The Warriors are scheduled to open spring practice Monday, March 30.
They will spread their allotted 15 practices over four consecutive weeks. Spring training will begin after the end of spring break (March 23-27).

I ran into former UH linebacker MIcah Lau, who said he will serve as a student manager this semester. He is on track to earn his bachelor’s degree in May.
13micah.JPGMicah Lau

The student manager program serves as a work study. Because the player already will receive the equivalent of a full scholarship, it allows for the player to give back to the program. What’s more, it provides experience for a player interested in coaching.
Brad Kalilimoku and Jake Patek served as student managers during the fall semester. They earned their degrees in December.

Chris Williamson, a punter from Georgia, has expressed an interest in joining the Warriors.

Josh Leonard just called — by accident. I guess it’s the opposite of a dropped call. Anyway, he’s training in Arizona under Chad Ikei’s direction.
He has heard from about 20 teams.
Leonard said he weighs 290 with 20 percent body fat. He said the goal is to add 10 pounds but drop his body fat to 15 percent or lower.

Players want to be young, which means Mainland ones go home. Plus, I think they close the dorms during that time. Mack didn’t want to practice for two weeks, have a break, then practice again.
By the way, I think the spring game will be during the day. They were considering having it at Cooke/Ching but now it looks like it’ll be back at Aloha Stadium.

guess da bj/gsp hype can unofficially start w/ 2nite’s special on spike…pretty exciting next couple weeks
    4 days til championship weekend
    17 til bj/gsp II
    18 til SB sunday
    21 til LOI day
and littered in between, our senior boyz in their respective all star games, and hopefully more positive news leaks from ST on da recruiting front

  52. Garret January 14, 2009 10:13 am

The Washington Post’s Redskins Insider says that Colt won’t be ready to be a *backup* QB until 2010!

Third quarterback Colt Brennan remains one of the most popular dudes in town, it seems. Some fans called for the extremely raw youngster to play, starting about, oh, July 21. Should that wish be granted in 2009, then close up shop, because I don’t think it would be pretty.

A realistic goal is that by 2010 Brennan is ready to be a back-up. He did essentially nothing besides take some snaps with the scout team, and it’s unlikely he will get much work once training camp is over. He’ll get more playing time in preseason and, if he throws a few TDs against some CFL and UPS guys, well, I’m sure my inbox will be slammed again with emails.

  57. Garret January 14, 2009 10:19 am

NMSU is in a difficult situation at QB, with their projected starter leaving during dead week with only a few weeks left of recruiting. None of their other QBs has taken a snap in a D-IA game, and they were recruited for a different offensive system.

Tuesday’s departure of quarterback J.J. McDermott leaves first-year New Mexico State head coach DeWayne Walker in a tough spot.

With just a few weeks of recruiting, Walker and his staff will need to get on a quarterback real quick and the staff will have to get someone that has a chance of playing right away.

He was tall and he showed potential at times in practice. McDermott did have experience and his departure hurts NMSU in that sense. Ohio native Trevor Walls and Hatch Valley High School graduate Alex Carson are also on the NMSU roster, but both have no Division I-A experience.

  58. homey ℞ January 14, 2009 10:19 am

owen-16 – can’t wait for the bjp vs gsp II. gonna be a good one. this time bjp will be in shape! that’s the beauty of mma, on any given day, make a mistake and you pay for it.

  59. Garret January 14, 2009 10:20 am

    NMSU also lost a WR.

Also leaving on Tuesday was receiver LaVorick Williams. I spoke with Williams, who is headed to Texas Tech, and he expressed a desire to run track once again and that’s a sport NMSU does not offer.

Williams said he met with Walker and was impressed with NMSU’s new coach, even though he will not play for him. He said he’ll try and play football as well for the Red Raiders.

Williams was a standout for Odessa Permian High School and his arrival in Las Cruces was greeted with enthusiasm by many. He showed plenty of potential in practice, but wasn’t given as much playing time as I thought he should have. It’s hard to say how good Williams is, but my guess is he would have been pretty good for coach Walker.

