It’s nice to hear reports that Tim Chang plans to return to UH to complete work on a bachelor’s degree. Unfortunately, for now, he won’t be able to help the Warriors. Coach Greg McMackin said he has filled the four spots for undergraduate assistants and two spots for graduate assistants.

Congrats to Amber Kaufman, who won the high jump at the West Regional today. Here are pix of Kaufman working out at UH this past week:

Does the total 220,703 seem low?
Well, that’s because Kazz counts only once.

dont believe so….d&fdakajc=sodexho, unless every person attending games in the past 12 mos were all unique and given the assumption there were no repeaters in the subclass.

Speedy recovery RK. Sad story about my alma mater’s football team jerseys. Don’t punish the kids – please return them.

  13. FloridaTed May 30, 2009 8:50 am

Those figures probably reflect just one visit each. Season ticket holders for football alone, plus Hawaii Bowl, come to approx. 400,000 already.

But overall, that’s not too bad at all, with lots of room for improvement. Facilities are coming around, now let’s keep on improving the product and great times could be ahead, well, I choose to be positive.

  14. Jon May 30, 2009 8:53 am

Which % group is “Jon” in?

  21. GRM May 30, 2009 9:06 am

From the last blog – student fees. If I remember correctly, in the early to mid 60’s, we HAD to pay a student activity fee in order to get an ASUH Student ID. This ID was mandatory for students to get into any UH sponsored activity. How do they do it now? I don’t remeber how much the fee was. I believe that the fees should be reinstated.

  22. d1島 May 30, 2009 9:07 am

What % go to the john?

  23. d1島 May 30, 2009 9:09 am

  28. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2009 9:17 am

    d1:
My niece, Jacy Yoshimoto, also is returning from Linfield today. I wonder if they have the same travel plans.
BTW, she’s transferring to Occidental next year.

  29. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2009 9:20 am

There are some other cool stats: 73 percent of adults who attended UH games last year bought shoes in 2008; of the general population, only 64 percent bought shoes in 2008.

  30. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2009 9:21 am

I guess that means most UH fans don’t want spilt beer to get on their feet.

  31. Stephen Tsai May 30, 2009 9:22 am

And 74 percent of those who attended UH football game last year bought fast food in the past week. I wonder if concession food counts as fast food?

  32. d1島 May 30, 2009 9:23 am

    Stephen,

If she’s arriving at 11:30, she must.

I wonder who she’ll be cheering for on Sept. 19? Linfield plays at Oxy…could be an important D3 game as far as playoffs are concerned at season’s end.

  33. d1島 May 30, 2009 9:24 am

I wonder if concession food counts as fast food?

Not if you go at halftime 🙄

  34. d1島 May 30, 2009 9:26 am

  35. madeinhawaii May 30, 2009 9:29 am

Wow… cannot afford season tickets on that kind of HH income. I think you barely get by no that.

  45. madeinhawaii May 30, 2009 9:35 am

    GRM…

Yeah had fees back in the 70’s then in the mid-seventies they went voluntary.. then they did away with it. BUT back then tuition was also $125 per semester or $12 a credit, or something like that. Oddly, the tuition has increased considerably, the school has grown as well as it’s student body … and it’s state of disrepair as grown even more staggering.

What’s equally bad is that they revealed their entire athletic budget is only 10,000.

Look who’s sitting next to you

I enjoy rooting for the UH football team. And look forward to watching the game, mostly at bars that televised the games, with people sitting next to me that give insightful commentary. These people, although strangers, are a pleasure to sit next to–they’ll point out the illegal procedures, blocks in the back, holding calls etc–and sometimes faster than the TV announcer. They’ll point out how the, “OL getting beat”. Or,”here comes a blitz”. “Watch the draw play”. They’ll add commentary, all of which I’m taking in–and it’s a pleasurable time. What you hear from these types are no blanket statements. Or curses. Or diatribes, like, “the coach sucks”, “OL coach sucks”, the “QB sucks”. And on and on and on.

