Yep, the word on the boulevard was true. So adjust your lineup cards for these football coaching changes:
• Nick Rolovich will be the offensive coordinator in charge of quarterbacks.
• Ron Lee will be the assistant offensive coordinator working mostly with the receivers.
• Dave Aranda will be the defensive coordinator in charge of linebackers.
• Cal Lee will be the assistant head coach in charge of defensive ends.
• Tony Tuioti will be an assistant coach in charge of defensive tackles.
• George Lumpkin has been recommended as the director of player personnel (a positioned funded by Na Koa).
As part of the established pay ranges set by the Board of Regents, Rolovich, Aranda and Tuioti will receive pay raises.

Several years ago, the NBA figured out that it takes a minimum of 0.3 seconds to catch an inbounds pass and shoot.
In that vein, I would love for the math geniuses — Jason? — to get together and come up with a formula in which a trailing team cannot catch up by fouling. I bring this up because Duke is up by eight, and Baylor keeps fouling. And that’s how a great sport like basketball takes five minutes to play the final 40 seconds. There has to be a mathematical point where it really is over before it’s over.

I posted at 12:09, but it showed 11:47 p.m. Sunday. Being 22 minutes off is really weird. So I adjusted the clock/date, but that made the post disappear.
I think the move, especially with our Coordinators is a good call. I think most people knew that last season there was one defacto Offensive Coordinator and that person was Rolovich. I hope the rumors are true and he is getting credit this year for the hard work he put in last year.
Titles are important, especially in China where the right titles gets you respect. I have to admit that all these titles, co-this, associate-that makes for pretty sounding titles. What they equate to on the field will keep us guessing.
Any idea why George Lumpkin is rumored to “demoted” to the personnel position?
Hmm…I like the thought of having Coach Rolo as the OC, I just hope he opens up the offense more and stop playing so conservative at times. This offense is built to score and score often. We will throw…well then toss that pigskin in the endzone all day, everyday…punish teams early and often and don’t let up trying to coast into a win. Frikk if we win by 50, so be it, cannot stand playing conservative ball especially when we got playmakers all over the field. Put teams away and continue the arse whoopin until the whistle at the end of the 4th quarter…

Actually, I like Lumpkin at that position.
The guy is super organized and he’s pretty good at evaluating talent. You can be assured Lumpkin will do a good job with follow-ups.
Sorry, I’m not a big basketball fan. I was never chosen for basketball games as a kid (was told as a basketball player, I made a great linebacker). But when I do tune into basketball games, I usually watch the last 3-5 minutes….for the very reason ST notes above. 😆
But there is one basketball team I like to watch from start to finish…the Harlem Globetrotters. 🙂

I like him in that position too. I think he has had his time in the coaching position for so many years that he has the “institutional” knowledge of sorts to eye good talent.
Change can be good, I have a good feeling that this rumored change will be what we need to have a better season.
Also I to am wondering why Coach Cal isn’t staying with the Linebackers??? I also hope Coach Ron goes back to being the primary wide receiver Coach too. I mean from Ashley Lelie, to Chad Owens, to Davone Bess, I’m pretty sure he could turn a couple more guys into NFL draft picks…Salas, Bradley, Pilares???

HB 2625 has nothing to do with the University of Hawai`i – it “Clarifies various provisions of the condominium property regime law.”
I did a search using the term Cancer Center and found no bill listed in this biennium which cancels its construction. In fact, one bill being heard tomorrow at 6 pm before the House Finance Committee increases the amount of money going into that fund from proposed additional taxes on cigarettes.
Tomorrow morning the Senate Ways and Means Committee will consider HB 2200 HD1 which is the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year which begins July 1, 2010.
In it, there are two CIP budgetary allocations for Ching Field and the Women’s locker room facilities upgrades (approximately $9 million combined) and an additional $11+ million for Aloha Stadium.
RE THE FOULS: Cannot understand why that is SOP when a team is down five or six points. Being fouled is one thing, but giving someone a chance to make 1/2/3 points makes no sense.
Interesting March Madness for me so far. Picked all 32/16/8 teams and 3 out of 4 playing next Saturday. Don’t want to bachi my favorite by posting its name here.

