Good morning, gang! Have a good time at Richie’s, one of our fav spots for lunch when we go Kalihi side.

  7. Buffoman May 7, 2009 7:02 am

    Top 10?

Any names on who has applied for the women’s BB coaching job?

On another note, for once, I’d like to see a hyped 7′ BB recruit actually do something on the court, aside from taking up space.

  8. Justin May 7, 2009 7:17 am

Is Brashton planning on shedding a few pounds? 260 is a lot of weight to carry on a 6 foot frame.

  9. Diogenes Sinope May 7, 2009 7:20 am

    Howzit Tsaikos!

    Top Ten!

ST – good interview last night on L&L.

  10. madeinhawaii May 7, 2009 7:22 am

Hmm… with 31 seniors, I’m surprised there are only 13 who participated.

    ‘Morning everyone.

  11. COPO May 7, 2009 7:23 am

So what if you’re a half or a quarter inch shorter, bottom line is performance!

  12. madeinhawaii May 7, 2009 7:25 am

? Daniel Libre’s name is on the UH roster… does that mean he got his year back?

  13. COPO May 7, 2009 7:25 am

Brashston Satele at 260 can probably still run his forty in the 4.6s range and keep his agility, he has great genes.

  14. al ™ May 7, 2009 7:34 am

copo….satele will have to run that fast to keep lolotai on the second team. mana’s stock has been rising unlike the american economy. the latter may even force satele to de.

i agree that satele should shed a few pounds and that he has great genes.

  15. al ™ May 7, 2009 7:36 am

so it would be nice to have solly as the chat host next week. although that would be amidst the finals’ schedules.

is he still a candidate for free agency? any contract sightings?

    ST,

Thank you for the stats from UH’s Junior Pro Day!

  17. al ™ May 7, 2009 7:38 am

unfortunate for adam leonard. all he needs is a chance.

we need help…obviously something in our training regime needs to be fixed. never heard of so many hamstring problems like we see over the past decade.

  18. Garret May 7, 2009 7:39 am

Mac emphasizes speed over size on D, and Brashton’s weight is more than some DEs in Mac’s D in the past. I’m hoping for Brashton to be that experienced returning player that can lead the LBs, but it might be best for him to focus on speed over size to keep his starting LB spot. I agree with Al that Brashton has a serious challenger to his spot…they will all work hard over the summer and the best man will win the job in camp.

  19. Garret May 7, 2009 7:40 am

    ST,

Thank you for the update on Adam. The report that he sat out the last day of the mini-camp was puzzling, but at least it was due to injury instead of because Seattle didn’t like him. However, the NFL doesn’t wait for players to recover (see: RGM last year), so hopefully he has a full recovery soon.

  20. Aloha Kakahiaka!

Some high-profile schools were hit by the APR in football and men’s basketball.

Among the few high-profile programs hit with penalties were the Mississippi and Minnesota football programs. Each will lose three scholarships this season.

In men’s basketball, Indiana was the highest-profile program penalized. The Hoosiers had already implemented their two scholarship losses this season. Purdue, Tennessee and Colorado were among the other high-profile programs hit in men’s basketball.

  22. Garret May 7, 2009 7:43 am

I didn’t realize that Portland State dropped wrestling in part due to the APR penalties.

An Inside Higher Ed report that Portland State and Delaware State dropped their wrestling programs because of poor academic progress performances was mentioned in a conference call with the N.C.A.A. Brand said he felt those instances would be rare.

  23. Garret May 7, 2009 7:45 am

Good luck to Gordy Shaw on his recruiting trip to Minnesota! With Minnesota losing out on 3 scholarships due to the APR, this might be extra good timing to take advantage of Shaw’s recruiting ties there…

Gordy Shaw, who recruited in-state football players for the Gophers for 14 years and now is offensive line coach at the University of Hawaii, will be in town this week recruiting at a half-dozen Minnesota high schools.

“Haven’t worn a pair of long pants since I got here Feb. 22,” Shaw said from Honolulu.

Shaw formerly coached at South Dakota.

“From Vermillion to Honolulu; that might be the biggest change (in the history) of college recruiting,” he said.

Shaw’s daughter Jenna will give the commencement speech for fellow graduates of Minnesota’s Institute of Technology on Friday.

