Making contact

Wide receiver Trevor Davis was in a jersey and shorts when he walked onto Ching field yesterday for what was supposed to be a light practice. Davis, who had missed the past two games because of a hamstring injury, was told to return to the locker room and put on his pads.

He was told he would be playing in the weekly scrimmage. The controlled scrimmage used to be limited to redshirts and developing players. The participation now has expanded to non-starters who need extra on-field work.

What has remained consistent is the play of linebacker Jonathan Makaiau, who had another strong performance. Coach Norm Chow noted that by the end of the scrimmage, Makaiau’s helmet was crooked after his facemask broke while scrambling for a loose football.

Here’s the rundown:

Drive No. 1 (at defense’s 38-yard line)

• Jared Leaf rush for 2 yards.

• Taylor Graham completes pass to Clark Evans for 7 yards.

• Leaf rushes for 7 yards.

• Graham play-action completion to Craig Cofer for 10 yards.

• Leaf rush for 0 yards.

• Graham screen completion to Justin Vele for 6 yards.

• Graham complete to Vele for 6 yards and a touchdown.

Drive No. 2 (at defense’s 40):

• Ikaika Woolsey incomplete to Trevor Davis.

• Steven Lakalaka rush for 7 yards.

• Woolsey slant completion to Darius Bright for 7 yards.

• Woolsey slant completion to Bright for 17 yards.

• Lakalaka rush for minus-3 yards.

• Woolsey incomplete to Elijah Langley.

• Woolsey incomplete.

• Woolsey sacked by Desmond Dean.

Drive No. 3 (Defense’s 40):

• Leaf rush for 4 yards.

• Leaf rush for minus-4 yards (hit by Makaiau).

• Graham incomplete to Cofer.

Drive No. 4 (Defense’s 40):

• Graham incomplete (Makaiau pass breakup).

• Offsides penalty.

• Leaf rush for 1 yard (Big hit by Makaiau).

• Graham completion to Cofer for 14 yards.

• Graham incomplete to Davis (Brian Clay deflection).

• Graham fumbled snap, recovers.

• Graham sacked for minus-3 (by Hunter Thomson).

Drive No. 5 (Defense’s 40)

• Jason Muraoka rush for minus-2 (Mike Andrade with the hit).

• Woolsey scramble for 6 yards.

• Woolsey scramble for 2 yards.

• Marcus Langkilde rush for 6 yards

(It was a first down, but it was decided to re-set the situation.)

Drive No. 6 (Defense’s 10):

• Lakalaka rush for 3 yards.

• Lakalaka rush for 1 yard (big hit by Andrade).

• Graham incomplete to Cofer in left corner of end zone.

What medications are you taking to treat this cold? How’d you get this cold?

    Sorry for all the questions.

  18. madeinhawaii October 30, 2012 8:20 am

When JJ came on board, I think there were like 9 or 10 Local and/or Polynesian players on the roster… when he left there were more than 25… Mack continued that legacy. The RnS allowed the team to recruit a lot of the smaller ball handlers from the islands as well as QBs. Because we don’t need as many slots and we need QBs that take snaps under center, we will probably start to see these numbers dwindle, again.

  20. Annoddah Dave October 30, 2012 8:29 am

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

This season as well as some in the past where new coaches have been hired is indicative that the phrase-“Hit the ground running” has little or no bearing on reality. Even in the humdrum work world, I found very few managers, supervisors, and employees coming from outside the system that could do that. Hiring should be based on potential that takes time…to be fully realized. But in the 21st century, nobody thinks they have time to wait. Instant gratification is the order of the day. Turtles live longer than hares.

Last time I wen check, get one braddah name Norm at UH who getting paid about one quarter million dollars a year ($250,000) to coach college football. Last time I wen check also football was a pretty straight forward game. You get the ball, you pass the ball, or you run the ball, and you score. Den you go on defense and try stop the oddah guys from scoring. Seems to one simple braddah like me dat coaching one bunch of braddahs to play to game not as hard as say doing something like brain surgery or making, da kine, rockets fly to the moon, la dat.

Wit all this said, one simple braddah just wondering why if something not working out as planned, why the braddah at UH, braddah Norm, why he no make some changes. Wen I fix car, if I put in one part and the part defective, I take out the defective part and put in one new one, make the buggah all good again. She can run. The owna happy. How come dis braddah no can see this? Sometimes you gotta change the carbarator, brah. K Den. Shootz!!

