LB coach candidates: 199 and counting
There are 199 applicants for the Rainbow Warriors’ soon-to-be vacated linebacker coach’s job.
That number is expected to grow when HR personnel check the mailbox tomorrow.
Two weeks ago, Tony Tuioti was told he would not be retained as linebacker coach after his contract expires in March. This past Friday was the first day UH officials could review the applications. There probably was a delay in some deliveries because of Christmas. (We won’t mention the brown trucks.)

It’s pretty much a given that no OC will be hired, and that Jordan Wynn will probably be named full-time QB coach. Do you know if Chow will be hiring a full-time and experienced WR coach?

If Wynn is hired as the QB coach, that would make 4 full-time offensive position coaches (with OL – Naeole, TE – Rauscher, RB – Wiesehan), while the defense only has 3 full-time defensive position coaches (DL, LB, DB) so wouldn’t seem like the offense would be hiring another position coach for WR.

11 I thought demo doubles as the safeties coach. And since Wynn is also the “OC” it would make sense to hire a WR coach.

I think Demo initially worked with the safeties, but Daronte’ Jones handled all of the DBs for most of the past season.
My gut feeling is one of the new hires will work with most of the linebackers while the other will work with the ends/jokers.

It is a fair process if, say, you’re going to hire an administrative assistant for the American Studies department.
But athletics are different, obviously. Assistant coaches are union members, but they’re on one-year contracts. What I think is puzzling is when you have to go through the long vetting process to hire GAs. Take Richard Torres. He’s already been screened several times as a player; did he become a different person when applying for a GA spot?

If it’s because of multiple coaches then might be understandable. The requirement for a coaches position after being in the system for a while, not understandable.
I also think that people in the field should be on specific selection committees.
It’s impressive to run a bank, but how does that translate to hiring a head coach?
When they hire media relations staffers, they never have, say, a newspaper reporter on the committee. I mean, if you’re going to hire a chef, shouldn’t you have a fat person on the committee?

ST…selecting the head of a bank might get you $ if you follow the “buddy-buddy” relationships….but, it may not always be true
There’s another interesting rule. As I understand it, suppose you’re hired to be a paper shredder. Then you get moved to paper collator. Now suppose you’re a screwup as a collator. You can’t be fired. The only way you can be let go is if they move you back to your original position, paper shredder, then screw up there. I remember there was a guy who was hired for a position, then was moved to a second position, where he struggled. The original position was dissolved, so he could never move back there, thus he could never be fired. I can understand the thinking: It prevents people from punitively moving to a position in which they’ll fail. But, still …
Conversely, if you recruit a guy as a running back, then move him to linebacker, he really shouldn’t be faulted if he’s not very good at linebacker.

I mean, I wouldn’t even know where to begin to hire a diving coach.

Apparently doesn’t apply to Joey Iosefa……who was recruited to play DB (at 190 lbs)…..but outgrew the position and was instead auditioned at LB…..before being moved to RB.

Agree that UH should let the AD search for and hire the coaches he best deems the best candidate and fit. If it’s a bad hire, then the AD will be held accountable. UH seems to love committees. Don’t see the point of having a head of a bank or hospital decide on who the best coaching candidates will be for any sport. I guess, change comes slowly here.
Mitch Kaaialii was recruited as a tight end under Dick Tomey in 86. He was moved to OL when Bob Wagner took over and grew into an All-Conference tackle. Same with Theo Adams.

I think all head coaches should hire their own people who will work under them IF they pass a screening by whatever committee. We don’t want to hire, say, a child molester.
UH actually uses an investigative service to check out candidates.
That’s why it sometimes takes a while.
I would have hoped that we would have gotten a DC first and get his input on a defensive assistant coach. Not unusual for DC to coach linebackers. I think Aranda did that when he took over as our DC.

I don’t understand the hiring process. I don’t know why they couldn’t at least “review” the applications without contact. That way, they can weed out the no way in heck applicants like myself and other couch potato coaches. On the deadline date, they would have a few apps to review before starting the inquiry and interview process.
BTW, does Chow review all apps or does someone screen it for him? Hope he’s the one to review all.

There are all sorts, from high school through the NFL.
When there’s an opening, people automatically send out applications.
Regardless of what people think of UH, it is a Division I-A program, and there aren’t that many coaching jobs for the number of people who wish to be FBS coaches.

