    Howzit Kealoha,

This question is from James, another fellow Monarch. He had the same question I had. By the way I got a great photo of you during the Idaho game last year.
“Hey Kealoha, Viriliter Age and thanks for taking the time out to blog with us. One of several fellow Damien brothers on this blog. Anyway, just wanted to know how the transition to slot has been going?

I would often think, after watching you run, what kind of damage you might do to opposing Ds if you were converted to a slot. I think it will be substantial. Anyway, keep up the good work and make us all proud.”

  2. Kealoha Pilares July 29, 2008 11:38 am

    what’s up guys…

  3. FloridaTed July 29, 2008 11:39 am

    Hi, Kealoha,

Thanks for sharing your time. We’re ll rootig for you.

What is your honest preference, slotback or running back?

  4. HoustonMike July 29, 2008 11:39 am

    kealoha,

do you think Coach Mack will still use you in running situations?

  5. djmitcho July 29, 2008 11:39 am

What was it about the AFA that made you want to come back to Hawaii

  6. Stretch July 29, 2008 11:40 am

Hey gang…have to go to a meeting until 100. Can anyone post this question for me to Kealoha on the chat blog.

What’s your assessment of this years offense, from what you’ve seen so far?

  8. Kealoha Pilares July 29, 2008 11:41 am

    Howzit Kealoha,

the transition has been great.. with coach Ron and Stutz, they have helped me to understand the offense alot more.. also my fellow players haved helped alot too..

  9. FloridaTed July 29, 2008 11:42 am

How much do you know about Ron Lee’s tweaked offense and how do you like it?

  10. Hoohiki July 29, 2008 11:42 am

    Hey, Kealoha,
What was the main factor that prompted you to come back home? I was a bit disappointed at first when you chose to go to the Air Force Academy, so now it’s all good that you came home and transferred to UH.

  11. Stretch July 29, 2008 11:42 am

ooopss, sorry, didn’t know dj already posted it.

What’s your take on the new QB’s – Raush and Alexander??

  12. FloridaTed July 29, 2008 11:44 am

In work outs and no doubt many discussions among yourselves, do you feel this years offense will be as productive as last year?

  13. Hoohiki July 29, 2008 11:44 am

What is your major? I know you have to be academically sound to have been accepted at the AFA.

  14. HoustonMike July 29, 2008 11:45 am

    Kealoha,

You’re from wahiawa, just wondering if you used to play bball out in whitmore village also…i might have played against you a couple times, if that was you, you are damn quick!

  15. Kealoha Pilares July 29, 2008 11:45 am

    Hi, Kealoha,

Thanks for sharing your time. We’re ll rootig for you.

What is your honest preference, slotback or running back?

to be honest, with my body type and running style, i would have to say slotback… in the run and shoot, it offers alot more opportunities to make plays and get the ball…

  16. Hoohiki July 29, 2008 11:48 am

Which quarterback so far have you clicked with in terms of running plays and being on the same page? (I know it’s early, but sometimes you can get a feel, even from just unsupervised workouts.)

  17. Da Punchbowl Kid July 29, 2008 11:48 am

    Kealoha,
Could you remind Tsai to pay his credit card bill? 😆

Seriously, thanks for joining us today. I think you are going to be an awesome player at your new position. What’s your current bench, squat and 40 yd dash. I see you as an All WAC player eventually.

  18. Kealoha Pilares July 29, 2008 11:49 am

    kealoha,

do you think Coach Mack will still use you in running situations?

so far he hasn’t really talked to me about running the ball.. i believe the main thing he wants me to do is get comfortable with the slot position.. i also believe that the guys in the running back position now will get the job done..

  19. Hoohiki July 29, 2008 11:50 am

It seemed like you were one of June Jones favorites…how did you feel about him leaving?

  20. LizKauai [Believer] July 29, 2008 11:52 am

Kealoha- After the Sugar Bowl experience, do you feel better prepared for what you will face in the Swamp- and are there any special ways you have been preparing for that game? We’ll be there to cheer, btw !