Then on the other side of the coin sometimes you’d be sitting next to someone that’s a rotten mango (hhmm..whose coined phrase is this? …hint: “dey yo go”)…and it’s such a misery to listen to them. They’ll say the most egregious things about the players, coaches and refs etc. Maybe they have money riding on the game, I don’t know. But I just watch how they lose their inhibition..and all the ones sitting next them suffer. Just listening to them it’s just like incessant bark throughout the game.

Has anyone else noticed the type of fan you sit around at games? And which ones you can detect as being the pleasurable types?

  72. Jason May 30, 2009 11:44 am

My prayers for a speedy recovery for RK.

Students at UH still have mandatory fees to pay, including a Student Activity Fee, but no athletics fee. Here are the fees from Spring 2009 (contrast to Fall 2005 numbers in parentheses):

Studnt Govt UG Fee: $5.00 (same)
Studnt Brdcst Media Fee: $3.00 (same)
Studnt Ctr Ops & Rec Fee: $97.00 (40.00)
Studnt Ctr Prog Fee: $15.00 (same)
Studnt Health Ctr Fee: $28.00 ($17.50)
    Studnt Publication Fee: $13.00 (same)
Studnt Activity Fee SAPFB: $2.70 (same)
    Tui Res UG: $2,976.00 ($1,752.00)

    http://blogs.ajc.com/barnhart-college-football/2009/05/29/sec-headed-to-a-big-payday-in-2010/

This is interesting. What it means is that traditional the Rose Bowl matchups are between the PAC-10 and BIG 10 champions, but say one of those teams qualify for the BCS championship game then that opening will be automatically filled by a Coalition (non-BCS conference) team if one has qualified. This is great for UH, and for the fans of all the non-BCS conferences. If the veracity of what this author pointed out is correct then starting after the 2010 season–it gives UH hope of someday playing in the Rose Bowl (best news I’ve read in a long time).

Utah, Boise State to the Rose Bowl? It could happen soon: Over the course of the week I found out that there is an interesting little nugget in the new BCS contract with ESPN, which will begin after the 2010 regular season.

In past contracts if the Rose Bowl lost one of its traditional partners, the Big Ten or Pac-10 champ, to the BCS championship game, it could simply fill with another Big Ten or Pac-10 team that qualified. That’s how a 9-3 Illinois team got to Pasadena two years ago.

But in the new contract, I’m told, there is an interesting clause: The first time in the deal that the Rose loses one of its champions to the BCS title game, that opening will be automatically filled by a Coalition (non-BCS conference) team if one has qualified.

For example: Let’s say Southern Cal wins the Pac-10 and qualifies for the BCS championship game in 2010. And let’s say Utah or Boise State goes undefeated again the wins the Mountain West or WAC. That team, if it doesn’t get into the big game, would automatically go to the Rose, where no Coalition team has played before.

What’s the significance of this, you ask? It is another way that the BCS is increasing access of the five Coalition conferences to all of the games in system. Should the BCS get sued and hauled back before Congress, it is another way it can counter the claim that the Coalition schools don’t have enough access.

  87. madeinhawaii May 30, 2009 1:01 pm

Studnt Ctr Ops & Rec Fee: $97.00 (40.00) <– whoa.. 57 dollar jump. What is the REC for? Recordation or Recreation? If the latter, what kind?

  107. madeinhawaii May 30, 2009 2:38 pm

    Roysan.

That Rosebowl contract looks okay on paper.. but in reality, how often will teams go undefeated and qualify? Last season two teams, Utah went, Boise did not. The two seasons before only one team each, Boise then Hawaii. Both went to some other BCS bowl. Undefeated seasons are usually rare.

  108. Garret May 30, 2009 2:38 pm

Article about how Pisa is a better fit with the Bears than the Rams.

