Linebacker set to join UH in 2015

7tfdkm1c0ainly3wThe Rainbow Warriors landed their first 2015 recruit, securing a commitment from outside linebacker Jonah Moi of Riverside City College.

Moi told the Warrior Beat he made the oral commitment yesterday.

Moi said he is 6 feet 4 and 240 pounds.

He said he will play his sophomore season at RCC ย in 2014, earn an associate degree in December, and join the Warriors for the 2015 spring semester. After that, he will have three years to play two seasons.

“I grew up watching Hawaii,” Moi said. “I always wanted to play for them. I’ve always been a Hawaii fan.”

Moi said his father was raised in Hawaii. He said he visits the islands about once a year.

“I like everything about Hawaii,” said Moi, who also has been recruited by BYU and Washington State.

Moi, who was raised in Redlands, Calif., was 5-11 during his junior year at Citrus Valley High. The ensuing summer, he grew four inches.

“I’m officially 6-4 now,” Moi said.

Moi also said he has played rugby for five years, beginning during his freshman year at Citrus Valley.

Moi said UH assistant coach Lewis Powell was the point recruiter.

  11. old808 March 19, 2014 7:15 am

Good morning there was a Moi, a running back, for Aiea HS who graduated in 65. I wonder if that is his grand son.

  12. tommui March 19, 2014 7:26 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    Welcome Mr. Moi!

  13. RainbowCliff March 19, 2014 7:29 am

Howz it Tsaiko Nation, early morning here in the city of angels as the sun is slowly coming out and the beaches will be occupied by sunbathers including myself. Sorry to hear on the news with NCAA investigating the basketball program. I know to well of this experience dealing with the probationay period 76-78 as an incoming freshmen that I had nothing to do with the previous team commiting these violations that started from the Honolulu Ford Commercial. Tough during that time as we had no chance for post season play or national tv exposure. Did not bother me one bit as I was a young 18 year old on his own in Hawaii and playing Division I basketball for the bows. No regrets to this day. If any of you posters are in the know on this basketball ncaa investigation would appreciate information. Don’t have all the details only with the assistant coach Akana being suspended. Mahalo !

  14. Ipu Man March 19, 2014 7:41 am

Moi Power to the Rainbow Warriors!

  15. A-joe March 19, 2014 7:44 am

Mahalo Koakane, Sailor Blue, SJmacro, Pomai, D-1 for yesterday’s Kope session. Great seeing all of you. A lot of challenges UH faces were cleverly solved yesterday. Just need the legislature to sit in on our conversations and implement them…

    ‘Gmorning gang!

  16. A-joe March 19, 2014 7:48 am

Bulla- Seems like only yesterday we were having a cattle call at Aloha Towers in the Beast’ honor, just before he left for Weber. Man, time sure flies. Good to read braddah chasing dreams in WA…

  17. Pete Jek March 19, 2014 7:49 am

If Reggie Torres was the point recruiter locally for UH…

  18. A-joe March 19, 2014 7:54 am

Good to see oldtime Tsaikos posting here this morning before the blog gets relinquished to the unknowns.

Howzit Wafan, Bulla, Whitey, tom-warriornation, tommui, Rainbowcliff…

Good size kid 6-4 / 240. I like the fact that he played rugby; now that’s a tough sport.

  20. jm2375 March 19, 2014 8:04 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Welcome Mr. Moi! Study hard, stay safe and healthy.

Hope all is well and that your health is good while watching your beautiful sunsets over Diamond Head, North Shore or Makiki. Always about the Ohana as this Saturday I will be attending UH office admissions Southern California H.S. send off for incoming freshmen. 15 will be coming from my recruiting efforts as the huki lau is on down in Costa Mesa. Over all there will be 65 students in attendance that has been accepted to UH. Will be doing it again this Spring as my goal is to DOUBLE my count. Much Aloha Kind Sir !

  26. A-House March 19, 2014 8:56 am

    RainbowCliff:

    thank you, thank you!

glad to see you posting again and sharing some of your experience with the Honolulu Ford debacle

dunno what Brandon Akana did, but hope it does NOT significantly affect the basketball program – if other coaches were involved, that would be a killer!

as always, best to you and family!!

  27. A-House March 19, 2014 8:58 am

    first for 2015, eh!

appears to be an excellent addition for the LB core – size, speed, quickness, hard hitting

may eventually be converted to a “rush-end” in the 3 – 4 alingment

  28. jimmy the lock March 19, 2014 9:02 am

Nice looking prospect. A few years in the weight room and he’s going to be a predator.

  29. Kapahulu March 19, 2014 9:30 am

Would love to see Reggie Torres Coaching Running Backs at UH.
I’m sure he would work well with Offensive Line Coach Chris Naeole.
Reggie could be the point man for Local Recruiting.

  30. jeezy33 March 19, 2014 9:39 am

    29. I like the idea… Doesn’t matter to me what position he coaches. But just having a guy like him for local recruiting would be a boost.

