Knock, knock …

A week after competing in a mini camp in Florida, former UH quarterback Bryant Moniz is awaiting word on whether he will be invited to a Canadian Football League training camp.

Moniz’s last game was in August 2012, when he suffered a torn MCL while playing for the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League. Moniz said he is completely healed and in “top shape.”

“I’m still chasing the dream,” Moniz said. “They can close the door once, twice, three times … I’m going to keep knocking.”

From yesterday’s blog: Albertson’s. Around 15 years ago, I took a team of another sport to Boise to compete in a tournament. I’ve never heard of Albertson’s before and was shocked when we went there to buy snacks for our team. What stands out to me was the price of milk at a time when Hawaii was just introducing the gallon milk, was $1.76 a gallon there. In Hawaii, it was over $6, closer to 7. Also, I remember the price for 12 fried chicken thighs was either $4.99 or $2.99 or something ridiculously low by Hawaii standards.

  6. A-House May 21, 2014 8:07 am

I believe Albertson is a family owned nationwide company and they are closely tied to Boise State – have been for years and a major contributor to that school.

  7. A-House May 21, 2014 8:23 am

unfortunately for UH, there is NO large, nationwide company in Hawaii to seek financial aid.

Oregon has Nike and Oklahoma St/SMU has that mulit-billionaire – forgot his name

    Good morning Tsaikos!

    Best wishes to Mr. Moniz!

Mr. A-house and others – Albertson’s is in the process of buying Safeway. They will have a Hawaii presence sometime in the future.

Does the BPBE (Bernice Pauahi Bishop Estate) count? They pretty Big.

  10. al May 21, 2014 8:41 am

albertson’s was sold to its competitor in 2006.
the new owners are now acquiring safeway stores by the end of the year.

good thing you can shop at the commisary.

  11. NotNasti May 21, 2014 8:42 am

A-House, it’s too bad none of us here are multi-billionares. I KNOW any one of us would take care of the home team if we could (in that way).

  12. PurpleMaple May 21, 2014 8:43 am

Th missing word is partnership. While UH Athletics is very successful in partnering with corporate sponsors (maybe it should be reversed – Corporate sponsors have successfully partnered with UH Athletics), there is an obvious failure in a clear partnership with or by the State – both at the executive and legislative branches. It needs to start there. Since it has not happened, a change in leadership is needed.

  13. al May 21, 2014 8:58 am

until our football team becomes a household name, and i am referring to the limitations of our isolated island state, we won’t be attracting any big time monies.

looking east, the orient, might suit our efforts in the future. bj’s petition to seek an annual game in japan is a great start. surely, he may not have been the one who first dreamt the vision (jj ?) but he is spearheading a bonafide effort to get us there.

  14. al May 21, 2014 9:08 am

    fix the product first.

the state needs to get off its dime. everytime there is a nationally broadcasted game it serves as the largest and longest commercial for our main product tourism. state money needs to be pumped in to uhad.

why shouldn’t money be poured in by the hawaii visitors bureau.
    who reaps the expisure?
every business in hawaii does. tourism is where every dollar evolves from.

    (note: sans the military’s presence)

it also serves as one heck of a recruiting tool as well.
but, back to square one; fix the product.

  15. boolakanaka May 21, 2014 9:12 am

A house–Phil Knight and Boone Pickens. And unless, there is some defined benefit related to the education/advancement of native Hawaiian youth, KSBE operates under a fairly tight mission. That said, although recent evaluations of their assets are placed in the 13-15 billion range, realistically, its probably closer to 17-18 billion, as they have 1/3 or so their assets in Hawai’i land holdings, and the book value has not been updated in over 10 years.

  16. Ipu Man May 21, 2014 9:19 am

Bryant Moniz reflects the go for it dream of all tsaikos and fellow children of Hawaii.

  17. Andrew May 21, 2014 9:20 am

I find it hard to believe that with the investigation going this long that it is going to end with no penalties or consequences at all. It really was a tough situation for Ben Jay though. Already the investigation hurts recruiting since recruits but even more so it would hurt if it was known that Gib’s future was in doubt. However if they just sign him right away and then there are major sanctions imposed by the NCAA and the staff was at fault, then they are stuck with a coach with a fresh new contract that would be very tough to buy out.

