Let's get physical

The preliminaries are over. The Warriors put on the shells today, which means the team will start hitting today. Somehow this reminds me of one of head coach Greg McMackin’s pet phrases: “Ths isn’t P.E.”

Happy birthday to Liane Yim.

    11/14 Hawaii 55 NMS 13 (2nd worse team in Div 1-A loses 8th straight)

Higher altitude, thinner air equal longer punts. If we’re hearing gasps from the crowds, and cheers of oy,oy,oy at his booming punts here at sea level can you imagine what the reactions will be when he has a chance to punt up in the higher altitude.

    Question;

To someone in the know, if you were an aspiring football player which would be a better venue to train at–in the desert heat or in the higher altitudes and thinner air? IDK. Do teams, like Boise, who practices at a higher altitude and thinner air are they naturally inclined to be in better shape then their counterparts that practice at lower altitudes?

    COLT WATCH:

    http://blog.redskins.com/2009/08/08/saturday-august-8-fan-appreciation-day-is-here/#continued

“They’re all here for Fan Appreciation Day, which includes an intra-squad scrimmage, an address from Coach Jim Zorn, and appearances by the Redskins Marching Band and Redskins Cheerleaders. They’re all hoping to see some of their favorite players, get some autographs, and just enjoy the day.

And, in the case of Stephen and Spencer Walker, continue an ongoing debate that’s just as popular in their family as it is online. “I’d like to see Jason Campbell,” dad Stephen says, when I ask who they’re excited to see.

“Colt Brennan,” son Spencer says immediately afterward.

“He’s been a Colt fan since he got here,” Stephen says, in the tones of a father resigned to his son’s peculiar decisions.

“He’s needs to be a starter,” Spencer says.

Today, for the first time this year, we should get to see both of them in live action. Which probably still won’t settle the ongoing debate.”

Sorry to hear about Lewis Walker & John Fonoti’s mothers – where was the information originally posted or heard since I don’t recall reading anything here?

Yesterday’s practice was somewhat confusing to watch since I had to guess as to what the purpose was for most of the drills other than keeping physically active – except for the passing/catching. I did bring binocs this year so it was easier to see what was happening, but it would be helpful to have someone really knowledgeable about what was going on sitting nerby to explain to those of us who are trying to learn more about the intricacies of the game.

    Have a good day everyone.

It looks as if DrDoc will beat the junk weather left over from Felicia on his trip back home.

  27. Maynard G/ Kribbs August 8, 2009 10:16 am

Left practice early (so did A-House) but the QBs were mostly throwing strikes. Hard to tell about all of them, having left Myki (and Al’s) list at home.

GA was more deliberate than the others – probably going down his progressions. If the OL holds up, that should be OK.

Some of the usual suspects were there.

  28. Slugger August 8, 2009 10:42 am

    royal crown,

Training at high altitude gives athletes more stamina due to the increase in red blood cells to carry more oxygen. IDK if short training programs help at altitude. When NAU had its High Altitude Training Center open, we would see runners from all over the world running all around Flagstaff (at 7,000 ft. elevation). The Japanese & Italian swim teams are regulars in the NAU Olympic-sized pool.

I don’t like the desert. Too hot & inhospitable.

W-Doc, info re: Fonoti’s & Walker’s Moms in the article by ST.

    MsLiz,

When are you coming in for Heather Mack’s clinic?

    Nalani:

Kahai, IOHO, did well blocking all the defensive linemen including Rocky who pushed everybody around.

Kahai may not be tall, but he has great balance and strength to counter all the D-tackles.

Now, I can see why UH recruited him even if he is not over 6′ tall.

“Also, Colt Brennan came in as the “starter” for the second team offense, then was replaced by Chase Daniels.

JC was obviously the starter on the “not exactly first string offense” and was replaced by TC.

The “first team offense” actually went right down the field and scored a figgie. Campbell was 8 for 9 on the drive. The drive stalled inside the 5, Mason was stuffed on a run, resulting in a 3rd and 9, and JC completed a pass to Betts, who couldn’t quite get in.