  21. Kealoha Pilares July 29, 2008 11:53 am

What’s your assessment of this years offense, from what you’ve seen so far?

from what i’ve seen so far, this years offense will have depth in all positions.. with Coach Ron taking over, i believe that the quarterbacks won’t have all the pressure on their shoulders.. also alot more options will open up with the quarterback going under the center..

  22. FloridaTed July 29, 2008 11:54 am

Your answer (#15) was exactly what I wanted to hear, lol. You’ll do very well, I’m sure.

  23. Hoohiki July 29, 2008 11:54 am

What has been your favorite moment (doesn’t have to be a game) being a Warrior football player?

  24. Da Punchbowl Kid July 29, 2008 11:55 am

    Kelaoha,
From what you’ve seen so far, what are the biggest differences between Coach Jones’ RnS and Coach Lee’s version?

  25. Kealoha Pilares July 29, 2008 11:58 am

    Hey, Kealoha,
What was the main factor that prompted you to come back home? I was a bit disappointed at first when you chose to go to the Air Force Academy, so now it’s all good that you came home and transferred to UH.

i believe that that whole airforce experience was a stage in my life.. going to the academy is something only a few can experience and i understood that… however, i just felt that the lifestyle wasn’t for me and all i wanted to do was to be happy…
    now im home…
    im a warrior…
    and im happy..

  26. Hoohiki July 29, 2008 11:58 am

What are your 2 personal goals this year you’d like to accomplish as a football player?

  27. FloridaTed July 29, 2008 11:58 am

    Dito for answer #21.

  28. Hoohiki July 29, 2008 12:01 pm

Thanks for your answers, Kealoha! I have been a fan of yours since your Damien days …(My brother is a Damien grad too.)

  29. Kealoha Pilares July 29, 2008 12:01 pm

ooopss, sorry, didn’t know dj already posted it.

What’s your take on the new QB’s – Raush and Alexander??

both are athletes… i remember the first time seeing Greg at 7’s.. didn’t know he was a quarterback.. he’s build more like a tight end than anything.. i just feel that it’s going to be a battle in camp.. the position is wide open right now

  30. lava1 July 29, 2008 12:03 pm

Can’t wait to see KP duty again this year — you were really explosive last year. Have a great, great year.

Do any of the new guys impress you as making an impact this season?

  31. Hoohiki July 29, 2008 12:04 pm

Who has been your most influential mentor so far in your football career?

  32. Kealoha Pilares July 29, 2008 12:06 pm

It seemed like you were one of June Jones favorites…how did you feel about him leaving?

haha thats a first… Coach Jones was a man of few words… i feel like him leaving was something for the players in this program… like many others, he felt there was things that needed to be done and done quick.. he put this program in the spotlight for everyone to see.. and i’m thankful Coach Mac took the job to continue what he started

  33. Kealoha Pilares July 29, 2008 12:08 pm

What has been your favorite moment (doesn’t have to be a game) being a Warrior football player?

without a doubt, the sugar bowl… coming form ol Damien, we were lucky to get a 100 people at our games.. so going to the big show was something i will never forget..

  34. Kealoha Pilares July 29, 2008 12:12 pm

What are your 2 personal goals this year you’d like to accomplish as a football player?

first is to take care of my body and stay injury free..
second is to achieve some sort of WAC award..

    kealoha:

you can tell your kids and grandkids that you scored da 1st TD of the memorable 2007 season, you don’t have to tell dem about being so excited and slipping on da newly painted endzones 🙂

all kidding aside, gl in your move to da slot, should be very exciting seeing you more in da open field. looking forward to seeing you get some inside handoffs from da slot position, last time i remember da warriors using it was when stutz was playing IIRC.

  36. PONO July 29, 2008 12:17 pm

    Hey Kealoha,
Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to chat with us football enthusiasts. What do you think of Coach Mac’s aggressive local recruiting effort? If you were back in H.S. would you have given UH more consideration if coach Jones took a more active effort in recruiting like Mac?

