Mahalo

Thank you.

As the host of this reader-driven blog, I am humbled, overwhelmed and extremely grateful for the incredible support. Our readers represent the best Hawai‘i has to offer.

That was apparent during last night’s second anniversary party, which was coordinated and produced entirely by our readers. With our open-door policy, we had close to 200 folks (although only Curtis Murayama, Princess Leila, Curtis Lum, Leslie Kawamoto, brother Mike, Kortney Borthwick, Corie Soto, Tia Ward and Liane Yim were the only Advertiser folks in the house.)

A big mahalo to the Hawai‘i State Legislature for the thoughtful proclamation in honor of the blog and blog readers. The full text is No. 273 in the Comments section.

Special thanks to yesterday’s guests — Rep. Mark Takai, Manoa chancellor Virginia Hinshaw, UH athletic director Jim Donovan, head coach Greg McMackin, associate athletic director John McNamara, Sheraton Hawai‘i Bowl executive director David Matlin, Stan Sheriff Center manager Rich Sheriff, and sportscasters Robert Kekaula and Jim Leahey.

A heart-felt thanks to Keith and Bonnie Amemiya, Walter Howard of Papa John’s PIzza, John Repetti of Boyd Gaming, author Lance Tominaga, Kahai Street Kitchen, the Blog Bash Committee members, All-Star Musicians and the Workshop Elves.

Roll the credits for:

Colt Brennan called. He said he received full medical clearance from the hip specialist in Colorado. He will be ready to participate in all of the drills when the Washington Redskins’ training camp opens.

Former McKinley High athlete Earvin Sione, who signed a letter of intent to play football for UH, said he also will play volleyball. Sione is 6 feet 5 — and growing. He will play wideout or safety in football, and middle blocker in volleyball. Here’s a very blurry photo of him playing basketball at UH (no, basketball is not an option for him):

What’d Devon do? You used more than just first and last name; that’s usually not a good thing…

…and the party continues at genji’s, some 30-40 tsaiko’s gathered after the party. nabeyaki udon was the hot seller and those came later missed out as the kitchen sold out on their most popular dish.

those guys are still there, finished dining by now they must be passing the mike along.

yah, i was there too along with duffer and son with homey in tow. the maui contingent had an early flight (0530) to catch in the morning. so, as there host i took them back to waikiki. oh but, not after the crafty stevem cornered me with his mike.

sorry if i scared some off as this was the first time i sang outside of shower in a public place. yikes. sorry if i broke some eardrums.

well, i am sure the gang is still there.

needless to say it was one awesome party tonight. i believe i got to meet the half of the room that i never met before. it was fun and now we all can say we have at least 140 friends.

  7. Koauka July 11, 2008 1:19 am

Best wishes to all friends of the Warrior Beat. The upcoming third year will be special.

ST, next time when you see the boss for your review make sure you take your Hawaii State Legislature Proclamation and tell the boss, “hey do you have one of these?”

The boss has no beef with you, gurans!

Now back to make sure nothing crashes in the harbor.

  8. al July 11, 2008 1:24 am

oops…..of course i meant whitey and not homey.

  9. Pomai July 11, 2008 1:25 am

Dang sounds like you guys had a blast. I hope that the “Haka” makes it on youtube, that would be worth the time to download on dialup. LOL Maybe you should have recorded the whole bash, then sell the DVD’s for NoKoa, that would be a money maker.

  10. Mike July 11, 2008 1:29 am

No haka on YouTube. Repeat: No haka on YouTube.

Sad. We almost has Mrs. Mack in the troupe, but we lost her in practice after the first chest claw.

    Which bakery baked the cake?

  17. gigi-hawaii © July 11, 2008 2:00 am

Well, I am going to brush my teeth and head for bed. It’s been a long day.

    G’nite, folks.

  18. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 11, 2008 2:19 am

So the party continued on while the rest of us stayed behind to clean up the mess left by everyoneat Geji’s? Franksabunch!!

In approximately 13 hours, the bids for the Ching/Cooke Field renovations will be opened. Because a number of things have to be checked out before the bid is actually awarded, the only thing to be announced Friday afternoon will be the lowest bid. The final decision should be announced by the end of the month and work will begin shortly thereafter. First step – getting all the permits lined up.

There will a major celebration when the field is dedicated. More on the date as the work proceeds.

We’ll process the HI-5 cans from the party over the weekend and will match the amount paid by the recyclers as a donation to Na Koa. Quick estimate is about $40 in redeemables. Lotta thirsty folks there tonight.

Great meeting people who’d only been blognames up until now. Interesting that one of them looks enough like a certain O`ahu elected official to be his twin – except the Tsaiko must be at least six inches shorter. When I saw him tonight I went over to say hello but as I got closer, I realized that he wasn’t who I thought he was.

First person to guess BOTH people will win something really nice – a $50 gift certificate to a restaurant of the winner’s choice.

    Off to bed –

  19. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 11, 2008 2:21 am

    Whoops!!!

    everyoneat Geji’s = everyone at Genji’s

GIGI: The cake was half chocolate, half yellow cake. Had a piece from each side.

  20. al July 11, 2008 2:27 am

yup. nice cake. pride has some connection with the procurement.

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs,

Thanks for a great time. For Blog Dogs who were not able to attend, Bulla’s rendition of the Tsaiko culture was really unique…this buggah could run for guv!? Not an inarticulate one in the bunch, to say the least. The grand prize was given to everyone because you got to meet so many like minded people. This was like an AA meeting where we confessed our passion for Warrior Beat!!

Thanks for the great door prize I won…Life time season tickets on the 50 yard line sky box!!!??? Really, all the prizes were very good. As ST said he was humbled by the gathering. I was amazed how this blog has grown since our first fest two years ago.

Tsaiko Blog Dogs unite! Go Warriors!

  45. Bulla July 11, 2008 6:50 am

to all the Tsaikos who were at UH last night,

mahalo for making memories, mahalo for being you, mahalo for being a part of history.

a truly memorable night for all. annodah dave, mahalo for the kind words, but i learned a long time ago, if you speak the truth, if you speak from your heart, and if you are passionate, then everyone will understand your message.

what a crowd, what a collection of UH fans from every walk of life. talking with Jim Donovan and his ever so lovely bride Tracy, what a class couple. Coach Mac and his wife, another great team.

good to see former UH athletes in the crowd including Pono Maa, Lisa Strand Maa, Keith AhYuen, Mark Takai, of course Jim Donovan, and others whom I cannot remember their names.

Mahalo again….humbled by everyone last night.

    Imua Warriors

  46. Kazz July 11, 2008 6:54 am

    Good morning to all.

A-House, good to hear you representing the Ohana on L&L this morning!!!

    ST, no. THANK YOU!

Another BEEEGGG “mahalo” to all those that made last night’s festivites a reality!

  47. Bulla July 11, 2008 6:55 am

    Tsaikos abound,

If you can make the next annual Bash, you gotta come….it will rival any other event you have attended. Be a part of history in the making.

I will go on a limb and say, correct me if I am wrong ST, there in all likelihood is no other blog such as The Warrior Beat and The Tsaikos. When was the last time a sportswriter, and his ‘blog’ received a proclamation from the State legislative body? hmmmmm, makes you wonder.

i think, whenever you can get government, the university (both managerial and athletic department) and THE PEOPLE (that’s the fans) working TOGETHER, then you will find success. it is a difficult formula to mix, but if you come close to bringing all the ingredients together, everything else is magical.

  48. Bulla July 11, 2008 6:59 am

    Mahalo to the committee,

to the Tsaikos that put in the long hours of planning and coordinating, mahalo. the night was everything i expected and more. mahalo to rich sheriff and his staff at the Stan Sheriff arena, great job, what a collaboration between everyone.

ST, mahalo again…..still can’t put my finger on it, but you got something good going on, congratulations!

Coach Mac said it all, ‘there are 2 people i trust in the media, ST and Kekaula, they do their job professionally, but they also protect the university!’

    awesome night

  49. bighilofan2 July 11, 2008 7:04 am

    bulla,
    thanks for the report.

    Capitol-ist/WassupDoc,

  50. opala man July 11, 2008 7:08 am

    funny,

i saw a lot of people cleaning up last night, folding chairs and cleaning tables. in less than 25 minutes the room was tip top. the most time was spent collecting all of the memorabilia on the table and getting it to their rightful owner.

mahalo to da doc for carrying the load and mr doc for being her right hand man.

  51. Bulla July 11, 2008 7:10 am

    bhf2,

bruddah, dis wuz da one…..da big one…..man, i cannot begin to tell you how heartwarming da bash was. a lot of hard work, but it all paid off.

ST, he’s the real deal, gave the props to his bride and his family….straight from the heart…..love it when people are real.

To all the speakers, unreal job…….collectively, this group is very, very talented. and we have so many wannabe comedians, haha.

just joking, but have a good day.

  52. Bulla July 11, 2008 7:11 am

    d1

hope you’re feeling better; your bride looked very lovely last night with her million dollar smile. or was that because she was looking at you? haha

I am so dang jealous of all of you that went to the bash last night. And, I am so happy that it was a humongous success (what else would anyone expect of a Tsai-ko event?).

Maybe next year I will be back in earlier July for the 3rd Bash. Yahoo! And, yes, I am already anticipating it.

    GG . . .

Thank you for the photos. Looks like the food and friends were great!

  66. Stretch July 11, 2008 7:39 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

I hope everyone enjoyed themselves last night. Many times during the night, I kept looking out at the group and thinking, “this is amazing”. I wish I could have stayed home this morning to take care of a small headache.

  67. tom mui July 11, 2008 7:39 am

    What a party!

Wife Lois had a great time associating what had been names with faces!

(One aside = Stretch’s mother who was present, is Lois’ frat sister – same honorary teaching fraternity and chapter)

Great talks by all, especially by the ever eloquent Bulla and Jim Leahy.

Thanks goes to Rep. Mark Takai for his presentation from both the Senate and House.

And it was great to see the Ha’a, the recognition given to us by the presences of Chancellor Hinshaw, Jim Donovan and his lovely wife Tracy, Coach Mac and his family, Kekaula and everyone else.

And of course really the honors goes to Stephen and his wife Wena!

And a big mahalo for the organization of the blog party – thanks for making it happen!

  68. Loa July 11, 2008 7:42 am

  69. Da Punchbowl Kid July 11, 2008 7:46 am

    Wadda party!

In addition to the many VIPs, we also had the Three Stooges passin’ out the door prizes! 😆 Seriously, big Mahalo’s to all of those who made such an incredible event possible.

I really enjoyed Mr. Leahey’s remarks, all of the speakers were impressive. Coach Mack and family are some very nice, down to earth people.

It’s always neat to see the Tsaikos together, so many people who are so different from each other, yet such good friends. ST, this is an awesome legacy you have, here’s to many more years of this blog!

  70. Da Punchbowl Kid July 11, 2008 7:53 am

    ATTENTION!!!

