Law is the flaw

There’s an old saying that if you can’t enforce a law, delegalize it.

The NCAA can’t police its recruiting restrictions. The answer, according to a proposal, would be to lift the restrictions. That would mean unlimited texts to prospects, daily brochures and all-out visits.

What does this have to do with UH?

Texts won’t be a concern because everybody has an unlimited texting plan. But Hawaii’s isolation and UH’s budget will put the Warriors at a competitive disadvantage. The current rules restrict a head coach to one home visit per prospect and allow a school to send out a maximum seven coaches on the road. Printed media guides, which were used as recruiting brochures, were eliminated because they were used as recruiting tools. Oh, and also because schools were encouraged to go trees. If the proposals are approved, media guides will be back in play and trees will be dying.

    Go Warriors!

    Go UH!

interesting, NFL referee Jim Daopoulos says defensive holding should have been called on the Crabtree play at the end of the game. He also states the officials missed another major penalty when a ravens player “touched” an official.

He told me to call him after the Super Bowl.

I sent him a text at halftime: Two more hours.

And then the power outage . . .

Power outage happened, first thought terrorism. Five very scary first minutes. I think NFL handled the situation great. Then we wondered if they blew the fuse with the Beyonce half time show. Even producer trucks were down from what we heard from our friends there working. Scary first five minutes not knowing. Could have been a real disaster if they were not able to get the lights back on. Ugh.

Getting Aofaga Wily is Huge for the Warriors! He was really, really high on my list. And thats is one pretty stacked back field, Iosefa, Gregory (Hopefully), Lister, Lakalaka, Diocemy St Juste and now Aofaga Wily! Chow just might be setting up a USC, Reggie Bush and Lendale White type back field. Thunder and Lighting, I think it’s time to move Isoefa to FB with Lister and Vele (Thunder). (Lighting) should be Gregory (Hopefully), Lakalaka, Diocemy and Wily. Whew! That is some serious talent right there. Go Warriors!

  13. kapakahi February 4, 2013 8:35 am

Now gotta try somehow get the other North Shore athletes (Mohetau, Paselio, Thompson) to UH too. Possible invited walk-ons?

    15. To me David Fangupo would be my top Walk On candidate. I am a big fan of rugby players and looks like he can be a big time fullback, DT, OG. Waipahu LB probably nice candidate too but sounds more like a JC guy to bring grades up.

  19. A-House February 4, 2013 8:51 am

    gobows:

the “touch” you mentioned was actually a 2-hand shove to the official’s chest and he moved about 2′ backwards – yes he was near the players, but the official could not feel the “touch”?

replay showed it was #29 of the Ravens

now, how can the “officials miss” this so called touch?

also, Crabtree was mugged along the sideline with the defender’s hand wrapped around his face and the defender’s back to the ball – yet, they saw it as a good defensive play

the NFL should be embarrassed with the “officiating” at the Super Bowl – if this is their finest, then the regular season games will be hell!

also, the officials allowed the players to “push each other around” while trying to separate the conbatants – only flag thrown for the “fights” was so obscene

  20. AlaWai February 4, 2013 9:10 am

Is it within the NCAA rules to give recruits a media guide in flash drive form. The flash guide could also contain videos of games, messages from coaches and players, celebrities and other significant people. It can be customized to each recruit. There is no better recruiting tool than videos of our beautiful state and its people. Give the Flash Drive on a Warrior Key Chain and in a nice box. Much better than a bulky media guide that will end up in a pile of others.

  21. jiminy cricket February 4, 2013 9:14 am

After the 5 yard zone where you can push and shove, it is really hard to determine what is NFL pass interference (other than the obvious kind), after the 5 yards. the players always have their hands on each other and sometimes they call it and sometimes they don’t. Crabtree may have gotten his jersey pulled, but did you see him push the defender’s helmet down so hard the defender fell down? Could have been called double penalty with 49ers getting the ball on 4th down again.

It’s like the NBA; figuring out what a foul is (other than the obvious kind) is impossible. A guy gets hacked and they don’t call a foul, and then a guy touches him with his fingers and they call a foul.