  37. Stretch July 29, 2008 12:19 pm

Can you have ST take a picture of the tattoos on your forearms and post it?? I know of a certain Tsaikette who will love it!!

  38. Da Punchbowl Kid July 29, 2008 12:19 pm

    Kelaoha,
Is there anything you would like to say to the Warrior Fans?

i feel like Coach Mac has done a great job at giving the local players a shot to play for UH.. by reaching out into the communities and holding camps, i feel that he has shown Hawaii that he cares and wants local people on this team.. i would have considered it more i think because he comes off as a great man who cares about his team…

  40. kalamaku July 29, 2008 12:22 pm

    Aloha Kealoha

How, in general, has the timing been coming with the QBs, esp the new JC guys? Do you feel they are getting a solid feel for the system and the receivers are jelling with them?

  52. hawnstln July 29, 2008 12:38 pm

Kealoha, what did you learn from playing an SEC team like Georgia last year? Will it prepare you/the team for Florida? What is your projected playing weight and 40 time? Good luck and we’ll see you at the road games!!

  53. da princess' classmate July 29, 2008 12:38 pm

  56. Kealoha Pilares July 29, 2008 12:39 pm

What do you expect will be the toughest thing for the team to overcome in your season opener?

i believe that the toughest thing will be the heat.. however, in the next few weeks, Coach Mac will get us into the best shapes of our lives.. by the time Florida comes, we should be mentally and physically ready for anything.. we just have the confidence in ourselves that we can play with the best in the nation..

  57. addahknowjoe July 29, 2008 12:41 pm

    Howzit Kealoha-

Hopefully you’re still here to answer this:

I see you’ve got the Hawaiian version of the UA logo on your moped. Do you think that it should be marketed/used by UA for Hawaii fans?

  58. Kealoha Pilares July 29, 2008 12:48 pm

Kealoha, what did you learn from playing an SEC team like Georgia last year? Will it prepare you/the team for Florida? What is your projected playing weight and 40 time? Good luck and we’ll see you at the road games!!

i believe playing a team like Georgia taught us alot about ourselves.. although we were at the top of the WAC, it taught us that you have to come out and play like it was your last every game.. also when things seem perfect, there is always room for improvementt and you should never be satisfied..

  59. kshakak July 29, 2008 12:50 pm

    Kealoha,

During the offseason, what are the biggest improvements the team (and you personally) has made?

    Mahalo

  60. Kealoha Pilares July 29, 2008 12:52 pm

sorry about that but about the 40…

i never got an accurate time at it… my first year, Coach Mel didn’t believe his watch so i had to run it 2 more times…

this year i was ready than ever… however, it was stopped due to the fact that people were getting hurt… like all of you, i am curious to know

  61. a July 29, 2008 12:55 pm

Are you going to miss any of the stuff that JJ brought to UH football over the years (i.e. uniforms, eo na toa e chants, etc.)? Good luck this season.

  63. Kealoha Pilares July 29, 2008 12:57 pm

    Kealoha,

During the offseason, what are the biggest improvements the team (and you personally) has made?

    Mahalo

in terms of lifting, i feel that the team has bought more into the powerclean lift. i feel that it’s lift that truly measures a players explosion and field strenght.. everyone has been throwing around weight they never touched before..

  64. djmitcho July 29, 2008 1:02 pm

    Kealoha,
Mahalo for sticking around for so long and answering everyone’s questions.

Who jumps out among the db’s. Which guy(s) are the toughest in coverage?

the db’s that are toughest in coverage would be J.P, Jameel, and Mouton… the db unit as a whole i believe will be one of the best we have had in a long time…

  66. kshakak July 29, 2008 1:04 pm

    Hmm…the ground just moved…

A real earthquake in California… hope everyone is OK. 😳

…when I first read J’s post, my first thought was to wonder how she found out about Stretch’s big BET so quickly… 😛

  107. Stretch July 29, 2008 2:20 pm

Is Michelle Wie qualified for this LPGA major tournament?? I thought she only has one more tournament left to get her card for next year. If she could have played, she is crazy not to be there and be playing in the PGA where the money does not count towards her LPGA tour card.