On the second “first team” drive, JC did throw the only INT of the day. He was going deep out on the far sideline to ARE, and I don’t know exactly what happened, but I know ARE was on the ground, and the ball was in the defenders hands. It was a perfectly thrown ball though, lot of zip, tight spiral…

Colt had 2-3 excellent throws. Actually, I thought that we were going to be in for a treat as his first pass was an absolute beauty. Throw to the far side, for 10+ yards on some type of a slant/in (route wasn’t very good), hit the WR in stride. I was like, “wow, this could be good.” Sadly, that was the CB highlight of the day. The defense stopped them cold after that, forced a 3rd and long, which was a pass that was incomplete or short of the first down (I don’t remember), and would have forced a punt. (they didn’t bother with the punting in the scrimmage, they just reset the ball at the starting yard marker and got on with it.)

They started again, and somehow ended up in 3rd and ~20, after a “sack” and then a false start. CB was holding onto the ball much longer than he should have on a couple of occasions. Looking down field when he needed to get the damn thing out, even if it was into the crowd. You can’t stand back there looking for the deep ball in the NFL. If it’s not there almost immediately, you gotta get rid of it somewhere else.

He did have one drop in there, #19 had a rocket hit him in the hands, but it was a bit out in front of him and he couldn’t hall it in.

On what I think was his 3rd opportunity, he checked off near side on a 3rd down play and completed a ball, but it was high. Looked like the ball got away from CB a little. Smoot CRUSHED the WR. I didn’t see who it was.

And then the wheels really started to come off. Longer in the pocket, and then CB had the ball batted out of his hands for a fumble. Eeek.

The “excuse” for Colt would be that he was going up against the starting Defense with the second string offense. So his job was clearly cut out for him. (Haynsworth and Rogers, for what it’s worth, didn’t play, and the “vets” really only got a few snaps, so it really wasn’t the full 1st team defense either.)

But. Chase Daniels came in to replace CB and pretty much immediately went deep for Marko Mitchel. Mitchel had beaten his man (Tryon) and was behind the defense. CD under threw him by about 4 yards, allowing Tryon to get back in the play, but all he could do was knock Mitchell down for a Pass Interference call. He doesn’t interfere, the ball is caught. If CD gets that one out a bit farther, it’s a BEAUTY of a TD pass. But he didn’t.”

Nice to be back at the practice fields again!

The boys had a good day and the defense is starting to make noise. Too bad didn’t see Dunnachie doing his thing today… 🙁

    From KokoMike on ES:

    COLT WATCH:

Here is what the Redskins report about Colt Brennan from the scrimmage play-by-play:

It’s Colt Brennan’s turn under center. Ball placed at 35-yard line.

Brennan throws a slant pass to Marko Mitchell, who catches the ball and cuts across the field. DeAngelo Hall shoves him down to the ground.
Rock Cartwright runs up the middle for short yardage. Off to the left, Mitchell gets in a shoving match with Fred Smoot and a referee has to break it up.
Cartwright runs to the right, but picks up minimal yardage again.
Third down, there is a false start by Devin Clark that pushes the ball back five yards.
Third down again, Brennan drops back to pass and he is quickly pressured by Brian Orakpo. He throws across the middle of the field, but no one is open. The series comes to an end.
The ball is brought back to the 35-yard line and a new series for Colt Brennan begins.

Brennan fires a short pass to Marko Mitchell, Kareem Moore is there to trip him up.
Brennan throws another quick pass, this time to Trent Shelton, but the ball slips away from Shelton’s grasp.
Third down, Brennan throws a sideline pass to Mitchell for a first down. Kevin Barnes comes up and levels a hard tackle on him.
Dominique Dorsey takes the handoff and after a short gain he is tackled by Anthony Montgomery and Rob Jackson.
Brennan drops back, but Lorenzo Alexander speeds around the end and bats the ball from his hand. Fumble. Play called dead.
Brennan throws a quick pass downfield to Robbie Agnone, but he is stopped short of the first down. Series comes to an end.

