Managing the Warriors

Fetaiagogo “John” Fonoti said he will be helping the Warriors as a student manager. The work  will pay for his tuition. Fonoti is on track to earn a bachelor’s degree this academic year.

Fonoti probably had the potential to pursue pro-football opportunities. But he skipped UH’s Pro Day in April to work. He said his primary goal now is to earn a degree.

One of the most valuable members of the Warriors is manager Kyle Kamau, whose father and grandfather were NFL managers. Kamau helps in all phases of practices and, before the formation of scout teams yesterday, served as the scout quarterback in several drills. He was encouraged to try out as a player last year. Later, he did the math: walk-on as a player, full ride as a manager. He rivals Laupepa Letuli and David Graves as the team’s most talented muscian.

Sean Branick, a student manager last year, has moved back to Ohio.

Good practice today, featuring one-on-ones between linmen. Marcus Malepeai looked good as a pass-rusher. Siaki Cravens is really coming on, too.

The Warriors also worked extensively on kick returns and kickoffs. With the new no-wedge rule, those units will be dominated by faster and more athletic players. Among those who have excelled, according to the coaches, are Sterling Jackson and Darryl McBride.

After yesterday’s practice, quarterbacks Bryant Moniz and Cayman Shutter took a much-needed rest.

This is Shutter’s old-school helmet (that’s a Ninja Turtle sticker on the side):

    – Cable wasn’t ready to commit to Colt Brennan as third quarterback in hopes that Charlie Frye will be available. Frye went through some footwork drills with the quarterbacks but didn’t actually throw the ball.

    colt brennan briefs

and i don’t mean his underwear. check this blog out by raider fans and apparently one or two of them were/are at the raider practice. seems like the coltster is being given a lot of time on the practice field.

from the reports he is opening some eyes “ala colt style” with his accuracy and deep tosses.

go here and “control ‘f’…then type in brennan” then hit next to pick up the colt only stuff.

  73. WarriorMojo August 10, 2010 11:09 am

It’s a GOOD thing (or *good* thing ala Garret) that Cable wasn’t in the loop regarding Colt because that means Al Davis is guiding this. As Raider fans know, Davis is famous/notorious for making personnel decisions without any input from or notice to his coaching staff. If Al Davis says play him, Cable will play him.

I’ve always thought that if Colt were to make it in the NFL, it wouldn’t be following in the steps of the Favres or McNabbs or Elways with the cannon arms. If anything, he is a Kenny Stabler clone. Stabler didn’t have great arm strength and some of his passes seemed to tumble crossways through the air forever and ever. BUT, he was incredibly, incredibly accurate and when the ball did come down, it was usually in the hands of a Raider receiver. Moreover, he was a team leader and was the best two minute drill QB ever in my book. As we all know, Colt has that same accuracy and leadership quality. He also has a better arm than Stabler did. I’m hoping this is what Al Davis is seeing as well. Please let it be so.

  74. al August 10, 2010 11:15 am

  88. WarriorMojo August 10, 2010 12:33 pm

    http://www.ibabuzz.com/oaklandraiders/2010/08/10/raiders-news-notes-p-m-link/

    – Granted it’s easy to get carried away with seeing a few pinpoint passes after the way the passing game has gone on the Redwood Middle School field the past few years, and Colt Brennan’s chances of making the Raiders probably aren’t good.

But the guy has a knack for completions, having made virtually every throw imaginable in college at Hawaii.

Any thoughts that Brennan couldn’t throw a deep ball were dispelled by a sideline streak to Todd Watkins that was as pretty as any pass by any quarterback all training camp.

The ball traveled 40 to 50 yards in the air, and hit Watkins in stride with Stanford Routt helpless to do anything about it.

“He does a pretty good job of being able to put it on receivers and lead ‘em, and put it up over the top,’’ Cable said. “He has a knack for some of those things.’’

“I’ve played football since the fourth grade,’’ Brennan said. “You put me on a football field, there’s nothing uncomfortable about it.’’

With Charlie Frye out with a sore right wrist, Brennan will be the Raiders’ third quarterback against Dallas.

“I think what he’s done is put himself in the game,” Cable said. “He’s got it to a point where we feel like he can go in and hand it off and he’s got a handful of throws he can make and understand.”

  89. WarriorMojo August 10, 2010 12:35 pm

Detail: In the past, the Chargers have imposed blackouts of their telecasts (not sure why that applies beyond the home market). Question: Is the game being shown on the “NFL” channel? I also was told that Oceanic cannot go to Time Warner and ask for a different feed, but this seems just weird. On a side note, sounds like the “sports pak” is getting very popular. 😉

3:30 PM NFL PRESEASON GAME: OAK vs. DAL 2010 NFL Preseason Game: Oakland Raiders vs. Dallas Cowboys

A-House – got the email. Thanks!

Finally, I just received a flyer via email for the annual UH Athetics Golf Tournament to be held here in L.A. September 8. JD will be there. NOW, are there any LoCal bloggers/lurkers that would like to participate? If so, I’d like to enter the LoCal Tsaikos as a team. Since I’m not on the blog very often, email me at rich2176 at that yahoo place. Need to register by August 19th.