Wie, who is managed by her parents, was listed in qualifying for the Women’s British Open at Sunningdale. But she pulled out and instead has a sponsor’s exemption for the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open at Reno, Nev. It is her eighth PGA Tour event.

  108. Stretch July 29, 2008 2:21 pm

Or does Michelle Wie have to try and qualify for the tournament first??

  109. curveball July 29, 2008 2:25 pm

    Stretch:

Its my understanding that the British Open money would not count for her either. Its not an LPGA event.

  110. (Jesse) James July 29, 2008 2:26 pm

liz/gigi….the top pick is of his arm..the bottom one is his leg…

  111. Stretch July 29, 2008 2:31 pm

Thanks curveball for the clarification. Would you know if it would have counted towards her 7 (??) tournaments she can play a year as a non-LPGA member??

  112. (Jesse) James July 29, 2008 2:38 pm

Hoohiki…Christian Vasconcellos (UH) and Keoni Steinhoff (UH) are also from Damien, as well as Haku Correa (UH). In years past there was Chris Brown (UH), Chad Kurashige (Pacific), Mel DeLaura (UH), Eddie Klaneski (UH), Keoni Kilbey (UH)…that’s all I can remember at the moment…

  113. al July 29, 2008 2:45 pm

i guess lizk and gigi have not seen too many naked arms in their time.

jessejames is right the top pick is his upper arm. go see the tatto pattern for further discovery.

Anyone listen to 1420 this morning and hear the trivia question, “What team beat Waianae to win the 1985 Prep Bowl??” The answer was Pac-5. To take the question one step further, “Does anyone know which Tsaiko was one of the coaches on that 1985 team that Garrett Gabriel was the QB??”

  119. curveball July 29, 2008 3:03 pm

It would not count against her 7 because it is not a LPGA event…

Kazz – From yesterday, mahalos on the info about the kickers. I guess Symonds does have the K job locked down then…

Speaking of Kickers from Temecula…when I asked Garret about it in a previous blog I thought it was a kid who attended Dan Kelly’s HS. Obviously it’s not, but there is a K from Dan Kelly’s HS that is a pretty good kicker. A kid named Colin Yost. He’s attended kicking combines and has faired pretty well at each. Good size at 6’3″ 195lbs. and a pretty strong leg. Not sure if he’s been offered to play somewhere but he seems like D1 potential…

At least = does not make sense.

  149. Koauka July 29, 2008 8:15 pm

I played baseball against Joey DeSa, the terror of Lanakila Park. The folks that lived across the right field fence were on alert when Joe was at bat.

The home runs he hit were some bombs that landed on the porch of that house. And that was PAL Pony League (13-14 years old)

And his high school career took off at Damien Memorial High School. Think he is c/o 1977. Signed a professional baseball contract after graduation with the St.Louis Cardinals

Sadly he passed away in a car accident while playing winter ball. I’m certain he woulda been a big time major league baseballer.

And an ILH all star DB for the Monarchs.

Quite an honor to play ball against him.

  151. gigi-hawaii © July 29, 2008 8:19 pm

Koauka, c/o 1977? My mom retired as registrar from Damien in 1978. She received the 1st Damien DeVeuster award the following year for good service to the school.

She really liked the school. Was the first secretary hired in 1961 when it opened.

Always said, “The students were like my children, and the teachers were like my brothers.”

    Memories.

  152. Koauka July 29, 2008 8:28 pm

    Gigi:

I think your Mom must have known Joey, because he’s a pretty nice guy.

Even though he kicked our okoles. Hard to get mad at Joey when he’s a true gentleman.

BTW: His uncle is Farrington star John Matias and his son played baseball at UH.

  153. gigi-hawaii © July 29, 2008 8:31 pm

My mom is 92 now and somewhat senile. I doubt she would remember his name after all these years and in her condition.

Koauka, did you play baseball after high school?

