Making adjustments

IMAG0104

Allen Sampson can take the heat.

“It’s not bad over here,” Sampson said after completing a 90-minute, mid-day workout in the Manoa heat. “Florida’s weather is way hotter. It’s humid. You sweat a lot. At halftime in high school, I had to put my jersey in the dryer because it was so wet. . . .  I like the wind here. It helps a lot.”

Sampson, who was raised in Tampa Bay, is preparing for his second season at UH.

His first goal is to  increase his weight, which hasn’t been easy during the sweat-inducing workouts.

“I’m eating a lot of rice,” said Sampson, who now weighs 148 pounds. His goal is to reach 150 for the start of training camp in August. He weighed 141 when he first reported to UH last summer.

One thing that has helped is switching from a widely used protein drink.

“For some reason, my stomach couldn’t take it,” said Sampson, who believes he is lactose intolerant. “I actually lost weight from drinking it. I’m drinking different (protein drinks) now.”

He also has found a suitable UnderArmour shoe. Last year, he had difficulty finding one that fit comfortably. He ended up wearing bright-green soccer shoes.

“The green ones were light, but these” — he  points to his new white shoes — “have better traction,” he said.

That has been helpful in running routes at his new position. He was used as a slotback last season. But during spring training he worked out at left wideout. The intent was to give him more options, but now it appears the move might be permanent.

“I feel like a wideout now,” Sampson said. “I feel I can spread the field a little bit more.”

UH baseball fans hope there’s no symbolism in the NCAA tournament field being announced on Memorial Day.

Agreed, moving to wideout is a good move for Allen.

“I feel like a wideout now,” Sampson said. “I feel I can spread the field a little bit more.”

  10. NYUH May 29, 2011 8:01 am

Question: Will we get some serious production from Joe Avery this year? He knows the system, has a quick takeoff, great height, game experience.

  11. Slugger May 29, 2011 8:07 am

    Good morning, gang!

Nice piece on Sampson, ST. A lot of the guys are trying not to lose weight this summer.

    Hi DPK!

I remember being in Orlando, FL in January 1975. The temp was in the 60s. The sun was shining so I thought the pool would be warm. I jumped in.

YIKES! It was so cold! hahaha

    I jumped right out.

  22. Old School Dave May 29, 2011 9:20 am

Looking forward to seeing more of Allen Sampson in 2011. Only a sophomore, he’ll only get better if he continues to work hard at it. As Punchbowl #14 said, the mixed plate at Rainbows DI will bulk you up, and then some.

Back in the day, it was Grace’s Lunch Wagon on Metcalf and University and their chicken cutlet, extra salad, extra rice. Used to inhale those plate lunches. Then they moved to Beretania, my metabolism slowed, had to buy new pants.

  23. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 9:22 am

Hey, Al, hubby says I was a “damn fool to make that stupid bet.”

But, a bet is a bet. Miracles happen. lol.

  24. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 9:26 am

Old school Dave, I never ate those lunches. I always — without fail — brought home lunch (tuna sandwich and an apple) washed down with a Pepsi from the soda machine in Hememway Hall.

    Kinda boring food.

  25. tommui May 29, 2011 9:34 am

    GOOD MORNING FOLKS!

    DPK – up early today?

  26. Pauoa Boy May 29, 2011 9:44 am

Allen Sampson is only 148lbs??? Dayum thats hella light for football even on high school level and probably a good move to keep him outside cause he would get broken in half running across the middle in the slot. It’s not just any protein that he needs to take, he needs to stack on some weight gainer proteins at least 3 times a day with meals. If he’s lactose Muscle Milk CytoGainer is a good protein to take that is pretty much Lactose Free and will surely pack on the weight quickly, but good weight at that. Anyway, I hope he at least fills out to around 175lbs. and maintains his speed!

  27. Derek May 29, 2011 9:59 am

Allen Sampson is one of my favorite players. You have to root for the little guys because they have to prove themselves on the field if they belong. Hopefully, the skill and the will will overcome the physical liability. As they say, dynamite comes from small packages.

