We caught the red-eye, and we’re groggy, which got me thinking:
• Wouldn’t it be great if they renamed this state as “Baby”?
• It was pretty funny that the car-rental guy couldn’t find the GPS device.

Back to football. Wide receiver Keith Kirkwood did not make the trip because of concussion issues. Just another reason why Billy Ray Stutzmann is expected to start.

“The Oracle Student-Athlete Advancement Center at UH Manoa” sounds good to me!
I’ve written before that I dreamed of UH having a multi floor complex that can accommodate UH’s 400+ student-athletes in an organized fashion. This would be UH Athletic’s “crown jewel” and a real show off to visiting recruits and good publicity.
Again..
A multi level complex on the land that Klum Gym and the Na Koa and UH Letterwinners portables occupies is the place to do it.
1st floor – strength and conditioning (weights and cardio equipment) with male and female locker and shower rooms. Lockers don’t have to be large, just big enough to fit a SA’s bags or extra clothes as the assigned lockers for others sports are located in their respective and current locker rooms in the existing athletic complex.
2nd floor – expanded rehab facility and offices for UH training staff and medical personnel.
3rd floor – student-athlete academic and media center to replace the Nagatani Academic Center (they can still name the floor after him). In addition to that a media area can be set up to access and help update UH’s social media accounts and to even help SA’s produce their own interview segments for the UH website to help give them real world experience in sports media.
4th floor – Student-athlete cafeteria staffed with a team of nutritionists to help guide all SAs to healthier and more beneficial eating habits.
Oh and the displaced Na Koa offices and UH Letterwinners Club can move into where the Alex Waterhouse Weight Room is now and the old area where the Nagatani Academic Center is.
I imagine both entities wouldn’t mind residing in an actual permanent structure.

Just heard some comments by a UH player, believe it was B. Yap, speaking to the sports person of a TV station. He stated that they need to regroup and play harder and focus, as he stated that some of the defensive players did not appear to give it their all; they appeared to “take it easy” on certain plays for whatever reason. Yet, coach chow claims that he loves the team because they give it their “all”. Can anyone explain the reason for this discrepancy? Is this happening on the offense too?

If UH comes out in a 3-8 defensive set again, you can chalk up another 35 point loss. With no rushing defense and no pass rush expect UNLV to amass 200+ yards rushing and 350+ yards passing.
UH keeps doing the same thing and expect a different result. (Disillusioned?) Coaches will continue to blame the players but the truth of the matter is that this is not the NFL (where you can go with 3 All-Pro linemen on defense).
Listen to the UH coaches (Caumeyer especially) after this blowout.
#35 I must have missed that one. Don’t recall the coaches blaming players for the reason the team lost. It sounds as though this has been a regular event, “coaches will continue to blame..”. When did this pattern of coaches blaming players start.

In hindsight, what if Chow had groomed Woolsey as the starter from Spring ball. What if Chow had given Woolsey the same opportunity to succeed as he gave Graham? What if Woolsey had taken the most 1st team reps from Spring through Fall camp? What if Woolsey started the games Graham did?
I guess this is what happens during a slow day at work….my mind starts to wonder and wierd thoughts pop into my head.

Kevin, what you described will cost in the neighborhood of $20-30 Mil. The 2013 legislature refused to fund a $35 Mil. to build a Pharmacy School for UH Hilo, even though the school was given conditional accreditation, after being promised that a physical plant for the school would be built. In other words, we’re talking about private funding for your dream building.
Graham starts, uh loses by 21; ss starts, uh loses by 14; iw starts, uh loses by 24. Higgins starts; uh wins by 10. Yes, I know, my stalker will now attack. That’s ok. That’s my assessment. End of story.
#35. the 3-3-5 D is not the base UH usually plays. It was Kaumeyer’s attempt to slow down two of the top QBs in the MWC.
When UH ran the R n S most teams defended us with some sort of nickel or dime package. This was Kaumeyer’s version of that.
#31 try and run a nice stride for a mile. take a break for a minute and do it again. and again. and again. bet your times decrease every mile. or make it real easy. sprint 100 yards, jog back, sprint 100 yards, jog back, sprint 100 yards, jog back. bet you wont be giving “your all” on those freakin sprints.
that’s the predicament of the defense, they’ve been overused and seem to be pacing themselves. they got the julian sensley syndrome.
that’s a coaching oversight, not being able to tell when a player is not going all out. all the receivers do it every game.

