Man in the middle?

During the 2-minute drill it appeared that … wait, is it possible? … yes, Blaze Soares was playing middle linebacker.
“I love it there,” Soares said.
Of course, it was part of a rotational experiment, and that Mana Lolotai and Jake Heun will be getting the bullk of the work there.
But, yet …

* * * * *

Greg McMackin has put together a bright-minded staff on defense. Newcomers Chris Tormey and Michael not only work well with the holdovers β€” Rich Miano, Cal Lee, George Lumpkin and Dave Aranda β€” but they have brought renewed energy to practices.
Keep an eye on Aranda, who is regarded as a rising star in the coaching ranks.

Yesterday’s moving day (from the dance studios) meant one thing: the rookie talent show. The closed-door show is usually a unifying event. Details are always hush-hush, but several years ago it was revealed that quarterback Timmy Chang had a recurring role as a certain blog host. I knew there was something I liked about Timmy.

Nice article on Don Weir in Midweek.

Weir had become volunteer president of the UH Letterwinners Club. A year later, he interviewed for the very important position as executive director of the UH football booster club Na Koa. He impressed the selection panel with his passion and enthusiasm.

β€œI started pounding on the table,” he recalls. β€œI said, β€˜This is my school, this is who I played for, and this is my job!.’”

Weir says Na Koa helps the football program out to the tune of about $1 million a year. β€œTicket sales pay for financial aid, like room, books and tuition,” he says. β€œNa Koa does the other stuff, like knee braces, summer school, coach’s cell phones, training table and help in (the travel process and logistics of) recruiting. Money is raised through memberships, fundraising events and sponsorships. We’re also starting our first endowments.”

  16. bighilofan2 August 20, 2009 7:07 am

There are rumors Billy Mays estate was approached by investors to use his likeness and voice over to endorse future products.

  27. Garret August 20, 2009 7:40 am

I hope that Sol is doing well in Buffalo’s camp. For those that are curious, here is the breakdown for undrafted rookie free agents:

Minimum salary for rookies on the active roster: $310,000 for the 2009 season
Minimum salary for players with 1 year of NFL service (Colt, Hawthorne, etc.): $385,000

Players on the practice squad make a lot less: $88,400 for the 2009 season.

Ronnie, games are scheduled here on the East Coast on ESPNUHD and start at midnite EST. So check the early evening.

UH Boise State on the same schedule starts about 5pm here so check around noon on Friday followed by Wash at Hawaii.

I also found the Sugar Bowl coming up but that was on a Fox College Sports channel.

    Pomai-

    # 36- So true dat! Blaze, like Brashton, is a force multiplier on defense because not only is their play so strong, but it will serve to jack the whole defense up. What’s exciting is that we may have few players like that spread out all over the defense. That’s one of the reasons why I think our defense will surprise, and also one of the reasons I believe we WILL be WAC champs.

  49. Da Punchbowl Kid August 20, 2009 8:57 am

…team talent show–I would like to see the “certain blog host” performance if it is a recurring role. Any video? πŸ˜†

  51. Mana August 20, 2009 8:59 am

Why is Dave Aranda a rising star in the coaching ranks? Because he is good with computers? Because he likes to read and is considered intelligent? The guy never played college football, and he has a very shy personality. I don’t know. He is too much of a serious, straight arrow. I don’t see him getting in the face of a player, as a coach may sometimes have to do, or handling the media, where he doesn’t like to talk. Just goes to show you that in the neanderthal world of football coaching, if a guy has intelligence, he can be anointed as a great coach.

  52. LizKauai August 20, 2009 9:08 am

I’m looking forward to meeting the coaches again – this time “in their elements” – next Wednesday for Heather’s Clinic.

As for their greatness- the proof will be in the performance.

    GO WARRIORS!

  53. Pride. August 20, 2009 9:12 am

  54. (Jesse) James August 20, 2009 9:21 am

Mana…not sure why he is considered a rising star as a coach and maybe he is, I’ll just take the wait and see attitude with that.

