Let's make a deal

In a span of a little more than two weeks, the Warriors addressed their concerns in the defensive secondary, restocked the receiver corps, and hired a former head coach who should improve special teams and provide stability on the sidelines and meeting rooms.

Now UH must find a resolution to the very hush-hush contract negotiations with head coach Greg McMackin, who is seeking an extension on a five-year contract that expires after the 2012 season, as well as raises for his assistant coaches.

The Warriors’ recruiting was not hindered by his dwindling contract — and, subsequently, the security of his assistant coaches — but at some point, that could become a factor.

It would be nice if a decision could be made sooner rather than later.

    First?

    Yes, let’s make a deal!

    Yup – I agree …

  5. al February 19, 2011 1:41 am

i imagine that a deal should be struck for the good of the program’s future.
i am not sure that these days if a guaranteed contract is of the norm especially in the coaching profession.

    a classic “catch 22”.
and a sort of damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

perhaps a two year extension with a no guarantee salary or some kind of minimal buyout may be in order here. tough times for all state of hawaii entities to give out such a contract binding payout. a modest pay increase should accompany any extension, especially since mack took a voluntary 7% pay cut. (hey, maybe in lieu of a pay increase let him live on college hill since the uh president doesn’t)

agree to asst coaches pay increases to bring them up to mwc conference comparable salaries. perhaps paying out at an amount close to the median levels with some incentives that are fair, attainable, and again comparable. include some kind of auto rehire process with a built in increase of pay range based upon inflationary tables.

    okay…nuff said.

  6. al February 19, 2011 1:50 am

    sorry…last one.

better to make the deal before summer, coaches can clear their heads and focus on the job ahead. recruiting for next has already begun and i would expect that many a student/athlete and parent would want the assurance that these coaches will be around to see their son through.

no one would expect negotiations to continue through august when camp opens.

we should or could take the wac outright this coming year and we could end up with 12 wins. seal the deal now or pay even more money later as back to back double digit wins will command more money.

  7. al February 19, 2011 1:54 am

mack has been going through growing pains as a first time d1 head coach.
he has made positive changes at the end of each year to address the seeming weaknesses.
he has begun to surround himself with great help.
he has learned to delegate responsibilites to his staff.
he has an angel on his shoulder.

  8. ai-eee-soos February 19, 2011 2:09 am

I expect that Tomey will be on the sidelines to ‘shepherd’ the Special Teams.

This enables Mack to have Tomey (and Shaw), on the sidelines,

to help him MANAGE the game.

No more “what the hell is going on, here” moments.

  9. 99club February 19, 2011 2:31 am

    Good morning Tsaikos-

al, I believe post #6 is spot on. I’d be surprised if Mack signed a contract extension before the end of the 2011 campaign. Based on expectations of a double-digit win season, he’d have more bargaining power in January 2012.

Remember the Fumbler. That’s all I have to say.

  16. CoolEthan February 19, 2011 6:16 am

If the recruiting was not hindered, why did that 20% of the recruits that were being targeted did not commit to Hawaii.
UH is still not getting the top guys to stay home.

  17. whitey February 19, 2011 6:18 am

    Good morning Tsaikos.

  19. finder1 February 19, 2011 6:28 am

With the change in conference coming up in 2012, it is essential the the elements of sucess such as coaching staff be firmly committed. Players recruited to the Warriors need to know there will be stability in the program. I have had my doubts about Mac but I think that Al’s comments are right on. A great coach know hows to lead and assembles a talented coaching team. The changes made last year enabled the team to play at a high level. More tweeks are needed and perhaps Tomey will be the answer. The AD is very cabable and will do what is best for the program. He knows that the entire athletic program is tied at the hip to the revenues football generates. To generate the support of the fans, football must be at the top of its game. To do that a stable coaching situation is necessary.

  20. gigi-hawaii February 19, 2011 6:34 am

I agree with ST. It’s would be better to renew Mack’s contract sooner than later — at least by this summer 2011.

  21. gigi-hawaii February 19, 2011 6:35 am

How about my fellow Korean — Michelle Wie, who is tied for 2nd place in that golf tournament in Thailand. Way to go, Michelle!

  22. 808Fringe February 19, 2011 6:36 am

Good Morning everyone! I’m sure UH and JD will not make the same mistake the last regime did. What we need to prove going forward is that we can learn from our mistake, one snap and clear. Extend Mack and improve the pay for Rolo and Aranda. We need to do what we can to keep these 2 young, up, and coming coaches in this system.

