Land of the raisin sun

Ah, we’re in foggy Fresno.

The Warriors arrive this afternoon, via four buses (with a stop in Bakersfield for burgers), and then will have a walk-through Β at Bulldog Stadium.

True, Keith Amemiya held the title of administrator for the UH Board of Regents, but he always will be associated with athletics.

As the Theo Epstein of local administrators, Amemiya was at his best at moneyball β€” finding ways to expand high school championships and raise $$$s for the sports. Most often, he and his wife were the first to contribute.

Amemiya, of course, will do well in the private sector. We wish him well.

Looks like Warriors will be Inn-n-Out’g., then, Mr. Tsai? Was kinda’ puzzled by Coach Chow’s comment about the previous Inn-n-Out comment (they weren’t on their way to Fresno at THAT time, right?).

  13. John Fitzgerald Byers November 2, 2012 7:51 am

Hmmm… are Bert Kobayashi and Keith Amemiya acquainted with each other? Both men made the right move to step away at this time.

“In many ways, the Kobayashis became Amemiya’s second set of parents after his own parents, Ron and Ellen, divorced when he was 10. And the Kobayashis never had a problem treating him like their own son. Following Amemiya’s sophomore year, for example, Bert Kobayashi made the decision to pull him out of Kaiser High School and enroll him at Punahou. And when Amemiya wondered aloud how he would pay for tuition, the elder Kobayashi told him not to worry about it.

But to Bert Kobayashi’s credit, he never allowed Amemiya to get spoiled with life on β€œEasy Street.” Upon graduating from Punahou, Amemiya was told that he needed to β€œbegin earning his own keep.” That meant leaving the comfy confines of the Kobayashis’ home in Kuliouou so that he could find a place of his own and a job.

β€œBert and Harriet have always been two of the driving forces in my life,” Amemiya says. β€œThey not only took me into their home and provided for me financially, but they taught me values that I try to live by today, values such as hard work, integrity, compassion and community service.

β€œAnd they were real big on helping out other people, like myself. In fact, that’s sort of the reason why I got into my current job. I saw this as an opportunity to not only do something that I love, but to also give back to the community. Hopefully, I’m doing something that helps make our youths’ lives just a little bit better.”

A business major at UH, Amemiya wound up gravitating toward law in large part because β€œeveryone I know, including my dad, my brother, Bert Kobayashi and Chris Kobayashi, are attorneys.” He graduated from the William S. Richardson School of Law in 1990, then went on to join two local firms, where he worked for the next eight years specializing in commercial litigation.”

  14. mikey November 2, 2012 7:55 am

Temple needs 6 wins to go to a bowl game but after looking at Temple schedule that are left it will be a iffy. with game left to play at Louisville this week (lose), Cincinnati next week (lose), Syracuse (lose) and at Army as the only other sure win will get them only 5 wins and not enough to go to a bowl game as I see it.

Temple will have to win the final 3 games to get 6-6 record.

They are looking to get to us automatic win in Hawaii to a bowl game.

  15. Chicken Grease November 2, 2012 7:56 am

Good luck to Amemiya. Campaign to get him in as athletic Director; why does a Grease get the feeling that those same folk advocating for Donovan’s return want Amemiya in the job?

    Set the wheels . . . in motion. πŸ˜‰

  16. mikey November 2, 2012 8:00 am

The only thing close to Temple stats is they are 120th in passing with 132.7 yard Scoring at 23.1 points to Warriors at 105th place with 183.4 yards 21.7 points a game.

It will be sweet if we can upset them at home to end the season.

  17. John Fitzgerald Byers November 2, 2012 8:03 am

Amemiya, for all his generosity and hard work in the past doesnt deserve to be punished by being the AD for the UH with the kind of leaders that have been in charge for decades.

  18. LizKauai November 2, 2012 8:13 am

    Keith Amemiya- MAHALO!

    Happy ALOHA FRIDAY!

  19. LizKauai November 2, 2012 8:15 am

As for the position of AD… I love Jim Donovan.

But like the position of QB of the Warriors, the AD will have to take the hits and the verbal hits from bystanders and work in a system that needs to rebuild….

Dunno if one person can fix the system.

  20. (Jesse) James November 2, 2012 8:16 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

    #17 John Fitzgerald Byers:

Keith Amemiya is not the type that would be pushed around!