  18. papajoe2 May 21, 2014 9:35 am

#18 Andrew, I could be mistaken but I think (or hope) that if Gib broke the rules, then he could be fired. I don’t think they need to buy out his contract, but then again, this is UH and they may “settle” for a huge amount.

  19. gobows May 21, 2014 9:49 am

    19

Based on past practice, the UH has the dumbest legal counsel that ever existed. Status quo. That will never change. Chalk that one up as a hawaii tradition.

    Another hawaii tradition…freakin lousy construction.

Vertigo could be an inner ear problem. See a doctor. There are multiple reasons that could be causing the problem, some are very serious.

  31. Manoa Mist May 21, 2014 11:27 am

I used to tease folks who had vertigo until I got it myself. Not fun. Could hardly stand, got nausea. Usually related to inner ear problems.
    As to value of KS:
“As of June 30, 2013, the overall fair value of the Kamehameha Schools
endowment was $10.1 billion. The Consolidated Balance Sheet shows
total assets to be $7.7 billion; it records real estate at cost rather than fair
market value, and includes non-endowment assets such as educational,
    agricultural and conservation assets.”
KS does support a number of UH football players who are on need-based financial aid support for college.
UH needs someone like the Oracle billionaire on Lanai to help support them. If he can’t do that, then he should at least help the Lanai sports teams with their travel challenges. If he can’t do that, if he gotta spend on his money on fancy yachts and give nothing to the community, then he not so good.

  32. SteveM May 21, 2014 11:31 am

    Good morning everyone!

Best wishes and luck to Bryant Moniz!

    RE: #27
ST — if you are feeling faint when you stand up after sitting for a while, it could be –believe it or not– low blood pressure. My doc said that as a diabetic, my nerves aren’t clamping the leg veins enough when I stand, so the blood drains down too fast.

He said I have to raise my blood pressure. How? Eating my favorite shoyu and drive-inn foods. I had been eating too healthy. 🙄 Yup, no problem since January….

  33. Abunai May 21, 2014 11:38 am

No real cure for it… Only pills that help but that’s all.. Nothing you can really do….

  34. boolakanaka May 21, 2014 12:08 pm

    32. Manoa Mist, you are correct, many folks that I speak to about their land assets say that they are undervalued by 30-40%. Again, they got those currently pegged at book value and not market.

  35. boolakanaka May 21, 2014 12:17 pm

And again, I reiterate you got to choose “super boosters” with long historical ties to Hawai’i. For Larry Ellison it would be straight-out philanthropy–and I don’t see that happening. I see him being a majority owner of a NFL Los Angeles franchise before he does anything in Hawai’i.

If you go part the usual suspects of the Punahou mafia, e.g SC and Pierre, the two folks that I think have a much better vested interest are, Duncan MacNaughton. Over the past few decades, MacNaughton has had a hand in developing more than 3 million square feet of retail and residential property in Hawaii. Major projects have included Waikele Center, Costco and Pali Momi Hospital. Through his company, The MacNaughton Group, he has also profited as the development partner for big-box stores such as Target and Costco, and has brought major retailers to Hawaii, including Starbucks, Jamba Juice and Blockbuster. In 2006, Starbucks bought out the local ownership’s stake in the 54-store Hawaii chain. The price wasn’t released, but, in 2004, Starbucks officials acknowledged Hawaii’s per store earnings of $1 million a year were the highest in the country.

And the other person I would target is Richard Gushman. In 2007, Gushman’s company, DGM, completed the development of the $100 million Waikiki Beach Walk project. in partnership with Outrigger Enterprises. For the one-time partner, and frequent collaborator with Duncan MacNaughton, that’s just a drop in the bucket. In fact, Gushman has developed everything from single-family homes, to high-rise condos, to industrial and retail projects. He has also managed a $250 million mortgage business.

They both have staying power, history, and liquidity. But, just my lousy 2 cents.

  36. Drink Water May 21, 2014 12:28 pm

I had vertigo and had to drink a lot of water during the 24 hours, especially during the summer and after long hours in the sun. And I have a schedule because I am a senior and

  38. A-House May 21, 2014 12:40 pm

good point bout KSBE – if they will make a hefty donation to the Hawaiian Department at UH, then UH could use the “budgeted” amount for other programs – especially UH sports!