  23. protector February 19, 2011 6:38 am

    CoolEthan on 16,

I believe that will always be a challenge for UH. I feel, however, that perpetuated success will have at least a slight impact on the situation and that the staff has been making small in-roadsx in terms of getting UH on those students’ “radar”. It was irritating to me that a player like Manti Te’o didn’t even have UH on his Top 5 List; heck, he probably didn’t even have UH on his “consideration” List. I understand why and I “get it”; I just don’t have to like it. But I don’t sweat the Manti Te’os or the Juda Parkers who choose to go away. I wish them luck, but I pay no attention to them unless they play against us and when that happens, don’t expect me to embrace them or cheer for them. I choose to celebrate the local kids who want to be Warriors as well as those lids from elsewhere in the world who join the Warrior Ohana. I look at those kids as adopted sons of Hawaii and feel more of an affinity to them than any locals who choose to go away.

This mornings SB game against Oregon with a scheduled 7 am started was pushed back 30 min something about last nights rain storm in Vegas

  29. papajoe2 February 19, 2011 7:26 am

Coach Mack is getting up there in age. To help him out and UH, wouldn’t it be nice if HE told UH when he would like to retire? That way we could “hire” a replacement coach the year before he retires.Probably one that is on staff already. Some teams do this. It would help to keep the recruiting going without the rumors that the coach MAY NOT be here the next year. Its hard enough trying to recruit to Hawaii without all the negative untruths that the other coaches spread about Hawaii. I DO NOT WANT WHAT THE FUMBLER DID TO RILEY WALLACE, forcing him to retire. Why did they take so long to hire his replacement if they already knew that it was his last year well in advance? FUMBLE!!! Maybe a contract that he has the option to retire upon 1 year notice. I’m sure that AD JD will figure it out.

  30. gmahoney February 19, 2011 7:33 am

Will the SB game be on radio?

  31. papajoe2 February 19, 2011 7:33 am

On relating to my last post, I don’t like the surprise that the coach quit or got fired without notice. That screws everything up in the very near future and we would have to start all over again. Some kind of cheaper buyout or retirement package could be worked out in all UH coaches contracts stating if the coaches leave, they need to give 1 year notice or forfeit their package.

  32. papajoe2 February 19, 2011 7:37 am

I was one of the few that opposed the hiring of Coach Mac, thought that he was a glorified carpetbagger coach with his history of short stays.
Turns out he can coach or at least develop coaches, sorta.
    He can win, sorta.
Not the big games, but he is well over .500
Time for a new contract? I agree this time, sorta.
But please make sure we compensate the asst coaches this time around.
    I like winning

Did not hear any local coverage of Tadd’s top 10 finish in his debut tournament on the Hooters tour.

Must we continue to obsess over Wie, who has continued to under-achieve, taken far more than she’s ever given back, and helped put the LPGA on life-support. Pardon me if I don’t get too excited over team Wie.

  58. d1島 February 19, 2011 8:37 am

Wonder how the slight turn to the right by the new Gov might affect JD and Mac’s negotiations?

Wasn’t there mention of changing the Hi-3 to a High Five?

  59. NorthShoreFan February 19, 2011 8:37 am

    Aloha All..
Wow what a great day for UH athletics yesterday!
Fantastic come from behind win by Na Wahine and Warrior baseball teams! 3 quality wins!

Sisto was robbed! Dude pitched a fantastic game and would have been nice if he got the win but the game proved the Warriors are one feisty team. It was a team victory in it’s purest form. Guys were pulling each other up throughout the game. Today is another day and another tough game.

Na Wahine got two toughies today. Hoping for a repeat of yesterday for the team.

JD got some really tough issues to tackle. Contract renewals for the Warrior team is critical but with the Gov asking employees to “share the pain” and take paycuts. How does JD approach the situation?
I hope those Warrior faithful with the financial means will step up and donate, donate and donate to the cause…

Anyhoo, off to a day full of manual labor. Should be able to get one sun tan too.

Relax later with some Warrior Baseball tonight….relax?…GOOOO WARRIORS!

  60. Kekoa February 19, 2011 8:39 am

Kazz ~ How ’bout having Homey step into the batting cage with the SB pitchers? They could throw their best stuff at him?

It would be a real challenge because he presents such a small strike zone. There’s not a whole lot of room for their ‘riser’ for instance.

Homes…Are you up to the challenge?

  61. Markazulu February 19, 2011 8:41 am

Raises for his Assistants thats how. If they do even better this year than last year then I say DAMN RIGHT!!

  62. BG February 19, 2011 8:41 am

    #16 CoolEthan

Bro’, all things need a perspective. I assume (that word makes me shudder) that your statistic is accurate, however we also know that NO school gets 100% of its recruits. I wouldn’t be surprised if losing 20% is actually a decent number…but I’m no expert in that area. I do remember 13-15 years ago when UH had a hard time recruiting OIA or ILH honorable mentions, or athletes who didn’t have the grades to make it into the university. To move up to get student-athletes who are league all-stars in CA and elsewhere and still maintain an 80% get-rate while going head-to-head with Pac-10/12, Big 12, etc. is quite an accomplishment imo.

  63. NorthShoreFan February 19, 2011 8:42 am

Kekoa…What a great idea! NaWahine Softball boosters get a chance to face off against Steph and Kaia….part of a fundraiser?…yea right! who gonna have the guts to do dat!?!?!???