Here is the report of every play:

Just got home from 3rd practice. It was pretty good, there where a few hits on the 11 on 11, GA is looking a lot better than last year. But it’s only 3 days in so I expect a little confusion on the players part, but by mid week they should be ready to rock and roll. Good to see BG, Kazz, Curveball and of course A-House. He walked down to check out the o-line so I guess we will hear his report on them soon.

    27 days….

  42. A-House August 8, 2009 1:49 pm

The O-line unit was mostly walking through different plays at first so it was difficult to say how good they were.

Then, they went through some running plays off either side with the opposite guards pulling and they seemed to have picked up the tempo a little. Coach Shaw is a technician pointing out every mistake by each player and making sure they understood his points. No messing around who’s the boss. Quiet, but effective!

Cannot say the same for the “young” line backers/D-line coach who had something to say to each player, but it seemed that the players did not respect/listen to what he had to say. They did not turn to look at Coach and listen to his remarks. Most of them just walked away. This is sad because it will show when the real game begins. Only they can take the blame for what happens as most failed to make corrections in practice. Collectively, I would have told them “if you’re so f—–ing good, how come you make the same mistakes all the time during position drills!!!!” I know the feeling as a brand new 2LT walking into a “seasoned” tank platoon with everyone looking at you to see how I would handle myself. You have to use the platoon Sgt at the start and slowly work your way up until the entire platoon respects you for all that you do and, at times, what I did not do.

I hope that Coach Shaw is working with Coach Smith (before, during and after practices) on becoming a better O-line coach. One thing caught my attention was every time Shaw called out to Smith, it was always Coach Smith; never Brian.

Side note: it was good to see Coach Kajiyama on the makai sidelines watching and typing on his keyboard as players went through their position drills; especially, the defensive backs!

No questions that Rocky is the molding force for the d-line and line backers. A coach was trying to get their attention, but most just seemed to lloy gag until Rocky raised his vocie and told the group to gather and listen to what coach had to say.

  43. BG August 8, 2009 2:12 pm

First time at practice and was like being in the proverbial candy shop with a $100 bill. Totally fascinated by the coaches and their different personalities. Coach Miano was nearby and readily viewable. Doesn’t miss anything and is able to demonstrate what he’s talking about. Hi energy. Always teaching. Gives out a lot of good strokes.

  44. Pomai August 8, 2009 2:13 pm

A-House your right about Rocky he seem to be taking the leadership role and the guy is a stud, was watching him the other day running a drill with the tackling dummies an he was overwhelming, great balance an fast I mean very fast.

  45. BG August 8, 2009 2:44 pm

Didn’t recognize Coach Tormey at first…expected an older guy. But, he’s another fit looking guy with a high energy engine. His drills for the special teams were impressive in their detailed techniques. Truly impressive. Warriors will block some kicks this year.

In one drill, he held a tennis ball in each out-stretched hand and dropped them on command. The players had to fire out under a framework that forced them to stay low and get the ball with one hand before it could bounce a second time. Teaching quick starts and getting to the ball.

Only nit-picky thing I didn’t like was the way some of the players were told to “cock their arms” by holding them straight back while their other hand was on the ground “behind the ball and their head behind their hand”. Doing it that way brings more force into their first arm swing but slows the first step slightly. Sorry, regressing into coaching sprinters again.

  46. Garret August 8, 2009 2:46 pm

Thank you very much for all of the practice reports! The only thing that bothered me was this mention…kind of reminds me of what happened with certain OL and the OL coach last year. With Rocky being the leader of the DL, I wish that he’d be able to convince the other members of the DL to pay attention to the coach all the time instead of when he yells at them to listen to the coach.

Cannot say the same for the “young” line backers/D-line coach who had something to say to each player, but it seemed that the players did not respect/listen to what he had to say. They did not turn to look at Coach and listen to his remarks. Most of them just walked away.

Offense and defense “big boys” did one on one pass rushing drills right in front of us. Apologies in advance because no had a roster…would be nice to give kudos to some of the lesser known players. In the contests, the defense seemed to come out slightly ahead, but it was close. Meatoga did consistently well as did Rocky and Fonoti. Most everyone else on both sides won some and lost some. For the offense, no one got past Estes while I was watching. Last contest was Rocky vs Estes and it was awesome! But, Estes stalemated Rocky for a plus.