    # 25 . . . if it’s so starightforward and if you apprently know more than Coach Chow, then, why aren’t many of us (“you,” a Grease should say) ahead of Chow in doing this job?

Why weren’t criticisers who apparently have this panacea Tread: the solution) for Coach Chow, in all of their criticism, weren’t doing things to enable them to be involved in coaching nd, ultimately, lead college or NFL head coaching for a living? And let’s include those who went a far as they could . . . but, somehow couldn’t handle the next level?

Answer: there IS more to doing this “job.”

  31. NoFansNoPlay October 30, 2012 9:06 am

we need more fans to come out to the games. if there is nobody in the stands then our guys have nothing to play for but themselves and their program. they feel abandoned. it’s disheartening. we also need the fans to come back and fill the seats because how else do you think we are going to get good recruits. nobody wants to come play for a program where the fans don’t even support the team or even show their support. we’re lucking 4 start qb aaron zwahlen decided to give us a look and commit. and still, that commit is not solid or in writing. if he sees there is no support, he might just bail on us and we’re left with nothing but an empty space on a wish list. just because we lose doesn’t mean we give up in believing things aren’t going to turn around. it means we go back out and show stronger support. make signs saying we still believe. with that, the team will take it to heart and play stronger. so i pray people show more support for the school, the program, the coaches, and most importantly the players and future players.

  36. Haleakala October 30, 2012 9:11 am

    Good Morning All!

    Warrior NY:

Mrs. Haleakala was impressed with your interview in the Na Koa website. She is proud that another one of her students is successful and life and society and contributes back to the community that he loves.

BTW, your favorite game with Washington in 2007 was one that we had also attended. That really was the crowning accomplishment for the team. Our tail gate party for the game was next to Kealaoha Pilares Ohana. They were very happy and friendly and gave us some t-shirts. I believe that he was just starting his UH career that year but was already displaying signs of his considerable talent.

Please give our best to your Mom. Mrs. Haleakala remembers her as a very helpful, kind and loving parent.

  41. subdued October 30, 2012 9:33 am

For the inquiry minds on D Bright. Thank you PurpleMaple:

    Bright back after illness

Receiver Darius Bright has been reinstated to the team.

Bright was presumed AWOL when he did not show up for two practices last week. His absence forced the Warriors to scratch him from the travel roster for Saturday’s road game against Colorado State. The Warriors traveled with 62 players (two fewer than the league’s limit) and took only six receivers. Bright was expected to be used mostly in red-zone situations.

Bright and coach Norm Chow met on Monday morning. Bright said he missed those practices because of illness, although that information was not relayed to the coaches.

“He said he was sick, but we never got the word,” Chow said. “He never bothered to tell us. He’s a nice young man who’s very talented. He wants to play, but he has to do the proper things. I feel worse about that than anything else when somebody with so much talent is not (fulfilling) it. He’s really loaded with talent.”

Ohio St and USC, both schools on NCAA sanctions, are in the 2013 recruiting top 10. Tells you that sanctions mean very little. Just a small bump on the road. In this regard the NCAA is failing to create meaningful deterrent to violations.

Good News all you Na Koa members who park at Aiea Elementary.. The pedestrian bridge will be repaired before the Nov. 10, Boise State game.

    Per Mark Takai…

    Aiea Pedestrian Bridge UPDATE!

Work has already started to repair the bridge connecting Aiea Elementary with the Aloha Stadium. Workers are preparing the orignial structure for the installaiton of the 35-foot, 5-ton concrete bridge section, which was knocked down on Oct. 16.

On Thursday night from 9 p.m. until 4 a.m., all freeway on- and off-ramps to Aiea will be closed for the safety of the public and work crews.

Then, during the daytime hours (from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.), the off-ramps to Aiea in both directions will be closed from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. daily while crews install new steel railing on the bridge and perform additional work.

The overpass is anticipated to reopen on Tuesday, Nov. 6 — ELECTION DAY!

Well, all that went down with these schools — a Grease supposes we can add Penn St. while we’re at it (follow a Grease here) — confirmed to a Grease that such schools are willing to do almost anything (read: skirt the rules) in terms of getting BSC-ness, # 1-ness, top 10-ness, great recruits-ness.

