel young now. I have faint memories of Woolworth and Gems. I definitely remember Kilgo’s, I would grab the hurricane preparedness guide every year. (That was when I wanted to be a meteorologist, I’d chart the hurricanes every year.)

Oh, here’s one–Kelly’s on Nimitz, I think it’s where Cycle City is now. We used to go there whenever someone had a birthday, because they would give the birthday person a percentage off their meal, based on their year. And then we’d buy a pie or cake from the bakery afterwards. That was how I first got introduced to tapioca pudding, and the first time I ever ate mahimahi (because I was tired of always getting the same thing). And one time, we saw these huge cockroaches–my sister and Mom jumped out of the booth and ran, my Dad, Grandma, and I were laughing so hard. Yeah, not good to see giant cockroaches in a restaurant, but it was funny as heck!

For everyone else here is another article direct from Alabama’s website:

By Tommy Deas Executive Sports Editor
    Published: Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at 3:30 a.m.
    Last Modified: Monday, May 24, 2010 at 11:23 p.m.

TUSCALOOSA | Patrick Murphy is still scouting and game-planning for this weekend’s NCAA Super Regional against Hawaii, but he knows this much about the Rainbow Wahine: “I know they can hit.”
So does everybody who has played Hawaii. It must be those NCAA-record 149 home runs that gave it away.

Nobody knows better how Alabama and Hawaii match up than the Lipscomb Lady Bisons. They ventured to Hawaii in March and lost to the Rainbow Wahine four times in as many games, by scores of 3-0, 8-0, 5-3 and 5-4. Alabama beat Lipscomb twice last weekend in the Tuscaloosa Regional, winning 5-2 and 6-0.

“Both teams have outstanding hitting,” Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman said. “(Hawaii’s batters) go up hacking and swinging for the fence and they’re going to get their money’s worth, a lot of pop in their swings.”
    Lipscomb players remember Hawaii’s power.

“They rely on the long ball, for sure,” said Lipscomb outfielder Lauren Dortwegt. “Very big girls.”

“It’s going to be a good competition between the two.”

Alabama has its own pop on offense. The Crimson Tide has hit 100 home runs this year, breaking its own school and Southeastern Conference record of 79, and averages 7.2 runs per game. Alabama ranks fifth in scoring, while Hawaii leads the nation at 7.8 runs per game.
“Hawaii has very good hitters,” said Whitney Kiihnl, Lipscomb’s ace pitcher. “I’m not a Kelsi Dunne (Alabama’s ace), so they might not hit her, but they’re the long-ball type of team. They hit a lot of home runs.

    “They’re both good hitting teams.”

While Hawaii slugs away, Alabama may have the edge in other areas — starting with leadoff batter Kayla Braud, who can slap, bunt or hit for either average or power.

“Hawaii, definitely, they’re not a speedy team at all,” Ryman said. “They don’t steal a lot of bases. They don’t rely on the short game at all. I think that’s one of the big differences is Alabama can play the short game. Braud is such a key to the offense.

“Hitting-wise, I think Alabama is more diverse group of hitters, but Hawaii, like I said, they go up and take their hacks.”

Lipscomb gives the nod to Alabama’s pitching, led by SEC Pitcher of the Year Dunne, over Hawaii and ace Stephanie Ricketts.

“I thought we hit Hawaii’s pitchers better than we did Alabama’s,” Dortwegt said.

    Ryman concurs.

“Realistically, I think (Hawaii’s) pitching is hittable,” the coach said. “I thought with the exception of one game … we hit them pretty well.

“From a pitching standpoint, I feel Alabama has the edge. All we saw was Dunne, but having seen (Charlotte) Morgan and some of the others, I think the Alabama pitching is stronger.”

While the offensive numbers may suggest this best-of-three series will be a slugfest, last year’s meeting gives a different indication. Alabama won 1-0 in eight innings last February in Cathedral City, Calif. Morgan pitched seven shutout innings, with Dunne throwing the eighth for the win. Ricketts took the loss, giving up four hits and no earned runs.

Alabama is 3-0 all-time against Hawaii, having also won twice in 2005 on a trip to the island.

Hawaii won’t lack for confidence. Freshman outfielder Kelly Majam had this to say about Alabama in the Honolulu Advertiser after the Rainbow Wahine defeated Texas Tech to win the regional in Palo Alto, Calif.: “They’re good, but we’ll beat them.”

A Wahine is a softball player from the University of Hawaii, aka Na Wahine.

Most of the time we would take a taxi back to my grandparent’s place on Hall St.. There were times we’d walk home, through A’ala Park, probably not in the middle of the night, but it was SAFE!

