LB coach candidates: 199 and counting

There are 199 applicants for the Rainbow Warriors’ soon-to-be vacated linebacker coach’s job.

That number is expected to grow when HR personnel check the mailbox tomorrow.

Two weeks ago, Tony Tuioti was told he would not be retained as linebacker coach after his contract expires in March. This past Friday was the first day UH officials could review the applications. There probably was a delay in some deliveries because of Christmas. (We won’t mention the brown trucks.)

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Wow, gonna take a while to go through all da applications.

  3. wafan December 29, 2013 9:32 am

Hmmmmmm, maybe one person submitted multiple applications using pseudonyms?

  4. Da Punchbowl Kid December 29, 2013 9:33 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

199?! Wow indeed! Have you ever seen such interest in an assistants position in previous coaching regimes, Mr. Tsai?

  5. Bryson December 29, 2013 9:37 am

I noticed that last season after Al Noga was made an honorary captain he never left the sideline for the rest of the season…He looked like he really missed being on the sidelines…

  6. Bowwar December 29, 2013 9:38 am

I’m sure there must be at least a dozen local applicants…

  7. Old School Dave December 29, 2013 9:39 am

    Good morning, all.

Not going to beat a dead horse, but the UH system’s hiring procedure sure can slow down the hiring of assistant coaches in the athletic dept.

  8. tommui December 29, 2013 9:48 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

What happened to all those nay-sayers who predicted that we would not be able to get coaches?

  9. Haleakala December 29, 2013 9:50 am

Wow, that is a lot of competition to get one job!

  10. Old School Dave December 29, 2013 9:54 am

    ST: Thanks for the updates.

It’s pretty much a given that no OC will be hired, and that Jordan Wynn will probably be named full-time QB coach. Do you know if Chow will be hiring a full-time and experienced WR coach?

  11. kapakahi December 29, 2013 10:03 am

    #10,

If Wynn is hired as the QB coach, that would make 4 full-time offensive position coaches (with OL – Naeole, TE – Rauscher, RB – Wiesehan), while the defense only has 3 full-time defensive position coaches (DL, LB, DB) so wouldn’t seem like the offense would be hiring another position coach for WR.

  12. NorthShoreFan December 29, 2013 10:04 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos!….

need to recuperate from making mochi…700+ pounds will get you tired…really sticky situation…to clean up.

  13. Old School Dave December 29, 2013 10:08 am

#11: Thanks, Kapakahi. Makes sense. Max number of coaches is 9, right?

  15. jonj December 29, 2013 10:24 am

11 I thought demo doubles as the safeties coach. And since Wynn is also the “OC” it would make sense to hire a WR coach.

  16. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 10:41 am

    JonJ:
I think Demo initially worked with the safeties, but Daronte’ Jones handled all of the DBs for most of the past season.

  17. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 10:43 am

My gut feeling is one of the new hires will work with most of the linebackers while the other will work with the ends/jokers.

  18. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 10:49 am

    Old School Dave:
It is a fair process if, say, you’re going to hire an administrative assistant for the American Studies department.
But athletics are different, obviously. Assistant coaches are union members, but they’re on one-year contracts. What I think is puzzling is when you have to go through the long vetting process to hire GAs. Take Richard Torres. He’s already been screened several times as a player; did he become a different person when applying for a GA spot?

  19. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 10:59 am

I did not realize Dan Dierdorf was still alive.

  20. Kili December 29, 2013 11:01 am

18 ST- government and union red tape sooo much is a waste. never happen in the private sector…

  21. NorthShoreFan December 29, 2013 11:05 am

Me thinks if there is a need to expedite a hiring process the union would be willing to cooperate and get it done. It’s all in how you do the process. Need someone to take the lead and get it done.

ST excellent point. Who is requiring the multiple screening?

  22. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 11:06 am

    North Shore:
    I think it’s HR.
It took a long time for Torres to be approved.

  23. NorthShoreFan December 29, 2013 11:08 am

If it’s because of multiple coaches then might be understandable. The requirement for a coaches position after being in the system for a while, not understandable.

  24. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 11:10 am

I also think that people in the field should be on specific selection committees.
It’s impressive to run a bank, but how does that translate to hiring a head coach?
When they hire media relations staffers, they never have, say, a newspaper reporter on the committee. I mean, if you’re going to hire a chef, shouldn’t you have a fat person on the committee?

  25. ai-eee-soos December 29, 2013 11:10 am

anyone looking for a HC job?

UMASS needs a HC and staff.

go for it – you know who …

  26. NorthShoreFan December 29, 2013 11:10 am

Being too, excuse the term “anal” will not get us good personnel. The lyrics come to mind….”you don’t know what you got till its gone”…might hold true if we make candidates go through too much hoops and bs..

  27. NorthShoreFan December 29, 2013 11:12 am

ST…selecting the head of a bank might get you $ if you follow the “buddy-buddy” relationships….but, it may not always be true

  28. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 11:15 am

There’s another interesting rule. As I understand it, suppose you’re hired to be a paper shredder. Then you get moved to paper collator. Now suppose you’re a screwup as a collator. You can’t be fired. The only way you can be let go is if they move you back to your original position, paper shredder, then screw up there. I remember there was a guy who was hired for a position, then was moved to a second position, where he struggled. The original position was dissolved, so he could never move back there, thus he could never be fired. I can understand the thinking: It prevents people from punitively moving to a position in which they’ll fail. But, still …

  29. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 11:16 am

Conversely, if you recruit a guy as a running back, then move him to linebacker, he really shouldn’t be faulted if he’s not very good at linebacker.