Makes you wonder if it’s all planned out ahead, no? School can make millions upon millions. “And if we get caught? What? We don’t play in a bow for a few years. We still got the brand name.”

Reminds a Grease of pharmaceutical companies willing to take the measly fine down the road vs. the mega profits that they, well, earn.

Is what both are doing (if, in fact, that’s what they’re doing) right? Moral?

LBSU womens volleyball isn’t the same LBSU of days past. They’re usually ok, but this year is a down year for them. We creamed them last time we met in Hawaii.

  58. Pauoa Boy October 30, 2012 10:18 am

    PolyMom,

Mariota is a rare breed of athlete. He is going to do big things at Oregon for the next couple years. UH hasn’t only slept on him but pretty much all the St. Louis QB’s, except Timmy Chang. Darnell Arceneaux, Jason Gesser, Jeremiah Masoli, etc… were all local high school guys that barely got a look. St. Louis has always had good QB’s throughout the years but seems like only Timmy of recent years and well now Higgins has played for the home team.

  59. Stephen Tsai October 30, 2012 10:28 am

The Warriors were told they could fly direct from Honolulu to Fresno. But in the AD switch, no arrangements were finalized. So the the team is flying to L A, staying the night, then driving up. After the game they drive to LA, spend the night, then fly home.

    ***************************************

Uhhhh what are you taking about???

In 1998 FVA signed 6 local boys (Chris Brown, Chris Houge, Chris Smith ,Craig Stutzmann, Shawn Withy-Allen, Matt Wright) and had 11 local HS walkons including Ashley Leslie, Lui Fuata, Nate Jackson

This to add to a roster already with locals and polys including Kaulana Koa, Manley Kanoa, Mike Iosua, Bronson Liana,

  61. BigWave96744 October 30, 2012 10:34 am

  65. Kevin October 30, 2012 10:42 am

32-35 is more than 9 or 10 yeah?

Depends on who you ask I guess…

  66. kev-1 October 30, 2012 10:43 am

Darius Bright was stated as being back on the team yesterday. Come on guys, pay attention. 🙂

Grease, what kine nyquil you taking? You do know you’re not supposed to drink the whole bottle, right? BTW, I applied for the HC job, but for some reason, playing Pop Warner and two years high school football wasn’t enough experience. Go figure. That experience only qualifies me for the position of Arm Chair QB. Which I happen to be very good at.

  67. Kevin October 30, 2012 10:44 am

Then again, I think if one was watching and paying attention before.. then should have known how many there was yeah? I myself wasn’t following during that time so I dunno, but according to those that were watching and paying attention den… then they know yeah?

  68. madeinhawaii October 30, 2012 10:45 am

    BigWave…

I may have gotten the exact numbers wrong, but I remember those numbers were low and that we had a thread about in Sportshawaii… I remember counting those numbers as they increased over the years and posting them somewhere in the forum. During JJ’s years… so long ago.

Looking forward to this Fresno game. For some reason, I feel like things might be changing for the better (maybe the “bettor” too).

  72. BigWave96744 October 30, 2012 10:57 am

I figured you must have meant 9-10 local/poly recruits a year, under FVA. That would have made more sense.

Btw left off 2 great guys, Afatia Thompson and Daniel Ho-Ching

  73. madeinhawaii October 30, 2012 10:59 am

    could a would a should a….

Utah State is off to a 5-2 start and is just one game away from being bowl eligible for a second straight year. I think everyone knew the Aggies would be good offensively with Chuckie Keeton and Kerwynn Williams anchoring that side of the ball but the defense has been a surprise to those not familiar with USU. How surprised are you at how good the Aggies’ defense is this year?

It’s been a surprise to see the defense make this big of a jump in just one year. Most people naturally assumed the defense would take a step back with Bobby Wagner graduating and playing in the NFL, but instead of taking a step back they have just gotten deeper and more athletic across the board. Head coach Gary Andersen made his name as a great defensive coordinator at Utah and adding defensive coordinator Dave Aranda from Hawaii has been a great fit. With Aranda on board the defensive game plans have been really sharp and gotten the most out of the talent on the team.

