Wilton to leave UH

After 17 seasons, Mike Wilton is retiring as head coach of the Warrior volleyball team.
Wilton filed for retirement from UH a month ago, and was set to make an announcement at the end of this season. But he moved the announcement to today after news leaked.
Wilton already has accepted an offer to serve as an assistant coach for the Brigham Young women’s team.
Wilton and his wife will move to Provo this summer. Three of their five adult children  and their families live on the Mainland. Wilton is a high official in the Mormon church, which administers BYU.

    It’s a good day…

…Regarding the Maui scrimmage, another thought surfaced. For some of these boys, I’m thinking, will have put so much of they’re time into the UH football program, namely off season workouts, Spring and Fall Camps and regular season practices. Yet for a few of them they’ll probably never make the 64 man traveling roster. So I’m thinking, gees, it must be a big day for them today to experience jumping on a airplane, going through all the traveling rigors–some of which the heralded players take for granted…and even though it’s only to Maui it’s something they can absorb, make they’re eyes come bigger and add some remembrance they can store away once their playing days are over.

And I like to express my empathy to those unheralded players making up the Warrior roster…and making the Maui scrimmage…and showing some recognition to them. Yet, none the less, knowing they are a few probable steps behind their heralded team mates and knowing, too, they’ll probably seldom (or never) see they’re names on the 64 man traveling roster.

So I’m thinking that today’s scrimmage adds some enrichment to they’re Warrior football experience. And I’m very happy for them. Truly, I am. And I would think the coaches are, too, likewise.. For myself, I’ve always likened the underdog…and it’s not to say I have anything against the elitist. But for one day, for one simple road trip, and maybe perhaps, in they’re careers they ( the less heralded players that seldom go on the road trips) have a sense of belonging unlike the other road trips where they’re delegated to staying back here…and watching they’re team mates on television.

So, in summary, seeing how the lesser heralded players giving it everything they have for the program, but are seemingly and rightfully are left off the 64 man when the team goes on the road… it indeed makes me smile greatly knowing that today’s scrimmage on the road ( inclusive to all on the roster) gives them something they can cherish…and a little of a rewarding experience for their labor of love.

  21. Ralph April 11, 2009 12:24 pm

Al we don’t need two shooting point guards, we need play makers who make the other four better and contribute to the scoring. the point needs to be a slasher, passer and willing to drive to open the defense for the other bows to be open for good shots…good points aren’t the gunners but can score on what few shots they do take…i’d like to see a point who controls the flex offense and the only stats that i care about is his assist to turnover ratio, free throws and rebounds…

  22. warriorfanny2 April 11, 2009 12:24 pm

    double-play, 5-4-3. Hawaii 13-11!!!! yoo Jobu!

  23. Ralph April 11, 2009 12:26 pm

so do we have any pitching left…i’m sure nevada is in the same hole

  24. PONO April 11, 2009 12:27 pm

Ralph totally agree with you. It all starts with the PG because they have the ball in their hands every single play. Look at NC and Mich St they had Lucas and Lawson. The PG is the foundation of every team since they control the tempo and get the ball into the right hands at the right time.

  25. HiFlyer April 11, 2009 12:27 pm

Uh wins 13-11. good to see Kolten Wong got another hr, does anyone remember what he hit on thursday.

sloppy base running is on the base coaches too.
it’s a team effort that goes for coaches and base runners although getting picked at second has got be embarrassing for my couz vinnie.

  30. Ralph April 11, 2009 12:31 pm

Jason thanks for the wahine bb attendance….good to note that at some point in 2000-2003 they were able to garner 3000+ interested fans…my question is, actual peeps or tickets issued…nonetheless, a lot better than the 200 or less under e-bolla this season…

  31. d1島 April 11, 2009 12:32 pm

You know? I never understood why Vince Goo’s team did so poorly in his last year as Coach. Was it because he was being ushered out the door? Or was it just poor chemistry within the team? I do remember watching the games and wondering why he wasn’t really into the game like he usually was.

BUT, Goo had that ability to take what players he had and win more games than he lost. He found a way to make teams out of players without making excuses for what he had or didn’t have. Sometimes you could feel the rivalry between the men’s team and the women’s team. Not so, anymore.

  35. warriorfanny2 April 11, 2009 12:38 pm

eh, our pot-bellied OL needs richard simmons for trainer.