  30. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 11:20 am

    NorthShore:
True that. I know some were added to the search committee because they were going to help lure JJ from the Chargers.
But I do have empathy for any AD.
I mean, I wouldn’t even know where to begin to hire a diving coach.
And if I’m looking for a sailing coach, I’d probably make the mistake of putting Thurston Howell III on the committee.

  31. Old School Dave December 29, 2013 11:23 am

Temple has cut 7 varsity sports:

  32. hon2255 December 29, 2013 11:25 am

    Mr Tsai

Whatever happened to the former NaKoa pres, the Chinese guy with the crew cut and toothpick in his mouth, use to stand on sidelines during JJ era, didn’t see him this past season or previous on sidelines, and not at basketball games either, you must know him ,is he still around the program?

  33. kapakahi December 29, 2013 11:31 am

    #29,

Apparently doesn’t apply to Joey Iosefa……who was recruited to play DB (at 190 lbs)…..but outgrew the position and was instead auditioned at LB…..before being moved to RB.

  34. st. anthony trojan December 29, 2013 11:32 am

yea right on st.. me would get sam choy.. if was hiring a chef…should be the process like judges..committee selects a few.. n leave up to the “governor” (NC) TO PICK…but still able to select sumone not on the short list..he has to work with them…he should shoulder the responsibility..if not work out.. he will eventually be solely accountable..not the so called “committee” which…can n always changes….

  35. kapakahi December 29, 2013 11:33 am

    #32,

    Ben Yee?

  36. Old School Dave December 29, 2013 11:42 am

Agree that UH should let the AD search for and hire the coaches he best deems the best candidate and fit. If it’s a bad hire, then the AD will be held accountable. UH seems to love committees. Don’t see the point of having a head of a bank or hospital decide on who the best coaching candidates will be for any sport. I guess, change comes slowly here.

Mitch Kaaialii was recruited as a tight end under Dick Tomey in 86. He was moved to OL when Bob Wagner took over and grew into an All-Conference tackle. Same with Theo Adams.

  37. kapakahi December 29, 2013 11:44 am

    #29,

Hopefully also won’t apply to Penitito Fa’alologo…….who was recruited to play LB……but got moved to DE……and now FB.

  38. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 29, 2013 11:52 am

smoke and mirrors folks, smoke and mirrors.

  39. papajoe2 December 29, 2013 11:55 am

I think all head coaches should hire their own people who will work under them IF they pass a screening by whatever committee. We don’t want to hire, say, a child molester.

  40. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 12:01 pm

UH actually uses an investigative service to check out candidates.
That’s why it sometimes takes a while.

  41. RedZone December 29, 2013 12:01 pm

I would have hoped that we would have gotten a DC first and get his input on a defensive assistant coach. Not unusual for DC to coach linebackers. I think Aranda did that when he took over as our DC.

  42. Warrior Dave December 29, 2013 12:05 pm

So much insight this morning ST. THANK YOU!!

I don’t understand the hiring process. I don’t know why they couldn’t at least “review” the applications without contact. That way, they can weed out the no way in heck applicants like myself and other couch potato coaches. On the deadline date, they would have a few apps to review before starting the inquiry and interview process.

BTW, does Chow review all apps or does someone screen it for him? Hope he’s the one to review all.

  43. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 12:05 pm

I think there will be simultaneous hires.

  44. Warrior Dave December 29, 2013 12:06 pm

Sorry ST my comment above was a late post. Thanks for answering part of my question.

  45. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 12:10 pm

    Warrior Dave:
    Chow reviews all applications.
There are all sorts, from high school through the NFL.
When there’s an opening, people automatically send out applications.
Regardless of what people think of UH, it is a Division I-A program, and there aren’t that many coaching jobs for the number of people who wish to be FBS coaches.

Old School Dave – #31 – Pacific is dropping men’s vb after this season, bringing the MPSF back down to 12 teams. Opens up 2 games for non-conference play. This year UH only had 4 non-conference games – the 3 Outrigger Tournament games, and I believe, one of next week’s games.

  48. Warrior Dave December 29, 2013 12:17 pm

    Hon2255 & Kapakahi,

Coach Chow banned Ben Yee from standing with the team. He was told he had to stand with the other boosters or end zone. He made a decision to not attend anymore UH football games.

Ben is not the only one as other medical people were told to get out of the area. Not the way you treat people that have been faithful supporters to the program that have brought many $$$$ into the program for many years. I haven’t gone to the football banquet since they went luau format but they may have eliminated the Ben Yee Most Inspirational Player award.

  49. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 12:18 pm

    St.AnthonyTrojan:
I don’t like the idea of closing off sections for football, especially the yellow, which offers a pretty good view. Instead of trying to create a more intimate setting, UH should go the other way and try to fill those seats. That will take better promotions, a better experience, better scheduling (can’t go weeks between home games) and, of course, better performance on the field.

  50. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 12:23 pm

Not exactly sure what happened, but I think in an effort to whittle the number of people on the sideline, Ben Yee was inadvertently caught in the sweep.
That’s a fence that needs to be mended.
Ben has done a lot for the program, especially establishing and then carrying Na Koa, all as unpaid worker. (I’m not sure if Na Koa paid for his travel.) Plus, he’s a good guy.
Whatever the rift, Ben Yee needs to be back in the fold.