  23. Hilo-Warrior February 4, 2013 9:15 am

Everyone can keep calling it on one play. The game was not decided on one play. They called the game evenly on both sides. I recorded the game and the 49ers held just as much as the ravens did.

Like it was said by the announcers. This is the championship game its time to play through everything and win a championship.

  24. jm2375 February 4, 2013 9:16 am

  25. lowtone123 February 4, 2013 9:29 am

The Super Bowl was as expected in that it was close at the end of the game. It wasn’t won or lost on one play. I would point to the kickoff return by Jacoby Jones and the fumble by LaMichael James. The Niners probably scores a TD if James didn’t fumble the ball away and could have kept the momentum on their side.

  27. kev-1 February 4, 2013 9:51 am

    A-House #19,

Not to mention the flagrant hold during the safety play when the kicker was running around the endzone. One of the Ravens was literally hugging a Niner from behind, preventing him from chasing down the kicker.

I don’t want to complain about calls, but IMO that hold on Crabtree may very well have prevented the go ahead TD. Call it sour grapes, but watch the play again.

And the hold on the safety helped take much more time off the clock, denying at least one last play after the punt return, which may have amounted to nothing.

  28. Dan-O February 4, 2013 10:03 am

    #27

Much like the NBA Finals, you not gonna get a call on a last second, game deciding play.

It would have been interesting if Crabtree felt the hold, and fell down! I think he fighting thru the hold, made it a no-call.

As for the holding, doesnt matter. The time does not get put back on the clock. Holding in the endzone is a safety anyway. Good coaching would have told the Ravens players TO hold…so that more time would run off the clock.

  33. Hilo-Warrior February 4, 2013 10:27 am

on the hold during the play for the safety. If I am not mistaken a hold in the endzone is also a safety. So regardless that time on the clock was still going to be taken off. And the niners didn’t show the ability to score big down field against the baltimore defense.

Note: I am not a fan of either team so I call it like its seen.

  34. Bryson February 4, 2013 10:35 am

Why are Niners fans acting like the game was fixed…The refs missed calls on both sides not just one…The way they played throughout the playoffs they were do for a loss eventually the slow starts don’t help and when your defensive secondary is suspect then your gonna have an even harder time winning against a very balanced team like the Ravens…

So much controversy in yesterday’s Super Bowl. Can we agree that non-calls were made on both teams and not as one-sided as some fans tend to believe. It’s just that the last controversy was on SF’s 4th down play.

Great game after the lights came back on.

Why are Niners fans acting like the game was fixed . . .

Oh, why, because for an NFL to win fair and square, theyy have to be a “darling” of the NFL (i.e., fans boo-hoo’g the day after and sports talking heads being biased on these “sweety”/darling teams) complete with played out logos from the 1970s, yes, SF, Green Bay (and yes, if the touchdown on that last day of replacement ref’ game between them and the Seahawks was made by the Packers instead of Seattle, that play — yes, yes — would NOT have been labeled “controversial) . . . all those other teams who thought they were deserving of a trip to the Superbowl, just because their “name” honeyboy celeb’ QBs.

They can keep crying. Baltimore won the Superbowl outright, nothing’s gonna change that, SF LOSERS, SF (yawn) had plenny chances to do well, and, oh, Ravens’ QB Flacco get to basically write his own contract now. Ray Lewis leaves very much a champion, hall of fame not in doubt.

Kaepernick get plenny time play with his turtle, though.

  55. Derek February 4, 2013 12:09 pm

When was the last time Hawaii had 2 4 star players in the ESPN 300 top players, and also 7 others 3 star players? Never. Let me list them.

