Lane to redshirt

Malcolm Lane, who was projected as a No. 1 right wideout, told the Warrior Beat yesterday he will redshirt this season to focus on academics. Lane is in good academic standing with both the school and the NCAA. But by redshirting, it will enable Lane to earn a bachelor’s degree in December 2010. That would mean his graduation and the end of his NCAA career would coincide. Lane did not redshirt in his first three UH seasons. Jovonte Taylor has been practicing as the No. 1 right wideout.

Happy birthday to Midnight.

Congrats and best of luck Malcome.

This is money in the bank for both Lane and UH. The 2010 season will need him. Gets to play against USC and Colorado. But, will we will miss cheering for him this year and his electrifying run backs.

Shows the upmost resonsibility and respect towards the program.

Lane will be missed, especially as a return option.

More proof that student athletes have their hands full. Those with families are really juggling.

Keep up the good work fellas.

  21. Nalani August 9, 2009 7:41 am

I just scanned yesterday’s blog. Thanks so much to A House, Kazz and GB who gave me some info on Kahai. We were there for the first hour of morning practice but had to leave before 1v1s to watch Pono play his scrimmage v Campbell.

Kahai is working hard and hoping to earn some playing time this year. But it will be a challenge, as it should be in a D1 program.

I do appreciate the well wishes and updates from everyone. Big mahalo for that. Pls keep ’em coming. I will try to make some practices next week but then will be in Japan for a week on tour.

BTW, Campbell RB/SB looked super fast. Pono said he is very very good. (Pono playing SS). Forget his name, but the kid committed to UH for next season.

  22. SJ Bobkins August 9, 2009 7:43 am

Good morninng from Arizona. I have a couple of questions: does the athletic dept publish/sell a 2009 press book? Many universities sell them out of the bookstores and their wonderful for getting ready for the season. Sorry the LV party had to
be scraped, I had to make a trip to the fridge everytime I saw the menu. Id like to fly or drive up for the UNLV game and sit with the green shirted lei wearing fans. When will the UH ticket office be putting them on sale. Have a wonderful day. SJ

  23. Stephen Tsai August 9, 2009 7:53 am

    SJ Bobkins:
The athletic department does sell its media guides to the public.
I think it goes for about $20. It’s available by calling the RainBowTique stores.
They could be collector’s items. The NCAA might do away with them next year.

  24. Da Punchbowl Kid August 9, 2009 7:53 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

If Malcolm’s redshirt year will assure that he gets a degree, more power to him. The main thing is, we’ll see him next year.

Good Morning SJ! What’s the weather like up your neck of the woods?

  25. Stephen Tsai August 9, 2009 7:57 am

I don’t expect Lane to be working out with the team this year. I think he’s going to focus mainly on school.

  26. Stephen Tsai August 9, 2009 7:58 am

    Training camp roster:
The NCAA allows for substitutions only in the case of injuries. I think they would have to do some sort of petition to replace Lane with another player.

  27. niho mano August 9, 2009 7:59 am

Malcolm, we the fans will mis you this season, but we will be looking for you next season, so study hard…..go warriors!!!

  28. NYUH August 9, 2009 8:02 am

Good choice by Lane. Get that degree and more doors open for you in the future. Now the other guys will get more reps.

Okay, okay, I’m not buying it.This whole Malcolm Lane thing STINKS. It sounds like a new version of B.S to me. What’s the real story…? That’s what I wanna know. Like the rest of the guys on the team aren’t going to class…? Like the rest of the guys on the team don’t wanna graduate…?

    What’s the REAL story here?

  41. Garret August 9, 2009 9:49 am

The NCAA allows for substitutions only in the case of injuries. I think they would have to do some sort of petition to replace Lane with another player.

It is pretty disappointing that UH couldn’t have found out earlier about Lane needing to sit out this year…the roster spot could have been used for another player.

  42. bighilofan2 August 9, 2009 9:49 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

Read the news from A House, Kazz and GB yesterday. Thanks alot!

    babydaddymama, give me a break.

