Iosefa moves to running back

Joey Iosefa made a big impact today in his debut as a running back. He had some powerful knock-back blocks, as well as some tough running.

Iosefa, who was raised in American Samoa, was a quarterback in high school. As a grayshirt, he was a part-time student in the fall before joining the Warriors in January. He was projected to play linebacker. But Monday, he was told he would move to running back.

Who wants two tickets to Friday’s baseball game?

To enter, just post: I hope you feel better, Avis. Now gimme the tickets.

Avis will pick a winner tonight, health permitting.

* * * * *

And while I’m sure Colt Brennan will be a Redskin for a long while, this is as good a time as any to give away a Colt-autographed Washington D.C. snow globe.

To enter, just post: You da man, Colt.

We’ll draw a winner tonight. And because i really suck at prize distribution, Midori7  will send the winner the prize.

Reports from the Aggie AD office say the softball doubleheader is a green light and set to go at 9am (hst). At this hour the skies over Logan are clear and the temperature approaching noontime is a balmy 35.
While snow is everpresent on this athletic site it has been removed from the field, airdryed by helicopter, brushed and groomed for play.
You get the sense that these folks treat snow in much the same manner our UH ground crews deals with rain at WSS or the Les. The Aggies just use an oversized air-blower. The difference of course is 50 degrees on the thermostat.
And while the conditions may be playable in this neck of the woods, indeed it will be a serendiptious challenge for our warm-weathered wahine who only feel these temperatures when they reach into their refers for frozen pot pies.

This is the same Aggie team that upset #1 Washington earlier this year and are 3-2 in the WAC.
To win, our wahine will need to more than just show-up and must keep stoking the fire with their hot bats .
It is difficult to appraise the adversity cold temperature brings to softball but typically, the field conditions could get slippery and muddy.

Lets hope, through snow and chill, it’s bombs away as usual for our wahine bows.

The conditions of the infield are a legitimate concern indeed. Earlier in the season at home, we’ve seen a lot of errors by our infield during games at Manoa that featured a saturated infield surface. It’s no true excuse, but it doesn’t help either.

Another concern also is indeed the outfield. Majam, Aguirre, and Puu-Warren gotta acclimate quickly to how that turf is when going after balls. One slip = one error = endless possibilities of runs scored by the Aggies and not to mention the potential for injuries.

Football team is on Kauai Saturday so don’t know how many Warriors will be back in the evening. I’ve attached links to 3 team captain sites so you can support these student athletes in their fundraising. You can donate, join the survivor lap and commemorate with luminaria. Jessica Iwata hit a granslam homer in the top of the 6th to close the door on Utah State and lead the wahine to their 29th victory and 7th consecutive win. It was Iwata’s eigth.
Kelly Majam tied the UH homer record with her 21st and Jen Rodriquez also hit her 7th.
The wahine had 10 hits , 7 BBs and scored 12 runs in frigid weather. Rodriquez had 3 hits and Majam and Grimes each had 2. Majam walked twice and went 2 for 3.
It was the 12th time this season the wahine have mercy ruled their opponent.

Jenna Rodriquez led the Wahine with 2 Hrs to LC in the 3rd and 4th innings, driving in three runs and scoring twice, Rodriquez also singled in the 5th and went 3/4 to lead all hitters in the first game.. It was her 7th-8th homers of the season.
Ricketts picked up the win (14-6) and yielded 8 hits and only 2 walks. Stephanie allowed a single earned run in 6 complete innings.

Quite a day for the red hot hitting wahine as near freezing tempertures fail to chill their bats. Not only did Kelly Majam tie Katie Robinson at 21 for alltime UH HR queen but her teammates also added 3 HRs and total 84 this season to surpass the former UH team record of 82.
Congrads to the wahine–alltime Bow sluggers– and to Kelly Majam for tying a former wahine great.

temperature reported in the mid 40’s. the key is, do they come home without a cold, change of weather can wreck havoc for tropical weather folks like us.

  111. Kazz April 7, 2010 1:06 pm

    Pomai,

Na Wahine WILL be in Nevada in about two weeks after they return home for the LaTech series.

Nevada is a shell of their past teams lately. Katie Holverson is still quite the ace, but she doesn’t seem to have the batting support as of late. Nevada has had our number in the past couple of seasons and I’ll NEVER forget that extra inning game we lost at home last year against them to open that series and not to mention they eliminated us from the WAC tourney last year.