Schools tend to run the traditional school year so two weeks for Winter Break. Lots of time to run home for some of Mom’s home cooking and, of course, a bunch of spoiling by that old task master, Dad.

I wonder how they handle snowdays?

Have we had an offensive line this big before? Hopefully they are also mobile and have good feet and balance.

    T: Letuli – 6’4 325 lbs

    G: Leonard – 6’5 310 lbs

    C: Tiwanak – 6’1 300 lbs

    G: Thomas – 6’6 305 lbs

    T: Hansen – 6’4 305 lbs.

O-line in the Mark Nua days must have been big also.

  133. Ipu Man August 10, 2010 3:08 pm

As I googled trying to find the biggest UH football player I found this:

1909 – The College of Hawaii “Fighting Deans” played and won its first game against McKinley High School by a score of 95–5 at Punahou School.

1920 – The College of Hawaii becomes the University of Hawaiʻi and the football team plays its first intercollegiate game against Nevada, losing 14–0 on Christmas Day.

1922 – Hawaii defeats its first collegiate opponent, beating Pomona 25–6 on Christmas Day.

1923 – A rainbow appears over Moiliili Field after Hawaii upsets Oregon State, 7–0. Local reporters begin calling UH athletic teams the “Rainbows.”

  134. Ipu Man August 10, 2010 3:11 pm

    And in…

1924–25 – The Rainbows, under the guidance of coach Otto Klum, complete back-to-back undefeated seasons…

The Rainbows outscore their opponents 606–29 in 18 games. Among the schools defeated during this time are Colorado, Colorado State and Washington State.

  135. madeinhawaii August 10, 2010 3:13 pm

    oh yeah…

“23”…. A rainbow appears over Moilili Field….. how magic is THAT number, eh?

  136. Ipu Man August 10, 2010 3:19 pm

Mark Nua from New Zealand was 6′ 7″.

At 12 Mark was the Auckland shot put and discus Champion. At age 14 he was the New Zealand Champion and went on to become the Australasian shot put champion.

Mark played with the University of Hawaii Warriors from 1984 to 1988 when he graduated with a BA in Sociology. Then the giant Kiwi offensive lineman was signed by the Detroit Lions (1990-1992) and subsequently played with the San Diego Chargers (1992-1994).

  137. Ipu Man August 10, 2010 3:24 pm

In 1997 on his return to New Zealand Mark Nua moved into TV and film with roles in “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted”, “Crooked Earth” and “Spooked”.

Mark’s story is full of dreams, setbacks, humour and most of all about a young man who’s life was changed overnight thrust into the role of a sporting celebrity.

He themes his talks around something his first coach, in Hawaii, Dick Tommy told him “The Will to Win is the Will to Prepare”

    Enuf said…bye.

  139. BigIslandkurt August 10, 2010 3:32 pm

Actually, the line in Mark Nua’s days was actually pretty small compared to today’s standards. Mark Nua was an anomaly at the time…..a “giant” if you will. Nowadays, some schools be lining players in all 5 positions with Nua-like proportions.

Fetaiagogo Fonoti was definitely good enough to be on soneome’s pre-season roster. Given the right circumstances, he probably could have made someone’s team. But of course, in the long run, the degree will payoff more for he and his family.

    Whasup Warriors!

    CSB,

I can only speculate why Coach Petersen is banning twitter with his players. Since we all know how people like to talk trash prior to game day, the ban is probably an attempt to prevent any Blount-Hout type altercations on the field. Can’t always control the ocassional player that says something stupid, but you can limit his options. Recall Idaho’s Don Verlin suspending Kashif Watson for his profanity laced twitter comment regarding him. That was funny.

  158. Stacy Kaneshiro August 10, 2010 4:35 pm

    Hey, Tsai’s readers.

Waianae will play Kahuku at 6 p.m. Saturday at Kahuku, the OIA said.

Waianae had its preseason game canceled when Nanakuli could not come up with enough players. Kahuku had an opening because a trip to Utah fell through.

So we end up with this great matchup to open the high school football season.

    http://www.raiders.com/news/article-1/Coach-Cable-Tuesday-Transcript/aa5b26f6-93c6-4fd6-a619-532af7b45abd

Q: What has Colt Brennan shown in the few days that he has been here?

Coach Cable: Well he is studying his rear end off. Paul [Hackett] is spending an incredible amount of time with him. I think what he has done is put himself in the game.

Q: Colt making as many throws as he has in college, does it make him more likely to come hit the field with a short amount of practice, and be able to complete passes in a game situation?

Coach Cable: I think that it helps him. I definitely think it helps him. As you said, he came out of a much different system then maybe the pro style; but the fact is he thrown a million footballs. He has a nice drop. If you watch him he does a pretty good job with being able to put it on receivers, and lead them. So he has a knack for some of those things.

    “He has a nice drop.”