  36. madeinhawaii April 11, 2009 12:38 pm

Spencer Smith nabs another pick for the defense.

Is Alexander making poor decisions? Or is the defense really coming into their own?

  37. Ralph April 11, 2009 12:43 pm

of the people mentioned as potential wahine BB headcoaches, Alika, Petersen, Wolfe and Bonvicini, I like Bonvicini as a coach with the most experience with a women program, knows recruiting, lots of game management experience, and many more intangibles. more importantly, she is the only woman candidate for a women sports and she is the best qualified to date.

  38. LizKauai (iPhone) April 11, 2009 12:44 pm

Wow. Nice pix! Have a great day! Gotta meeting now.

  39. HiFlyer April 11, 2009 12:45 pm

Ralph – right now sunny, but looks like there might be some rain clouds moving in over manoa.

  40. Ralph April 11, 2009 12:46 pm

did alexander throw the two picks?

  41. warriorfanny2 April 11, 2009 12:48 pm

    kolt went 4-6 on thurs w 3 rbis. today, i believe he went 4-5, 2 r, 5 rbis. that would give him 8-11, 4r, 7 rbis in 2 games.
kolt is hitting bigball @ peccole. da cheken is bled.

  42. madeinhawaii April 11, 2009 12:49 pm

    Ralph…

dunno. BUT I’d think so as it’s a scrimmage … so same offense.. same defense.. rather than a green vs white game, I think.

Wonder how many fans showed up for the scrimmage.

  43. warriorfanny2 April 11, 2009 12:56 pm

im not kool w bonvicini. she was fired at ariz w a year remaining and finished 10-20 for 2008. she is past her prime and already into the twilights.
get creative and hire someone w energy that will grow our program.
look, we have too many on the payroll at manoa staying for retirement. it seems we have no problems getting coaches to come here but must wait until they croak to get them out.
thats all part of the union-mindset at cooke–think about a shot-in-the-arm coach and someone that will get this program energized and up n running.

  44. d1島 April 11, 2009 1:03 pm

A “little birdie” says over 1000 at War Memorial; GA didn’t throw the piks

  45. madeinhawaii April 11, 2009 1:04 pm

Bonvicini is only in her mid-fifties. Far cry from retirement. She had a bad spell, who hasn’t?

I’d like to know more why seven of the assistant coaches left in the past three years. The last was her closest associate who apparently left to spend time with family (may have been the writing on the wall, as well). The previous 6, opens some questions. Maybe it was just bad timing. From the death of a very special player, disciplinary suspensions of other key players, and assistant coaches getting better offers elsewhere. It can happen. Sometimes, you just need to pull back and collect yourself, again.

But her over-all record is like Vince’s. And it wasn’t that long ago when she was winning against some very tough competition.

  46. madeinhawaii April 11, 2009 1:06 pm

    D1shima,

I thought the 1000 was at the start of practice. Scrimmage started a couple of hours later.

Nice to know it wasn’t Greg that through those piks.

  47. madeinhawaii April 11, 2009 1:06 pm

    through = threw

  48. d1島 April 11, 2009 1:08 pm

    mih,

I think the word got out that only had so many Big Macs; that musta hurt attendance 😆

  49. wafan April 11, 2009 1:16 pm

If the HSF was working they could have shipped cases of Big Macs over. Heck, the team could have brought them over on the team buses and equipment trucks. HA!

  50. wafan April 11, 2009 1:18 pm

Anyone remember how many showed at the G/W game last year at the stadium? I think 1000+ is good for a scrimmage this early.

  51. warriorfanny2 April 11, 2009 1:18 pm

bonvicini started coaching at Long beach when she was in her twenties and compiled a 325-71 record in 12 years.
    She started coaching after playing.
So, Y cant we be creative and look for someone youthful?

    enuff w da old farts.
think out-of-the-box, she is in the sunset of her career with an atitude.

  52. d1島 April 11, 2009 1:20 pm

  54. warriorfanny2 April 11, 2009 1:27 pm

    third round finals at augusta:
cabrera and perry t/1 @-11, cambell -9 and furyk -8.
    leftie and @ -4.

  55. madeinhawaii April 11, 2009 1:27 pm

    Warriorfanny2,

Probably because most coaches with a minimum of 5 years of “successful” coaching won’t be looking for a new job, just yet. You’d have to take a gamble on an unproven one. And finding one that knows what winning is all about, is key. As a player, too, Bonvicini was outstanding.

