Large turnout at workout

About 80 Warriors participated in today’s 11-on-11 drills at the Ching Athletic Complex field. One of the spectators was former UH defensive end Travis LaBoy, now with the San Francisco 49ers:

Good to hear about the 80 Warriors participating in the 11-on-11 drills.

Nice photos–the kicker drill is not something I’ve heard of before but it makes sense.

Interesting to read how USC had just *1* compliance person during part of the time when Pete Carroll was their coach. No wonder some things were overlooked and they couldn’t monitor their players!

To put things in perspective, let us compare the number of people in the compliance departments of the Pac-10 schools:

    Stanford: 7
    Cal: 4
    Arizona: 4
    Arizona State: 4
    Washington: 4
    Washington State: 4
    UCLA: 4
    Oregon: 4
    Oregon State: 3
USC: 1 (for part of the time in their past, other times they had 2)
USC: 8 (after they fill the 2 positions they have open now)

  15. madeinhawaii July 7, 2010 10:42 am

  17. papajoe2 July 7, 2010 10:42 am

while coaching punters, we would stand on one side line and try to punt it straight down the line, landing on the same side line or as close as possible.

  18. papajoe2 July 7, 2010 10:44 am

    #14 Garret, and UH 1?

  19. madeinhawaii July 7, 2010 10:47 am

    papjoe2…

1 if she came back from vacation and isn’t on furlough.

  20. Garret July 7, 2010 10:48 am

    papajoe2,

For much of that time UH had 2 compliance officers (plus 2 student workers), but for the past 2.5 years UH has had just 1 (no student workers). It is amazing to me that for a period of time UH might have had 2 compliance people while USC had just 1.

  21. Garret July 7, 2010 10:49 am

When you count in the furlough time, UH has had less than 1 full-time person in compliance.

  22. Stephen Tsai July 7, 2010 10:50 am

I think the idea of hitting the second goal post is the bend-it-like-Beckham theory. Both kickers were able to hit the far upright.

  55. madeinhawaii July 7, 2010 11:54 am

Gee, I dunno about best 25 cents burger at Backstore..

There used to be a lunch wagon in the Halawa Housing tract just past the chain link gate behind Aiea Elementary when I as in the early 60’s. We all used to post watch and scramble out to get our burgers there whenever school lunch was “unacceptable.” Which was every other day… 😉 Was so ono… ah the good memories of the hanabata days, eh?

Then again, 50 cents for real buttered popcorn, a drink, and a movie at Queens Theater in Kaimuki was hard to beat in the 50’s, too. Don’t remember if that included a hotdog… so long ago…

  56. madeinhawaii July 7, 2010 11:58 am

I don’t think I had money in Waianae during the very early 60’s… cause I only remember hiking, hunting, owama fishing, swimming, picking mangoes, papaya, plucking chickens, diving for lobsters, crying after my pup got run over.. not once but quite a few times, throwing net for opelu and omaka, and.. oh yeah.. I remember now… shave ice across Pokai Bay!… So I guess I had a few pennies if I remember the Shave Ice there, eh?

MADEINHAWAII – A group of individuals in Kaimuki have banded together to get the Queen Theatre restored. Read something about their efforts maybe three weeks ago in the SA.

Couldn’t sleep so i got up at 4 am and accomplished a huge amount of work. Stoked on coffee right now, but I’ll probably crash in an hour or so. However, what I was able to do once UH offices opened up was initiate some inquiries about grants & awards to UH and some accounting documents. Will let folks know what I find out.

    Back to work.

    Re: Laboy

Got to check out Kekaula’s 2-part interview with TLaboy.

While it’s good to see him get a second chance, I hope he no bachi himself by talking all that smack. He readily said that he has it out for a few people and would really like to “hurt” some of them. Trust me, I not even exaggerating on this one — bradduh was talkin’ a bunch of stuff on the news.

We all know that he has struggled with injuries throughout his career. I’m going to pull the Hawaii Style card on this one — Bradduh Travis…keep that stuff to yourself. Let your play do the talking. And most of all, stay healthy. You might never get another chance again.

    BIK

  63. RedZone July 7, 2010 12:18 pm

Why is Tyler Hadden’s foot not pointed toward the goal post like Scott’s foot? I am not an expert in field goal kicking, but in soccer you are taught to point your non-kicking foot where you want the ball to go.

  78. Garret July 7, 2010 12:39 pm

Greg Salas was included in this list of the top 10 receivers for the 2010 season.