Although your point is well taken that perhaps only people who have played the game can truly coach the game…there are examples of people who never played football or played very sparingly but were very good coaches. They knew how to communicate to their players and get the best performance out of them that they possibly could, they were great tactitions who could game plan brilliantly, and they understood the intricacies of the game and had the brains to do it.

LOL…and not sure if the entire world of football is neanderthal….I played ball and also had brains…or at least I like to think I did….LMAO….

  59. Garret August 20, 2009 9:57 am

UH has a nice feature about the Warrior DBs.

β€œWith four or five players each at corner and safety, the competition’s been great,” secondary coach Rich Miano said. β€œIf you take a day off, then the other guy moves up. Competition makes people better and it’s going to really help us because if you have any set backs, then the next guy will step in and take your job.”

β€œOur toughest job is going to be finding out who the five are that will be starting and how many we’re going to rotate in there,” Miano adds. β€œWe feel good about our personnel, but it’s just a matter of finding out who’s going to start for us when we play Central Arkansas.”

  60. Garret August 20, 2009 9:59 am

    Ronnie,

Good point about Hawthorne. He would be considered a first-year player for salary purposes because he hasn’t accrued an NFL season of experience yet. To get an accrued year, a player has to spend 6 games on the active/inactive, reserved- injured or “physically unable to perform” lists.

  61. crusader08 August 20, 2009 10:01 am

There are former players that can’t coach at all.

Dave Aranda is a good teacher. You can see it at practice everyday.

  64. Derek August 20, 2009 10:08 am

    Some Questions:
    1) When will be see the latest depth chart?
    2) What’s the expectation of the punting this year? What is Dunnachie’s average yardage and hang time? In practice of course?
    3) What do you think about the special teams are? Long snapping? Place kicking and field goals? Punt returns? Kick-Off returns? Coverage?
Kick blocking? Who’s are the wedge busters…the Ulufale’s of the world?
    4) Where’s David Hafoka?
    5) Where’s Christian Vasconcellos?
    6) Are they working on the hurry up or no huddle offense?
    7) Can Alexander call his own plays sometimes? Can he audible?
    8) What are the major changes to the rules?

  65. Pride. August 20, 2009 10:21 am

Charlie Weis, head coach for Notre Dame, for one. Paul Johnson, head coach for Georgia Tech, for another. David Cutcliffe- Duke Mike Leach- Texas Tech George O’ Leary-UCF Mark Mangino-Kansas

  68. Pride. August 20, 2009 10:27 am

I thought on George O’Leary’s resume, it said that he played in the NFL.

  69. Maynard G. Krebs August 20, 2009 10:30 am

HD football is well and good but I was watching one of Oldie’s disc (Miami of Ohio) and you get so much into the game that you sort of forget that it is not in HD.

LTUHF: great seeing you posting again. Any new trips planned?

  70. Pride. August 20, 2009 10:39 am

    Stretch,

Good thing that KK was only the VP and not actually a teacher. I can’t see him teaching a bunch of elementary school kids. Imagine him teaching history? “Wow back in the day there was this civil war, and there was the north and the south, wait das not right. okay no, the civil war was with the french…or maybe da brithish. Okay, but all I remember is dat somebody went trow da coffee in da ocean. And den da guy went ride his horse tru da town and was yelling, “da spanish is coming”. And den afta dat wentget a bucnh of guys togeda foa sign dis document called da declairance of inspiration, foa inspire all of us foa be one good and betta nation. PRIDE:

Sorry, but O’Leary was the fellow that Notre Dame released as head coach after a couple of days there as head coach for falsifying his resume – he claimed a MA from a non-existent school and that he lettered three years in football at U New Hampshire which UNH denied. He did well in his coaching career and got up into the pro-ranks as a coach but not as a player.