Thank you to Kealoha for the excellent chat! He represented the Warriors well in the chat and did a great job on the field last season. I look for him to have an excellent career as a slot WR–he’s deadly in the open field and the offense has plays that can get him the ball with room to make something happen.

Garret, how can you call an earthquake day a great day? The media said there were some injuries.

  166. Garret July 29, 2008 9:08 pm

Some notes on today’s Dolphins practice.

Kircus is zooming up the depth chart, while my favorite rook Davone Bess finally dropped a pass today.

In the FB battle, Boomer Grigsby continues to display much better hands than Reagan Mauia when thrown to in the flat.

  167. al July 29, 2008 9:09 pm

  168. Garret July 29, 2008 9:09 pm

The Dolphins will have no team banquet and will not choose an MVP from last season.

The Dolphins confirmed that there would be no team banquet this year and for the first time in team history the team MVP award was listed as, ‘vacant.’

The banquet is usually used as in inspiration to the next year’s team, and several awards are handed out, and a video of highlights of the preseason are shown.

Obviously, a 1-15 team has far more lowlights than highlights.

  169. Garret July 29, 2008 9:10 pm

Lots of WRs for Miami dropped passes today.

There were five dropped passes, including one by TE David Martin, who seems to have one every other day. WR Davone Bess’ miscue was the real surprise. The rookie from Hawaii has caught everything thrown his way since the rookie mini-camp.

  170. Garret July 29, 2008 9:12 pm

Miami’s management isn’t happy with their WR situation and they apparently are adding Terry Glenn.

Also, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram cites two sources in reporting that ex-Cowboys receiver Terry Glenn is “expected” to sign with Miami.

Signing Glenn, waived Friday and a free agent, would be a low-risk Band-Aid on a thinness at the Dolphins’ wideout spot, although it hardly is in keeping with Miami’s rebuilding motif to sign a 34-year-old receiver coming off a season lost almost entirely to a knee injury.

Bottom line? Solid move. You get, for very little, a guy with four 1,000-yard seasons including back-to-backers in 2005-06. Click here to review Glenn’s year-by-year and career stats.

The signing would be predictable because Dolphins major domo Bill Parcells previously coached Glenn in both New England and Dallas.

  171. Garret July 29, 2008 9:15 pm

    gigi,

The earthquake was in East LA, far from San Diego. When I lived in LA I lived through two *large* earthquakes, one that destroyed freeways and caused damage that took years to completely fix. Compared to that, this earthquake was extremely minor and the damage it caused was fairly low for the attention it got.

Was an earthquake in LA supposed to ruin my Anniversary? I don’t get that logic.

  172. gigi-hawaii © July 29, 2008 9:17 pm

just kidding, Garret. And, no, an earthquake in LA was not supposed to ruin your anniversary!

  173. Garret July 29, 2008 9:19 pm

    Al,

My girls had a LOT of fun with their babysitter–she was Faith’s preschool teacher when Faith was 3 and Mika will be in her class for preschool starting tomorrow. She was the perfect babysitter and my kids didn’t miss us at all…they have been asking for a babysitter for a long time and they were not disappointed.

I posted all the Miami stuff already…it took a couple of minutes to read everything and there wasn’t much about Bess/Reagan/Samson. I hope I can find other stuff, but I don’t have anything else ready to go.

  174. Garret July 29, 2008 9:23 pm

    gigi,

No problem with the joke. I do hope that those who suffered some damage (like Ronnie’s brother) are fine and that their losses were minimal. I have other friends near the epicenter who had some things fall to the ground, but no major damage.

The difference between a 5.4 and a 7.4 is 100 times the power. When I worked for JPL between 91-94 we had 2 earthquakes that were above 7…those were *really* crazy to live through. This one was just some minor swaying so I figured it was far away from us and wasn’t that big. When I checked online it seemed that the earthquake’s damage was not too bad.

  175. gigi-hawaii © July 29, 2008 9:26 pm

Is San Diego standing on top of or near a fault? Is the San Andreas fault nearby?

