Monday's practice

For the first spring practice with the players in shoulder pads:

• This was the starting offense:

Left wideout — Darius Bright

Left slotback — Allen Sampson

Left tackle — Clayton Laurel

Left guard — Brett Leonard

Center — Matagisila Lefiti

Right guard — Chauncy Winchester-Makainai

Right tackle — Levi Legay

Right slotback — Terence Bell

Right wideout — Royce Pollard

Quarterback — Bryant Moniz

Running back — Sterling Jackson/Joey Iosefa

• On defense, the No. 1 team was:

Left end — Liko Satele

Left tackle — Vaughn Meatoga

Right tackle  — Kaniela Tuipulotu

Right end — Paipai Falemalu

Outside linebacker — Art Laurel

Middle linebacker — George Daily-Lyles

Outside linebacker — Aaron Brown

Left cornerback — Tank Hopkins

Free safety — Kenny Estes

Strong safety — Richard Torres

Right cornerback — John Hardy-Tuliau

Nickelback — Kamalani Alo

(Of course, Corey Paredes is a starter, but he will not participate in contact drills while recovering from shoulder surgery.)

* * * * *

Art Laurel is being used as an “elephant” —  a pass-rushing linebacker — and in team drills, he went up against his brother, Clayton Laurel, a few times. “I won,” Clayton Laurel said.

* * * * *

Aaron Brown had two interceptions, both off deflected passes, in the team drills. “It starts right here,” Brown declared.

* * * * *

David Graves models Miah Ostrowski’s basketball shirt. Ostrowski already has distributed his original run of 125 shirts. He is printing up new orders.

miah

The verse on the shirt is from Philippians 4:13 (“I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.”)

And a very happy birthday to Mrs. D-1 Shima.

Sounds good when you can hear the crackle in the sky. It’ll seperate the men from the boys. Hope the offensive line shapes up quickly, loads of potential but many unknowns and unproven guys except for Brett and Sila… hope they get it together quickly…

  7. Pauoa Boy March 14, 2011 7:18 am

Pertaining to yesterdays topic… I think the fact of just getting away from your comforts and being able to just focus on what you need to do is why the boys choose to go elsewhere. I mean we may have all the things available but again too many outside influences to get off track and not stay disciplined.

seems like the redshirt freshmen will have to grow up fast as depth and numbers are a problem this year. i thought for sure that they would address that with one or two jc olinemen.

You don’t pump yourself with Vitamins C and Zinc and B until you feel sick… it’s the sense of urgency that get’s you going. I suppose something of the same applies for pro Day. To a young man, 5 years seems like a long time when you are just coming out of high school. The athlete always thinks he has more than enough time to work on it…after all, it represents more than 1/4 of his life when he’s only 17. But then, time passes so quickly with the full schedule they have with school and before they realize it?… Pro Day.

On the flip side of the coin, there is the fact that the part of the brain that controls “judgement” is impaired for a year or two during early adulthood (18-21).

  20. al March 14, 2011 8:56 am

i’ll refer the receiving corps as the jungle for now. four openings; one returnee starter, a whole bunch of guys with experience from last year, and then five new recruits file in by june/july we hope if not sooner. several are jc guys so their time clocks are short.

it will be nutz come fall camp to see who ends up with the precious playing time in september.

it will be a jungle. rolo, lelie, mouse, will have their hands full teaching and evaluating.

I would agree with ST that the spring will be crucial for the OL in gaining a step over others for PT in 2011. Mainly bc there are no incoming JUCOs this fall as is the case in the secondary and other positions. The spring audition represents the competitive candidate field in toto. Add to that, Hansen’s uncertain status with the NCAA and it opens up still another possibility due to attrition. We are looking at a brand new OL.

Basically, we have a slew of untested 4-5 year apprentices and a group of promising youngsters who will audition for starting roles. OL coach Gordie Shaw has his work cut out for him and given the talent pool, it wll be a delightful challenge.

    Shaw is under the gun.

Warriors will face Colorado and WASH in the first two weeks of Sept.

We have Bryant Moniz returning at QB for his 3rd year as starter….but, it will mean nadas if our OL turns out to be a disastor and allows sacks en masse. No time to learn on gametime curves. Warrior hogs must be ready!

  34. Derek March 14, 2011 10:14 am

How big is McBride now? Not a good thing when Laurel, Winchester-Makainai, and Legay have hardly played in actual games. They have to grow up real fast. I think the receivers and DBs are in much better shape. Pollard is a returning starter. Bright looks to be a good one. Ostroski and Terrance Bell can play. And we’ve got Stutz and Sampson, and some others looking for playing time. I think we’ll be okay there. With Torres, Estes, Hardy-Tuliau, and Hopkins we’ve got 4 who can play. Add Edwards and Leslie in the fall, plus we’ve got Dee Maggitt, Gomes, Ornellas, etc. so I’m thinking Miano has a pretty good group back there. The fact that we moved McBride to linebacker means the deep end is in better shape with the guys we have. But, yeah, the offensive line is the key. If we can’t protect our QB it is not good. Hope Hansen can get clearance to resume practicing and playing.

  35. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2011 10:29 am

    mcBride is 207

  36. hawaiiansun March 14, 2011 10:34 am

Aranda wants speed on the perimeter, hence the McBride move to olb.

Fans noticed what an Aaron Brown brings to the game at OLB. He has become a trend setter for this D.

We are loaded in the middle-trenches and should be solid, so, Aranda is protecting his flank and applying pressure on the edge. I wont be as confident in our secondary until the two much heralded secondary transfers arrive in Hawai’i this summer. Indeed, should we have capable corners and fast-stepping safties with lumber, this good be a great season for our D.

As far as our receivers are concerned, Miah and Stuzz have time in the system and should be ready to go. Bell and Bright have talent and one year on the learning curve. there are loads with skill and apprenticeship and a slew of incoming with talent but no time-in-system.

It depends n Moniz. he is the magican who waves the wand.