    Malcolm Lane,
my best wishes to you sir. Hope you come back next year with a big load off your mind. Tsaikos are rooting for you! However you say it, This ain’t PE is an understood description of top level football.
No matter how you say it, a punch in da face is a punch in da face.
There are talkers, and there are doers. Hurry back, sir. We’ll be waiting for ya!

It was weird to be first today–I was in the car about to leave for Legoland and I just thought I’d check the blog while waiting for the kids to put on their seat belts.

  44. Garret August 9, 2009 9:51 am

Tombo found this article about Destin Stewart.

Destin Stewart, an Oklahoma City Douglass graduate and late addition to Tulsa’s roster, will be eligible to play for the Hurricane this season.

He originally signed a letter of intent with Hawaii, and was quoted prior to last weekend’s all-state games that he was eager to play for the Warriors. Sources say he changed his mind when he was asked to grayshirt, and he was released from his commitment by the WAC school.

“We had recruited him (before he signed with Hawaii),” Graham said. “He’s going to play the strong safety position for us.”

  45. bighilofan2 August 9, 2009 10:00 am

    Garrett,

This is twice that our team’s planning skills are being showcased ina dim light. Proper prior planning prevents poor performance, wat happenin?

Da plusses are Tormey, Shaw, Smith and the returnees who’ve been working really hard to become nasty and nasty.

Thanks ST for the press quide info I read somewhere that some major schools are no longer putting them out. I’ll be sad to see them a thing of the past. I’ll follow up on the ticket link, thanks for the help, Im looking forward to meeting those of you who will be in Las Vegas.

  55. Da Punchbowl Kid August 9, 2009 10:51 am

We’re a full twenty degrees cooler today, than you, Bobkins.

  56. Garret August 9, 2009 10:57 am

Today we have a high of 76, low of 65…same forecast for Monday through Thursday. I have no idea what the weather people do with their time in San Diego…at least the weather people in Hawaii have to worry about the chance of rain and monitor things during hurricane season.

  57. Garret August 9, 2009 10:59 am

    Comparison from Miami’s scrimmage:

Bess: 3 catches for 26 yards
Camarillo: 2 catches for 18 yards

Miami’s starting QB’s first pass was thrown to Bess, going for a 13 yard gain. Having Bess start the scrimmage and get the first pass was a good sign that he’s pulling ahead in that battle. However, Camarillo is an extremely hard worker and will get better as his knee gets closer to 100%, so Bess will have to keep up what he’s doing to get that starting WR job.

Some people seem to forget that the players are students first and football players second – or is that being too naive?

I always thought things were going well for me until I was put on probation in high school, undergraduate, graduate school! You never know until the grades come out.

  60. Stephen Tsai August 9, 2009 11:20 am

    Re: Recruits
I wouldn’t fret too much. With the exception of George Daily-Lyles and maybe Billy Ray Stutzmann, freshmen aren’t being counted on for this year. I think the gray-shirt method is intruiging; build credits, then you get a full spring to train.

  61. Maverick August 9, 2009 11:29 am

Ok. You’re so right. NOTHING is ever as it seems.

    Here’s the truth:

    1) We didn’t land on the moon.
    2) Saddam Hussein’s real name is George Sanderson and the CIA found him doing dinner theater in Cleveland, OH. Whenever the government needs a distraction they call him up to waive his sabre in the air…
    3) The moon is made of cheese.
    4) Tropical Storm Felicia doesn’t exist and neither does hurricanes. They are all a ploy by companies like Wal Mart and Costco to boost revenue.

  67. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 9, 2009 12:16 pm

Back in the day when I was a graduate student, I used to tutor athletes in English and the various social sciences to keep them eligible not just to play but also to stay in school. I’d work with other tutors in math, basic science, and special fields such as computers or foreign languages.