Looking over the Spring Rosters, I see a lot of new faces and names. I like the size of the Oline though and am curious to see what we will look like with the incoming Oline recruits. If Coach Mack is saying the Pearl City kid could be a 4yr. starter, he must be pretty mean.
Plus I was thinking, who was Umu at first and where this guy came from. Anyway, I hope he’s mean and nasty on the Dline. I’m expecting big things from my man Paipai and if the other end is just as good, aww man its gonna be nawts this year.
So I’m thinking Marcus Malepeai must’ve bulked up if he’s put down as a defensive tackle. I thought he would make a pretty good end…
So I was cruising around Yuma the other day and saw some of the AWC football boys hanging out. I know we got a couple guys we was trying to recruit that went the JC route and we sure have a handful down at AWC. I know Coach Mack was saying that we are no longer going to be the second chance school but I sure hope we can get some of our local boys back in the Warrior Green Uniform. If I seen correctly, Jesse Williams is frikkin huge!

As for the discussion at the end of the last blog. If one writes a check to the UH foundation or any other booster organization, if you write on the check it self (you know down where it says comments) where you want that money to go, it has to go there and nowhere else period.
Pauoa it just makes thing easier, players have to only listen to one guy for getting the plays, no discussion on what plays to call, so on.
True…always a problem when got too many Chiefs and not enough Indians. I think Coach Rolo will have full control but Coach Ron is there to help him out in the transition until he’s ready to take the reigns for good.
Why foul when down 8 points? Watch “Winning Time” – the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary on Reggie Miller and the NY Knicks and see how quickly 8 points can be scored. And even if you don’t have Reggie Miller on your team, if fouling works even 1 out of 10 times you gotta give it a try, especially when it’s the last game of the season. or in a senior’s case, the last game of your career.

I think being off coordinator is more than just calling plays. Ron Lee is a great film guy and he knows the RnS better than most people. He should remain involved with scheming and scouting and all the other OC responsibilities for at least another year, if not longer.

Re-Makeover
As Coach Mack alluded to on the recent Call the Coach Show he wants to put the coaches where they are the most beneficial to the team.
How these purported moves plays out is anyone’s guess.
My guess is that it’ll turn into a disaster. Am I being cynical? Yep.
But then, again, it takes a track record of following someones moves, especially Coach Mack’s, that perpetuates someone into being cynical.
Putting it bluntly Coach Mack has laid many scratch your head type of moves, that I don’t see the purported ones being announced today as being any different.
Basically what this team needed, and this may come as being ironic, was a good defensive line coach.
If there was a 1-800 number in asking-a-football guru that knows UH football I would have called many times in confirming to myself of what I perceive is wrong and suspect with the team.
For my sanity I would want answers to questions. Expert type answers. I would even pay the $5.00 (gulp) a minute charge. I would ask questions that others are silently thinking, but are afraid to ask.
One dying question is this: if the defensive line coach, Aranda, and I can’t see why everyone is clamoring all over him, coached the defensive linemen, whose techniques suffer in my opinion then what does one see in making him the defensive coordinator?
Is it an aberration that the tackles and ends are coming upright out of their stances too quickly and hesitate? And are slow to react? No it’s not. It reverts back to coaching. It reverts back to Aranda.
In the Army isn’t it true you don’t become a colonel unless you can prove yourself as a major, right? Then why didn’t this hold true with Aranda.
The answer, I think, is that in Coach Mack’s book it’s made up of fairy tales and everyone is bigger than life. I mean, just listening to the coach on his show…seemingly, his assistants and players have big futures ahead of them. There are suitors around every corner. The NFL will be calling his players. His young assistants are rising stars and will become head coaches someday.
In fact, Coach Mack has said that Aranda is a rising star. We will see. We will see if the NFL will be calling his players. But then again he’s been off more times than he’s been right (so far). Last year wasn’t he the one that said his two LB had NFL futures? And his DE this past year was a second rounder?
How Aranda moving to DC plays out will be interesting to watch. Three things can happen. Applaud. Laugh. Or cry. We will see. There’s a lot on the line. The snakes in the pit, too, meaning the other assistants coaches and some observers and fans, will be watching…and hissing.