  37. al March 14, 2011 10:45 am

i was thinking that brandon leslie could be the heir apparent to aaron brown.

mcbride has that size and speed similar to the aforementioned.

    it’ll be fun.

i think estes’ arrival could make for a lot of shuffling.

  38. Bulla March 14, 2011 11:02 am

    good morning gang,

spring ball, ah the luxury of football in the off season. congrats, no A BIG CONGRATS to Kahai for his lifts, very nice.

the team is shaping up, slowly but surely, and I expect the D to be pretty solid up the middle and at least 2 deep. with a little help from the edge, things could get exciting very, very fast.

With regards to JM’s question about softball in the Big West.

In two years, we’ve handled UC Davis quite well. This season we handled them and they are supposed to compete for the Big West Softball title this season in their conference.

Over the past couple of years Big West Softball hasn’t been stellar. Overall, the WAC isn’t the PAC 10 by any means but with Fresno State always providing serious competition, UH, and previously Nevada and at times New Mexico State have also provided good pitchers (Nevada) and offensive power (NMSU).

NMSU is an offensive power this season with Hoku Nohara, Nevada is rebuilding, and Fresno State is doing very well.

Right now, based on competition, WAC softball is easily a much better softball conference, but again considering the drastic changes about to take place, the Big West is the best option considering the recruiting base for Coach Coolen.

Will the Rainbow Wahine dominate softball in the Big West like how the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team has dominated the WAC? Signs point to “yes”, unless each program in the Big West starts to compete/recruit better.

  53. BleedGreen808 March 14, 2011 1:19 pm

    ST–

Did Aulola Tonga redshirt last year? Is he still projected to compete at LB?

  54. Stretch March 14, 2011 1:21 pm

BleedGreen – thanks for the video, right after finishing up my lunch

  55. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2011 1:21 pm

    Tonga did redshirt.

He still is at linebacker, although not very high on the depth chart. At the moment.

  56. Souljah March 14, 2011 1:28 pm

What about Taimatuia? Is he at LB or DE? Depth chart?

  57. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2011 1:30 pm

T.J. is an outside linebacker. For now.

He’s one of the more imposing players on defense.

  58. Souljah March 14, 2011 1:33 pm

    ST,

Please tell me Beau Yap is pushing for a starting spot.

  59. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2011 1:35 pm

Beau Yap is pushing for playing time.

    He looks pretty good.

His father, who was trying to hide while watching practice today, would agree.

  60. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2011 1:36 pm

Desmond Dean has come a long way, too. He was a little too thin in the fall. He’s gained some meaningful weight.

  61. Da Punchbowl Kid March 14, 2011 1:37 pm

    Nice news about Yap.

    Any news about the RBs?

  62. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2011 1:38 pm

By the way, UH is saying that tomorrow’s basketball game will be televised depending on the ticket sales.

Spoiler alert: There are two K5 television trucks parked outside of the Stan Sheriff Center.

  63. Kazz March 14, 2011 1:38 pm

    I’ve gained weight.

Not a whole lot of “meaning” behind it though.

  64. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2011 1:39 pm

Joey Iosefa got most of the reps at running back today.

It’s pretty much: Sterling Jackson, Joey Iosefa and John Lister. Joey Cadiz is out there, too. Hogan Rosehill probably won’t practice until after the spring break.

  65. Stephen Tsai March 14, 2011 1:41 pm

So I saw Tomey running around today.

Told him he looked natural being out on the field.

He said when you’ve done something for 50 years, it feels natural.

Yep. That is guy is never going to retire.

  66. BleedGreen808 March 14, 2011 1:48 pm

Philippians 4:13 (“I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.”)

Hmmm. Tsai gives us the New International translation which is P.C. It looks like Miah’s shirt actually has the King James version which may not be P.C. for a respected reporter to print or post. Here it goes, since I’m not respected, or a reporter.

Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through (C) which strengtheneth me.” (King James Version). One of my top five, favorite bible verses.

Art Laurel, Winchester-Makainai, and Legay had PT last season. So did Faaumui. Winchester-Makainai can play all five positions; Laurel was close to being a starter if not for injuries the past couple of years. If Austin can regain his eligibility, IMHO coming out of spring training these guys will be penciled in as starters going to fall training camp: LT Hansen 6-4/305, LG Winchester-Makainai 6-4/330, Center Lefiti 6-0/280, RG Leonard 6-5/310, and RT Art Laurel 6-2/290

Who Is This Steve Iser Guy?

Lately there’s been a lot of talk about this relatively unknown 24 year-old online millionaire named Steve Iser who’s exposing his software program Commission Crusher, to the world for a very limited time…

So just who is Steve and what should you know about him?

Simply put, Steve is unlike any other marketer online. With nearly 5 years of marketing online, Steve has gone from College dropout at 20 to millionaire status in less than 3 years.

He’s run the full gamut from promoting affiliate programs, creating info products, software training, sold websites, spoken at marketing conferences, created his own CPA offers and in the process of his career has already helped thousands of people create successful businesses online.

You name it – he’s probably done it. This young turk believes in “paying it forward”. In other wards, his goal with Commission Crusher is to help his 500 new students utilize his new software to create a new group of rich.

His new software program, Commission Crusher, utilizes a simple method that allows you to tap into any market or niche online and find out WHO exactly has the traffic – so you can tap into it and get a piece of the pie for youself.

Needless to say, he’s unlike most of these other “gurus” out there. He does things differently. And he takes a personal interest in helping his customers succeed.

If you want to know more about Commission Crusher and what Steve’s got going on right now, check it out below:

Article about how Bess and Chad Owens are working out together. Nice photo of Bess with the article.

Receiver Davone Bess has been busy on Twitter the last few days (@OfficialDB15) tweeting about his workouts.

Apparently he has been working out at an undisclosed South Florida gym with Jake Long, nose tackle Chris Baker and Chad Owens of the Toronto Argonauts, the CFL Special Teams Player of the Year.

    Hi whitey!

Yes, I know what you mean by going “back to the past.” Weird repeating the same day. I experienced the same thing returning from Hong Kong last year.