  49. BG August 8, 2009 3:16 pm

    Nalani

Kahai had Rocky for his first bout and was clubbed off balance and out of the way. Settled down and did much better on his next one and thereafter. Wow! Offense and defense really went hard!

  50. BG August 8, 2009 3:27 pm

As we were leaving, Kazz mentioned that he thought that the lady that had come sit with us with a young little boy and baby girl was Mrs Rolovich. So I went over and asked. With a smile, she verified that Kazz was right on. I thanked her for coming back to Hawaii and asked how Nick’s mom (Lori) was doing, and she told me, “She’s doing great!”. She also said her name was Anna. I thanked her again and walked back to Kazz.

    Great Afternoon All!

It’s great that football is back! Wasn’t able to make it to practice today but was watching some action elsewhere. It’s gettin’ good!

    Happy Birthday Liane!

  52. Kazz August 8, 2009 4:49 pm

Whoever witnessed today’s “one on one” drills between the dline and the oline better start calling this person: “The REAL F’N DEAL”… as in Vaughn “THE REAL F’N DEAL” Meatoga.

Meatoga, a sophomore, huddled his fellow dlinemen together before this drill against the oline proclaiming “this is our drill, our world!!!”. You could see the potential leadership qualities this young man has… not to mention his leadership by DEVESTATING example.

Meatoga’s 1st “victim” was none other than John Estes. One quick swift club/swipe move and Meatoga made his sudden stride into the back field. I cannot say enough about his motor.

Bryant Moniz is still throwing some of the prettiest balls out there.

Greg Alexander’s release has gotten quicker and all QBs no longer possess visible hesitation.

To me no receivers “stood out” more than usual.

Alex Green showed that his hype is well deserved after feeding off of a play action/screen pass play that the defense bit into. Green took off towards the endzone with almost no one in sight.

Blaze Soares showed some speed and good sense of where the ball was going to be after he dropped back into zone coverage during the 11 on 11s but then unleashed onto the HB (which I couldn’t identify)… as ST mentioned, they got physical today.

As mentioned before Kahai Choy stood his own ground against, of all dlinemen, Vaughn Meatoga. Choy stood square against Meatoga in aforementioned drills above, causing the coaches to blow the play dead before Meatoga could get into the backfield. In all honesty, it was the most undeniable clear cut one on one “victory” any of the offensive linemen had against a member of the dline during that particular drill.

Alex Dunnachie, where were your punts today sir? 🙁 I was a little disappointed, probably not as much as Pomai, that we didn’t get to see any of Dunnachie’s punts. However he was spending some time practicing place holding with Lucas Ingram. With both as freshmen, they’ll become key components to our Special Teams in the future.

Today was my first time watching Corey Nielsen and it looked like he had not so smooth of a Saturday practice. Nielsen wears #6… Yo Coach Miano, let’s get him another QB # please!!! Some of his spirals lacked “tightness” and over shot some of his receivers during route drills. Cayman Shutter was seen “picking the brain” of Greg Alexander a few times. David Graves looked comfortable out there today. Most of the reps during the 11 on 11s featured only Alexander, Rausch, and S. Austin. Rausch and Austin look to be in a battle for the #2 job.

Royce Pollard is going to benefit from Malcolm Lane not currently being at Fall Camp.

“Sudden change” was in effect today and it showed it had it’s effects on some offensive linemen as their starting posture afterwards looked like it was reverting back to the “bad positioning”, as defined by Coach Shaw. No doubt it was a result of the sprints of “sudden change”, but these are the guys competing or looking to remain starters and their stamina will have to improve as camp moves along.

    Last thought:

I was so great, as a fan, to see Vaughn Meatoga showing that vocal leadership I mentioned earlier in this post. However, it soon led me to start wondering and asking myself: “who else is doing the same?”. In retrospect, John Estes should have rallied his boys on the oline in the same way Meatoga did during the same drill against each other, now, maybe he did and I didn’t see it, but Meatoga stood out to me A LOT today.

