Looking back at ’09

I was cleaning out the files at home when I came across the news release for the Warriors’ 2009 recruiting class. I was surprised to remember that five members were on the All-State first team — quarterback Cayman Shutter, receiver Billy Ray Stutzmann, offensive lineman Chauncy Winchester-Makainai, and defensive backs Aulola Tonga and Kamalani Alo.

Here’s a look at that class:

• Kamalani Alo — Top special teams player; backup outside linebacker.

• T.J. Alofipo — Did not qualify; attended Arizona Western College.

• Kalani Brackenridge — Played baseball.

• Rodney Bradley — Started at left wideout.

• Aaron Brown — Tw0-year starter at linebacker.

• George Daily-Lyles — In rotation at inside linebacker.

• Lametrius Davis — Started at cornerback.

• Chizzy Dimude — Was the backup running back.

• David Graves — Enters spring training as No. 1 quarterback.

• Alex Green — Only 1,000-yard rusher in UH’s four-side offense; member of the Green Bay Packers.

• David Hafoka — Accepted a medical retirement.

• Tank Hopkins — Started at cornerback.

• Joey Iosefa — Started at running back.

• Brett Leonard — Started at left guard and left tackle.

• John Lister — Backup running back, key member of special teams.

• Jordan Loeffler — Backup left tackle.

• Chad Lopati — Did not qualify.

• Benson Maafala — Did not qualify.

• Marcus Malepeai — Backup defensive end.

• Veni Manu — Quit team in 2010.

• Zach Masch — Started at left end.

• Corey Nieslen — Scout quarterback transferred to Saint Francis.

• Deondre Powell — Did not qualify.

• Cayman Shutter — Backup quarterback.

• Destin Stewart — Met NCAA standards, but was not accepted by UH; went to Tulsa.

• Billy Ray Stutzmann —Starting left slotback.

• Aulola Tonga — Left team because of personal reasons.

• Michael Wadsworth — Top special teams player in 2010; spent past two years on church mission.

• Chauncy Winchester-Makainai — Started on offensive line.

Gus Tuaniga and Shane Welch have been cleared to play in today’s volleyball match. It’s up to the coaches to determine whether they are ready to play.

Pretty interesting to go back and look up these players and see where they are right now.

  2. Stephen Tsai February 12, 2012 12:41 am

And now that I printed the list, I can toss the files.

  3. cheepono February 12, 2012 1:05 am

That wa a pretty damn good recruiting class. Mack was under appreciated as a recruiter. let’s hope coach chow can take these guys to another level…

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

    ST

thanks for the list. I agree with 5 Warrior NY.

    Mike Wadsworth.

You gotta be LOVING what is going on in Hawaii these days. Please consider being a Chowboy!

    Go Warriors!!!

  8. Maleko808 February 12, 2012 1:35 am

What dreams may come… A very productive class for mac this was. Too bad the team came up short last season. Usher in a new era. Coach Chow will bring us there. I BELIEVE!!!

  9. SteveM February 12, 2012 1:58 am

    Lots of great recruits.

Those who finally wore the UH uniform on Saturdays made a difference.

  10. SAWARRIOR February 12, 2012 2:22 am

    Interesting list of recruits.

  11. BigHiloFan2 February 12, 2012 2:24 am

I think Coach Mack and Hawaii came together to create a great class that year. The feeling for me was, its us against the rest of the world.

Thanks for helping us all, Coach Mack.

  12. BigHiloFan2 February 12, 2012 2:24 am

It’ll get better for us this year, you’ll see.

    Go Coach Chow!

    Go Warriors!

  13. BigHiloFan2 February 12, 2012 2:26 am

The great thing about Coach “Chow is he inspires people.

And best of all, i cannot find any example of him putting his foot in his mouth. 😀

    Go Coach!

  14. mo808 February 12, 2012 2:52 am

Looking forward to seeing how Coach Chow develops the returning players along with his new recruits! Go Warriors!