  51. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 12:28 pm

I don’t like cluttered sidelines, either, but what else does UH have to offer?
People can donate out of the goodness of their hearts (and some tax credits), but the bottom line is: What’s the value of being a supporter?
People need something in exchange besides a hat and shirt.
If it makes some boosters happy to give a little more in exchange for a game in the booth or two quarters on the field, what’s the harm?
I’d even go so far as let a couple of boosters on the team buses to the stadium. For a price, of course.

  52. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 12:32 pm

I like the formula Charlie Wade does with his boosters.
Before matches, he gives a little chat, explaining what to look for.
Sure, it’s different between football and men’s volleyball. Volleyball doesn’t have that many variety of schemes, other than changing rotations. But it does help fans connect better with the team.
One thing UH could do is invite season-ticket holders to watch football scrimmages. Then after that, the fans could have Q&A’s with the coaches.

  53. boolakanaka December 29, 2013 12:34 pm

49–ST, I am in total accordance with you. What’s next, we can’t fill up 30,000, so we cone-off the first fifteen rows in the stadium? Next thing you know, your playing Pacific Lutheran again. Low expectations are the underpinnings for low results.

  54. kapakahi December 29, 2013 12:35 pm

    #51,

Heard that the ride on the team buses to the stadium on game day is in the works……for the right price…..of course.

  55. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 12:37 pm

How about choosing a couple of fans to participate in the haka?

  56. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 12:37 pm

Speaking of which: I think the coaches need to perform the haka, too.
One team, one dream, etc., etc.

  57. st. anthony trojan December 29, 2013 12:42 pm

yea… st..on # 52… SUMONE SHOULD GRAB THAT IDEA.. N LEAD IT… N WORK ON IT FOR NEXT YEAR..what does the ad do when there is a slow period.. besides getting punched out at games…think that is excellent idea.. n he should lead n run with it..

  61. sashimi December 29, 2013 12:45 pm

Team should quit doing the haka. Looks so half-azz. Some going through the motion half-azz, others don’t know wtf they’re doing, and the rest doing the wrong moves. Lose money!

  63. Old Diver December 29, 2013 12:57 pm

Chow not only banned medical volunteers from the sidelines but he sent many of them letters stating their services were no longer needed. These were doctors who gave the team free services and free supplies which amounted to tens of thousands of dollars a year. This is why many of us were taken back when Ben Jay said he is considering closing the yellow section to save a few thousand.

  64. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 1:01 pm

And I would have played the Colorado game.

  65. kapakahi December 29, 2013 1:03 pm

ST must be calling them right about now?

  66. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 1:05 pm

I heard about Kwamane Bowens after the season, but they were hoping he’d change his mind. I think the distance is a problem.

  67. Da Punchbowl Kid December 29, 2013 1:06 pm

Make a standard haka year in year out. Make it easy to learn, but meaningful. Then teach everybody, fans, cheerleaders and players to do it. Imagine a home game with EVERYBODY but the opposing team and their fans doing a pergame and maybe, a post game haka. Who needs Sweet Caroline when you have the haka? Just sayin… we ARE Polynesia’s team after all.

  70. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 1:16 pm

    Kapakahi:
From what I heard, I guess it’s second hand, is that Hawaii is just too far away.
It’s not over playing time or the coaches. (DJ recruited him, and he worked well with Luke Matthews.)
He’s a talented guy and, if he leaves, he’ll have no trouble finding another school.

  71. 3-Prong December 29, 2013 1:16 pm

DPK 67: Got to see Oregon do the same to the song “Shout” (as in “you make me wanna”). That was cool, but a standard Haka would be the coolest!!

    ……..oh, and Let’s Go Cowboys!

  72. RainbowCliff December 29, 2013 1:17 pm

Happy New Year Tsaiko Nation, it has been a while but I have been busy here in LA just doing one thing “building connections”. The New Year for me will be uplifting and promising as I do have Hawaii in the fold on many opportunities in which IF they open their eyes and take care of the “small details” then success financially to the LWC, Hawaii athletic teams and bringing in new membership to UHAA is on the rise as “I am in it to win it” !

I have Dodgers, Lakers, Clippers, Hollywood Entertainment, American Idol (Care of Rich2176) and just a signature away securing Tiger Woods Academy of Orange County. 2014 is going to be HUGH as I have 5 Los Angeles High Schools locked up to recruit potential UH students as Palos Verdes H.S. and Beverly Hills H.S. are scheduled for the Month of February with myself becoming Jed Clampet as I reprise the role of “The Aloha Beverly Hillbilly” coming to recruit the rich and famous driving nothing but my 4 door European Coupe Hawaiian License plate Sedan. UH admissions has received my 662 interest cards from my LA recruiting efforts and working diligently following through to bring them on board as future UH students. Proud of the accomplishments with admission office rewarding me with a nice Christmas gift for my efforts.

It’s all good Tsaiko Nation as we will get better this coming 2014 as U of H is my #1 priority and I am the “LA pied piper” who has the magic flute with my main guy that I recently met living in San Pedro who is nothing but “Aloha Hawaii Admirer” !

Take care every one and thank you all for your GREATNESS as I continue to BUILD the aloha spirit !

  73. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 1:18 pm

Also heard UH is trying to help Allen Sampson transfer to James Madison after he graduates in May.
I’m pretty sure Sampson should get a couple of years because he missed nearly 2.5 seasons with really bad injuries. The torn hamstring, it could be argued, is a result of overcompensating following the knee injury. We’ll see. Another good guy. Wish him the best.