We found that there was HUGE difference in where student athletes were in terms of basic or core knowledge & skills in reading, writing, language comprehensivion, logic, history, economics, political science, math, science, etc.

As expected, family income and parental educational levels were two key indicators as to how well student-athletes did in college.

But there were two other common socio-economic factors that we found with respect to being serious about doing well in school. First, the more non-sports responsibilities a student-athlete had to carry, the more likely he was to be serious about his academic achievements. Usually, this meant taking care of an elderly family member or younger brothers & sister in the absence of a parental unit.

Second, being involved with a faith-based organizations was also important in determining whether a student-athlete would do well in school, especially during the first couple of years. In years three and four, getting seriously involved with someone also tended to have a positive effect.

One of my colleagues wrote a paper on his experiences which later mutated into his master’s thesis. I wonder how much things have changed over the past couple of decades?

  68. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc August 9, 2009 12:34 pm

whoops: comprehensivion = comprehension; organizations = organization

Nothing wrong with Lane’s plans, but….

I do agree with Garret why this was found out so late that nobody else could have filled that roster spot.

According to the Tsai-Meister, he was in good standing with UH and the NCAA, so, to have an unfilled roster spot, somebody screwed up somewhere? No?

  72. Richfromoc August 9, 2009 1:58 pm

Look, yes they are student athetics but there is an obligation to the university for the free tuition as well so there is a legitimate point in why a football player on scholarship who is making his grades decides to pass a year to focus on studies at the 11th hour. Please don’t look down on people on wondering why this is happening.

  73. Ralph August 9, 2009 2:07 pm

Mouton started as the kick returner for the Titans. I hope Hawthorne gets some PT with the Bills

  74. Richfromoc August 9, 2009 2:08 pm

  75. J-Dog August 9, 2009 2:12 pm

    Mouton with the TD-clearing BLOCK!

  76. lava August 9, 2009 2:13 pm

I don’t need to know all the facts re: Lane’s red-shirting, but I trust the team will learn from the mistake and avoid it repeating itself.

I hope to see him back on the field next year.

  77. whitey August 9, 2009 2:16 pm

FlT, know what you are saying, but no one screwed up. that is an ncaa rule and we will abide by it and move on. we have 104 students in camp which is more than enough to try an teach, coach, and get ready for the opening game. sometimes anthills seem like mountains, but in this case, there is no anthill or mountain, just plain nothing. my best to malcolm and hope he will be on schedule to graduate and play football next year.

  78. whitey August 9, 2009 2:19 pm

Richfromoc, like i said, there ain’t no anhill or mountain, so kazz’s answer is appropriate and “VERY FUNNY”!!!!!!!!!

  82. Ralph August 9, 2009 2:40 pm

mouton is 29, haven’t seen hawthorne. it was announced last week that he had been added to the roster from the practice squad. if he sees PT it will come in the second half with all the other newbies. Vince Young looked bad on his first series.

  83. jm2375 August 9, 2009 2:41 pm

I’m finally home, unpacked (mostly) and doing laundry. The house still hasn’t cooled down yet. 3 weeks is a long time. Pix are downloaded, gotta go through ’em all (1200+) to get the best ones. As hubby says, it’s free….

Happy birthday to Midnight. Good luck to ML this year. Good to focus on school. Seems he has his head on straight. Hope he stays in shape too.

Thanks for all the updates on the practices.

So when’s the next lunch cc? 😀

CRW – I second the motion about living in Bethesda, although it maybe more expensive than other places. The Metro is wonderful, but the traffic is horrendous. Of course, I haven’t lived there since you were in preschool. Why not ask CB – didn’t he just move to a new place? 😀

Malcom Lane, I’m one of your many fans who believes, “you gotta do, what you gotta do.”

When you finished with that, I hope you still got some football left in your tank…but no worries if not; we all have a lot of aloha and love for our fellow warrior. God bless you.

  109. NYUH August 9, 2009 4:14 pm

Pre-season NFL is tough enough without having to suffer the irrelevant commentary. Why do I need more than 15 sec on the status of M. Vick? While a game is being played?

