LB commits to UH

The Warriors are close to completing the 2013 recruiting class after receiving a commitment from Darzil Washington, a linebacker from Eastern Arizona College.

Washington, who is 6 feet 3 and 230 pounds, initially signed with Texas A&M in 2011. He did not meet the requirements to play for the Aggies. He will have three years to play three UH seasons.

Here’s a video of Washington from an Ultimate 100 camp: Washington video.

The Warriors are likely to fill two scholarship spots today — one to a player from the mainland, one from Hawaii.

David Moala is signing with UH tomorrow.

Not sure why people are saying otherwise.

  6. Shoko February 5, 2013 7:09 am

Not sure if this is old news considering how up-to-date this blog has been on recruiting, but I just heard (read) Matthew Lyons committed to Nevada.

UH dropped Tuaau. But the official word is it is a mutual decision.

    Nice! Tomorrow gang…let’s do this!

Washington is a nice sized linebacker and that’s awesome to have Moala sign. Too bad about Tua’au but I think Yap and Woodard are capable pass rushers, plus Tepa is a beast. Interior needs some beefing up and I’m glad we got Moala, Tulimaseali’i, and Keti.

Goog Morning & Welcome to the Warriors Darzil Washington!

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

AL – I owe you one!

Time goes slow … will Wednesday ever come?

  15. Bugaz February 5, 2013 7:36 am

I hear that a PAC team is making a push for KT. I hope he stays committed, but it’s looking like WK all over again in Waianae.

  16. papajoe2 February 5, 2013 7:39 am

    top 20?

    Good mornin!

  17. gobows February 5, 2013 7:40 am

    Darzil Washington’s TAMU bio:

HIGH SCHOOL: Coached by Robert Valdez at West St. John High School in Louisiana … earned first-team all-district honors after making 123 total tackles, including 14 QB SACKS AND 30 TACKLES FOR LOSS … also forced five fumbles, grabbed three interceptions and had two INT returns for TDs … his head coach said Washington would have been district and parish MVP but he was edged out by his teammate … Washington played just one season for Valdez at West St. John after transferring from Hahnville High School.

  18. jeezy33 February 5, 2013 7:41 am

    15. Are you being serious?

  19. Bugaz February 5, 2013 7:48 am

Definitely! I wouldn’t joke about this.

No way!!! Are you for real???

  23. jeezy33 February 5, 2013 7:57 am

    19. Are you saying we lost him or theres a chance of losing him?

  24. WAR MACHINE February 5, 2013 7:58 am

Well, Tuaau did only have 2 years to play 2 right? I guess we wouldn’t want to waste a scholarship on a 2 year to get him upto speed for 1 year to play…still would’ve been nice though. DL looking strong. Let’s just hope we get the FLORIDA boys!!!

  25. MattyBoy February 5, 2013 7:58 am

    ST,

    Is that true about KT?

  26. Sean February 5, 2013 7:58 am

Did anyone hear Doris Sullivan on BC show?

Congratulations PIAA having 55 student athletes signing itomirrow morning!! 18 young women and 37 young men making commitments tiward their futures!

  27. dannyp February 5, 2013 7:59 am

    21

Are you saying WK is a Duck ( a well known fact) or that KT is a Duck?

  28. Sean February 5, 2013 7:59 am

    WK is a duck now

  29. al February 5, 2013 8:01 am

st, probably because you hadn’t listed moala on this morning’s list of commits.

  30. Sean February 5, 2013 8:01 am

Sorry I don’t have the ability to hear lil birdies chirp.

  31. Bowwar February 5, 2013 8:02 am

Seems like there is a bit of “fluidity” in the commitments…I’m really wondering whether some of our desired recruits will opt for late Pac12 overtures.

All I got to say is our D line class is super thin regardless. Might be time to just offer Tufaga out of Kahuku. We was dominant this year.

  34. al February 5, 2013 8:09 am

    i like tufaga, too.

  35. d1shima February 5, 2013 8:11 am

    Go BasketBows!

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Less than 24 hours until the fax machine at the football offices starts chirping with the LOIs. Can’t wait!

    Go Warriors!

    Go Wahine!

  37. WAR MACHINE February 5, 2013 8:15 am

Can we get back the names on our jerseys?!

  38. JJones ghost February 5, 2013 8:28 am

Names on Jerseys would be nice. Its for the FANS, and not Chow’s old school beliefs

  39. duffer February 5, 2013 8:32 am

Wonder why UH doesn’t use a pdf file instead of a fax machine?

