Living aloha

A reader told us about this recent incident:

Outside a supermarket, a kid asked a man if he would like to buy a box of chocolate-covered almonds.

“No,” the man said, pausing, then adding, “I want to buy three boxes.”

The man paid for the boxes. But instead of accepting them, the man told the kid to give them away as a holiday gesture.

The kid gave the boxes to three people passing by, wishing each a happy holiday season.

The man, it turns out, was the new UH head football coach.

Living aloha.

I have always liked Coach Rolovich. Great choice for UH Football Head Coach.
    Living Aloha. Paying it forward.

Nice story. It reminds us that there are some really good people associated with UH in spite of all we read. Rolo is definitely one of them.

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…bootiful day.

good game last night. my patnah also was smiling…she one OU fan, having lived there for many years…but I told her the boyz went into the game expecting to win it and could have won it..so the loss was hard to accept…but the sun came up and it’s a new day, new challenge. got to show it wasn’t a one game effort.

Cool story about coach Rolo. Some people just have the Aloha inbred. Me thinks the kids he get will feel it too.

    IMUA WARRIORS!

ST, great story. Smalls acts not within the public eye are always rewarded- one way of another.

Back in the day, I use to live in San Francisco, around the holidays, I use to give the toll person a twenty to cover the next 4 people behind me (back when it was a five dollar to get over the Golden Gate). In a city frought with intense and constant traffic, its a small gesture that can literally make someones’ day.

Well, on one occassion, a person followed me home. I use to live right next to the Presidio in the Cow Hollow neighborhood, and its just minutes from the bridge. Well, this attractive gal, who was well, very buxomy, runs to me, as I got out of my car, and says, “i just need to tell you thanks, and give you a big hug and kiss, (which she did!!!) for that gesture at the bridge!!!” Who says kindness is never rewarded???? Have a honihoni Xmas!!!

  13. DaveLetterMan December 24, 2015 11:13 am

Legistlature…..a number voices have respectfully asked you to curb your propensity to proseletyse. You have ignored these requests. I imagine you are motivated by some belief that you are doing us a favor by continuing. You are not. The insane murderers who call themselves ISIS also think they are doing everyone a favor by forcing them into their belief system. But they are wrong. They are violent madmen. Your unwillingness to curb your behavior is also a form of violence even though you do not see it as such. A true man of spirit does not need to continually broadcast his views. This is simply ego inflation and self aggrandizement cloaked under the flimsy cover of evangelical zeal. If you are indeed a man of spirit please pause and look at yourself and simply consider the golden rule. Personally I don’t dig the way you are “doing unto me” and a number of others have also voiced the same. I would ask that you stop as you are selfishly making this blog an unpleasant place.

  36. Markazulu December 24, 2015 4:13 pm

Anybody else watching the Hawaii bowl?

  37. Boolakanaka December 24, 2015 4:22 pm

To convert or attempt to convert (someone) from one religion, belief, or opinion to another.
“the program did have a tremendous evangelical effect, proselytizing many”
synonyms: evangelize, convert, save, redeem, win over, preach (to), recruit, act as a missionary
    “I’m not here to proselytize”

Simple maxim of life–lets be respectful and mindful of others…..

I’m impressed with San Diego State, Boise State, and San Jose State. Utah State couldn’t beat Akron. I know Utah State is a better team, but I’m sure USU wasn’t up for the game and didn’t want to be in Boise. How can you explain that Utah St. demolished Boise St. in Logan? A game played by humans. Things happen. That’s why football is a great game.

  48. 808warriorfan December 24, 2015 6:12 pm

  52. A-House December 24, 2015 7:07 pm

while San Diego State was putting on a good show, it was difficult to watch the game with so many EMPTY seats and it will not only be the Hawaii Bowl that will be “empty”

except for the 5 major bowl games most of the games have under 15,000 fans — speaking of fans, how many came for SDSU and Cincy? – maybe a 150 between them?

yet, the NCAA approved 2 new bowl games for 2015/16 — how many bowl games are there? 35? WHY???????? what was the attendance for the Bahama Bowl?

Why is the NCAA so afraid of the Power5 Conferences? most of the upper echelon come from those schools – are they still beholden to their past conference? or, do they represent the entire nation?????????

still waiting to see how the NCAA will rule against North Carolina with decades of false classes sanctioned by the school — how can they not be slapped with multiple Level 1 violations including the LACK OF INSTITUTIONAL control?

imho, it should be no less than the forfiture of all games, won or loss, during the entire 20+ years and removal of grade for every athlete who took the phantom classes and UNC should notify each student athlete involved that they do no longer meet the minimum standard for a degree [if applicable] — also loss of 10 scholarships for 7 years and NO post season appearance for 10 years.

    harsh? damn tooting!!!!!!!!

just got back from the Hawaii bowl. $10 ticket with military discount. attendance was about the same as UH game last season. gotta support the bowl game even when Hawaii isn’t eligible. we don’t wanna lose it due to lack of attendance. interesting that san diego state, though how good they were this year, 11-3, didn’t get invited to play in a higher paying bowl.

  59. islandman December 24, 2015 8:50 pm

    51. A- House …. UNC is charged with many Level I violations. However, i think most of them came before the new penalty structure was approved on Oct. 30 , 2012 and effective Aug. 1, 2013. So like Syracuse, they may get more lenient sanctions than under the new structure. Syracuse was classified as a Level I-Aggravated case, but only got a one year post season ban under the old structure. UH was classified as a Level II-Aggravated case and got the one-year post season ban under the new penalty structure. An article said that no UNC coaches were implicated. So Roy Williams will probably get none or not much of a sanction. This is hard to understand when UNC was cited for a lack of institutional control. Under the new structure though, the coach is held more accountable. Jim Boeheim didn’t get much of a sanction other than having to vacate 108 victories between 2004 and 2014 and having to give up, after an appeal, two scholarships per year for four years.

Buffalo is a lot easier to root for.

If Joey Iosefa makes the playoff roster, and Coach Belichick utilizes him, I’m rooting for the Patriots, which amazes me, because I think there is some truth to their multiple controversies.

At the time, I thought Belichick killed Salas’ career by trading for him, and never allowing him to get on the field.

If New England faces the Chiefs, it’s going to be hard. I like Alex Smith. I think Smith would annoy a whole host of people if he led his charges to a Super Bowl victory.

In Cameron Crowe’s “Almost Famous”, Lester Bangs(played by the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman) advises his protege not to “make friends with the rock stars”.

In other words, he’s teaching his protege the lesson of objectivity.

What I despise about guys like Dick Vitale, Digger Phelps, and others of their ilk is that they count Jim Boeheim and Roy Williams as friends.

If say, Stony Brook committed the same violations as North Carolina, I’m pretty sure we’d be hearing a strong commentary about institutional corruption from Vitale.

By the way, Cameron Crowe didn’t heed his teacher’s advice. He married Nancy Wilson of Heart.