If the LB’s are making the calls on the field then it makes sense for the DC to be coaching that position. If the HC lets the DC really call the defense then it really makes sense….

Actually, I like the idea of seeing what Aranda can do with the LBs. I hope to see Brashton in there, solidifying the middle & having someone experienced calling the plays. Right now, everything is just speculation. I want Kiffin & USC to be surprised & stunned when they find out what they got into at Aloha Stadium. With Kiffin’s ego, there’s no way he’s taking UH seriously after the Wisconsin game.

I like Lumpkin in his new position. He will do well there. Cal Lee LOVES coaching ‘backers, so the jury is out on how well he will sit with the move. I’m guessing he’s fine with it because D-Ends are crucial to our success and we got a few newbies at that position.

Kiffin does have a huge ego, but he’ll be taking the UH game seriously. It’ll be his first game, it’s on TV and he’ll be looking to make a statement. UH will keep it close in the first half, but the speed and talent differential will be too much and USC won’t let the foot off the pedal.

Coaching Changes –
Let’s start on defense. Not too much of a change on defense with Dave Arana as D.C., fact is, he pretty carried that work load all of last season anyway. Think back to the Navy game, now THAT, was some defense gang. It was “simple” in plan and VERY well executed.
To me, there in lies the problem.
KEEP it simple gang. In my opinion, that’s the biggest problem the program faces right now. Sometimes, and many of the players have voiced this off the field….but sometimes, the defensive game plans and philosophies are over complicated, too much thinking and NOT enough reacting. BAD formula.
SIMPLIFY!
Aranda comes across as a “cerebral” type, know what you’re working with coach, understand the kids, understand the culture. PLEASE!
Offense under Nick Rolovich, well, I’m excited about that. To me, Ron Lee was not “committed” to the offense. Too many times it was a little of this and a little of that.
Run-and-shoot, the highly successfull June Jones version of it any way, well, to be successful the O.C. has to be 100% committed. Offense under Lee was not.
With “Rolo”, he’s committed, all in, I know that. However, the head coach is a defensive guy, let us all not forget that…
Will he get out of the way of his own offense?

I like Cal coaching DEs. Mack wanted more out of those positions. Hopefully it works out. To me the most interesting change will be Tuioti at DL.
Provided the interior of the offensive line remains true through all Spring, Fall and the USC kickoff, the run game looks to be a key element the staff wants to focus on this season. Having TWO 6’6″ monsters inside would help that cause.
Brett Leonard has been touted to have good feet movement and can “pull”, can A. Thomas do so also? We shall see!!!

I would think it would have way too many factors involved in trying to figure out how much time is needed to make up 8 points in basketball.
You have to assume that the team being fouled makes all it’s free throws and the team fouling makes all its three pointers. You have to assume that it takes a certain amount of time to take the three pointer and also assume how long it takes to foul a person on an inbound pass. You have to also assume the teams have no timeouts to advance the ball. So long story short, there are way too many assumptions to figure it out.
If you assume 5 seconds to make a three pointer and 1 second to foul, then a team can tie the score in 48 seconds. Assuming they make 8 three pointers in a row and the other team makes all their free throws. They could do it a lot faster if they make all their three pointers and the other team misses.
my only concern with the two 6’6″ guys on the inside is the 5’10” qb’s.

What is the difference between an “assistant head coach” and an “associate head coach”?

I believe there is a difference between a local player who chooses to go away and a player who must go away. Jesse Williams is a good example as he really wanted to play for UH, but his papers were not in order and had to go away. Versus Wade Kalelikipi who chose UH but decommited to sign with a PAC 10 school. The playeers you identified, I believe, were is Jesse Williams’ situation – they did not qualify out of high school to play for UH.
I believe Coach Mack will take them back in a heart beat!