  74. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 1:20 pm

One thing is you can’t plan spontaneity.
The next popular thing will be created by a UH fan, maybe even by one of the readers.

    #70,

Understandable……that the long distance might become an issue…..but hopefully not for others.

  78. Warrior Dave December 29, 2013 1:24 pm

    ST,

Love what Charlie Wade is doing and trying to connect. But hard when your HC think its a waste of time to schmooze with boosters and fans. It’s no secret that he doesn’t want to speak on the radio after the games and will only do a minimal number of Call The Coach shows and immediately digs out without thanking the ones who came to the show. He will not talk to the Animals in the afternoons and can’t remember if he spoke to Bobby C. In the morning this year. My Associate asked Chow if he would speak to his Rotary group. Chow asked how much are you going to pay me? He said he doesn’t do it for free.

Booster and fan support will continue to decline. The Punahou Mafia are growing tired and Chows days are numbered. Next year could be his last without posting a winning seaso and strong finish to next years season.

  79. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 1:27 pm

When I was covering UH basketball, the coaches couldn’t wait for Midnight Ohana. The way they figured it, a new guy was vulnerable to wanting to leave anytime before the first practice. Of course, things have changed since then, with flexible rules that allow coaches to conduct conditioning drills earlier.
When you’re dealing with young people, many away from home for the first time, there are a lot of emotional factors involved. The first semester of college is a difficult adjustment for almost everybody. Whatever decision a player makes, the wish is he’ll pursue his education. And, as a parent, it would be awfully nice if a team or school is picking up the tuition and school expenses.

  80. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 1:34 pm

    David Platte.
One day he was here, the next he was gone.
    It’s very difficult to lose a 7-footer.

  81. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 1:35 pm

One year, volleyball recruited two middle blockers named Shane.
We all thought the one from Florida would transfer.
Turns out one did leave during the first semester — the one from California.
Like I said, you never can tell with young’uns.

  82. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 1:37 pm

    Wait.
    Was his name Platte?
    Or Platke?
Geez, it sucks to be old and forgetful.

  83. mokihana December 29, 2013 1:39 pm

  84. Bowwar December 29, 2013 1:42 pm

Sorry to hear about Bowen…Hope there are no more heading for the door.

  85. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 1:44 pm

OK, his name was David Pletke.
Never really liked basketball, but he was 7 feet, so he was pushed into it.

If I’m not mistaken, one of Bowens’ family members died during the season. I think he went back for the funeral. It wasn’t an easy first semester for him. But, again, good guy, good student, good player.

  87. ALLAN December 29, 2013 1:46 pm

    39. CHOW IS A GENGHIS KHAN. BEN YEE WAS ADMINISTERING TO UH FOOTBALL PLAYERS IN THE 70’S WHEN CHOW WAS STILL IN DIAPERS. I REMEMBER HIM GIVING AN INJECTION TO OUR 6’9″ DT DURING PRACTICE.

  88. ALLAN December 29, 2013 1:48 pm

    OOPS, I MEANT #48.

  89. Bowwar December 29, 2013 1:52 pm

When was the Platte kid recruited? Don’t remember that one.

  90. Bowwar December 29, 2013 1:54 pm

Mack’s wife, Heather, used to hold a class for the wahines on football, etc. if I recall correctly.

  91. Bowwar December 29, 2013 1:55 pm

The KC Chiefs playing SD tough with their second stringers…

  92. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 1:56 pm

    Allan:
Are you thinking of Ben Yee or Dr. Yoo? I think the latter used to dispense, uh, medical advice.

  93. Former UH Athlete December 29, 2013 1:59 pm

Investigative services to background check candidates… 199 apps… The investigators are gonna need to hire some people.

Glad to see there’s more than enough choices. Just hope UH selects somebody how has a good network for recruiting. Maybe another former NFL player like Naeole would be good also. I think those guys can really coach up players if they have good teaching skills. Being a NFL vet will carry a lot of respect from the players they coach.

Maybe UH will be lucky enough to have a retired NFL-er with an education degree that applied.

  94. jm2375 (iPad) December 29, 2013 2:02 pm

#81 – yeah, and then the other Shane transferred after 2 years…

MVB boosters also provide post-game meals and have post-game potlucks 3 times during the season. I know it’s hard to do for the 105-member football team, but how about allowing a few boosters to attend the post-game meals? It’s a chance to connect with the players and coaches. The boosters at the lower levels of membership should be able to participate, not just those at the upper levels.

  95. Former UH Athlete December 29, 2013 2:03 pm

91… Chase Daniels is a quality QB. Though he was way better than Gabbert when coming out of Mizzou. I think Daniels was unlucky that he came out before last years class of QBs. He’s got a decent arm, is very mobile, and accurate. He’s a guy that’s been buried on the depth chart because of his size and he’s been on teams with established QBs.

sad 2 see about mr. yee n the doctors..that is really foolish… my suggestion.. we all plat a mega million lottery.. so we can buy out his contract if we hit he he he…seems like sum people never learn… seems like a former coach would not allow former players in locker rooms b 4.. we know what his record was.. n what eventually happen to him huh… auwe..guess if you local.. but away for a while.. you forget how small the island is..n surely it will come back to haunt you..