When a new coach and staff arrive, transfers are almost inevitable. Walker now has a chance to bring in his own people who believe in his system and want to be a member of his rebuilding project.

  74. owen-16 January 14, 2009 10:38 am

GSP did take the more severe beating last time even though he came out victorious. BJ looks like he fights better at 155 rather than the 170, so i’m hoping he takes out GSP in the 1st 3 rounds. nothing more chicken skin than seeing BJ coming out to Bruddah Iz, well maybe Hawaii Ponoi at NOLA 🙂

I hope a lot of our future warriors are like Nielson, who focused on his school work, because UH is not an easy school to get admitted to and the university and the departments do not readily accept transfer credits….if the athlete picks a department that is athlete friendly or known to accept all comers like the sociology curriculum, right JaM, the athlete has a good chance of getting in. You ever notice the number of athletes in colleges majoring in sociology, general studies and general business and surprisingly PE is not high on the list

    GO WARRIORS!!

  112. roysan16 January 14, 2009 12:45 pm

Is this right: if a player signed a letter of intent in 2008, but was denied admission into the school then that player has to again sign a 2009 letter of intent. That being the case, then doesn’t the player have the option to go wherever he wants to go in 2009. If classes started a few days ago, and player(s) that were suppose to be at manoa aren’t wouldn’t this be an ominious message?

  114. LizKauai [Believer] January 14, 2009 12:52 pm

    Re #52: Rotoworld says:
“Redskins beat writer Jason LaCanfora believes a realistic time table for Colt Brennan is that he’ll be ready to be a backup by 2010.
LaCanfora is one of the best beats in the business, so his opinion is worth noting. Still, we liked what we saw from Brennan last preseason and suspect that he’s closer to being ready than the rest of the mid-to-late rounders from the 2008 rookie class. Jan. 14 – 1:25 pm et “

  115. mctruck January 14, 2009 1:04 pm

Hope that Williams guy is not just looking for a free vacation trip to Hawaii for himself and his parent(s) just like that guy who went to Miami after his trip to Hawaii with his mother, and now isn’t on the team either..what’s that called, bachi???

  116. Pomai January 14, 2009 1:08 pm

If all he did was take a few snap’s then what is this guy basing his opinion on?? seems like another non-believer.

Believe he is Jesse Williams, 17 or 18 years old, a 6’6″ 320# OL from Australia who initially commited to Hawaii about 2 years ago.

Graduated early and was working back home until this year. Should have enrolled in Jan ’09, but there was some discussion about all his credits being accepted because of the different curriculum down under.

  131. homey ℞ January 14, 2009 1:59 pm

    Hi Darren:

Long time no see – last time was at the traffic light at S. Beretania and Fort Street Mall.

Will you be going to any “away” games this year? Remember you being in NOLA last year.

  136. Garret January 14, 2009 2:04 pm

Article about how the difficult economic times is changing college football recruiting. Concerns about being able to travel to games has resulted in parents wanting their kids to play close to home…good thing that Mac is doing such a great job with local recruiting.

The economy has affected college sports programs across the nation, and recruiting is another area that is starting to be touched by tightening budgets of universities and the prospects they are seeking.

Some smaller universities have scaled back on recruiting trips or found new ways to identify talent. Coaches have had to answer tough questions about the financial assistance available to nonscholarship athletes. Some high school recruits and their families are considering the costs associated with living far from home.

Programs like Southern California or Florida will continue to draw talent from a national base, Lemming said, but those a step or two down may have to look closer to home.

“For most of the country, it will be more regionalized,” Lemming said. “They’ll have to recruit within a 300-mile radius more than they have in the past.”

  137. (Jesse) James January 14, 2009 2:04 pm

Darren…I actually think that Coach Gerke’s position description was also as an O-line Coach (both he and Coach Smith)….I’m sure you know how difficult it is to change a position description once it’s written, at least for state employment it is…..

  138. Garret January 14, 2009 2:05 pm

Jeremy Childs is leaving early for the NFL.