The list of all the theaters I remember that are no longer.

The Japanese theaters: Toyo, Kokusai, New Kokusai, Nippon.

American theaters: King, Queen, Princess, Liberty, Rosevelt, (was a family theater way back) Palama, Liliha, Kapahulu, Pearl City, Waipahu, Haleiwa,
the 3 Waikiki theaters, Varsity, Cinerama, Kapiolani, Consolidated 4 plex across of Longs Pearlridge.

Drive Inn: Kam, Sunset, Kailua, Kapiolani.

The military bases had theaters but I don’t know the names.
Also I think there were theaters in Wahiawa, Waialua, Ewa. Was there any in Kailua, Kaneohe and if there were what were the names of them?

    d1,

American? as in theatre? Don’t know…I think someone once told me it might have been the Palace? but I was 5 years old, so I didn’t know what theater. I just remember being able to go backstage and watch the men put on their make-up & costumes. Then sitting near the front of the theatre watching the operas. It was cool. That memory is vivid, in Living Color. Perhaps that’s why I like opera today…

HAVING A BLAST: Traveling to Tuscaloosa
    5/18/2010 10:46:56 PM

Follow the No. 19/23 Rainbow Wahine softball team during its current post-season road trip. All week long HawaiiAthletics.com will feature a blog, “Having a Blast” chronicling the team’s post-season journey to the NCAA Super Regionals in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Hawai‘i swept through the Stanford Regional, defeating UC Davis 10-2, No. 15/17 Stanford 6-3, and Texas Tech 7-1. The ‘Bows will now take on host, No. 3/4 Alabama.

Tuesday, May 25, 2010 Today was travel to Tuscaloosa day for the softball team. Since we stayed the night at the Oakland Hilton right by the Airport, we didn’t have far to go, so we loaded all the vans at 11:00 am and left soon after for Oakland Airport. After some confusion at the check-in since there was no group check-in available, we all had to line up in the queue and go one by one.

After we made it through the line, we made it to the gate, grabbed some lunch and then boarded the plane for our long trek across the country. We had a short layover in Phoenix, Ariz., (we stayed on the same plane) where we picked up more passengers for the next, longer leg of the trip to Birmingham, Ala.

We arrived in Alabama after 9:00 p.m., got our rental vans and our baggage and headed off towards Tuscaloosa. It’s a pretty straight shot from the Birmingham Airport on the I-20 West/I-59 S to the University of Alabama. Our vans finally rolled into the Hampton Inn (our home for the next few days) at 11:30 p.m. We had a brief team meeting in the lobby before breaking up. Some of the vans went back out to forage for food since the flights we were on only offered peanuts and drinks.

The team will get a good night’s sleep and have a late wake-up/breakfast before we head to practice at 12:00 p.m. The University of Alabama has been very welcoming, allowing us to use their softball complex for practice tomorrow.

  542. mctruck May 26, 2010 4:14 am

Just wondering if the Wahine softball team takes a nutritionist with them to make sure that their eating right/healthy on the road? wouldn’t hurt although that would be an additional expense, no?

Wow!!, what a reunion of sorts….Lelie, da-Mouse, maybe?, and Moniz!!
I think Lelie has gained a bunch of experience what with his eight(8) years of NFL experience…talk about fortifying our reciever corps!!Add the Mouse to the mix, and WOW!!, laulau. Planning four deep at the QB position is also a plus. Gearing up for a stronger running game would add to the potential of a more potent offense……makes me salivate!!

    Have a great day everybody.

Good night my time and good earl morning your time. Just got back from the expo and spent the whole day there. Went to about 12 pavilion. Interestingly, there is this young man with a sign with the number 6 and some chinese words next to it and couldn’t figure out what it meant. Luckily, there was this chinese couple who overheard me asking the young man what it meant. The couple told me that it takes about 6 hours to get to the pavilion. Yes, six hours ladies and gentleman. I don’t see how someone could stand in line for six hours to see the inside of the Korean pavilion.

I don’t know when I will be back. As of now, the plan is to be back on June 2nd and back to work on the 5th. However, if the company approves my request to move my days off around, I would likely travel to the Philippines. Also, I don’t live in Kauai anymore. I lived in Kauai for about a year two years ago. However, if I don’t get called in to work that day, I don’t mind traveling back to the garden isle for the day.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

  576. best tiffany lamps June 10, 2010 5:41 am

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

  577. detox foot bath June 10, 2010 6:22 am

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

  578. detox foot spa June 10, 2010 3:22 pm

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

  582. all air jordan June 10, 2010 9:15 pm

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It’s very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

  583. best tiffany lamps June 11, 2010 12:03 am

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.