  102. gigi-hawaii March 14, 2011 6:54 pm

The funny thing was not feeling tired after the long flight to Tokyo and then another long flight to HNL. I slept very little on both planes, but for some reason, when I arrived at HNL around 7 a.m., I felt happy and energized.

  103. Garret March 14, 2011 6:54 pm

Each NCAA basketball tournament game a team plays makes their conference *$1.44 mil*. Just making the tournament as a conference title winner does not actually make a conference any money, since somebody from the conference was going to make it anyway. *Winning* games in the tournament makes conferences money.

This year nothing will affect UH’s situation because WAC or MWC wins in the tournament won’t give UH anything. The Big West might not count NCAA money earned before UH joined, but maybe they will be generous and give UH an equal share after 2012.

Each NCAA Tournament team receives $240,000 for each game played in the tournament multiplied by six years.

    Hi Garret.

  106. Garret March 14, 2011 7:02 pm

Forget all that talk about the Big 12 splitting up, something that some people keep speculating about in the media. I thought that the Big 12 would stay together once Texas decided to stay, and now the TV money will keep everyone there.

The main ABC/ESPN contract is worth $60 mil/year, but that is up in 2015-2016 and it looks like ESPN/Fox/Comcast will have a bidding war that will at least double that.

The cable contract with Fox for the 2nd-tier games is now going from $20 mil/year to close to $70 mil/year…more than triple what they were getting.

Texas will be getting $15 mil/year from ESPN for their local TV rights (which includes 1 football game at a minimum).

Oklahoma will get around $10 mil/year from their TV channel.

Texas A&M/Baylor/Texas Tech/Kansas/KState/IState/OState/Missouri will apparently join to get their own sports channel.

So, if the TV rights go for what they are saying when the bidding war starts in a few years, the Big 12 will get more than the SEC and far more than the Pac-12. In other words, the Big 12 won’t be going anywhere. They may add 2 more teams in 2016 so that they can add the conference title game to the TV deal. If they added 2 teams now, they wouldn’t get any extra TV money…but when this TV deal ends in a few years, adding 2 schools (BYU and Louisville are my guess) would make them money.

240,000 X 11 ( the number of Big East teams in the NCAA tournament) = $2,640,000 for the next 6 years to the Big East. And that’s if all 11 teams lose their 1st round game which is unlikely. Easy math, even for a public school attendee. Adding each game won by a conference member, now that’s too hard for me.

  110. gigi-hawaii March 14, 2011 7:22 pm

don’t knock public schools. I graduated from one, and older daughter teaches math at another. lol.

  111. Garret March 14, 2011 7:22 pm

The new CBS/Turner contract means that the NCAA basketball tournament is worth a LOT more to conferences now…and schools need the money more in this economy, so each game is crucial. It used to be that a 1-and-done made a conference about $900k, but now that is $1.44 mil.

The Big East in 2008-2009 made about $20 mil in NCAA basketball tournament money. Under the new contract, that would be more than $30 mil! This year they got even more teams in the tournament than ever before, so they could make $40 mil from basketball sometime!

Getting *2* football teams in BCS bowls makes a conference $24 mil, but $7 mil or so of that will be eaten up by expenses. So, being a good basketball conference will actually make the Big East more than double in NCAA basketball money than what they make as being a BCS conference. Wow.

  112. Garret March 14, 2011 7:24 pm

The Big West got something like $1.8 mil from NCAA basketball money. The ratio of Big West basketball money to Big East basketball money is far WORSE than BCS conference money is compared to WAC or MWC money.

The WAC saying that they “just heard about” Fresno State playing SDSU on 12/3 when they thought they had finally finished the conference schedule in March really bugs me. I actually wrote up a multiple-page document that proved that the WAC was both *lying* and *incompetent*. It is hard to be both, but the WAC leadership is pitiful enough to accomplish it!

    1. The WAC seriously waited until March to check what nonconference games Fresno State was playing? Step 1 in making up a conference schedule should be to see when the nonconference games are being played! Pitiful incompetence.

    2. Ever since Fresno State declared for the MWC, the WAC has *excluded* Fresno State from all meetings that discussed scheduling. If you are going to exclude a school when you are making up the schedule, you should make sure you aren’t missing anything!

    3. The WAC said that *no* teams were supposed to play nonconference games on 12/3 so Fresno messed things up. However, the WAC announced awhile back that UH was playing a nonconference game against BYU on 12/3! So, the WAC violated the rule they announced!

    4. The WAC will have 8 teams in 2011. They announced UH was playing BYU on 12/3. That leaves 7 teams available for conference games. One of those teams *had* to schedule a nonconference game on 12/3 because of UH! Simple math (probably beyond the WAC’s leadership) should be able to figure out that 7 teams cannot divide equally by 2.

    5. The WAC purposely used the legal wording that Fresno State made it hard for them to make a “fair and equitable schedule” because they wanted to get an excuse to $%#& Fresno State with the schedule. That indicates they want to be vindictive towards the schools that are leaving. If I am JD, I’d better watch my back with the WAC to see what the WAC will try to do to UH. No school (aside from BSU) can leave the WAC and trust that Karl Benson will act honorably (or competently) towards them.

  118. Garret March 14, 2011 7:45 pm

Oceanic is televising the UH-Portland game. They paid $7500 for the TV rights. Too bad for the Dish/DirecTV subscribers…

The University of Hawaii announced today that tomorrow night’s CollegeInsider.com postseason tournament basketball opener will be shown on Oceanic-Time Warner cable.

The announcement came after $51,800 in ticket revenue was taken in by 4 p.m. Along with the $7,500 Oceanic bid, UH has already surpassed the $58,000 it said it needed to break even on hosting the event.

  119. Garret March 14, 2011 7:50 pm

    whitey,

Lots of people here have been upset with Karl Benson and the rest of the WAC leadership for years. But I never saw the WAC stoop to such deception and display such incompetence before!