remember hawaiian airlines before.. n liberty house..they went through that also.. being high maka maka has it down side also..aloha airlines tried to blame..go for their demise.. not so for me..they were to snug.. n tried to expand to the continent.. n not have the personnel to warrant it..example…we had a group of 100 students.. going to cva.. tried to book 1 year early.. they did not return my two calls..3 call was.. sorry we cant take all the same time as the plane would be full.. they wanted to leave 30 seats open…for next day.. this was a chorus..did not accept that..but me always thought..filling the plane like a hotel room every nite was the goal..he he guess not..their attitude.. was like hawaiian several years earlier..both changed.. but only one is around to tell about it..n get this.. the price of the ticket was 50 bucks more then there published price..me could never understand that…Aloha mr. chow….for some.. be nice to see you go after next season.. best you mend ur fences before you leave..my prediction.. losing season next year.. gosh how me hope me is wrong.. even if crow not taste to good.. give me sum huli huli sauce for my crow..please… he he he IMUA TSAIKOS

The medical thing is a dispute that doesn’t have anything to do with Chow. There are a lot of different issues happening on campus. It’s quite a sight.

  99. st. anthony trojan December 29, 2013 2:33 pm

WELL the problem me see here ..is the nameless faces making decisions..they should be identified by name.. for politicians also.. making decisions there…thanks for that insight… st..n if mr. chow did not send letter to doctors.. who signed it.. get a copy..so we can see who the idiot really is … some doctor must still have a copy ?

  100. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 2:40 pm

A doctor friend of mine who gave years of service to the program received the letter that his services were no longer required. The running joke among the doctors is that Chow fired them from voluntary positions. Sad thing is Chow fired them before he met any of them.

  106. NorthShoreFan December 29, 2013 3:28 pm

Shane Austin, remember his family coming to the tailgate after the last game and he humbly stated, …. I shouldn’t have thrown that ball…..very humble and nice young man. I hope he is doing well and also his family. …was great to meet them. me thinks somebody got a pic of that day.

  107. Kapahulu December 29, 2013 3:46 pm

Thanks for the update on Ben Yee. I wondered what had happened to him. I missed seeing him on the sidelines and at the Na Koa weekly Luncheons.
It seems like a stab in the back for Ben Yee after he helped to found The Na Koa Football Club with Bob Wagner.

  108. WWF December 29, 2013 4:04 pm

Seems that financial challenges are at the root of the problems at UH. From restricting selection of qualified coaches to recruiting budgets, to paying teachers within the DOE.

Why not allow DHHL to build casinos on their lands in Hawaii and tax a portion of the revenue for education, which would include UH athletics?

With the amount of visitors visiting already coming to Hawaii and providing Hawaii residents another option to keep their money in Hawaii instead of going to Vegas, we could solve many of our budget woes.

Need VIP booths for corporate boosters to raise serious financial support. That will open up the sidelines.

  110. Aaron December 29, 2013 4:31 pm

I’m glad someone finally mentioned the Ben Yee thing. I was floored when I heard what happened with him last year. What kind of head coach kicks the president emeritus of your booster club off the sidelines? If you are going to change things for the sake of change, you better be able to back it up with some wins… but so far, Chow hasn’t been able to do that. If we are gonna win only one game, we may as well open up the sidelines for folks who raise a lot of money for the program.

Assuming that both Miller and Bowens are in good academic standing after the Fall Semester and won’t be returning in January for the Spring Semester, what effect (if any) does their departure (after only 1 semester) have in terms of available scholarships on this next 2014 recruiting class and/or the next 2015 recruiting class?

he’s not superman and now we know he is a question mark of a HC!

  116. HawaiiMongoose December 29, 2013 5:01 pm

Maybe I’m missing something, but shouldn’t the DC be hired before the LB coach so the DC can have a voice in who is hired as the LB coach? And how many applicants for DC does UH have?

    108. Native American tribes operate gaming establishments for two reasons: one they are federally recognized and thus domestic sovereigns, and two, they have permission via gaming compacts through their respective states.

At present Native Hawaiians have neither. While that may change in the near future, that is not the case today. Further, historically, the seats of power for our political establishment, e.g. Senator Inouye, were adamant about never allowing gaming to be established in Hawai’i.

  120. manoa#1 December 29, 2013 5:30 pm

  125. hon2255 December 29, 2013 6:32 pm

Thanks for the update about Ben Yee one of major boosters no longer supporting the program, this is really unfortunate, Chow is oblivious and arrogant . Yee has been with the program forever it seems , also remember seeing him at men’s basketball games where he had front lower level seats near the bench. Sorry also to hear about the medical professionals who donate their time and own money getting miffed by the new medical doc for UH sports. Even my chiropractor Joe Cardenalli got the shaft f, used to donate his time to the football team before every game to adjust as many backs as he could for the boys.Pake Ben Jay needs to smooth over a lot of burnt bridges brought on by or with the Chow rejime. Sounds more like the Kim Jun Un rejime!!

  126. jeezy33 December 29, 2013 6:46 pm

Norm Chow is sinking this ship faster than I could have ever imagined…. I’ve never seen a coach lose his locker room like NC has… Not that I approve of Mack as a coach but the players all respected him at the very least. We can recruit all these players all we want but if we can’t win them over and take care of them while they are here, this program isn’t going anywhere…

  127. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 6:57 pm

It actually was an administrative guy who booted Yee.
It was a mistake. I don’t think Yee was one of the guys who was supposed to be booted. I also think it was a last-straw deal for Yee. It didn’t seem he was too happy with the direction things were going in the years leading to that incident.