    GREG SALAS, HAWAII

Playing in the WAC usually won’t help a player in terms of national attention. Add to that the fact that he plays well off the mainland at the University of Hawaii and you can understand how this talented wideout has gone overlooked week-in and week-out. As a junior in 2009, Salas was among the nation’s leaders, finishing with 106 receptions for 1,590 yards and eight TDs, leading the WAC in both receptions and receiving yards per game (fourth in the nation at 122.3 ypg). He plays the slot position for the Warriors and the 6-2 California native is as reliable an outlet as there is in FBS. Hawaii finished just under .500 last year (6-7) and if the team is to earn a winning season in 2010, you can bet Salas’ fingerprints will be all over it.

  85. chawan_cut July 7, 2010 12:55 pm

Our seats at Aloha Stadium are perfect for “conversations” with the opposing team. During last year’s visit by the dang Broncos, I “asked” a few players, including the kicker, what they do in Boise ALL year long. I “said”, its cold, there’s nothing around, and its BOISE. The kicker, being wise, said win. The OL, also “wise”, said work out. As he said this, he made the motion of homey’s workout regimen, the “12 oz curl”. I then replied, if I were you, I’d do the same thing.

  86. chawan_cut July 7, 2010 12:58 pm

for 100% offseason workout participation, I wonder if that means they can’t leave BOISE for 4 whole years. do they tell their recruits that? kiss your family & friends goodbye. no wonder there’s so many people that are hiding in the woods and hills that play with guns.

Great to hear the 80 player turnout Stephen; can you report to us everyday how many show up?

Everyone–Nakoa needs our help to pay for the summer school classes; so our players can stay over the summer and practice; just like Boise St. does–they have become a top 5 or 10 team; doing it with just 3-star recruits. It must be because of these offseason workouts!

  100. Curt July 7, 2010 1:18 pm

    Shoko,

Yeah. The o-line’s the key. Gotta give the QB time to look around. Even Colt had a hard time when we couldn’t protect him from 4 rushing linemen in the Sugar Bowl. It’s pretty bad when the opponents only rush four and they’re pressuring the QB on almost every play. Can’t have that.

  101. chawan_cut July 7, 2010 1:22 pm

    kazz,
you should sit down by us and “converse” with the players. its fun.

What did Alvarez think of Wisconsin’s kickers booting footballs into the student section and then crying to HPD about the Manoa Maniacs keeping the balls.

Im so damn sick of other team’s kickers coming out when the marching band is on the field trying to perform and then kicking balls towards them as they leave to go get undressed in the big North end zone tunnel.

I’m waiting for some guy or girl with flute to just run up there and turn an opposing kicker into a human lollipop.

#91 – I think Mack took a voluntary pay cut in response to the State worker furlough (and to show contrition for his Notre Dame comments at last year’s WAC football conf). I remember one of the sports reporters asking Dave Shoji about paycuts and furloughs… Dave answered something like he would consider a voluntary pay cut, but was waiting for info from the UHAD as to the impact to UH. Remember the UH Professional Assembly (Union) went to court over the plan to cut salary (and/or furlough) last year.

  116. Shoko July 7, 2010 1:38 pm

    OTTO,
Didn’t that voluntary paycut go to UH’s LGBA support group to educate about the Gay issues? Only reason I ask is that I remember on the HA comment board, a few people were complaining why it had to go to a specific group and not back into the general fund.

  117. chawan_cut July 7, 2010 1:42 pm

    kazz,
i did not know that was happening. or we would’ve “conversed” even more. i remember the notre dame kicker doing that last HB and they didn’t return the balls either. the cops didn’t do anything. it was funny to see the ND kicker and team trainers get all habut with no one helping them.
and you don’t have to tell me about the other team interfering with halftime, we let them know about it.
you should really come by to visit us. Stretch too. even ST has heard me “conversing”.

  118. papajoe2 July 7, 2010 1:42 pm

#77, Rage 777, maybe that’s why Enos was so inconsistent. Nail the basics in your head and if you are in a slump, easy to go back to the basics.

  121. papajoe2 July 7, 2010 1:45 pm

#77, I don’t know how Enos’ kick went on that one in the picture but it looks like he pulls it because his foot is facing to the right and he is trying to kick down the middle.

  125. Kazz July 7, 2010 1:51 pm

    Chawan,

Oh you would have seen your BP rise!!!

When Wisconsin’s kicker realized he was in the way of the marching band, he decided to kick sideline to sideline and all the balls were pelting fans, mostly students. DRUNK and angry students… 😈

After several balls weren’t returned, a Wisconsin trainer actually ran and jumped the wall and climbed into the student section attempting to get the balls back, some people shoved him around like a ***** and when he jumped back down he cried to HPD that the balls werent being given back and in a classic moment the three officers there motioned that they shouldn’t be kicking them in that direction in the first place.

Im amazed that trainer wasn’t beaten within and inch of his life. He should consider that a gift of “aloha”.

(Ok NOW, I am really missing football!!!!!!!)