Did anyone happen to find a white gold (silver looking) hoop earring at the party site last night. Sweety lost one of her favorite ear rings as we were leaving. If you found it, please let me know here. There is a small reward. 🙂

  71. bighilofan2 July 11, 2008 7:54 am

    Re: Raffle
All the money collected from the additional ticket sales goes to Na Koa football. I am proud to announce that we have $1044 just from raffle tickets. There is more to be donated to Na Koa through the other sales but need to finalize all costs first. I will make an annoucement of total donations shortly. Thanks for everyone’s generousity.

Good news from “Ferd” this morning about the anticipated contract with ESPN and the WAC.
It’s a very tangible result of Hawaii’s 12-0 season (and Boise’s run the previous year) and a good reminder for all about the stakes involved with supporting the team’s on-going success.

    wafan,
Yeah, I guess I used too much lighter fluid. Luckily for me, the fire was out in the Valley, which is on the eastside of town. I live on the westside of town. So far I think 13 homes burned down. Luckily no one I know had a house burn down. The fire dept was very busy yesterday with fires all over town. The windstorm didn’t help matters either.

While my wife and I were chatting with Coach Mack, he mentioned that he loved the black Tsaiko shirts we were wearing. Perhaps the Tsaikos can make shirts for him and his lovely wife, Heather.

  83. Kekoa July 11, 2008 8:34 am

    Goooood Morning Tsaiko Ohana!

Wow!…what can I say. From the time I walked in the SSC and saw all of the crew working together at setting up the room and erecting posters, signs and notices of the night to come…to the time I walked out with my family, I felt so proud to be a Tsaiko.

I thought I could express it all in my speech, but there was so much to say and so little time to say it. Thank goodness Papa Leahy and Bulla came along to put things in much better perspective than I.

Papa Leahy had some rather unflattering things to say about Frazier the fumbler, and made us all laugh so hard it hurt in at least five different places! Yet, in all that he did say about us, I’ll always remember the passionate way he described us as a force to reckon with.

He also described how he had a book he was reading that was 600 some odd pages thick. Then, he decided to read the blog. He was amazed to find that our blog was over 600 pages more to read! Imagine him asking if we had a life! How could so many people spend so much time on this blog, he asked?

I think he was most impressed with the content. The information, and opinions. The sorrow expressed when one of us is down sick or having an emotional crisis to deal with at home. The joy on one’s birthday or graduation. The celebration of life that goes on daily on our little corner of the world.

For all these things, I am thankful. I truly appreciate the people that helped me put this party together. There may have been some problems at times, but you all helped me work it out. When we meet again next week for our ‘after action’ report, we can focus on what worked well, as well as what didn’t. It will help us plan an even better one next year.

    Happy Anniversary Tsaiko Ohana!
    Kekoa & Klan

  85. SteveM July 11, 2008 8:35 am

Good morning folks. Liz should have landed on Kauai by now and I’m just catching up with the blog. I have a lot of questions but will wait till I wake up again 🙂

Great party last night and as usual, I lost track of time and didn’t get to meet everyone again–it’s getting harder each Blog Party. At Blog Party 2, Peaches was mad that I “just left her and went to meet Al, Wreck, James, etc.”. Last night, when I walked in the door, I didn’t know where to go first…Tsai-ko Disneyland! I did it again–Peaches caught up with me later, gave me name tag and stuff, and wasn’t disturbed at all as she sat with the Jaeger Bombers 😐

Great tribute to ST! Please post a photo of the Proclamation.

  86. Bulla July 11, 2008 8:44 am

    tom mui

mahalo for the kind words, i am humbled by this group’s comments. it is always an honor for me to speak on behalf of The Tsaikos.

koakane was funny introducing me, when he saw my notes, he said, ‘wow, you get notes?’ i no mo nothing…

as i told koakane, ‘whenever i am asked to speak, think of the 3 P’s….Prepare, Plan and Project…and tonight is a very big night for all of us Tsaikos. in the spirit of excellence, and nothing less, that is part of being a Tsaiko’.

koakane looked at me with his Mel Torme smile, ‘yah, whatevahs you bomboocha….’

    what a guy 🙂

  87. Stretch July 11, 2008 8:45 am

We still have some Tsaiko glassware available for those who were not able to purchase some last night. When I get home later today, I will post the inventory. For those interested, email me at tsaikoparty at yahoo and let me know which you are interested. See attached site to view different glasses.

  89. wafan July 11, 2008 8:58 am

Interesting how WA and HI differ in their semantics. Here a Resolution may be passed by the House/Senate and a Proclomation only by the Governor. Looks like in Hawai’i the House/Senate my pass a Proclamation and the Governor a Resolution (?).

  95. KL July 11, 2008 9:03 am

Congratulations Stephen Tsai on the second aniversary of your exceedingly successful blog and the organization of the Super Hawaii Fan organization the “Tsaikos”!! You and your Tsaikos have become one of the most influential forces in Hawaii sports, if not the community because all are well informed, well intentioned, and passionate about what they believe in. You have done an un believable job of nurturing the group, knowing when to respond, support or, occasionally, chastise. All sense your integrity and love of Hawaii sports and people in general (except those that try to screw you, then watch out!). Keep up the good work.

Pretty please? With sugar on it?

  99. duffer July 11, 2008 9:03 am

    Good Morning Tsai-kos!

A BIG MAHALO to the organizers of the party last night. AWESOME job!!!

One of the highlights for me was meeting Homey, without his “hashi” and Esme, who I didn’t get to hear sing at Genji’s. Weren’t the ‘Tizer staff excluded from winning prizes? This lady is a bundle of energy.

Another was ST’s “speech” and all the accolades heaped on him by all the speakers. You’re not dying ST, but isn’t it nice to be alive and present at your “wake”?

    OK!, back to lurking!

  100. g-nalo July 11, 2008 9:03 am

    good morning everybods.

just want to express my mahalo’s too, simply put…….thanks EVERYONE.

no question Bulla, these ARE good memories.

if i may add to what Stretch said in #66, yep looking out in the crowd you can just feel the comraderie, amazing stuff.

congratulations to ST and ALL the Tsaiko’s, you guys make it happen.

    Yes — a Kauai resident.

  105. wafan July 11, 2008 9:11 am

    Mr. Tsai . . .

Does not matter. I am always interested in the power of the spoken and written word. That is why I was interested in learning that WA and HI differ in how Resolutions and Proclamations are done in both states.

Both the resolution and proclamation have a lot of “whereas” and one “therefore”. I personally find them funny to read — such an old language style in a modern society. It would be easier to read if they just said, “Here is what so-and-so did” then say, “So, today we are honoring him/her/them.”

Have to admit, though, it is a thrill to receive one of those things!

    Congratulations, Mr. Tsai!!!

  106. g-nalo July 11, 2008 9:13 am

    speaking of James…

Is it almost time to put out da APB for him and the Minister of Alcohol, koakane?

but you must admit Koakana IS a good beer ‘taster’, very thorough. 🙂

Alewa Heights can be a maze after a party hearty night?

  107. g-nalo July 11, 2008 9:14 am

SteveM – didn’t get a chance to say hello but just so you know, i wore the shirt proudly. haaaa

stretch, on the other hand, is amazing. how he can get two hours of sleep and be on the 5 o’clock to lihue is just amazing. then, again like his mom told me last night that she wonders if actually does anything at his job.

um, so, good morning mrs. ichi nice to have met you btw. i know you are lurking. its time my dear. time to make your first post today.

Happy Friday Tsaikos & Tsaikettes –

Sounds like a great time last night. ST called me this morning and mentioned that the party was a success beyond his wildest expectations. It’s all due to the incredible folks who have found an escape to “Tsaikoland”. (The theme park is already being planned!). I’m still blown away by meeting all of you two weeks ago and am humbled by the love and aloha by all.

Anyway, I’ve been super busy with work since returning to L.A. I’m hoping to get back on the blog soon and re-connect with everyone. I owe a few of you emails….please be patient.

    Best always,
    Rich

  118. d1shima July 11, 2008 9:33 am

Any chance we can get a transcript of Bulla’s speech?

Evidently one source you can rule out would be koakane.
(going keep mentioning his name til the itchy itchy ear wake him up. heheheh)

  119. d1shima July 11, 2008 9:35 am

    jm2375,
He’d have to remove it from its frame first and risk violating his union contract.

    Oh wait, there isn’t one!
    Never mind.

  120. sjmacro July 11, 2008 9:36 am

Great morning after Tsaikos ❗ ST I got the ha’a. My battery was on the way down too, so hooked up to AC. Will get a disk of pics for your review in a day or two. Meanwhile, some teaser pics may be up on my web album later today.
Ditto ST’s mahalo to all who contnue to make this blog a unique community. 😀
WDoc, don’t begrudge the Genji crowd. I know for a fact that everyone of them worked long hours in weeks before. Then they were there at 1 PM set up, plus taking care of out of town Tsaikos. They deserve a break.
BHF2, we definitely missed you. Will try to fill in with the web album pics. Koakane has your banner
Aloha & Mahalo to the TSAIKOS—-sjmacro & myki

    Aloha Tsai-kos!

Just wanted to drop in and congratulate everyone on this great blog.

Congrats and thanks to you, Stephen, for starting this site and allowing all of us to play here.

    Here’s to number 3! 🙂

  123. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2008 9:40 am

    SJ
I echo your comments. Everyone worked really hard. There were some who spent the past four Sundays rehearsing for a performance they couldn’t give because of time constraints. You know, this is one of those times when you say, thanks to everyone, and really, it was a great effort put on by everyone.

  124. LizKauai [Believer] July 11, 2008 9:43 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Well, I was able to validate my highest priority “I wonder” question last night.
    ahem.

Cabaret is indeed an Arabian mare. 15 hands and probably Polish and Egyptian breeding. I hope Heather is reading this and fills in the pedigree back to horses I remember from 20 years ago

    oh yeah…
    ST said no videos….
but when I saw Wena with her camera out…. waaaaal….
my extra memory card and battery…. shall we say… came in very handy 😆

Mahalo to all who prepared, executed and put the blog party to sleep til next year.
It was an event whose future recreation should be announced asap so that Tsai-kos can plan their vacations now.

    HiHo!

  125. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2008 9:44 am

I’m kind of bummed that The Tizer leaders didn’t bother to acknowledge the party. It really was a tribute to the paper, too. Oh, well. I guess there was an important Super Ferry meeting or maybe they were focusing on the new iPhone.

Glad to see that the sports editor showed up!

Nephew Brandon Nakanelua ~ Still high on meeting so many of his heroes last night. (Only guy I know that has a ring tone on his cell phone of Papa Leahy making a classic Warrior TD call).

There wasn’t enough time to do a lot of things that a lot of peeps wanted to do last night.
I know you mentioned to me a couple of times while we were cleaning up (along with a bunch of others, btw) that you regretted some weren’t able to perform but really, speaking for myself, getting together on the ceded lands was a reward in itself that I take as a part of the amalgam that is the Blog Party memories.

Sorry if Garret or someone else already mentioned this but,
looks like two Kahuku alums will be suited up in Corvallis when the Warriors show up.

strong safety Al Afalava is suspended for the season-opener against Stanford due to a February DUI

On the upside, it appears that guard Jeremy Perry, who sat out spring practices following knee surgery — after missing nearly all of 2007 with a broken leg — will be ready to play this fall. Perry, when healthy, might be the Pac-10’s best guard.