  28. SteveM May 29, 2011 10:00 am

Old School Dave — Grace’s Lunch Wagon. “Special mix with pork cutlet and teri-pork”. Didn’t need bigger pants though–not after the new ones I had to buy after my cruise to the orient the summer before UH. 15 lbs. Ouch.

  29. jm2375 May 29, 2011 10:08 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!!

Congrats to Leisha Liilii & Keiki Carlos, both UH commits!! (and congrats to Mr. Quinn, too 😀 )

Trust me, Florida summers are waaaaaaaaaaay worse than our summers. 95 degrees with 95% humidity, no wind, mid-afternoon thunderstorms everyday. It may be hot here in September, but it’s nowhere near what it is in Florida. The rest of the East Coast isn’t much better.

  30. warriorsun May 29, 2011 10:08 am

sampson definitely has wheels and will be dangerous in open space. i hope he can successfully transition to wr where he will be getting more single coverage. some compare him to mike washington, but the two are distinctly different, simularity in size and speed notwithstanding. sampson is a special-package player–use him wisely and he can put a burn on coverage. best wishes to warrior allen sampson.

  31. al May 29, 2011 10:26 am

dpk…you need to get the rainbow drive inn vernacular correctly or the counter girls will mistake you for one tourist.

it’s “mixed plate, gravy all over”

and no forget the chili on the side.

  32. koakane ip4 May 29, 2011 10:39 am

shhhhh no can concentrate on da sermon with all tis talk of fuuuud e/ gravy all.

oh btw wen da next CC

  33. Old School Dave May 29, 2011 10:46 am

Gigi (#25), Steve (#29): Thank god for elastic waistbands! Always found the food in the old UH Campus Center to be ….. “uninspiring.” I think the key with the Grace’s chicken cutlet was the ginger. The taste is still stuck in my mind. I hear that that there are more food options on the Manoa campus now – Da Spot, India Cafe, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell. There used to be a Yummy’s, but I heard that the Campus Center people kicked them out.

  34. Old School Dave May 29, 2011 10:49 am

Heard that former UH Football player, Tyler Tanigawa, long snapper from Kauai, has a lunch wagon on Dilingham Blvd in front of Eki Cyclery. Been meaning to try the food there.

  35. kawika49 May 29, 2011 10:51 am

  37. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 11:07 am

hubby and I are arguing as to where to eat lunch today.

    Tanaka’s saimin?

    Haleiwa Joe’s in Kaneohe?

    Cholo’s in Haleiwa?

    any other suggestions?

  38. kawika49 May 29, 2011 11:10 am

    #37 Anna Bananas?

  39. al May 29, 2011 11:10 am

    shrimp truck…roadside in kahuku. giovanni’s.

rosie’s cantina mo bettah then cholo’s.

finish with matsumoto store shave ice.

  40. al May 29, 2011 11:12 am

i seen you there eating the pineapple/peanut butter pizza and pitchers of beer.

kuhio grill? (gawd i miss that place)

  41. kawika49 May 29, 2011 11:22 am

#41 Still have school tickets for Kuhio Grill.

  42. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 11:25 am

eh, we decided to dine at Tanaka Saimin.

Saimin combo with teri beef stick and shrimp tempura.

  43. jm2375 May 29, 2011 11:55 am

dpk & homey – hubby decided to watch GOT from the beginning – marathon!

  44. orioles foreva May 29, 2011 11:57 am

I loved Grace’s teri pork plate with extra salad and sauce on the rice, for less than two bucks. What a deal.

  45. kawika49 May 29, 2011 12:10 pm

Torii’s lunch stand mixed plate! If you never went there, you don’t know what you missed.

  46. Kaimuki Kid May 29, 2011 12:16 pm

I miss the teri beef sandwiches from Elsie’s in Kaimuki where Okata Bento is now located and the Okazu from Aotani’s a couple doors Diamond Head…

  47. Stephen Tsai May 29, 2011 12:22 pm

    Old School Dave:

Is that the portable pizza place?

  48. Stephen Tsai May 29, 2011 12:25 pm

There used to be a really good place in Kailua — Kailua Bar-BQ and Okazuya.

Run by a really nice guy.