“Bonvicini was inducted as a player into the Southern Connecticut State University Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 1994. In October 1996, she was inducted as a coach into the Long Beach State Hall of Fame. Bonvicini began her coaching career under the wings of two of the game’s finest: Darlene May of Cal Poly Pomona and Dr. Frances Schaafsma of Long Beach State.”

She’s female. She’s probably got the best credentials of anyone applying and will probably come with Vince Goo’s nod of approval.

  56. wafan April 11, 2009 1:28 pm

    d1 . . .

    12K to 15K. Wow! Great for O’ahu!!!

Did you watch the Georgia scrimmage today? Oh my. Their stadium looked like it was a regular season game. Geez.

Still, we are building the momentum and the tradition of a championship team. It will take time.

What is that saying? Good things come to those who wait. Maybe, patience is a virtue. Or something like that.

  57. duffer (iPhone) April 11, 2009 1:30 pm

GA did play. Inoki looks good at RB!

  58. wafan April 11, 2009 1:32 pm

    Good pix today!

I have wracked my brain cells (all two of them) and cannot remember where Tiffiany’s and Tasty Crust are located. I remember the Tasty Crust sign in the past and keep on “seeing” it near the old-folks home in Wailuku.

  59. Pauoa Boy April 11, 2009 1:33 pm

Eh dat Princess plate look onolicious…wish I was there.

Anyway, nice pics and hope the boys are doing well, having fun, and enjoying their experience on Maui. For some it could be a once in a lifetime deal?

Tua look pretty thick nowadays what he weighing now 240-250lbs.?

  60. duffer (iPhone) April 11, 2009 1:33 pm

    Sorry GA did NOT play

  61. madeinhawaii April 11, 2009 1:34 pm

    What?
I thought the Tsaiko versions were…

Good things come to those with Weight.
    Patience is a burnt toast…
    or… gimme something like dat!.

  62. d1島 April 11, 2009 1:35 pm

    Montplaisir goes yard! 🙂
    BaseBows cut lead to 1-2….

  63. wafan April 11, 2009 1:35 pm

We knew Funaki could scramble and run. All he has to do is remain healthy throughout the season.

    Actually, they all do!

  64. Pauoa Boy April 11, 2009 1:35 pm

Howz da Oline boyz looking today? I think with Coach Gordy these boys going bring back the best OLine in the WAC status once again.

  65. wafan April 11, 2009 1:37 pm

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! Well stated.

  66. Pauoa Boy April 11, 2009 1:38 pm

Inoke “Da Turbo Tongan” Funaki going be mean for us at RB? He can take da hits and dish it out too, bruddah is pretty thick and quick! Once he get da blocking down, he going be au’ryte!

    PB . . .

Are you wishing you could be there? Or just in Hawai’i in general?

  73. d1島 April 11, 2009 1:42 pm

Were there refs on the field? Were they calling any holding penalties?

  74. Pauoa Boy April 11, 2009 1:43 pm

Mahalos duffer… I think once the OLine get everything together they can dominate… Our boys is definitely physical in the trenches but if can play with smarts and as one unit they can be a force this year!

  75. duffer (iPhone) April 11, 2009 1:44 pm

D1, yeah but I think they were rookies! No holding calls

  76. wafan April 11, 2009 1:45 pm

Holding and personals. Dang. Killed us so many times last year.

  77. d1島 April 11, 2009 1:46 pm

The thing about intra-squad stuff is always the “two-edged sword” aspect.

If the OL looks good, does that mean the DL needs help?

If the QB’s and Receivers roll it up, does that mean the DB’s and LB’s are lacking?

  78. homey ℞ April 11, 2009 1:46 pm

Ralph – She has a 7′ 6″ fun board. I can use it too…even though it’s pink. For a beginner, I’d suggest a longboard (around 8′ – 9′), then if she doesn’t like it you can use it. I’m looking into getting a stand-up paddle board.

    GO BOWS

    GO WARRIORS

  79. Pauoa Boy April 11, 2009 1:46 pm

    wafan,

Both actually, wouldn’t mind if I was station at home again cause eventhough I live Cali, frikkin cold and not the same. Plus I wish I could see the boys play or at least da practices before I gotta take off to the land of sand. Besides Maui is my favorite island cause get dat onolicious guri guri ice cream fo cause buss mout akshon!