But it looks like SLS alum will be watching…

Offensive tackle Tavita Thompson is expected to regain his eligibility by the Nov. 1 game against Arizona State. Thompson was ruled ineligible by the NCAA after starting seven games last year. The reasoning was never officially explained by OSU officials because of privacy rules.

  153. gigi-hawaii © July 11, 2008 10:42 am

Liz, how can? After they took away all the trays to clean up the area, they left behind 4-5 plates of chicken stix.

  154. LizKauai [Believer] July 11, 2008 10:49 am

gigi- I got a few of the chix stx after da noodles, etc. all was yummy!

  157. gigi-hawaii © July 11, 2008 10:59 am

yep, the food was delicious! I liked the watermelon, which was refreshing.

Drank Stella Artois for the 1st time. And around the time the party was winding down, there was STILL beer left! Unbelievable for a Tsaiko party.

  158. LizKauai [Believer] July 11, 2008 11:07 am

    ‘k

I put Bulla’s oratory on my blog (click my name) and will put up some albums of pix and whatever  laters.

Mahalo to all the folks who worked so hard putting together last night’s event. Perhaps we can do it again sometime?

We finally left the SSC – according to the car clock – at 10:59 pm and, after a quick stop for gas, pulled into the driveway about 11:35 pm after deciding to skip stopping by the Hungry Lion or one of the Z’s for a late dinner because we both had to be up and on the road by 6:30 am. Glad to see that many of the folks who stayed behind to help with the cleanup were able to get to Genji’s for the post=party – hopefully in in time to get something to eat.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

Thanks, Liz. Love the reference to “Gigi’s muumuus.” Geez.

  161. MeiLing July 11, 2008 11:12 am

Glad to hear that Colt is cleared to play full out.

Kanaka ~ Coach Corey Batoon responded that Ikaika Mahoe is coming back to Hawai’i, but he didn’t know whether he was going to continue playing ball.

  162. LizKauai [Believer] July 11, 2008 11:16 am

KL- mahalo for dropping in! Missed you last night!

  163. Ronnie July 11, 2008 11:18 am

    Wow, Bulla!!! That is awesome!

Thanks, Liz for posting Bulla’s speech. I can’t wait to see all the pictures and videos that come to light ;D I’m glad everyone had such a great time – and the number of walk-ons (keeping with the football terms) for the event is just outstanding!

  164. Ronnie July 11, 2008 11:19 am

    oops.. ;D s/b 😀

  165. checkraze July 11, 2008 11:20 am

1st post… Another recent tsai-ko convert (Jack Flash) told me about the party and convinced me to come. Just wanted to say thanks for the fun, food, beer (and all of Mrs. Bulla’s jager) not to mention the Tsai-ko salad bowl (which I have officially converted into the tailgate poke bowl).

Great to meet all of you regulars and bonafide Tsai-kos not to mention the VIP’s (special shoutout to Coach Mack for not just letting me see the Sugar Bowl ring but explaining in person and in depth)

Thanks again… Congrats on the proclamation and anniversary to “the man, the myth, the legend”

    cya guys around…

p.s. hadn’t registered as of last night so FYI checkraze = kai

  166. MeiLing July 11, 2008 11:20 am

  167. WreckinEyez July 11, 2008 11:25 am

Great to meet all the Tsaikos last night… So much going on…

Bulla and the Koakane tag team was the greatest… Lots of hidden jokes in the writeup… My jaw was floored when I heard some of the stuff, but in true Tsaiko fasion… many of them were inside jokes.

Thanks to the every one who helped and everyone that came. I can honestly say that your bash committee members busted their butts. Along with all the other helpers who endured late nights and short weekends.

    Mahalo to all and everyone… and… a…

🙂 Onarock… you went read the books yet or what?… 🙂

  168. al July 11, 2008 11:26 am

oh. and one of the highlights for me was to finally getting to meet esme. i told my blog son, jason, he had a very nice blog mom.

so then jason and i tried to persuade her to take her blog family to the football in which she had just won four box seat tickets.

funny. she never answered us. perhaps she thought we were joking???

and in the aw shucks dept, i was hoping to hear her sing but perhaps that will be for another time. but, hey, thanks esme for the laughs and you are nicer in person!!!!

  169. WreckinEyez July 11, 2008 11:29 am

Wow… That is a bad picture of Homey there… He looks like all the guys who cut the grass by my house. Good thing the Queen is in that picture… it makes the picture look “half” good.

  170. sjmacro July 11, 2008 11:34 am

checkraze: check with Jack Flash. I just sent him an email link with a picture of the ring–sjmacro

  171. al July 11, 2008 11:40 am

was nice talking to you kai, er. checkraze. whichever you are now a tsaiko for life bull.

  172. Bulla July 11, 2008 11:47 am

    al,
i have to vouch for jack flash and checkraze, true Warrior fans, sat right in front of us in the south end zone, orange section….they bring the whole ohana, kidz and all….thought at one time that checkraze was going to start tossing his kid like a beachball in the standz…but the wife grabbed him….talk about dedication.

in fact, i was wearing our plastic custom nametags someone gave us, it was on the side of my Saint Louis #95 Da Beast visor, and jack flash asked me if i was a tsaiko……what’s he smokin i think…how many people have the official custom plastic white on black name tag hanging from their head…….of course i am a tsaiko.

what a relief, last time i told someone that, they increased my medications, haha.

it’s all good, just basking in the glow of being a part of history at UH

  173. WreckinEyez July 11, 2008 11:49 am

I think one of the Highlights I saw last night also didn’t happen on the stage but near the area they were selling the Tsaiko Stuff…

JD and Rep. Takai got CROWNED!!!… Enjoy your glasses!!!

  174. Bulla July 11, 2008 11:53 am

    wreck,

mahalo, the printed version is close enough to what was said, but i was ad libbing as we went….when it’s flowing, just keep going….haha

thanks again for allowing me to participate, everyone was awesome, and if they want stan sheriff next year…oh my…….how nutz would that be.

band was awesome, got some talented yodellers in this group, not one of them from damien

speaking of damien, had to check twice, just thought i saw koakane floating by in the ala wai with a pink inner tube…..my mistake….it was jamie, i mean james….haha

where are those bad boyz? i am going to go on a recon mission on keeamoku and see if i can find their vehicle. when i asked koakane if he was the designated driver he said no, james was the designated driver and he was the designated putter….huh?

oh well………..the beat, as in the warrior beat…………goes on

  175. Pauoa Boy July 11, 2008 11:55 am

Howzit Aunty Ronnie on my way back today hopefully, I have something for your son from Kekoa.

Kelli – Too bad you weren’t there last night, was hoping to meet you.

Pauoa Boy – have a safe flight and I’ll see you Wednesday. You’ll have pictures and videos right? 😉

  178. Ronnie July 11, 2008 12:05 pm

So, I’m trying to decide when to schedule my trip home next summer…

Should I be there so my son and nephew can have a joint grad party (we have so much family, it’s best to kill two birds with one stone) or should I be there for the next blog party at “The Stanley”? hhhhmmmmmm…..

  179. Bulla July 11, 2008 12:06 pm

    i forgot,

ronnie, mahalo for the kind words…..

  180. Da Punchbowl Kid July 11, 2008 12:06 pm

I thought one of the best speeches last night was when Jamie, oops, I mean James, and Joe were speaking with that pake accent. The three raffle guys were hilarious. They can also play music too. Ok, forget about, Booga Booga and Rap. Let’s give our guys some palaka shirts and put ’em on stage as Blogga Blogga. 😆

  181. Ronnie July 11, 2008 12:06 pm

Of course, once we add all of his Tsaiko uncles, aunties, and cousins, we may have to have the grad party at The Stanley.

  182. WreckinEyez July 11, 2008 12:07 pm

Bulla… I caught the part about people avoiding someone’s nanas… (you know what I mean)… You sly guy…

Too bad the False, Koakane, and AWH clans left early… They could have won a lot of the prizes.

  183. Garret July 11, 2008 12:08 pm

Great to get to read about the party and that everyone had such a great time! I’m so envious that all of you had a great time…I ended up working late last night because of the presentation I gave to some government folks today.

Congratulations again to ST for creating such a great community. Gatherings like the Bash shows just how much the community has grown and how welcoming it is.

BSU is putting in their new turf and it is an even brighter blue.

Blue Turf IV is nearly installed.

Construction crews have been working on a new playing surface inside Bronco Stadium for three weeks, and the $800,000 project is scheduled to be finished by the end of the month. The famous blue turf is being installed this week.

The new turf is noticeably brighter than the previous turf – and it’s flat. Construction crews removed the north-south crown that ran through the middle of the field and made the surface completely flat.

    BTW, Homes…your cover is blown.

  186. Ronnie July 11, 2008 12:13 pm

Bulla, it’s a good thing no one was around when I was reading it. It’s not such a good thing to cry at work. I just kept nodding, and smiling, and crying. You really put the Tsaiko Culture into words. I’m sending a copy to my boss, and his boss, so they will understand better why my Tsaiko family is so important to me.

  188. Garret July 11, 2008 12:14 pm

Looks like the college football coaches association will officially propose the early signing period for football recruiting. I’ve always wanted an early signing period, but it would make things more difficult for UH to recruit on the mainland. I guess the Junior Days and camps would be even more important if this rule passes. And if an early signing date saves money, that is great for a school with a limited recruiting budget…

The American Football Coaches Association is leaning toward proposing an early signing date for the third week of December beginning in 2009.

AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff said that would probably be the group’s recommendation. Teaff expects the AFCA will examine a proposal by August and, if approved, make a recommendation to conference commissioners in September.

Teaff said more than 60 percent of college coaches favor adopting an early signing period – a higher percentage than in the past – and the majority prefer early December.

For the last two months, the AFCA has listened to the opinions of high school coaches, who are the final group of stakeholders being surveyed.

“Our survey shows high school coaches are very much against a signing date where there are games left because of the distraction to their season,” Teaff said.

Teaff said high school coaches overwhelmingly disapproved of a proposal from SEC coaches for a one-day signing date in late November.

The ACC, Big 12 and Big East have favored an early signing day, and the Pac-10 opposes one. Teaff said the majority of Division I-A coaches favor a December date because it would save money and take the pressure off recruits by ending the process sooner.

It would also secure commitments. Rivals.com reported nearly 200 players de-committed from the 2008 class.

  189. Da Punchbowl Kid July 11, 2008 12:16 pm

Rep. Takai, what can you say about the guy? He does a great job in the legislature, gets a proclamation for Tsai, and knows how to just hang out and have fun like a true Tsaiko. It was also very impressive to the unity and cohesiveness of JD, VH, and GM. Every body’s on the same page it looks like, and there is a great deal of regard for one another at the Manoa campus. It’s a beautiful thing, like icing on the Tsaiko cake.

  190. Dennis Halloran July 11, 2008 12:16 pm

Sounds like a great time for all the Ohana.

Comparing the Washington Post’s salaries with the Advertiser’s salaries could be useful for the Advertiser’s Union. There are a few people at the Washington Post that make crazy money.

The Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild yesterday released a survey of salaries in the newsroom of the Washington Post. Most of the document is a snooze: A lot of editorial aides are earning salaries in the $30,000 range and a lot of reporters hover in high five-figure, low six-figure territory.

There is, however, one fun detail: Three employees in the category of “Reporter, Bureau Chief or Columnist” are pulling down between $230,000 and $239,000. As this this publication made clear last month, that salary is higher than the base pay of the paper’s tier of assistant managing editors.

So who are these three well-paid Posties? I’m guessing that two of them are Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser, the ESPNers who have a leg up in just about any set of negotiations over compensation.

  193. WreckinEyez July 11, 2008 12:18 pm

DPK, you are right… James wanted to be on the mic more. maybe next year we’ll give him more time… Too bad the Tsaiko Karaoke Legends didn’t get a chance to perform. Jamie (**Voice from the side screams,” That’s his girl name!” **) I mean, “James” sing his rendition of Tin Man with Dean… and Dancing Queen, Solo!

  195. Garret July 11, 2008 12:21 pm

Great news about Colt! I think that it is not a coincidence that Washington released a QB that was supposed to be competing with Colt after Colt got his medical clearance.

In a blow to local Maryland fans, the Redskins released former Terrapin quarterback Sam Hollenbach.

Hollenbach always faced long odds to make it with an NFL team, but hung in there through the Skins brief infatuation with Jordan Palmer last season. The Redskins selection of Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennan sealed Hollenbach’s fate.

Brennan is no certainty to make the team either. He comes with better stats than Hollenbach and with a legion of fans. I know this because we hear from each and every one of them whenever we write anything remotely bad about him.

I don’t see Brennan as the flier Jordan Palmer was. I have a hunch Jim Zorn knows something about the guy named Colt with a gun of an arm. So I see Brennan sticking around as long as Zorn does.

  196. da princess' classmate July 11, 2008 12:21 pm

sorry if already mentioned but …heard from a friend that sam hollenbaugh sp?? (QB w/ skins) got released. any confirmation. great news for colt getting that #3 spot, not that i had any doubts he’d be able to get it on his own.

    k-dens

  197. Garret July 11, 2008 12:22 pm

I lived this comment on the article.

Colt is unbelievably accurate, is a great leader, team player, has an uncanny ability of making plays in crucial situations, and can make plays after the play breaks down. If you thought he was pretty good his senior season, take a look at film from his junior year when he was healthy against a lot tougher schedule.

I believe Zorn met Colt at a June Jones golf tournament and got to know him. That is when you really appreciate the guy. Always humble, and always credits his teammates.

Although he has not done anything yet, and should not get credit, I think Colt will be a pleasant surprise, and earn the respect of his teammate and Redskin fans.

  198. Garret July 11, 2008 12:23 pm

Another article about how Washington released the competitor to Colt for the #3 QB spot.

The Redskins also released QB Sam Hollenbach — who had been expected to vie for the No. 3 QB role with rookie Colt Brennan — plus DE Tommy Davis and C Kyle DeVan.

  199. al July 11, 2008 12:23 pm

hats off to wreck btw for orchestrating the program last night. we understand that due to time constraints some portions of the program was pre-empted. its okay.

i had my stuff prepared on a piece of toilet paper and accidently used it. mwahahahaha.

  200. Garret July 11, 2008 12:25 pm

The Washington Times figured that Hollenbach’s release meant that Colt was healthy…which ST’s report at the top confirmed.

The surprise move by the Redskins today wasn’t that the team signed third-round pick Chad Rinehart, an offensive lineman from Northern Iowa. It was that one of three players released was former Maryland quarterback Sam Hollenbach.

Hollenbach’s departure is a sign that a) draft pick Colt Brennan will be recovered from hip surgery in time for training camp July 20 and b) coach Jim Zorn was impressed last year and this year by former Marshall quarterback Derek Devine. Devine was in Seattle’s camp last summer.

  201. WreckinEyez July 11, 2008 12:25 pm

    Ronnie,

If that got to you… You would have balled tears last night listening to Tsai breakdown… Snap, I was holding it in too. Big Props to A-Joe in helping him through it. A-Joe clapped and cheered for Tsai’s intensions when he was lost for words in acknowledging the people who helped him through out his life.

  202. Garret July 11, 2008 12:26 pm

Bess gets some praise in this article.

    Davone Bess, WR

While quarterback Colt Brennan was busy putting up eye-popping statistics at Hawaii this year, Bess was on the other end posting his third straight 1,000-yard receiving season. Although Bess is a bit undersized at only 5-11, 195, he makes up for it in quickness. Bess doesn’t have great timed speed, but he possesses terrific agility and a solid set of hands. Many will dismiss his college productivity because of the type of offense Bess played in, but to simply shrug him off would be a mistake. For a Dolphins team that is in desperate need of playmaking wide receivers, Bess could be a solution. It seems only three receivers — Ted Ginn Jr., Ernest Wilford, and Derek Hagen — are locks to make Miami’s roster. Beyond those three are an assortment of veterans and rookies who will be battling for the final couple spots. Bess seems a reasonable choice to fill one of those positions.

  203. da princess' classmate July 11, 2008 12:26 pm

thanks Garret – just got da confirmation

  204. al July 11, 2008 12:28 pm

just heard on espn nfl talk that one sportscaster was saying that favre is asking for his unconditional release so he can go to the team of his choice.

the speculation by this reporter was that he would go to the redskins. he said that current starter jason campbell could learn from favre in the next two years as favre’s understudy.

    what is in his coffee?

i would say that oakland or minnesota would be better fits. or miami for that matter.

  206. Garret July 11, 2008 12:28 pm

Not a Warrior player, but a player from Hawaii was mentioned in this article.

Bomber linebacker Joe Lobendahn will make his professional football debut tonight against the Lions, playing on three special teams.

The 25-year-old hails from Honolulu, but isn’t sure if they can get CFL games on TV in Hawaii.

“I don’t think they do, but my family is trying to see if they can get a satellite or something like that,” Lobendahn said. “I’m not sure if they broadcast it that far.”

The Bombers want to see what Lobendahn, who starred for the University of Washington Huskies, can do on special teams and perhaps in some second-and-long defensive situations. He is replacing Marcus Winn on the active roster.

  207. Da Punchbowl Kid July 11, 2008 12:28 pm

    Garret,
Great post about Colt and Zorn. We all know that Zorn is right about Colt, it’s only a time before the DC fans see what a great player he is. With Zorn’s coaching, for Colt, the sky is the limit.

in regards to Farve, would the Pack be dumb enough to let him go knowing full well that 2 teams in their own division (Vikes and Bears) need QB help. ultimate nightmare having him play the pack in a bear uniform, yikes.

  211. Garret July 11, 2008 12:32 pm

    DPK,

I agree with what you said about Colt and Zorn. I think that it is great timing for Colt that he entered the draft when Zorn was a first-year head coach with a need for a young QB. I’m sure that Zorn wants to help develop Colt and that Colt will work his behind off to earn his place in the NFL. I predict that Colt will start an NFL game at QB by the 2009 season.

  212. Garret July 11, 2008 12:35 pm

I don’t think this was posted to the blog yet. Pretty cool that ST is the judge that will be awarding a season-ticket package to UH games.

Are you the biggest fan of the University of Hawaii Warrior football team? If so, Hawaiian Telcom wants to connect with you.

The UH Warriors are coming off a historic season that took them all the way to the Sugar Bowl, heightening Warrior-Mania. As a new season approaches, Hawaiian Telcom is looking for fans to tell the world in a video why they are the best, wackiest or most rabid Warrior fan. Fans can upload their videos at http://www.hawaiiantel.com/warriors and invite family and friends to vote for them. The fan whose video gets the most votes will win a UH season-ticket package. A second winner of a UH season-ticket package will be selected by The Honolulu Advertiser Sports Reporter Stephen Tsai. Those who share videos (e.g., forward to a friend) and vote will also be eligible to win prizes from the Polynesian Cultural Center and Sea Life Park.

  213. Ronnie July 11, 2008 12:35 pm

Pauoa Boy: Sorry, I didn’t know anyone who was going until it was too late. Maybe next time.

  215. al July 11, 2008 12:38 pm

the pack will have to let favre go, scott free. they have already made a huge public commitment to aaron rogers in the past few weeks.

not unless they have no class and attempt to keep favre in green bay. but, it would be in the best interest of all to just let favre move on.

he’ll probably play another two years max.

  216. Loa July 11, 2008 12:42 pm

We had to peel the karaoke mic from him and his bro so Tina could close the club last nite! I suggest a K-call for your next Lo Cal gathering, and put him in charge.

Koakane/James/Homey ~ Will you 3 Amigos call in to the Tsaiko playhouse for accountability. For now we are just carrying you as ‘tardy.’ After 12 noon you are AWOL and will have to face the wrath of BG…uhhh..try wait, where’s BG?

after all isn’t he a lurker and has posted on at least two occasions.

  221. al July 11, 2008 12:47 pm

    talking about bulla….
mapo tofu is not bubbling tofu soup. the former is pake food while the sun dubu is korean. i was surprised jason didn’t correct you last night.

    arf.

  222. Rich2176 July 11, 2008 12:48 pm

    Hey Garret –

I think that WP writer got the info about Zorn meeting Colt at a golf tournament from a post I submitted a few months ago. LOL…..Even ST hadn’t put 2+2 together until I mentioned it to him….

Good to see Colt healed and ready to kick okole….

  223. jojo ® July 11, 2008 12:49 pm

approximately how many lurkers showed up last night? I just stay wondering, small kine…

  224. Loa July 11, 2008 12:53 pm

Rich – so i guess that shows the WP guys lurk here too, hmmm

    hi jojo!

  225. Rich2176 July 11, 2008 12:57 pm

Loa – actually, it was on the WP site.

  226. Rich2176 July 11, 2008 1:03 pm

Bulla – Sob, sob, sniff beautiful words

  227. Garret July 11, 2008 1:05 pm

    Rich,

I remembered that you were the source of that info, pretty cool that the information is getting around now.

I’m glad that your work is going so well…the only bad thing is that it keeps you from having time to blog much. I can’t wait to hear about how things are going on Wednesday and will tell some interesting stuff about things that happened with my company (like to who and why I was giving a presentation today) if anyone wants to hear.

  228. da princess' classmate July 11, 2008 1:11 pm

i know its a little early and i’m only a rookie but just wondering if you guyz are planning an event for the OSU game in Sept. either in Seattle or Corvallis would be kool

    k-dens

  229. A-House July 11, 2008 1:18 pm

    Jojo:

Great party last night and, again, hats off the the entire planning committee who put a “ton of time” and money to make it fabulous

  230. duffer July 11, 2008 1:20 pm

    A-House,

Don’t forget to email me about those seats……

  231. BG July 11, 2008 1:21 pm

    Braddah Kekoa

Mark me as “present”…but not all here 😀

Been lurking as my brain too tired to put a whole sentence together…and I didn’t even drink last night! Still feeling the euphoria, tho’. Konna go home, have a glass of wine, and then minutely examine the inside of my eyelids!

