A week after competing in a mini camp in Florida, former UH quarterback Bryant Moniz is awaiting word on whether he will be invited to a Canadian Football League training camp.
Moniz’s last game was in August 2012, when he suffered a torn MCL while playing for the Georgia Force of the Arena Football League. Moniz said he is completely healed and in “top shape.”
“I’m still chasing the dream,” Moniz said. “They can close the door once, twice, three times … I’m going to keep knocking.”

From yesterday’s blog: Albertson’s. Around 15 years ago, I took a team of another sport to Boise to compete in a tournament. I’ve never heard of Albertson’s before and was shocked when we went there to buy snacks for our team. What stands out to me was the price of milk at a time when Hawaii was just introducing the gallon milk, was $1.76 a gallon there. In Hawaii, it was over $6, closer to 7. Also, I remember the price for 12 fried chicken thighs was either $4.99 or $2.99 or something ridiculously low by Hawaii standards.
I believe Albertson is a family owned nationwide company and they are closely tied to Boise State – have been for years and a major contributor to that school.
unfortunately for UH, there is NO large, nationwide company in Hawaii to seek financial aid.

Th missing word is partnership. While UH Athletics is very successful in partnering with corporate sponsors (maybe it should be reversed – Corporate sponsors have successfully partnered with UH Athletics), there is an obvious failure in a clear partnership with or by the State – both at the executive and legislative branches. It needs to start there. Since it has not happened, a change in leadership is needed.

That said, although recent evaluations of their assets are placed in the 13-15 billion range, realistically, its probably closer to 17-18 billion, as they have 1/3 or so their assets in Hawai’i land holdings, and the book value has not been updated in over 10 years.

I find it hard to believe that with the investigation going this long that it is going to end with no penalties or consequences at all. It really was a tough situation for Ben Jay though. Already the investigation hurts recruiting since recruits but even more so it would hurt if it was known that Gib’s future was in doubt. However if they just sign him right away and then there are major sanctions imposed by the NCAA and the staff was at fault, then they are stuck with a coach with a fresh new contract that would be very tough to buy out.
#18 Andrew, I could be mistaken but I think (or hope) that if Gib broke the rules, then he could be fired. I don’t think they need to buy out his contract, but then again, this is UH and they may “settle” for a huge amount.

Vertigo could be an inner ear problem. See a doctor. There are multiple reasons that could be causing the problem, some are very serious.
I used to tease folks who had vertigo until I got it myself. Not fun. Could hardly stand, got nausea. Usually related to inner ear problems.
As to value of KS:

If he can’t do that, if he gotta spend on his money on fancy yachts and give nothing to the community, then he not so good.

ST — if you are feeling faint when you stand up after sitting for a while, it could be –believe it or not– low blood pressure. My doc said that as a diabetic, my nerves aren’t clamping the leg veins enough when I stand, so the blood drains down too fast.
He said I have to raise my blood pressure. How? Eating my favorite shoyu and drive-inn foods. I had been eating too healthy. 🙄 Yup, no problem since January….
No real cure for it… Only pills that help but that’s all.. Nothing you can really do….

And again, I reiterate you got to choose “super boosters” with long historical ties to Hawai’i. For Larry Ellison it would be straight-out philanthropy–and I don’t see that happening. I see him being a majority owner of a NFL Los Angeles franchise before he does anything in Hawai’i.
If you go part the usual suspects of the Punahou mafia, e.g SC and Pierre, the two folks that I think have a much better vested interest are, Duncan MacNaughton. Over the past few decades, MacNaughton has had a hand in developing more than 3 million square feet of retail and residential property in Hawaii. Major projects have included Waikele Center, Costco and Pali Momi Hospital. Through his company, The MacNaughton Group, he has also profited as the development partner for big-box stores such as Target and Costco, and has brought major retailers to Hawaii, including Starbucks, Jamba Juice and Blockbuster. In 2006, Starbucks bought out the local ownership’s stake in the 54-store Hawaii chain. The price wasn’t released, but, in 2004, Starbucks officials acknowledged Hawaii’s per store earnings of $1 million a year were the highest in the country.
And the other person I would target is Richard Gushman. In 2007, Gushman’s company, DGM, completed the development of the $100 million Waikiki Beach Walk project. in partnership with Outrigger Enterprises. For the one-time partner, and frequent collaborator with Duncan MacNaughton, that’s just a drop in the bucket. In fact, Gushman has developed everything from single-family homes, to high-rise condos, to industrial and retail projects. He has also managed a $250 million mortgage business.
They both have staying power, history, and liquidity. But, just my lousy 2 cents.

No one has a good handle on vertigo. While some manipulation from trained hands could help many patients are untreatable. Fortunately most of the time vertigo goes away after a few days up to a few months with no after effects. For some though it never goes away completely.
Temporary relief; soft drinks with caffeine and carbonation like colas, sprite, etc. It doesn’t cure it, but it seems to help a little.
Turn head to side and hold like stretching for max 25 seconds. Loosens muscles to increase blood flow to the head.
I initially got my vertigo from dehydration. Stay hydrated.
The pills did not work for me.

Additional funds will help but it won’t cure being 2,500 miles in the middle of nowhere. Miano had it right when he said it’s about creating a brand, the University of Hawaii brand. JJ began creating that brand which at this point is non-existent due to small picture leadership at all levels in the athletic department. It’s not just about winning, it’s about creating a charismatic program which strikes at the emotions. Only guy there that is doing it now is Dave Shoji. I think Coolen has a bit of it. Wade understands it but is in a dying sport. Perhaps Laura Beeman could build her program into one. Would like to hear who others think have it.