And then one day … Esme-and-woosh.

It was kind of like those spooky movies. “Food place? There hasn’t been a food place here in 20 years …”

  49. SteveM May 29, 2011 12:29 pm

kawika49 — was Torii’s the plate lunch shop on Sheridan Street, around where the Wal-Mart is now?

  50. kawika49 May 29, 2011 12:30 pm

You got it…All the mail carriers went here.

  51. SteveM May 29, 2011 12:31 pm

    ST — I still miss Andy’s Drive Inn. I lived in Kailua until 9th grade… errr, early ’60’s 🙂

  52. Stephen Tsai May 29, 2011 12:33 pm

    SteveM

Aren’t you currently in … the early 60s?

  53. SteveM May 29, 2011 12:35 pm

    ST — what a coincidence, huh? 😆

  54. d1shima May 29, 2011 12:35 pm

    Did Devon make it?

  55. d1shima May 29, 2011 12:37 pm

Masu’s MASSIVE Plate Lunch (formerly known as Livingston Food Service)

  56. d1shima May 29, 2011 12:38 pm

    Vienna Sausage

    …Tita-style!

  57. Stephen Tsai May 29, 2011 12:42 pm

    d1:

One of my former coworkers, Brandon Masuoka, used to help out at Masu’s. It was his uncle’s place .I think they named an outrageous, er, high-protein meal after the legendary Ferd Borsch (who once ate 100 oysters in a sitting).

That certainly out-did the 20 jalapenos I had at yesterday’s brunch with the brightly attired Stretch.

  58. d1shima May 29, 2011 12:45 pm

I prolly could recall seeing Brandon. Remember his cousins working there in the summer. The brother is a friend of our owner.

Sample of one of their legendary specials:

    David Daniel’s Yuletide Bento

A baked baby lobster tail stuffed with crab and bacon, charcoal broiled sirloin steak, teriyaki sauce, fried chicken, a heavy slab of baked Spam, shrimp tempura, two shoyu hot dogs and crab potato salad made with real crab meat.

  59. Old School Dave May 29, 2011 12:51 pm

ST: No, the portable (oven) pizza place used to be on N. King Street next to the broom factory. I think they moved to Kapiolani Blvd across from 24 fitness (?).

  60. Stephen Tsai May 29, 2011 12:54 pm

    d1:

    I’m getting hungry.

  61. d1shima May 29, 2011 12:57 pm

Not as massive, but still ono

    Tsukenjo Lunch House

  62. d1shima May 29, 2011 12:57 pm

Did your “greyshirt” get “lei’d” today?

  63. coqui poke May 29, 2011 1:23 pm

    Old School Dave,

Tyler Tanigawa used to have that lunchwagon and the food was ONO.

His new undertaking is an ono salad dressing, Tani’s, that can be found at Don Quoite’s and soon, Times Market.

  64. al May 29, 2011 1:23 pm

what about the lunch house located next to torii store?

good friend’s mama ran that one. best hamburger steak n onions.

later when the land was bought out she retired. couldn’t stand staying home and bought the old l and l dairy drive inn in liliha. after awhile she got tired doing it with her eldest son and they sold to a guy named flores.

yah, flores made it a national chain now.

  65. al May 29, 2011 1:26 pm

masu’s massive lunches started on makaloa street near the walmart. lease problems forced a move and he took over the old honda delicatessen also on liliha street.

great memories of paul masuoka’s massive lunches.

i still have his shoyu chicken recipe. its a brok mout ono preparation.

paul came from a chef’s background.

  66. Old School Dave May 29, 2011 1:27 pm

#64 Coqui Poke: Thanks for the update on Tyler Tanigawa. I also heard that his salad dressing was also good. Good for him. Oh well, no shortage of ono lunch wagons around town.

  67. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 1:38 pm

hey, I’m back from Tanaka Saimin. Will post pics in my blog tomorrow.

Meanwhile, let me tell you their special and combo are very good. That’s what hubby and I had. Great shrimp tempura!

  68. d1shima (Aria'd) May 29, 2011 1:38 pm

Lunch wagon proliferation now that get Health Dept. Inspector shortage.