You may not like Fred VonAppen as a coach, but he did recruit some studs that helped JJ in 1999. No way was the cubbard left empty. Add to above Jeff Ulbrich, Adrian Klemm, Brian Smith, Andy Philips, Dustin Owens, Dwight Carter, Dan Robinson , Dee Miller, Matt Elam

If you’re unhappy with SS at QB you should blame Shutter. He would’ve come out of spring ball as the #1. With Graham already on board there wouldn’t be a need for a quick fix in SS.

Imagine if Shutter had called a friend or a taxi this change the QB contorversy would not exist. Our record would be vastly better, attendance would be way up, and there would be no calls for giving Graves or Higgins a chance.

    It’s all Shutter’s fault I tell you.

If Sheldon is reading this…..yes it’s sarcasm.

    #73,

I liked Coach Arandas attention to detail for the defense. That game we played against Navy a few years ago was good indication of his excellent preparation and play-calling for the defense. Glad he and Coach Rolo are doing well in their respective positions. Seems like Utah State has come up as of late, they are a pretty decent football team.

  81. madeinhawaii October 30, 2012 11:41 am

yeah.. Utah now has 7 wins.. but is there a bowl game that they can go to?

  82. A-House October 30, 2012 11:45 am

so, the “wonder blunder” lack of commo even trickles down to making/solidifying flight arrangements for the football team? how sad. I guess people like to sit around and chit chat rather then stand and go ask questions/take the initiative.

and, speaking of UH football, seems more, % wise, were not happy with Donovan at the helm – according to the poll taken by Ward and something.

Back in the 70’s we feared St. Louis. They were a power house through the 80’s and 90’s. But this Mariota is the one who got away. I hope he scores 100 points against USC. Since that BIG MOUTH Matt Barkley said he could have scored 100 points against the Warriors. Let me say this, if that punk could have he would have. There is no love between Norm Chow and Lamo Kiffen. We support Norm Chow. He is a great and decent man.

To the haters, if YOU can produce and develop 4 Heisman winners then do it. Until then support your coaches not drag them down. Hell not like we paying them millions of dollars. UH is so broke. They need a serious angel like Pierre Odemeyer or one of those guys to flush the program and give UH a level playing field. Like I was telling my hub, I wonder if there is a NCAA lawsuit. Hawaii paying all the airfares ect. Heck we are a part of America. But we ate always treated like second class citizens. Just my opinion.

But the Ching Foundatiob is so valuable to Hawaii. Everyone should be thanking them on a daily basis.

  85. Shoko October 30, 2012 12:03 pm

Since Chow still has a residence in Manhatten Beach, staying overnight in L.A. makes more sense for him.

  86. Pauoa Boy October 30, 2012 12:03 pm

    PolyMom,

Yeah I hope they kick USC’s face in. Can’t stand Lane Kiffin and his cockiness nor can I stand Matt Barkley either. Two cocky dudes on the same team, they were meant for each other. Mariota, Thomas, and Barner are a lethal trio for anybody to contain. They are all fast as hell, smart, and tough guys. Aside from our Warrior team the Ducks are an exciting team to watch play, they really know how to light it up. Plus we’ve got a handful of local prospects on that team too…

  87. Shoko October 30, 2012 12:06 pm

Just saw the Chow’s weekly press conference. All I have to say is, “Oh boy!”. Seems he’s getting angrier and angrier. Hope he changes how he projects during those pressers because if he doesn’t he’s going to alianate the fan base even more so.

Haven’t really been paying attention too much with the WAC bowls, but here are three the WAC has tie-ins to.

New Mexico Bowl MWC #4/5 vs PAC #7/WAC

    Hawaii Bowl MWC/WAC vs. CUSA

Was and still a big Amber Kaufman fan and when Emily Hartong was signed I remember some people saying she would end up being more solid all around volleyball player than Kaufman in the middle.

Kaufman was a more “fired up” athlete and showed a lot of emotion and that I liked.

However Hartong for sure has made her own niche and moving to the outside this year was a good move although it probably came out of necessity.

Congrats to her, a very-well deserved honor indeed!

    #6 SAWARRIOR, c’mon man…

Point spread update… line has moved to UH (+34.5) from (+33.5), according to VegasInsider, 55% of ticket volume on Fresno to cover.

    Total = 60.5 (-110)

So if my math is correct, the odds makers predict a 48-13 Fresno win.