In closing, seeing it for myself today, I think Coach Mack is right in saying we will surprise a lot of people this season. Granted, despite some questionable things I saw, I still believe the offensive line will be much better than last season, but the defense today, proved me wrong in the sense that it will take them a few games to gel… They’ll probably “gel” a whole lot quicker than many of us think.

    I forgot…

The end of practice featured placekicking drills from the middle of the field and then zig-zagging to both hashmarks. Honestly, it didn’t look pretty.

Brain Blumberg and Scott Enos went back and forth taking kicks with Funaki placeholding and quite a few balls were wide of the goal posts. Both just arrived to UH recently and this is their first camp, so I doubt today’s struggles will continue much longer… I’m sure Coach Tormey will make damn sure of that.

You have to use the platoon Sgt at the start and slowly work your way up until the entire platoon respects you for all that you do and, at times, what I did not do.
    .
    .
    .
No questions that Rocky is the molding force for the d-line and line backers. A coach was trying to get their attention, but most just seemed to lloy gag until Rocky raised his vocie and told the group to gather and listen to what coach had to say.

Wow… WTF?!!?!??!?! Guess I missed that. Good to hear Rocky taking action and no bulls**t from anyone. I guess that kind of stuff is expected from a young group of linemen, but that cannot continue as camp moves on.

There is ONLY TWO weeks left of camp….

Almost home. Unscheduled overnighter in LA. grrr. Left an hour late from London because of an *unmatched* piece of luggage (ie owner wasn’t on board). #69 Ralph,

I don’t agree on this one…… a coach is a coach is a coach…..no matter who it is, all, no i mean ALL coaches deserve respect from the players. if you can’t respect the person, respect the position…..very simple….player and coach, student and teacher, rookie and officer, editor and writer, hahaha

  79. Garret August 8, 2009 8:03 pm

I agree with Bulla…the report of players ignoring instruction from a coach was really disturbing for me.

  80. Garret August 8, 2009 8:08 pm

I really respect how the Miami coaches have handled their WR battle this camp. They started with Camarillo at starting WR and Bess at #3 WR (Ginn is #1 and has the other starting WR spot locked up), which made sense because Camarillo was the starter before he got hurt last season. So, he didn’t lose his spot due to injury and he was given quite a bit of time as the starter.

The other thing I respect is that according to media reports from the past few days, Bess has been doing slightly better than Camarillo in training camp. So, instead of just keeping Camarillo as the starter, they have moved Bess to the starting WR spot and they are rotating Camarillo in to give him significant reps.

Bess will be either the starting WR or starting slot receiver this season for Miami. Last season he got more than 2x the catches when he was the starting WR as compared to when he was the starting slot receiver, so winning the starting WR spot is really important…especially since Bess’ contract is up at the end of this season and the number of catches will translate directly to $$$.

Davone Bess opened at starting WR opposite Ted Ginn Jr. and seems to be ahead of Greg Camarillo.

Gotta say that Coach Tormey is unleashing his “bag of tricks” for the special teams… The new punt blocking drills employed this morning is just an inkling of things to come over the course of fall camp.

Next thing to try to catch is the kick/punt return drills.

  90. FloridaTed August 8, 2009 8:22 pm

Outstanding, all the great reporting from camp, for us poor little Tsaikos, who can’t be there. Every report, from the Tsai-Meister on down, even the slightest, little tidbit, is very much appreciated.

Even though we, apparently, have various viewpoints about certain things, the overall consensus seems to be unanimous, much improvement everywhere over last year, especially the offense, but even the defense seems to look very impressive and ready to put the proper surprises on our opponents.

Man, I can’t wait to get going.

  91. Ralph August 8, 2009 8:27 pm

didn’t we average two (2) yards per punt return last season. Dismal display of special teams, i wonder if it was the scheme or the players used to form the wedge and block down field. Maybe it’s better to use talent rather than whoever isn’t starting on offense or defense and the only PT they get is on special teams. I know there are teams with special teams players, but the better ones stay focused all four quarters, whereas others try to get their head into the game when its time to run onto the field and the intensity and focus isn’t there. We’ve given up some long runs on kick offs.