    4* players:

    1) Aaron Zwahlen, QB ESPN #155

    2) Kennedy Tulimasealii, DT ESPN #187

    3* players:

    1) Tigi Hill, OLB

    2) Charles Tuaau, DE

    3) Aofaga Wily, RB

    4) Elijah Tupai, OG

    5) Jasquez Haynes, WR

    6) Julian Gener, LB

    7) Ammon Barker, WR

Also, highly regarded players like Keith Kirkwood, Terrance Polk, John Waa, Trayvon Henderson, Drake Miller, Barry Higdon, etc. And, like Jeezy says one of the two most athletic players on board, Keelan Ewaliko and Diocemy St Juste. When it is all said and done, 2* player St. Juste might be the best of them all. He is just electric with jets. Scouts have very underrated him for sure. Chow and coaches just need to finish the last piece of the puzzles to cap the 2013 class. Isaac is still out there, Hautau, McCollum, Thomas, preferred walk-ons, ? at punter, we supposedly got a long snapper. Should be the 2nd best recruiting class in the Mountain West Conference behind Boise St.

  56. kev-1 February 4, 2013 12:09 pm

  58. kev-1 February 4, 2013 12:15 pm

Did the Ravens play better? YES

Did the Niners miss opportunities? YES

Did Flacco out play Kap? YES

    Did Flacco deserve MVP? YES

Did the better team win? YES

Was there pass interference and holding at the end of the game on a crucial drive that negatively affected the Niners scoring drive? YES

They’re called facts. To some it is considered whining. And yes, I would love some cheese. I like cheese.

  59. fshnpoi February 4, 2013 12:19 pm

they both could have been called for holding, but since the ball was in the air, it would have been pass interference..didn’t crabtree push off? that wasn’t called either.

  60. kev-1 February 4, 2013 12:24 pm

And YES. There were absolutely missed calls against both sides. Not a clean game officiating either way. Though some of you may not believe me, no sour grapes here. The Ravens smashed the Niners early. A come back win would have been spectacular. Not the Ravens fault. Congrats to them.

But I’d still like that cheese though.

  61. Bowwar February 4, 2013 12:25 pm

With Lister possibly not returniing to play along with Gregory, the new recruits along with Lakalaka will be expected to step-up immediately. Iosefa should stay at fullback, as his ball control is a liability.

  68. Dan-O February 4, 2013 12:45 pm

The key to the Florida kids is to NOT redshirt them, giving them playing time their freshmen year.

When the kids are playing (and traveling with team), less chance for homesickness. I think the Pearman kid would have stuck it out a few years ago, if we didnt redshirt him.

Of course, with our lack of talent….its kind of a no-brainer.

  69. Bowwar February 4, 2013 12:59 pm

I agree with Dan-O…I think you have to give the Freshmen exposure their first year IF they are from far away. As indicated, it will negate the “homesickness” deal and get a good assessment of what they can do…

It’s too bad we lost some pretty good young players who transferred out…Amadi could have actually been our punter this year.

  70. jeezy33 February 4, 2013 1:13 pm

    69. Key is still recruiting quality guys from Florida. Those Freshmen played because they are good. Doesn’t mean every Florida guy we get are gonna be like Marrell and Nequan tho

  71. kev-1 February 4, 2013 1:30 pm

Agree about the players from freshmen. I’m not sure if it was just out of necessity, but the ones that earned time last year were ready for it. That should pay dividends this year.

  72. kev-1 February 4, 2013 1:30 pm

I meant to say freshmen from Florida, not from freshmen.

  73. WarriorNY February 4, 2013 1:37 pm

    Hey all,

I’m extremely happy with this years class… Just curious, is St. Juste’s highlight video slightly sped up? The frame rate doesn’t seem right… (or maybe he’s just that fast)

Does anyone else feel that Feb 6 will like Christmas morning???

  74. Whats up February 4, 2013 1:38 pm

If Simeon Thomas and/or Troy McCollum I predict they should be either be starting or in the rotation freshman year. These 2 young men are talented!

  76. NotNasti February 4, 2013 1:57 pm

WarriorNY: Agreed, St. Juste’s video was sped up. IDK why there was a need to speed it up though, because he’s outrunning everyone in the video.

My question is this: If he is THAT good, how come he’s not highly rated?

  77. iwonderwhytheyhateme February 4, 2013 2:01 pm

How do we get the best recruiting class in the MWC? I want us to beat Boise at something before the season begins.

  78. wafan February 4, 2013 2:04 pm

UH vs NAU in the Bracket Buster game.