Doesn’t an assistant commissioner make well over $100k plus he gets an expense account? So, he’s assigned to make up the football schedule and doesn’t check the nonconference schedule of Fresno State, while Karl Benson forbids Fresno State from taking part in any meeting about the schedule?

I believe that you or anyone else here could have done a much better job. However, we might not be unbiased and UH might have gotten an extra home game…

Note that with 7 conference games, some WAC schools will get 3 home games and others will get 4 home games. The schools with 3 home games will lose money because they have to pay for their road expenses and won’t get the extra home game revenue. My prediction is that the WAC wants Fresno State, Nevada, and UH to have just 3 home games in the conference schedule.

Very interesting article about the nuclear reactor situation in Japan.

    1. The nuclear reactors were designed for a maximum 8.2-magnitude earthquake, so the 8.9-magnitude earthquake was 7x stronger than the maximum it was designed to withstand.

    2. The reactor was fine after the earthquake…until the tsunami came and destroyed all multiple sets of backup Diesel generators!

    3. Even then, things were fine for 8 hours due to the emergency backup power from the batteries (the batteries were the backups to the backups). However, another power source has to be connected to the power plant by the end of the 8 hours.

    4. The power grid was down due to the earthquake and the diesel generators were destroyed by the tsunami, so mobile diesel generators were brought in…but the mobile diesel generators could not be connected to the power plant because the *plugs didn’t fit* so after the batteries ran out the heat could not be carried away anymore:

based on the yearly rotation of home and way conference games, Hawaii is scheduled to play four on the road and three at home. The 4th home game would have been Boise State. They are leaving the WAC in 2011. Sorry, no conspiracy there. But, we get the point–Benson will bleed-out as much cash as is legally permissable from of the three programs moving to the Mountain West. Wahine won the softball game tonight 3-2 against Longwood. Briana Wells again outstanding against the Bows, allowing only two hits, but both were triples. Longwood also had three errors with the last bringing in Sarah Robinson from third in the bottom of the seventh. Sarah hit the key triple and Alex Aguirre hit the other. It was mentioned that this tournament featured some great pitching or poor hitting, take you choice. Of the ten games played 7 were shutouts. I believe that it was the former. Each of the team had at least one very good pitcher; the Bows feasted on 2nd and 3rd line pitchers. Another reason for the dominant pitching is the very generous strike zone of all the umpires. They were all consistent in calling strikes anything 3 to 4 inches off the outside of the plate and 2 inches inside of the plate. High pitches at the shoulder level were called strikes. The umpires were not generous with low pitches, however. The calls were pretty consistent for both opposing teams. I attended most of the games in the tournament. I never heard so many groans from the stands in regard to the calls. Old times fans…is this different from previous years?

Majam moved down to the #5 spot after raising her BA 29 points in yesterday’s DH, including a homerun. Coolen than protected Kelly with Melissa and Robinson batting after her.

    Tonight, Kelly whiffed twice.

Coolen must be pulling out the remainder of his hair trying to shake-up his lineup to get wahine bats pounding. Coach, batting order adjustments work when the team is hitting and shifting the order sometimes ignites chemistry among batters when appropriately placed.

The problem apparently lays spmewhere else and the batting cage is the best lab to observe hitting mechanics, restart, and hopefully resolve woeful slumps. Hawaii will start conference play next week against Utah State.

Any thoughts on how the Superferry might boost UH football attendance in the future? The ferries could run FB charters, with buses to pick up ferry passengers right from the pier to the stadium.

I don’t think Oahu and possibly the state as a whole HAS ENOUGH true UH sports devotees willing to sacrifice the dough to finance big time college football- higher ticket prices, parking fees, etc. UH needs someone like Oregon’s Phil Knight, or at least UH Bus Ad’s Jay Shidler, who forked over $25 mill.

    Hawaiiansun,

Coolen does not have a clue on how to fix the Wahine batting woes. I agree with you, changing the batting order will not help for the reason you have given. The Wahine have not beaten a Top 20 front line pitcher yet this season. True they beat Stanford, and Oklahoma, but their front line pitcher did not start the game in both cases. When the front line pitcher has started the Wahines batters do not have a clue. That is not their fault but the fault of Coolen. Even against an average team’s front line pitcher the Wahine have trouble.

People the WAC season is just around the corner, and so is Fresno St. It is extremely crucial that the Wahine start to hit this coming tournament, or things could get bleak very fast.

  134. WahineSoftballFan March 14, 2011 9:12 pm

One way you can tell Coolen does not have a clue, try finding him in the batting house when the Wahine are in there before their game. You will find him with a leaf blower, broom, or rack, cleaning up the clubhouse, dugout, or the path leading to the batting house. Not doing what he is suppose to be doing, working with the hitters in the batting house. Next time anyone of you goes to the game, try going to the batting house before the game, and see if you can find Coolen in there instructing his players.

  135. WahineSoftballFan March 14, 2011 9:17 pm

People, I am not looking for the Wahine to hit home runs like they did last year, no way. All I am looking for is line drive base hits. These same Wahine that were hitting for average are no where close to their average from last year. That is the fault of the coach, not the player. If Coach Coolen continues on this path, the Wahine, no fault of their own, will be on the outside looking in. When it should not be the case.

I do feel sorry for the Wahine, cause they are not getting the coaching they rightly deserve. When you are in the stands and hear parents of players coaching their daughter you start to wonder where the heck the coach is. Is that not his job to do that, not leave it up to the parents to do so.

I would like to start my own blog one day. This was a really nice blog that you made here.Howd u do it?

  142. jm2375 March 14, 2011 9:51 pm

    Hi Ralph!

  143. WahineSoftballFan March 14, 2011 9:54 pm

    Ralph,

You are one of those who really do not care if the Wahine’s get to the NCAA tournament or not, it looks like. You are probably one of those that wanted Van Appen to still be the Head Football Coach. Even have Coach Nash stay on as the Head Basketball Coach cause he was nice, so what if there teams had losing seasons.