  15. bleedgreen February 12, 2012 2:55 am

ST, How would u compare that class w/ this past class?

  16. Kekoa February 12, 2012 3:14 am

Credit coach Mac with being a very accessable person, that was easy to fall into a conversation with. There was never a time that I would happen to see him on or off campus that he would ignore me. He was always ready with his patented big bear hug.

The players that he recruited played up to and beyond their capabilities. His game plan may have been his ultimate downfall.

I will always have great respect for coach Mac and his lovely wife Heather. They’ve lived football for many years together. Not many couples were able to endure and survive the rigors of running a D-1 program. I hope they can enjoy their retirement years without the stress of college football nipping at his heels.

  17. myki February 12, 2012 3:28 am

    Hi Kekoa,

What are doing up so late! I totally agree with you about Coach Mac and Heather. They both lived and breathed football. I too will miss that smile and big hug. We’re entering a new era now and I hope that the old fans that are coming back and the new ones that are joining up will be patient and supportive of Coach Chow and staff.

    Whoo-hoo!!!

  21. slenzi February 12, 2012 5:35 am

ST, great recap on 2009 recruits. Puts things in perspective. We are still in the wild exhuberance and excitement phase of Coach Chow’s first season. Sky is the limit and no wicked slaps of reality yet. Lets hope everyone will keep their comments strong and positive in support of Coach Chow and the Warriors as the Spring surprises [remember Tyler Gronke?] come along and some recruits don’t qualify, etc. etc. I watched the comedy channel the other day, a white comedian says, “You can say the meanest, nastiest thing you want about somebody as long as you follow it with – bless his heart.” Later heard a black comedians say the same thing, only the tag line was “just keepin it real.” Seems to me that we can all learn from this. Mean is mean; nasty is nasty. “Bless his heart and just keeping it real” don’t get you off the hook in this Kuleana. Keep it pono from the start!

  22. wafan February 12, 2012 5:38 am

Mack got some players that year. Too bad there were circumstances that stalled progress this past year.

I am sure Chow will be able to mold the guys into one powerful unit.

  23. kapakahi February 12, 2012 6:43 am

A few things that I noticed about the Class of 2009….

    – Alot of signees….29 total

    – Quite a few UH non-qualifiers…..5….probably the reason for oversigning.

    – High number of JC signees….9….all but one who were major contributors to the team.

    – High number of local high school signees….11….compared to 3 for Mack’s last 2011 recruiting class (of whom only 1 qualifed – LB Justin Vele)….and 3 for Norm’s 1st 2012 recruiting class (Fonua, Lakalaka, Sai).

    – Only 3 high school OL signees (of whom 2 qualified – CWM & Loeffler)….probably part of the reason why depth on Oline was problematic last season….and is still a concern for this season too.

    – Only 10 (of 29) signees still on the team for this coming season….probably part of the reason for lack of overall returning depth and experience.

  25. d1shima February 12, 2012 6:53 am

    Great Morning All!

As some have stated before, recruiting is an inexact science.

  26. kapakahi February 12, 2012 6:56 am

Also noticed that no high school DTs signed in 2009.

Probably part of the reason why experienced depth at DT position is a concern this coming season…..only 3 DTs (Correa, Hanohano & Samia – all ILH guys) having significant PT…and only 2 other returning DTs (Friel & Satagiese) on the roster.

  27. tom mui February 12, 2012 7:07 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    Interesting list!

  28. Da Punchbowl Kid February 12, 2012 7:12 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Some great players in that class. Alex Green is da man!

Wonder what we’ll see out of this year’s recruits?

You are correct Mr. d1. Recruiting is part luck, part smarts and a lot of hard work, both for recruits and coaches. I pray that our new recriuts will make the most of their time here.

    Lookin’ forward to Spring Ball.

  29. Da Punchbowl Kid February 12, 2012 7:12 am

  33. Slugger February 12, 2012 7:40 am

    Good morning, gang! Morning, DPK!