Pride – I contributed but did you have to cut your hair? Inquiring minds want to know …

I just checked with the ticket office. Women’s season volleyball tickets are still available; however, you need to purchase them at the box office or over the phone because the individual tickets have gone on line and there is no way to know that a particular seat has been sold until the close of each business day with respect to on-line sales. There is a service charge to pay by phone. If you’d like, I can pick them up for you as I have to go get ours as well.

I am so sorry to hear about the auto accident. Even though it’s almost two years since my 1970 VW was broadsided by a Hummer on the passenger side, I’m still trying to deal with the aftermath – like negotiating stairs. Three out of four limbs took a hit.

A quick update to the car break-in two weeks ago at the Iwilei Costco parking lot. I filed a complaint with corporate headquarters in Seattle about the decision not to hire a security service or have security on staff. I was called yesterday and told that I would be reimbursed for the door repair and that the company has revisited the issue and has put out a Request For Bids to security firms. Any bloggers here work for a security company and would like to put in a bid?

They had assumed that given the number of people coming & going in the parking lot throughout the day, this would discourage criminal behavior.

    Re: #64

Q2: I can offer you an opinion of what I saw and what I clocked on my wristwatch for Alex D’s punts at yesterday afternoon’s practice on Ching field.

Average of about 35 – 40 punts were falling in the 50-60 yard range consistently. Hang time was between 4 to 5 seconds!

Q3: Longest field goal attempt was a 55 yarder that hit the crossbar. Everything inside of that max range seemed like a low trajectory, but since it was against the wind, it cuts the resistance. Overall, not impressed with our field goal kicker.

Return men: Most notable was Greg Salas. Even with his surehanded receptions, he found it difficult to handle those sky high punts, and dropped a few.

Same as place kicking. Adequate but nothing to excite the crowd.

Everything else was staged, so nothing on punt/kick-off coverage to comment on at this time.

  91. Garret August 20, 2009 11:44 am

The New York Times has BSU as the #17 team in the country. Some tidbits from the long article:

The Boise State defense, so strong last fall, has some holes to fill in its front seven. These losses begin on the interior of its defensive line, where both of last year’s starters, tackles Sean Bingham and Joe Bozikovich, are lost to graduation.

Linebacker also took a hit due to graduation, losing Tim Brady and Kyle Gingg on the outside and Dallas Dobbs in the middle.

This secondary is very, very good. Good enough, in fact, to play with any team in the country.

But here’s a scary thought: the B.S.U. two-deep heading into the season will feature only two seniors. That means of the top 44 players on the Boise State roster, only two are seniors. Furthermore, that signals two things: one, though B.S.U. may be unable to beat Oregon on the opening Thursday of the season, it will undoubtedly get better and better as the season progresses; and two, this team is a national championship contender in 2010.

    Re: Hooters Roulette

Careful consideration is the key…never let the dealer rush you into placing your bet. Take your time…it’s like working the clock during a 2 minute drill.

I can see by your course of instruction that you are using the *Color Blind* methodology. Interesting. It can be compared to assigning the orange ‘target’ jersey to a QB, low risk, high impact if the DE is color challenged.

Odd or Even? another fascinating strategy. Easy money! Odd or even numbers are usually used with identifying the gaps in the Oline. Here is where you can choose one for good luck, and play it!

Included in *outside* bets are my real secrets to the inner game and the inside bets. Those secrets I will reveal in my $39.95 three page brochure on Wheels & Deals.

The question was not directed to me, but I know Chauncey Makainai is very highly thought of by people who understand and value good blocking. Some guys enter a program and stagnate, others are movers and shakers and continually get better. Part of the excitement about Chauncey is how good he’ll become. He has a great attitude. He’s someone to watch.

    I hope that Mel Purcell’s injury isn’t that bad…

Third-year defensive lineman Melila Purcell, the Browns sixth-round pick in 2007, was carted off the field at the end of practice with a left leg or foot injury that appeared serious. It happened on a touchdown run on one of the final plays of practice. He grabbed his leg and then slumped over in pain. The trainers immediately removed his shoe, brought the cart over and helped him on it. He couldn’t put any weight on the leg. No details were provided after the session.