  65. gmahoney February 19, 2011 8:44 am

    Come on, Jenna!

  66. Pomai February 19, 2011 8:44 am

    IMHO new contracts:

Mack – 700,000 – take the other 300,000 and split it between the assi’t coachs.

If Mack can’t live on 700,000 something is wrong.

  67. BG February 19, 2011 8:44 am

    CoolEthan
I wasn’t trying to be argumentative…nope. Just trying to point out the flip side of the 20% statistic.

  68. NorthShoreFan February 19, 2011 8:47 am

BG…all one has to do is check the Warrior roster and we have a lot of “local boys” from all parts of the continent and from down under who decided to “play elsewhere”, mainly for the Warriors. Some stay some go but that doesn’t take away the frustration/diappointment of not being able to watch the local boyz represent the 808.
One thing is certain, the kids represent the 808 very well.

  69. NorthShoreFan February 19, 2011 8:48 am

d1…time to get creative on this one. The outcome can make or break a good thing.

  70. BG February 19, 2011 8:51 am

    Pomai
#67 That’s logical but not realistic. We know that salaries are not based on what a person can live on. In this case, its related to what other coaches in approximately the same category are making. Obviously, winning teams will pay more to keep winning. I’d say Mack has UH on track for good years to come with if the last couple of recruiting classes are any witness. This comment would make more (or less) sense if someone out there has some numbers for salaries of coaches in similar schools.

  71. Kazz February 19, 2011 8:52 am

    Kekoa,

I personally would be apprehensive about having any student-athlete in direct competition with a non-student athlete in a non-competitive capacity as it presents the risk of unnecessary injury to the student-athlete and could have an adverse effect on them when the time comes for them to actually compete.

Now, maybe if the pitchers were behind protector nets then maybe.

What you don’t want to see is one of our pitchers taking a line drive to the body when it’s not part of a scheduled game or official team practice.

While the everyday person may not present the threat an athlete does, anything can happen and it only takes one…

  72. hawaiiansun February 19, 2011 8:55 am

#72 Kazz – not to worry if homey was in the box I’m sure he couldn’t come close to getting the bat on the ball and neither could 99% of non-fast pitch softball players. LOL You have to admit it would be funny to see either of them mowing down all the guys.

  80. BG February 19, 2011 9:03 am

    ‘Mornin NSF

Yep, there’s always disappointment is watching the boys go elsewhere. Agreed. But I was commenting not on disappointments, rather whether a 20% “failure” rate meant the recruiting was negatively affected by contracts per #16 assertion.

Is the mrs having a good time? Weather still cold I think! Should be back pretty soon, huh?

  84. Kazz February 19, 2011 9:08 am

    Pomai,

I don’t have to see it, I KNOW the Rainbow Wahine pitchers would mow down a lot of “regulars”.

Get some slowpitch people I used to play with and against that talk a lot of crap and they’d shut up pretty quick against women’s D1 fastpitch pitchers.

  85. Kapahulu February 19, 2011 9:13 am

Now that Dick Tomey is on the UH Football Coaching Staff, perhaps he could help co-ordinate the local recruiting. He is a great motivator and a lot of the new recruits may start their playing time on special teams under Dick Tomey. The future is looking good.

Pitching is a two way street.

The calls come, pitchers can take them or deny the calls and ask for a new one.

Coach Coolen prefers his catchers and pitchers to control the game. Kliebenstein has many physical gifts and she will develop a chemistry with Ricketts and Parnaby over time.

As mentioned, taking a loss like this EARLY in the season is always a good lesson for the team AND for us fans that sometimes have un-Godly expectations at times.

Panic button is not even part of the vocabulary right now.

I recall that when Mack was first signed as head coach, he stated that all he wanted was a 5 year contract with no extensions, as he planned to retire after the 5 years. Guess, he changed his mind and now wants more money and more time. Personally, I believe that we should have a younger head coach, but rolo and aranda are still too young. Not sure if miano is head coach material, as good as he was as a player, the secondary was never outstanding, just adequate and sometimes mediocre. But again, it will take lots of money to attact a great coach from another program.

There is always a flip side, and that 80% target is good, but need focus on the 20% that were lost.
The Herman Frazier spin theory is always being satisfied with a result and puffing up the other figure to make it look like a glory hole.

That 20% that was lost ( Coach McMackins % quote) is what needs to be addressed for a new direction in securing those top quys. The MWC is now a step up in quality opponents, so recruiting commitments need to step up also.