Question: How busch-league can K-5 be?

Answer: They’re so busch-league, that they can’t even keep with an entire game until the finish.

They just went to regular programing an inning before the Wahine softball game against Boise State actually ended thus skipping the end of the game and the senior day ceremony.

For me, I already knew what happened and so forth, but seriously they couldn’t even finish the game.

At times K-5 seems more of a dis-service to UH athletics, in terms of coverage… 🙄

The only times I remember when we had good special teams was with McBriar, Elam and 2007. The majority of the time, in my memory, was SpT being a liability. If we could significantly improve there, winning becomes 20% easier.

Anyway, this is the year it counts for Big Mack, the transition is over, plenty of talent and even experience, is available, just look what Boise did last year with a relatively young team on offense. We have lots of talent, now we’ll really get to know our Coaching staff.

  104. Garret August 8, 2009 9:59 pm

    FloridaTed,

You do have a good point about the punt return and kick return defense, that really cost UH in some games. Special teams cost at least one BSU game and several other games. However, we fans tend to remember all the bad plays and not the plays where the punt and kick returners were stopped right away. Here are some stats that seem to indicate that things weren’t *always* bad and things weren’t just good in 2007 and with McBriar and Elam.

    2006:
UH punt return average: 8.03 yards per return
UH opponent punt return average: 7.75 yards per return

    2004:
UH punt return average: 14.0 yards per return
UH opponent punt return average: 10.48 yards per return.

Kickoff returns are harder to compare because onside kick recoveries really hurt the kickoff return average. But here are some numbers:

    2008:
UH: 20.45 yards per return (which counts 8 returns that weren’t by the kick returners–Cameron Allen-Jones for -2 yards, Mana Lolotai for 0 yards, etc.)
    Opp: 24.39 yards per return

    2007:
    UH: 24.3
    Opp: 23.9

    2006:
    UH: 19.76
    Opp: 21.8

    2005:
UH: 18.81 (including 2 returns each by Paepule and Tautofi for 0 yards)
    Opp: 19.39

I’m thinking of a way to attend BOTH the Washington State and UNLV games, but I’m not sure if I can get the scheduling to work out for me.

I’m gonna be relocating to Washington D.C. next month for my new job, but with having to conduct a residence search in DC/Northern VA/Maryland AND getting all my stuff moved cross-country, combined with trying to squeeze in both football matches, who knows if this’ll work.

I’ll have to think this out carefully, but where there’s a will, there’s a way.

CRW congratulations, you got a job, i guess the government found out you are an honorable warrior fan.

Went to Uncle’s for dinner this evening w/ my hula sistah & her hubby. Stayed a while to listen to Dennis Kamakahi play music w/ his son. We got to talk UH football w/ him on our way. Keala Watson is his nephew.

    Night!

  115. Slugger August 8, 2009 11:40 pm

“…on our way out.” It was far out (!) to get to talk story w/ Rev. Dennis Kamakahi!

    las vegas,

Thanks for all of the work you’ve put into the UNLV game. Did you get stuck with a non-refundable deposit for Hooters?

    Moe moe time…

  116. Pomai August 9, 2009 1:11 am

Maynard G. Krebbs I saw you walking up the hill didn’t know it was you or would have said “Howzit”. Am going to try an make most of the practice’s this year, so I am sure we will see each other again.

I didn’t notice the problem with some of the guys not paying attention to the coach, but that needs to be corrected ASAP. One thing I did notice, that during most of the conditioning drills that a lot of guys wouldn’t finish, if they where running from point A to point B they would pull up a few yards shy of the finish and walk casually to the finish. Now to me that shows laziness, if I was the coach those guys would be running laps for every time they did it, you need to finish strong.

But on the positive side when the D line was running the drills right in front of us most of them finished strong and to the end, I think we are going to be alright on the D line.