  133. Garret August 20, 2009 6:05 pm

Looks like Bess might not be returning punts this season. Miami is seeing if NMSU’s Chris Williams can take over as the kick and punt returner for them.

His eight returns in Monday’s exhibition opener against Jacksonville convinced Sparano to let Williams handle all of the return duties again Saturday night when Carolina visits Land Shark Stadium. He averaged less than a yard on four punt returns, although one 26-yard return was nullified by a penalty. He averaged 31.8 yards on four kick returns.

“What I saw was a guy that changed field position drastically,” Sparano said. “For him to have a real chance to make this team, a large part of it’s going to be contingent upon what he does back there.”

Last year, Ted Ginn Jr. handled kick returns and Davone Bess the punt returns, but both are full-time receivers.

“If they like scoring down there in Miami, they might look at keeping that guy,” joked famed offensive innovator Hal Mumme, who coached Williams with the Aggies.

  134. Ralph August 20, 2009 6:12 pm

Had an extended lunch earlier today so I headed out to the Manoa Bookstore to see what new UA gear they’ve got and it’s not much new products.

***New #’s for the jerseys are #12 and #1. I swore the girl on the phone told me #53 is available but I only saw #s 12 and 1.***

There is a new Hawaii Football UA hoodie in athletic grey with green trim on the sleeves and on the neck… $85.00 though… Yeah… maybe when it get’s “colder”… πŸ™„

I did pick up a new UA shirt with “HAWAII” in an arch layout on the front and a new pair of UA basketball-style shorts. It’s a nice dark DARK forest green with a black strip running down the sides and the UH “H” on the bottom of the leg and the UA logo on the other leg.

What was really nice to see was the amount of kids there that were “eating up” the UH logo gear and of course their parents (of some) whipping out the credit cards… πŸ˜†

Also got a chance to finally check out the downtown store in Fort Street Mall and it’s a nice larger store, but they too need to stock up on new gear.

Apparently the influx of Oakley polos, hats, and button shirts are due to the Warrior Golf Team being outfitted by Oakley.

Again… the UH Rainbowtique website is in DESPERATE need of timely updates.

  154. A-House August 20, 2009 7:02 pm

Very few, if any, visiting teams from the mainland, especially from the BCS conferences, play hard and clean.

They’re mantra is play dirty and sho’um how its supposed to be playing the “big boys” – the EGO factor always runs away and when they lose, first thing is “beef” cause they know that the mainland news outlets will always blame UH for starting a fight and continue/build on a stigma created by the media and very few, if any, try to find the instigator(s) to correctly report the facts on the mainland.

I suppose it’s very easy to talk it up on the continent because there is no one to challenge their remarks and spoken often and long enough it will be accepted/remembered by the populace. Ever hear a ESPN sports caster/analyst say, “no, that’s not waht happened, this is what I saw”? I have not! A teacher at McKinley High School said, “Human nature sucks!!”

  155. Slugger August 20, 2009 7:11 pm

    BHF2,

Mahalo for taking care of the bike collection! (Next time, use an Excel spreadsheet. I’ll send you an example of what I used for an NPR donation tracking. :))

I think you should ask the Tsaikos who sent the cash if they’d like to donate it to Doris. That would be a good use of the funds that aren’t in checks written to Na Koa. I’d go w/ sending Doris the cash to help her w/ expenses in kokua of player placement.

I’m baaaack from Hilo-Holualoa-Kona-Hilo jaunt. Fun to see old friends & hanging w/ my sis & nephew at UH-Hilo. Hope he makes the baseball team.