So, are you saying that 100% should be the goal? If you are, I agree. However, I’m also saying that it’s not realistic. I think you agree that personal agendas differ. No matter how persuasive coaches are (and if all schools were equal lol) some kids just need to experience a different environment. Either for personal growth by being on their own, or simply just to experience the world outside of Hawaii. I’m saying look at the bigger picture. If the success rate is good (based on internal goals or comparable schools) and the recruiting classes are as good as recent years, don’t sweat it. In a world where there are X amount of resources, if the coaches spend more time/energy to keep the 20% that don’t want to stay, that means there’s less time/energy to recruit those kids that we are getting. That might mean an adverse impact elsewhere. Trust the coaches.

    Replacements notes:
Sharla is certainly making an impact w her hitting. As far as pitch-signals, hopefully that will improve w time as she develops a knack to spot batter-hitting tendencies. Gotta like the way she hustles on the basepaths.
jasey jensen has made 3-errors in the of, but, she is getting on base with a .400 ob average. that is better than what pu’u-warren was averaging for most of last season until her hbp count started to mount in the later part of the season.

good to see sarah w a solid hit today. makani continues to struggle at the plate and remains hitless. 1B is still wide open as is 2b. you can see the positive effort kaile and dara are making in the box as well as w their gloves. hopefully one of them will break-out.

With Iwata and Aquirre continuing to pound, i suspect more pitchers will challenge kelly. Majam is doing as much damage with her ob average, close to .800, which includes 14 bbs,
2 hbp and 7 hits. if KM regains her strength to where she wants to be, watchout!

  139. Garret February 19, 2011 10:55 am

    CoolEthan,

If you were following the other sites and read some articles in the Star-Advertiser, it was clear that well more than 20% of the players that UH offered chose other schools. UH even hosted a number of recruits on recruiting visits that chose other schools, so 20% is quite a big understatement.

However, *no* UH team over the past few decades has gotten anything close to 80% signees for their top targets. Recruiting out of the WAC is a lot harder than recruiting out of the Pac-10 and Big 12. The facilities aren’t comparable also. If UH actually was able to get 80% of the players they first offered, that would be amazing. However, in past years many of the players offered after other recruits chose other schools have turned out to have great college careers at UH…in many cases, UH was lucky that other players turned them down.

Even Oklahoma, Notre Dame, USC, and Florida don’t get 80% of the recruits they offer. Saying that 80% could be a bad sign of recruiting is not realistic to me.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

    GO WAHINES!! Ouch.

I agree w/ Liz. I trust in JD. He’s not the Fumbler. It’ll get done and it’ll be a good contract for both sides. All contracts for HCs that JD has negotiated are attainable, measurable and accountable. I’m pretty sure that Wade & Arnold have attendance incentives.

Re: kids going away. You’ll never get all of them. No school does, not even USC. Kids want to go away and some may not ever come back. I say good luck to them and have a nice life. Many of our athletes not from Hawaii say they love it here and plan to stay (or come back after playing professionally). Brennon Dyer, for one. He says he never felt at home in California, but feels right at home here. He wants to come back here after playing in Europe for a few years.

  142. Garret February 19, 2011 11:04 am

Fresno State’s Athletic Department has something like a $8 mil surplus in the bank. Pat Hill took a *huge* pay cut to get his extension because he saw that budget problems required him to take a pay cut.

After winning the Fiesta Bowl over TCU, his second BCS bowl win, Petersen took a pay *cut* to get an extension with BSU. He asked that facilities be improved and wanted the assistant coaching salary pool to be increased, and he prioritized that over his salary.

UHAD has a $10 mil deficit and horribly underpays its assistant coaches. The Star-Advertiser revealed the total monthly salary of all of the assistants, and if we multiply that by 12 we see that the assistants together make less than $1 mil. San Diego State’s assistants made a total of $1.2 mil until they boosted that to $1.8 mil to avoid losing too many of them to other schools. BSU pays its assistants more than twice what UH pays its assistants.

Hill and Petersen showed what head coaches have done at similar budgeted schools in order to get extensions. They showed that a coach who is concerned about the success of the program and Athletic Department doesn’t maximize his own salary and leave just scraps for the assistants.

My prediction is that Mack will take a reduced salary (which I would include big incentive clauses) to get an extension and that a buyout clause (which it seems that everybody EXCEPT UH has with their head coaches) would be included. I would hope that Mack could make the same amount or more with a 10-win season in the MWC than he makes now. Rewarding success is important, as success brings in more revenue. Guaranteeing a salary that UH cannot afford that leaves nothing for the assistants is not the way to go…and I don’t think that will happen.

    I missed number 6

  144. Derek February 19, 2011 11:29 am

Pride, no I’m not going to say. This is out of respect to Coach Mack. It’s up to him and Jim Donavan on any extension. He has 2 years left on his 5 yr. contract. I’m sure JD and Mack will huddle on what Mack wants to do in the future and what the vision of UH football is. I have no doubts that UH will be the favorite to win the WAC this year, with Boise St. gone to the MWC. When the time comes that we need to get another Head Coach, I don’t think there will be any shortage of qualified applicants.