BTW, we gotta engrave Bulla’s oratory and enshrine it as another milestone in Tsaiko history ❗

  232. A-House July 11, 2008 1:21 pm

    Jojo:

continue from above – wonder what the heck happened cause I never hit the “send” button

I met 4 or 5 lurkers last night – must have been many more and it was great to meet them -hope they decide to post in the near future.

next time I need to review the attendance list to see who I need to meet – last night I didn’t seek out Jack Flash and others, but saw their names mentioned on the blog today.

  233. BG July 11, 2008 1:22 pm

    Back to work…

  234. A-House July 11, 2008 1:25 pm

    duffer:

OK, will check my list when I get home.

  235. Pomai July 11, 2008 1:25 pm

Garret don’t be surprised if Colt gets some playing time this year and maybe start a few towards the end of the season. I myself think he is going to end up as the backup QB to start the season.

  236. onarock July 11, 2008 2:03 pm

    Wreck,
Nope, nevah read da’ book yet. Why, you like borrow?

Thank you and the entire party committee for throwing such an entertaining, laid-back, star-studded event. I’m big on first impressions, so last night I confirmed that I’m big on da’ Tsaikos and Coach Mack (real humble and genuine kinda’ guy). Didn’t get to personally meet JD, Chancellor Hinshaw, or Rep. Takai, but I could really see how they are all on the same page from what each of them shared on stage, especially all the ‘from the heart’ kinda’ stuff………of course, who can forget ST’s moment up there……….can’t help but to feel inspired and pumped for the upcoming Warrior Football season and the growing community that is the Warrior Beat Blog! Mahaloz again!

Back to work……..have a great weekend Tsaikos!

  237. chawan_cut July 11, 2008 2:08 pm

since i know she’s lurking out there somewhere…

it was nice to finally meet you Mrs. Wai as well !!!

again, hope everyone out there had a great time last night.

  238. lakerj32 aka "lefty" July 11, 2008 2:12 pm

Thanks everyone for last night. Being a newbie it was fun to meet new people and see friends. I hope someone got Jim Leahy’s speech on video or something. That was classic.

Stretch – Dang, that mug is heavy! Its going next to my trapasso signed ball.

  239. Mrs. A-House July 11, 2008 2:18 pm

    Good Afternoon!!

Five F’s hit the Megabucks last night…can’t put a $$$ value on the “memories made”…Family / Friendships / Fuuud / FUN!! / Football!!

I try to read all the posts before I add mine…so you can imagine me nodding and agreeing with the comments already expressed by appreciative attendees at last evening’s bash. Every word of it is the truth and will be repeated with relish many more times. Please add my DITTO to the thanks and accolades directed to the Tsaiko/Tsaikettes who worked countless hours to MAKE IT HAPPEN! You know who you are.

Gigi – I, too, had a hard time sleeping last night. Thanks for accepting ST’s apology and returning home to the WB blog. You are indeed a very special lady.

ST – I cried when you cried. My heart was filled with emotion…happy kine emotion…had to hold myself back from leaping on stage to embrace you as you struggled for words to describe the love for your remarkable wife, Wena, and darling kids and everybody else who helped make you DA MAN that you are.

Wreck – I almost cried and passed out when you asked me to change my speech, mid-stream, from focusing on Jim Leahey instead of Chancellor Hinshaw. Worked out beautifully though.

Jim Leahey – If you’re reading this post, you are even more handsome up close than on tv. Mahalo for inviting A-House to speak on your show? Wow, that’s news to me. Sorry I missed the broadcast.

Pauoa Boy – You won the autographed picture of Colt fair and square. Stretch and Koakane were supposed to pick MY number and award ME the picture. They goin’ get it! What a thrill to finally meet you and Kai. YOU guys are a riot! Get plenny more stories to talk about Molokai. A-House will be happy to share his first-person ghost stories on Molokai…chicken skin/chills…big time. The responsibilities of being Tsaiko Orbs Club President are heavy, but I love it.

Homey – As Addaknowsports declared…your cover is BLOWN, big time. When I saw your picture with the “queen” posted, my jaw dropped. Hah?? I gazed at it a while longer…and realized…you, too, are more handsome in person. If I had a hardman who looked like you, I think I just might be mowing the lawn right along side you. You flex your guns…I flex mine.

Tiffani – If you don’t remember anything else about football…just remember the name COLT BRENNAN. If I couldn’t win that helmet, I’m happy you won it. Sorry for making a pest of myself…lingering next to you as you held it. I know I stroked it again and again hoping that perhaps one of the stickers would stick to my fingers. No such luck.

Mike Tsai – You, too, are more handsome in person than in that outdated picture of you in the HA. Change the pic. You are definitely more matured and good looking now. This compliment has nothing to do with your sharing a winning waffle ticket with A-House for the Camellia dinner for two…purely coincidental.

Koa-Mahu – I know you were there last night. No shame to come up to me and introduce yourself. My maternal instincts are strong. I’m here to help you through your male/female love/hate issues…and girl, you need it. And, BTW, I want you to autograph my book.

Whitey / Duffer / Keyton – You represent Maui in the finest manner. Thanks for flying over on your Lear jet…especially with the gas prices what they are now.

Got to go now…don’t want to bust the blog. Warmest Aloha…

  240. A-House July 11, 2008 2:20 pm

    Stretch:

Mrs A-House wants to exchange the “small” beer mugs for the “large mug” and pay the additional $6.

    Let us know if can.

    Thanks.

  241. bonar July 11, 2008 2:21 pm

interesting developments with the Redskins and Favre. Hmmm…

  242. bonar July 11, 2008 2:22 pm

#202: All signs point to DB making the squad. Oops…hope I didn’t put the jinx on him. BTW, 5’11” is being generous, but no matter.

  243. bonar July 11, 2008 2:25 pm

Wow, is that really the internet legend Homey’s pic?

  244. whitey July 11, 2008 2:32 pm

good afternoon tsaikos. was a truly memorable and super party and thanks for letting us be a part of it. got to meet a lot of tsaikos and hope i don’t have a brain lock. great to see UH administration and athletic dept working together. kudos to the committee that put in the effort and soul to make this one to remember. was hoping to win the box seats, but got the sashimi plate without the sashimi. thank you al for the transportation and mrs bulla for the hotel room. am still groggy, but want to thank all of you for a most enjoyable evening.

  245. checkraze July 11, 2008 2:32 pm

How could anyone be the GM / Coach that let Favre leave Green Bay. He has to stay in GB if he plays or else hey gonna have to hire people to start their cars, taste their food, and clean of the toilet paper and eggs on their houses.

  246. LizKauai [Believer] July 11, 2008 2:38 pm

Rep Mark Takai- pls check your email or if you see this first, pls contact me – lizkauai at gmail dot com

    MAHALO!

  247. WreckinEyez July 11, 2008 2:40 pm

Thank you Mrs. A-house for making that quick adjustments for me. You did great event though you look like you were going to battle. I know if you were going to battle with Herman and Benson, Mr. A-House would be by your side and they will hear him coming I am sure as his words from those nights at Henry Lousie still ring in my head and my ear.

BG, Dean… Ho… you guys got excited to rush the stage too. To everyone who came up to speak on the mic, thank you… You helped once again to write the Tsaiko history books.

  248. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2008 2:45 pm

I’m horrible at math, which is why I ask: If the Packers keep Favre, how does that affect the salary cap?

  249. WreckinEyez July 11, 2008 2:46 pm

Hey! glad to see the Liane there too! The princess was there but she already had some all-star baseball player from Yale with her… LOL

I like to thank Queen Wai, it really ment a lot to me that she went around and thanked the people personally who put in the work in for this event. Being such a lurker and one as shy as she… that put a smile on my face.

Ohh… I am also sure that KINDA SHY was not shy at all as she bumped her husband from the mic to talk. She lie… 😆

  250. jojo ® July 11, 2008 2:49 pm

    Thanks A-House for the update.

    Welcome Lurkers!

and Wreck, how come you didn’t see my tattoo, yet? Mrs. A-House saw it.

    Have a sunny weekend LOA!

  251. wafan July 11, 2008 2:51 pm

    Mr. Tsai . . .

Thank you for putting up a photo of the proclamation. I do not understand, though, what they meant by “average of 30 posts . . .”

    Average? Huh?

Must be creative accounting by the legislators. Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Still, congratulations on your many and continued successes!!!

  252. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2008 2:51 pm

By the way, has Jojo explained why she pulled an Esme?

  253. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2008 2:53 pm

They meant 30 posts at the beginning.

  254. wafan July 11, 2008 2:54 pm

princesses friend (or something like that) — sorry I know I got your name wrong . . .

You asked about a cc before the OSU game. We are planning something but just do not have everything nailed down — yet. If you are interested please check in at SteveM’s site (when he posts just click on his name, then navigate your way to the OSU game information).

Where are you located? WA or OR?

  255. wafan July 11, 2008 2:56 pm

    Mr. Tsai . . .

Thank you for the clarification. It was a wee bit difficult to read — I need stronger glasses. HA!

Heck, from 30 posts in the beginning to a couple, three over 1000 comments. Whoo-hoo!!!

  256. WreckinEyez July 11, 2008 3:03 pm

    Jojo,

I always sat at the same table with you… you always sat across of me… I am sure if you had it across your forehead like we did koakane when he passed out drunk, I would have seen it. Next time Jojo…

… … Now watch Koakane run for a mirror to check his head…

  257. WreckinEyez July 11, 2008 3:09 pm

    onarock…

you set me up… 🙂 good play there… LOL

    Mrs. A-House…

Did you already have AWH, False Teeth, False Kanack, Koawahine, and hurt feeling’s sign your book already!?! Now all you need is KoaMahu to sign? I don’t know how to find that person but I am sure James or Koakane can get “in touch” with him/her for you…

  258. LizKauai [Believer] July 11, 2008 3:11 pm

ruggo & 808chef – were you there last night? Did I talk to you? gunfunnit, I got carried away with the video thing (the speeches were all so good!) and didn’t go around to meet everyone.

  259. LizKauai [Believer] July 11, 2008 3:21 pm

Wreck- you really showed your “pro smarts” last night – modifying and tailoring the events on the fly to suit the situations as they arose.
We were fully satisfied, yet curious about the good things “left in the kitchen” that might be shared in good times to come!

When things are rough and challenging, many of us have a clear vision of a “happy place” to go to.

ST put it so well – “Am I dying? Everyone is being so nice to me”. Indeed, Tsai-ko culcha takes advantage of every opportunity to “make memories” now. We do it all for the benefit of others – that way no one gets left behind 😆

  260. wafan July 11, 2008 3:24 pm

    Whereas, Many of us agree that it quite a poor showing for the bosses not to recognize the bash, the contributions of the blog and its members, or the blog host;

    Whereas, I usually attribute this to professional jealousy;

    Whereas; It would take all of 5-seconds to personally say “Nice work — we certainly appreciate it!”;

    Whereas; They may not understand they are cutting their own throats to spite the hard workers of the HA;

Whereas: The videos produced by Princess Leila are sorely missed and should be returned post-haste; and,

Whereas; There are a “few” of us who have become enlightened and enjoy the open camaraderie.

Therefore; Let them catch-a-clue that the blog has almost taken on a life
of its own, that you are the lead Tsai, that the Tsai-kos are growing in number, and we are capable of successfully accomplishing many things.