That was a good ’09 recruiting class. I love those guys. Got to watch a lot of them grow since I went to practices then. Success to the team…work hard, study, play hard.

    GO WARRIORS!

  34. krump1_AKA_protector February 12, 2012 7:44 am

    kapakahi on 24,

Out of necessity, Coach Mac had to have a lot of JC signees that year. His stated goal as the years progressed was to move the emphasis to high school players so they could come here and develop in the system. If you’ll notice the last couple years, he accomplished that goal where the majority was from the high school ranks (one year I think it was about 19 from high school with only a handful from JC). Look at kids like Trevor Davis, John Hardy-Tuliau and other freshmen who contributed early-on. I wish some would stop slamming Mac already; he’s gone.. I appreciate those that recognize what he did and appreciate him for the special person and coach that he was.

  35. tom mui February 12, 2012 7:47 am

    @21 Slenzi

When you have to dis a man, it costs nothing to be polite.

    Howdy DPK, d1 et al!

  36. koakane February 12, 2012 7:49 am

morning and good sunday to all

super weekend and enjoyed being part of the sball crew good time

  37. jkjones February 12, 2012 7:58 am

kapakahi, you make solid points. most of all, as Chow mentioned, recruits must be evaluated or vetted prior to the chase. We lost Destine Stewart by committing an in-house undersight. Selection for athletic ability is one part but thorough evaluation is a mark of competence for the overall staff.

Many of the programs, including Boise State, place alot of effort into vetting including their own uniquely-designed questionaire for potential recruits to respond which will help them to profile certain athletes they have had success and weed out those they feel would not meet their standards. Its not all related to football. That is a huge reason Boise has had so much success in development of their recruits.

Much of this is management oversight and techniques. As in any type of investment pertaining to a performance product, you want assurance that it will function as advertised over the duration of contract.

Perhaps, that’s where much of the fan confusion begins. For some programs, signing on LOI day, marks the end of a long process of vetting. Still for other programs, the buzz of those signing on LOI day is short-lived, and the sting for not properly vetting will be experienced over the 5-year span following each recruiting class. it is haunting. The results disastrous, in terms of pukas in positions and lack of depth or attritions due to personal problems, team discipline or academics.

  38. BigHiloFan2 February 12, 2012 7:59 am

    Howdy Tsaikos everywhere.

I too am concerned about the uncertainty facing da Warriors. But thats part of life.

Coach Chow is on it. Of that I am certain! I admit I’m all cookies and creme, stoked that we got hope and a Coach that is talking good, walking good, planning good. Thats why he cleaned house, to give our minds a fresh start. And “our minds” includes the returning players.

    Yep, I got hope!

    Go Warriors!!!!

  39. BigHiloFan2 February 12, 2012 8:00 am

I think the words of the returning players is, after listening to Coach, “INSPIRED.”

  40. kapakahi February 12, 2012 8:13 am

#36, Not intended to slam Mack in any way….just purely analyzing the numbers 3 years after-the-fact. It is what it is…..can’t change the numbers.

Just like Norm stated, it’ll probably be 3 years from now that his 1st 2012 recruiting class should be evaluated to then determine whether it turned out to be successful one or not.

  41. Da Punchbowl Kid February 12, 2012 8:26 am

As a fan, part of the fun of following UH Football is watching the whole recruiting, playing and graduation process. So many variables each year, each season, each game and each play. We never know exactly how things are going to play out until its all said and done.

Many variables in play here, new coach, new staff, new recruits, current roster players etc.

Recruiting is just a part of the process. It will be what it will be.

    No matter what:

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  42. whitey February 12, 2012 8:37 am

“Met NCAA standards, but was not accepted by UH.” One of the items that should be considered by UH administrators for change, if we want to compete on a national level. We should have an even playing field with the rest of the schools within the NCAA.

  45. Wes'side Warrior February 12, 2012 8:48 am

    Morning/afternoon, everyone!

Wow, mahalo for the list, ST!

    Kekoa, your #16… well said!

Hope you all have a great day!