Wait, I thought we had zero de-commits this recruiting period? If that’s the case, then we got 100% signed, with no one stolen away at the last minute. The 20% might’ve been those that we were interested in, but they never gave us a verbal that they’d be coming to UH. So, in the end, didn’t we get everyone who we expected to get? Or, did I read something different on LoI Day?

A very steep curve in salary levels going from FCS (DI-AA) to FBS (DI-A)

Idaho State’s new HC just had his salary approved at $135k base to $216k max with incentives.

    Speaking of Petersen

Boise State coach Chris Petersen has been rewarded after completing another impressive season.

The state Board of Education voted 5-2 Thursday to give Petersen a $50,000 bonus and a $35,000 bump in annual salary after the Broncos compiled a 12-1 record and ended the season in the Top 10 again.

The increase raises Petersen’s overall bonus for 2010 to $125,000.

The pay raise will apply to each of the five years remaining on his contract.

Petersen earned $1.49 million in 2010. The raise will bump total compensation to $1.52 million in 2011 and escalate to $1.87 million in 2015.

Athletic director Gene Bleymaier told the board Petersen is one of college football’s most successful coaches the last five years and extra cash will help keep him in Boise.

like lombardi always said, “it’s not how many times you get knocked, but how many times you pick yourself up”. oregon shellacking was a silver-lining loss. way to cat-bounce, stephanie and wahine!

  207. Derek February 19, 2011 2:12 pm

“Make me an NBA All Star RC”. Mahalo.

  211. tommui February 19, 2011 2:18 pm

“Make me an NBA All Star RC”.

    GO BOWS
    GO WAHINE

  212. jm2375 February 19, 2011 2:18 pm

Congrats to the Wahine and Basketbows! Now, mvb Warriors, beat dem Bruins!

  213. Lanaiboy February 19, 2011 2:22 pm

Looks like the first base hitting problem for Wahine is solved. Robinson got three hits against Stanford; Makani, unfortunately, is still hitless this year. Now we need hitting from the 2nd base and right field positions; if that happens Na Wahine will really be formidable.

  214. HiFlyer February 19, 2011 2:25 pm

Congrats to the Wahine Softball beating Stanford 6 – 1.

  215. KeoniO February 19, 2011 2:26 pm

Make me an NBA All Star, RC. XL.

    Mahalo RC!

  216. Derek February 19, 2011 2:29 pm

Let Zamora play second base again and Rodriguez back in RF. Give Enrique a chance to be the DH for awhile. Good to experiement in the early going and let’s see what happens.

  217. hawaiiansun February 19, 2011 2:29 pm

when iawata went nutz on the road last year in the high altitudes, some pundits commented about the high climes and questionable competition. still, jess was selected NPOW. this year, she has absolutely, gone outrageously-insane weilding her bat– in a national marquee tournament featuring quality opponents, standard fields and playing conditions.
remarkable performance in this tournament by wahine jess iwata.

  218. papajoe2 February 19, 2011 2:34 pm

“Make me an NBA All Star, RC.” 2xl

  219. Pomai February 19, 2011 2:36 pm

remarkable performance by all of Na Wahine. One thing I like about this team is It’s a team win and a Team loss.

  220. papajoe2 February 19, 2011 2:37 pm

I lazy to look em up. Was today’s soft ball opponents ranked? I think Pac 10 has something like 8 of 10 teams ranked. What rank were the softbow opponents?

  221. Kazz_DROID.X February 19, 2011 2:39 pm

Ashley Chinn is exactly the kind of pitcher the Wahine destroy.

    Chinn has an amazing fastball.

    Thats it.

Chinn can be erratic, wild pitches, and the occasional so-so change up off speed stuff.

Very proud of the team today. Iwata is MVP of this road trip thus far and Stephanie Ricketts bounced back.

  222. Pomai February 19, 2011 2:40 pm

Two things that suck (for me) about this years Softball schedule is that the Fresnecks game is an away game and the last two games of the season are on the road.

Wanted one more time to see Marggie have a cow when the lose.

  223. Ralph February 19, 2011 2:41 pm

    ESPN rankings

    Oregon 14, Stanford 18

  224. d1島 February 19, 2011 2:42 pm

    Pomai,

What union is the SID rep’d by? 😉

  225. papajoe2 February 19, 2011 2:45 pm

Thanks Ralph. Who’s next for the softbows? Any more ranked? Bring ’em on.