  261. Garret July 11, 2008 3:30 pm

Looks like JJ isn’t going to lose his AD to Notre Dame.

SMU athletic director Steve Orsini will not be going to Notre Dame or anyplace else in the near future.

The school announced late Friday afternoon that Orsini will remain at SMU.

Orsini, who has been at SMU for 25 months, was considered one of the leading candidates to replace Kevin White as Notre Dame’s athletic director. In 1977, Orsini was a fullback and co-captain on an Irish football team that claimed the national title.

As a private school, SMU does not have to reveal contracts. But typically, such announcements like the one made Friday involve a contract extension and pay increase.

Orsini convinced boosters to pay Jones’ salary, estimated at about $2 million annually, with the hopes of revitalizing a program that has never really recovered from the death penalty two decades ago.

At the same time, Orsini has overseen $60 million in new construction and improvements to SMU athletic facilities.

Wow, what a tremendous party it was yesterday. From the set-up to the party to the clean-up to the after-party, it was all good, cause it was all spent with great friends. I had the time of my life, mahalo to Stephen for creating such a tremendous family.

But eh, all those nabeyaki udon hoarders, share the soup next time! 😉

Glad to hear Colt got his full clearance. Now he can work out and earn the respect of his teammates and coaches.

  264. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2008 3:41 pm

    Re: SMU.
That’s nice. It would have been too awkward for a new AD to come in.

  268. Jack Flash July 11, 2008 3:48 pm

    Eh Checkraze!
What, you neva went work today? Auwe! I’m glad we made it an early one last night as baby boy is still sick- 104 degree temp at 3:30am. He’s doing good today, but would’ve been rough caring for him with a hangover!

BTW- Favre- please retire a Packer. Anything less would be blasphemy.

I second the motion that somebody must post Papa Leahy’s attack on he-who-must-not-be-named… CLASSIC!!!

  269. midori7 July 11, 2008 3:48 pm

What a night, what a party!

The Tsaikos sure know how to have a good time! Thanks again to ST & his awesome family, the planning committee, the all-star band, the special guests, and of course all the Tsaikos! Really nice to put the names with the faces.

    Pauoa Boy:
you & your brother are hilarious! Welcome to the ever growing A-House ohana! Great talking to you guys after the party & at Genji’s.

    Annodah Dave:

    whitey, duffer & son:
great you guys made it for the party! gotta try to get to Maui one of these days…

    Wreck:
I got some nice pics of the “crowned” moment.

    d1shima:
missed A-House on Leahey & Leahey too. wow, you were up early!

The Tsaikos are the BEST! So many great memories! Can’t wait for next year’s party!

  275. jojo ® July 11, 2008 4:08 pm

Awww, Stephen Tsai, don’t say that. I have never said that I don’t like you. I may have said I don’t like the non-football season, but I like you. I like Wena, too, she’s smart, and she smiles more than you.

  293. WreckinEyez July 11, 2008 4:36 pm

I remember Leila’s friend.. Kekaula was saying “what kind of people actually go out to play soccer in their free time”… I would not count her as she came and went.

I don’t know who was Ed… maybe A-Joe’s friend? Did he get a name tag?

I would say that A-Sports made the effort and blogged as a regular now. so she is a full OB. We know her personality, she goes around and talks. Gives us more than 5 comments a week…. I do believe she earned her place…

    Hi, Tsaiko-Nation and Tsai-Meister.

Got back from work and it took ’till now to catch up on the blog.

What can one say to add to the praises that has not been eloquently stated by someone today? Having read everything, from Tsai-Meisters post to the very last comment, there is only one thing I can add, I’m proud to be a Tsaiko. There is nothing like it in the known Universe with such diversity of characters and talents, or the bonding and Aloha that goes on every day.

Tsai-Meister, the little acorn you’ve planted two years ago, is beginning to grow into a strong oak tree. Congratulations everybody, just wish I could have been there.

  297. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2008 4:48 pm

Ed is Ed Fountain, who used to run the RainBowTique stores.
I think he donated some shirts.

  298. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2008 4:49 pm

By the way, I cheated on the transcriptions. Rep. Takai e-mailed me a copy. I cut and pasted it.
I also sent a copy to SteveM for our archives.

  299. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2008 4:50 pm

    Just teasin’, JoJo.
By the way, how come you weren’t on the Castle float during the 4th of July Parade?

  300. wafan July 11, 2008 4:51 pm

    Mr. Tsai . . .

Is Colt already in DC? Will he be there next week? I will be there Monday through Friday morning and would love to get his autograph on a Washington Redskins #5 Brennan jersey. Whoo-hoo!!!

    Yep, I am now a wa(redskins)fan, too!!!

  301. gigi-hawaii © July 11, 2008 4:52 pm

ST, I was wondering why there were no typos. Good that you copied and pasted.

  302. FloridaTed July 11, 2008 4:52 pm

Great news about Colt. Now his time will come to show the Nation what we in Hawai already know very well.

Somehow I have this feeling that Colt will start the last three games of the season…..

  303. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2008 4:52 pm

And I meant Castle Medical Center, not Castle High School.

  304. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2008 4:53 pm

    Hey, hey, hey.
There’s a reason I make so many typos.
    … I can’t spell.

  305. Bulla July 11, 2008 4:55 pm

    jojo,

we really missed you last night 🙁 our loss i know. it was epic, more than anyone could have imagined….such positive energy……very invigorating and everyone was smiling…..very nice

  307. gigi-hawaii © July 11, 2008 4:56 pm

ST knows how to spell and he also knows how to punctuate!

  308. wafan July 11, 2008 4:56 pm

    Mr. Tsai . . .

So you do not take off points for spelling errors when you teach? Boy, my kind of teacher!!!

    Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

  309. Stephen Tsai July 11, 2008 4:56 pm

OK, I’m off to Luana Hills for the party. I think Leonard Peters will be there, if Midori7 wants to visit our neighbors.

  310. Bulla July 11, 2008 4:57 pm

thanks for the clarification between the castle hospital, castle hs, and castle park……that would have been a great float with batting cages

If you guys are bored tomorrow and are nearby Pearlridge, stop by Uptown (Old Phase 1 or 2, I could never remember). We’ll be in the center court area by the elevator/escalators between 10am and 3pm.

Some of us local Lego enthusiasts will be showing off our wares. I’ll bring the H that I had last night as well as a bunch of Star Wars stuff. The other guys in the link above will bring their own creations that were seen the in midweek article linked above.

Oh, this is for the celebration of 50 years of Lego.

    Thanks!

D-1 ~ Hope you have recovered from your hooka-dookis and can walk among the living again. Thanks for your support of the band. We can still put all that talent to good use at the T-gates this season at the Cabanas. Got plenty of Kanikapila ammunition left to have a blast!

Aloha kakou e na Tsaiko a pau (that’s each and every one)!
Been lurking for roughly a year and a half now, post only occasionally (you folks all way mo’ smaht dan me), and even though you don’t know me, I feel like you folks are all old friends of mine. I’m on the Big Island, and couldn’t make it to the big city for the party, but confonnit I wish I could have! What a great ‘ohana this is! Congratulations to all who participated, and especially to you ST!
I’m hoping to make it to one of the home games this season, and if there’s a Tsaiko tailgate or other related gathering I’ll be there for that too. As somebody used to say, and I’m sure it’s true, there’s nothing like being there. And I want to get that in-person feeling of the Tsaiko bond too.
In the meantime, keep on bloggin’ — I’ll be a-lurkin’, and just might pop up with a post now and then when you least expect it.
p.s.: this waiting for Warrior Football to start up again is KILLING me…!!

  353. Ruggo July 11, 2008 7:39 pm

Liz – sorry, but you didn’t meet me (I hope . . . ) last night – been under the weather the last 2 days and didn’t want to show up to pass off germs to others (sorry Stretch!). Hope to meet up with you, Kekoa, Ronnie and others this coming season.

Stephen – thank you for this blog and props on your proclamation – really glad
that credit is being given where it is due.

I know others have made “guestimates” on the amount of actual bloggers vs.
lurkers, but believe me, there are TONS of lurkers out there (uh . . . . myself included) who read this blog but don’t post.

So, Stephen, even though the WB may get several hundred hits per day, there are a LOT more folks out there in the shadows who eagerly await your posts/pics everyday to get their dose of Warrior football . . . . haha, you’ve created a monster!

Props to all Tsaikos who have made the WB what it is today. Hopefully I will earn that “Tsaiko” distinction one day . . . .

  354. Unkanesson July 11, 2008 7:39 pm

    d1shima —
    Mahalo for the reply.
Only two things help me maintain my sanity this time of year:
    1. Lurking on the WB blog and
    2. Watching my tapes of the perfect season (yep I’ve got all 12 of’em…may have lost track of the unlucky 13th…). I’m working on a compilation of highlights to put on dvd for bequeath to my mo’opuna.
My work schedule will dictate when I can get away for a weekend of the 5F’s this Fall. I’ll emerge from my lurking when I know the date/game. SJSt. is a possibility. We should be 3-0 at that point and on a roll!
    GO WARRIORS!!

  355. d1shima July 11, 2008 7:45 pm

    Unkanesson,

SJSt. is a possibility. We should be 3-0 at that point and on a roll!

Kekoa/BG/Pauoa Boy – Please don’t list me as AWOL…I can’t imagine facing the consequences from you three…. 🙂

Wreck/Stretch/Twins/Addahknows/d1/KK and anyone else I may have missed (and I apologize for that) – Great job last night. You guys were and are awesome…can’t wait for the next one.

bulla – awesome speech and words of wisdom

al – always the samurai and quiet leader of our rag tag bunch ever since the beginning

DPK – What else can I say.

Jason – You’ve grown so much over the last 2 years. Little did we know that we would be creating a “monster” that emerged when he turned 21…MWAAHAHAHHHAA

Annodah Dave – good to see you again. You gotta make it out to more of our meetings….talk to your spouse unit…mwahahahaha

gigi – thanks for your help and contributions to the blog too.

AND THANKS TO ST, if it wasn’t for him, we wouldn’t be here today.

Thanks all for a great time last night. I can honestly say that people were already talking last night about the next shindig and when we can all get together again. Gonna be a great future with the TSAIKOS.

  361. Darren July 11, 2008 8:02 pm

Gigi – I was at the first one….how could you forget about me??

  362. (Jesse) James July 11, 2008 8:02 pm

gigi…I just wanted to clarify why I wrote what I wrote in the Congratulatory Certificate issued by the Legislature. When I first talked to some members of the planning committee about a Rep. Takai wanting to make a certificate of congratulations from the Legislature, I had an idea about what I wanted to write. Only a few members of the planning committee knew about this as we didn’t want to let the secret surprise out of the bag. We discussed mentioning that first blog party because we wanted to show the growth, or should I say, explosion of the blog. I mean, remember when we only had 30 posts per day? and how we would get excited when we hit 50 posts a day? and when the advertiser decided they were going to shut down the blog until the next season and we hit 100 posts a day? Now the blog averages around 300 – 400 posts a day.