It shows a true investment in the success of ALL student-athletes in athletics and subseqently in academics as well.
UH SA’s have already gone on to make their families and Hawaii proud by becoming contributing members of society and a Development or “Enrichment” center is much more efficient and logical expendature worth investing in as opposed to the mind-numbing suggestions of a on-campus football stadium that can neither be supported well considering the current infrastructure on lower campus and the surrounding areas. …. ….. …… 🙄
Private funding yes… so until the specs of what the meeting between AD Jay and Oracle President Mark Hurd are made publicly.. one can hope. Which is why in my post I opined “The Oracle Student Athlete Development Center at UH Manoa”… as in hopefully the Oracle Corporation funds this thing.
And its not MY “dream building”, it should be something all UH fans should hope for if they really are concerned with developing young student-athletes to their maximum potential physically and mentally.
I’ve physically seen the training ammenities in place now and its not adequate size wise and asthetically and functionally.
Talking about facilities is what programs, and their supporters, do when they are losing. It’s a good distraction from talking about the truth. Nothing pleasant about the truth, so let’s talk facilities. All good.
Asking for money when you are 0-5 is a brilliant idea. I can see a lot of people lining up to throw their money at bj and his cohorts. Why not? The guy is running a tight ship.

Had some collaboration with upper and lower last season. Saw it when Ka Leo students were doing the post game videos and interviews for softball and it was used on the UH website. Not sure how the other sports handled theirs but that’s what I saw.
Not sure if it will be done this year, but it was interesting to see and nice to see other students work with other students.

IIRC, I have only heard coaches say “we need to execute better” – “we need to hang on to the ball” – “we need to give the QB more time” – etc. To me, this sounds like blaming the players.
IDR Chow or Kaumeyer saying they need to do a better job in preparing the players or use a better defense, etc.

Unless one of us turns massively wealthy and decides to single handedly build facilities, like Phil Knight or Boone Pickens, UH will never have facilities competitive to Pac12 schools. Even with donors willing and able, there’s still a massive amount of beaurocratic BS you have wade through in Hawaii education department. All bets are off if a heiau is uncovered.
Tomorrow, I will not be disappointed to see Chow go conservative, Kaumeyer use the 3 -5 base D, and see Graham start.
It will only increase my chances of winning my agreements with Darren and al.

Yes, no, maybe so… what UH needs are fans, young fans in big numbers. It needs young fans that will grow up to be old fans who will give a little here and there through their years. It’s a long term investment, but it can be done. Got to make every sporting venue, youth friendly. By youth, I mean 18-24. Make it inviting to them (wi-fi, gathering areas, etc.). Make it affordable (Heavily discount tickets for full-time AND part-time students at all Jr. Colleges and Colleges on the islands). So on and so forth. The young fans are the future for the program. That’s where the effort has to be. The return won’t be there right now but it will snowball over the years.
I’d go so far as to include Chaminade, HPU, and all those other small colleges under the “student discount” umbrella and try to get them to come and enjoy UH sports.

This reminds me of a (true) story involving al and whitey in the early days of the blog, when they learned that they both were going to be in downtown Vegas at the same time (wasn’t a UH game).
whitey told Al he’s staying at the Fremont and would walk across the street to meet Al. Al agreed. But the meet never happened… why? Because (1) neither knew each other’s real or full names, (2) they didn’t know what the other looked like, and (3) didn’t have each other’s email address or cell phone number, (4) both did not have internet access in Vegas (at the time).
They eventually met often in Maui. UH road games is another event when Tsai-kos can meet in person. The al-whitey situation is one reason that I created the Tsai-ko Away game planner at:

I usually try to put all attendees in touch via email so they can share contact info/small get-together plans at their own discretion. If I don’t have their email (they just announced on the blog), then probably no meet possibilities unless you already know the usual road game Tsai-ko crew.
#58….I understand that. But we have to start somewhere. Just think about it. IIRC, the last stat about UH Alumni we received at my work place were somewhere in the neighborhood of over 270,000 alumni as of last year. If we could reach each one of those alumni and each one gave $50 on average per year to the university, that would be $10 million in added revenue….but that doesn’t happen. People in Hawaii tend to associate more with their high school and donate there for some reason. 🙂
57.. Kaumeyer is adjusting the scheme because of how the other team stacks up. Fresno gets rid of the ball so quickly, a pass rush usually can’t get to Carr anyways (Fresno gives up very few sacks because of this). Boise played 3-3-5, but was too passive and Carr chewed em up. UH went 3-3-5 and played the same way, keeping everything in front of them. UH brought more pressure in the second half and Fresno was able to rush Carr into some mistakes. Also, UH held Carr to his worst game of the year, even though they still got 40 something. Basically no big plays after 1st Q given up.
Vs SJSU, it appeared that Kaumeyer was prepping for SJSU to throw it all over the place, but SJSU did the opposite and ran the ball. That was surprising as SJSU was really bad at rushing the ball all year, but to their credit, they made up their minds that they were going to be balanced and that worked against UH who easily had their worst game defensively all year.
Other than a couple blown assignments that gave up big plays, Fales wasn’t very good.
I think UH has a good game. I think it’s going to be a close game. Cornett is very good and Herring added a spark to UNLV, and they might have a decent crowd since this is like the first decent win streak in a decade or two. The radio chatter is very upbeat here in Vegas this week.
Defense just needs to play fast. Hopefully Kennedy gets more playing time, but only if 100% healthy.
I agree with Jeezy… #1 priority is stuffing Cornett. UNLV might try to catch UH off guard by passing early, but ultimately the offense must run through Cornett for success.
NeQuan needs to lock down on UNLV’s lone deep threat, Davante Davis. Caleb Herring… he likes to run under pressure and doesn’t have the best pocket discipline, so UH needs to force Herring to beat them with his arm. He’s a typical running QB that’s completing 75% since taking the QB job. It’s a little deceiving as it’s against bad defenses, and he only pulls the trigger if he sees the open target (he doesn’t anticipate like Derek Carr or Sean Mannion).

It’s not the assigment football that’s making it not fun football for the young Hawaii football players, its the pressure to win with all the negative, crabbing, cry baby fans complaining about losing, complaining about the coaches, complaining just to complain because there life sucks and want other people to feel negative and crabby too. Football players always play assignment football until the play breaks down and they have to improvise.
It’s us the Hawaii Warriors fans that make it not fun for the young players, if we all would just quit crabbing and whining and let the coaches, coach, and let the young men play. I’m guilty of crabbing too! And I know there are a lot of posters here that are guilty too! But maybe they could start winning some games, if we just stop being so negative toward the coaches and the players.
I still am predicting Hawaii wins ina squeaker at Sam Boyd Stadium. In a high scoring affair, since I believe Hawaii defense can’t stop the run and UNLV defense stop the pass.

Weather is going to be awesome for gametime. Just hoping for no wind, because Sam Boyd Stadium is one of the worst football stadiums in the country to tailgate at. In fact, it’s just one of the worst stadiums in FBS. Sam Boyd makes Aloha Stadium look like CenturyLink in Seattle (Seahawks).
Sam Boyd’s parking lot is dirt and gravel. If it’s windy, you have to dust off your spam musubi before each bite.
On the plus side, they serve beer and well drinks. I purchased plenty of them watching Moniz airmail and one-hop open WRs all game in 2011.

I hope things have changed there in the last few years. When we went, UNLV had folks directing parking on the way in, but nobody to direct traffic on the way out. I don’t know if they all left because it was a blowout, but it was a mess. Hit the restrooms before leaving the stadium 🙂
Hopefully in the future, Las Vegans and UH football fans alike will be treated to a new stadium in Clark County. Sorry to say, if I were Sam Boyd, I would be ashamed that the stadium next to the sewage outfall is named after me. Strip hoteliers and UNLV are working on a new initiative (again) to fund and build a new stadium near the Strip. So hopefully, there will be no need to tailgate in the Mojave Desert dust in the future. Hard to eat spam musubis with sand on it.
By the way, Clark Country’s sewage outfall goes into Lake Mead. And this is where Southern Nevada gets it water from. So Ninth Islanders, suggest you no drink tap water if you can help it.
#43 – then is it not the coaches responsibility to keep the players fresh by subbing? do you want a tired player playing who will not do his job because he is tired? my belief is that the defense is not doing well when they face a high tempo office because they don’t know what formation they need to be in to counter the offensive formation. the defensive coaches must teach and provide help to the defensive players. right now, they are just doing things without purpose, trying to use speed and brute strength to overcome the other team, but not having real speed and strength, they are not successful.
Mmm….when I went to watch the “show me the moniz” show in ’11, we parked & tailgated in a nice big grassy area. No dust at all…..only the desert heat!