According to the UH pay scale, the chain of command is head coach, then associate head coach. It gets fuzzy whether an assistant head coach is higher than a coordinator.
Sounds like our on-line department, where everybody has a cool title.
cal and ron lee will forever be revered as coaches who greatly impacted football in hawaii during their tenure at the university and at the high school levels.
it is too bad that they didn’t get a legit shot at coordinating the defense and offense. from day one mack’s interference was evident and last year even the two cents of other asst coaches clouded the issues even further.
to their credit and till today the two local boys remained local and have not made any disparaging comments in light of the obvious slights.
you can see the large tire marks on the backs of their shirts. i am just wondering if they were from robert’s hawaii or the city & council vehicles of public transportation?
My take on game day for the offense:
1. In the sky box: Rolo and Smith.
2. On the sidelines: Ron Lee; Shaw; and Inoke.
Inoke to relay the plays to the QB & interact with the QB’s.
Ron Lee to coach the WR’s & input to Rolo.
Shaw to coach the OL’s & input to Rolo.
Big question: Who’s going to really manage the game? Mac or whoever is the loudest, as in the last 2 seasons.
i thought rolo mentioned that his preference is to be on the field communicating to his qb’s and wr’s.
i think ron prefers the booth.
i do agree that game management needs vast improvement. we need a change here perhaps….tormey.

Some great coaches used to be bench jockeys. might not have had the talent to be first team but were students of the game and became very good coaches. Aranda did some great game planning last year and hopefully we get better this year. measure his work at the end of the season. if it don’t work out then time to get a new coach.
Coach Ron did a tremedous job with the receivers and I hope he can duplicate the results seeing that we have a better receiving corp this year.
Oline being rebuilt with some size, Dline stocked with some good potential. The kids need to make it happen. Coached can teach the best technique, give you the opportunity to put it on the field. Ultimately, its the execution and who has the most desire to make it happen.
We’ve all seen this happen time and again. Supposedly inferior teams play and beat better talented teams. When you play with passion and intensity, good things can happen. Watch for the “Beast” to see what it’s all about.
Not sure if I’m cynical or it’s just the Monday blues, but I don’t expect a lot from Mack and his boys this year. I’m expecting another 7-7 season. Win some, lose some. Nothing spectacular.
And doesn’t the Beast have to sit out this season?
There is a point where fouling will not win a game but it is done in the hopes that the team shooting the ball will miss the front end or both to allow for catchup. Baylor tried it but Duke was deadly. It’s been a while since UH has had a good free throw percentage. Amazing how most teams/players do not pay much attention to this. For a player, you don’t need team work outs to improve on this. All you go to do is get your butt down to the court and shoot till you hit 10 in a row and start over again.
The “Beast” wil sit out this year but he will be out there “cracking coconuts” in practice and the first team better be ready.
Is it better to be up top to watch a play unfold or is it bettter to be field level?

For me, I would be worried that my pay is depending on an organization reliant on donations, especially when the head of the organization recently resigned.
Given the pay raises for Rolo, Arranda, and Tony, did anyone have to take a pay cut?
And with Lump being recommended as director of player personnel. This is the recruitment coordinator position right?
Kind of an aside….but also related. Does anybody find it potentially troubling that aside from Lump, we don’t have any Black coaches? It is no secret that some of our best players are Black. If I’m a recruit coming out of high school, that might be something I or my parents would see. Just a thought.

whew, monday…..but it’s 43.5 hours from SPRING BALL…..and mahalo for the kind words on ‘the beast’, yes he is sitting out because of NCAA rules on the transfer, but he’s loving it…..he has never had a year ‘off’ just to train. this year, hopefully he’ll be banging on the Scout team against the 1’s every day, and in 367 days he’ll be battling to crack the rotation. that’s why he wanted to come in the Spring semester……

No doubt though that one can see the plays unfold from the higher levels though. BUT for one thing, I don’t wanna die when the rust bucket gives way, and the second thing is, it’s like watching the game on another planet. Yes you have people like the A-Houses and Midori screaming their heads off for the Warriors, but then you have the majority probably calling security on them for making noise….

Sounds like some good changes. I think Rolovich deserves the raise…I felt he deserved that title/raise last year too but thats ok at least its finally been addressed.
Lets say that the Na Koa position is cut due to lack of funds….what happens to Lumpkin?…is there another spot on the staff for him?
so does the brothers lee take a pay cut because of the demotions?
or did we just increase the overall football coaches salary budget?

I hope that the changes help the team on the field. Congratulations to the 3 people who are getting raises and condolences to those who are having cuts in pay and title. Unless the pool of money for assistants has increased significantly, it would appear that every increase has to be balanced by a decrease.

