UH's Davis arrested, suspended from team

UH cornerback JoPierre Davis was indefinitely suspended from the football team following his arrest this morning on numerous counts of  sexual assault and assault.

A UH spokesman said Davis was suspended for violating the school’s Code of Conduct.
However, he will remain on scholarship until an investigation is completed.

After 41 years at UH, secretary Margie Okimoto is retiring at the end of this month.
Okimoto has served as secretary to every UH athletic director since Paul Durham.
Her departure will leave assistant head football coach George Lumpkin as the dean of UH athletic department employees.

If things go according to plan, Jim Donovan and Greg McMackin will be traveling to Japan in two weeks on a goodwill/marketing tour.

curveball, some transitions we mark with pomp and circumstance, others we react to with great sadness. I believe that Kristin is finally freed from the physical limitations and sufferings that allowed her sweet character to emerge and shine brightly, if not briefly, on our lives.

    O SON OF THE SUPREME!

Why is it that 2 of the guys shown in the Princess’ video seem to not have their head on the baseball bat when they are spinning around? That seems like cheating when the other players were following the rules. I think one Warrior was shown with 1:10 left and another with 1:03 left that seem to be breaking the rules and getting a competitive advantage because of it.

In a time of tragic loss like yours, you must remember that all the love you gave her and all the love she had in her heart, will accompany her to the place where she is going. She is departed, but not gone.

    The author is unknown

But in the main office of Oahu Cemetery this poem caught my attention

At the time it was a poignant time in my life, too, similarly of what Curveball is experiencing with the loss of his wife

When a person is grieving… words of comfort, verbal and written, mean a lot…I know so well about this, wishfully I didn’t

But… it’s this poem I wanted to share with you today…and with especially Curveball.

TO THOSE I LOVE and THOSE WHO LOVE ME

When I am gone, release me, let me go

I have too many things to see and do,

You must not tie yourself to me with tears,

Be thankful for our many beautiful years,

I gave to you my love, you can only guess,

How much you gave to me in happiness.

But now is the time I travel alone.

I thank for the love you have shown.

So grieve a while for me, if grieve you must,

Then let your grief be comforted by trust.

Cherish the memories within your heart.

I won’t be far away for life goes on.

If you need me, call and I will come.

Though you can’t see or touch me, I will be near.

And if you listen within your heart you will hear,

all my love around you soft and clear.

And when you must come this way alone,

I’ll greet you with a smile and say,

    “Welcome Home!”

Article about how apparently Florida isn’t happy with their nonconference schedule in 2009 and may be interested in playing Utah or TCU…but Utah doesn’t appear to be interested in playing Florida.

Apparently there are some rumors floating around the Florida swamps that the Gators aren’t too happy with their non-conference schedule and might want to replace a game with a game that would get “national attention.”

The teams mentioned are Utah and TCU. According to the radio guys it would be a four-team deal involving Florida and the opponent it is currently scheduled to play and the school it would play in the revised schedule, and that school’s opponent.

First, let me say there aren’t any discussions going on between the schools according to Utah ticket manager Zack Lassiter who oversees the scheduling.

“We’re always looking at options, but right now our mindset is our 2009 schedule is full,” he said. “We’re focused on the 2010 and 2011 openings.”

  60. Garret February 12, 2009 11:49 am

SMU really must have had a discipline problem in the past. JJ has a “3 strikes” rule and just pulled scholarships from 9 players who kept missing classes and/or team activities. At least they arranged scholarships at other schools for those players…

Nine SMU football players have been notified that their athletic scholarships will not be renewed for the 2009 season and that they they no longer a part of the program.

“A few student-athletes failed to adhere to our department policies and/or team rules, and because of that, they are no longer part of our program,” Jones said. “We are sensitive to the fact that these decisions impact people’s lives, and with that in mind, we have made arrangements for these student-athletes for scholarships at other institutions should they wish to continue their education and football careers. We wish these young men the best in their future endeavors.”

    room for thought?…

perhaps the person(s) who does the bio’s for the football team could spend just a little more time and include 40 times, bench results, verticals.

    a little personal quotation from each player;
    what attracted you to hawaii?
what do you love about hawaii?
what would your teammates say about you?

a bit more about their families or at least the names of their siblings.

i think that admin needs to realize that 1000’s of fans and potential recruits view the bio’s. as such make it of fan and recruit interest. it could be another great selling point for the university that they should take advantage of.

    what you think?