    Is that Slugger’s NAU Lumberjacks?

  79. jeezy33 February 4, 2013 2:04 pm

    76. Most of ratings are compiled by guys who perform well at camps before the senior year even starts. I don’t think St Juste made any camp appearances. Kennedy Tulimasealii also wasn’t highly rated until he was a late addition to the all american game and performed well.

“‘For him to be available, he must be five-six,’” Drinkwater recalled Chow saying. “‘If you’re telling me he’s five-nine, I’ll take your word for it, and we’re going to offer him.’”

After that mid-November conversation, the word spread about Saint Juste, a 5-foot-9, 185-pound senior. Though he attended no major summer combines and is a relative unknown to recruiting sites, he has made Santaluces a busy place in the last month.

To top that, I don’t think he even played his whole senior season out. Every year, good sleepers fall through th cracks.

  80. maddog50 February 4, 2013 2:06 pm

Take a look at the refs when you watch film…..you will see it is hard to doctor a film—-

  81. jeezy33 February 4, 2013 2:07 pm

Ath Eddie Jackson and RB Kani Benoit same way. No one knew of them going into senior year. Now Jackson is going to Alabama and Benoit who was committed to South Dakota St is going to Oregon.

Don’t be shocked to see a bunch of schools trying to get St Juste to change his mind.

I hope St. Juste stays with his commitment…You can’t teach speed. Also, what is the progress (health wise) of our kid from Florida who was a wide receiver, but suffered a knee injury. Is he coming back? He was supposed to be fast, but had a hard time gaining weight/muscle.

  87. Coach Law February 4, 2013 3:32 pm

Although we may agree or disagree with some laws, rules and regulations, they are put in place for a reason. Without them there would be no regulations. If you get caught, well we all know the outcome of that. Enforcing it would be up to an individuals honesty to come clean sooner, rather then later. The law is the law and if some of us think there’s a flaw, there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Because to them, it makes perfect sense and nothing will change unless they feel its appropriate.

  88. Slugger February 4, 2013 3:35 pm

Sad day for the Titan family. Got my grad degree from there.

Shocking that this would occur in Irvine….nearby the UCI campus. Irvine in South OC….considered one of the safest areas in the OC.

  99. al February 4, 2013 5:05 pm

    Aloha

  100. tom mui February 4, 2013 5:06 pm

  104. Chicken Grease February 4, 2013 5:26 pm

    Hooo hooo tom mui . . . finesse with that # 100. Congratulations. 😀

  105. Kevin February 4, 2013 5:34 pm

It appears that there is a rally of some sort at Hemenway Hall on campus. “Warrior Tie Dye”.

New AD Ben Jay on hand to tweet some photos with the Rainbow Warrior hoopsters on hand to help hype this Thursday’s game.

Mr. Jay may not be “popular” with some… “folk” on this blog for “obvious” reasons, but his enthusiasm and presence at UH games and athletic events is undeniable.

  106. al February 4, 2013 5:45 pm

    tommui…hmmmph.

  107. laulau head February 4, 2013 5:50 pm

McCollum tweet look like he’s favoring Marshall? George Rushing likes the school too

  108. Bryson February 4, 2013 5:55 pm

Hate to say it but I think McCollum and Thomas end up with Debo Williams at LLU….Hope I’m Wrong though

  109. al February 4, 2013 6:07 pm

do they still have an offer?

  110. kapakahi February 4, 2013 6:28 pm

    WR Rushing is ’14.

  111. Chicken Grease February 4, 2013 6:35 pm

    111. Can’t go wrong w/THAT #. 😀

  112. kapakahi February 4, 2013 6:40 pm

Interesting how BYU is spinning Faga’s commitment to UH…..

Just hoping that ’14 TE/DE Lamone Williams is reading this stuff too.

  113. kapakahi February 4, 2013 6:44 pm

Hopefully Pita is reading this stuff coming from BYU too.

  114. laulau head February 4, 2013 6:44 pm

North Miami’s Troy McCollum, No. 16 overall in Dade, is considering either Hawaii or Louisiana-Lafayette among his final choices. Carol City’s Simeon Thomas (No. 20) is choosing between Syracuse and FIU.