  39. st. anthony trojan May 21, 2014 12:43 pm

Does ne tsaiko here really believe…that if UH was given as a gift…of one billion dollars
that they would use it …wisely…judiciously…? ?

If so….I know sum one on maui that has some ocean front property on haleakala
that he is willing to let go for very cheeeeep.

Maybe that is why the full potential of our university is lacking in respect from our community.

    IMUA WARRIORS…N MR. MONIZ ALSO…..

  40. A-House May 21, 2014 12:44 pm

agree with al that tourism authority should make a donation to cover the travel expenses for all UH sports – coming or going

can they afford $6,000,000 each year? are they willing to include that in their budget?

with the highest room rates for the US, surely it is worth consideration!

also, that Legislature MUST realize that tourism brings “boku” $$$ into the State treasury via taxes from hotel rooms, rental vehicles, buses, merchandise/gifts, etc.

  41. A-House May 21, 2014 12:46 pm

    #18:

include a breakaway clause that if MBB staff was at fault and Gib must go, then this is considered “for cause” and no payment will be paid for his departure.

  42. nutmegger May 21, 2014 12:49 pm

Seems like a chicken and egg kind of thing. UH needs money to develop successful athletic teams but needs successful athletic teams to raise money.

Need to get the Asian tourist money. How about tie in a sumo tourney with a football game during the marathon and get JAL to promote it? I don’t know the sumo schedule, but it might work out. I bet some of the O-line would take a shot at knocking a Sumotori out of the ring.

Also if BJ wants to have a game in Asia, why not in Australia or New Zealand? Rugby or Australian rules football would be a good recruiting target. Have an exhibition Australian rules game in Aloha Stadium in exchange. Do they have college teams?

  43. al May 21, 2014 12:49 pm

40…i would give ben jay a shot at stewarding that amount wisely.

  44. A-House May 21, 2014 12:58 pm

I volunteer, for free, to handle the $1 billion.

first and foremost , it to put cash away that will generate significant daily return – no, not in a savings account!

that’s probably the worst place to put your extra cash.

second, decide, by %, who get what – ie,60% upper campus and 40% lower campus.

third, solicit a prioritized list from both campuses – do a “due process” review and reset the list

whatever is left over I keep – that should amount to “zero”.

  45. Rite80 May 21, 2014 1:22 pm

No one has a good handle on vertigo. While some manipulation from trained hands could help many patients are untreatable. Fortunately most of the time vertigo goes away after a few days up to a few months with no after effects. For some though it never goes away completely.

  46. jiminycricket May 21, 2014 1:30 pm

Temporary relief; soft drinks with caffeine and carbonation like colas, sprite, etc. It doesn’t cure it, but it seems to help a little.
Turn head to side and hold like stretching for max 25 seconds. Loosens muscles to increase blood flow to the head.

I initially got my vertigo from dehydration. Stay hydrated.
The pills did not work for me.

  47. st. anthony trojan May 21, 2014 1:31 pm

    HE HE good one house…lol

  48. Kris May 21, 2014 1:38 pm

That is a great attitude to have. Bravo, Mr. Moniz.

  49. Rite80 May 21, 2014 1:39 pm

Additional funds will help but it won’t cure being 2,500 miles in the middle of nowhere. Miano had it right when he said it’s about creating a brand, the University of Hawaii brand. JJ began creating that brand which at this point is non-existent due to small picture leadership at all levels in the athletic department. It’s not just about winning, it’s about creating a charismatic program which strikes at the emotions. Only guy there that is doing it now is Dave Shoji. I think Coolen has a bit of it. Wade understands it but is in a dying sport. Perhaps Laura Beeman could build her program into one. Would like to hear who others think have it.