It is true if he were to be the AD, that he would have a lot of unsavory characters that he would have to be associated with in the upper campus.

While he does not (as far as I know) the contacts and relationships with ADs on the Mainland, he always can get people that do – and that will protect his back.

  22. Warrior Dave November 2, 2012 8:20 am

    ST,

You and Ferd have a safe journey and return.

I thought I heard Coach Chow said no In & Out because their group too big? What a great deal for a cheese burger double-double, fries and unlimited soft drink for under $6. Can’t wait to go back for my fix soon.

Lastly, Keith Amemiya took high school sports to the next level. Big lost for UH but who can blame him. Hopefully one day he will re-emerge back in the Hawaii sports world. We need visionaries like him.

  23. (Jesse) James November 2, 2012 8:21 am

  25. madeinhawaii November 2, 2012 8:22 am

For the same salary can they find a better AD for UH? Or will they have to offer considerably more for less?

  26. lowtone123 November 2, 2012 8:24 am

Keith Amemiya did a lot for high school athletics during his tenure as head of the HHSAA. I would like to see him in a leadership position at UH. That place needs his integrity and his willingness to do what in the best interest of all.

  27. John Fitzgerald Byers November 2, 2012 8:26 am

For all his accolades, amemiya is not an army. the UH needs an army of commonsense to fix the problems. Send seal team 6 and have them take out the terrorists.

Athletic Director? How about Keith Amemiya for MCR’s job?

  33. A-joe November 2, 2012 8:46 am

Contrary to what many believe, Fresno is a great college town. They’ve got a great fan base that really get into supporting their athletics program. Rob25 said it all along. She took us there and she was right. We had a great time there two years ago. (did help that we won too)

Mind you, Bulldog fans are just as passionate for their program as any other fan base. As we made our way to the stadium we heard the cat calls and corny references to luau feasts from fans BBQin and tailgating. Typically understood. I’ve heard worse stuff directed to us by kids and their moms at the LV games. What impressed me more was after the game. Fresno fans walked up to us, shook our hands, congratulated us on the win, wished us luck for the rest of the season, expressed their love for the rivalry. Very cordial and hospitable. They didn’t have to but, they did anyway.

  34. papajoe2 November 2, 2012 8:48 am

I can’t remember where I saw it but there was a college football team that wanted I&O burgers and it was delivered to them via this mobile I&O food truck thingy. They cooked it on the spot etc.

I’m not sure if that is how I&O managed to serve the team.

  41. Stephen Tsai November 2, 2012 9:06 am

Whoops. My bad. No In-N-Out Burger. I thought Chow was kidding, but, nope, they can’t handle that large a group.

So it’s on to Bakersfield for burgers.

Wouldn’t feel to sorry for the fellas. Nice buses. Well-stocked with food and (non-alcoholic) beverages.

Let’s get this show going. Rich2176 and I have a date with the blackjack table.

  42. LizKauai November 2, 2012 9:18 am

hateme- I&O have a fantastic food truck team. I experienced their food for the first time at the end of the Rose Parade in Pasadena. All the bands pass through several lines at the end of the parade and get hot, delicious food!

  43. jimmy the lock November 2, 2012 9:19 am

One more day. If no can wait then watch the OIA championships tonight.

Nice win by the Wahine last night.

…and rail going broke the city and county bank. Not like going get 100k+ riders going from Kapolei to town everyday and everyplace in between. Someone mentioned BART but no way the proposed route has the population density as the bay area to support and maintain rail costs.

Maybe I’m spoiled but I like drive to where I want to go. Not be stuck in a point to point transport and then have to transfer/walk/bike to my final destination. No can even catch rail to go directly to the SSC and watch the Wahine play.

Yeah yeah, many say other lines will be built, but by that time no mo money and most of us will be dead.

  44. LizKauai November 2, 2012 9:19 am

Hi to Rich2176 – and avoid being a “poor” ST!

  45. Bleed Green and White November 2, 2012 9:23 am

Why, oh why, please tell me why?

Why everybody gotta get all huhu about travel now?

So the coach takes 60 and not the 64 allowed, big whoop-dee-do!

It doesn’t say you HAVE to take 64!

If players get all salty because they neva go, then, well, respectfully, get better! Use it as motivation.