Gratz to Wahine Softball on a great tournament!

  46. Kekoa February 12, 2012 9:06 am

DPK ~ One thing that always seems to put a damper on our outlook for a super season is the injury bug. There have been some season ending injuries to key personnel lately.

Perhaps we should start the 1st practice with a Kahu to bless the coaches/team and both practice fields.

  47. Da Punchbowl Kid February 12, 2012 9:18 am

    Kekoa –

A blessing is always a good idea. And yeah, injuries play a big part in shaping the season.

  48. Kekoa February 12, 2012 9:19 am

    Howzit WW!

Georgia on my mind today. (Just got an email from a long lost classmate from Albany HS down in the southern part of the state). Old futs trying to recapture those good times around da bend!

Congratz to your son the ‘Honor’ student. Back in the day, it made you the target of the Geek Busters. Now days, without it…you struggle thru college entrance. It is a truly honorable thing to be recognized. You may let the leash out a bit more now.

The list ST put up makes you say hmmmm…not bad. I’m hoping that in 2 years with this recruit class will be saying, best ever!

  49. Stephen Tsai February 12, 2012 9:19 am

Wadsworth had indicated he wanted to transfer to BYU.

I’m not so sure he’s allowed to do that immediately. I think it’s like those flights where you have to return to your original city first. He might have to sit out a year.

  50. Think2much February 12, 2012 9:24 am

How do you rank that recruiting class when you look at the 2011 record? As a side topic, what was the point of UH trying to get to a bowl game when they always lose badly…to the point of embarrassment?

  51. Da Punchbowl Kid February 12, 2012 9:33 am

    #50 –

New variables in play. We’ll look great in that Bowl next season. I agree with Kekoa’s last line above. Those recruits, coupled with current roster players, NC at the helm, what do you think will happen? That’s the fun of it all, expectations and anticipation.

  52. SteveM February 12, 2012 9:40 am

    Good morning everyone!

slenzi’s #21 caught my eye: “Sky is the limit and no wicked slaps of reality yet.”

Yup, reality is like the turf monster.

But for now, we are excited and anticipate an interesting season.

  53. jm2375 February 12, 2012 9:41 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Nice list. Agree with Kekoa and others. I thought that the injuries to key players were a big part of trials and tribulations of last season.

    Onward and upwards.

Welcome to the first Sunday with no football. Are you bored and looking for some exciting sports action? Come down to the SSC for the Warriors-Anteaters rematch. First serve @ 5 pm. Join the conversationalists and the Screechers and have a rocking good time!

    Uh oh.

UH lower campus fire causes $600,000 in damage this morning

A fire in a University of Hawaii budget and fiscal office next to the Stan Sheriff Center this morning caused preliminary estimates of $500,000 in structural damage and $100,000 in damage to the contents, Honolulu Fire Capt. Robert Main said.

“The damage is pretty significant to one of the offices,” Main said.

The fire at UH’s lower campus was reported at 8:03 a.m. and 35 firefighters had it under control at 8:21 a.m., Main said.

    The cause is under investigation.

The office was full of computers and records, Main said.

  55. madeinhawaii February 12, 2012 9:57 am

Yikes… now when UH says.. “There goes the budget!”… they mean it literally. I hope no one was hurt.

I hope they had backups to their computer data at some remote site.

  56. jm2375 February 12, 2012 10:07 am

ST – loved your story on the stat analysis Charlie Wade is using. He talked about it during the “Chalk Talk” on Friday. He said the way Willert can get all the data in real time was like “quantum physics”. 😆

  57. SteveM February 12, 2012 10:48 am

Hey Al — I just realized I forgot about our McKinley High 45th class reunion at the Ala Moana hotel last night. Did you go? I wonder if hawnstln quietly slipped into town too… 😕

I was soooo busy following UH sports yesterday. 🙄

  58. A-joe February 12, 2012 11:02 am

    Insurance should cover the damage.

UH, you did pay your last insurance premium, right?

    Hurry up, go check!