  50. st. anthony trojan May 21, 2014 1:48 pm

    # 40 al….I would give him a shot also….even with all my ‘criticism’ of him on here many times over…but with the caveat….he has final n only say….n he hire a ‘experienced marketing manager’
to fill the stadium….stanley…murakami…’kala’ problems be gone…

I truly believe he is being hand strapped… (light bulb-name change….he had 2 eat crow)…..I think he has the smarts 4 that n experience….but seems to me sort of a glorified mr. Yee with title desk n pay……

    nutmegger.. good idea….in same vain…bring our sumitori home for 1st game….n Jesse K. also…
would scare the heebe jeebies out of the washington captains…he he he

  51. st. anthony trojan May 21, 2014 1:59 pm

Rite 80…Miano n jj are spot-on….you create brand with a decent product…n MARKETING….which there is ZERO marketing experience up there now. Product (are teams) seems to me, ne way improving…n with boutique in july…is going forward….

  52. nutmegger May 21, 2014 2:29 pm

St. Anthony Trojan – Jesse Kuhaulua, Chad Rowan, Saleva’a Atisanoe would be an intimidating group to welcome Washington.

I could see selling Japanese marathoners tickets to a UH game and a sumo tournament (got to buy both) At the sumo could have some demo bouts with the O-line/D-line. Who knows if they don’t get picked up by the NFL could have a future as a sumotori.

  53. Last Call May 21, 2014 2:37 pm

  54. st. anthony trojan May 21, 2014 2:41 pm

    dont 4 get Fiamalu Penitani…yea…

what you say would be very entertaining for fans…

that is the missing ingredient in the marketing dept…

they dont entertain fans n make it an ‘experience’…

they want your money..n give you the least in return…

n they could get them all for FREE if they would only ask…

Hawaiians say ‘pakiki head’ up there UHAD…

  55. islandman May 21, 2014 2:45 pm

    27. See a doctor as another suggested, he/she may be able to help. Sometimes they give something like dramamine, which is also used for airplane motion sickness etc. He can give you some other instructions on what to do.

  56. nutmegger May 21, 2014 2:46 pm

Forgot Fiamalu, oops. Long time ago I went to a sumo tourney at Blaisdell (maybe late 70s), it was packed with locals and Japanese visitors. The tourists came to Hawaii so they could get photos with their favorite sumotori.

  57. st. anthony trojan May 21, 2014 2:53 pm

yea…bet if they were ‘celebrity’ capts…many more would flock there included buses from waikiki
    filled with tourist from japan…

sorry you have to good an idea…. he he have to talk to attorneys first…he he he

  58. nutmegger May 21, 2014 3:00 pm

Yeah, UH may frown upon risking linemen challenging a sumotori. NCAA may also have issues.

  59. st. anthony trojan May 21, 2014 3:11 pm

but be fun to have them here…especially jesse….he getting old…he needs to go back to maui one last time with family….could all be done on same trip..

  60. nutmegger May 21, 2014 3:19 pm

JAL pays airfare, Outrigger provides hotel room, Hawaii tourism authority provides transportation – UH football sells tickets. All good.

    fertile mind n think big

hey whitey …what is that dudes name…me can go hotel look him…? ?

  63. oldtimer808 May 21, 2014 4:17 pm

Hello great topic about marketing of the University of Hawaii Athletics. I whole heartily agree that our UH has no clue on how to market their athletic programs. It will take someone with vision and creativity. Unfortunately our system ties the hands of anyone trying to shake up the system. Everyone on the blog has made great points on the problems with the system and culture at the UH. There are many of you that have come up with out of the box ideas that a good marketing department would love to brain storm and put all the right matrix in place. Don’t hold your breath with our marketing department…clueless.

  64. oldtimer808 May 21, 2014 4:25 pm

Another point is that we are missing the boat with the Asian market big time. The PAC 12 has recognized this market and working on a target plan. We need a comprehensive marketing plan to promote the University of Hawaii as the home team of the Pacific. The Hawaii Tourism Authority should partner up with the University of Hawaii as part of the comprehensive plan. We cannot continue to piece meal any marketing by the UHAD and be successful. I think the first order of business is to change the culture in the UH system that handicaps our ability to have a sustainable and effective voice to market our brand.

  65. nutmegger May 21, 2014 4:33 pm

I agree. This blog has more ideas in a single day then UH has had all year. I think if comes from everyone’s passion for success.