  69. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 1:38 pm

the old Weyerhauser bldg is unrecognizable. so much better now that there are windows instead of solid concrete walls.

  70. d1shima (Aria'd) May 29, 2011 1:40 pm

But somehow, da fuud mo ono! 😉

  71. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 1:40 pm

hubby applied for a job at Weyerhauser twice and was rejected.

good thing because the company went out of business years ago and hubby would have been unemployed.

    things happen for a reason.

  72. d1shima (Aria'd) May 29, 2011 1:41 pm

Weyerhauser never had anything to show!

  73. d1shima (Aria'd) May 29, 2011 1:42 pm

  74. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 1:43 pm

d1, you played sports? which one?

  75. SteveM May 29, 2011 1:46 pm

    RE: #65

Al — was the eldest son a Japanese Tsai-ko size guy? If so, he introduced the teriyaki add-on sauce for the L&L burgers at the time.

I never met Flores, but his partner and family took over Liliha L&L. One day I ordered a mixed plate and discovered I didn’t have my wallet. He gave me the plate and said to pay him later. Nice guy. I used to make his take-out menu’s on my Mac in those days in exchange for dinner… 🙂

  76. d1shima (Aria'd) May 29, 2011 1:57 pm

  82. Kaimuki Kid May 29, 2011 4:53 pm

Torii’s moved to Sumner Street across the old Del Monte Cannery in the 70’s before closing up. always ate there when I didn’t like what was served at the Del Monte Cafeteria during summer cannery work. If I remember correctly, Torii’s was located where the HMSA building is now

  83. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 4:58 pm

Hubby and I are going to dine at Paesano tomorrow. We’ve already tried the Manoa branch and will try the Waimalu branch tomorrow. Love Italian cuisine.

  84. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 5:03 pm

Anybody tried Assaggio’s Ala Moana this year?

When we ate there last year, it was just awful. No vegetables on the plate and the pasta was sticky and dry.

Hopefully, they have a better chef now.

  90. papajoe2 May 29, 2011 8:33 pm

Watching the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards on tv. Its sad because after 6 1/2 years of retirement, I listen to K105 and they still playing the same music that I used to listen to when I was working for 28 years. Now, watching the Na Hoku, I don’t know too much about the newer performers or their songs although they remake a lot of the older songs.

  91. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 8:36 pm

does anybody bother to watch those ads that appear on this blog screen?

    very annoying!

I don’t bother to watch and just close it.

  92. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 8:39 pm

JASON, we went to the new Salt Lake Chinese Restaurant and weren’t that impressed.

The decor is nice with table cloths and plants, but the chow mein was really bland, and the duck spring rolls lacked veggies.

The only great dish was the house special sizzling platter! Wow! It was seasoned just right and delicious!

    Probably won’t be back.

  93. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc May 29, 2011 9:01 pm

What does GOT stand for? See Nos. 44 & 87 above

Anyone here going on the Trip To Asia with the men’s basketball team?

  94. kawika49 May 29, 2011 9:08 pm

    GOT=Game of Thrones

  95. Da Punchbowl Kid May 29, 2011 9:09 pm

    Doc –

“Game of Thrones”, is an excellent show on HBO. Need to watch episodes in sequence (see HBO on demand) for for utmost enjoyment.

  96. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 9:18 pm

HBO — hubby prefers BluRay instead of TV movies. Better and sharper video.

    yeah, he’s spoiled.

  97. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc May 29, 2011 9:27 pm

    Mahalo for the information.

We only have basic Oceanic tv service. Our bill just hit over $130 this month for basic cable service plus Roadrunner so we will not be upgrading anytime soon until the prices come down. If they don’t, then we’ll just have to do without premium tv programming.

We need to line up some places to go to watch the away footlball games this coming season. Any ideas? The problem I have with most bars is that the audio is turned down so it’s almost impossible to get a sense of what’s going on. Who does the radio broadcasts on the road?

  98. SteveM May 29, 2011 9:32 pm

    99?

  99. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 9:35 pm

    WDoc,

ST mentioned that Oceanic is going to have a UH TV channel for UH sports.