Picking on Mouton but his is hanging in there. CJ had a risky catch without a fair catch.

  110. NYUH August 9, 2009 4:25 pm

Seems like a really, really smart decision by ML. With his family in Hawaii, these are precious years before heading off to the mainland for a possible NFL career. He came from Germany and started playing as a freshman. Hawaii’s slow year offensively meant little pre-season fare and other WRs are getting the publicity in the HI media. Why not step back, focus on school, catch his breath. Come back for a super senior year.

  111. Stephen Tsai August 9, 2009 4:27 pm

Hey – what ever happened to die§el? 🙄

  116. royal crown August 9, 2009 4:49 pm

It was only recently that we saw Lane brimming with enthusiasm towards the upcoming season. In fact we saw him on the WB show. We learned that he was training hard, and he even traveled to Georgia in training with a team mate.

From the show we learned he couldn’t wait for the season to start. And help leading the Warriors. His body language and focus were on this season.

It’s hard to fathom an athlete, like Lane, investing this much time and effort in summer workouts and in the eleventh hour, and on precipice of training camp and the season announce that now he wants to get his schooling in order.

From what information we see it’s apparent that Lane, currently, is apparently about 3 semesters short of graduating. And he has met all the mandates in being eligible this year.

Yet he’s skipping. And, seemingly, on his own volition.

For me, presently, it seems odd that someone that was projected as being a play maker for the Warriors at WR and KR would balk at this opportunity of playing this year. When basically acquiring his degree, someday, perhaps maybe one semester later than projected is still attainable.

Next year at this time there’s no certainty for Lane of what is attainable in terms of football, for there’s so much volatility involved in football like having to dodge injuries and other players winning his job. So that’s why I didn’t understand his reasoning, when he had a great opportunity to shine this year. And where the window of opportunity is open now and it might not be open next year. Even his chance at the NFL might be in limbo.

With so many things at stake for Lane it does have me scratching my head. Simple logic would tell me that if Lane is here next year then his reason are indeed predicated on wanting to catch up on his academics. If he’s not here then it’s obvious something below the surface brewing prompted him in making this decision to skip this year.

  117. Ralph August 9, 2009 4:49 pm

I’m glad C.J. never gave up the dream and kept on working out and when the opportunity opened up he was ready. Didn’t he start with New Orleans as a FA

I know when I get up, the sky in my world is blue. Yours, well, it sounds like it’s pink.

My God, I’m a second time poster and you guys just tear into me. What gives…?

I was trying to be subtle, but for some you who don’t get it, well, maybe next time I’ll make it easier for you to connect the dots.

Jason Rivers remains a big “mystery” to me personally as to why he has yet to make it in the NFL.

It’s funny when you get older and your “priorities”, “concerns”, and “complaints” change.

When you’re 18 it’s like: “F**k my parents!!! Screw them!!!”

When you’re 22 its like: “Screw the government!!! F**k the president!!!”

    When you’re 40 its like: “I’m hungry…”

  129. Derek August 9, 2009 6:42 pm

I don’t really get it. Why would Lane redshirt when he’s in good academic standing and he’s a starter to boot? Can’t he focus on school during the season like everybody else and he can still graduate next December 2010. It’s his choice but something is amiss. I don’t think the whole story is being told. Like I said, if he’s a starter why would you sit out a whole season. I would think that he would want to play. Wouldn’t you? If he’s injured just say so.

Since we are celebrating 100 years of UH football this year, it’s time to bring out the retro uniforms and helmets. It might bring out more fans to the game(s). Anybody know what happened to Christian Vasconsellos?

  130. βρεω808 August 9, 2009 6:42 pm

    CRW-
If you will be working for the gov’t they’ll pay you over $120 a month in the greater DC area to offset metro/bus costs. So you can broaden your apt search area if you find places near the metro in either N. VA or MD. Personally, I’d choose somewhere in Bethesda.