  80. d1島 April 11, 2009 1:48 pm

    Thanks duffer…
…don’t let me keep you (and your entourage) from getting to the next meal! 😀

  81. Pauoa Boy April 11, 2009 1:51 pm

As long as the OLine play as one unit and can hold their ground, I’m happy. The DLine boys get advantage anyway this early in the year, plus when you get guys like Fonoti, Meatoga, Savaiigaea, Tufaga, Purcell, Hafoka, etc… no matter how good you, they still going wreak havoc and katoosh your QB!

  82. Piper's son April 11, 2009 1:54 pm

    DUFFER:

Any word on why GA did not play?

  83. letsgowarriors April 11, 2009 1:56 pm

pauao boy, j taylor is the player that got sick, not blount.

  84. duffer (iPhone) April 11, 2009 2:01 pm

basebows not looking good in the second game down 4-1 top of 4th.

  86. madeinhawaii April 11, 2009 2:23 pm

2-4 now… maybe it’s a new strategy.. wait till the later innings to take the lead.. give Nevada less opportunities to catch up again. The see-sawing in the past two games must have given the fans some near fainting spells.

  87. HiFlyer April 11, 2009 2:24 pm

    2-4 bottom 5th

  88. Da Punchbowl Kid April 11, 2009 2:25 pm

Did Rego play? If so, how did he do? It would be nice for a Maui boy to get a few touches at least.

  89. letsgowarriors April 11, 2009 2:28 pm

rego played, had some good runs, 1 run for 15+ yards. scored a TD but was called back bc of holding.

dont worry, kolten and vinnie should each hit a homer before the night is over. bows will come back.

  90. wafan April 11, 2009 2:33 pm

    Thank goodness for the blog!

  91. madeinhawaii April 11, 2009 2:44 pm

From a colleague who is a major Cougar Booster.

The Cougar Spring Scrimmage looked good with renewed interest and dedication to the team. The running plays clicked with strong blocking up front. The D will come into its own by the time they tackle the Warriors in early September. Still no word on the kick-off time.

  93. Da Punchbowl Kid April 11, 2009 3:26 pm

Thanks for the info, LGW. Do you have any other highlights to share? I know that al will appreciate them too, because Sweety and I ran into him and his lovely “Boss” at Sam’s Club.

Two hours ago, Peaches and I ran into Curveball in the parking lot of Kiawe Grill and the Chinese restaurant he just got a take-out from.

Guess Peaches and I are having “eating sympathy pangs” with the Maui cattle calls — paralleling great amounts of eats (but not as much fun).

Kiawe Grill for lunch and we are going to Genji’s for dinner too…around 7:30 PM. I’m addicted to their chicken katsu and Peaches likes the fried chicken and shrimp tempura. Her daughter likes the hamburger steak. Don’t know about karaoke — haven’t made private room reservations for this week, but maybe… 🙂

Finally back from my trip and I’m exhausted. We didn’t go home after Vegas, we stayed with friends in Whittier last night and spent the day with them at the Discovery Cube today. Great time, but my whole family is worn out.

It was great to see 702WarriorNation at the Buffet at Asia during a last-minute planned lunch. 702WN left a message with las vegas, but he was probably busy. Wish I could have attended the Maui practice/scrimmage today–I appreciate all the reports from practice, but there is nothing like being there!

  97. Garret April 11, 2009 5:22 pm

This article about how Miami’s management is looking to dump John Beck (drafted by Miami earlier in the 2nd round where they also drafted Samson) mentions how Samson and Reagan weren’t bad players…Miami didn’t want them because the new management wanted new players who fit their system.

Only a few weeks ago, the Dolphins traded starting center Samson Satele to the Oakland Raiders, and that meant yet another player drafted by Randy Mueller and Cam Cameron in 2007 failed to meet the needs of new bosses Bill Parcells, Jeff Ireland and Tony Sparano.

Of the 10 players drafted by Mueller and Cameron two years ago, only four remain on the roster because that draft was supposed to build a different kind of team and those players didn’t necessarily fit the team Parcells and Co. are rebuilding.

That didn’t make Lorenzo Booker, Reagan Mauia and Satele bad players, it just made them misplaced and expendable.

Great to hear reports coming out of Maui.

Best of luck to Coach Wilton on his future endeavors. Guess that’s anodda coach JD and company gotta replace.