Hopefully, the monthly charge for it will be nominal for all viewers. How does $5 sound per household (wishful thinking)!

    Stay tuned for details.

  100. jm2375 May 29, 2011 9:48 pm

DPK – re GOT, so, once again, didja see it coming? 😯

  101. LizKauai -iPad May 29, 2011 9:56 pm

Gigi- having Oceanic in charge of the UH broadcasts sucks for us satellite users. There oughta be a way for them to provide service to all- as part of the local channel package.

  102. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 10:06 pm

Liz, if K5 would acquire HD capability, I think UH would hire them to broadcast UH sports like before.

Why K5 doesn’t do that, I don’t know. No money? who knows!

  103. d1shima May 29, 2011 10:17 pm

If it makes dollar$ it makes cents…

  104. papajoe2 May 29, 2011 10:21 pm

Na Hoku Hanohano pau. BRING ON SOME FOOTBALL!!!!

  105. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 10:27 pm

Tomorrow’s a holiday and we can sleep late if we want to.

    Let’s blog!

But, first, I really should wash the dishes.

  106. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc May 29, 2011 10:39 pm

Re the Oceanic Time Warner sports channel: We have season tickets for all six ticketed sports plus we go to as many softball games as our schedules permit. It wouldn’t make any sense to pay for something we wouldn’t use.

Besides, I like the company of other fans watching away games so we’ll just bring along a radio with earphones to get some idea as to what it is we’re seeing on tv. Who’ll be on the radio team – Bobby Curran and ?????

What is Game of Thrones about? Is it fantasy? Sci-Fi?

  107. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 10:48 pm

    Robert Kekaula and Bobby Curran

  108. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 29, 2011 10:50 pm

    probably Camellia, eh?

  112. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 10:57 pm

    hubby has a $5 bet with a co-worker.

hubby bet that miami will win it all.

he said I should have done the same instead of making a “stupid bet”.

  113. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 11:01 pm

but I have a sneaky suspicion that Dirk will surprise – yes, shock – everybody.

I love the way he throws the ball with 1 leg in the air or back pedaling.

and he can dunk the ball just like Wade and LeBron, no problem.

  114. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 11:02 pm

    anyway, DALLAS IN SEVEN.

  115. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 29, 2011 11:11 pm

isn’t it Bobby Curran and Robert K.?

  116. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 11:14 pm

    yeah Robert Kekaula does color.

isn’t there a few seconds delay for the TV broadcast, though?

Radio and TV aren’t in sync.

  117. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 29, 2011 11:17 pm

why do they call it color commentary?

  118. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 11:20 pm

supposed to be insight commentary. tidbits.

  120. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 29, 2011 11:24 pm

yeah but why color? i don’t understand the color part?

why not just call it insight commentary

  121. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 11:26 pm

    maybe your dad will know.

    lol

  122. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 29, 2011 11:27 pm

    no dice.

but i figure the sports gurus on this board would know.

  123. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 11:28 pm

    anybody can help?

  124. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 29, 2011 11:29 pm

    google can’t even help me.

  125. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 29, 2011 11:31 pm

so lets talk BCS and MWC and the direction of the WAC.

  126. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 11:37 pm

well, the MWC will not get a bid to the BCS.

Lost too many teams. They need more teams. Added 4.

Now the WAC lost all the good teams. Bringing in inferior teams.

  127. DaMenehune May 29, 2011 11:41 pm

125 Try wikipedia. Good answer there.

  128. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 11:46 pm

I don’t know why this is, but aside from UH sports, I really don’t pay attention to other colleges unless they play UH.

I prefer pro sports like the NFL or the NBA.

    Don’t follow baseball or softball.

There is just too much to watch and I am too busy to watch t hem all.

  129. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 29, 2011 11:51 pm

I think MWC gets the 2 year AQ status…primarily because the Big East had to get the same exemption a few years back.

I think they are fine at 10, unless BYU comes back into the picture. Then it makes sense to go to 12 and a CCG.

The WAC seems to be on a slowly sinking ship. Although the Texas schools coming in kinda intrigue me. Both of them are being coached by some big name coaches. Dennis Franchione and Larry Cocker.