Old School Dave – #31 – Pacific is dropping men’s vb after this season, bringing the MPSF back down to 12 teams. Opens up 2 games for non-conference play. This year UH only had 4 non-conference games – the 3 Outrigger Tournament games, and I believe, one of next week’s games.

Coach Chow banned Ben Yee from standing with the team. He was told he had to stand with the other boosters or end zone. He made a decision to not attend anymore UH football games.
Ben is not the only one as other medical people were told to get out of the area. Not the way you treat people that have been faithful supporters to the program that have brought many $$$$ into the program for many years. I haven’t gone to the football banquet since they went luau format but they may have eliminated the Ben Yee Most Inspirational Player award.

I don’t like the idea of closing off sections for football, especially the yellow, which offers a pretty good view. Instead of trying to create a more intimate setting, UH should go the other way and try to fill those seats. That will take better promotions, a better experience, better scheduling (can’t go weeks between home games) and, of course, better performance on the field.
Not exactly sure what happened, but I think in an effort to whittle the number of people on the sideline, Ben Yee was inadvertently caught in the sweep.
That’s a fence that needs to be mended.
Ben has done a lot for the program, especially establishing and then carrying Na Koa, all as unpaid worker. (I’m not sure if Na Koa paid for his travel.) Plus, he’s a good guy.
Whatever the rift, Ben Yee needs to be back in the fold.
I don’t like cluttered sidelines, either, but what else does UH have to offer?
People can donate out of the goodness of their hearts (and some tax credits), but the bottom line is: What’s the value of being a supporter?
People need something in exchange besides a hat and shirt.
If it makes some boosters happy to give a little more in exchange for a game in the booth or two quarters on the field, what’s the harm?
I’d even go so far as let a couple of boosters on the team buses to the stadium. For a price, of course.
I like the formula Charlie Wade does with his boosters.
Before matches, he gives a little chat, explaining what to look for.
Sure, it’s different between football and men’s volleyball. Volleyball doesn’t have that many variety of schemes, other than changing rotations. But it does help fans connect better with the team.
One thing UH could do is invite season-ticket holders to watch football scrimmages. Then after that, the fans could have Q&A’s with the coaches.

Chow not only banned medical volunteers from the sidelines but he sent many of them letters stating their services were no longer needed. These were doctors who gave the team free services and free supplies which amounted to tens of thousands of dollars a year. This is why many of us were taken back when Ben Jay said he is considering closing the yellow section to save a few thousand.

I heard about Kwamane Bowens after the season, but they were hoping he’d change his mind. I think the distance is a problem.
Make a standard haka year in year out. Make it easy to learn, but meaningful. Then teach everybody, fans, cheerleaders and players to do it. Imagine a home game with EVERYBODY but the opposing team and their fans doing a pergame and maybe, a post game haka. Who needs Sweet Caroline when you have the haka? Just sayin… we ARE Polynesia’s team after all.

Happy New Year Tsaiko Nation, it has been a while but I have been busy here in LA just doing one thing “building connections”. The New Year for me will be uplifting and promising as I do have Hawaii in the fold on many opportunities in which IF they open their eyes and take care of the “small details” then success financially to the LWC, Hawaii athletic teams and bringing in new membership to UHAA is on the rise as “I am in it to win it” !
I have Dodgers, Lakers, Clippers, Hollywood Entertainment, American Idol (Care of Rich2176) and just a signature away securing Tiger Woods Academy of Orange County. 2014 is going to be HUGH as I have 5 Los Angeles High Schools locked up to recruit potential UH students as Palos Verdes H.S. and Beverly Hills H.S. are scheduled for the Month of February with myself becoming Jed Clampet as I reprise the role of “The Aloha Beverly Hillbilly” coming to recruit the rich and famous driving nothing but my 4 door European Coupe Hawaiian License plate Sedan. UH admissions has received my 662 interest cards from my LA recruiting efforts and working diligently following through to bring them on board as future UH students. Proud of the accomplishments with admission office rewarding me with a nice Christmas gift for my efforts.
It’s all good Tsaiko Nation as we will get better this coming 2014 as U of H is my #1 priority and I am the “LA pied piper” who has the magic flute with my main guy that I recently met living in San Pedro who is nothing but “Aloha Hawaii Admirer” !