So the BaseBows split the doubleheader. Overall they split the road trip, so I guess things are looking fine for now records wise, although it sounds like they could use some pointers on base running. If they can take at least 3 of 4 from Sacramento State next weekend, I think they’ll be fine the rest of the way. Continue to at least split on the road and take 3 of 4 at home and they’ll be cruising into the NCAA Tournament.

  109. madeinhawaii April 11, 2009 6:58 pm

Thanks to Coach Wilton from some memorable years of Men’s Volleyball. I’m sure he’ll do exceptionally at BYU with the women’s program. Best of luck to him.

Da dark side tour must be going strong. No reports from any of them. 😀

  119. warriorfanny2 April 11, 2009 8:43 pm

    Kongrads to Kolt!

In the three-game series against Nevada, Kolt hit .666 (10/15) banged out 10 hits, scored 5 runs and drove in 9, plus had one BB.
Kolt homered twice (6,7) and matched that number in doubles (7,8).
Wong leads the bowz in runs (30), hits (44) and HRs (7).
Kolt’s .336 BA and 28 RBIs are second on the team.

He most certainly will be nominated for WAC/POW honors.
Uncle Don remarked during the game SAT, that he would have to go back in time before he could match a HAW-bred product as talented as Kolt is displaying in his frosh year for the rainbows.

The bows had other great hitters this series as they banged out 48 hits, 30 runs, 11 doubles and 7 HRs.

On the D side the bows D made 9 errors on the field resulting in 4 unearned runs.

Our pitchers didnt bring their control, issuing 18 BBs, 11 in the first-game loss in Xtra innings.
They werent effective when throwing strikes, allowing 46 hits and 30 ERs….yikes!

We fell asleep on the basepaths and were picked off of second and first in crucial situations that were rally killers.

That is a key position and we need somone to step-up to top WAC caliber if we expect to improve on D….not just a starter.

  127. Garret April 11, 2009 9:15 pm

Best wishes to Coach Wilton. There seems to have been several times where he was close to taking a job at BYU…this way he can retire from UH and still help out at BYU.

It will be interesting to see who applies to replace him…the UH job has to be one of the most attractive men’s volleyball positions available. With so few teams playing men’s volleyball, and with the attendance and TV for UH games, it has higher visibility at UH than just about any other men’s volleyball program. However, budget cuts (3 to a room, one day less on road trips for travel) and the travel burden will make it tough for Wilton’s successor to match his success.

  128. Garret April 11, 2009 9:16 pm

I still believe that Coach Wilton and his team won that national title…and if HF had fought for it then UH would still have that banner displayed.

On the issue of pointguards for the men’s BB team, I hope people will reserve judgement until we see what the 2 kids can do. They are supposed to be legit PGs WITH the ability to drive & hit for a high percentage outside. We really lacked the outside threat in a number of games this past 2 seasons; I think Coach Nash is addressing the issue. Although I didn’t dislike Parghalava, his shooting & ability to create was erratic & his defense was nonexistent. The incoming kids sound pretty dynamic & if Kareem & Hiram keep improving, we can platoon players. Let’s hope they can land a quality post player or dynamic forward.

  167. Ralph April 12, 2009 2:15 am

I wonder what time the bars close on Maui, only duffer and chawan cut emerged from the abyss of the dark side to post, or did whitey take them into the bowels of happy valley for an all niter…

Ken Rowe played early 1980s, from the Hilo Rowe volleyball family. BigHilo can probably add more info about him.

Happy Easter to all Tasikos near and far!

Just beginning to crawling out of the “black hole” called sin city – still wobbly – not enough sleep whenever I go there with this special group of friends!

    Good luck to Coach Wilton!

Happy Bifday to Florida Patti ( and out best to Ted )!

Coach Nash starting to build a solid foundation to the BB team!

    OK, back to sleep.

Every practice was scripted before Spring ball started.

It seems that yesterday was about finding who would be the back-ups in the depth chart for the rest of Spring so that rep counts can be established for the rest of the practices.
No need special teams yet because they are usually manned by those who are 2 and 3 on the depth so need to establish who is in those spots first.
If Symonds is the Kicker he can practice on his own on Oahu just as easily as on Maui.
Just going thru the motions at this point with ad hoc line-ups to please spectators doesn’t seem to be a priority for Mac.

With Wilton retiring, is it time to retire the Men’s VB program, as well? I like watching VB but there are just too few teams left and the attendance levels seem to have also been dropping. Or do we need to keep it for our D-1 status?