This ‘aint pee-wee, or PAL, where everybody HAS to play, it’s earn your way. Do it the way the coach wants it down, or sit. Tough love, it hurts sometimes, but eventually, it’ll make you better.

Then I read stuff about hand guns, got me boiling this morning…..

Who the hell made certain people king (or queen), giving them the right to tell people what they can and cannot do.

Are you kidding me. I got a gun, it’s my right. I don’t preach about, but I get all crazy when other DO preach about it.

I hear all the arguments, guns kill people blah blah blah….fact it, people kill people.

Okay, enough of that! Sorry, had to vent!

    Go Warriors!!!!

    GO WARRIOR ALUMNI!

    http://cfl.ca/article/owens-sets-new-cfl-record-for-combined-yardage

Canadian Football Hall of Fame player, Michael β€˜Pinball’ Clemons commented, β€œTrying to adequately reflect the magnitude of my admiration for Chad Owens is akin to trying to tackle him! Achieving this milestone wasn’t an β€˜if’, but an eventual reality. In fact, in his first season, my wife Diane said, β€˜He is going to be the one to break your record and you’re going to be the first person there to congratulate him.’ She’s right again! Poignantly, he has played through pain, injury and adversity, outworking both peers and opponents, while balancing a young family as an ever growing role model in Toronto and our greater country. It is my distinct honour to congratulate his amazing wife Rena, their three beautiful kids and one of the most exciting players in pro football history, at any position, in any era! Number 2, you are officially number 1 in our hearts and the record books!”

#45 I agree but that is what happens when the team is not playing well. Every detail is scrutinized with a negative spin to somehow prove a point that the coaches/players are clueless. Typical whiner behavior, they are who they are … it is a character trait that is hard for people to change …

The thing I find amusing is that these same people who like to criticize can’t take criticism in return…..

Yes. And that this football season is Chow’s first as a head coach and that he is of Chinese ancestry, this saying isa most relevant and pertinent to him.

Let the other “first year head coaches” have their game-winning fortune this season. Coach Chow goes for the substantive long-run.

  69. Pauoa Boy November 2, 2012 11:00 am

    #53,

Chad did have a chance to get back in the NFL with the New York Jets who wanted to bring him in for a look. It was during the lockout so Chad had to make a decision for his family. Do I risk waiting on the NFL to see if I get paid if I make it? Or do I sign a guaranteed 4-5 year contract and feed my family?

I know some Warrior fans don’t care about Manti because he didn’t stay home to play college football. However, if you believe that Manti deserves recognition, you can help by voting for him.

Here’s the website to vote for Manti for the Senior Class Award:

there was much hpye about red shirt QB from THE Ohio State who now plays on the “scout team”.

I personally have not seen him play, but it appears that he is heir apparent to the QB position next year with 2 years to play 2? some say he has a “rifle arm” – what about quick feet, time to release the ball, scrambling ability, accurate, can run?

unless the u-tube of current commit Zwahlen is bogus, here appears to be a “tall” QB ( 6′ 3″ ) – has a rifle of an arm – anchors the 2×400 track team (is this correct?) and can punt the ball a mile – well, ball appeared to travel about 65-70 yards in the air on the tape

if so, then UH’s future looks bright when this is added to all the current “red-shirts”, transfers, and current commits who will hopefully sign on LOI day.

my mind wanders so unsure if what I am “key boarding” is correct or a dream – dang, would be good to be 22 again! like the Everly Bros sang, “dream, dream, dream—–all I have to do is dream”

keith was smart to abandon the BOR, besides upper management at manoa, the BOR is a really dysfunctional body. many cannot reason and are mere rubber stamps. they let greenwood control them, when they should control her. they have shirked their duties, best to fire them all and get a new board.

  88. madeinhawaii November 2, 2012 12:19 pm

    A-House,

I’m looking at the QB situation with a lot of reservation. Graham has the size and height. Appears to have a strong arm and by the account of those who saw him practice, is pretty accurate. BUT, he hasn’t had much game time experience. Was a back up QB last season but didn’t play in any game, red-shirted the year before… played sparingly his senior year while recovering from an injury…. add this year and that’s 4 years away from any really meaningful game time experience. They also say he’s not a scrambler. Again, not a dual threat.