  115. Old School Dave February 4, 2013 6:54 pm

Kona Schwenke all over again with the BYU coaches. Let the badmouthing of Hawaii prep players begin. BYU had better be careful and not burn those bridges again.

  116. A-joe February 4, 2013 7:01 pm

  117. PowderPuff February 4, 2013 7:14 pm

So excited for Wednesday! Also going to the Nā Koa NLI Signing Day Reception at The Willows – that should be fun. Over the weekend, saw Dory at the MVB game and she said she’s been busy putting together the video profiles of the potentials.

  118. PolyMom February 4, 2013 7:14 pm

Wow! Just got a phone call. Warrior Football players making the Deans List. Get um in the classroom to!

  119. PowderPuff February 4, 2013 7:15 pm

A-joe….we miss your loudness at the MVB games. Okay, I think Stretch misses his co-conversationalist. I don’t converse, I just yell. 🙂

  120. Chicken Grease February 4, 2013 7:38 pm

Thanks for that info’, PolyMom! UH smaht school for sure! Known research establishment, mmmm hmmm.

    Don’t underestimate a U of Hawaii. 🙂

  121. jm2375 (iPad) February 4, 2013 7:58 pm

PP – one of Jeff Hall’s friends was channeling both conversationalists on Saturday night. Too bad no more visuals. 🙄 😆

  122. PurpleMaple February 4, 2013 8:09 pm

Wily is a great get, but not to forget Lakalaka. I thought he was impressive in last year’s fall camp. No other running back made the same impact sound when hitting the line as Lakalaka, not even Joey. If Will Gregory remains a Warrior, then the running back position should be one of the strengths of the offense. Can’t wait to see how it all turns out.

  123. kapakahi February 4, 2013 8:19 pm

While has great hands catching the ball out of the backfield, JMHO that Lakalaka needs to work on the same thing that Joey has to keep working on…..not fumbling when running the rock. That’s one problem that Wily doesn’t have.

  124. Chicken Grease February 4, 2013 8:24 pm

    Despite today’s tragedy . . . there was justice done today . . . from SA:

    Alabama stand-off ends; child safe

By Kate Brumback and Tamara Lush

    Associated Press

    POSTED: 12:26 p.m. HST, Feb 04, 2013

MIDLAND CITY, Ala. » Authorities stormed an underground bunker in Alabama today, freeing a 5-year-old boy who had been held hostage for nearly a week in the tiny underground shelter and leaving the boy’s abductor dead.

Aloha means a permanent goodbye in this case. Bless the boy and the public safety responders in this situation.

  125. kev-1 February 4, 2013 8:25 pm

Yes. A piece of good news. I hope that boy will be okay.

OT Jerry Saena to SMU over Hawaii

  127. kapakahi February 4, 2013 9:01 pm

Couldn’t pass up the offer…..considering SMU was his only OV.

  128. kapakahi February 4, 2013 9:25 pm

Wonder if UH was ever in on this Utah kid…..Tupai’s teammate at Cottonwood HS…..who looks to be in a similar situation that Ammon Barker was in…..when TE Coach left UCLA to become QB Coach at U-Dub…..and who now seems to want to leave the State of Utah….or go on his LDS mission first….

  130. Jeezy33 February 4, 2013 9:31 pm

128.. Wouldn’t hurt to email coaches… I know there is available scholarships ..

  131. PurpleMaple February 4, 2013 10:03 pm

Available scholarships? Hard to imagine. Anyway, UH coaches scored a large number of commits. Maybe largest in history without any additional till signing day. How many and which ones actually end up on campus for fall practice will be interesting.

  132. dannyp February 4, 2013 10:16 pm

    129

    I wasn’t complaining. I was being sarcastic.

  133. Leahi2 February 4, 2013 10:37 pm

    We need more DTs.

  134. Chicken Grease February 4, 2013 11:32 pm

Man, what is it with Alicia Keys? How can someone who cannot sing and be so boring be so popular and top pop hits? Watched her singing of the national anthem ’bout 5 times already and . . . mercy, HOW is this good?