There’s good reason Angelo addressed the signing of Tinoisamoa with a hint of caution. Even though the University of Hawaii product is well-known for emptying the bucket every second he’s on the field and has been a very productive player for the most part, the new regime in St. Louis thought it would be better off without him, after watching him get so frequently overpowered by bigger blockers while playing on the weak side last season. Even though Tinoisamoa is listed at 6-1, 240, he played last year in the 220-pound range, and new Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo appears determined to secure bigger, stronger defenders moving forward.

In the Bears’ defense, though, there is much more of an emphasis on speed and mobility than on size, and Tinoisamoa, who was strongly considered by three other teams in addition to the Bears (New England, Buffalo and Philadelphia), could be a solid high-energy addition — provided he can stay healthy.

  109. Garret May 30, 2009 2:40 pm

Looks like Pisa lost weight and improved his play last season through a lot of hard work and dedication. That was probably a factor in his remaining healthy all of last season.

Tinoisamoa’s health is worth noting. He missed five games in 2006 with five different injuries that ultimately landed him on injured reserve, and he played in only nine games in ’07 before going on injured reserve with knee problems. Last offseason he made a commitment to eating better and working out harder, and he entered the season feeling more comfortable at a reduced weight.

During the season he made a concerted effort to keep his hips down when tackling and not use his shoulders as much. He also didn’t flail around as much, trying to make out-of-control, one-armed tackles, and there were occasions — most notably the Rams’ upset victory over Washington — when he was a true difference maker, but apparently not enough of one to remain with the Rams.

  110. Garret May 30, 2009 2:44 pm

    madeinhawaii,

Like I said when I posted that article yesterday, I think that the clause in the contract will be great for some MWC or WAC team. Every year since they changed the BCS rules there has been a MWC or WAC team in a BCS game. If that trend continues, on January 1, 2011 that team will play in the Rose Bowl and their fans will know that is the BCS game they will be in.

I remember how we didn’t know if the Warriors would be chosen for the Sugar Bowl, Rose Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, or Orange Bowl after the 2007 season. I actually had hotel reservations for the Sugar and Rose Bowls and had a lot of choices ready for the Fiesta Bowl. It is awesome that for that year the fans will know that they will be going to the Rose Bowl.

  111. Committed Road Warrior May 30, 2009 2:46 pm

    roysan16:

In regards to your post #86, would said potential change with the Rose Bowl take affect this upcoming game (January 1, 2010), or the following one (January 1, 2011)?

  112. Garret May 30, 2009 2:46 pm

Of course, a Pac-10 or Big 10 team has to be in the national title game for the Rose Bowl to open up…but that is likely. If not, we’ll have to wait until after the 2011 season.

    http://blogs.ajc.com/barnhart-college-football/2009/05/29/sec-headed-to-a-big-payday-in-2010/

Roysan, that is not a good example. Should be “UH goes undefeated..” not Utah or Boise 😉

  118. Garret May 30, 2009 3:09 pm

    madeinhawaii,

Only 1 non-BCS conference team gets to be an automatically qualifier for a BCS bowl. For that year, they will go to the Rose Bowl.

So in essense, it is still just one Non-BCS team that can qualify to participate in one of the BCS bowls. Then, I don’t see how that would help the BCS’s argument to preserve the BCS system as is.

Ricketts throws harder than a lot of the world series pitchers, so it must be location, location and more location and mixing of pitches. Alabama’s ace comes in between 58-62

  135. al May 30, 2009 4:58 pm

its not about how fast you can throw the ball.
    its about control/location.
    changing speeds,
changing the level of the batters eyes
ball movement, preferably late movement. (uncle charlie, cutter, slider)
    unpredictability

    maddux, glavine, moyer, et al.

sure if you can have all that and 95+ it helps. but, conversely if you toss 95+ down the pipe the good guys will bash you.