  144. whitey March 14, 2011 9:57 pm

ralph, i neva say anything, i was just looking

  145. WahineSoftballFan March 14, 2011 9:57 pm

I am beginning to strongly beleive all you people want is a NICE Coach, who cares if the team loses the majority of their games.

  146. gigi-hawaii March 14, 2011 9:58 pm

    SteveM,

That was a fun blast from the past. There I was, still playing social director. lol.

And I remember that bit about Tom Mui meeting the guys at the cattle call for the 1st time. Yeah, he used to babysit back then, not sure if he and Lois still do.

  147. gigi-hawaii March 14, 2011 10:02 pm

    Tommui,

Did you actually take your laptop with you on this current trip, or are you using your phone to blog and take pictures?

  148. gigi-hawaii March 14, 2011 10:05 pm

Sad that David and I are taking no vacation trips this year. Too many other demands on our wallet, alas.

We were planning to see Montreal and Quebec City this summer, but that will have to wait til next year.

  149. gigi-hawaii March 14, 2011 10:08 pm

What I really wish is this: I wish we could all get along on the Warrior Beat.

    No negativity allowed!

There are many ways to express yourself without antagonizing others!

  150. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc March 14, 2011 10:15 pm

I’ve confirmed my earlier statements about the upcoming capital improvement projects for the University of Hawai`i Department of Athletics. The UH staffer who oversees all campus projects will be sending me the on-line listings which I’ll post when they arrive.

Two important matters to consider, however. More money will be needed to complete both the improvements at the softball stadium as well as the lighting fixtures in The Les.

How much more money is needed? Best Guestimate is about $1.5 milllon to complete both projects. I’ll be confirming the amount sometime over the next week or so.

There are two ways to address these needs: The first is to create an organized advocacy group which is not just made up of coaches & administrators to go downtown educate & inform members of the State Legislature as to why these improvements are as important as replacing the elevators in Saunders Hall or upgrading the Campus Center; the second is to embark on a fund-raising drive to generate the additional funds.

It is my belief based upon a kazillion years’ worth of lobbying experience that, if we UH fans could raise $750,000, the Legislature would match that money. If every season ticketholder in all six sports donated just $15 per sport – in our case that would be six times 2 times $15 – we could raise the matching funds. I think we can all afford to do that.

Someone asked last week why I was opposed to tearing down Klum Gym to build more parking. First of all, the gym is used from early morning to late at night by all kinds of teams. Tearing down the gym will be a major loss.

Second, Klum is a part of UH’s history. We need to protect it and keep it up like we have other structures which make our history.

Third, more parking is not needed. However, City & County requirements take precedence in determining how much parking is required – and the C&C wants at least another 1000 spaces to be made available.

Instead of tearing down Klum, why not build two more floors on the existing paarking lot. As long as it isn’t higher than the law school, it really makes sense to do it that way.

The difference in price would also be significant.

As for the entire Aloha Stadium site, the Abercrombie Administration wants to use it to build at thousands of affordable homes for people to buy and multi-family rental units. That’s one of Neil’s highest priorities. Aloha Stadium is in the way of achieving those goals.

With respect to a new stadium, I doubt seriously under the present set of economic circumstances and without private sector investment that a new stadium will be built anywhere on O`ahu much before 2030.

The current Manoa campus leadership is NOT in favor of moving the Stadium out to West O`ahu, but they may not have much say in the decision-making.

We have to deal with these complicated issues directly – not just let The Downtown Big Boys make the decisions without hearing from us.

Back to work – nine hearings tomorrow plus a basketball game tomorrow night. Go Rainbow Warriors.

  151. bow78vb March 14, 2011 10:20 pm

hey steven , how big did pollard and stuz get. they both needed to put on some pounds. wr looks nice and deep. slots depth???

  152. gigi-hawaii March 14, 2011 10:24 pm

Wow, WDoc, you brought up some interesting points.

I sort of agree with you about preserving Klum Gym as a historical site. Lots of memories there! Besides games, I remember it being used during registration — standing in a long line waiting for it to be opened and then rushing in to pick up IBM mag cards for various classes.

Re: Aloha Stadium. If Abercrombie is allowed to tear it down to contruct affordable housing, all hell will break loose. I simply cannot believe he would do this. After all, he has always supported UH athletics in the past. I am very disappointed in him. And to think I actually voted for him!

  153. jm2375 March 14, 2011 10:24 pm

Any Tsaikos interested in getting a table for the Warrior Volleyball banquet on Sun 4/17? Please let me know.

  154. WahineSoftballFan March 14, 2011 10:25 pm

    Hey Ralph,

Now I am starting to understand why you want people to ignore me. Cause you do not want people to beleive the truth when it is staring them right in the face. You would rather they believe in fantasy.

  155. jm2375 March 14, 2011 10:28 pm

    Congrats to the Wahine!

Congrats to BYUH for advancing to the DII Elite Eight.

  156. gigi-hawaii March 14, 2011 10:37 pm

    JM,

that’s a great idea to reserve a table for Tsaikos, and it would be nice if ST could sit there, too.

I watch Mens volleyball only sporadically, though.

Hope you get a good response!

IOLANI BARBIE: This princess Barbie is only sold at Iolani. She comes with an assortment of Kate Spade handbags, a Lexus SUV, a longhaired foreign dog named Honey, and a cookie-cutter house. Available with or without tummy tuck and facelift. Note: Studious Ken

sold only in conjunction with “augmented” version.

HAWAII KAI BARBIE: This modern-day homemaker Barbie is available with Ford Windstar minivan and matching velour gym outfit. She gets lost easily and has no full time occupation or secondary education. Traffic-jamming cell phone sold separately.

MAYOR WRIGHT HOUSING BARBIE: This recently paroled Barbie comes with a 9 mm handgun, a Chevy with dark tinted windows, and a meth lab kit. This model is only available after dark and can only be paid for in cash, preferably small, untraceable bills, unless you are a cop, then we don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.