  128. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 7:00 pm

I think the doctor people were referring to was the eye guy, right? Dr. Ronn Reynolds?
The team doctor and the surgeons remained the same, as far as I know.
The coaches don’t hire (or fire) medical people. That’s a different level.

  129. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 7:33 pm

So, I decided instead of reading these comments, I’ll just pick up the phone and call Ben Yee. (Disclosure: We’ve known each other for about 35 years.)
Ben said there’s no feud or hurt feelings with Chow.
He said he’s just fed up with the “system” and the accompanying bureaucracy that hinders even the most basic fund-raising efforts.
But he said he is now stress free, and his blood pressure went from 130/90 to 120/68.
He also dislikes the idea of lowering the number of available seats at the stadium.
    And that’s the story.

  130. Bryson December 29, 2013 7:36 pm

Its so funny when I see a certain poster post here and act nice then goes to another board and post crap about Stephen not knowing what he’s talking about…all I can say is this know it all guru should man up

  131. Buffoman December 29, 2013 7:38 pm

I wonder if blaming would be so rampart if the team was winning? Losing is not fun, granted but it may be best to know before affixing blame.

ST appears to have great insight and I tend to believe he knows much more than what he releases. Understandable, given that I would tend to believe some things are said in confidence.

  132. UHfan808 December 29, 2013 7:39 pm

Good Sunday evening, Tsai-kos and Lurk-ers!

199 and counting!? That’s pretty cool!

Choose wisely please, coach and admin!

  133. Old School Dave December 29, 2013 7:42 pm

Thanks Stephen for getting Ben Yee’s side of the story.

I predicted that this would be a long off-season, after going 1-11. It goes without saying that you’re not going to have many happy people. I’m sure there will be some more players transferring out. Spring practice can’t begin soon enough. Bottom line is that Chow has got to win in 2014. No more excuses. It’s do or die time.

  134. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 7:45 pm

I should have spoken to Ben Yee earlier, but — and this is kind of embarrassing — I didn’t really know he was missing.
Life’s a blur during football season.

  135. Moocher December 29, 2013 7:47 pm

if benny goes, hey, ben jay had better sit norm down and tell him…wins and losses are one thing, but being able to keep things tight and not have them unravel is another. i can accept give norm at least 3 years to see how his recruits develop. but if his star LOCAL recruits bail and his management style just is not a healthy one, then ben jay needs to factor that in, perhaps above wins and losses.

although, admittedly i’m not in the locker and practices and around the team. i don’t know what exactly chow was responsible for and what he was not responsible for.

it seems to me chow will pick up noga. although, as some as mentioned, i would think most leaders would rather build their staff then inherit one.

saddened by these assumptions. all these things further point to losing men’s sports and a few women’s in order to keep football afloat….much like Temple. i think we gonna be D2 soon. chow in my limited opinion needs to become a manager, not a dictator…to me, he just does not seem like a leader. but that’s ok, not all managers are leaders, not all leaders can manage. please get the coaches in place and get to work as soon as possible, and please, do not lose benny. losing benny may mean the tide on the north shore is all going out.

  136. Moocher December 29, 2013 7:50 pm

    ST
is it fair to say that admin really handcuffs things….and fair to say money handcuffs other things?

between the two, in your opinion what hurts the team more, money or admin?

  137. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 7:56 pm

    Buffoman:
Two things I’ve come to realize since I’ve become an old fart:
    • I don’t like to see people lose their jobs. They had to go, but I still felt badly for Frank Arnold, Fred vonAppen and Herman Frazier. These are people’s livelihood You have to feel, at least a little, for them.
    • I have empathy for players. Being honest doesn’t mean having to reveal all the warts. For instance, there was a player who just wasn’t very smart. He kept making mistakes. You are what you are, and some people lack physical ability, some lack mental ability. There’s no need to embarrass someone for natural deficiencies.
And I actually do that here. There are some people who are a little bit off, but, hey, if it makes someone feel better to blow off steam or vent or feel informative, what’s the harm? There’s enough room for everybody.

  138. 3-Prong December 29, 2013 8:04 pm

Oh Oh! All of a sudden everyone is wondering if they are the one that is “a little bit off”!!!!

  139. kapakahi December 29, 2013 8:11 pm

“kapakahi” already says that I’m a “bit off”.

But then again ST already knew this……since we go back……to our HS glory days.

  140. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 8:11 pm

There are a lot of factors that affect the temperature of the blog.
If the Cowboys lose, there’s a morose feel. I’ve noticed Cowboys fans tend to become depressed rather than angry.
If the 49ers lose, there’s a lot of whining.
If the Jets lose, the blog host is pissed. That’s when I’ll zap the crap out of any stupid post. (Deep breaths, deep breaths. They beat the Dolphins today.)

  141. Buffoman December 29, 2013 8:12 pm

    ST, True.

  142. kapakahi December 29, 2013 8:19 pm

    ST,

At least Greg Salas caught 1 pass…..for 6 yards……while Alex Green did have 1 rush……but for no gain.

Main thing is…..that both were on the active roster……with Rex looking like his job is still safe for next season.

  143. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 8:20 pm

Actually, I appreciate all of you.
It’s good to interact and get a feel for what people think.

While nice to see the Samoan Sack Man around the Lower Campus nowadays……just can’t see a formal coaching position in his future.

  145. tommui December 29, 2013 8:29 pm

Thank you ST for (1) talking to Ben Yee and (2) finding out about the doctor.