Ooh, that’s nice. Remember one of the criticisms of Colt when he was drafted was that he — supposedly — didn’t know how to drop back since he played most snaps in the gun.

I guess I must be pretty far gone in the Cult of Colt because I NEED to see Thursday’s game. Liz, do you have Dish or Direct TV? How you liking it?

  172. WarriorMojo August 10, 2010 5:08 pm

I inquired with Oceanic about their Sports Pak, to make sure we’d catch the Army and Colorado UH games, and the rep assured me that the SP is included with the PPV season package until the December cutoff.

When I mentioned we had ordered the PPV season package, she said we weren’t listed as having ordered it, but they had been having issues with the system.

I had pushed the “purchase” button, but it came back and said I had already ordered it. It seemed strange, but I thought the order had gone through and everything was hunky-dory.

Anyone who thought their TV acted a little oddly when they purchased a UH season package should check with Oceanic about their order, or they might be unpleasantly surprised at gametime in September.

  199. whitey August 10, 2010 9:02 pm

Safe journey Allie and best wishes on your newest venture.

  200. gigi-hawaii August 10, 2010 9:03 pm

  201. Ipu Man August 10, 2010 9:16 pm

The neat thing about the Kamehameha Leilehua game was Tara Gabriel, the young lady football player kicking a bunch of extra points.

    RE: #195

Rawhide Curt — very good. Bring the lyrics to the next Karaoke Call.

Thanks to all the Tsai-kos and Tsai-kettes for the birthday wishes. Had a great day. Slept late, went to the beach for a while and then Mrs. SB treated me to a sunset dinner cruise. It was a very good day made even better by all the birthday wishes from my friends. Mahalo.

BTW, Kekoa ~ tutu is in retirement unless Homey wants to ‘borrow’ and dance again. I think it looked better on him than me 😀

And A-House ~ da dogs are asking you to not sing any more, it hurts their ears 😀

  205. al August 10, 2010 9:28 pm

  229. Slugger August 10, 2010 11:37 pm

    al,

We had lobster two ways today thanks to Uncle Walter winning a bowling pot. So delicious.

At practice, the guy who graduated from the UH nursing program remarked on how much larger our O-line looks this year compared to previous years. I sat and watched them, but I know nothing about what they are supposed to do, so I can’t comment.

ST is right about Darryl McBride.

  230. homey ℞ August 10, 2010 11:38 pm

    Beach anyone?

  231. Slugger August 10, 2010 11:39 pm

    I’m a tired buckaroo…off to bed.

    Practice tomorrow!!!

  233. al August 10, 2010 11:50 pm

    lobster?

  234. al August 10, 2010 11:54 pm

i hear mcbride might turn out to be a hidden gem on st and d.

people are also saying that sterling is silver as in quicksilver especially for a big guy.

i’ll bet malepeai is unleashing a year’s worth of waiting.

  235. homey ℞ August 11, 2010 12:00 am

Quicksilver as in the comic book hero or the element mercury?

Time for some shut-eye and get ready for an early wake-up and soak up some vitamin D.

    Goodnight world.

    per ST’s aticle …

coach Tormey said four first-year Warriors — Sterling Jackson, Darryl McBride, Siaki Cravens and John Hardy-Tuliau — have been impressive on the kickoff units.

“Those are four guys in the mix we didn’t have last year,” Tormey said. “They’re athletes, and we’re trying to put as many good athletes out there as we can.”

Also, one one scholarship might open up…

The Warriors are awaiting approval on a medical hardship that would open up a scholarship. Defensive ends Liko Satele and Kamalu Umu, center Bronson Tiwanak, and cornerback Kawika Ornellas are among key contributors who are not on scholarship

  238. Michigan Warrior August 11, 2010 1:44 am

    Happy birthday, Sailor Blue!

Best wishes and safe travels, Allie!

Dang it, Curt… now that song is stuck in my head, and probably will be for the next few days. Where’s my Rap Replinger album? I need to listen to something else!

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

al & Steve M: Frankie Laine classic! Do you remember “Ghost Riders in the Sky”? or “High Noon”?

Annoddah Dave — I remember Ghost Riders as an instrumental (played on my uncle’s record player), but not the lyrics as here…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwAPa0qHmLo

High Noon (Gary Cooper) was a little too adult in theme for my age …in 1952…

So, let us welcome Colt Brennan, the new Oakland Raider whose surname means “raven.”

Welcome to the team, as you bring wisdom and more talent and determination to the team.

Another amazing coincidence and finding is that in Chinese mythology, it is believed, according to a quote, that “when the sunlight hits their (the raven) glossy black feathers just right, they seem to turn to silver.?

From black to silver. Does that sound familiar?

  242. d1島 August 11, 2010 6:13 am

    Great Morning All!

Nice story about Pookela Ahmad and his Mom….new neighbors of Kekoa.

That new rule on KO’s might make for some interesting results! 😯

The sidelines might be pretty crowded at practice today…erryboddy behave!

    HiHo….