  59. Kekoa February 12, 2012 11:13 am

    Go…go check um…go! Gun-fun-it, I bet ypu not.

  60. A-House February 12, 2012 11:14 am

    #58:

UH, under the guise of State of Hawaii, may be “self-insured” – if so, $$$ must come out of “someone’s” pocket – wonder how the State budgets stuff like this?

  61. A-House February 12, 2012 11:22 am

Is Colt B prohibited from participating in UH’s pro-day because he was drafted and played in an exhibition game?

  62. SteveM February 12, 2012 11:26 am

    🙂

A-Joe — I had to think about your #58 comment a bit. Now I get it.

OK, I’m off to forget other stuff…be back later.

  65. tazer February 12, 2012 12:29 pm

  66. tom mui February 12, 2012 12:40 pm

Not sure if the helicopter over SSC is a fire helicopter or news type. But that smoke is really bad. Traffic on the H1 heading ewa slows down at that point to look-see and then speeds off.

  67. Hiflyer February 12, 2012 12:47 pm

The fire department was there yesterday in the same area when I was going to the WSB game, don’t know if it is related to todays fire.

There is visibly a bundle to realize about this. I suppose you made various nice points in features also.

  70. kev-1 February 12, 2012 1:03 pm

Is the above recruiting class the one right after the Sugar Bowl year, or one year after that? If that was a year later, I am impressed.

  71. kev-1 February 12, 2012 1:07 pm

Watched the men’s vball game the other night. Haven’t seen one in awhile. When did people stop going to those games? I remember watching when Wilton was the coach and there were pretty good crowds. There seems to be much less excitement surrounding the mens vball. Too bad.

  72. Kekoa February 12, 2012 1:22 pm

kev-1 ~ Withdrawal symptoms from lack of football. Some will go into hibernation until April. Others will simply turn into couch potatoes (no offense cp!)…and yet others may end up surfing channels for anything football related…even the 7’s series in Las Vegas!

    Hope coach Chow notices him…

No worry, Sue, we got it…now beat it.

  79. Slugger February 12, 2012 3:00 pm

Fire at UH flared up again at 1 pm and it’s still smoking. Hope people can get to the MVB game tonight.

The bldg. that was on fire is the one directly across from the back of the SSC. Mrs. A-House & I spent most of a morning cleaning up the debris around it a couple of years ago.

    Off to the opera…latahs…

  80. krump1_AKA_protector February 12, 2012 3:27 pm

    Ipu Man on 77,

If I’m not mistaken, Joey Iosefa was a redshirt Freshman in the past season, so would only be a Sophomore next season. He should play for us for 3 more solidly-contributing seasons!

  81. Last Call February 12, 2012 3:32 pm

Any merger news coming out of the MWC meeting today?

  82. Ipu Man February 12, 2012 3:33 pm

    Thanks krump 1_AKA_protector.

    Good, good, news.

Hope the VOG doesn’t come around while that stinky

UH fire lingers. It is irritating me throat and I am

    down by the Convention Center….

  83. BigHiloFan2 February 12, 2012 4:01 pm

according to what was written last season, Joey Iosefa is supposed to be a soph!?

  84. papajoe2 February 12, 2012 4:16 pm

I think Joey had “home” problems so enrolled late or he was a grayshirt which delayed his enrollment. He will be a redshirt sophmore come next season. Alllryte!

  85. Ipu Man February 12, 2012 4:19 pm

Just so Joey has a scholarship…

  86. Bryson February 12, 2012 4:27 pm

Iosefa I believe gray shirted then redshirted as a freshman which would make him a sophomore next season…So we will have Joey “The Wrecking Ball”Iosefa for 3 more years…

Either Sue or Ipu Man brought the shoes.

  93. wafan February 12, 2012 5:08 pm

They brought the shoes into the club house.

Darn it, Sue. Learn and practice the culture.