Ikaika Woolsey, on the other hand, is not tall at 6′, short for the prototypical Pro Set QB, has a strong arm, played last season in high school, and can scramble. Lead his high school team to a championship.

If you have not noticed by now, most posters on this board subscribe to the old adage that says, “if you don’t have anything nice to say, no say nothing at all.” As a result, any critique deemed “negative” will be met with great resistance.

  100. WarriorNY November 2, 2012 1:53 pm

    Mr. Grease,

I am glad they cancelled the marathon. Staten Island(where they start the marathon) has been hit so hard, so for any funds to go to the marathon instead of relief efforts was just going to be in bad taste… That being said, there probably wasnt going to be much of a difference if they held the marathon or not. But it just doesn’t look right to have it…

Family is struggling honestly. I got lots of family in areas still without power. But I don’t want to complain when others are doing much worse. Hopefully this weekend, things will come together… I’m confident it will…

  101. WarriorNY November 2, 2012 1:55 pm

    Mr. Grease,

For some reason, Oceanic isn’t doing online PPV for this game(as well as last week) that’s why I’m so frustrated…

    Shoko,

I don’t think I get that channel but I will look yet again…

  102. Shoko November 2, 2012 2:01 pm

I think the Oceanic PPV streaming is not available for away games. Thats what I noticed, anyway.

  103. Shoko November 2, 2012 2:03 pm

Of course, you could always try to hunt down an illegal stream.

  104. WarriorNY November 2, 2012 2:05 pm

The gas shortage is a serious problem… Lots of people trying to run generators including some in my family are either waiting in line for 3 hours or having to drive up to CT to get some gas…

But like I said, the storm didn’t hit me too hard(well besides my business), I hate to complain when others are suffering without heat, electricity and even worse loved ones…

  105. WarriorNY November 2, 2012 2:07 pm

    Shoko,

Honestly I tried to look for one last week but couldn’t find one..

  106. Chicken Grease November 2, 2012 2:08 pm

WarriorNY . . . oh. Your mention is the first I’ve heard the marathon being cancelled. Hear, hear, yeah . . . a marathon needs lots of fresh water, which many New Yorkers and New Jersians need. Can’t believe ALL those resources would’ve been there for the runners all over the world while needy NYers qould look on.

Where the heck were the Occupiers to protest the ongoing of the NY Marathon early on?

Hang in there. The nation’s w/ya! Keep us informed. People waiting in line for, what, 6 hour for gas and even that’s not guaranteed.

Yeah. As many “bundles” as Oceanic tries to sell, they’re pretty much TV-based and even then a Grease gets problems w/picture showing (not THAT often, but, enough to notice now that they have this new system). PPV works perfectly, though . . . especially when it comes to the TV ads during the UH games PPV (yeah, that happens here).

    # 93, BIK. Beef up ya’lls’ arguments, you, PB, others. Don’t get discouraged.

  107. WarriorNY November 2, 2012 2:09 pm

John Estes – still with Jaguars, he was “killing it” during training camp, was penciled to start, got hurt again, then placed on injured resevre.

  109. Shoko November 2, 2012 2:13 pm

    WNY,

Last week I read on the SportHawaii Forum that the CSU game was going to be streamed online, but when I checked the Oceanic website it didn’t list the game except the PPV TV option. If I remember correctly, only games I saw that were streamed was Nevada, Lamar and New Mexico.

I think the reason there wasn’t an illegal stream last week was because there wasn’t a high interest. Gotta have a guy that is willing to stream the game via P2P sharing for illegal streams.

  110. WarriorNY November 2, 2012 2:24 pm

    Mr. Grease,

Thanks for your constant concern. The first couple days weren’t so bad for me but the last couple days have been really tough. I run a heating oil company out here in NYC and the terminals ran out of oil yesterday… And so I’m trying to explain to families how we won’t be able to heat their homes. Homes already without electricity… It’s hard… But others have it much worse…

But I appreciate your thoughts… Ok, Im gonna stop venting…

  111. 3-Prong November 2, 2012 2:28 pm

I think that Oceanic does not want to undercut its higher priced PPV with a cheaper streaming option. They might be reducing the overall income stream if too many choose the cheaper alternative. Guys like WarriorNY suffer though.