Coach Chris Petersen announced the decision by Childs, who exits a year early with the second-most career catches by a Bronco. Childs told the Idaho Statesman in November that he would return in 2009 to fulfill a promise to his mother to get his degree.

“I want to play with the team and play with these players as long as I possibly can,” Childs said then.

Childs, a two-time All-WAC first-teamer, had 168 catches for 1,999 yards and 17 touchdowns in three seasons with the Broncos. He set a school record with 82 receptions in 2007. He had a team-high 72 catches last year.

His departure means that only one wide receiver with more than 10 catches last season returns – junior Austin Pettis, who had 49 catches and nine TDs. The Broncos also have junior Titus Young, who was suspended for much of last season, but was a standout in 2007.

  139. Garret January 14, 2009 2:06 pm

    Darren,

That was an interesting find! (J)J’s clarification could be the explanation, but before he posted it sure appeared that one of the surprises would be that Mac has picked a new OL coach.

  140. Darren January 14, 2009 2:07 pm

A-House – You have a very good memory. No, don’t have any plans for the away games this year….we don’t usually do that. The Sugar Bowl was an exceptional situation for us. When I grow up and the kids are out of the house, I’d like to be able to make some trips on a regular basis. How does WarriorMojo keep doing it without getting kicked out of the house???

  141. A-House January 14, 2009 2:07 pm

    Darren:

That job application annooouncement is very interesting considering that there has been nada from Coach Mack about a “OL coach”.

    Is this Gerke’s position?

  142. roysan16 January 14, 2009 2:08 pm

About listening to the BC show this morning. Sometimes I think BC is handicapped because the callers calling in with such redundant questions. One caller calls in observing how big the notre dame OL was. Duh… We know that… I’m thinking to myself. And then he goes on to say Notre dame picks up the creme of the crop of recruits. Wow, again…duh…genuis.. I just close my eyes and wish callers would call in with pertinent questions. Original observations and questions, please. This season when I listened to the coaches show from the willows it seems like 1/3 of the time and the show is with callers exchanging pleasntries with the coach. Maybe I’m a little embellishing but it seems like 1 minute out of everycall goes like this,”Hi coach, I like the great work your team is doing, and we thank you for the great service to our team and community. Our family has been long time supporters of the program and we applaud you for your love for hawaii and the university…and by the way how’s the horse doing”? And the coach comes back with a long winded thank you…and muses the horse is doing fine.. And there goes 1 minute of the show and I’m guessing I along with the many other listeners didn’t absorb anything. And are thinking…gees I wish callers would just get down to the meat and potatoes of questioning the coach and save all the garnish, desserts, pleasantries and applauses for the off season. Succinct, pertinent questions are very few. Questions that pick at the coaches brain, yet shedding some light on a situation so maybe he should look at things differently are the best ones. And I don’t hear too many of these…hhmmm… zzzzzzzz.

  143. A-House January 14, 2009 2:16 pm

Darren, that’s a good point. How does Mojo do what he does without getting into trouble with his wife( whom I have met and is a very gracious lady )?

Moj – you need to shar your “skills” with the rest of us so we don’t always be in the dog house. Does it cost you “big bucks”?

  144. A-House January 14, 2009 2:16 pm

    shar = share

  145. Darren January 14, 2009 2:18 pm

J(J) – Just gotta change two words (or add two words with a slash) on that posting….and that in itself describes the state system that we’re up against. You’re probably right. It’s just good to see that there’s movement on filling the position.

  146. homey ℞ January 14, 2009 2:27 pm

    Good luck to Josh Leonard.

  147. FloridaTed January 14, 2009 2:37 pm

I used to always say I can’t wait ’till the new season starts, but now, wait a minute, I’m 62. What’s the darn rush? As soon as a new season starts, it means I’ve lost another year from a rapidly diminishing supply, lol. Amazing how time speeds up the older one gets.

So, take your time, my dear Warriors, I’ll have patience. Work out, get strong, practice, practice, practice and I will slowly, very slowly, count the days to a new and exciting season.