***UH Softball TWITTER is sending updates from Logan Utah as we speak.***

  120. Kazz April 7, 2010 1:38 pm

I have no idea how good the aces for Utah State or Boise State are, but as Ralph KEEPS REMINDING ME…, LaTech’s Meghan Krieg has had the Wahine batters going bat_ _ _ _ crazy in the past. Well, not to get too anxious, but we’ve never had such a spark in the batting order since 2007 and dare I say, it’s a bit more well rounded from a slightly younger group not to mention that we’ve never had the offensive threat that Kelly “MONEY” Majam (PATENT PENDING 😎 ) presents.

Krieg could ruin the homecoming, but we could mess her up too. She’s experienced enough to take one game from us, but as we’ve seen, the Wahine have adjusted to good pitchers the day afterwards (i.e. DePaul, Troy, Stanford, CAL, SJSU, etc…)

  121. Kazz April 7, 2010 1:44 pm

    Mailepua = Brooks Baehr???? 😆

Brooks was calling the games for Papa Leahey in the SJSU series. After coming home from the game I watched the replay to check out how he did and he was totally enamoured by the performance of the team that Saturday, not to mention he did the piece on “MONEY” Majam (PATENT PENDING 😎 ) approaching the home run record earlier in the week on Hawaii News Now.

  154. Kazz April 7, 2010 3:43 pm

Wait a minute…. The 18 runs is GREAT. The 8 runs allowed what the hell??? To win the WAC we gotta clean it up a little better!!!!!!! Fatigue and the weather could be a factor though and I wouldn’t surprised if it is.

Still, very pleased right now!!!

  155. mailepua April 7, 2010 3:44 pm

Ok, 18 runs, 22 hits–5 HRs (Iwata, Gonzo, J-Rod, Aquirre and Duhayonsod), 7 doubles and 1 Triple. Iwata and Kelly both hit two doubles.
Jessica Iwata and Melissa Gonzalez @ 4 hits. Majam and Taualii three a piece and kanai broke out of a slump with a 2-2 performance including a triple, a run scored and an rbi.
Traci Yoshikawa was the only wahine to go hitless…..look, Im convinced, we need to pray for snow in Boise.
Paranaby went 2 plus, got whacked and Ricketts finished off for the win (15-6).

    HEY HEY!!!

Last year’s DP Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu got her first homer of the year I believe!!!!

Good to see Taualii still producing. We need her to keep pounding!!!

Some people got down on Ricketts even up until the first game of the NMSU series, but she STILL is one of the KEY components to winning the WAC. Parnaby is good, but still this is NCAA D1 softball and while on paper that doesn’t compare to the numerous international tourneys she’s been in, it’s a different kind of upper level competition and Ricketts has been here before as evident in Mailepua’s report that Ricketts needed to come in to save the day so to speak…

AWESOME AWESOME DISPLAY OF POWER LADIES!!!

  159. mailepua April 7, 2010 4:02 pm

This is a mind blower–after 40 games, Majam (41), Iwata (31) and Taualii (30) all have 30 or more RBIs.
    Grimes (28), Gonzo (27), J-Rod and Yoshikawa (26) are close….
Puu-Warren (17) and Aquirre shore up a firm bottom.

The wahine crashed the .300 mark in team batting and Majam bobbed aboved .400 with her 5-8 performance in the doubleheader with 1 HR, 2 doubles and 4 rbi’s…..yikes, these team statistics are video game like and should grab mucho attn in the NCAA stat pages as well as national recognition.
Hands down this the best Coolen coached batting team.

  160. Kazz April 7, 2010 4:16 pm

    Mailepua,

I’m not holding my breath on the NCAA giving ANY Hawaii team ANY recognition above the ordinary.

They slapped the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team in the face last year and we SLAPPED the NCAA back by EMBARRASSING New Mexico, USC, Illinois, and Michigan on the way to the Final Four after they deemed us the 12th seed and regardless of the outcome, Penn State and Texas were on another level, but so were we compared to the rest.

In this case, it’s similar if you look at our schedule. We got some good ones over some ranked teams and got beat by some too and we play in the WAC. Fresno State is no longer ranked, but we are and that tends to lead to the line of thinking by the NCAA “oh well, it’s because of this and that…” whenever we are involved with any national ranking.

We’re gonna have to to TAKE our respect and FORCE our MANA on others painfully.