Yep, will be working for Uncle Sam. The transit benefits is something I have to look over. With regards to living, I’d ideally like to find something close to the Metro as Garret, jm2375, and yourself have alluded to. Locations near MARC or VRE stations would hopefully be a last resort.

    Good evening everybody in Tsaikoland.

    babydaddymama

the dots I saw before your post appeared to say ST had talked to ML and he told us that he was not playing this year for personal reasons.
then apparently ST had talked to ML and tells us that ML is focusing on academics this year. then your post.

    thats a fair appraisal, no?

my rag was for assuming that ML wasn’t being upfront with ST about his reason for not playing this season. maybe my acuity, vision and interpretation wasn’t quite up to par. sounded to me like you wuz picking on a man who has put out for Warrior Nation.

you’re right, I wasn’t exactly acting nice nice. But since ST hasn’t been more forthcoming about reading anything else between the lines in his conversation with ML, I gotta assume ST reported exactamundo verbaseeoso. and i gotta assume the kid is not a quitter.

so if you didn’t mean the kid mean, please forgive me. i make mistakes and this coulda been one of them. is that what you’re telling me?

main thing is that our team knows we’ve got their back. all of them.

  173. βρεω808 August 9, 2009 8:15 pm

So I looked up “chantily cake” and here’s what I found:

The Chantilly cake is a delicacy in Hawaiʻi, dating back to the 1950s.[1] Arguably, the most popular Chantilly cakes are from Liliha Bakery. Usually, Chantilly cakes are chocolate cakes with a Chantilly frosting, which is essentially the coconut frosting from a German chocolate cake without the coconut.[2] This is in contrast to the typical usage of creme Chantilly, which refers to sweetened whipped cream. [3]

So I suppose the answer for jm2375 is Liliha Bakery – unless the bakery is pau. 😀

Article about Miami’s 5 biggest training camp battles mentions Bess in the battle for slot receiver.

    Slot receiver
The Dolphins have a stable of three capable, and experienced starters in Ted Ginn Jr., Greg Camarillo and Davone Bess. But Camarillo and Bess play similar roles, which means both would be idea at run quick hitches and drags out of the slot position. Bess is presently working there, but the Dolphins might change it up to diversify the type of receivers on the field at the same time. Rookie Patrick Turner could provide some length. Anthony Armstrong could infuse some speed. And Brandon London would provide physicality. All three are pushing to elevate their roles, but it’ll likely take a week or two of dominance to break into the three-receiver sets.

FAVORITE: Bess’ ability to find holes in coverages enabled him to contribute 32 catches and 365 yards in the six game the rookie replaced Camarillo as a starter late last season. This season he’s smarter, and stronger.

SLEEPER: There’s no debate. Turner’s been the rookie who has impressed his peers the most. But can this third-round pick master Dan Henning’s offense quick enough to contribute immediate?

Reading about this 11-year-old boy’s death made me extremely sad…and I really don’t understand how his mother and dog survived for days after she says her son died. Who goes on an “overnight camping trip” to Death Valley without any maps or compass while purposely going off road into deserted areas with extreme heat and no cell phone coverage?

Cute story and video about how a 13-year-old girl wrote a letter addressed to “Any Soldier” to express her support for the troops as they prepared to invade Iraq in Desert Storm and how the 19-year-old soldier who got that letter became pen pals with her. They lost touch for almost two decades, but found each other via Facebook…and they were married last month.

Despite the large number of unemployed in the US, there are over 100,000 unfilled nursing jobs…with one estimate of over 200,000 unfilled nursing jobs when jobs in retirement homes are taken into account. This article examines whether or not the US needs to get more Visas for nurses from overseas, or if improved training and pay for nurses would result in Americans being able to fill those jobs.

not scientific, but felicia appears to be on a path that will pass above the big island and maui. hopefully it misses all islands. there is a remanent of another storm south of kauai that is passing and hopefully that passes also.