Also heard UH is trying to help Allen Sampson transfer to James Madison after he graduates in May.
I’m pretty sure Sampson should get a couple of years because he missed nearly 2.5 seasons with really bad injuries. The torn hamstring, it could be argued, is a result of overcompensating following the knee injury. We’ll see. Another good guy. Wish him the best.
One thing is you can’t plan spontaneity.

Love what Charlie Wade is doing and trying to connect. But hard when your HC think its a waste of time to schmooze with boosters and fans. It’s no secret that he doesn’t want to speak on the radio after the games and will only do a minimal number of Call The Coach shows and immediately digs out without thanking the ones who came to the show. He will not talk to the Animals in the afternoons and can’t remember if he spoke to Bobby C. In the morning this year. My Associate asked Chow if he would speak to his Rotary group. Chow asked how much are you going to pay me? He said he doesn’t do it for free.
Booster and fan support will continue to decline. The Punahou Mafia are growing tired and Chows days are numbered. Next year could be his last without posting a winning seaso and strong finish to next years season.
When I was covering UH basketball, the coaches couldn’t wait for Midnight Ohana. The way they figured it, a new guy was vulnerable to wanting to leave anytime before the first practice. Of course, things have changed since then, with flexible rules that allow coaches to conduct conditioning drills earlier.
When you’re dealing with young people, many away from home for the first time, there are a lot of emotional factors involved. The first semester of college is a difficult adjustment for almost everybody. Whatever decision a player makes, the wish is he’ll pursue his education. And, as a parent, it would be awfully nice if a team or school is picking up the tuition and school expenses.

Never really liked basketball, but he was 7 feet, so he was pushed into it.
After he quit, he lost a bunch of weight and joined the Army.
If I’m not mistaken, one of Bowens’ family members died during the season. I think he went back for the funeral. It wasn’t an easy first semester for him. But, again, good guy, good student, good player.

Glad to see there’s more than enough choices. Just hope UH selects somebody how has a good network for recruiting. Maybe another former NFL player like Naeole would be good also. I think those guys can really coach up players if they have good teaching skills. Being a NFL vet will carry a lot of respect from the players they coach.
Maybe UH will be lucky enough to have a retired NFL-er with an education degree that applied.

MVB boosters also provide post-game meals and have post-game potlucks 3 times during the season. I know it’s hard to do for the 105-member football team, but how about allowing a few boosters to attend the post-game meals? It’s a chance to connect with the players and coaches. The boosters at the lower levels of membership should be able to participate, not just those at the upper levels.
91… Chase Daniels is a quality QB. Though he was way better than Gabbert when coming out of Mizzou. I think Daniels was unlucky that he came out before last years class of QBs. He’s got a decent arm, is very mobile, and accurate. He’s a guy that’s been buried on the depth chart because of his size and he’s been on teams with established QBs.
My cousin’s sons are Shane and Austin.

The medical thing is a dispute that doesn’t have anything to do with Chow. There are a lot of different issues happening on campus. It’s quite a sight.

A doctor friend of mine who gave years of service to the program received the letter that his services were no longer required. The running joke among the doctors is that Chow fired them from voluntary positions. Sad thing is Chow fired them before he met any of them.
Shane Austin, remember his family coming to the tailgate after the last game and he humbly stated, …. I shouldn’t have thrown that ball…..very humble and nice young man. I hope he is doing well and also his family. …was great to meet them. me thinks somebody got a pic of that day.
Thanks for the update on Ben Yee. I wondered what had happened to him. I missed seeing him on the sidelines and at the Na Koa weekly Luncheons.
It seems like a stab in the back for Ben Yee after he helped to found The Na Koa Football Club with Bob Wagner.
Seems that financial challenges are at the root of the problems at UH. From restricting selection of qualified coaches to recruiting budgets, to paying teachers within the DOE.
Why not allow DHHL to build casinos on their lands in Hawaii and tax a portion of the revenue for education, which would include UH athletics?
With the amount of visitors visiting already coming to Hawaii and providing Hawaii residents another option to keep their money in Hawaii instead of going to Vegas, we could solve many of our budget woes.

I’m glad someone finally mentioned the Ben Yee thing. I was floored when I heard what happened with him last year. What kind of head coach kicks the president emeritus of your booster club off the sidelines? If you are going to change things for the sake of change, you better be able to back it up with some wins… but so far, Chow hasn’t been able to do that. If we are gonna win only one game, we may as well open up the sidelines for folks who raise a lot of money for the program.