I thought it was already reported that Gib was getting a 3-year, $240k per year deal.
I’m not sure whether or not there is a way to conclude that Ron Lee or Rolo is more committed to the run-and-shoot. It should be pointed out that Mack already announced that UH would run the run-and-shoot 75% of the time and they would use other offenses for 25% of the time. So, no matter how committed the offensive coordinator is to the run-and-shoot, *UH* will be not as committed to it as they were last year.
Hopefully the new wrinkles will pan out. Hopefully the reduced reps for the run-and-shoot in practice (while the other offensive system is worked on) does not reduce the effectiveness of the offense. I still have bad memories of Spring 2008 where UH spent all that time with the QB under center when there was no established starter at QB comfortable within the offense…
I think Mack’s decision to change coaching assignments was a business decision. He needed to assess which coaches were the we can’t lose type versus the we won’t lose type. The pressure to win in football like the pressure to make a profit in business drives many of those decisions. I do feel bad about the Lee brothers position but I have to back Mack’s decision on this one.

also, the gibber contract has not yet been executed. the public is being told that the contract will be similar to nash’s 240k. i am thinking that he will get a bit more with a ton of incentive clauses.
i think part of the agreement also provided for an increased recruiting budget as well as a broader range of pay for the assistants.
anyway, i think it was a canary that flew by the window.
One of the things that bites me is the fact that UH’s runs their offense slowly. They should speed it up and try to run more plays. Instead of having the QB come to the sidelines to get the play from Rolovich on every play, send the plays in w/ a receiver or use hand signals. Rarely do I see UH run a hurry up offense. And save the QB some energy. Play calling shouldn’t be that difficult because calls are predicated by down and distance. By game time, Rolovich should know what are the best plays to run for the team based on practices. And also the best players to run those plays. This is why Boise St. is so good. They have player groups in which certain players are in on certain plays because they are very good at it based on repeated repetition in practice.
Also, I think Rolovich should have 2, maybe 3 special plays for each game. Example, Boise St. ran a fake punt on 4th down against UH and they completed a pass for a big gainer and a first down. Now, don’t you think Boise St. knew that the play would work? Of coure they knew. They studied the films.
And, what’s up w/ the basketball team? No news, nothing for the last 3 or 4 days?
Did you notice? 1) Brad Stevens, Bulter’s coach is only 33 years old. Won’t be 34 until October. 2) Two teams, Michigan St. and West Virginia lost their starting point guard and they’re in the final four. Unbelievable. What depth! 3) Baylor was robbed. An offensive call by Acey results in losinng at least 2 and maybe 3 points when they were up by 1 or 2 and Zoubec would have fouled out earlier. If the call stood Baylor would have been up 4, maybe 5 points w/ less than 5 minutes to go. Replay showed that it was a bad call and even the announcers and analysts alluded to it. I really believe that if that call stood Baylor would have won that game. 4) Dick Vitale says on TV that you can turnaround a team w/ 4 players (is Gib Arnold listening?) 5) Butler’s 2 best players-Gordon Hayword and Shelvin Mack are both sophomores. They are loaded for the next couple years. Make ready for Hoosier 2. The real Hoosiers. 6) Who will be this year’s Joey Chitwood? Mack, Smith, Lucious, or DeSean Butler? Lucious and Butler already hit buzzer beaters before.

Some visiting fans mention that our softball outfield is pretty short. Some on the mainland are 210 feet and I think I saw some at 220 feet, while ours is an even 200 feet.
It’s a moot point most of the time when the homers some of our girls hit have bounced HARD off that black net at 205 feet. There have been a handful that could have been in the park homers or triples if our outfield were larger but again, moot point.