  41. jeezy33 February 5, 2013 8:37 am

Is Benny Fonua going on a mission? Curious because we signed 3 JC Lbs. Also Drake Miller

  42. jeffdman2000 February 5, 2013 8:39 am

we gonna run a 3-4 with all our linebackers.

  43. haka February 5, 2013 8:40 am

    Go Warriors!

I would like to see the names on the jersey’s back too. Besides helping the fans and announcers with identification, it’s a very prideful thing for a very prideful state and culture to have your name shown on nationally televised games for ALL to see!

  44. PurpleMaple February 5, 2013 8:44 am

ST, FYI, Rivals recruiting update has David Moala listed as committing to Arizona St. I am glad they are incorrect. And excited to hear of the two additional commitments we will learn of tomorrow or sooner. Too bad about Tua’au, but I am sure there is good reason.

  45. DoubleB February 5, 2013 8:48 am

I really hope the commits we have secured up until now remain committed. I especially enjoy watching Hawai’i own succeed as Warriors. Although Hawai’i has become the permanent home of some of the Warriors from across the pacific such as THE Greatest Ever option QB Michael Carter. He would pitch the ball and take hellacious shots and keep on ticking.

  46. SteveM February 5, 2013 8:53 am

    Good morning everyone!

Que up “24”… modify plot for recruits until N.L.I. moment.

Wait for next season to start! 🙂

  47. sport games February 5, 2013 8:55 am

Thanks , I have just been looking for information approximately this topic for a long time and yours is the best I’ve came upon till now. But, what about the bottom line? Are you positive about the source?|What i don’t realize is if truth be told how you’re no longer actually a lot more well-preferred than you may be now. You are very intelligent.

  48. helencalif February 5, 2013 8:58 am

Talked to my niece this morning. She lives near Portland and watched a sports show last night. Commentators were talking about 2 recruits from Texas that had committed to the U of O.

They ran their interview with the Texas recruits. “Why did you choose U of O?”

“For the shoes, for those great uniforms.”The fact that the fan base is strong and the stands are full also was a factor.

Remember, a lot of recruits are coming right out of high school. Shoes, uniforms, and playing for screaming fans are important.

  49. Dan-O February 5, 2013 8:59 am

Realistically, NO ONE can be absolutely positive about anyone signing with a particular school.

Hence, we all wait till tomorrow…..for the letters to come in. We should all pray for no power outages at the UH campus, particularly the football offices and fax line.

For our local boys staying home….make sure they have the UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII letter signed!

  50. gobows February 5, 2013 9:00 am

pdf is better than fax… probably its a lack of resources at both ends…maybe in the near future they will be putting signatures on an iPad instead of paper.

  51. haka February 5, 2013 9:05 am

Interesting that this year’s class is void of anyone from the ILH.

  53. Warrior Dave February 5, 2013 9:06 am

Since this is a dark period with zero contact with all potential recruits, what does it mean when someone says… this school will continue to make strong push for (insert name here)

How can any school contact a player legally between now and Wednesday morning????

  54. kev-1 February 5, 2013 9:18 am

When it comes to Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) – the second pillar of the EU, cooperation between Member States has intergovernmental character, which means that EU and its institutions have few competences in CFSP and Members State conduct their foreign policy independently from the Council, the Commission and other Member States.

Nevertheless think about if you added some great pictures or videos to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with images and video clips, this site could undeniably be one of the best in its niche. Fantastic blog!

  66. Leahi2 February 5, 2013 10:01 am

I fully agree with #43. Put back the names of the players on the backs of the Jerseys. But I also add that we should do away with the Haka. We may be Hawaii but that doesn’t mean we gotta be pagan. Remember Queen Liliuokalani and bring back the Rainbows, its a God given sign. Nobody likes to take away the “H” Logo. Yes keep that on the Helmets. By the way Who said that the Rainbow is strictly for the LBGT? How unintelligent can that be?

  67. HawaiiMongoose February 5, 2013 10:05 am

Happy to hear David Moala is still committed. With him and KT plus the returnees we should have decent depth on the d-line.

  68. Haleakala February 5, 2013 10:08 am

This is something to crow about. According to the ESPN recruiting website, the MWC has only three commits of the top recruits in the ESPN 300. Hawaii has two of ESPN’s top commits, Aaron Zwahlen, and Kennedy Tulimasealii.