  31. PONO March 19, 2014 10:09 am

Rainbow Cliff are you involved with any AAU programs in So Cal?

  32. Da Punchbowl Kid March 19, 2014 10:40 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! ๐Ÿ˜‰

That’s one big Moi! Welcome to the Warriors, Jonah!

  33. boolakanaka March 19, 2014 10:45 am

Aloha all! As I know ST follows the Jets; did you know that Michael Vick is visiting their HQ this Friday? Word on the street is that they are looking for a proven back-up to Geno Smith, and with Sanchez being owed 13.2 million if he is kept after March 25th, things are looking dim for Mark “I’m too pretty” Sanchez.

  34. A-House March 19, 2014 10:57 am

If UH will stay with the 3 – 4 defensive alignment, may be, if he qualifies, is to make the Big Island kid (running back) anchor the middle of the Dline – teams may have to double or even triple block him if he can push back the 2 OL blockers

give the inside/outside LBs an opening to nail the RB and QB or even a WR doing a reverse

  35. Former UH Athlete March 19, 2014 11:10 am

I think Moi’s physique is the prototypical ILB in the 3-4. I like that he’s also a rugby player, so there should be zero issues with him welcoming collisions in the box.

The only downside is that it is a long ways away from 2015 signing day. But this is a nice start to next year’s recruiting.

  36. Former UH Athlete March 19, 2014 11:14 am

The trend of larger frame defenders is continuing. Just a matter time before it pays off.

  37. jacklegpreacher March 19, 2014 11:16 am

Is it possible for Moi to redshirt this season and come here in 2015 with three years to play three? would that better acclimate him to Division I football?

  38. jimmy the lock March 19, 2014 11:16 am

3-4, 4-3, whatever, main thing stop the big play and most of all the killer 3rd down conversions.

  39. Former UH Athlete March 19, 2014 11:31 am

Moi is a good blitzer. He should thrive in Klune’s multi-faceted blitz schemes. He’s going to be a freight train on an A gap blitz, especially if Fonua or Gener twisting in front of him.

  40. Tanman March 19, 2014 11:33 am

To me, it is nice to recruit good Hawaii players but if good mainland players want to play for UH and they are committing early, sign them up early like Mr. Moi!!

Mr. Moi, thank you for selecting the Rainbow Warriors Express featuring the Norm Chow Experience!!

  41. Former UH Athlete March 19, 2014 11:36 am

38… That responsibility falls on Klune and calling the plays so that UH isn’t totally predictable on 3rd down.

  42. cheepono March 19, 2014 11:46 am

If Jonah Moi redshirts at RCC this coming season, wouldn’t he be a 3-3 guy? He should consider practicing and working out with the team ala Woolsey to preserve another year of playing time at UH.

  43. Haleakala March 19, 2014 11:52 am

Jonah Moi, welcome to the Warriors. We are looking forward to seeing you on the field.

  44. Former UH Athlete March 19, 2014 11:53 am

Wait, never mind my comment about Gener… Forgot 2014 will be his last year.

  45. jeezy33 March 19, 2014 11:56 am

    36. Just last week the blog was listing every 5-9 LB in the history of the NFL saying how Tuinei is going to tear it up…

  46. jeezy33 March 19, 2014 11:57 am

    44. Gener medically redshirted.. He has 2 years left… And don’t base everything off 1 highlight… Every LB blitzes well in highlight tapes.. That’s why its called a “highlight”

  47. LizKauai (mbp) March 19, 2014 12:04 pm

    Still alive!
    GO WARRIORS!

  48. A-House March 19, 2014 12:14 pm

still early for 2014, but hope Hawaiian Air will lower prices for neighbor isle fans

however, don’t have much faith in them doing so – profits always before customer

    bring back Aloha Airlines!!!!!

  49. jimmy the lock March 19, 2014 12:16 pm

jeezy33, it’s been the case with almost every Warrior recruit, hype hype hype. It’s a feel good thing. Makes the world a little more bearable.

Wait till the season starts and then we may see the demons come out.

  50. jimmy the lock March 19, 2014 12:17 pm

    ๐Ÿ˜ˆ ๐Ÿ‘ฟ

  51. A-House March 19, 2014 12:18 pm

    so #45:

    what’s your point?

if 5’9″ LBers can do the job – what’s wrong with that?

has nothing to do with a 6’4″ 240# LB who has committed for 2015.

besides, the LB coach will have the final say on who plays and who warms the bench

  52. SteveM March 19, 2014 12:42 pm

    Good afternoon everyone!

Welcome to future Warriors, Jonah Moi!