  113. Bleed Green and White October 30, 2012 1:38 pm

Sometimes, sometimes I tell you, I just don’t seem to get it.

The continuous badgering, the steady stream of second guessing, the always present arm-chair quarterbacking….

It makes me sick, at the same time it makes my day. I think most of you get what I’m trying to explain.

Sean Schroeder is Norm Chow’s choice as quarterback!

Why is that so damn hard for many you to take? I don’t get it.

Haters, ask yourself one basic question, “Who the heck is he supposed to put in there?”

That question alone should answer a the question itself. There is no answer on the bench. Is Schroeder perfect? By all means no. But he is the best the team does have. Shutter? No. Higgins? No.

And please, do not take this as personal attacks on any of those players, don’t waste my time with that.

For years, so many spoiled Hawaii football fans had and wanted their cake an ate it too.

For years we heard people crying “when are we going to get a local-boy quarterback?”.

Well, we do, Timmy Chang, and he throws for more yards then anybody else, EVER, as in ALL-TIME, yet Hawaii fans booed him too.

Bryant Moniz, kid walked-on and worked as a “pizza delivery guy” while he played, threw for +5, 000 yds and 38 TD’s, and trust me, that kid got very little love from Warrior fans. Saddens me really, because I for one, believe Moniz should have been heavily promoted by UH.

Anyway, back to Norm. It’s his team and his program at the end of the day, let him be be.

I appreciate y’all letting me vent!

  114. Hank October 30, 2012 1:41 pm

#59 That’s a long drive to Fresno from LA and then back. It troubles me that our president was using all that donated money to travel the world ( i.e. 23K to Vietnam and DC) and our football team gotta do stuff like this. Some things just don’t make sense.

You got that right! May Coach Kelly keep Mariota in for the entire game and put up at least 70 points. Can you imagine if they could get that many points or more?

USC fans are so disgusted they want Kiffen fired. Starting to get nasty in my hood. Why? When Kiffen would not let Hawaii have at least a walk through. Seriously? I told my die hard BIL who is a die hard SC fan…sorry can’t come to MY new house. If Hawaii is not invited in your house. Then you not welcome in my house. Yah for real!

Sorry can’t stand that punk Barkley. He could have scored 100 points. Really? As we say at the Bravo network,

I promise you, if they could have scored 100 they would have scored 100. You have no idea about the relationship with Chow and Kiffen. Barkley was in the entire game. I think we played great the second half. USC did not score like the first half. Good adjustments were made at the half.

Let’s face it, we need better talent and we need a better S&A Coach. Wish we had Rocky Seto.

The one thing we should see this weekend is how Edwards stacks up against a good QB and a good WR. Edwards hasn’t really been tested yet (I know we got beat up by USC WRs, but I can’t recall if it was on Edwards or not) – teams have mostly been avoiding his side. If this WR from Fresno is legit, then Edwards will be assigned to him. I’m excited for the match up.

I am hopeful that the defense will continue their new found love of the turnover and will surprise people with their performance.

Call me crazy, but UH wins in the upset of the week 30-27.

    Hey, stop laughing!

  127. kev-1 October 30, 2012 2:38 pm

Boy, that was hard to make that prediction. There is really nothing to suggest that will happen besides my stubborn hope that UH will figure it out.

if fresno beats nevada along with us or nevada (boise’s last two road games) beating boise, fresno has a chance at a co MWC championship.

Yes I think he is. But we need some S&C on our side.

I expect that after this season, we will be losing some players who’s schollies won’t be renewed. To blossom we have to grow. And we have to let Coach Chow have three years doing it HIS way.

I’m with you, we can still dream.

    At least not a 75 spot…

Then again, Brennan & Co put up 68pts @ Fresno in 2006; And Fresno hung 70 on UH in 2004.

But the main difference is there’s no more Pat Hill. He would run the score up on UH when he could. I don’t think DeRuyter has that mentality. The only team they ran it up on was Colorado, and that was a night game on CBSSports (national tv game) vs a Pac 12 team.

#140 interesting comment….i was thinking in terms of Chow’s “pisses me off” comment regarding outside critique of his QB SS. I was somewhat surprised by Chow’s comment in the sense that I would think he would be somewhat immune to such comments given his long tenure in the coaching ranks but perhaps never had to directly address it before since he was never a head coach. Don’t think it was the most constructive answer to give as it kinda puts a damper on further questions, after all who wants to further piss off the coach regarding this apparently sensitive topic.