Hello great topic about marketing of the University of Hawaii Athletics. I whole heartily agree that our UH has no clue on how to market their athletic programs. It will take someone with vision and creativity. Unfortunately our system ties the hands of anyone trying to shake up the system. Everyone on the blog has made great points on the problems with the system and culture at the UH. There are many of you that have come up with out of the box ideas that a good marketing department would love to brain storm and put all the right matrix in place. Don’t hold your breath with our marketing department…clueless.
Another point is that we are missing the boat with the Asian market big time. The PAC 12 has recognized this market and working on a target plan. We need a comprehensive marketing plan to promote the University of Hawaii as the home team of the Pacific. The Hawaii Tourism Authority should partner up with the University of Hawaii as part of the comprehensive plan. We cannot continue to piece meal any marketing by the UHAD and be successful. I think the first order of business is to change the culture in the UH system that handicaps our ability to have a sustainable and effective voice to market our brand.

You’re right #70 but you’re also wrong because this is a blog and not the marketing department and the function of a blog is to express concerns, ideas and hope. Yes you are right that ideas without action/implementation is just as good as no ideas but ideas have to start somewhere and if ideas get picked up by those in authority that those ideas have a chance. Consider this as a brain storming session with no regard whether an idea is good or bad but in the end an idea becomes more than an idea.
Have a international male/ female hula fest at the Stan Sherif that includes a cultural awareness program. And , oh yeah market the athletic program as an add on.
There should be a connection to our pass and a funnel to our future. Japan has a world class volleyball program , so does China we should bring them here also Japan has a budding football interest we should nuture that. do work shops with the great poly’s we have here. They can get some of these things in the Pac 12
but what Hawaii has in abundance and nobody else has is the culture of Aloha. We should work all of that into the mix.

You know when I think of the system, I think of our State being run on the old boy network. It has become corrupt and ineffective. There is just too much waste within the system and state workers have no incentive to be effective and sensitive to the needs of the public. We have to look at the total picture because the flaw in the UHAD system is just part of and symbolic of the problems that continue today.

I like the hula fest idea, but should be associated to a sport/sports. Hawaii Tourism Authority should work with UHAD on the volleyball connection with Japan/China. Same with a nascent Japan football program – I think beyond a training program there needs to be a general education program to create an audience.
When I was at UH one of my best friends was from Japan, he didn’t understand football – he thought it was just a bunch of guys running into each other. With my limited knowledge i explained the tactical aspect of the ground and air game and the problem of defending each. He had a better appreciation for the sport – seeing that it took more than brute force to succeed.

Oldtimer, way to throw everyone under the bus. It’s all about perception, and yours is not an uncommon one. The “old boy” network was more prevalent with the previous administration. We had Budget and Finance director overseeing a multi-billion dollar budget without a 4 year degree. The new budget director came in and refinanced our notes to a lower interest rate which resulted in savings equal to the deficit accumulated under the previous administration. The turnaround took only one year. If anything, this guy (Kalbert Young) should be the comptroller of the UH system. The new ERS funds manager has presided over the largest amount of cash reserves in ERS history. It’s easy to throw stones at people without any facts to back it up. The current administration’s downfall may be it’s inability to curry favor from the worker’s unions and poor public relations personnel.

I’m sure the individuals who have helped worked very hard to over come the generational culture that prevails within the system. It is not my intention to be negative and throw everyone under the bus but to have the kind of dialog to look at the total picture and make the necessary hard changes to move us forward. I would like to see the University of Hawaii Athletic department be autonomous and be able to function within the guidelines set forth by the athletic department. Oldtimer, with your views on autonomy, I agree 100%. People (public, legislators, exec. branch, etc.) need to realize that UH, including our Athletic Department, should be the crown jewel of our state. It’s not cheap, but essential. They need to stop nitpicking. With two college-aged children, I have visited 14 universities, from Washington to California. State schools such as UW and the UC schools ARE the crown jewels of their respective states. They tell everyone, “this is the best we have to offer.” Unfortunately, as you drive up University Avenue and hit Dole Street, a similar message is not conveyed. Bachman Hall, as an administration building should be replaced. One of our two libraries (Sinclair) is not even air conditioned, a problem which is exacerbated by having a foul smelling tree growing just outside the front entrance (a cruel joke from the country that donated the tree).

your #2 flight problems with Hawaiian is a continuing saga of how their services is slowly turning their friends and customers to look for alternatives.
so far, we have not experienced any flight delays for the Hawaiian 1:50 am departure.
how ever, I believe their service sucks and looking for a new carrier to provide a direct flight from Hnl to LV and back
then, “jump ship” to the new carrier – maybe Southwest Airlines?
I no longer use Hawaiian because they have turned into a greedy pig with lousy service.
#94 I went with my child to the college of her choice in mid-America. This institution, like UH is a land grant, public institution. The similarities end there.
The college is often time mistaken to be a private one as the educational experience of its students, judging by my child’s experience, is top notch. The way they treat their students is unbelievable and their campus is simply impressive. My child also applied to UH and was treated like “a number”; the attitude was come if you like but we’re not really interested.
The institution of choice called, her, spoke with us, had a graduate from that institution contact us and arranged to meet with us to give us a perspective of the institution. Once the choice to attend was made, the school coordinated classes, dorm accommodations and assigned an adviser to assist as needed.
UH is simply average at best. This is sad as it could be the gem of the State and the Pacific, yet somehow it manages to remain the same.
I am a graduate of UH, but given the superior treatment, education and experience that the mid-western institution gave my child, I have over the years chosen to respond positive to their request for support.
And positive support for ST. I pray for fast healing and lots of rest. Amen.