  53. jeezy33 March 19, 2014 12:43 pm

    49. This is actually a good one….. But its just funny when the same people hype 25 guys up every class knowing at least 10 won’t pan out. Then same guys hype up the small guys being the exception to the rule… but when we get the big guys, we throw the small guys to the side and forget that a week prior, we were throwing out Corey Parades name and every 6 ft and under LB out there… You can’t simply watch 1 highlight tape, and determine a guy is a good blitzer…

  54. PONO March 19, 2014 12:45 pm

The more kool aid you drink the better you feel. I’ll take another cup. MMM MMM Good.

  55. jeezy33 March 19, 2014 12:49 pm

    51. Point is, you can’t hype up a 5-9 LB one week trying to name all the exceptions… then next week say, looks like were going in the direction to get those big boy LBs. Its called a contradiction….

It’s like someone saying, Yes! we signed a 5-10 QB. Next Russell Wilson, Doug Flutie…. Then 2 weeks later… a 6-5 QB commits.. And contradict yourself by going, okay, I see us looking for that NFL prototype QB.. that can make NFL throws…

Happens every year… Corey Nielsen, Justin Alo…… Taylor Graham, Max Wittek… Just listen to Bobby Curran.. perfect example.

19 times out of 20, that 5-9 walk on is going to be a ST player… the 1 exception out of 20 kids will be Corey Paredes…

  58. whitey March 19, 2014 1:14 pm

congratulations to the warriors on their recruiting start for 2015. last year it started with Daniel Lewis and they got a solid class. this year they start with Jonah Moi. Great start. Go Bows.

  59. Boolakanaka March 19, 2014 1:26 pm

The Moi kid looks like a gamer, but the area that is glaring is his upper body strength. 235 bench when you are 240 in no bueno. My man should be at least in the low 300s, at minimum. Otherwise, he will eaten up in the interior. You like a playa sole–hit the weight room.

  60. jimmy the lock March 19, 2014 1:42 pm

Not much details on the Hawaii athletics site but it looks like the sand Wahine beat Arizona 5-0.

I thought men are supposed to bench 100#’s over their weight or something like that.

  61. jimmy the lock March 19, 2014 2:06 pm

lol, just looked at some websites and it looks like the average man would struggle to bench their own weight. push push push…one.

  62. Boolakanaka March 19, 2014 2:16 pm

jimmy, while that may be true for the average male, the average d1 linebacker, should be able to bench press his weight 14-15Xs. Shoot, my old butt can still do my weight 10 times or so…

  63. Stephen Tsai March 19, 2014 2:33 pm

    Cheepono:
Good suggestion. But if asked to redshirt this season, UH would never get another player from Riverside City.

  64. jimmy the lock March 19, 2014 2:54 pm

    FWIW, Cal Poly won.

  65. Stephen Tsai March 19, 2014 3:29 pm

Adam Muema is on San Diego State’s pro day list for tomorrow.

little bit of info the missing plane seems people seen it fly low over homes…..n fishermen seen it crash …but no one did ne thing…they had no gas to go n check it out…Ripley’s believe it or not…or apathy ???

Captain was a supporter of opposition party leader…n leader was arrested a few days before plane vanished…leader was arrested 4 sodomy…most say was political….seems lots more to this mystery then we get here on news…..

Politics rears its ugly head if true….

    # 64 – Do we get a share of the money?

  68. al March 19, 2014 3:34 pm

please be mindful that jonah moi grew 5 inches in the past two years and some 30 pounds. most of which is probably bone, water, etc. muscle growth had been more about elongation to keep up the growth spurt.

logically, what is sacrificed is muscle mass/strength.

  69. Boolakanaka March 19, 2014 3:53 pm

Al-no I get that and hopefully with a training table and consistent workouts he will make up the difference. That said, 235 for a guy that weighs 240, many HS players of that size, can do that at least 5 times.

  70. Old School Dave March 19, 2014 4:22 pm

Probably a misprint and Moi really benches 335 lbs.

  71. NorthShoreFan March 19, 2014 4:27 pm

    Guud Afternoon Tsaikos…bootiful day

Gret to see more Warriors joining in the program….Moi Warriors da betta!

    IMUA WARRIORS…IMUA!

  72. Boolakanaka March 19, 2014 4:33 pm

70, good to hear and that makes sense. I thought it was a bit odd; these days many kickers do that weight easily.

  73. tommui March 19, 2014 5:11 pm

    SandWahine beat Arizona 5-0

Unfortunately, they lost to #2 USC 3-2.

  74. Hodad March 19, 2014 6:39 pm

For those asking for Reggie Torres. You have to have a college degree to coach at UH as you are part of the faculty. Like that everywhere. I do not think Torres has a degree. Please correct me if I am wrong. I mean June Jones degree was from some correspondence school.

  75. NorthShoreFan March 19, 2014 6:50 pm

    Wasn’t he teaching at Kahuku?

  76. tommui March 19, 2014 7:31 pm

It used to be – and I do not know if it is still true – that a head coach at a high school had to be a certified teacher – and of course, a certified teacher would have a college degree.

  77. el burro sabio March 19, 2014 8:42 pm

    Coaches are not faculty