  70. Old School Dave February 5, 2013 10:53 am

Eh, make sure the fax machine stay plugged in tomorrow.

Yeah, Roosevelt has a very nice track and field. Their field used to be like packed, hardened clay, like many OIA school fields. Back in the 70s there was a proposal to build a stadium at Kaimuki HS, but that fell through as they built one at Kaiser, instead.

  71. kapakahi February 5, 2013 11:17 am

    #33,

Tufaga would have to add at least 20+ more lbs to play DT.

  72. kapakahi February 5, 2013 11:26 am

With no Tua’au, more so don’t understand why UH coaches decided to passed on Melifornwu this past weekend. Makes losing out on Titus even bigger now.

With Paipai done, Pu’u-Robinson moving to TE and Malepeai moving inside to DT, DE corp kinda starting to look a little thin with just Yap & Woodard the only returnees with any playing time. Tepa gonna have to step up.

  73. kapakahi February 5, 2013 11:38 am

Hopefully Darzil qualifies to transfer for the Fall…..unlike the last JC signee from Eastern Arizona College (Quenton Brown).

  74. kapakahi February 5, 2013 11:40 am

Daley was so hyped up coming to UH. wonder what kept him from getting PT. I only saw him on special teams. don’t see how TJ was better than Daley, and seems benny wasn’t quite ready. GDL not ready either. if it was a lack of speed, then moving Daley to the line makes sense.

  85. BigWave96744 February 5, 2013 12:01 pm

    Tepa sat out last year.

It their symbol right now more than anyone else’s. (unless you’re a fan of “My Little Pony” or something.)

It’s like how the word “g*y” means only one thing today as well, yes? (I mean . . . when have you heard it used seriously for anything but [oh! These puns!] nowadays, you know?)

That all having been said . . . the UH “H” logo is simply THE best logo in college sports nowadays. Pau.

  94. leron February 5, 2013 12:52 pm

#84 Daley had a good game at CSU, including one of the best (or maybe lucky) INTs of the year.

  95. kapakahi February 5, 2013 12:55 pm

Will be interesting to see which local player is now a possible late commit.

    Unless a surprise last-minute switch-up, a possible late offer? OR a re-offer? OR a JC local player?

    Hmmmm……

  96. kapakahi February 5, 2013 12:56 pm

wednesday will be dedicated to fax machine gazing.

Experts ‘evaluating’ tsunami threat to Hawaiian Islands following magnitude 8.0 earthquake from the Santa Cruz Islands near Papua New Guinea.

  116. Kevin February 5, 2013 3:04 pm

South Pacific Islands under Tsunami Warning at this time. Currently, Hawaii not included, but not in the clear yet. More “evaluation” of data is to be done.

  117. Haleakala February 5, 2013 3:04 pm

    Hopefully no tsunami.

  118. Kevin February 5, 2013 3:06 pm

One of the dumbest things I ever heard someone say from the last tsunami warning issued near Halloween 2012, was “its only a warning”.

A warning is the highest threat level for any natural disaster.

If some people are going to try to sound smart at least know what is common knowledge.

  119. Bryan Ketterer February 5, 2013 3:14 pm

I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own weblog and was wondering what all is required to get set up? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny? I’m not very web savvy so I’m not 100% sure. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

  120. Haleakala February 5, 2013 3:15 pm

Kevin: Thanks for keeping us posted. I have a house and neighbors which would be impacted should a tsunami arrive. I’ll check the civil defense website also.

  121. Bugaz February 5, 2013 3:16 pm

The only tsunami I want to hit Hawaii in the near future is a wave LOI’s of talented Warrior recruits

    Haleakala,

Always good to pay attention. There are too many un-educated and stubborn fools that chose not to and keep tempting fate. Next thing you know, they are on the news yelling and screaming about how “they had no idea”.

    Kevin:

You’re right. It’s unbelievable that some people go down to the beach when they here of a tsunami warning. Some even bring their kids. When I hear about that happening, I think of Darwin’s rule – the survival of the fittest (and not the dumbest).

  126. Bryson February 5, 2013 3:31 pm

I can’t wait to see who signs on that dotted line to become a Warrior tommorrow…No doubt I feel that the coaching staff has a few surprises in store like a maybe once committed local recruit staying home or a mainland recruit who wants to represent the Warriors and be apart of something special….