Gotta remember they have update bios for over 500 athletes (M & F) and the coaching staff as well..

    Homey,

Now that’s just uncalled for! tsk tsk tsk…

BTW I saw that door hanger pull up thing at Sports Authority on Ward today.

Looks like and feels like it is worth 19 monthly payments of $0.50.

  104. Kazz February 12, 2009 3:09 pm

    RE: UH student athlete profiles.

Seriously though. Wouldn’t it be funny if there is one photo and profile of someone that isn’t even on the team or part of it on each roster page of all 19 sports programs????

Imagine all the UH football profiles and at the end is a photo of Chawan with his bright jacket on yelling at a basketball game.

I can just see all the reactions and confusion on all the faces of the people checking it out!

    C’MON!! THAT’S FUNNY!

WTF man, why bring unwanted attention to yourself in this kind of negative way? Do you have Tyler Graunke/Keenan Jones syndrome when knowing you have the golden oppurtunity to be named a starter and yet do something idiotic. Granted details are not given and no one knows what has happened yet, but regardless being highlighted on a negative subject is just stupid! C’mon dude don’t ruin your Senior Year!

Just noticed that the Travel Channel (58 or 325 digital) has a show at 8:00 pm — Great Cruises: Nowegian: the Pearl

Haven’t seen it yet but I surmise it is the Norwegian Pearl, one of the newer (but not newest) cruise ships. Might be a good overview of inexpensive modern “free-style” cruising and the activities aboard.

  144. Garret February 12, 2009 8:01 pm

We’ve talked about how early scholarship commits for football have become more and more common lately, but I didn’t realize that they increased 500% for BCS schools between June 2002 and June 2007. This writer seems to agree that Mack Brown at Texas was the one to really get the early offers and commits to spread around the country.

We saw this coming a few years ago, and it has gained steam every recruiting season. If you compare the commitments to the “Big Six” schools from June 2002 to June 2007, they were up a whopping 500 percent.

The reason for this trend is Texas. Coach Mack Brown’s recruiting strategies have altered recruiting as we know it. The Longhorns’ staff identify who they want, offer early and get a bulk of their recruiting done each year by the May evaluation period. Getting ahead so quickly affords them time to jump on the next year’s crop of players.

Big 12 rivals countered Texas by doing the same. Then it spread throughout the country.

  145. Garret February 12, 2009 8:03 pm

It is amazing that as of a few days ago there were already 76 commits, and these guys are generally the top recruits that schools are going after first. If you are wondering why Texas got 10 commits during that 3-day period, they had their first Junior Day of this year. Their next Junior day in during the last weekend of this month.

Look at this year. National Signing Day was a week ago, yet 45 teams already have a combined 76 commitments from 2010 prospects. Texas leads the way with 10, and those came in a three-day span from Feb. 7-9.

  146. Garret February 12, 2009 8:06 pm

Talking with Momo today, he seemed okay but he definitely was affected by this loss. Mr. Morita was the youngest in his group of buddies, and the one who he went to Vegas with and could always rely on. Sad day.

    SteveM,

My family (my parents, my sister’s family, Lori, Faith, and me) did that 7-day inside passage cruise on NCL when Faith was just 2 months old, and we had a great time! I think we were on the Norwegian Sun in September 2003.

We loved NCL’s freestyle dining and the activities, but we actually like Carnival better because of their kids program…drop them off anytime between early morning and 9 or 10pm and they had fun activities all day and night to do. The kids kept asking to go to the kid’s area (Camp Carnival) more and Lori and I loved how the casino and shows were so convenient to go to from where we dropped them off. I can’t believe that Camp Carnival was free, since each kid only cost us $20 (plus port fees and taxes) for the 5-day cruise and they got to keep the beach bag and t-shirt they did art projects on.

  156. Garret February 12, 2009 8:26 pm

    Stretch,

Thank you for posting that news about Davis. That is really disturbing, especially since one incident was during the season (which could have been distracting to the team if they knew about it) and the other was during recruiting season (if I remember correctly Davis was involved with recruiting for UH).

There is a lot that we don’t know right now, so I’m going to hope that Davis is innocent of the charges. I don’t understand why they would wait so long before the arrest…unless the woman didn’t contact police until recently.