  163. Garret August 20, 2009 8:17 pm

The Washington Examiner points out that the Redskins do not have a great backup OL, but then completely downgrades Colt’s QB evaluation anyway. That is sad…but I’m guessing that they have some indication from Zorn that Colt isn’t going to have a chance to battle for the #2 QB spot. Zorn actually said it to the Washington media, so Colt’s hope for the #2 spot this season is gone I guess.

Most disappointing Β» The offensive line depth. It was a major problem before camp; it’s a major problem as they enter the final three preseason games. It’ll be an issue once the season begins.

Most disappointing battle Β» No. 2 quarterback. There is no race. Todd Collins is the backup to Jason Campbell and Colt Brennan is No. 3. After last year’s splash, Brennan now resembles any other late-round, second-year quarterback.

Northern Michigan University gives laptops to all of its students and now it is providing them with free mobile WiMAX service (the next generation of what Clearwire uses in Hawaii). They said that they needed to go from WiFi to WiMAX because their school is in a rural area and commuter students and staff may live several miles away from campus…so, students and staff get free computers and internet service in their homes!

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency will install 360 new bus stops powered by solar panels that will power WiFi routers and digital information panels. plus will generate an estimated 43,000 kW-hours per year of unused energy that will be sent to the city’s grid. The best part is that Clear Channel will pay the $30,000 cost per bus step because they will get to sell ad space on the bus stops–so, the city gets WiFi everywhere, the bus stops generate power instead of take power, and the taxpayers don’t have to pay anything.

Kekoa, thanx for the updates. Now I’m getting worried, except for the punter. If we can’t win the special teams battle, it doesn’t bode well and trying to win would be very tough. Last year, special teams were not good. And that’s being kind.

  172. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 20, 2009 8:24 pm

Timmy Chang had time in the pocket during this game.

  173. Ralph August 20, 2009 8:27 pm

the field looks terrible with all the trash, Hawaii is the only stadium in all sports that I see so much paper debris.

  174. koakane™ August 20, 2009 8:28 pm

thanks to pride and stretch for clarifying coaching it is good to know both of you are now starting to understand the game.

like some movie I saw that once stated “its the hard that makes it great or every one like engineers or boat movers could do it”. oh wait yea pride you tried coaching plus right on assessment of some of the classes you took to pass high school.

  175. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 20, 2009 8:35 pm

Special teams as a whole (excluding individual concepts) and the offensive line will be improved from last season.

To what degree? I’m not sure.

  176. Kazz (blkberry_storm) August 20, 2009 8:39 pm

    Ralph,

Forget the paper on the field. Did you see the kind of protection Timmy Chang had from his offensive line?

Nalani, Osaka is the best place to eat Fugu. Zuboraya is a large chain that specializes in Fugu, so it is very safe. Gotta have the Fugu sashimi and the hotpot with some sake. HMMMMM!

  178. Nalani August 20, 2009 8:42 pm

OL will be improved this yer….i think we’ll also see a nice RB core this year too!

not that we’ll run all that much, but remembering the undefeated season, it was the option to run in games that the passing game wasn’t working that gave us some of our crucial wins.

I saw this same list on Wikipedia and there is a glaring omission – Dick Tomey!

Are there any plans for Na Wahine to get together either before or after next week’s football clinic?

Re the extra money donated so far – I know that our check is not recorded so there are probably at least half a dozen other checks not recorded as well. We made our check payable to Na Koa and want it to go to them.

Why not give it all to Na Koa and let them buy another bike? Also, I was toold that the bicycle(s) will be available to other student athletes after the football season ends. Is that true?

  182. lava August 20, 2009 9:38 pm

I thought Bess only played the first quarter of the Dolphins game. Williams played poorly. He fielded one punt inside the 10, and then ran backward only to be tackled inside the 5. Another punt he dropped, and managed to retrieve for no gain. Maybe the coach sees some speed that COULD change the field position, but that only works if he has excellent hands and exercises good judgment. Since you know Bess is good to catch the punts, it makes sense to dump all the duties on Williams for the next game.

I think the story is not so much about Bess as it is Williams; whether or not he makes the team depends on his contributions to the special teams.