Jennifer Hudson, with that MA. school choir . . . THAT should’ve been the national anthem performance.

  135. Chicken Grease February 4, 2013 11:51 pm

Heh. Even a Grease laughed at this [paraphrasing]:

“Ray Lewis didn’t do it, but he was there when the lights were cut.”

Thank you for sharing with us some of the info.

  139. ai-eee-soos February 5, 2013 1:06 am

from the SA front page …

The Hawaii football team capped one of its best recruiting classes in recent years with a commitment from a highly regarded linebacker.

Darzil Washington, who signed with Texas A&M two years ago, has decided to play for the Warriors in 2013. He will sign a letter of intent Wednesday, the first day recruits may put their commitments in writing.

  140. ai-eee-soos February 5, 2013 1:09 am

    # 139 was from the sports page, that is.

  141. clyde February 5, 2013 1:15 am

Ouch! No, Charlie Tua’au. Too bad it didn’t work out.

  144. al February 5, 2013 1:26 am

no pita, keti, and moala, too.

oh well, one door closes and another one opens.

too bad that two of the spring transfers didn’t get it done. that would have allowed two more to come into this class.

  145. Polskie zarobki February 5, 2013 1:29 am

Its a Nice Blog. I found it on Aol. I will be back here sometime.

does washington make it surprise #2 with aofaga wily #1?

i know many never believed tsai that wily would commit to the home team.

  150. kruzen February 5, 2013 1:44 am

  151. wafan February 5, 2013 3:08 am

    Good Tuesday!

  152. Braddah Moki February 5, 2013 4:16 am

Dem turkeys bettah get some D-linemans befoa we end up like last yeah. Broke an short handed. Linebackaz an konaz ain’t gonnah do no defense good if de no moa da core interior line of defence. Same ting fo da offense.

  153. 310Dude February 5, 2013 4:55 am

Whoa! D-line looking thin..no Tua’au and Moala yikes that hurts. We need some BIG surprises tomorrow.

  154. PurpleMaple February 5, 2013 5:09 am

Fortunately Calen Friel and Moses Samia are expected back from season ending injuries. They need to stay healthy. And since David Moala apparently has decided to sign with Arizona St., I agree the DT/NT position will be once thin, even with the development of Mike Andrade and Hunter Thompson, along with returning starter Siasau Matagiesi. Has Ofa Hautau committed yet? Maybe Chow and Co. might surprise us.

  155. HawaiiMongoose February 5, 2013 5:23 am

Hard to believe we failed to shore up the weakest part of the team…

  156. Slugger February 5, 2013 5:38 am

    Good morning!

SJ-macro & myki, lost my phone contacts. Need you to call if we are meeting for lunch. Mahaloz.

    Now back to regalah programming…

    GO BOWS!

    GO WARRIORS!

  157. jeezy33 February 5, 2013 6:03 am

Al, why does the SA article have Moala expected to sign?

  158. Buffoman February 5, 2013 6:09 am

So, what will happen to C. Tuaau? Where will he be playing? Was it his struggle with making the grade or did he have a better offer?

I am okay with the defense. Yes, it would have been nice to have gotten a really stout DT to go with KT but hey getting KT and the returnees should be fine. Next year we’ll have to go harder to secure a few more.

  159. HawaiiMongoose February 5, 2013 6:09 am

I really hope Moala hasn’t reneged. We need his size and experience at DT.

  160. jeezy33 February 5, 2013 6:19 am

With 3 scholarships available, Hawaii would be very smart to make a push on Torry Mctyer. He is the son of former BYU DB Tim Mctyer. Chow should have a connection there. Berkeley dropped his offer very late in the game and is down to BYU and UNLV

  161. Chicken Grease February 5, 2013 6:59 am

ai-eee-soos, al, kruzen, wafan, Braddah Moki, 310Dude, PurpleMaker, HawaiiMongoose, Slugger, jeezy33, Buffoman . . . and Mr. Stephen Tsai . . . good morning!