  127. Kevin February 5, 2013 3:35 pm

My favorite piece of human stupidity was years and years ago when a caller called into Perry and Price during a tsunami warning and asked if the HHSAA State Wrestling Championships were still happening at the Blaisdell.

Michael W Perry scoffed and before he could say anything Larry Price said, “brah, just for you, its still on, go down and check it out.”. 😆 😆 😆

    YOU TELL EM “COACH”!!!

  131. wafan February 5, 2013 4:01 pm

Washington has its share of Darwin Award wanna-be’s. You should see the the folks gathering for high surf and floods. And, you should see how the lolos drive in snow and ice.

Amazing to see fools sledding on hills. Looks like fun with parked cars along the sides. All fun and games until someone loses his/her teeth/face/life.

ALL CLEAR given by State Civil Defense. No tsunami warning or watch for Hawaii.

  134. Kevin February 5, 2013 4:05 pm

Just as long as they are the only ones at risk and no one else let em go.

  148. Braddah Moki February 5, 2013 5:05 pm

    #84 gobows,

I’m a die hard warrior fan and I was born on this rock to support our warriors til the day I die.

Going into the spring, Brandon Daily was projected as the no#1 MLB. Midway through spring camp the change was made to switch TJ from the OLB or End to the MLB which puzzled me and felt that he would need to work on reading the line of scrimmage both on the rush and pass. Personally I didn’t see anything wrong with Daily’s grading and performance. FB Vele was at #2, J Monico was no#3 and I didn’t see anything wrong with both of there performances and grading as well. J Monico was a walk-on and played very well during the spring warrior bowl game but was released from the team after wards. I think with L Williams entering the spring and B Fonua entering in the fall, changes where made and the decision to make room was decided based on who was favored and not by how some players performed. What a coincident that the last remaining games of last season, B Daily ended up as the no# MLB anyways. GDL was listed as the no#1 WLB with K Alo at no#2. KV Akeran at no#3. I thought KVA shouldn’t have been #1 from the way he performed during practices and the warrior bowl game. K Alo is fast, but he’s not build to be a LB. More of a strong safety were he would do some danger. He can’t seem to shed blocks up front. GDL maybe done, he was demoted to the scout team midway through last season. For what ever reason, I think he’s on the you know what list. After all the shuffling and a waste of B Fonua’s freshman year, and a decision to move Vele from LB to FB, its seems as if the position coach players where placed in the wrong positions at the wrong time. The results of last years result showed.

Wasn’t it ULM that was on the verge of beat some good teams last year…

  161. Derek February 5, 2013 6:59 pm

Don’t knock UL-Lafayette. They are a very good and up and coming football program. They have excellent skill players and their QB Terrance Broadway is a dual threat playmaker. They gave Florida trouble, and can score a lot of points. If they were in the Mountain West they would be in the top tier of the standings for sure.

  162. dannyp February 5, 2013 7:01 pm

ULM beat Arkansas but ULL won 9 games last year including a 40-24 rout of ULM. And they went to the Swamp and only lost by seven to Florida, a top 5 team.

  163. dannyp February 5, 2013 7:02 pm

ULL also won their bowl game.

    Hmmm…..

  168. WarriorMojo February 5, 2013 7:49 pm

    WarriorMojo:

    November 14th, 2012 at 5:14 pm

    Recruiting pitch:

What do you want in a school? Do you want gold plated bathroom faucets? Do you want uniforms that glow in the dark? Do you want all the latest toys and gadgets that money can buy? Do you want a place where people will cheer for you even though they can’t pronounce your name and don’t know how to cook the food you like?

Because if that’s what you want, if those are the things that MATTER to you in picking a school – if that’s what you value in life for that matter — then by all means Hawaii is not for you. You should go to sc, or udub, or oregon or notre dame or wherever so you can have those things that you value. The path has been paved. The road is clear. If that is what matters in your life, if shiny things and toys and gadgets are so important to you, then you are not a good fit for UH.

Because at UH we don’t have gold plated plumbing. In fact some of our faucets don’t work at all, and the ones that do may not have any soap to wash with anyway. That’s just how it is. We are a public school in a State where everybody is struggling. Your family is struggling. My family is struggling. Your aunty and uncle are struggling. My nephews and nieces are struggling. Times are hard for ALL of us and, honestly, I’m worried about the future, not just of the team or of the university. I’m worried about Hawaii, about our lifestyle and our people. It’s hard to see what the future holds for us.