  190. Kekoa August 20, 2009 11:02 pm

Tks C_C ~ I missed RK’s show while watching UH fb on ESPN. Did you see my post yesterday about your band of brothers?

What was really funny was watching one of our hardworking UH QB’s throwing football around the perimeter of the band. He would stand on about the 10 yard line and then heave it as far as he could from the woodwind section…all the way over to the drum line crew. Then, walk over and pick up the ball and throw it somewhere else. Where are the receivers? Nobody wants to put in any extra effort, or what?

Yes Al, it does. You have to see this kid put ’em up time after time! Booming kicks that brought down the Manoa mist! Never saw him shank one, or kick one shorter then 40 yds.

I remember watching Ray Guy kick warmups for the Pro Bowl one year. Very similar loft and distance, but Ray wasn’t as consistent.

    A House,
your #154. so true! “human nature sucks.”
reminds me of my favorite movie scene of all time: Pulp Fiction, Samuel L. Jackson pointing the gun at the restaurant robber’s head and mumblin the passage from the bible, wonderin aloud whether it meant that he, when he is holdin the gun at da guy’s head, meant he was his brother’s keeper or if he was the shepherd, or if he was the tyranny.

I say UH coach da boys so dat when da game starts, da mantra is “shoot his @$$!” πŸ˜†

cannot cry over things you cannot change.
season ending surgeries is one example.

but doing the little things now, scripting the medical reports, getting the records, documentation with an eye to the future, helps getting the NCAA medical hardship extension.

nothing like being the first out of the gate.

Good luck on having successful rehab to Mr. Christian, Mr. Paclebar and Mr. Satele?

good writing. adds to ST’s fire.

  205. Garret August 21, 2009 4:37 am

    lava,

I believe that you are correct about Bess playing just the first quarter, because I think that the first team offense only played the first quarter.

If Chris Williams makes the team, he’ll return all punts and kicks. That would take the job from Bess, which might not be bad because Bess will probably be a starting WR and will be busy there.

  206. royal crown August 21, 2009 4:40 am

    kekoa,

I absorbed every point you said about me.

It’s good to see you’re having your day in the sun, as by belittling me it made you, I guess, a bigger person.

You know the points you make reflects more on you as being a wounded animal than anything else.

So go ahead and continue your sinister ways and denouncing all my imperfections, like not contributing to the bike fund, writing story book posts, misspelling words and whatever other faults you can find in me because you have a need to feed your ego.

In retrospect, what you did to me, you also did to wf2. But wf2 schooled you, and I’m guessing you haven’t recovered from the sting, especially how he made you look like a fool.

In both cases, it’s true, you threw the first volley. And your dwindling band of followers can’t see this.

  207. Garret August 21, 2009 4:42 am

    lava,

One thing I forgot to add–Chris Williams actually had a *worse* start that what you described. The first punt he returned he fumbled! The second punt he returned he fielded inside the 10 and ran backwards…getting tackled at the 1! The first team offense played just a few drives and he made them start at the 1 on one of those drives. Those were his first two NFL punt returns…

I remember when Chad Owens had 2 bad punt returns he was cut. Miami’s coaches showed a *lot* more patience and actually allowed him to continue to return all the kicks and punts in the game. He did well after that horrible start and will get a real chance to win the kick and punt return jobs to make Miami’s roster. If Williams had coaches like Chad had he wouldn’t have gotten a chance to redeem himself and Williams would already be cut.

    BHF2 – will e-mail you Don Weir’s phone numbers.

Al, is the Tuesday’s Cattle Call a buffet, order off the menu ala carte, or family-style where everyone splits the check? What’s the average tab? Back when DrDoc worked at Kuhio Park Terrace, we often ate take-out from Golden Coin in Kalihi, but I can’t remember sit-down service. Have a 10 am appointment in Kapolei and 2 pm appointment in town so I’ll try to stop off.