  66. nutmegger May 21, 2014 4:34 pm

  74. oldtimer808 May 21, 2014 4:52 pm

You’re right #70 but you’re also wrong because this is a blog and not the marketing department and the function of a blog is to express concerns, ideas and hope. Yes you are right that ideas without action/implementation is just as good as no ideas but ideas have to start somewhere and if ideas get picked up by those in authority that those ideas have a chance. Consider this as a brain storming session with no regard whether an idea is good or bad but in the end an idea becomes more than an idea.

  75. wilfred yamasawa May 21, 2014 4:57 pm

Have a international male/ female hula fest at the Stan Sherif that includes a cultural awareness program. And , oh yeah market the athletic program as an add on.
There should be a connection to our pass and a funnel to our future. Japan has a world class volleyball program , so does China we should bring them here also Japan has a budding football interest we should nuture that. do work shops with the great poly’s we have here. They can get some of these things in the Pac 12
but what Hawaii has in abundance and nobody else has is the culture of Aloha. We should work all of that into the mix.

  76. st. anthony trojan May 21, 2014 4:59 pm

my god….san antonio is really kicking butt huh…

  77. oldtimer808 May 21, 2014 5:01 pm

You know when I think of the system, I think of our State being run on the old boy network. It has become corrupt and ineffective. There is just too much waste within the system and state workers have no incentive to be effective and sensitive to the needs of the public. We have to look at the total picture because the flaw in the UHAD system is just part of and symbolic of the problems that continue today.

  78. oldtimer808 May 21, 2014 5:06 pm

  81. nutmegger May 21, 2014 5:50 pm

I like the hula fest idea, but should be associated to a sport/sports. Hawaii Tourism Authority should work with UHAD on the volleyball connection with Japan/China. Same with a nascent Japan football program – I think beyond a training program there needs to be a general education program to create an audience.

When I was at UH one of my best friends was from Japan, he didn’t understand football – he thought it was just a bunch of guys running into each other. With my limited knowledge i explained the tactical aspect of the ground and air game and the problem of defending each. He had a better appreciation for the sport – seeing that it took more than brute force to succeed.

  82. Ipu Man May 21, 2014 6:54 pm

Nutmegger, you hit it on the head, “It takes more than brute force to succeed.” That’s why JJ was so successful here. But you’ve got to have soap in the shower, too…

  83. whitey May 21, 2014 6:57 pm

    trojan, sent text to number.

  84. nutmegger May 21, 2014 7:31 pm

I wouldn’t have expected your conduct to be anything less! But there is a difference in having respect for authority and respect for a person. I’ll always have the utmost respect for rank and position, but that doesn’t mean I have to have any personal respect for the person in that position or rank.

Oldtimer, way to throw everyone under the bus. It’s all about perception, and yours is not an uncommon one. The “old boy” network was more prevalent with the previous administration. We had Budget and Finance director overseeing a multi-billion dollar budget without a 4 year degree. The new budget director came in and refinanced our notes to a lower interest rate which resulted in savings equal to the deficit accumulated under the previous administration. The turnaround took only one year. If anything, this guy (Kalbert Young) should be the comptroller of the UH system. The new ERS funds manager has presided over the largest amount of cash reserves in ERS history. It’s easy to throw stones at people without any facts to back it up. The current administration’s downfall may be it’s inability to curry favor from the worker’s unions and poor public relations personnel.

big surprise here…honolulu is the 2nd most expensive place to live in the USA…nyc 1st, sf 3rd.

Paradise isn’t lost; it’s just really expensive. Sitting in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, Hawaii offers miles of beautiful beaches and a yearlong summer to its masses of tourists and well-heeled residents. But the state’s remoteness also means paying a premium for just about everything. Housing expenses in the state capital are about 2.6 times what’s typical for the rest of the U.S. And utilities, groceries and transportation cost 71.5%, 55.2% and 26.9% above average, respectively—each ranking as the highest on this list. More specifically, gasoline costs 21.7% more than average, and a dozen eggs cost 87.3% more. One winning low number for Honolulu: The unemployment rate is just 4.0%, the nadir of all our expensive cities.

with more and more people going solar, expect heco to raise the rates to recoup loss revenue.