Thanks for the update about Ben Yee one of major boosters no longer supporting the program,this is really unfortunate, Chow is oblivious and arrogant . Yee has been with the program forever it seems , also remember seeing him at men’s basketball games where he had front lower level seats near the bench. Sorry also to hear about the medical professionals who donate their time and own money getting miffed by the new medical doc for UH sports. Even my chiropractor Joe Cardenalli got the shaft f, used to donate his time to the football team before every game to adjust as many backs as he could for the boys.Pake Ben Jay needs to smooth over a lot of burnt bridges brought on by or with the Chow rejime. Sounds more like the Kim Jun Un rejime!!
Norm Chow is sinking this ship faster than I could have ever imagined…. I’ve never seen a coach lose his locker room like NC has… Not that I approve of Mack as a coach but the players all respected him at the very least. We can recruit all these players all we want but if we can’t win them over and take care of them while they are here, this program isn’t going anywhere…
It actually was an administrative guy who booted Yee.
It was a mistake. I don’t think Yee was one of the guys who was supposed to be booted. I also think it was a last-straw deal for Yee. It didn’t seem he was too happy with the direction things were going in the years leading to that incident.
I think the doctor people were referring to was the eye guy, right? Dr. Ronn Reynolds?
The team doctor and the surgeons remained the same, as far as I know.
The coaches don’t hire (or fire) medical people. That’s a different level.
So, I decided instead of reading these comments, I’ll just pick up the phone and call Ben Yee. (Disclosure: We’ve known each other for about 35 years.)
Ben said there’s no feud or hurt feelings with Chow.
He said he’s just fed up with the “system” and the accompanying bureaucracy that hinders even the most basic fund-raising efforts.
But he said he is now stress free, and his blood pressure went from 130/90 to 120/68.
He also dislikes the idea of lowering the number of available seats at the stadium.
And that’s the story.
Its so funny when I see a certain poster post here and act nice then goes to another board and post crap about Stephen not knowing what he’s talking about…all I can say is this know it all guru should man up
I wonder if blaming would be so rampart if the team was winning? Losing is not fun, granted but it may be best to know before affixing blame.
ST appears to have great insight and I tend to believe he knows much more than what he releases. Understandable, given that I would tend to believe some things are said in confidence.

I predicted that this would be a long off-season, after going 1-11. It goes without saying that you’re not going to have many happy people. I’m sure there will be some more players transferring out. Spring practice can’t begin soon enough. Bottom line is that Chow has got to win in 2014. No more excuses. It’s do or die time.
I should have spoken to Ben Yee earlier, but — and this is kind of embarrassing — I didn’t really know he was missing.

if benny goes, hey, ben jay had better sit norm down and tell him…wins and losses are one thing, but being able to keep things tight and not have them unravel is another. i can accept give norm at least 3 years to see how his recruits develop. but if his star LOCAL recruits bail and his management style just is not a healthy one, then ben jay needs to factor that in, perhaps above wins and losses.
although, admittedly i’m not in the locker and practices and around the team. i don’t know what exactly chow was responsible for and what he was not responsible for.
it seems to me chow will pick up noga. although, as some as mentioned, i would think most leaders would rather build their staff then inherit one.
saddened by these assumptions. all these things further point to losing men’s sports and a few women’s in order to keep football afloat….much like Temple. i think we gonna be D2 soon. chow in my limited opinion needs to become a manager, not a dictator…to me, he just does not seem like a leader. but that’s ok, not all managers are leaders, not all leaders can manage. please get the coaches in place and get to work as soon as possible, and please, do not lose benny. losing benny may mean the tide on the north shore is all going out.

Two things I’ve come to realize since I’ve become an old fart:
• I don’t like to see people lose their jobs. They had to go, but I still felt badly for Frank Arnold, Fred vonAppen and Herman Frazier. These are people’s livelihood You have to feel, at least a little, for them.
• I have empathy for players. Being honest doesn’t mean having to reveal all the warts. For instance, there was a player who just wasn’t very smart. He kept making mistakes. You are what you are, and some people lack physical ability, some lack mental ability. There’s no need to embarrass someone for natural deficiencies.
And I actually do that here. There are some people who are a little bit off, but, hey, if it makes someone feel better to blow off steam or vent or feel informative, what’s the harm? There’s enough room for everybody.
Oh Oh! All of a sudden everyone is wondering if they are the one that is “a little bit off”!!!!
“kapakahi” already says that I’m a “bit off”.
But then again ST already knew this……since we go back……to our HS glory days.
There are a lot of factors that affect the temperature of the blog.
If the Cowboys lose, there’s a morose feel. I’ve noticed Cowboys fans tend to become depressed rather than angry.