  149. BaddaMo'oMan October 30, 2012 4:18 pm

    Aloha Everyone,

Thank you for the play by play break on the scrimmage Mr. Tsai.

Great to hear that Trevor Davis and Darius Bright is back in action. Missed both of there presence on the field. Looks like converted linebacker to fullback Vele is getting some touches on the ball as well.

Linebacker Jonathan Makaiau sounds like he’s doing very well and is in beast mode. Hope to see him in action in gamedays soon along with D-lineman Mike Andrade.

While I continue to lick my wounds, I still believe that things will turn for the better in the weeks to come. Coach Chow has gotten his feet wet as a head coach for a Division 1 program and has learned alot under the wings of legendary head coaches over the years as an assistant and coordinator. Although we may be frustrated by the results so far, the best thing for the program is for us, the fans of Hawaii Football to continue to support the coaches and our young men and give them the love and aloha they all desearve for there efforts.

I care and will always care through thick and thin, no matter the situation. I know that most of us are used to the winning ways of the R&S days. But those days are gone and we need to have patience and give coach Chow his opportunity to mold this program into a winning program. If we don’t support him and the program, it makes it that much more difficult for the program to flurish.

AS LONG AS WE CONTINUE TO SHOW SUPPORT, OUR WARRIORS WILL CONTINUE TO GIVE ALL THAT THEY GOT ON THE FIELD FOR YOU AND I, THE FANS AND THE ENTIRE STATE OF HAWAII.

Keep the dream alive and continue to support.

Chow likes to develop a close relationship with his starter. Much like Master Po and Grasshopper or Yoda and Luke. He views himself as much a mentor as well as a coach.

I get the impression Chow feels he can coach Schroeder up to be a success in this system. If he can’t then he feels the failure is his not Schroeder’s.

Funny how Chow won’t make excuses for himself but he will for Schroeder. From # of hits to wrong routes to drops.

    #113 Bleed Green and White,

We are all UH Football fans. We all want our team to win and do well. Regarding Coach Chow’s decision to start Sean Schroeder, I agree that he should be the starter, if Coach Chow believes that he gives us the best chances of winning.

Coach Chow stated in his post game interview, that Sean was hit 20 times during the game. 20 times. He threw 3 interceptions. His pass completion rate was 41%. We won’t win games with a 41% pass completion rate, with a QB that is constantly being hit in the game.

Yes, put Shutter in, or Higgins. They are the back up Quarterbacks. Shutter is more than capable of passing the ball and Higgins as well. Perhaps even better than a 41% pass completion.

This is a football blog. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Arm-chair Quarterbacks as well. UH fans too.

  153. SAWARRIOR October 30, 2012 4:37 pm

    146. F. UH Athlete….playing at home fresneck has scored 37, 69, 52 and 42 points, all wins. Nevada dropped 69 on us in our house without even trying. seventy-five points is not an outrageous score for FSU to drop on us at their house.

fresneck is a much, much tougher team when they play at home. our team will be limping to fresneck, young, battered, travel weary, a HC that will stay the coarse no matter what happens, a DC that hasn’t proven he can scheme to “hold” any decent team to under 47 points (NM and CSU r not decent teams).

FSU has a QB that completes 68% of his passes, for over 2700 yrds, 26 tds and only 5 picks. FSU has a RB with 999 YRDS, 9 tds, 5.12 ypc. a WR with 65 rec for 815yrds,9tds, a total of 7 pass catchers with double digit receptions. it will be a long day for us. 🙁

i hope you’re right and i’m wrong, but our coaches have done nothing to give me any kind of confidence in their abilities to coach up this team. IMO

Ah. There‘s WarriorNY. Glad you seem relatively safe. Nice to see you have enough of a power source to send us a message of your and yours’ status.

That dangling crane’s giving me the willies; hope that’s resolved soon. Way too many exploding/dangling wires. Yeh. We’re seeing it all — a Grease is also watching the late night coverage — TWC, NGN/NHK, CNN, FOX, Fox Business and we are thinking of you and other East Coasters we know, WarriorNY.