  112. WarriorNY November 2, 2012 2:30 pm

  118. Chicken Grease November 2, 2012 2:44 pm

A Grease can’t stand the Oceanic TV ads. They make like they have the best customer service out there; they don’t. A Grease is usually on hold — listening to the worst Hawaiian music the whole while, mind you; you’d think w/Oceanic’s Music Choice channels, someone on hold would be easily able to choose what kind of music you want to listen to while on hold (read: press “1” for jazz, press “2” for arena rock, press “3” for ’80s lives on, etc.) — while waiting my turn for question. A recording comes up after a. Certain point asking if you want Oceanic to call you back, but, that’s only after hearing 2 or 3 “boo-hoo land was taken” tunes and other “not ready for top 40” island tunes.

Lately, a Grease has NOT gotten the right answer from them.

But, the UH PPV seems to work (a Grease has not been privy to those situations, incidentally, early on where a good chunk of the first part of the game didn’t manage to air — think Oceanic gave some kind of refund to viewers in such cases, to be fair).

  128. Pauoa Boy November 2, 2012 3:13 pm

    Bleed Green and White,

Got you, everything is opinion more or less but most times if I try to say something is based on a fact it usually is. Or if I say its the honest truth I can 9 times out of 10 back it up with a fact. If it’s not then I will try to find the reason to back up what I say or mean. If I’m wrong so be it. Still regardless I enjoy all the different sides to the story. People view things differently and yes the old adage of don’t say anything unless you have something nice to say is what most on here go by. I on the other hand, I’d rather hear what others have to say regardless if its right, wrong, good, bad, or ugly. It opens your mind to see things from a different perspective. Yes, it is true what Chicken Grease says when there is a respectful way of saying things and I admit if I feel like if someone wants to come at me personally then I will confront it head on respectfully or disrespectfully. Whether the discussion we have is civil or is on the verge of getting nawts, at least it always ends up being about Warrior football where it should be anyway. Don’t get me wrong we all family on here whether we like each other or not or like what each other says or not, again we all here for one purpose, talk Warrior Football!

Speaking of TV shows, a few weeks ago I started to watch “Vegas”, right after NCIS Los Angeles. CBS claims it’s the #1 hit show. Now, many of us have been to Vegas for UH football and vacation and knows what it looks like… but this show is set in late 1950’s (?).

Dennis Quaid is the uncomplicated sheriff of Clark County and the bad guy is a mob boss/manager of a hotel-casino. The mob boss would have you hit, but he’s kinda likeable and he has vision of the Vegas of today.

  142. Garret November 2, 2012 5:34 pm

    WarriorNY,

Oceanic does NOT have streaming rights to UH road games. The home team owns TV rights and the MWC does give UH the right to sell PPV TV rights for conference road games (then they take all of that money)…but the MWC owns the streaming rights.

One complaint that BYU had with the MWC was the lack of TV and streaming options for their fans to follow the game. At least Oceanic gets to show the game for free in Hawaii the next day, BYU didn’t get to do that on BYUTV.

UH will be in the MWC for the foreseeable future, so hopefully their policy will change. But my guess is that nothing will change until their next TV contract (which will also sell streaming rights) is done in 2016 or 2020.

The Big 12 lets all conference members stream their games. C-USA set up streaming for their entire conference. The WAC is with ESPN so they get ESPN GamePlan and ESPN3.com, plus the WAC TV network. The SEC and others have streaming. The Pac-12 and Big 10 have everything on TV. The MWC is pretty far behind the times and they don’t seem to care.

#96 funny that’s what i call him too. eventually someone is going to jump on one his floaters to the sidelines. that pass to the outside is nearly always good for 1 yard sometimes even 2 yards. gotta wonder why the coach keeps calling for that play.

  166. WarriorNY November 2, 2012 9:02 pm

    Eh Mr. Grease,

No let that comment get to your head, now.. Haha

Man! It’s the John Kamoku & Shaun Kagawa show here in Keaau. Two braddahs battling it out.

  169. gobows November 2, 2012 9:17 pm

parnaby struck out the side in the 1st, 2nd, & 3rd inning. 9 batters, 9k’s. UH over kumamoto 19-0 in 4 1/2 innings.

    KEKOA:

Are you connected with the Radford football team?

  171. madeinhawaii November 2, 2012 9:29 pm

I really like these international games (ie.. softball against Kumamoto)… I hope we have more in the future in more sports..