With the regular bloggers we have had the opportunity to meet each other face to face…

ST – I went back to watch the June 9 episode of the Wai&Tsai show w/ Malcom Lane. There is absolutely no evidence of any problems at that time. He even mentions expecting to graduate in 4.5 years (another 3 semesters). I think that’s what the Tsaikos are recalling, thus adding to the suspense. But like al say, ’nuff said! We support Malcom Lane – the student-athlete. 😀

  198. whitey August 9, 2009 9:35 pm

d1 and brew, if you look at the satellite imagery for hawaii, boy are there a lot of bad weather passing south of us. i mean bad, cause they appear to be bigger than felicia.

I’m hot, I’m tired, I need to unpack, and apparently, I do have to go to work tomorrow. 😀

What really sucks is that while jm2375 has 1,200 pictures to sort through, I lost my camera on the TriMet line today. Decided to get off at Finnegan’s to get a puzzle to play with on the plane, and I realized the pocket where I was keeping my camera was empty. Before I could jump back in, the doors closed. I called and left a message with Lost and Found, but I doubt I’ll get that back. I didn’t think to keep contact info in there. I could care less about the camera, it was a cheap one, but I want my pictures. In particular, the FOOD pictures. 🙂

Looking at a few videos of practice my immediate impressions are that the players are executing their drills at a high tempo with a lot of intensity.Saw a lot of nice hitting the players were doing on the blocking/tackling sled. It was great to see them striking with a lot of nice technique and form. A few of the pass rushing drills by the DE seemed to show that they were really quick. Liked that spin move by 97.

I think when the coaches break down the film of Saturday’s practice they’d probably like what they’re seeing of how quick the DE are and how the players are striking the tackling sled. Don’t recall from the film which players standout as hitting the tackling sled the hardest, but some those hits..whoa.

    BIGHILOFAN, KAZZ & any other would-be “haters”….

Check post #191 – the “official word”. ENUFF SAID!

How u like them apples? You what they say about assuming folks.

Can we all just get along? Just because we all don’t agree, because we all don’t “suck up” and because some know more than others, doesn’t mean we should treat anybody with disrespect.

I’ve loved Hawaii football for over 26 years, but I’m not prepared to “suck up”. I got to call a spade a spade when I see it. Me, I’m highly concerned about the up coming season. We should all be, if we’re really calling ourselves “true” fans.

    Aloha one and all.

    babydaddymama,

on second thought, after musing over Brew#194, and hearing ST give us da official words,

hmmm … on da odda hand, imo gotta give ML his space. he’s one of us. he’s earned it. i wish he woulda stuck it out, cuz he’s good, but he’s got his reasons, so I gotta back him. and let him and da Warriors know, every one of them, that we got their backs no matter what !!!!!!!1!!!!1!!!!

    gotta share
i’m wuz upset wit dis particular govt agency in Hilo, cuz day bustin up guys… da guyz goin get off, an my rag is its costin dem mucho for provin what day could get for nuttin if da peeps did dare jobs right.
so i asked da wife, wat, i like bus up da xxx/&>, watcha tink?
an she tells me, is XXYOX doing good sometimes, an i says yes.
an she tells me, is xxx/&> doing good at least sometimes, an i says yes.

an she tells me, den let it go. unless you know da particular worker is totally evil, you gotta give dem da benefit of da doubt about intent.
i wuz tinkin of really slammin da agency cuz my constituents in da right, you know. and den i taut to myself, da wife is right. gotta give da team chance, cuz we’re all in dis life togedda.

its not da same ting as our earlier conversation, but it is da same ting, no? we support our Warriors, each and every one of them, right?

then we gotta talk like dat, support em. no tell da bradda his story is BS.

and when i see you face to face, i’ll say da same ting. Peace.

DrDoc is back home safely although the nasty weather in the eastern Pacific caused his flight to go north about 200 miles to avoid excess turbulence. That extended the flight time by about 45 minutes.