Before you know it, you’ll be seeing WARRIORS TRACKING DOWN THAT CHEEEEEEE BULLDOGGIES!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahem. Keep letting us know status, WarriorNY, best to you and yours 😉 .

I had some power flutters here (and me like an idiot forgot to shutdown my work server…) :-/ But other than that, really wasn’t affected…

  183. Pauoa Boy October 30, 2012 6:50 pm

I hope Schroeder’s light bulb gets bright real soon cause this best chance to be successful talk hasn’t been proven yet. 1-6 proves otherwise. Not being able to get the ball in the endzone against a bottom dweller defense in CSU more than enough times on their side of the field??? Okay Coach we hear you now please help Schroeder prove us all wrong. No more bad play-calling, no more bad decisions, no more blaming the receivers, no more blaming the offensive line, just help our boys get their stuff together and finish the rest of the season strong… Feel sorry for the rest of the QB’s on the team who are basically taking up space and will never see playing time this year or next…sad. Schroeder is Coaches guy, so what makes you think Graham takes over for sure next year? Schroeder will have a full season of gametime experience under his belt and is supposedly light years ahead of everyone. I think there will be a few bodies leaving at seasons end…

  184. Pauoa Boy October 30, 2012 6:53 pm

    (#183 – Pauoa Boy)

I kind of get the feeling maybe you’re related to one of the back-up QB’s or something.

    Starters, start, and play.

Back ups wait for their turn.

It’s been that way for a long time.

Acutal playing time, game time, those minutes, snaps, turns, chances are earned in practice.

    I get that.

    I accept that.

For the most part, players accept that.

    I mean, am I wrong?

  187. madeinhawaii October 30, 2012 7:10 pm

If, as Chow suggests, it’s not the QB but the WRs that are running the wrong routes. Who is the WR coach? Blame him.

  192. Moocher October 30, 2012 8:36 pm

Das what I been saying all along…if another qb stepped up I’m sure he’d get the playing time.

nobody making excuses for shroeder. it’s just that some of us can see that shroeder is the best we got and there are multiple breakdowns all over the place so truly, how do you blame him, single out, want to change him, when so many other moving parts are broke?

you change a qb and it doesn’t work no qb will have confidence, shroeder will be worse, the line, receivers, everyone, coaches included will not have any sort of confidence, leadership, or anything else. what, then the same people who want shroeder out gonna say please put shroeder back in???

there has to be a constant, and like it or not it’s shroeder.

these guys dont play for money, they play because of heart and seriously there been so many things said here that will suck the heart out of any player.

if coach is with shroeder, i’m with shroeder…pass it on.

  193. Chicken Grease October 30, 2012 9:00 pm

Like/appreciate the likes of kev-1’s and moocher’s positivity.

If you listen to what Coach Chow says — like in tonight’s ESPN 1420AM’s Call the Coach show — you can hear the sensibility. You know the logic. You get that a strong program is being built.

You don’t hear the type of panic that’s splayed and laid on these boards, on the radio, and elsewhere.

    That’s right. Panic.

Trust in Chow. He knows the stakes more than some of you need to panic about.

  194. Fat Jeff October 30, 2012 9:06 pm

Watching coach Chow talking about the last game I was suddenly hit with a thought.

This is purely my mind running wild, not based on rumor or inside information.

With no AD, turmoil on upper campus, political scutiny of the University, and his plans for the team no producing…I’m beginning to feel like Coach may have decided to finish the season & bow out.

I am not questioning his character, or calling him a quitter. I just speculate the conditions he’s under just don’t work for him and he wants out.

I hope I’m wrong because that would make a bad season into a devistating season.

  195. Bryson October 30, 2012 9:10 pm

Re #187: I can’t buy into the fact that all of the WR’s are running the wrong routes on the same play,if SS is throwing to a reciever who is running the wrong route then shouldn’t be be throwing to the WR’s who are running the correct routes on that play instead? It seems like his problem may be that he tends to focus on One reciever instead of going through his progressions also Coach mentioned about SS being hit 20 times after he threw the ball I didn’t think the oline did a bad job of protecting him this last game could it be SS is holding the ball too long because he’s not going through his progressions?

“You can never blame the quarterback, it’s too easy to blame the quaterback.” Norm Chow in yesterday’s press conference when questioned on Sean Schroders play.