Brennan, a fan favorite due to his record-breaking career at Hawaii and for some late heroics during some preseason games as a rookie two years ago, will battle it out with Bartel for the third QB slot. Brennan has said that he is much more comfortable both in the new offensive system and in what the new coaches want out of him. Unlike Zorn, they are not micromanaging his footwork or his throwing motion.

reference Scott Enos trying to hit the goal post from the sideline.

azngamer808 learned that at the Ray Guy kicking camp to aim at the goal post
from the endzone line corner, then the goal line & sideline intersection, 5 yard line &
sideline etc… This drill helped Nicholas become automatic from 40 yards.

they asked if we knew Ayat, and we told them we knew he was on UH team.
Camp coaches said he had a powerful leg but not coachable. Didn’t know why
he even bothered to be there.

    Re-LeBron James

I say he stays put in Cleveland. The announcement comes tomorrow.

Would a person put his hometown team, fans, playmates and friends in Cleveland through the agony of a televised special tomorrow, only to announce that he’s going elsewhere? I wouldn’t think so.

Personally, I hope LeBron doesn’t use this big production of where he’s going only to break the Clevelander’s hearts. I think he would want to show class. Also it doesn’t make sense to slow roll your homies.

That is why I think he’s staying.

Of course it’s great to see eighty players out on the field working out in the mornings. There’s no doubt that the preparation and practices are good or the team. But more importantly than anything else, having eighty guys on the field shows us that there is real leadership on this team. Every season is a new season, and with each season the team takes on a new personality. The success of each individual season depends in large part to the veteran leadership on that team. The success of these summer workouts are indicative of the leadeship and personality of this fall’s team.

It is too bad that Tennessee doesn’t want a high-profile season opener in 2011. With USC’s loss of vet players to transfers and the recruiting limitations, I would think that Tennessee would want a chance to face USC. Maybe they want USC’s upperclassmen to graduate and face USC after their limited recruiting classes have to be relied on.

In the latest chapter of the growing feud between former coach Lane Kiffin and the Vols, UT athletic director Mike Hamilton turned down an offer from the Trojans to open next season against them in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta according to ESPN.com’s Bruce Feldman.

“We told [USC] we could play ’em in a few years but we can’t make it work with our schedule next year,” Hamilton told ESPN.com on Wednesday.

    roysan16,

if Lebron leaves it would be a kick in the oloz for Cleveland fans and his hometown. He would definitely become the bastard child. I don’t know why they hype him up so much, Kobe Bryant is still the best player in the NBA hands down! Lebron is gifted but I don’t think he is even second best either. When Kobe retires, watch out for Kevin Durant to rule the league. Anyway, until Lebron starts winning a few NBA championships he should not be considered with the likes of Jordan or Kobe or even Dwayne Wade for that matter. To me some of these NBA players are prima-donnas and only care about money, this is what has made the NBA become more and more crappy. Now its more about trying to stack the crap out of a team to win a championship, sad…

  212. jm2375 July 7, 2010 8:48 pm

ST and other J-E-T-S fans – Jets are the team that gets the treatment this year on HBO’s “Hard Knocks”. Training camp series. I think last year was the Cowgirls.

Travis Laboy is still a beast and now that he gets a chance to play with Issak Sopoaga again under Coach Singletary, shute it doesnt get any better than that. We all know our Warrior players are physical and thats the only way Coach Singletary knows how to play, physical smashmouth football!

  215. Pauoa Boy July 7, 2010 9:01 pm

So the question is, does Bryant Moniz reclaim his spot as the starting quarterback? To me the answer would be yes, only because he has the game time experience already and seems to be more comfortable in the huddle than the other QB’s. I think Rausch should maybe have switched schools for playing time, I’m not too high on Austin although people feel otherwise, Graves seems like the next great QB in the works, Cory should maybe consider switching positions cause I think he’ll get shoved more down on the depth chart with Kevin Spain coming in, Shutter is also a work in progress and could be solid later on. Dunno, I think Moniz gives us the best chance right now to win but I also wouldn’t mind seeing Graves as a 4yr. starter either, I think he got the “It” factor.

  216. Slugger July 7, 2010 9:07 pm

In this video Chad Owens and his special teams coach go over his long punt return in last weeks game. (released on the Toronto’s official site 7/6).

The last 6 yards of the run was amazing. Vintage Owens.Determined. Strong willed. All heart. Very reminiscent of what Hawaii fans use to see when he played for the Warriors.

A quote from Owens, “Towards the end of the run I stiff armed the defender, and it was like riding a wave in.”

From the video one can see that Owens looks happy. It great to see that his juices are flowing and his dream of playing football is still alive.

I’m still not getting it. Were you saying in yesterdays thread that the employees of the athletic department like the secretary’s, coaches and support staff are paid for by our tax dollars? I was under the impression that the revenues from tickets sales, TV, donations etc. were paying for these things.