PUNAHOU BARBIE: This yuppie Barbie comes with your choice of BMW convertible or Hummer H2. Included is her own Starbucks cup, credit card, and Oahu Country Club membership. Also available for this set are Shallow Ken and Private School Skipper. You won’t be able to afford any of them.

UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII BARBIE: Short, highly tanned and ready to land a husband-we mean, get an education. Comes with standard issue shorts with “Go Bows” printed largely on the butt. Also comes wearing latest “themed” sorority party T-shirt, hair in pony tail and a gaggle of similar looking friends, each carrying the latest in knock-off Kate Spade bags

and with Honda Civic. Undecided major and drunken, backward-hat Frat Boy Ken sold separately.

UP COUNTRY BARBIE: This pale model comes dressed in her own Wrangler jeans two sizes too small, a NASCAR shirt, and Tweety Bird tattoo on her shoulder. She has a six-pack of Bud Light and a Greatest Hawaiian Country Hits CD set. She can spit over 5 feet and kick Mullet-Haired Ken’s butt when she is drunk. Purchase her pickup truck separately and get a Maui No Ka Oi bumper sticker absolutely free.

KAHALA BARBIE: This collagen injected, rhino-plastic Barbie wears a leopard print spandex outfit and drinks cosmopolitans while entertaining friends at Waialae Country Club. Percocet prescription available.

WAIANAE BARBIE: This tobacco chewing, brassy-haired Barbie has a pair of her own high-heeled sandals with one broken heel from the time she chased Beer-Gut Ken out of Waipahu Barbie’s repossessed house. Her ensemble includes low-rise acid-washed jeans, fake

    fingernails, and a see-through halter-top.

HOTEL STREET BARBIE: This slacker Barbie looks an awful lot like Waianae Barbie without a shower. Comes with a pack of clove cigarettes and a sixer of PBR. There are accessory packages with various assortments of body piercings and tattoos available, but they must be purchased separately because, like, she doesn’t have a job.

DOWN-TO-EARTH BARBIE: This doll is made of actual tofu. She has long straight faded blue hair, archless feet, hairy armpits, no makeup, and Birkenstocks with white socks. She prefers that you call her “Willow.” She does not want or need a Ken doll, but if you purchase two Down-to-Earth Barbies and the optional Subaru wagon, you get a rainbow sticker for free.

FARRINGTON BARBIE: This Barbie now comes with a stroller and infant doll. Optional accessories include a GED and bus pass. Gangsta Ken and his ’79 Caddy were available, but are now very difficult to find since the addition of the infant.

WAIPAHU BARBIE: This Filipino-speaking Barbie comes with a 1984 Toyota with expired temporary plates and three babies in the back seat, but no car seats. The optional Pinoy Ken doll comes with a machete and work gloves. Ken comes with his own 1979 Ford pickup with a Mufi bumper sticker, tinted windows, and Our Lady of Manila rear window stickers. Truck is painted primer gray, but wheels and rims are not available. Comes with cement blocks. Green cards are not available for Waipahu Barbie or Ken.

RIVER STREET BARBIE/KEN: This versatile doll can be easily converted from Barbie to Ken by simply adding or subtracting the multiple “snap-on” parts.

  160. gigi-hawaii March 14, 2011 11:32 pm

Can’t believe LV actually wrote all of that. What a creative mind!

  161. gigi-hawaii March 14, 2011 11:34 pm

David said: Good friends stay with you forever!

    I second that.

  162. cocobean March 14, 2011 11:42 pm

Name the sport and you’ll always find a fan who thinks he/she is smarter than the coach. Knows what ails the team and has tons of advice on how to correct it.

Most smart coaches ignore this type of fan. Unless your name is von Appen. Then you actualy solict their advice. Remeber when he said he was open to suggestions.

  163. WahineSoftballFan March 14, 2011 11:50 pm

    Cocobean,

That is why von Appen had the record he had. He kept listening to all of you who told him he was doing a good job. No matter how bad a coach is doing, you people always say he/she is doing a good job.

  164. WahineSoftballFan March 14, 2011 11:53 pm

    Cocobean,

If you are saying that Coach Coolen is a good coach, then why have the Wahine not been able to hit all season long. They have not even been able to touch the Ace of any Top 20 team, or even the Ace of teams with winning records.

  165. WahineSoftballFan March 14, 2011 11:56 pm

    Cocobean,

It would not surprise me if you were one of those that did not want Coach Nash fired, instead wanted to give him an extension to his contract.

  166. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 12:05 am

Let’s see Ralph, then Cocobean, could not take the truth, who next, I wonder.

  167. Deeann Vetter March 15, 2011 12:05 am

Never saw a Blog like this.Keep it up guys. Fashion

  168. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 12:07 am

If you ask Coolen, he will say that the Wahine beat Longwood’s Ace, but in actuality, Longwood beat themselves.

  169. al March 15, 2011 12:11 am

whoa brah…you must have been a hella athlete in your day, huh?

  170. Ralph March 15, 2011 12:17 am

cocobean, please ignore WahineSoftballFan, and continue to support UH athletics.

  171. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 12:23 am

Hey Ralph, I want the best for UH Athletics. Inotherwards, ultimate goal, be #1, in as many sports as possible. What do you want Ralph??? Sound like 2nd best, to me!!!

  172. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 12:26 am

The Wahine Softball Team has the talent to be #1, but a lack of coaching right now is holding them back.

  173. gigi-hawaii March 15, 2011 12:29 am

Good night, all. It’s been a long day and some of us need to hit the sack.

  174. al March 15, 2011 12:30 am

whoa brah…besides being one hella athlete, on top of that you one hella coach, too, huh?

  175. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 12:34 am

Hey al, I gather you are another one that likes mediocrity. Von Appen, Frank Arnold, and Bob Nash must have loved you backing them up.

  176. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 12:35 am

al, you must have been the one in the AD’s, trying to stop them from getting fired.

  177. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 12:40 am

For all of you, the reason we lost June Jones, is because Hawaii, does not mind being 2nd best. Never want to strive to be the best.