  130. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 11:53 pm

Isn’t Wyoming part of the MWC? Elevation is supposed to be really high.

almost impossible for us to play at that level.

  131. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 11:55 pm

ok, so is Dad back on the blog?

    lol

    big change in diction.

  132. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 29, 2011 11:57 pm

Dad? My father doesn’t doodle with blogs and such.

  133. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 29, 2011 11:59 pm

Well considering we played Wyoming in the past when they were WAC, I am sure we will manage.

  134. gigi-hawaii May 29, 2011 11:59 pm

no way to argue about that.

  135. iwonderwhytheyhateme May 30, 2011 12:02 am

I am more so hoping that MWC will allow us to play a 8 game conference schedule instead of 9.

That way we will have more options for OOC games and will help teams like AF.

  136. gigi-hawaii May 30, 2011 12:10 am

If we can play more military academies more often, that would be a plus.

I always wondered why that wasn’t the case.

Ohio State “encouraged” their football coach to resign. Looks like Ohio State will avoid an expensive buyout for his megabucks contract.

Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel, who met with coaches and players this morning to announce his resignation, was encouraged to resign, sources told The Dispatch today.

Tressel’s contract was renewed last spring through 2014. He earns about $3.7 million annually in salary and other incentives.

Got an opportunity to watch the 60 Minutes special on Medal of Honor winner SSG Salvatore Giunta of the 173d Airborne for his actions in Afghanistan. I had complete admiration for a fine individual who was honest, unassuming, and had insightful perspectives on what it meant to be a soldier. He was STRAC in every way. The 5-star hotels and fine dining was not for him, he just wanted to be back with his buddies doing what he was trained for. His story made my day. It was gratifying to know that America has quality individuals still being produced and not just snotty kids who feel entitled by doting parents.

Good morning everyone! Wishes for a wonderful and meaningful Memorial Day to all!

    Freedom is not free.

    Taps

    Taps

    Day is done,

    gone the sun,

    From the hills,

    from the lake,

    From the skies.

    All is well,

    safely rest,

    God is nigh.

    Go to sleep,

    peaceful sleep,

    May the soldier

    or sailor,

    God keep.

    On the land

    or the deep,

    Safe in sleep.

    Love, good night,

    Must thou go,

    When the day,

    And the night

    Need thee so?

    All is well.

    Speedeth all

    To their rest.

    Fades the light;

    And afar

    Goeth day,

    And the stars

    Shineth bright,

    Fare thee well;

    Day has gone,

    Night is on.

    Thanks and praise,

    For our days,

    ‘Neath the sun,

    Neath the stars,

    ‘Neath the sky,

    As we go,

    This we know,

    God is nigh.

  157. BG May 30, 2011 8:12 am

    gg#137

Take a step back and look at the geography. Army and Navy are on the East Coast. It’s disruptive during the season to travel that many time zones…not just for the immediate game but for the game thereafter. Air Force is ok geographically, but they belong to the MWC and being in a conference limits the number of OOC games available each year. Out of the 5 (typically) OOC games each year, AF must play Army and Navy and has a traditional game with Notre Dame. It’s not a slam dunk for JD to schedule the military academies.

  158. BG May 30, 2011 8:15 am

Thanks CoolEthan…I do not know another combination of simple notes that touches the soul as does “Taps”…it’s nice to see the lyrics from time to time.

  159. gigi-hawaii May 30, 2011 8:17 am

BG, where there is a will, there is a way, I think. JD could schedule one of the academies for when we are already on the mainland for a different game, and then schedule a bye week after the academy game.

    Not impossible.

  160. BG May 30, 2011 8:18 am

Gonna hit the books for an hour or two and then go outside and enjoy the special day. bbl

  161. BG May 30, 2011 8:25 am

Never said it was impossible, gg. Just pointing out why it’s not easy. JD has already said why they would like NOT to consider east coast games. Once teams are in conference play, they do not like to schedule OOC games instead of taking a bye which means that OOC games are typically at the beginning of schedules or at the end…which also limits access to teams. You need to get all the facts.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