  176. Garret July 29, 2008 9:28 pm

This website updated the preseason predictions for each conference. Looking at UH’s nonconference opponents:

Aside from Lindy, Cincinnati is predicted to finish 4th or 5th in the Big East.

Oregon State is picked to finish 5th in the Pac-10.

Florida is picked to finish either 1st or 2nd in the SEC (with Georgia either 1st or 2nd).

  177. Stretch July 29, 2008 9:29 pm

    Congratulations JD!!!

JD has finally signed a 5 year contract

  178. Garret July 29, 2008 9:30 pm

    gigi,

Thankfully, San Diego is *not* on a fault line. When I lived in LA, nobody would sell me earthquake insurance for any reasonable price. In San Diego I have insurance companies contacting me to ask me to buy earthquake insurance from them, and they ask for well under 10% of what I was quoted when I lived in LA.

  179. Garret July 29, 2008 9:31 pm

Congratulations to JD! It took a long time but I’m glad that it is finally official!

  180. Garret July 29, 2008 9:32 pm

This site picks Cinci to finish at #23 in the country. Reading the full analysis I think they are assuming that Cinci beats UH.

Sixth in the Big East? Really? I can only assume the prognostoscenti is reacting to Ben Mauk’s pending ascension to the peak of Mount Sinai, or whatever, and no doubt the opinions would be more optimistic if the school’s single-season passing leader gets his sixth year between now and the end of August. Even if he doesn’t, though, UC has a fine option in Notre Dame refugee Demetrius Jones, who was too hyped coming out of high school to let his two series’ worth of halfhearted spread option against Georgia Tech cloud his potential in Brian Kelly’s offense, which has had a hell of a three-year run — unless, I guess, you think setting single-season records at two different schools while leading both to banner seasons (Central Michigan won the MAC championship in 2006 and ten games for the first time since 1979; last year, Cincinnati finished in the final polls for the first time ever in Kelly’s first go-round) is some kind of happy accident. Jones is more athletic than Mauk or CMU’s Dan LeFevour, and has four receivers back who combined for 26 touchdowns last year. The defense has all-Big East-caliber players on the interior line (Terrill Byrd), linebacker (Corey Smith) and at corner, where Mike Mickens is consistently listed among the best cover guys in the country, with DeAngelo Smith not far behind. Given Jones’ alleged physical ability and Kelly’s recent track record with multi-faceted quarterbacks, I’m not sure what the Bearcats are supposed to be missing that makes them significantly removed from last year’s ten-game winner.

  181. gigi-hawaii © July 29, 2008 9:33 pm

  184. Garret July 29, 2008 9:36 pm

Interesting how so many newspaper writers are leaving the print world and taking jobs with Rivals or ESPN or other alternatives.

All of which brings us to 2008, and a fascinating exodus that’s occurring just under the radar in the sportswriting world. As print newspapers become less and less relevant (and far less profitable), more and more top talents are jumping off the sinking ship to ply their trades online. In blog parlance, it’s called “taking the Boeing,” a phrase coined by uber-blogger Glenn Reynolds when ace political writer Mickey Kaus agreed to bring his hugely-popular Kausfiles blog under the Slate.com umbrella (Slate being owned by Microsoft, which shares its home city of Seattle with aircraft behemoth Boeing–it’s a stretch as a joke, but it works).

Fort Worth Star-Telegram living legend Wendell Barnhouse recently hung up his newspaper spurs to become the Big 12 Conference’s online reporter. Under less voluntary circumstances, Jay Christensen (who wrote the blurb about Barnhouse linked just above), was recently axed thanks to the floundering LA Times’ efforts at cost cutting. Christensen’s previously-anonymous blog The Wizard of Odds was (and is) among the very best college football sites out there, and I’m betting that Jay will go a lot farther online than he would have in the stratified world of big-newspaper sportswriting.

Even when people don’t leave their big-media home bases, they’re finding more readers by going online.