  138. Ralph May 30, 2009 5:10 pm

UH baseballers though throw in the mid eighties…their location was in the power wheel and to close to down the pipe in the latter part of the season…not overpowering, they got to learn to pitch- yup, location, location with control…

  139. warriorfanny2 May 30, 2009 5:12 pm

Stephen Strasburg, San diego state’s all-america and #1 projected in the draft, throws at least 4 or piches per game in 3 digits (100.0 +). He lost to Virginia, 15 KO’s in 7 innings, but was touched for 8 hits and yielded 2 runs in a 4-2 loss. It was the first loss for Strasburg, 13-1.

If u watched the Alabama pitcher, she kept the ball low and away, threw a screw ball and was called 5 times for stepping out of the pitchers lane (ball count penalty).
She does that to give her ball an angle.
Location and mix are important and if u have a fastball, u become difficult to hit.
The Alabama pit had great control.

A fast team can bunt on Ricketts….she is not quick to the ball…..let it go at that.
Softball is 60′ betw the bags and a lefthander can bunt on the run and reach 1st in 3.0 or under.

  142. Ralph May 30, 2009 5:25 pm

UH hasn’t had a slap hitter for a very long time…Milca batted first, no speed, did well as a hitter but UH needed speed up front to set the table for the 3,4, and 5 hitters. Milca would have been ideal at 3 or 4 in tandem with Taualii and maybe Warwick at 5. Warwick was preseason POY candidate, unfortunately she didn’t have a good hitting season.

  143. Ralph May 30, 2009 5:33 pm

Alabama softball coach advice to his batters…be aggressive early, don’t be stupid late…UH baseball should follow his advice, Kolten was the only aggressive one, too many hitters let a good pitch go for a strike. After the first 2 or 3 batters the hitters should know what the pitcher will be bringing to the plate…

  144. warriorfanny2 May 30, 2009 5:34 pm

I havent seen a Bob Coolen team w speed….and that is too bad. do the math–takes 1.4 from glove-to-glove on a typical groundball inside the bag diamond. That doesnt count ball-off-bat-to-glove….softball is made for speed cuz of the distance, bag-bag.

  145. Ralph May 30, 2009 5:39 pm

Arizona State softball coach- four years on the job, four straight years in the college softball world series and they won it all in 2008. he has a .822 winning percentage… JD find us some good coaches…don’t be satisfied with a winning percentage of 53% or under 60% in any sports…

  146. Ralph May 30, 2009 5:47 pm

maybe joyce antonio was the last slap hitter leading off for UH back in the days….now she schedules tournament for UH…

  147. warriorfanny2 May 30, 2009 5:48 pm

As Kolt gains more confidence Im sure his dad will want him to be more selective. But, yes, these arent major league pitchers in college and they do want to get ahead on the count and will likely grove the first pitch…. Fresno State’s Tom Mendonca was a first team all-america and had 33 bbs and 60 KOs, compare to Kolt–25 BBs and 23 KOs.
Anytime your BB to KO ratio is 1.0 or > it is spectacular.
Kolt had more ABs too. Incredible stat for anyone, let alone a frosh.
Im thinking his eyes-hand coordination are exceptional and if he can work the count to his favor, Kolt will be sitting on his pitches and will be making big hits more often. that means hands out front and bathead square to ball. In golf we talk about ball striking–bathead square to ball is excellent ball strike.

  148. roysan16 May 30, 2009 6:03 pm

The rarity of going undefeated..not for Boise (IMO).

In the WAC since the composition of the players on most of the teams in the league are mostly 2-3 star types– this is a constant–the teams that creates separation and loads up with a higher echelon of talent while every else is playing with lower echelon of talent has a greater chance of going undefeated. Boise and Wahine VB are a fine example of this. Since there’s a disparity of competition in the league a team running the table in the WAC and having some creative out of conference games scheduled has a greater chance of going undefeated is not a rarity as people think–or how coaches let on. Sure there’s always the concern for a few good bounces and key players not getting injured. But people throw around the term like it such a rarity to go undefeated–but in the WAC I don’t think so, especially for Boise. Because, frankly, everyone else is weaker than they are.