  178. al March 15, 2011 12:41 am

no you are once again totally off base.

but, you did not answer my questions? is it true or not true?

or are you just an armchair pundit?

  179. al March 15, 2011 12:42 am

so you must be the best at what you do?

  180. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 12:48 am

Am I truly off base al, I do not believe so. One reason, you are satisfied with the way the Wahine Softball Team is playing, even tho, they maybe should be undefeated, with better coaching.

Are you saying, you were not one of those that backed Coach Nash, and did not want a coaching change.

  181. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 12:50 am

BTW, I am not just an armchair pundit, as you put it.

  182. al March 15, 2011 12:58 am

you are off…base. how do you know where i stand on these things?

who said i was satisfied? in fact, you can ask others, i don’t follow the softball team at all. so where do you get this assumption?

have you coached? since you say you are not just a pundit? if so, prove it.

reveal your identity and your credentials.

maybe people think you are just shooting from the hip. anyone can do that.

beleive what you want…but until you can prove it. i have my own opinions, but, unlike you i don’t blast others.

i stopped supporting nash awhile back. i made it public, but, i never shoved him down the river. he did a lot for this university in his time.

    what did you do?

  183. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 1:04 am

Question al, do you want to see the Warrior football team become #1 in the nation, or just win their conference?

  184. Carros Tunados March 15, 2011 1:12 am

Su articulo era muchiiiiiuuu informativo. Millones de gracias por tu contribucion al internet con su articulo.. Chau

  185. al March 15, 2011 1:21 am

are you answering my questions with another question?

answer me then i’ll continue a discussion with you.

  186. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 1:23 am

Guess I was right, after all. al only wants the Warriors to win the conference, never mind about being #1, no wonder they could not beat Boise St. except for once. Difference between the Warriors and Boise St., the latter wants to be #1, enough said.

  187. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 1:25 am

I have coached before, have you?

  188. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 1:25 am

    Not to mention, played also.

  189. al March 15, 2011 1:30 am

    there you go again…evasive.

you keep trying to satisfy your alterego by putting words in my mouth.

    you don’t even know me.

your last statement has no logic nor rhyme or reason. you must be past your bedtime.

    get some rest.

tomorrow you will reread your last post and realize you made no sense at all.

i am trying to understand you but, you march to the beat of your own drummer. it is okay.

    we’ll forgive you later.

  190. al March 15, 2011 1:31 am

    coached…yes. twenty years and played.

  191. al March 15, 2011 1:32 am

so your teams were all undefeated…why don’t you volunteer to coach with coolen. then you can prove to all that you do know what you are talking about.

focus your energies to do some good.

  192. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 1:49 am

I have pointed things out to Coolen, tried to help, but he is one of those that wants to do it his way, not listen to no one.

  193. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 1:50 am

BTW, I am not the only one that has tried to help. Coolen just does not want to listen.

WSF – with your type of attitude I wouldn’t listen to you either, you show no respect to the student athlete and expcet everyone to be perfect.

  196. Liberty Mastrangelo March 15, 2011 2:56 am

You may Jordan Shoes have not necessarily intended to do so, but I think you might have were able to express the state of mind that many folks are inside. The sense associated with wanting to assist, however , not knowing how or in which, is some thing many us happen to be dealing.

  197. tom mui March 15, 2011 3:40 am

One thing I have learned over seventy years, everyone wants to act in an advisory position.

Not to take responsibility but to give advice.

I guess we can’t satisfy everybody.

Warrior offensive line is an L shape. We got Laurel, Leonard, Lefiti, and Legay. Then we also have Lefotu, Loyd, and Loeffler. Anybody I missed?

    Wafan ~

    Re: #201

Others no like play wit him! Didn’t we use to call people like him a ‘mister-know-it-all’ wen we wuz kids?! Even worse wen dey get old.

I’m willing to bet all of Homey’s lunch money that coach ‘C’ would never listen to someone like WSF…ever!

Why?…Shut up for just one minute while that thought sinks in.

Besides, we don’t even listen to you, what makes you think anyone else would?

  208. Kekoa March 15, 2011 6:47 am

Oh my! I think I woke up on the cantankerous side of the bed. Sorry for the rant!

Good Tuesday morning everyone. It was great to see the fb clips on the local news last nite!

    Go Warriors!

  209. duffer March 15, 2011 6:49 am

Why would coach Coolen listen to WSF?

  210. gigi-hawaii March 15, 2011 6:58 am

If WSF was a coach and a player, as he indicated above, did his team go undefeated every year he coached and played?

Al asked him that question, but it went unanswered.

What are WSF’s credentials? He should reveal them.

  211. gigi-hawaii March 15, 2011 7:01 am

    Tommui,

thanks for answering my question. Yes, taking a laptop on your trip makes sense.

I don’t have a smart phone, so I take my Acer Netbook with me. It is smaller than a regular laptop and easier to pack in my carry on luggage. The trouble with it is that the cursor keeps jumping around on the screen, making it difficult to post photos.

    Ah, well, better than nothing!

  212. ya_think March 15, 2011 7:03 am

Coolen would listen to him, shake his head yes then go about his job just as before. He is responsible for the program and he will do what it takes to make the program grow and be the best they can be. He didn’t get to where he is because he doesn’t know what he is doing.

  213. LizKauai (macbook) March 15, 2011 7:09 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    Have a great HiHo Day!

  214. ya_think March 15, 2011 7:11 am

During his tenure at UH, Coolen has coached 15 All-Americans, 29 All-West region, and 48 all-conference players. Twenty-two players have earned NFCA Scholar Athlete honors since 1992 and 23 players to date have earned Academic All-WAC honors as well. Coolen has also coached two CoSIDA Academic All-America players. Of course he has no clue at all of how to run a softball program – NOT.

  215. Onita Daw March 15, 2011 7:11 am

Hi, pleasent read. Enjoy every bit. Thank you.