The NCAA and others can think what they want, we’ll just do our thing. 😎

  163. mailepua April 7, 2010 4:49 pm

Makani Duhaylonsod hit her 3rd HR of the year today.
After a good freshman performance last year, Makani started the season ahead of Kanani but Coach made the change to Pu’u-Warren. Kanani has struggled at the plate and has whiffed 30Xs but has an OB% over .370.
She leads the team and WAC in dings (14) and has been steady in RF on D.
Makani definitely has talent but it’s Coolen’s call for whatever reasons.
Kanani has to step-up at the plate and peak at season’s end. We need her to get on base–she is followed by Taualii, Grimes and Majam. The trio have 36 HRs and 99 rbi’s among them. Great chance to score if she gets on base.

  164. Manoa Mist April 7, 2010 5:00 pm

I’m liking Iosefa at RB. You gotta have a powerful runner without a tight end to block. This kid was touted as the most athletic prospect coming out of Samoa, which is saying something.
But still think there’s got to be room for Chizzy somewhere.
Also liking The Beast playing for UH. With him and Bulla, we got inside scoops for the next three years on UH football.
    I likee.

  165. mailepua April 7, 2010 5:02 pm

When your team is a conference leader and you have beat three to four ranked teams–Stanford, Calif, Depaul and Lipscomb and have the National leader in HRs plus your team leads all NCAA D1 teams in HRs you will be recognized. Trust me on this one. The wahine softball team is like our 2007 football team with gaudy stats and a lineup that would make the 1927 NY Yankees murder’s row marvel at this teams ability to hit the longball from #1 to #9 in the batting order. Naturally, better competition will bring better pitching, still, the best part of the ride is the fun in getting there….meanwhile, enjoy the bang!

realistically…iosefa will probably make an impact late this coming season or next season. he’s more of a hit the hole and go guy rather than a shake n bake dude. ilaoa was both.

iosefa will only get better as he learns how to block and also make a move here and there.

he looks thick. probably be 245 when he is a senior.

  171. Kazz (blkberry_storm) April 7, 2010 5:57 pm

I think it was a process of elimination for Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu.

As a first baseman she wouldn’t have seen time with Taualii in there and with the edition of Parnaby she wouldn’t have pitched either.

At the time she was still in the order early in the season J-Rod was in at LOF and had problems. Coolen was super high on Rodriguez and would use her when the opportunity presented itself.

With Puu Warren, she can hit in comparison to those on the depth chart that can play in the outfield. While her hits have been far inbetween at times she has power. This leads to Makani losing out on the batting order as well.

Seemed like Coolen was more comfortable moving Makani out of the order with all these things considered because he found his new DH and one experience outfielder from last season that can contribute at the plate. Even though Puu Warren’s numbers at the plate aren’t that great, her outfield experience gives her the argument to be in the order and J-Rod as a JUCO All American was gonna find her niche somewhere and Coolen made sure of it.

Many factors by the process of elimination and circumstance led to Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu being out of the present order.

  172. Kazz (blkberry_storm) April 7, 2010 6:01 pm

To be clear I meant that Puu Warren has a track record at the plate in comparison to those behind her in the depth chart that play at ROF.

If Iosefa is already throwing good blocks, that means he’s catching on a lot faster than Alex, Chizzy or Leon did. They took ages, it seems, to learn the blocking schemes / protections. Maybe he has the aptitude for it. Also, if he can weigh 220 to 230 by the USC game (without losing any speed), then let’s give the man some PT, baby!

Who is planning to attend a UH Warrior road game this year? Please post on the blog or email me. This is only tentative info so others can see who else might be attending a given game. The usual logistics page is up at…

Don Weir’s preliminary info is included too. Note sure of the Army game tour package availability today, but is posted for reference.

    Great Morning All!

Forgot to mention that Coach Tormey ran a good ST drill for KOR/Cover yesterday that gave the opportunity for those Warrior “middleweights” who wanted to show their true desire to make the team….and for more well-established returnees to tee-off! 😉

    Have a terrific day all!

    HiHo….

    Good Morning All

    Re Iosefa at RB
Listening to BC with Coach Mac this morning talking about Joey.
He arrived at 195 and is now at 245.
He’s been working out a lot and one of the example Coach Mack sited was Joey had Chauncy(330lbs) on his shoulder and was able to “run-sprint” up a hill.
Like his potential of also having RB pass option along with blocking and power running since he played QB in HS..
Wish I could be there for practise.