Most of the comments made are people that don’t know the whole story and jump to (wrong) conclusions and then they bring out the pitchfolks and torches ready to lynch whoever.

  149. Old School Dave December 29, 2013 9:06 pm

Conceivable that the next DC may also be in charge of the linebackers, too. I would also assume that all spots would up for grabs at that position with a new coach coming in.

  150. cocobean December 29, 2013 9:18 pm

I keep telling myself to stay positve. Don’t let my dissatifaction with the Chow regime consume me. Got to believe in the young men who represent us on the field will turn things around. Got to believe the players will take it into their own hands to get better individually and as a team.

Got to believe that seniors to be like Yap, Samia,Jener, Harding, Iosefa and Graham step up and lead the underclassmen from now till fall camp. That they’ll keep the team together in the off season working on their conditioning and skill improvement.

Got to keep believing the players will succeed in turning things around not matter who is coaching them.

Very sad about Ben Yee. Coach Chow needs to learn to treat people right. Call Bobby Curren, talk to Stephen Tsai, the Sports Animals, Ferd Lewis and even Skinny Dave Readon. Norm Chow has been on the mainland too long, he forgot the aloha sprit.

  153. hon2255 December 29, 2013 9:26 pm

  154. Inyoface December 29, 2013 9:28 pm

Since Hawaii has no pro team, I never was a “true” fan of any mainland team. I’m more of a fan of individual pro players. I did however like the 90s Braves while watching them on TBS while cutting school, the 90 Bulls and the 90s Niners. Hmm maybe I’m just an old fut.

  156. jeezy33 December 29, 2013 9:35 pm

    So stop tying to instigate…

  157. WWF December 29, 2013 9:42 pm

Maybe DHHL, with its current challenges, may not be the right organization to manage gaming in Hawaii.

    #119

Senator Inoye is no longer with us, and so is his senior ability to bring back to Hawaii federal funded projects.
If we are able to bring same sex marriage to the table in special session, perhaps we can also consider gaming as a potential solution to help bridge some of our financial challenges in Hawaii. Repairing and maintaining our infrastructure, improving on our current education system, adressing our high cost of living . . . increasing taxes on Hawaii residents is not the solution.

  158. jm2375 (iPad) December 29, 2013 10:21 pm

I don’t see the problem with a lottery. Use the proceeds to fund DOE and UH. Don’t want a lottery? Then don’t play. I lived in the DC area for over 7 years and bought lottery tickets ONCE as a gift for my future mother-in-law.

  159. Former UH Athlete December 29, 2013 10:24 pm

Don’t be too concerned over guys transferring out. Especially if it’s a guy who hasn’t contributed significant playing time. It happens at every program every year. There’s about 100 players on a roster each year…. it’s impossible to satisfy everybody. Besides, it’s not like UH hasn’t benefited from players leaving previous programs under less than perfect terms.

You should be concerned if a full time starter or primary backup wants to transfer out.

Fonua has a chance to earn a starting spot vs a few other guys with little experience, so he’s definitely missing out on his opportunity to shine if he does in fact leave. If he leaves, he’s going to be at the bottom of the depth chart and have to earn his way up wherever he goes unless it’s to a lower division.

  160. Former UH Athlete December 29, 2013 10:30 pm

159… I just checked the CA Lottery website and the lottery has generated $1.3 billion towards the DOE, marking the thirteenth straight year the lotto has generated $1 billion+ to the state DOE.

I know Hawaii’s smaller population would only produce a small fraction of the CA lotto proceeds but if Hawaii only pulls in 10% of California’s lotto sales, using the same revenue split, that’s $130 million.

  161. jeezy33 December 29, 2013 10:48 pm

    160.

Hawaii is a 1 win team and the so called foundation of our 1st 2 recruiting classes are slowly leaving. Bowens definitely had a huge roll in the future. So was Drake Miller being the MLB of the future… Of course people are concerned and have every right to be…

  162. truth December 29, 2013 11:12 pm

jeezy, brah, the only truth is that you are so full of yourself it’s pathetic. Simply pathetic.

  164. Stephen Tsai December 29, 2013 11:22 pm

The most entertaining part about this blog for me is reading daily the excuses the tsaikos make up every day for their inept uncle norm.

    For example:
    – norm can’t win because he needs at least three years
    – norm can’t win cause no money
    – norm can’t win cause cupboard was empty
    – norm can’t win cause his assistants can’t coach
    – norm cant win cause you non believers keep harping on him
    – blah, blah, blah

Each day, a new excuse is made up by one tsaiko, and then the rest of the tsaikos spend the next 200 posts discussing and supporting that excuse

    Very entertaining…

This is what is entertaining about the blog.

Fact: Benny Fonua had his chances. Was too slow, put on bad weight (in my opinion), played pretty much all season on special teams but was rarely in on the tackle. He wants out? I say let him. This has nothing to do with Chow living up to promises. What does he want? Play every down and get embarrased because he can’t hold his own? Hey, I could be wrong, but I have attended every home game and watched virtually every away game for the past 30 years. I want the local kids to shine too, but no can help if he no help himself.

Attended initial Na Koa meeting with Norm Chow as speaker. He essentially blew off the membership, obviously unprepared to speak. Never attended another Na Koa meeting.

158–Just as a FYI, Gambling is legal under US federal law, although there are significant restrictions pertaining to interstate and online gambling. Each state is free to regulate or prohibit the practice within its borders. If state-run lotteries are included, almost every state can be said to allow some form of gambling. However, casino-style gambling is much less widespread. Federal law provides leeway for Native American Trust Land to be used for games of chance if an agreement is put in place between the State and the Tribal Government (e.g. A ‘Compact’ or ‘Agreement’) under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988.