Conceivable that the next DC may also be in charge of the linebackers, too. I would also assume that all spots would up for grabs at that position with a new coach coming in.
I keep telling myself to stay positve. Don’t let my dissatifaction with the Chow regime consume me. Got to believe in the young men who represent us on the field will turn things around. Got to believe the players will take it into their own hands to get better individually and as a team.
Got to believe that seniors to be like Yap, Samia,Jener, Harding, Iosefa and Graham step up and lead the underclassmen from now till fall camp. That they’ll keep the team together in the off season working on their conditioning and skill improvement.
Got to keep believing the players will succeed in turning things around not matter who is coaching them.
Very sad about Ben Yee. Coach Chow needs to learn to treat people right. Call Bobby Curren, talk to Stephen Tsai, the Sports Animals, Ferd Lewis and even Skinny Dave Readon. Norm Chow has been on the mainland too long, he forgot the aloha sprit.

Since Hawaii has no pro team, I never was a “true” fan of any mainland team. I’m more of a fan of individual pro players. I did however like the 90s Braves while watching them on TBS while cutting school, the 90 Bulls and the 90s Niners. Hmm maybe I’m just an old fut.

Senator Inoye is no longer with us, and so is his senior ability to bring back to Hawaii federal funded projects.
If we are able to bring same sex marriage to the table in special session, perhaps we can also consider gaming as a potential solution to help bridge some of our financial challenges in Hawaii. Repairing and maintaining our infrastructure, improving on our current education system, adressing our high cost of living . . . increasing taxes on Hawaii residents is not the solution.
I don’t see the problem with a lottery. Use the proceeds to fund DOE and UH. Don’t want a lottery? Then don’t play. I lived in the DC area for over 7 years and bought lottery tickets ONCE as a gift for my future mother-in-law.
Don’t be too concerned over guys transferring out. Especially if it’s a guy who hasn’t contributed significant playing time. It happens at every program every year. There’s about 100 players on a roster each year…. it’s impossible to satisfy everybody. Besides, it’s not like UH hasn’t benefited from players leaving previous programs under less than perfect terms.
You should be concerned if a full time starter or primary backup wants to transfer out.
Fonua has a chance to earn a starting spot vs a few other guys with little experience, so he’s definitely missing out on his opportunity to shine if he does in fact leave. If he leaves, he’s going to be at the bottom of the depth chart and have to earn his way up wherever he goes unless it’s to a lower division.
159… I just checked the CA Lottery website and the lottery has generated $1.3 billion towards the DOE, marking the thirteenth straight year the lotto has generated $1 billion+ to the state DOE.
I know Hawaii’s smaller population would only produce a small fraction of the CA lotto proceeds but if Hawaii only pulls in 10% of California’s lotto sales, using the same revenue split, that’s $130 million.

Fact: Benny Fonua had his chances. Was too slow, put on bad weight (in my opinion), played pretty much all season on special teams but was rarely in on the tackle. He wants out? I say let him. This has nothing to do with Chow living up to promises. What does he want? Play every down and get embarrased because he can’t hold his own? Hey, I could be wrong, but I have attended every home game and watched virtually every away game for the past 30 years. I want the local kids to shine too, but no can help if he no help himself.
Attended initial Na Koa meeting with Norm Chow as speaker. He essentially blew off the membership, obviously unprepared to speak. Never attended another Na Koa meeting.

Hawaii residents wouldn’t need to travel to Vegas to gamble, they would have the option of gambling in Hawaii.
Visitors to Hawaii would increase spending while here.
And those that are opposed to gambling, they can choose not to participate.

Anybody heard if Aaron Baltazar has landed a new team yet? The former Boise St RB left the team after Peterson left for Washington. He’s rehabbing a torn ACL, but I thought he was BSU’s most talented RB with a better burst than Ajayi before he went down.
I presume he may follow Peterson to Washington, but with a torn ACL, I think that knocks out a bunch of schools from pursuing him. Might be worth a phone call once the dead period is over and if he hasn’t re-committed elsewhere before then.