Howzit, yeah you right about the boys not being able to get there stuff in order to play for UH. I know Lopati and Williams didn’t qualify. I was surprised to see how many local boys are on the AWC team though, got a handful and I believe most if not all either start or get significant playing time. They are tops in their division for JC football. I didn’t know Umu and Leong-Choi went to AWC too. But they have sent alot of guys to D1 schools. A couple in our conference too, Idaho, Boise St. and Fresno St. got a couple AWC guys on their team.
Anyway, ST do you know which of our Warrior Boys past or present are going to be attending the Pro Day this year??? I know “Nasti” Nate Ilaoa is trying again, but who else besides obvious guys like Estes?
A random thought about the reassignment of coaching duties as it relates to [former] Assistant HC Lumpkin and his upcoming salary…
Given that he has 30-plus years of service (combining his two stints on staff at UH) in the state system, maybe he’ll be taking his pension from the state, which would alleviate the need for a full salary from Na Koa funds?
Someone put this 2 foot tall black and white and green-spotted stuffed easter bunny behind my desk at work. For some reason it’s holding a carrot with a COW inside of it as if the cow is wearing a carrot costume. What the hell happened to Easter as I used to know it?

Thought about your post. My impressions and observations of the way the communications system was set up all told me it was messed up. Please realize that my opinion may have very little correlation to reality. I find myself making way too many assumptions on this matter and I was always taught that “assumptions” were the slippery slope to disaster.
I thought that Mack had way too many people inputting to the guy who had to make the offensive/defensive decisions…including himself. Never was the saying truer, “too many cooks …..” I believe that people who have to make decisions on the fly in high pressure situations know that after a certain threshold, additional input only degrades the decision making process. The time for input is BEFORE the game when the plans are drawn up. After that, the head coach should be the only person to make changes to the game plan except for rare instances when another coach may notice something of significance. If a HC starts spending too much time micro-managing on the lower levels, he’ll surely lose control of the nuances of the game situation. JMO

I meant to say too…because to the importance of communications between the QB, WR, and running back in the R&S, Rolo needs to be there on the sideline to get immediate feedback from the skill positions to help his future decisions. Someone else gathering that information and then interpreting before relaying to Rolo just has too many variables not to mention a time element. Also, as I stated in #129, I just don’t think it’s a good idea to have so many people inputting to the OC

Many OC’s rely on their own observations from the Coaches’ Box to adjust their play-calling during a game. As Al mentioned earlier The Former Coach was one of the rare ones who could do it from field level. It comes down to competency of the OC and trust from the HC….
Interesting changes… Kind of disappointed that Na Koa let go of Don … but .. the only certainty will always be “change.”

Ebay is addictive.. like stocks .. but short term.. You buy low.. sell low… win some lose some.. trick is to squeeze out a little profit out of each with minimal time invested. I’m selling used camera gear. The main thing is to get the listing titles and subtitles right and to take nice, flattering pictures. The content or description is really not as important for most items as buyers with the bucks already know what they are looking for.

For anyone that’s followed the Wahine softball team’s games this season, this should come as no surprise as Hawaii opponents Troy, DePaul, and recently San Jose State have been victims of this.

I resigned for personal reasons, period.
I am still involved and I will continue to donate to Na Koa; my donations go to the endowment so I know where it will be spent: on the players via football scholarships.
Anyone wants to have a ‘talk story’ session meet me at West Point at the tailgate, Las Vegas for the in-between game week fundraiser at the CAL, and/or at the Boulder game tailgate. All of these will be fundraisers for Warrior Football and I will be part of it.
It will still be personal reasons but at least we will get to talk about what’s important: Warrior players on the field, then, now, future.

The bill is SB2695, the annual money-grab of “excess balance” from special and revolving funds. A hearing is going on at this moment. I didn’t bother to look for the House version of the bill. It’s easier, for both legislature and governor, to raid special funds instead of making tough budget decisions.

The most intriguing part about this move is Tony T. I see inexperience and with the leash on Coach Mack shorter than it was when he took over at the helm and it might get shorter if he doesn’t deliver, is this a wise move on his part promoting a “fairly” inexperience DL coach to coach what was our weakness on defense last year which is the run? Or was the problem depth, athletes, etc? Only time will tell what the answer to these questions.

Barring a complete collapse, I’m sure it’s Moniz’s position to lose. He grasped so much of the O in such a short time, I can’t see him being complacent & he should improve even more if protection from the O-Line is there. It’s going to be an early test-of-fire w/ the USC pass-rush, though. I’d love it if they started off with a couple of power running plays up the gut just to catch them by surprise! Then revert back to their normal R-and-S on.. Even Kiffin, Sr. wouldn’t know what was going