  94. HiloBilly February 12, 2012 5:12 pm

Nike is spamming the wrong blog site….most of their shoes are too danged narrow for us locals. I have ‘luau feet,’ so I guess I’ll stick to my other brands.

Kekoa, when you come to Hilo for your nephew’s golf tournament, please give me a call. Also, I mentioned to Diana’s cousin, Pi’i, that you all were in town for the UH practice at KSH last year; she’d love to see you folks if you stop by again.

We can hardly wait for the UH games this fall…..hopefully HawaiianAir will be more reasonable then, but that would be wishful thinking. I spoke out for the ferry, too bad the rest of the ‘silent majority’ didn’t.

BHF2, your nephew & my 2nd son are on the same FD shift at Laupahoehoe (2 MICTs on 1 shift!). Also had a chance to talk w/ your cousin Henry & his wife, Keala, at school a couple of weeks ago…..they confirmed that yes, as we all know on the blog, you are very entertaining, and intense.

We have accreditation for KSH from today through the mid-week, it has been nuts getting ready, very little time to blog, but I lurk when can. WAFAN, I’m sure you can relate to this experience. I can hardly wait till it’s over so I can live a normal life again!

Have a good rest of the week everyone……………

Them’s some mighty feisty Aardvarks at the Stanley tonight!

Nice to see all the usual Tsaiko Tsuspects in the house.

The never ending fire was right next to the arena, the roofing material creating complications for our excellent HFD at the scene. Kudos to those fine folks. A real stubborn blaze!

    Good evening.

Not a good match for the Warriors tonight. Looked like they never woke up. Very small crowd that never really got into the match. Maybe they need some of Coach Chow’s discipline. Next up is UCLA on Fri & Sat.

Have to sleep early tonight, so this “Snapshot on this day in 2007” is for homey, who should be appearing soon… 🙂

    Comment from: homey [Visitor]

My first post in Tsai’s blogs was, I think, on the blog titled “Team remains unsettled”, July 24, 2006. Stephen didn’t reply to my questions comments so I thought he was stuck up. Now I visit here often and enjoy reading everyone’s comments. Shout out to Al for spending the time to chat with me when he was a guest blogger.

Stephen, keep up the good work.

    Homey:

Yes, I think the football team will step it up defensively in 2006.

I’m going to go out on a limb and also predict Colt Brennan will set several records in 2006.

Also that bubbling tofu will be one of the most talked-about subjects in 2007.

    Good night everyone!

…and yes, we are still in the running for the fehoko fanaika sweepstakes.

He recently built an extra large frame for me that showcases the richness of a fine work of art. Give him a shout out if you want one made for you.

Kinda odd UH did not back up the information lost in yesterday’s campus fire. Common sense to do so. Right?

Maybe the back up system tied up with a red tape bow?

  144. Kekoa February 13, 2012 3:08 am

Good morning Tsaikos. d1, up early this am?

  151. Microsoft Points Codes February 13, 2012 6:02 am

I think what you said made a lot of sense. But, think about this, what if you added a little information? I mean, I don’t want to tell you how to run your website, but what if you added a headline that grabbed folk’s attention? I mean The Warrior Beat | Looking back at ‘09 | UH football, University of Hawaii athletics | staradvertiser.com | Honolulu, Hawaii is kinda plain. You should look at Yahoo’s home page and watch how they create post titles to grab people interested. You might add a related video or a related picture or two to grab readers interested about what you’ve written. In my opinion, it might bring your posts a little bit more interesting.

  152. d1shima February 13, 2012 6:05 am

Up and at ’em, whitey. 😉

  153. krump1_AKA_protector February 13, 2012 6:11 am

There’s so much UH sorts going on and that’s a good thing. The bad thing is how awful the schedules conflict for those wanting to go to as many of these events as possible. This coming weekend, the men’s Volleyball team takes on UCLA on Friday and Saturday nights and it directly conflicts with the Baseball team taking on the Oregon Ducks in their first home stand.

  154. krump1_AKA_protector February 13, 2012 6:13 am

Oops. On 156, sorts = sports.