It was sort of a humble beginnings statement in that WHEREAS clause. Although 17people may have “attended” the first blog party, we only counted 12 actual Original Bloggers, or “OBs” as Wreck calls us. They were: al, bulla, DPK, Jason, Wreck, Addahknowjoe, Addahknowsports, Annodah Dave, Darren, gigi, ST, and myself. We decided that since RK, da Princess, Cat, da Princess’ friend, ed(?), and others who were there were already celebrities in their own right and, although Tsaikos, were not akin to us ordinary folk (although I can’t imagine the Tsaikos being anything but ordinary). In fact, it was the Princess who tagged us with the name TSAIKOS.

Anyway, just didn’t want anyone to be offended by my writings.

Thanks again to all for a great night.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  363. (Jesse) James July 11, 2008 8:06 pm

Since I’m having computer problems, if anyone wants to hang out or needs to get ahold of me for whatever reason, just call my cell.

    ST,

Thank you for posting the text of the proclamation!

  367. Garret July 11, 2008 8:25 pm

    James,

You did a great job on the proclamation! Very nicely worded, much better than many others that I’ve seen.

The only thing that I stood out to me as unusual was the 12 bloggers. The way that it was written, I would have expected the Princess, Cat, and ST at least to be counted because they are Tsaikos to me. I understand from your post about how you were just counting the OBs…but I cannot imagine someone like ST and the Princess not being counted!

  368. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc July 11, 2008 8:25 pm

CHING/COOKE FIELD UPDATE: Around 11:30 this morning, I DrDoc called to apologize for failing to give me the fax he’d received at the office – I use his number – on Tuesday morning from the Procurement Office. The submission deadline date has been changed to Friday, July 25, with the information pickup deadline set for Tuesday, July 15.

I immediately called the PO, but the woman with whom I’d been dealing was out to lunch. We then traded phone calls throughout the afternoon and never did talk directly with each other. Will follow up first thing Monday morning.

The Ching/Cooke Field tech/specs drawing is now at the Athletic Department and the prototype recycling bins used last night are going to be altered slightly before they’re delivered to the Department.

MRS.A-HOUSE: One of these days, I’d like to look at your copy of The Perfect Season so I can read the comments as well as the contents. I don’t think I’ve even seen it up close & open – the last time I saw one in a bookstore, it was sealed to discourage booklurkers.

Another busy weekend – Relay For Life – Kailua Beach Park & at Magic Island as well since DrDoc is on the team put together at his office. Mahalo to those of you who are supporting the events.

The cans & bottles will be processed in the morning and probably redeemed on Sunday. This might be another way to raise serious funds for the Athletic Department – based upon 3-plus years’ experience in designing & running recycling/HI-5 redemption campaigns for many different groups, an all-volunteer organization can clear around $25,000 a year with an ongoing campaign.

STRETCH: Why don’t we send the redemption check to you to include with the rest of the donations to Na Koa. That way, the Tsaikos can get full credit for everything.

Is anyone going to the July 31 Na Koa fundraiser honoring Jim Donovan and Greg McMackin? Unfortunately, at $125 per ticket, it’s a little too expensive for us, but surely there must be one or two folks here on the blog with pockets deeper than two quarters who could represent the Tsaikos!

Another event Tsaikos might want to plan to attend as a group is the Pigskin Pigout being put on by Don Murphy on August 21.

There’s also been some talk about additional T-Gatherings on July 31, August 9, 16, and 30. Will the events for Wafan & Rainbow Cliff be on these days or in addition? Will all the events be listed on SteveM’s site?

Don’t forget to factor in the community service project to spruce up the lower campus being scheduled by the Athletic Department when selecting dates. Will try to find out more info from Donovan’s office sometime next week.

    Back to work.

Another article trying to analyze where Favre will end up.

There is no question that quarterback Brett Favre is serious about his return to the NFL.

That was confirmed this afternoon by sources familiar with the quarterback and his decision to request his release from the Green Bay Packers. As ESPN.com reported today, Favre and his agent had a conference call with general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy Tuesday to discuss his possible return to the team.

During that call, Favre made it clear he wants to play again, according to one source with knowledge of the situation. When Thompson and McCarthy essentially told him they couldn’t take him back, he and Cook fired off a letter asking for his release.

What sources close to the situation will tell you is that under no circumstances will the Packers release Favre from his contract. Trade him, possibly, but release him, never.

There is speculation that Favre and his agent, James (Bus) Cook, already have a team picked out. A client of Cook’s recently told a friend that Miami and Carolina were the teams that were Favre’s most likely landing place, and probably the only way he would know that is if discussions had already taken place with those teams.

Don’t forget the San Francisco 49ers received a player and a first-round pick from the Kansas City Chiefs for Joe Montana and a third-round pick when the legendary quarterback was dealt near the end of his career. Favre has more value now than Montana – who was coming off a back injury — did then, and the Packers could find themselves receiving interest from a number of teams.

  384. Esme July 11, 2008 9:33 pm

    Hi, gang!

Finally getting a second to pause, albeit a little belatedly, to say thank you. Thank you to ST and the planning committee and everyone for an utterly unforgettable night. I … I just have no words for what an amazing evening it was, full of love and warmth and legacy, building new friendships and solidifying the ones we depend on. I’ve been away from the blog more than I want to in recent weeks and felt sad about that. So I was touched at the way I was welcomed last night as if I’d never been away. And there so many jaw-dropping moments — they’ve already been recounted here, so I won’t rehash them, but suffice to say, they’ve been branded into everyone’s memory for all time.

I’m excited to think about what lies ahead for this blog group and for the university athletic program that we love.

We are … Tsaikos! (Wreck, I love that cheer!) 😀

Howzit Howzit. In Florida, they’re saying 49 days to go. This is what else they’re talking about. Thought I’d share this feel guud story.

Smiths know value of hard work

    By Robbie Andreu
    Sun sports writer
    Published: Friday, July 11, 2008 at 11:56 p.m.
    Last Modified: Friday, July 11, 2008 at 11:56 p.m.

Every morning before dropping off his three sons at Buchholz High School for early weightlifting, Jim Smith would send them on their way with a motivational line that obviously struck a chord with the boys.
“As we were getting out of the car, he would always say, ‘Work hard and good things will happen,’ ” said James Smith, the oldest son and a special teams standout on Urban Meyer’s Florida football team. “I think that’s something we’ve always tried to live by.”
Whether on the football field or in the classroom (or in just about any other competitive environment), it’s hard to imagine anyone outworking the Smith brothers — James and identical twins Brian and Kevin, who are only 13 months younger than James.
As it turns out, dad was right. Hard work has led to good things for the boys.
“I’m extraordinarily proud of them,” said Jim, who helps manage a large medical practice in Gainesville. “They’ve excelled both on the athletic field and in the classroom.
“The three of them are only 13 months apart, so they kind of grew up together and were on all the sports teams together. They’re very competitive, very hard-nosed.”
The brothers are building resumes that would make any parent proud: *After leading Buchholz in tackles his senior season, James walked on at UF and has been a three-year starter at long snapper. He carries a 3.5 grade-point average and will graduate in August with a degree in exercise kinesiology, fitness and wellness. He has already enrolled in a masters program that will give him a degree in entrepreneurship. He’s been in Meyer’s Champions Club every quarter over the past three years, been a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee for three years and also been UF’s representative at the SEC leadership conference in Birmingham since 2006.
*Kevin is a two-year walk-on outside linebacker at Notre Dame with a 3.5 GPA in political science. On schedule to graduate next spring, he’s on the ND Class Council, in the Student Senate and a Dorm VP. Before going to South Bend, he was the student body president at Buchholz, a captain of the football team and a standout in wrestling and track. This summer, he is interning with NBC at the Beijing Olympics.
*Brian is heading into his third year at the U.S. Naval Academy, where he is an outside linebacker on the Navy Sprint football team (a varsity sport where players cannot weigh more than 172 pounds). He’s a history major with a 3.6 GPA and he’s on schedule to graduate next spring. He’s in the top 10 percent in his class (combination of academic and military ranking) and has won the Navy/Marine Leadership Award the past two years (awarded to six midshipmen in each class each year). He also boxes in the 165-pound class. He will be shadowing a Marine helicopter squadron this summer.

The list of the Smith brothers’ achievements is long (and growing) — and it all spawned from simple beginnings. From wrestling each other on the living room floor. From shooting hoops and competing together on the same youth teams growing up. From being high school teammates. From being not just brothers, but best friends.
“It’s been a lot of fun knowing you always have your two best friends right there with you,” James said.
“It was great having brothers to grow up with. It was awesome,” Brian said. “We were always close. We just did everything together.”

It takes great discipline and physical toughness to make it as a walk-on at Florida or Notre Dame, or to succeed at the Naval Academy.
It takes a tireless work ethic that the brothers say was passed down by their parents — Jim and Mary Smith. Mary Smith is a psychologist working for UF.

“My mom, more than anyone, harped on making sure we got all our work done,” Brian said. “If a ‘B’ is the best you can get, get the ‘B’. But if you can get an ‘A’ and you’re not getting that ‘A’. … just always do your best. That’s the message for everything we’ve done. Our older sister (Megan) is real smart, too. She set the bar high.”

In athletics, Jim Smith’s first love was baseball. He said he nearly failed out of UF in the mid-1970s trying to balance academics along with playing catcher on the baseball team. He eventually gave up the baseball dream and earned his degree.

As he watched his three sons competing as youngsters (and gravitating toward football), his message was always simple and succinct: work hard.

“He’d say, ‘Whatever you guys want to do is fine with me, but if you’re going to do it, give it 100 percent at practice,’ ” Brian said. “It wasn’t so much he was teaching us technique. He would say, ‘Make sure you’re hustling, make sure you’re working as hard as you can.’ It was always effort that he stressed. That’s what we learned from our dad.”

After competing together as teammates for so many years, the brothers went in different directions after high school. James, a lifelong Gator fan, fulfilled a dream and walked on at Florida. Kevin, true to the family’s Irish-Catholic roots, fell in love with Notre Dame. With an interest in a military career, the Naval Academy was the right place for Brian.

“It’s a little tough (being spread out across the country),” Brian said. “It really would have been nice to stay together, but we’re all doing what we want to be doing, and we’re happy for each other more than anything.

“It makes the holidays, when we can get back together, a lot nicer.” As for seeing their three sons play, it’s taken some creative travel planning by Jim and Mary Smith. They already have an itinerary for this fall, the last time all three sons will be playing in college.

“It’s magical to watch them come out of the tunnel, watch them get the chance to play and realize their dreams,” Jim said. “It’s going to be a great but sad year because we know it’s the last year. We’re going to enjoy it, but I think in December we’re going to be very sad.”

After football, who knows, maybe the Smith brothers will get back together again.

“I’d maybe like to go into business with my brothers,” James said. “They’re so well-rounded. I could see us all working together someday.”

“If we can, it would be great,” Brian said. “But I don’t think any of us are quite sure what we’re going to end up doing.” The brothers have a lot more competing to do before that decision arrives.

808chef — I was hoping to meet you at the bash. Are you in any of the photos that are being posted?