Don’t foget this Saturday’s Manoa Makeover at the Athletic Complex – lots of good works to do and plenty of food at noon. It will get hot so wear a hat and a lightweight shirt with long sleeves or bring a ton of sunscreen.

Hope everyone is safe & secure when the junk weather arrives. It may not be a hurricane anymore, but the winds are expected to be strong enough to rip off tree limbs and push over fences, not to mention disrupt power, phone, and cable service.

According to the NOAA website, two potential storms are forming in the Eastern Pacific and another one off the coast of Northwest Africa. Wouldn’t that wonderful – having to deal with really bad weather in two oceans?

    Happy Birthday Midnight and Margo!
    Welcome home, Dr. Doc!
Congrats CRW- now you can go see COLT (possibly)… speaking of which…

    http://www.warpathconfidential.com/?p=429

    COLT WATCH:

    The quarterback shuffle

“Ranking the Redskins quarterbacks is easy.

    1. Jason Campbell
    2. Todd Collins
    3. Colt Brennan
    4. Chase Daniel

What will it be in a month for the regular season?

    1. Jason Campbell
    2. Todd Collins
    3. Colt Brennan

As the Redskins ready for the preseason opener at Baltimore on Thursday, everyone senses Brennan might become No. 2. With a great preseason, it’s possible. But the reality is Collins gives the Redskins an experienced relief pitcher evidenced by his 4-0 finish in 2007. That bought Collins five more years in the league.

But here’s a possible wrinkle. Should Campbell get hurt, Collins might remain the reliever but Brennan with a good August could become the second starter. It’s a proven method for teams to keep someone who comes off the bench as the backup while move up the No. 3 if they’re good enough. That way, if No. 3 falters, the backup can come in for the quick lift.

But, this all depends on how well Brennan does against No. 2 and 3 defenses. He’s bound to look better. Brennan is a talent. He’ll probably start at some point, if not here then elsewhere.

As for Daniel — fans really love underdog quarterbacks in this town. He received a big ovation during fan day. Daniel has some talent, but not enough to crack the top three. Just a bad year for him to be behind a talented No. 3 like Brennan. Maybe the UFL will be his way back to the NFL.”

  226. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! August 10, 2009 2:31 am

    COLT WATCH:

    http://blog.redskins.com/2009/08/09/morning-practice-throwing-to-the-wrong-guys/

But backup QB Colt Brennan was concerned for a completely different set of reasons.

“Yeah, I’ve kinda been telling the DBs that I haven’t been picked off yet this training camp,” he said, “so this one was a little tricky for me.”

Apparently Brennan is offering a bounty of some kind to the first defensive back who intercepts one of his passes, which makes an interception drill problematic for him. “We haven’t really discussed the details yet, but it can’t be in a drill like today when we were forced to throw picks. It has to be in a live drill, either 1-on-1, 7-on-7, team … any of them. It can’t be any defensive carded stuff or else it’s not fair. If it’s a defensive drill, they’re expected to get the ball.”

As far as worrying that throwing to the wrong team creates bad habits, though … Brennan is singularly unconcerned. “Nah,” he says dismissively. “I mean, you don’t think about it. You’re just working on throwing it.”

  227. Garret August 10, 2009 4:24 am

    Feature article on Mat McBriar.

Nearly 10 months have passed since McBriar broke his right foot in the Cowboys overtime loss. This camp is about kicking off the rust and altering his booming approach to appease new special teams coach Joe DeCamillis.

Hang time takes precedence over distance.

Bill Parcells loved McBriar’s leg strength. The former Cowboys coach told him to kick the ball as far as he could. McBriar’s job was to punt. Parcells believed it was everyone else’s job to get to the ball.

McBriar was averaging a career-high 49 yards a punt when he was hurt six games into last season. X-rays after the game revealed nothing. But the pain was so great that McBriar woke up in the middle of the night convinced, “I’d be better just cutting the whole foot off.”