Why the heck does it take so darn long for us humans to get smarter?

  148. KapoleiWarrior January 14, 2009 2:48 pm

  156. NYUH January 14, 2009 3:48 pm

I’m sure the position is Gerke’s. I doubt Mack would dump Coach Smith after a year, especially when its clear that the offensive blocking suffered from a number of problems from RT to RB and at least their would be some announcement. Now, the CS would leave because of the inappropriate comments on this blog and elsewhere, that is another story.

  180. Garret January 14, 2009 5:49 pm

    Bess talks about Miami’s season.

(On being on a team making this kind of turnaround) “It was special. It was something I definitely will never forget. It’s unfortunate it came to an end. We worked so hard week in and week out and we definitely weren’t ready to go home. That’s the way the game goes; you win some, you lose some. You’ve just got to bounce back and keep your head up.”

(On what Coach Tony Sparano said to the team after the Ravens game) “He said he was proud of us. We can go on and on about making the mistakes we had, the good things we had, but at the end of the day, this was a special season. It’s something that’s never been bad. Hold your heads up high and just know that we’ve got some work ahead of us.”

  181. Garret January 14, 2009 5:52 pm

Samson probably can’t feel comfortable about his job with Miami right now. Not only have the coaches apparently been telling reporters that they want a heavier center, but they just fired the OL coach. I hope that the new OL coach appreciates what he has in Samson and helps him take his game to the next level.

The Dolphins have fired offensive line coach Mike Maser, the team confirmed today.

Maser, 61, worked with Dolphins coach Tony Sparano while the two were on the Jaguars staff in 2002. He is the first assistant let go under Sparano’s watch.

Sparano, a longtime offensive line coach before assuming his first head coaching job this year, isn’t interested in a dual role and is beginning a search for Maser’s replacement.

The line’s progress wasn’t helped with the immediate loss of rookie right guard Donald Thomas in the season-opening loss to the Jets. That forced an inexperienced Ike Ndukwe into action. Then in Game 12 against the Rams, the Dolphins lost their most experienced, and arguably their most effective lineman when left guard Justin Smiley went down with a season-ending leg and ankle injury.

  182. roysan16 January 14, 2009 5:58 pm

A question I would ask the AD or head coach:”If a recruit has already verbaled and pledged his commitment to another school *does it still make sense in bringing him here this weekend* on a recruiting visit. Taking everything into consideration I don’t see any upside for the UH in doing this. Your own intuition would tell you by looking at statistics and probabilities and extrapolating from them you know a kid going to and making his commitment known to a Pac-10 school (and having the chance of playing in his backyard at UCLA) would very unlikely change his mind and opt for Hawaii. Right? I say save your money for recruits that are the diamonds in the rough and have an eye for Hawaii, not one that has already made their intentions and have eyes elsewhere”.

Big Mahalo to all of the Tsaiko Ohana for your Birthday wishes for my Pops as he read the blog today. Those of you who have had the pleasure of meeting him, know that he is a very humble man who savors each day as if it were his last. You brought genuine joy to his day!

His passion for sports is what I’ve learned to share with him for many years. His support during my playing days was tough at times. He made me practice picking up grounders until way after dark. Kept me in the batting cage until I couldn’t swing the bat anymore. Shoot baskets with him until we spelled ‘Horse’ 500 times!…but the key is, we did it together. He was always there for me. Now it’s my turn to be there for him. Happy Birthday Pops!

  198. Kekoa January 14, 2009 7:58 pm

Duffer ~ Pops enjoyed a great lunch with a group of very good friends today. Thursday nite we are taking him out to Red Lobster to enjoy his favorite seafood, (turn away from the computer Rob 25) that is, if they will allow him to have it fresh from the tank, and eat it raw!

  203. Garret January 14, 2009 8:25 pm

Now I feel less badly about Utah not having a chance to play for the national title. Texas tried to schedule a series against Utah…but after signing a “letter agreement”, Utah pulled out of the series. Texas would have played at Utah this past season…if Utah had won that game, I believe they would have played in the BCS Championship game (especially since Texas beat Oklahoma). And Utah would have been at home for that game!