  216. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 7:34 am

    Ya-Think,

With that many All-Everything type players, how often has he gone to the NCAA Tournament, not to mention the Softball World Series. Seems to me he should have gone a whole lot, but actually not, wonder why. Could it be Coaching!!!! Diffinitely not the players since you mention the All-Everything type players they had.

  217. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 7:36 am

You give other coaches those types of players and guess what, they are in the NCAA tournament, not to mention Women’s College Softball World Series a whole lot of times, not just once.

  218. Lanaiboy March 15, 2011 7:44 am

Re: Wahine softball….Cal comes in with a Jolene Henderson as its primary pitcher. This past weekend she pitched and won four games in 2 days, holding the opposing teams to three runs. The upcoming Chevron Fling tournament should be great for watching with traditional rival BYU and Cal coming in.

  219. gigi-hawaii March 15, 2011 7:46 am

    WSF,

why don’t you submit your resume to Jim Donovan? Maybe, he will hire you to replace Coach Coolen.

No harm in trying. Good luck!

  220. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 7:56 am

    Lanaiboy,

This coming tournament, The Chevron Spring Fling, is going to be a really good indication on what kind of coach Coolen really is. If the Wahine’s cannot get by BYU, and especially California, it is going to be a very long season. Do not forget Fresno St. in a couple of weeks, at their place, oh my.

  221. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 8:00 am

For the rest of you who do not mind the Wahine being just average when they can be great, with coaching. You get what you want. I always thought you people wanted the UHAD to be the best it can be, but I guess it is only talk. Cause it really seems that most of you are satisfied with the UHAD being just average.

  222. ya_think March 15, 2011 8:04 am

Could it be that the coaching took good players and made them into all everything players? How many all everything did you coach and BTW what sport did you coach in?

  223. papajoe2 March 15, 2011 8:06 am

Not only Coolen. Also Dave Shoji and who else? Lose 1 and you’re done.

  226. papajoe2 March 15, 2011 8:09 am

al, sooo funny. you got sucked in.

  227. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 8:16 am

Other coaches take good players and make them all-everything, but they do not stop there, you also see their teams in the World Series, also, year after year. What UH only once, during all that time!!!

  228. papajoe2 March 15, 2011 8:17 am

What would be the description of a successful coach? At a school? Win every game? Graduate your student athletes? With academic honors for all? With ALL your student athletes making every All American team thus leaving none for any other athlete from any other team? Hmmmm……….

  229. gigi-hawaii March 15, 2011 8:20 am

    WSF,

How many tournaments have you won as coach and/or player?

Have your teams gone undefeated every year?

Don’t be so evasive. Answer the questions.

Can someone get Jim Donovan in touch with WahineSoftballFan please. It’s killing me that our beloved University of Hawaii athletics program is in shambles because all of our coaches suck the big fat hairy nut sack. None of them are competent enough to have any of our athletics teams go undefeated or be #1 and win a championship. I’m tired of this mediocrity, it’s some bullcrap is you ask me. WahineSoftballFan please save our beloved University of Hawaii athletics department from the depths of the abyss… I humbly ask you to save us please, it seems you are the only hope we have left. I know you’ve got all the best coaching secrets in all sports, I mean how in the world has no one taken any notice. Thank God you are here and we can use your vast knowledge, advice, and expertise in having all of our sports teams be #1 and win championships. Like you, anything less and our Warrior program is just one big pile of crap… I humbly ask you to please help us and get our program where it should be, thanks in advance…

  232. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 8:35 am

A successful coach is like Coach K, the UCLA or Arizona softball coaches, the Penn St. women’s volleyball coach, etc. Coaches that strive to make their team #1 and stay there season after season.

  233. haka March 15, 2011 8:38 am

    WSF,

Your postings are a good indication of what kind of person you are. You are definitely not average. You are above all. Superior in every way. The brightest star in the galaxy. You never settle for less. It’s always more. You are the creme de la creme. Your every word is truth. No one can deny that. Everyone should heed the knowledge of you, the chosen one. Blessed beyond the reaches of the universe. Extra-terrestrial. Other worldly. A winner. Infused with tiger blood. Exactly! ‘Nuff sed.

  234. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 8:38 am

Why do you think, the majority of great high school athletes go to mainland schools, especially in football, cause they want a chance to win a national championship.

  235. al March 15, 2011 8:39 am

papajoe2…hahaaha. i am not sucked in. i got him to suck his self in his own kaka and waha.

he won’t address my questions. no mo enough you know what.

it’s okay…i have exposed his bs.

it is too bad, he could have been saved. others see him for what he really is. too bad he broke his mirror on the wall. he think he all that, poor thing. no mo friends the guy.

anyone who thinks like that will sooner or later sink to the depths…it is written.

  236. papajoe2 March 15, 2011 8:44 am

how much for your pay? can you do more than 1 team and 1 sport a year? does your institution or you, get a buy out contract since you will go undefeated and other schools will want to raid you? will playing basketball against a conference foe who is getting millions and millions every year from the ncaa not make a difference in being victorious? will you get mediocore players and make everyone of them all americans or will you get all blue chip recruits? do you have outside connections that can sucure the blue chippers and then you can blame them if it doesn’t pan out? will no one leave your programs because they all think that they are too good? get homesick? as a coach, do you have a plan for your seasons and will you listen to every person that thinks he knows better than you? will you secure every local recruit for your sports teams and still be undefeated? will you take all your medicine before you go to bed?

  237. NCAA March 15, 2011 8:45 am

A majority of great high school athletes go to the mainland schools is because a majority of great high school athletes live on the mainland.

  238. WahineSoftballFan March 15, 2011 8:46 am

Those comments tell me that you people just want UHAD teams to be just average. To bad Coach Arnold is trying so hard to take the Basketball team to the ranks of the likes of Duke and other teams like that. He really is wasting his efforts on you folks who just want the Basketball team to be average.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

  279. Rosetta stone spanish March 20, 2011 9:39 pm

I’ll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass’ favor.

  285. jimmy choo hobo bag March 21, 2011 8:37 pm

If you’re still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you’ll know which is right for you.

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