Readers are leaving newspapers far faster than the better writers. I remember hearing my dad gripe about the state of the Montgomery Advertiser about a decade ago. Gannett had bought out what was up until that point the best paper in the state, and their low salaries and Mickey Mouse editorial template quickly ran off everybody with any smidgen of talent. “What can you do?” he asked me rhetorically. “You have to get a paper, and even this garbage is the best one around here.”

Now Dad has an iBook with a wireless hookup, and every newspaper in the world is as close as his end table. He used to get three daily papers while I was growing up; now he gets one, and I’ll bet you he won’t renew it the next time a bill arrives.

Amazing that Tennessee has a recruiting budget of over $2 mil! Just about every BCS conference school has significantly increased their recruiting budget in recent years, and that was before the travel costs went crazy and made recruiting even more expensive!

Notre Dame ranks second in overall recruiting budget, just behind Tennessee. The Irish spent $1,758,300 in 2006-07, up from $1,014,600 in 2001-02.

    That’s a 73 percent spending increase. Tennessee, meanwhile, spent $2,005,700 in 06-07.

Notre Dame’s recruiting budget bumped 161 percent from 1996-97, when the school spent $674,000 on recruiting for all sports.

Of BCS schools, the 161 percent jump in 10 years is the eighth largest, just behind Indiana.

    Hey everybody,

Its been a while since I last posted (months). Been really busy. Moved from Denver to Seattle last month. Living with the inlaws while looking for a new place. Wife and I just got back from Hawaii a couple of weeks ago after my family had a reunion there. I had hoped for more vacationing time than family obligation time while I was off of work for that period. Oh well. Looking forward to the season.

I was hoping to drive to the Oregon State game but UH is out of tix. Would anyone be able to provide me with information on how to get seats in the Hawaii section? Any leads would be helpful.

Got to go to bed. I`ll try not to be a stranger here too much longer. Football season fast approaches!!!

SteveM, don’t you mean the room holds AT MOST 55 persons?

At least = does not make sense.

gigi — 55 is the general cut-off with some margin for any special guests or friends ST invites.

This could include you and hubby in case your RSVP gets lost in cyberspace… 😐

Just got thru looking at SteveM’s site. The guest list for the big karaoke call looks good, though Liz is not on it. Too bad, Liz!

Sorry, I hate to sing. Hubby likes to sing, though not well, but he won’t go without me.

Norm Chow is guaranteed $1.24 mil over 3 years from UCLA and still will be getting $1 mil per year for the next 2 years from the Titans. They are backloading Norm’s 3-year deal and putting money into categories other than salary because Norm’s salary over the next 2 years will be deducted from what the Titans owe him. So, if you count the money from the Titans, the “talent fee”, and the pro-rated portion of his retention bonus, Norm will be making more than Mack for the next 2 years.

Offensive coordinator Norm Chow is guaranteed $1.24 million in a backloaded three-year deal with UCLA, in the crowning stroke of creative hiring by coach Rick Neuheisel, who was able to put together an impressive staff on basically the same budget as former coach Karl Dorrell’s last staff.

Neuheisel’s staff is guaranteed $1,705,000. Dorrell’s final staff was paid $1,620,000.

Neuheisel’s big coup was landing Chow, and it took creativity to make the contract work.

According to documents obtained by the Daily News, Chow has a base salary of $250,000 per season. He will receive a talent fee of $50,000 in each of the first two years of the contact, and $140,000 in the final year.

If Chow remains with the Bruins for a third year, he will earn a $250,000 retention bonus, which becomes payable when he takes part in UCLA’s first spring practice for the 2010 season.