Texas’ less-than-attractive nonconference slate next fall could hurt it in the Bowl Championship Series standings. Last year, though, Texas’ strength of schedule ranked 14th nationally in USA Today’s Sagarin ratings, largely on the merits of the strength of the Big 12.

That might have been bolstered if a three-game series with Utah had not fallen through. Texas and Utah had a “letter agreement” in 2000 on a series that would have played two games in Austin in 2007 and 2009 with an away game in Salt Lake City in 2008.

“Before we got to the formal contract phase, Utah decided not to do it,” Worley said. “They indicated they’d rather not play.”

So in complete boredom, I decided to Google Hawai‘i and see what came up in Google News. Came across an article about tomorrow’s analog TV shutdown. Hope everyone here in Hawai‘i is ready for that!

According to the report, the reason for Hawai‘i’s early compliance is interesting:

Hawaii’s change is happening now so analog transmission towers can be taken down before the nesting season of the dark-rumped petrel, a volcano-dwelling endangered bird.

Never heard of the bird, so I had to look it up. Its Hawaiian name is ‘ua‘u.

  285. Garret January 15, 2009 6:19 am

Looks like Gannett is in some financial trouble. They are asking everyone at corporate to take a week of unpaid time off during this quarter.

Gannett CEO Craig Dubow announced the plan in a memo today, sent to E&P, and posted below. It is followed by a memo from Bob Dickey, head of the newspaper division:

    ****************

Today Gannett is implementing a furlough program across all U.S. divisions and at corporate headquarters. This means that most of our U.S. employees – including myself and all other top executives – will be furloughed for the equivalent of one week in the first quarter. This furlough will be unpaid. Unions also will be asked to participate.

We are doing this to preserve our operations and continue to deliver for our customers while confronting the issues raised by some of the most difficult economic conditions we have ever experienced.

As a result of your feedback, and in an effort to minimize the need for more layoffs, I have decided to take another approach as we enter 2009. To that end, every non-represented employee in the USCP division will be furloughed for five business days during this quarter. That includes me, your publisher, everyone. Unions will be asked to accept furloughs in lieu of layoffs. We all will be sharing the financial hardship.

  286. bighilofan2 January 15, 2009 6:24 am

    Great Morning All!

    las vegas,
Apologies for non-responsive behavior….it was the result of self-inflicted Belly Rubbing Euphoria inspired by Ralph’s alleged attempt at escaping the inevitable encounter with MaryAnne…nah nah! 😉

  289. Garret January 15, 2009 6:41 am

    bighilofan2,

I follow what happen at the corporate level at Gannett because it directly affects the Advertiser and this blog. For example, ST and the rest who are part of the Advertiser union have the choice of taking a full week off without pay or having more layoffs over the next 2 months.

That means if ST does this blog and his Warrior articles that he’ll be working for free! Plus, that really decreases the chance of the Union and Management coming to a deal that makes everyone happy at the Advertiser, which decreases our chances of seeing the videos from the Princess. Blog strikes and other measures could be coming…but when management is taking unpaid time off, it isn’t like they have lots of money to spread around.

  290. bighilofan2 January 15, 2009 6:46 am

  291. Garret January 15, 2009 6:49 am

I’m surprised that the ACC had the best record between the BCS conferences. For those who said last week that the BCS conference teams were afraid to play D-IAA teams because of App State’s win over Michigan…BCS conference teams went 50-0 against D-IAA teams in 2008.

The only BCS conference with a losing record against the non-BCS conferences was the Pac-10…the MWC saw to that in 2008.

While the SEC won its third straight national title, the ACC can claim more wins (17) against teams from the Bowl Championship Series than the SEC or any of the other major conference during the 2008 season.

The ACC went 17-14 against teams from the six BCS conferences and Notre Dame, despite a 2-6 bowl record in the group. The ’08 record is up from 13-16 in ’07 and 6-16 in ’06.

  292. bighilofan2 January 15, 2009 6:52 am