It’s not to say I’m pooping the Warriors but reality reigns.

If fact, I wish I could talk to a football handicapper, you know the ones who make the spreads on the games, and ask them what odds they’d lay on Boise going undefeated during the coming season. I can’t see it being very high, maybe 15 to 1 or so. Even lesser I’m thinking. So extrapolating from this the rarity of going undefeated is somewhat uneventful for Boise and more of an obscurity for the rest of the teams in the WAC.

But hey…if what I write makes the players angered…then who’s the smarter.

Kinda funny story…back in the day, there was a season when KHS was constructing their athletic plant (football, track, etc) and their track team came down to Moanalua’s track. Towards the end of the session, I was working with some of the MoHS kids on the high jump. Noticed a couple of KHS young ladies sitting near the HJ pit an doing nothing. I asked them if they wanted to try high jumping. They smiled and said yes. I think they were glad to keep busy. When they stood up, the first thing I noticed was that they were a whole lot taller than me! One was definitely over 6′. I gave them each a large metal slug to use as a marker and a felt pen to put their initials on it. Showed them how to set up their steps and approach to the bar. But, before they could jump, the whistle blew and it was time for them to get on the bus. They politely thanked me and were leaving when I asked their names. The tall one said, “Lilly”. DONG I finally realized who I had been workin with! Sure enough, I picked up the markers they had left behind…one had “LK” on it.

    2003
WSU Cougar athletic team successes in 2003 started with the 2002 football team, Pacific 10 Conference co-champions, playing in the Jan. 1, 2003, Rose Bowl football game against Oklahoma, losing 34-14. For the 2003 season, former assistant Bill Doba became the Cougars’ new head coach, succeeding Mike Price, who left WSU. The Doba-led team played in the 2003 Holiday Bowl football game. Held Dec. 30, 2003, in San Diego against Texas, the Cougars won, 28-20. The 2003 season marked WSU football’s third straight 10-win season, the first Pac-10 team to achieve this feat in 70 years.

    1998
An alcohol-induced student riot along a Colorado Street adjacent to the WSU campus takes place in early May. (Leaf was drafted in ’98) 🙄

  187. Ralph May 30, 2009 10:13 pm

maybe because ryan leaf got busted for drug trafficking and not because he was an nfl bust that WSU didn’t want his name associated with the school.

  188. Ralph May 30, 2009 10:19 pm

wasn’t too long ago that WSU held their on in football….one or two bad recruiting classes? Doba couldn’t carry on the work of Price?

  218. Pauoa Boy May 31, 2009 12:32 am

Anyway, I wanted Lebron James to make it to the NBA Finals. The Cavaliers are still missing a piece though to their puzzle and the Magic have more fire power. I’m sure the Cavs will be busy in the offseason trying to fill that much needed right hand man to compliment Lebron. Would’ve been nice to see a Kobe vs. Lebron showdown though. I think Lebron is the best all-around player in the world and Kobe is the best finisher in the world. Lakers and Magic should be entertaining though. Although I like Dwight Howard, he needs to stop rollin them bows on people.

  219. Jason May 31, 2009 12:36 am

whitey: I wonder if she can announce her coaches already. What if she has to post the job openings for a certain amount of time?

Speaking of which, I wonder if this implies that Tino Reyes is leaving, or whether it is legally required to post this opening since there was a head coaching change:

    http://www.pers.hawaii.edu/wuh/nadvert.aspx?rn=8590

Note there’s no listed assistant coach opening, only associate coach.

  220. Ralph May 31, 2009 1:03 am

i hope Dana picks a coach who can work with the 4 and 5 positions…Na Wahine and the Bows are weak in the paint on offense and defense.

why can’t CW pick his own coaches without an Ad as long as the coaches meet UH guidelines

  221. MeiLing May 31, 2009 1:03 am

Back from a family get-together…My brother tells a story about playing against Dana T.’s team decades ago. The guys got whupped…my brother said it was hard to guard Dana. Go Coach!