All employees in the Department of Athletics work for the State of Hawai`i. Income from ticket sales, concession stands, donations, etc., pay for the costs of the teams – uniforms, travel, recruitment, scholarships, marketing, advertising, printing programs, etc. Some designated donations may be used to pay for some personnel costs for the coaching staff, but they are still state employees so a portion of their fringe benefits are paid for by us taxpayers. Any regular employee provding clerical or professional services who is not a student and who is eligible to join one of the public employee unions also has his or her salary paid by us.

The costs of operating the venues themselves – The Stan, The Les, and the softball stadium – are also paid for out of the income generated primarily by ticket sales & corproate sponsorships. Whether there are 500 or 5000 fans in these venues, the operating costs for utilities are pretty much the same except for flushing toilets.

That’s why being able to rent out The Stan or The Les for other than UH activities is so incredibly important.

The costs of the ushers, game-day ticket sales & secuity guards are supposed to be paid for out of revenues and corporate sponsorships, but if they can’t cover the costs, then the University of Hawaii at Manoa does. That accounts for some of the deficit.

If you have followed Garret’s posts over the past couple of years, you will note that many D-l-A FBS state institutions have developed strong donation & corporate underwriting programs for both capital as well as operating budgets. That concept currently is severely limited here in Hawai`i and needs to be changed.

Yes, the accounting is complex in some ways, but the basic principles are fairly simple. The venues belong to the University and are operated by the Department of Athletics which is part of the University of Hawai`i at Manoa. Some operating expenses are absorbed by the school – primarily personnel fringe benefit costs – while others are charged against the AD’s revenues.

The proposed student fee will help reduce the yearly deficit as well as reduce the prior years’ deficits. Building winning teams and increasing attendance will definitely help reduce the yearly deficit as will increasing donations and corporate sponsorhships and tv contracts.

BTW – the above comments only apply to on-campus venues. The situation at Aloha Stadium is entirely different.

    WDoc,

All I know is that some of my blogger friends use gmail to capture comments on their blog. They almost never check this gmail address.

But, they usually check their other personal email account that attracts email from their family or close friends.

    That’s what I meant.

    Shoko on # 106,

To say “UH’s O-Line was overpowered” isn’t saying the whole story. Coaches admitted that Colt was hanging on to the ball too long, trying to make the big play. What was revealed much later & not on the front pages of sports media was that the Officiating crew was reprimanded/chastised for failing to make off-sides / encroachment calls against the Georgia team. I’m talking about a “crew” here and not just one referee. They were not allowed to officiate for some small portion of time; a veritable slap on the wrist. Had they made calls on the up-and-up & if Colt had stuck to the game plan, the score may not have been as disparate. They also could’ve brought in Tyler Graunke earlier. When they brought him in, he went right down the field and made it look easy, which made the developments the following year all the more disappointing as I expected Tyler to pick up where Colt left off. I’m not saying those officials were directly paid off to “fix” the game – they may have just been protecting their own; making sure that an SEC team wasn’t embarrassed on national TV in their own backyard. I heard about this weeks, if not months, after the game. Had this been brought out the following DAY, we wouldn’t have had to listen to all that crap about how non-BCS teams can’t compete and will always be out-classed, etc.

    papajoe2 – re: Enos

Enos was inconsistent all of Last year; agreed. This year during Spring practice, he was “money” – he did not look like the same player. If he kicked like that last year, we would’ve won at least one and maybe 2 more games. With Hadden (Haddon?) & Niiro to push him, I think our kicking game is in much better shape than last year along with a more experienced Dunnachie.

Gooood morning! Although it’s a Thursday, it sure feels like Friday. Guess it would be if I took the day off tomorrow.

    Mahalo Protector.
Can’t disagree with your assessment that “Colt was hanging on to the ball too long”, but when the Georgia secondary is ‘white’ and Bess, Rivers, Hawthorne and Grice-Mullen is the ‘rice’, kind of hard to get the pass off when you have Howard, Curran, Miller and Battle blitzing like they were invading Poland.

As far as officiating, I’ll have to research this article and watch the game again. There isn’t a game I’ve seen that off-side or encroachment fails to be called. Nonetheless, I’ll watch the game again. Gives me something to watch this weekend, while I patiently await the start of the football season. Hmm, maybe I should take the day off tomorrow. 🙂

    Curt,
Yep, Warriors O-line was overpowered by the Georgia D-line. Marcus Howard had Colt running all over the place.

Haven’t seen a replay of the Sugar Bowl, but what I can say is that if you have two defensive ends who run 4.5 or 4.4 40’s, exploding upfield at the snap of the ball, with no run responsibilties, it may look like they were offsides. Maybe they were. maybe the weren’t offsides. But I can see where the perception that they are offsides can come from. May have been just a perception.