I was wondering what happened at Genji’s last night after Liz, Peaches and I left (around 12:30 AM)… first time I couldn’t stay till the end. Kekoa gave some hints earlier. Left behind the Kekoa Klan, Pauoa Boy and brother, JaM & Brie, Ralph, Jason, homey, Koakane, James, Esme, Stretch, and the Addahknow’s….

BTW, whitey’s a charmer and crooner! Al sings very well too, but don’t tell him that… 🙁

Sorry the nabeyaki udon ran out – the main lounge at 10:30 PM went from 0 persons to 35+ hungry Tsai-kos within an hour. But at least we had Tina serving. Art was stunned when he peeked in from the bar side and went to work in the kitchen too 🙂

  444. duffer July 12, 2008 12:11 am

Greetings to the night shift…. 🙂

One of the traits of a Tsai-ko is a sense of humor. I dunno what the others are…

Koakane, you not tired from last night, walking back and forth from the stage to the prize table?

I wonder why I’m up so late…gotta cut those “naps” shorter.

  445. al July 12, 2008 12:12 am

  446. jojo ® July 12, 2008 12:13 am

no, let’s leave it at esme.

and if you guys left her there, did she sing allllll the songs?

  447. Kekoa July 12, 2008 12:14 am

SteveM ~ My apologies to Tina and the crew at Genji’s. My Klan overstayed their welcome…because they ended up breaking out the guitars after wearing out the Karaoke machines! After several closing numbers, we managed to get the boyz out the door as the owners were flipping the light off and on to remind us that they were in fact CLOSED!

$264 worth of shots later, which Mrs. K so graciously paid for, I poured the Babooz braddahs into the back seat of my Buick with Jason riding shotgun. By the time I dropped Jason off at his place, the boys were harmonizing the Zzzz’s in perfect 2 part harmony!

Mrs. K followed us at a safe distance in our Mafia car to make sure I kept it between the white lines. (Actually I was drinking Pepsi and then iced water at Genji’s). Jason was prepared to testify in my behalf.

Ask Tina if it’s ok for us to come back again next year.

  448. Jason July 12, 2008 12:19 am

Try find one date before I leave on the 29th that’s good with a-sports. Please, pretty please. 😀

Nah, just kidding. I think. Would be nice to be able to attend, but I no like be selfish and demand a date change or anything.

duffer try these…..need for tsaiko traits:

    #1 love warrior football
    #2 love to eat a big meal(food)
#3 love your family, both the real one and tsaiko ohana and can talk good or stink about them with no shame
#4 get plenty friends or make friends with the tsaiko’s, no hard.
#5 enjoy yourself here and have fun

and start busting out the old fishin pole soon to add finshing.

  451. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER July 12, 2008 12:25 am

  454. al July 12, 2008 12:33 am

i’ll bet that karaoke master stevem’s favorite show was not “checkers n pogo” but rather, “sing a long with mitch”.

“okay boys n girls follow the bouncing ball!”
wasn’t that show the precursor of karaoke??

  455. Kekoa July 12, 2008 12:40 am

Liz ~ Actually, Kimana and Kaipo went to the beach today before they went to work at 5 PM. Diana took the laundry down to the river to beat them on the rocks and spread them out to dry in the sun. Ahhh…the simple life down on the ceded lands.

  456. Darren July 12, 2008 12:40 am

Wen i see my hunk of boyfrirnd kokane, need to ask him if he ever heard of this b*&%$ nani cockett. hello, she don’t look like no legenary singer or dancer to me.

  458. Kekoa July 12, 2008 12:50 am

Al ~ I want to include a way to allow our Tsaiko Villagers off island to have a say in the next blog bash. More importantly, we need to research a legal way of allowing the Tsaiko’s on the mainland to participate in our “door prize” drawings. I’m want to be sure that there is no legal technicalities we may be unaware of.

    Any suggestions?

  459. al July 12, 2008 12:52 am

    geez….is koawahine’s comment one of the 5 f’s?

    fun?

so bulla calls around dinner hour still pumped up from the blog bash annie party. gotta love dat big guy he is so spirited!
and dat lyn is his perfect match. the long and short of it is that inspite of the disparity in size they sure make one cute couple yah.

    I’ll second that!

  462. Kekoa July 12, 2008 12:58 am

    Hiya Esme!

Got da keeds tonite while the hubby goes looking for leftover Tsaiko party favors or raffle tickets?

  463. al July 12, 2008 12:59 am

kekoa…..its something that has been bandied about for awhile.

the only way i see is to incorporate as a non-profit which would allow tsaiko donors to legally claim any contributions as tax write off. this would take much and would need the HA’s approval i would think.

i will run it by some counselors including mr. mui.

as it was, any “door prizes” that were donated cannot be used as a tax write off.

unless the existing non-profits that support warrior football/sports were to “operate” the “door prizes” a.k.a “raf*le”.

much to discuss regarding this issue.

  464. Esme July 12, 2008 1:02 am

Kekoa, I just have to say that it was a real pleasure having your ohana along for the ride through music rehearsal, the bash itself and the after-party. I feel privileged to have had a chance to meet them, and please tell them they’re always welcome!

  465. Kekoa July 12, 2008 1:03 am

  466. al July 12, 2008 1:03 am

esmeralda……its about time you woke up. i thought perhaps that you were under the table at genji’s.

btw, you have been relieved. hereafter, it won’t be an “esme” it will be a “jojo”.

  467. al July 12, 2008 1:05 am

i really wanted to hear the karaoke masters perform for us last night.

i believe that you guys would have blown the people away!

  468. SteveM July 12, 2008 1:05 am

Al — didn’t like Sing Along with Mitch. Remember way back when we were in high school, our form of karaoke was singing a popular song along with a guitar or uke? Technology brought karaoke. Too bad it didn’t bring me a better voice too 🙁

  469. al July 12, 2008 1:11 am

steve….we all wish we were rock stars.

  470. Kekoa July 12, 2008 1:14 am

Esme ~ Sincere appreciation for your effort from myself and my ohana. The boys were ready to rock out with the “fire” number, but alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

Maybe next month during the CC for Rainbow Cliff, there will be an opportunity for you to drop in and do an impromptu number for us.

  471. SteveM July 12, 2008 1:15 am

Hi Esme. Wish we could have stayed longer to hear you sing more. I wanted to hear the duet you and Liz were planning on.

Al, last I heard, ST and Addahknowjoe has or is in process of copyrighting the Tsai-ko design. Also a trade mark? Note that the Tsai-ko design is also 100% comprised of english characters. I wonder how IBM protects their name?

  472. addahknowjoe July 12, 2008 1:24 am

SteveM- We talked about it and need to process it further.

  473. addahknowjoe July 12, 2008 1:29 am

Kekoa- Speaking of the CC for RainbowCliff, RC donated a bunch of killer CD’s and cassette tapes that were to be given out with all of the prizes last night. It somehow got lost in the shuffle and ended up back with us again. So, when RC is in town we’ll give them out then.

I just need a faster way to send the info up.

  476. SteveM July 12, 2008 1:53 am

Liz is making research and investigate things that are not in my usual bailiwick — but to learn something, one must have NEED to apply. So I am learning too…

A problem that was bothering Liz was that the .AVI movie files would not play in her QuickTime. Once in QT, she can edit. Apparently the solution is in downloading the FREE Flip4Mac QuickTime components from–would you believe, the Microsoft site:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx

This allows the Mac to automatically open and play .wma, .wmv, and .AVI files seamlessly. Duh…I had it installed for the .wmv movies I receive in email, but did not know it did .AVI also…

Anyway, I have used Flip4Mac for several years now and recommend it to all Mac users– both PPC and INTEL units. The download and player is free.

  477. Kekoa July 12, 2008 2:01 am

Steve ~ That would be a good door prize for the RC/CC. Just need to fill in the blanks.

    Aloha Kakahiaka!!!

    homey,

Surprised to see that you are now “uncovered.” Sorry, but I never remember what you looked like even after I met you at Makino’s in Feb. All I remembered were your “big guns” arms, fit torso & that you were left-handed. Must be a gal thing… that’s why we like the pics of the player at UWs without shirts. mwahahahahahaha

Garret, thanks for the intersting articles; I like the one about bird song. I can see why Farve might want to play in Miami, no snow except for road games. One of the reasons I’m moving home: no snow, except on Mauna Kea.

Off to summer ho’ike for the halau… catch up laters.

It is going to be a beautiful day out here in the Northwe(s)t — blue skies, no clouds, low humidity, an highs near 90. Whoo-hoo!!!

Leave for DC tonight and will not be blogging until next Saturday. I am going to have withdrawal symptoms. I hope the TSA people do not do anything stupider than they already do. I do not want to go all Tsai-ko on them.

SteveM: Combinations of letters can be protected such as Toyota, Camry, Listerine, etc. Beyond that (as Stretch can tell you), I have no expertise in trade marks, tradenames etc.

However, common combination of letters like university, sports, football are common usage combinartion and cannot be protected.

Of course something like University of Hawaii is item-specific and cannot be used.

(remember, this is being typed early in the morning and the coffee has not kicked in yet).

  491. bighilofan2 July 12, 2008 7:13 am

    LizK,

good morning to you, and to all the other Tsaikos.

wuz reading up on Dick Tomey/San Jose State’s 9/27 game here. great memories from hi up in CC yellow wit dat bugga. i no SJS going show up to play. an i going be right ovah da tunnel, rows 4 and 5 seat 2, as our Warriorz cum out an go fo broke.

but as much as i luukin fowahd to dat one, i stay lookin to Florida. last year had only 200 Warrior Fans at La. Tech. day had a blast, an wit da hostility made it da mo enjoyable. wuz one scrap till da end. i don’t expect anyting less enjoyable in Gainesville.
    😀 Represent, Warriors!

  492. tom mui July 12, 2008 7:29 am

AL: Sorry can’t really help you on this one – again no expertise on it but you could incorporate as a non-profit corp but to gain 501(3)(c) – IRS – status would require quite a bit of paperwork including getting an attorney well-versed in the tax laws.

I try to avoid it myself – taxes, that is!

One thing I have learned is that it sometimes is easier to give the $$ through the UH Foundation and make it item specific such as “to support the football program” and spell out what it can be used for like “football facility renovations” or :”scholarships for members of the football team at UHM” and that sort of thing.

It is true that the UHFoundation gets a percentage (3.5%) for administration costs but it is a one-time deduction.

Of course if it is, say a million dollars, you are talking about $35,000 off the top but they do all the paperwork, taxes preparation etc.

If you are talking about $1,000, you are only talking $35.00 and that pays for a lot of headaches that you don’t have to worry about.

I suppose you could make it more specific like “repair of the sports locker-room water fountain”!

  493. bighilofan2 July 12, 2008 7:34 am

okay gotta go off to da races.

    hi ho hi ho.

  498. LizKauai [Believer] July 12, 2008 8:22 am

tom mui- what a treat to see you and Mrs. tom mui at the bash!

I like the idea of staying relatively loose and unstructured (except for trademarking certain logos) and contributing to existing not for profit entities. But who knows, some day we may be large enough to morph into something else and then a wartime consiglieri will emerge to do service to the Tsai-meister and his wandering band of Warrior Fans!

  499. mctruck July 12, 2008 8:25 am