  117. Ralph August 9, 2009 1:38 am

Pomai, i haven’t gone to practice this season but I did catch a few practices last season and the sudden change wind sprints showed a few players not finishing strong. I’m sure the coaches are aware but they don’t seem to care. One of the reason we struggled last year and lost to Boise again, and Cincy in the 4th quarter, we don’t finish. Mac was happy with being 7-7, went to a bowl, met his goal in playing in the Hawaii bowl. I’m sure his goal again is to win at least 7 games and go to the Hawaii bowl again. But that means we lose at least 6 games. How sad.

Committed Road Warrior – One of my professional colleagues who lives 17 blocks from the US Capitol who might be able to help you out with a temporary place to stay while you’re looking for permanent housing. Let me know. He’s a lawyerslashlobbyist – gee, what an unusual job in DC.

Will you actually be working in the City or in the greater metro area?

Will be buying the latest version of Football for Dummies as soon as possible, but dakachingching is kinda tight right now for anything not absolutely necessary like dog food and coffee beans. The damage to our 1988 Toyota caused by the expletive-deleted jerkbreath when he jimmied open the driver’s side door while the car was parked in the Costco parking lot is going to set us back at least $100.

Too tired to work any longer so it’s orfff to beddybye. DrDoc is should be home in about 14 hours.

  120. 99club August 9, 2009 3:47 am

    c_c,

Thanks for the vids! Looks like the updates are going to be shorter until we get closer to the start of the season.

    CRW-
If you will be working for the gov’t they’ll pay you over $120 a month in the greater DC area to offset metro/bus costs. So you can broaden your apt search area if you find places near the metro in either N. VA or MD. Personally, I’d choose somewhere in Bethesda.

Can ‘t blame ML for redshirting. Its his right and may be the smart thing to make sure he gets his education. Hope he can coach his teammates though.

Important lesson: The Warriors HAVE to hit the books just as much as they hit the weights in the training rooms and pads & players on the field! It helps not only the player, but also the entire TEAM!!! 😐

Nice quick summary by Kalani Takase. 😀

  128. Garret August 9, 2009 4:58 am

    CRW,

Congratulations on getting your job! I really think that the Metro system is great, so if you can take that to work you will save a lot of time and money compared to driving and parking.

  129. Garret August 9, 2009 5:01 am

So now we know that the “personal problems” for Lane were Academic. It is best for UH that he gets the Academic side in order with his redshirt, because if he completes his eligibility in bad Academic shape, UH would take a hit on the APR. It is also best for him because he needs to get his degree.

  130. Garret August 9, 2009 5:02 am

I hope that Ginlack isn’t having the same problem as Lane…

  131. βρεω808 August 9, 2009 5:10 am

    Hi Garret!

Here is an example of bigger programs having an advantage over UH. The program sure could use more academic advisers (and “clearing-house” people) to help the student-athlete. But in the end, it’s still the student-athlete’s responsibility to take care of the classroom business. 😐

  132. Garret August 9, 2009 5:12 am

Adding Aaron Bain as a student manager should help with the WR position coaching. Student managers cannot do as much as GAs, but everything helps.

  133. βρεω808 August 9, 2009 5:14 am

Okay Tsaikos – There’s some of us that have to work. This 24/7 stuff gets pretty f…n (borrowing a Kazz term….) pain in the ‘okole – especially Football Season! Hope the rest of you have a kick-back awesome Sunday!!!

  134. Garret August 9, 2009 5:19 am

    brew808,

I agree with your post #132. UH’s academic advisors do what they can, but in the end the students have to be responsible for themselves. It does help to have more academic advisors and tutors, but UH doesn’t have the money that big-budget programs have. It shouldn’t be a surprise that creating a big academic facility and hiring a lot of advisors and tutors improved the GPAs of athletes at other schools…that is how the BCS programs responded to the APR requirements, and I cannot criticize them for helping their athletes (all men and women benefit, not just football players) do better in the classroom.

Didn’t UH has a computer lab donated that was closed the entire time under HF? That type of thing really doesn’t help the students and is such a waste of resources.

  135. Garret August 9, 2009 5:20 am

    brew808,

Hopefully your work goes well today. I had to work until late tonight–but unlike you, I have internet access and can take blog breaks when I’m at work.

  136. Garret August 9, 2009 5:34 am

For #135, “has” should have been “have”