  172. Kevin November 2, 2012 9:44 pm

Nice gesture by the Wahine and coaching staff to present some “Omiyagi” to the Japanese team. A lei and something inside an Under Armour drawstring backpack.

They had a rough outting. Can tell they have never faced a pitcher like Parnaby before.

Parnaby and Carlos both credited with a perfect game tonight.

  173. Kevin November 2, 2012 9:50 pm

Wahine basketballer Diane Moore, a JUCO transfer who was born in Oakland, CA but then moved and lived most of her life in Nagoya, Japan came by and visited with the team from Kumamoto. Not sure if she knew people on the team or what.

    #172 Kevin:

Your impressions of the WSB team – please!

  175. Kevin November 2, 2012 9:59 pm

    Tom mui,

Still have a long way to go to see how the first unit gels and tonight against a much weaker team really doesnt show much.

Also Kumamoto started bunting real late in the game and our infielders never got challenged since Kaia blew past Kumamoto with ease. Kumamoto bunted against our second unit to no avail.

Keiki Carlos got one inning of work and more game time will help her a lot. Lots of MPI supporters out tonight to cheer her on.

Hopefully when we face Kumamoto tomorrow again, we will see Carlos and Kesterson play since throwing Kaia in against them doesnt prove anything unless he wants to test out her deeper range of pitches. Tonight she threw a lot of heat and risers. There wasnt a need to throw Kumamoto batters off balance since they couldnt touch her basic fastball stuff.

  176. Kevin November 2, 2012 10:03 pm

Also, Keiki got only one inning of work since the game ended sooner than it should have even with the mercy rule.

Expect to see Keiki Carlos get more work tomorrow since he is penciled in as the immediate 2nd pitcher. But Loie Kesterson should get some work tomorrow as well. We will need all three this year.

To know that you have two other pitchers behind you is a great confidence booster for your ace and when Kaia Parnaby gets in rhythm and is flowing without worry, not too many batters can hit her.

SteveM . . . A Grease watches Vegas. Pretty good. Heard was based on an actual situation in Vegas at the time (that Chiklis mobster’s and Quaid sheriff’s real life counterparts are now best friend something or somewhat). CBS should’ve placed this on their Showtime channel — to me, the situation laid out in Vegas warrants way more cursing and violence that can be shown in prime time, heh. Good show, though. 5-0 — which is just damned stupid, silly, and almost unwatchable at this point — should be more like this show.

    Mr. Grease,

Did you see my star wars post the other day?

First I gotta say, as much as I love breaking bad, Dexter is the show this year…

Yeah!!!!!! Breaking Bad. Ah. Have not seen Dexter yet. A Grease is all Homeland when it comes to Showtime channel.

Gomen, WarriorNY . . . haven’t found your Star Wars post, yet. Will keep looking, for sure. πŸ™‚

  187. Desert Rainbow November 3, 2012 3:50 am

Only 60 on the travel roster? Can someone explain how they can’t load 64 healthy bodies onto that airplane? Out of 85 (ish) scholarship players, I’m sure they want to preserve the redshirt year for some of them, but then throw in another 15-20 walk-ons…is Chow that inept that he can’t fill out a travel squad?

    Chicken Grease,

I was going to post about LucasFilm and Star Wars yesterday as well… I can’t wait for 2015! I haven’t been this excited about Star Wars since before I saw Episode 1… I just wonder who is going to take the helm as director… I think Joss Whedon (Firefly/Serenity, The Avengers) would have been PERFECT! But he’ll be busy with The Avengers 2…

I can’t wait to see how Disney incorporates more Star Wars attractions at the Disney parks as well…

Can’t wait to see the Star Wars/Avengers crossover film; would be # 1 at the box office for months!!!! πŸ˜‰ Heh.

Disney should get Tarantino to direct a Star Wars movie!

  189. Slugger November 3, 2012 4:39 am

    Kevin,

Thanks for the Softball review. Couldn’t make the game; worked too late & came home tired. See you guys today.

    GO WARRIORS!!! Trash Fresno!

    Tom ~

Are you asking about my ties to Radford football because of the name on the sports facilities? Yes, that’s in memory of my Uncle Bill. First Speaker of the House of Represetatives, State of Hawaii.

Other than that, they allow me to take out my own trash as I exit the school grounds.