  226. Kazz_DROID.X February 19, 2011 2:45 pm

    Lanaiboy,

Not completely solved yet, but they are addressing it. 😎

  227. hawaiiansun February 19, 2011 2:47 pm

nakao is playing good D and has over .438 ob ave. imo, she is the leading replacement candidate for 2b. joselyn is still looking for her first hit and is limited to DH since she doesnt play 2b or rf. sharla is doing very good so catcher is out, save an emergency. i believe zamora is being groomed to take over at 3B when melissa completes her eligibility after this season. that leaves nakao and dara vying for second. Sara is starting to hit w consistency and Makani hasnt put it together yet.

the position up for grabs, imo, is rf. jensen aint hitting and her ob ave is below .280. coolen is taking a hard look at jensen, prolly bc she is a senior. but if joselyn starts to hit–u can bet coach would move jenna to rf and Joselyn to DP.

coach is going to ride his options on this road trip. why not? he can get a good view of who can play under quality pressure on the road.
he has until conference play to make his decision. he may decide to platoon. who knows. one thing for sure, whomever steps up–will get it. sharla for sure. nakao is steady and robinson is showing flash but she better dig-out those one-hoppers to first.

  230. RainbowCliff February 19, 2011 2:54 pm

All RIGHT good folks who have posted for the shirt contest !

REMEMBER this contest needs the shirt size to go along with your name.

KeoniO and Papajoe2 you have pass the class as Derek, Kawika49, Kapahulu
and Tommui you must RETAKE the examination as SHIRT SIZES must accompany
your entry. You have FIVE size categories to choose from. Each name post will go
into that size category. Percentages higher of winning from a LARGER pool size of
shirts as oppose to one size.

THANK YOU as I will keep talley of all posts but I need the size shirt !

  231. wafan February 19, 2011 2:55 pm

    Good after noon!

Make me an NBA All Star, RC.

    xxl, please.

  232. wafan February 19, 2011 2:57 pm

    Thank you, RC & co!!!

  233. hawaiiansun February 19, 2011 2:59 pm

#222, pac 10 only has 8 teams (wsu and usc non-participants).
6-8 ranked. hands down, best conference in college softball. next week we play NR oklahoma (6) and nebraska (26). no shortage of quality competition on this trip.

we split w OREG and STANF so we should hold our ranking. plus Iwata’s feat will draw positive national acclaim to the wahine.

kazz, asley chinn is a workhorse. last year she carried the team after injuries hit them in the circle. she has won her share against the very best and she is an outstanding pitcher every coach dreams of having. jmo.

  234. Koa-mahu February 19, 2011 3:03 pm

make me an NBA groupiestrike All Star, sexxxy RC.

    muumuu please.

    muumuu please.

  238. Kapahulu February 19, 2011 3:07 pm

I guess I pass the class too. Is there a diploma that goes with this?

  239. RainbowCliff February 19, 2011 3:08 pm

Chopsueyboy, way to follow directions. You are in the large shirt draw as KeoniO
XL draw, Papajoe2 XXL draw. How everyone draws in the specific size will make up
the list of participants in each shirt category which will make odds on winning favorable
    to many who enters.

NO xxxl shirt has been drawn so IF Joe Waikiki enter his name for the xxxl shirt and
no body else draw in that shirt category then Joe Waikiki WINS !

I THINK we got it now !

  240. Ralph February 19, 2011 3:10 pm

Nebraska beat Stanford 3-2 in the Kajikawa. The ace is Ashley Hageman at 7-1.

UH needs to do well against the Big 12 powers to generate RPI points, they will face California in Hawaii next month giving them a chance to win against 2 of 3 pac 10 teams.

  241. Ralph February 19, 2011 3:12 pm

Papajoe RC asking for your shirt size not head size, he is not giving out head scarves. 🙂

  242. d1島 February 19, 2011 3:17 pm

  254. Derek February 19, 2011 3:55 pm

    XL

  255. Old Diver February 19, 2011 3:59 pm

Coach Mack just did the improbable by winning ten games and getting us into the MWC which setup the deal with the BWC and some here want to show him the door after five years? I agree his contract needs to be set up with a smaller base plus incentives but limiting him to just a couple more years is ludicrous.

  256. RainbowCliff February 19, 2011 4:01 pm

#250 d1: My PLEASURE and complete HONOR !

Wait till Mr. Tsai post the picture of shirts. They
are MASTERFULLY created just for you good folks of Tsaiko Nation !

Going out with a BANG for the last shirt drawing contest. Nothing to lose

XL it is as it is just you, KeoniO and waikiki warrior drawing for that
size shirt. Interesting contest at this point with one large drawing,
three extra large draws and three double extra large draws. Seven
total as I am still waiting for Kawika49, tommui and Koa-mahu to
indicate to me “SHIRT SIZE” ?

No XXXL shirt has been chosen as that shirt alone stands out among the others !

  262. tommui February 19, 2011 4:18 pm

RAINBOWCLIFF – XL for me -thanks for asking.

  263. Derek February 19, 2011 4:20 pm

I wonder what Coolen’s reasoning for starting Ricketts again in the second game after getting bombed in the first game? Was Parnaby available? Just asking. Whatever Coolen did, it worked. Jessica seems to play better on the road than at home. Remember last year when she hit two grandslams in one game. Coolen did say that Jessica is the strongest player on the team and can hit it the farthest on the Leahy and Leahy show a couple of weeks agol. I believe it. She hit a line drive at home that went not more than 6 or 7 feet off the ground and it went over the fence for a home run. That’s power. Not bad for a young woman from Kauai. Not bad at all.