#90 Mahalo for your great input but I wasn’t trying to throw everyone under the bus. If my words hit a cord that’s great because this allows the facts to be brought out. I’m sure the individuals who have helped worked very hard to over come the generational culture that prevails within the system. It is not my intention to be negative and throw everyone under the bus but to have the kind of dialog to look at the total picture and make the necessary hard changes to move us forward. Look I’m just an old dog that loved the territorial days when I was just a kid and have seen the changes good and bad over the years. I would like to see the University of Hawaii Athletic department be autonomous and be able to function within the guidelines set forth by the athletic department. How can you be successful as a business when you have too many heads trying to run the business?

  92. NotNasti May 21, 2014 11:40 pm

Oldtimer, with your views on autonomy, I agree 100%. People (public, legislators, exec. branch, etc.) need to realize that UH, including our Athletic Department, should be the crown jewel of our state. It’s not cheap, but essential. They need to stop nitpicking. With two college-aged children, I have visited 14 universities, from Washington to California. State schools such as UW and the UC schools ARE the crown jewels of their respective states. They tell everyone, “this is the best we have to offer.” Unfortunately, as you drive up University Avenue and hit Dole Street, a similar message is not conveyed. Bachman Hall, as an administration building should be replaced. One of our two libraries (Sinclair) is not even air conditioned, a problem which is exacerbated by having a foul smelling tree growing just outside the front entrance (a cruel joke from the country that donated the tree).

  103. whitey May 22, 2014 6:11 am

your #2 flight problems with Hawaiian is a continuing saga of how their services is slowly turning their friends and customers to look for alternatives.

  104. A-House May 22, 2014 7:39 am

so far, we have not experienced any flight delays for the Hawaiian 1:50 am departure.

how ever, I believe their service sucks and looking for a new carrier to provide a direct flight from Hnl to LV and back

then, “jump ship” to the new carrier – maybe Southwest Airlines?

  105. Last Call May 22, 2014 7:57 am

I no longer use Hawaiian because they have turned into a greedy pig with lousy service.

#94 I went with my child to the college of her choice in mid-America. This institution, like UH is a land grant, public institution. The similarities end there.

The college is often time mistaken to be a private one as the educational experience of its students, judging by my child’s experience, is top notch. The way they treat their students is unbelievable and their campus is simply impressive. My child also applied to UH and was treated like “a number”; the attitude was come if you like but we’re not really interested.

The institution of choice called, her, spoke with us, had a graduate from that institution contact us and arranged to meet with us to give us a perspective of the institution. Once the choice to attend was made, the school coordinated classes, dorm accommodations and assigned an adviser to assist as needed.

UH is simply average at best. This is sad as it could be the gem of the State and the Pacific, yet somehow it manages to remain the same.

I am a graduate of UH, but given the superior treatment, education and experience that the mid-western institution gave my child, I have over the years chosen to respond positive to their request for support.

  107. Ipu Man May 22, 2014 8:14 am

And positive support for ST. I pray for fast healing and lots of rest. Amen.

  108. nutmegger May 22, 2014 8:28 am

    Is ST ok?

  109. Ipu Man May 22, 2014 8:34 am

Don’t really know. But vertigo knocked me out for about three days once.

  110. Ipu Man May 22, 2014 8:37 am

Once you get it, you need help just to get from bed to the bathroom…
A comfy pillow and sleep is best.

  111. Ipu Man May 22, 2014 8:40 am

Once read that the military developed a biological weapon similar to vertigo adding uncontrolled runs. Very effective in stopping enemy troops I imagine. Maybe testing it on ST.

  112. nutmegger May 22, 2014 8:40 am

Sending positive vibes to ST. Hope all is well.

  113. Ipu Man May 22, 2014 8:41 am

Paul McCartney had to cancel his Japan and Korea tour due to some virus he caught.
    Hmmmmm….

  114. nutmegger May 22, 2014 8:42 am

There are few things worse than having the runs, but being too dizzy to make it to the toilet. I can tell attest to that from experience.

  115. nutmegger May 22, 2014 8:43 am

    delete ‘tell’

  116. Ipu Man May 22, 2014 8:46 am

Maybe put it in the opposing football team’s gator aide would not be nice but could happen…

So when teams are on the road, they should bring their water and gaide with them and not kiss strange girls.