The deal is backloaded because Chow’s contract with the NFL’s Tennessee Titans, who fired him in the offseason, calls for him to be paid $1 million in each of the next two years.

    good evening everyone

just finished reading up on all the postings. much information and trivia on Damien. lots of names I remember because they were either my classmates or I coached and taught many of dem. the only ones I don’t recall is the graduates after 80’s. left to coach w/ Bothello @ Pac5.

da Pac had two Prep Bowl (82&85) victories against Waianae. First one with Joe Onosai as running back and second with Gabriel as qb.

tons of memories for both programs.

well kinda tired so esme out and getting some zzzzzzzzzz time. play nice and if you can make it to Waimalu come on down to check out JD and coach Mac.

    nite nite

    Gigi:

Played some baseball after high school Got into coaching girls’ softball.
First team I coached, girls were 9 – 10 years old. Had to teach them how
to throw, catch, hit and the rules of the game. Kinda like Beginning Softball. Followed and coached them all the way to high school. About six years in all. Someday, I really want to go back to coaching.

    Garret:

Neuheisel is pretty akamai. Norm’s got a awesome contract. Earn them millions by production. And the PAC-10, especially USC, better start paying attention to UCLA.

It cracks me up when UCLA beats USC. Got three cousin who grad from UCLA. All of them enlightend me on the “culture” of the UCLA vs USC game. Funny and vulgar stuff from that game each year.

  212. gigi-hawaii © July 29, 2008 11:28 pm

Good, koauka, thanks for the response. Gotta give you a lot of credit for coaching those young kids. Weren’t they rambunctious?

    Howzit Tsaikos!

Just finished catching up on 6 days worth of blog reading. Went to Maui on the SuperSloop Thurs and came back last night. Had a blast. Played tourii and splurged for a night at the Grand Wailea. Got to work this morning and by 8 am had 3 more tasks to do in addition to the uku million I already had. Welcome back!!!

My daughter’s birthday is next week. 13! 😯 Hubby, however, won’t be here to celebrate. He’s heading off to SD for a conference.

Anyways, way off topic… got a couple of questions for the worldly Tsaiko geniuses out there.
    1) Kid wants to go parasailing for her bday. Any suggestions?
    2) Am craving good tempura. Any suggestions for a place that’s reasonably priced, either in town, on the east or Windward sides?

Happy B-day to brother Mike. Happy anniversary to Garrett & Lori.

See you tomorrow. Gotta go nene. Hasta manana.

  215. al July 30, 2008 12:19 am

okay homey is still alive and a kickin’

gg….chow was an asst at usc not a head coach.

hd coaches demand a lot more in pay than the athletic directors.

koauka…..you will find coaching kids other than yours just as if not more rewarding. because now you do it strictly for the good of the game and for the kids’ sake.

  216. Koauka July 30, 2008 12:36 am

    al:

There were some very personal reasons why I wanted a coaching job.
One, the best coaches were teachers. They could explain almost everthing you asked and treated you well. Two, these coaches were fair, honest, and sincere. Politics never came into coaching. I repeat, politics never came into coaching. And the three of us always shot straight.

And during those six years I proved it I got coaching talent.

And today, there are a bunch of Warrior Coaches who are teachers first.
And some I met are good people, too.

    Aloha, late night Tsaikos!!

Did another run through the Swamp lands. Very boring blogs compared to Tsaikoland.

In a couple of lengthy season predictions threads of which http://www.gatorcountry.com/swampgas/showthread.php?t=60593 is a good example, gator fans are very unconcerned about their chances against Hawaii with most sure they will hold us to less than 21 points and lay 50 to 60 points on us. There is some concern about Miami which Florida plays the week after us, but nobody is discussing our game as anything other than an “easy win.”

  219. Lopaka43 July 30, 2008 1:38 am

ESPNU has put up a Preview at
    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/preview?gameId=282430057
and begun a Conversation thread for the Florida – Hawaii game at
    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/conversation?gameId=282430057&sort=oldest

As of 1:26 am HST, there were 34 comments of which only one thought that Hawaii would win a close game. All the rest (SEC homers) are certain we are looking at a repeat of the Sugar Bowl experience.

Fine with me. Blog away. I like what Pilares had to say about what he expects from the month of August under Coach Mack. Stay humble, work hard, be ready to play the best anywhere anytime. If we want to play on this stage, we must build on every one of these opportunities to measure ourselves against the best.

    Go Warriors!!