  264. RainbowCliff February 19, 2011 4:23 pm

kawika49: Got that xxl size as NOW you are officially in !

Thank you for re-posting that important information as FOUR names
    are drawing for that xxl.

Drawing will take place right after all star game. Mr Tsai has picture of
all FIVE shirts as I would like to thank him personally for allowing me this
    opportunity. Enjoy your evening !

  265. RainbowCliff February 19, 2011 4:37 pm

Tommui, got you back and your xl is in. Bowwar welcome back as your xl is in.

MOMONA, got that xxxl as you are the only one. Smart move on your part as
why fight the competitive shirt drawing field when you can be all by yourself.

You and chopsueyboy are SOLO at this time. Koq-mahu need you to come back
as your size is the only one from the first list of posters who did not list.

Twelve Tsaikos has posted correctly to the contest !

  266. DaMenehune February 19, 2011 4:56 pm

“Make me an NBA All Star RC” Large please!!!!

  267. RainbowCliff February 19, 2011 5:05 pm

DaMenehune: You are IN with the large size. There are TWO large shirts among the five. If contest would end as of this moment you and chopsuey will win. One large white and one large black. In this case who ever names draw first will choose the color of choice. 13 names are in as the “BEAT” goes on as I thank you for participating !

  268. Committed Road Warrior February 19, 2011 5:15 pm

    SteveM, d1, and wafan:

Thank you very much for the birthday wishes! Honestly, it didn’t even cross my mind until I got up this morning and started pouring through my FB messages. At least I was able to salvage it by spending the day in the city visiting a couple museums and meeting up with some friends for a late lunch/early dinner.

Now at home and will try (again) to stay up for tonight’s baseball game.

  269. CoolEthan February 19, 2011 5:16 pm

Referring back to the 20% recruits that were not secured, several peeps posted that 100% is not achievable.
Your right, that’s is unrealistic, but there are many numbers that lye between 80 – 100, 18 to be exact.
The point is , Never be satisfied and please don’t spin. If you do, Herman Frazier has a job waiting for you.
Competion is great. Coach Mack has it in him. The MWC is awaiting. Time to work harder and secure those top island guys that should stay home and make the program stronger.

    XL is my current size.

But, I wonder if I should try for the L, since I’ve been hitting the weights and treadmill?

But, what if my treadmill broke tomorrow?

And what if I find some donuts to go with my cup of coffee every morning?

I better stick with XL! No worries… I’m not planning on moving up to the next weight class! XL it is for me, please!

Thanks, RainbowCliff, for doing fun stuff like this!

It is amazing to me that ESPN plans to show every nonrevenue sport that Texas plays…field hockey, rowing, etc., will have one school whose games are on ESPN and no national TV otherwise. The recruiting implications of that are just crazy.

Ray Seals, the football coach and athletics coordinator at Houston’s Madison High School, where former Texas quarterback Vince Young played, said the network also gives Texas a valuable selling point to prospective athletes’ parents.

“The sports like field hockey and things like that, you never see it on TV,” Seals said. “Now, knowing that you can get that kind of exposure, that’d be hard to turn down for a youngster nowadays.

“And now, if my parents can’t come down to see me play, they can see me on TV,” Seals said. “Parents won’t have to take those long trips anymore, they can just turn on the TV and see their kids. Somebody did a good job of setting that up.”

Grasping the possibilities, Oklahoma plans to launch a similar network within the next year.

Bamboo is grown in many regions of Africa and a test run of 750 bikes made from bamboo will be made, with large-scale production soon to follow. The bamboo bikes are lighter and stronger than steel-framed bikes, adapt to difficult road conditions, and can easily be modified for different needs. Manufacturing of bamboo bikes do not require costly infrastructure or electricity, so it could be an ideal product to be made in Africa for their needs:

    Redzone,

While this article depicts one of the developments that went bad, it really is nothing in comparison to how many skyscrapers go up every year. Part of the reason they can build so fast is because there are no unions and no endless safety/structural studies that needs to be done. For the Chinese and Koreans for that matter (don’t know about Japan), they think it is bull to delay projects for what they deem to be obvious. This is true not only in construction but most industries.

You may wonder how this benefit the average citizen then, well it turns out with the profits government make on the sale of land for a period of time is calculated so that every citizen (newborn or near death) of a particular city, gets a lump some of money that is noteworthy. Plus they get a monthly stipend too for various reasons as well. So in Shanghai, if you are fortunate enough to have a residence card, you could have received 30-40 thousand US, and that is for each citizen. A family of four would have made over a hundred thousand. There is incentive…just have to follow the money.

  321. Old Diver February 19, 2011 11:16 pm

    #322

Not sure I buy this, if I was in that building I wouldn’t say it was really nothing. Also I don’t know if endless safety/structural studies are a bad thing, just ask the family of the worker who died.