How can Chow say you can never blame the quaterback? It’s the most important position on the field, if not in all of sports! He keeps blaiming the lack of success on the receivers, O Line and even the play calling (i.e. himself). When is there accountability for the QB? In 08 UH had JC transfers starting at QB that had never even practiced with a D1 team and Alexander was able to have much decent success even though the O Line gave a record number of sacks that year. It seems Chow is in denial that he knows better than everyone else and since Schroder is the only QB who is elgible that he directly recruited, replacing him would be an admission he was wrong. He needs to set his ego aside an realize changes need to be made if we’re going to win some games this year.

  199. madeinhawaii October 30, 2012 10:15 pm

Thing is… Chow has at least three years to prove himself right… Four, if he proves himself even half-right.

There was a lot of improvment at CSU….Huge mistakes cost this game…it should have been an easy win….broken coverage, missed assignments, poor choices, dropped pick six….it all added up final should have been 42-14…..that being said the only real negative going into this game is a 3 to four hour bus ride to the game site….that plays a role. I still say we have a chance–just get healthy and make plays—

    Mr. Tsai,

You stated a few days ago “Whether people like Schroeder or not, he’s doing the best of the available quarterbacks in practices.”

Since you offered this assessment, who are the “available quarterbacks” receiving actual reps in practice? Can you share any other details? For example, how many reps are particular backups receiving? A guestimate % would be interesting. And what do you mean by “doing the best.” Reads? Passing accuracy? Thank you!

  212. Shoko October 31, 2012 5:52 am

I would assume, when they say “doing the best” they mean the player with the highest football IQ that is able to run that particular system.

Could be wrong tho, but thats a good question.

  213. Pauoa Boy October 31, 2012 5:56 am

    Bleed Green and White,

It’s not hostility but the fact that I hear what Coach says week to week since the season started. Schroeder is it, than no problem. By saying that though has there been any signs of improvement in the play-calling, decision making, etc… on either Coach Chow or Sean Schroeder’s part? In my opinion I don’t think so, or at least not to the point of Schroeder giving us the best chance to be succesful. C’mon we’re 1-6 already, how many more opportunities we going to give this guy. The defense has improved a little, special teams is on point for the most part, offense…still struggling. I’m not asking for Schroeder to be unseated from the position by no means. He’s the guy for sure but he’s been struggling. Wouldn’t hurt to just give another QB a look for a couple series a quarter a game??? Who knows maybe by observing from the sidelines Schroeder can better see plays develop and understand where he needs to go with the ball or something. I don’t hate the kid, but I would like to see his game improve and mature so I can have a reason to give him props. I just think the other QB’s on the team not being able to get any PT at all is ridiculous. If they are really so horrible during practice then why not get rid of them and bring in whoever the Coach thinks can play. Why have players on the team taking up space? This is why I feel there will be a handful of guys leaving after seasons end. I’m not related to any of the QB’s on the team but I feel for all the players who have given their all to the team yet get shafted for what reason, I haven’t a clue. Don’t get me wrong I believe in Coach Chow getting things right but it just feels that its either his way or the highway…Besides the fact that he can go deep into the roster at every position except QB just makes you think, why not???

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

    #121 Stretch and #113 and BGAW –

Mahalo For your posts. Worst of all are the posters who use multiple names to flame and blame and agree with themselves. BTW – These two guys are at practice when its open. And nobody makes more personal sacrifices as a fan of UH Athletics than Stretch.

    #129 – Aunty Liz and Polymom –

    Thank you too!

We are all disappointed and frustrated as UH fans, but the question is, which is the best way to support the team and program. I’m happy to see so many positive posts coming back. Hang in there Gangeez, we’re all in this together.

Here’s something we can all agree on –

    Pomai –

  216. Da Punchbowl Kid October 31, 2012 6:21 am

    BTW –

We do see a lot of valid points and questions being raised. Nothin’ wrong with that. But repeatedly rippin’ a 21 year old kid or his teammates in a public forum isn’t going to help. Up a point it motivates them, sure, but after that point, it becomes the most counter productive thing you can do.

    Pauoa Boy –

And if someone’s gonna walk down a dark alley late at night, you’re the cousin they’d want to have their back. Mahalo to you braddah, for all you do and and your service to our country.