But I’m not a politician. I don’t have all this clout with the high muckamucks. I’m just a football coach. That’s all I do. I can’t make a billion dollars out of some internet site. (Because if I could, you better believe I’d be doing it).

Nope, all I can do is coach a little ball, but that’s okay because that’s what I love. I love coaching my players. I don’t know if I can actually explain how good it feels when I see the team succeed. That those are my guys doing good things and those people cheering are cheering for them. It’s an incredible feeling.

And you know what else? Call me nuts, but when the team is doing well, when we are winning, I actually believe the team makes a difference, makes things better. People seem happier. I know it sounds kind of silly, right, but I remember the Sugar Bowl days. EVERYBODY wanted to support the team then. People stood in line to buy tshirts! Everybody was full of PRIDE back then.

Well, why can’t it be like that all the time? Every year? People say that was a once in a generation thing, but I don’t believe that for a second. Hawaii can be great again. Hawaii WILL be great again. That is my goal. That is my plan. That is my expectation. This WILL happen.

And you, son, could be a big help in getting there sooner rather than later. We need to change people’s perceptions of UH, but so many of the top kids just go away to the mainland for the bells and whistles. I guess it’s really important to them to play for people in South Bend or Eugene or Westwood, to make those people happy. Whatever, that’s their choice.

But you could help change that. If you were on board, I could tell the next guy that you were here. And that gets him excited and he commits. And then I tell the third kid that you two guys are already here and he gets excited. People would follow you. And pretty soon Hawaii is a national powerhouse. You could help blaze that trail instead of following a path cut by someone else before you.

Think about this for a second. Remember how Manti Teo made such a big deal about his college choice? He kept milking that thing over and over and then he made his decision on television?

Well, imagine if he had gone on camera with an sc cap and a notre dame cap, but then he says, “I love the tradition and history of these schools and it has been a great honor to be recruited by them. But after thinking about it, I realized that there are things that are more important than tradition and history. People. Culture. Family. Those things matter even more. I love Hawaii. It’s where I was born and raised and where my family lives. It’s where I want to live and raise my own family. I want to make a difference there in the place that I call home. So that’s why I choose to be… a WARRIOR for the UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII!” Gosh, chicken skin just thinking about it.

And yeah, I’m a bit sad when I think about Teo. Tried to recruit him to Hawaii, but he wasn’t interested. Tried to tell him he could help people RIGHT HERE, but he wasn’t interested. So now all that publicity and all that money go pouring into the richest school in the country. What’s another million bucks or two to notre dame, seriously? He’s happy, so I guess it worked out for him, but if you can make things better for people, why not make things better for people right HERE at home?

So, what about you, son? What matters to you? They always say that if the top Hawaii recruits stayed home every year, we’d be a perennial Top Ten team. And I think that’s true. We can’t afford to give you an IPad. You won’t have an electronic koa locker with a flashing neon nameplate and you won’t be flying on charters for most road games.

But you know what? If you come to UH, you can make a difference. You can help make things better, for the team, yes, but more importantly for the school and the State and the people of Hawaii. Is that important to you? Does that matter?

#168 . . . Inspirational? YES. Very good pitch. Unfortunately, 17-20 year olds do care A LOT about the things you mention in the first paragraph. Not to say they don’t care about the other things you mention, but glitz, fashion, reputation, etc. are VERY appealing to young athletes. Unfortunately, the U of O’s out there don’t need to advertise those things, they just have them. They advertise the BCS rankings, the pro potential, the attention, the opportunity that the spotlight provides, etc.

With that said, you hit the nail on the head with being a part of something great. As overplayed as it may seem, the Sugar Bowl year was GREAT for UH players and fans alike, as I’m sure the Holiday Bowl year was, regardless of however some want to down play it. The potential to inspire and affect an entire state is what I wish all the recruits could realize.

too bad the UH wasn’t able to continue the success of the Holiday and Sugar Bowls…instead both times the program took a down turn (Paul Johnson and June Jones leaving) that eventually resulted with the firing of the HC (Bob Wagner and Greg McMackin). Norm Chow had a similar 1st season to Fred Von Appen, BUT, FVA did not have half the recruiting savvy that NC has. on paper, the football program appears to be moving in the right direction. cant wait till 8-29…BEAT THE TROJANS!