  322. Ralph February 19, 2011 11:21 pm

Looks as though Tseng wins the Honda Classic in Thailand, she is currently at -15 and on the 18th with Wie. Wie is 5 strokes back, -2 for the day.

  323. Ralph February 19, 2011 11:28 pm

#318 and #322 that is why we need the EPA etc in the U.S. checking on Chinese products, eg. drywall litigation in Louisiana, tainted Mattel toys, questionable safety issue with paint or painted products from China, and in China if I recall correctly, tainted milk mixed with glycol (radiator product or by-product).

  324. G (China) February 19, 2011 11:29 pm

I’m saying if Chinese construction was so poor why aren’t there more articles than this one. I remember reading that article and absolutely feel sorry for the loss of life but it is amazing to me there are not more of these stories. If anything you hear more about manufacturing injuries than construction gone bad. Not only that, if you were in Africa today, you would see in most countries on that continent they are building their entire infrastructure. Why, they do it quick and well. They parlay that into receiving a nice share of Africa’s natural resources. In speaking with a chaplain friend of mine, he says that America’s good well gesture like AID’s support and other humanitarian support, can’t compete with what China is doing to help them grow out of their poverty by building their infrastructure.

  325. Ralph February 19, 2011 11:29 pm

  328. G (China) February 19, 2011 11:37 pm

    Ralph,

I agree the oversight on food is a real problem. But the government is cracking down hard on this issue. As for trade issues on products, there is always a cat and mouse game that goes on with this. China also claims that America’s products doesn’t pass compliance standards. The milk powder issue was the big one, and it had such a terrible effect on international trade for China that the whip came flying down.

  329. Ralph February 19, 2011 11:55 pm

I basically agree that China produces a lot of excellent products that U.S. consumers buy and use safely, thank you Homey.

I’ve seen a few warehouses near Waipio Costco and in Halawa Valley industrial area that uses exterior prefab material, looks like concrete, that stands two stories tall. And the erection of the exterior walls as a skeleton took longer than weeks to install.

Now the article Garret posted claims the Chinese are erecting a 15 story building in 6 days, including floors, steel infrastructure held by bolts and an exterior facade (shown on the video but I don’t know what it is made of) and it will withstand a 9.0 earthquake. A 9.0 earthquake is huge.

I had a good conversation once with a SEC supporter. He was telling me how HI came out of obscurity in football. He couldn’t believe they let June Jones go just when HI was on the map, but thought it was good that they were able to get Mack. He went on to say that HI does well in a lot of sports. A big smile came over my face talking about our Spring sports that Kazz mentioned. If HI can continue to make the turn in Basketball, you got to think HI should be considered a giant in college sports. Now if we can only do something about the golf team…

  337. G (China) February 20, 2011 12:27 am

    Ralph,

One other thing about construction, Chinese construction sites have workers working round the clock. I hated at 2 or 3am they were still super bright night lights on. The noise coming from those sites made for a lot of sleepless nights. Maybe that’s why they do it so fast as to avoid complaints from the public.

good job on really studying the entries as you have FIVE different shirt categories with

is needed for you to officially be in the contest. Got to come back one more time as you
did not pass the test and I can’t send you to the head of the class until you shirt size do !

All in all good folks TODAY will be the official drawing right aftr the NBA All Star game. No
more entries when the game starts. Off this morning for my regular work out and we will
get back later on. Very happy to do this for you as the shirts are really AWESOME to view

apparently, coach coolen, gave ricketts the ball to redeem herself against stanford after she was blasted for 10-hits and 10-runs in 2.2 innings against oregon in the first game of a double header with the two nationally ranked PAC 10 teams.
“She gets that scowl on her face, like ‘I want to pitch’,” Coolen observed.
Ricketts offered a vintage Lombardi-like-reminder, “Rough things happen and it’s just how you react to it.”

Redemption aside, coach coolen knows the temperament of his wahine players best.
Yesterday, he demonstrated his management skills.

And with all the fireworks Iawata was creating with her bat yesterday, it barely went noticed that Kelly Majam was able to return to form with a hit that scratched the top of the center field wall for a homerun. Majam is retooling herself at the plate until she can regain some of her strength weakened through radiation treatment. kelly is simply getting on base with close to an astounding .800 ob ave. her slugging ave was near 1000 entering the day, an amazing feat coupled with a watchful-eye– her BBs have increased to just below 2 per game. Majam has been on base more than any other wahine…kelly is simply an amazing athlete and softball player–and i just dont mean homeruns–she is developing into a Jen Yee, multi-skilled player.
Kudos to sarah for a breakout game, 3-hits including an rbi double….and speaking about replacements, sharla continues to contribute and coach coolen has pushed her up to the
#5 spot in the batting-order. Quite an assignment for a frosh on this team.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