Nevada and Louisiana are the only two states where casino-style gambling is legal statewide. Both state and local governments impose licensing and zoning restrictions. All other states that allow casino-style gambling restrict it to small geographic areas (e.g., Atlantic City, New Jersey or Tunica, Mississippi), or to American Indian reservations, some of which are located in or near large cities. As sovereign nations, American Indian tribes have used legal protection to open casinos, which has been a contentious political issue in California and other states. In some states, casinos are restricted to “riverboats”, large multi-story barges that are, more often than not, permanently moored in a body of water.

In short, while there maybe a political change occurring in Hawaii, it has yet to manifest itself via a wholesale paradigm shift as applied to gaming. Again, probably the best opportunity to obtain gaming in Hawai’i is via native Hawaiiangs gaining federal recognition and signing a compact with the state.

If Hawaii considers gaming in Hawaii, allowing Native Hawaiians as benefactors, reducing the tax burden of residents, improving some of Hawaii’s challenges in areas of roadway improvements, education system improvements, infrastructure improvements, improving the standard of living for Hawaii”s residents and yes, even improving our challenges with budgetary shortfalls at UH athletics . . .
    are all compelling reasons.

Hawaii residents wouldn’t need to travel to Vegas to gamble, they would have the option of gambling in Hawaii.
Visitors to Hawaii would increase spending while here.

And those that are opposed to gambling, they can choose not to participate.

172…As with anything applied to a domestic sovereign, those are the exclusive domain for that “tribal nation” to decide. Next, it would then have to be negotiated with the state to delineate the parameters any potential gaming compact.

Now, with all that said, there are shelves of varying studies articulating either the financial benefits and/or social-ills of state approved gaming. A couple of things are clear: there are huge dollars involved (think, in the 9 and 10 figures); there is any impact to the greater society at large; and once that “dog it let out to play, you don’t corral him back in the yard.” All interesting and profound public policy issues to consider….

I guess the shoe fits…When you read the blog and post somewhere else that the information you got from the blog is b.s. and you personally say that the blog host doesn’t know what he’s talking about them yes that pretty much sounds like your talking trash…question is how’d you know that post was meant for you?

  175. wafan December 30, 2013 7:03 am

    Good morning!

Guud Morning Tsaikos around the world…another bootiful day in Hawaii nei!

  178. Fan December 30, 2013 7:37 am

167….Fei Jai….interesting comment…..I scrolled back through the posts today and could find very little of the phenomenon you are describing (the blog being apology central for Norm Chow)…..so your comment seems to be hallucinatory….I guess there is a difference between Tsaikos and psychos!

    175. Just admit it.. You’re a female… You try instigating things that aren’t any of your business. Did you tattle tail to your mom too??

If you want to hear the sugar coated version of everything and how great our 3 wins over 2 seasons are, then just don’t read my posts…

But to try instigating trouble and accuse of “talking crap” just shows you are a CHICK…

So if a player says they transfer because of distance from home but ends up going to a school over a 1,000 miles away from home, I’m the idiot for calling it out like it is…

  180. walter December 30, 2013 7:59 am

RE: 167, your posts are why the blog is becoming less and less “entertaining”. You don’t like the coach/staff. You don’t like the coach/staff. You don’t like the coach/staff. I get it.

    – season ticket(s) holder for a long time and just as frustrated as you.

  181. Former UH Athlete December 30, 2013 8:24 am

Anybody heard if Aaron Baltazar has landed a new team yet? The former Boise St RB left the team after Peterson left for Washington. He’s rehabbing a torn ACL, but I thought he was BSU’s most talented RB with a better burst than Ajayi before he went down.

I presume he may follow Peterson to Washington, but with a torn ACL, I think that knocks out a bunch of schools from pursuing him. Might be worth a phone call once the dead period is over and if he hasn’t re-committed elsewhere before then.

  182. NorthShoreFan December 30, 2013 8:38 am

    ditto dat….Amen….

#183. How do I know what you are saying is fact? I don’t know your credentials so how can I believe you? I agree that I wish everything that is posted is based on fact. But mover going to happen because everyone is entitled to their opinion. You just need to sort through the BS.

  185. jm2375 December 30, 2013 9:04 am

    Well said, NUHA, well said.

  186. wafan December 30, 2013 9:22 am

    Mr. A-House . . .

    Too soon.

    Tsigh.

  187. I STAY ALL NUHA ALREADY December 30, 2013 9:25 am

#186 – Pretty simple, “opinions” are oneÊ»s own, and I encourage all to have one, and well, voice them they want to.

Facts, well, you have a point in “credentials” etc, but at some point, you must, must, consider the sources.

All the non-sense seems to be written by the same people. All the facts seem to be written by the same people.

Sorting the B.S. is just as tiresome. My point is, why “litter” this blog with the B.S.?

Trust me, read former posts and see whoʻs been full of it! Itʻs pretty obvious my friend.

  188. kapakahi December 30, 2013 9:33 am

    #189,

ST knows that……”These are the facts of the case. And they are undisputed.”

  189. Bryson December 30, 2013 9:54 am

Haha wow someone’s panties are in a bunch gotta resort to calling name calling really…lol…and 1,000 miles away is alot less than the distance from VA to HI….but what do I know right Mr.High and Mighty…