  24. al ™ May 7, 2009 7:46 am

    miano, yesterday…..

….did not paint a nice picture for a free agent not being able to perform in mini-camps. there’s just too many to choose from and one becomes lost in the shuffle so quickly. he also didn’t advise going the cfl route because then you really become a needle in the haystack.

BYU students will not be able to watch ESPN on campus!

Campus Television dropped ESPN in an attempt to cut costs and added CBS College Sports.

“We decided to keep all the channels we have currently, except for ESPN, based on the cost of that package,” said Todd Hollingshead, University Communications information and financial manager. During negotiations for the new digital contract, campus television evaluated all of its existing packages and found that the ESPN package cost more than the combined price of all the other channels, he said. According to a University Communications press release, it was decided the expense of carrying ESPN could not be justified.

Article about the increase in attendance for spring football games/scrimmages. I wonder if UH could use the Warrior Bowl as a way to raise some money for the Athletic Department or a charity…

The announced spring-game attendances for schools from Bowl Championship Series conferences increased 8 percent this year. On average, 21,158 fans per BCS school showed up across the country to see vanilla play-calling and experience a pseudo-gameday environment before Memorial Day.

The SEC produced 10 of the 20 highest scrimmage attendances, led by Alabama at 84,050, the second-highest figure in the country. Ohio State was the 2009 “winner” with a crowd of 95,722 at $5 per ticket, breaking Alabama’s record mark from 2007.

Admission prices ranged from $3 to $15. Notre Dame and Southern Mississippi were on the high end at $15, although both also sold lower-priced tickets. In the cases of Oregon and Missouri, donated food items could serve as an admission cost.

Some schools donated spring-game proceeds to scholarship funds, libraries and charities. N.C. State didn’t charge admission but raised more than $30,000 for cancer funds in honor of the Wolfpack’s late women’s basketball coach, Kay Yow.

Former Arizona State QB is suing EA Sports because of their NCAA Football franchise. If this lawsuit wins (I think it is doubtful), future NCAA football games would not be able to use player ratings based on current players.

Sam Keller might not have been the college quarterback that many thought that he would be, but he soon might make a name for himself as the guy that took down the NCAA.

Keller, who played at Arizona State and Nebraska, is suing Electronic Arts and the NCAA for the “blatant and unlawful use” of student-athlete likenesses in video games.

Considering the suit is a class action lawsuit, it should be interesting to see how many join Keller, who is asking for profits owed and even seizure and destruction of all copies of any of these video games.

    Al,

Here are the top schools for the APR:

Notre Dame had 14 of its programs honored for the multi-year achievement – men’s baseball, men’s basketball, men’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s ice hockey, men’s soccer, men’s indoor track and field, men’s outdoor track and field, women’s fencing, women’s rowing, women’s soccer, women’s softball, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball. Eleven Irish programs were honored each of the last two years, in both 2007 and 2008.

No other former Division I football-playing institution had more programs honored this year than the 14 by Notre Dame. Next in line were Duke (12); the U.S. Naval Academy, Boston College and Stanford (11 each); Rice (seven); Michigan and North Carolina (six each); followed by Northwestern, Penn State, Virginia and Wake Forest (five each).

    Rainbow Wahine Softball Team,

A bend in the road is not the end of the road… unless you fail to make the turn.

    Still alive to play today.

Adversity is like a strong wind. It tears away from us all but the things that cannot be torn, so that we see ourselves as we really are.

Look to your sisters around you. Lose together and WIN together.

Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.

Sometimes one must lose first to learn how to win. The eight veterans on this team have experienced great success and untimely losses before. In life you never stop learning. Continue to learn from those errors to lead your younger teammates into battle today.

If you’re in a bad situation, don’t worry it’ll change. If you’re in a good situation, don’t worry it’ll change.

The constant winds of change can be frustrating. At least in sports you have the tools to adjust to these changes.

    Last but NOT least:

When written in Chinese the word “crisis” is composed of two characters – one represents danger and the other represents opportunity.

    Self explanatory.

    ST:

Yep, still remember Bob Nash and family in our valley. Can’t remember when they moved to “town”.

Used to see them exercising (walking) as a family.

Still see daughter with the HPU gals when they come to 24hr Fitness every Tues and Thurs – am tempted to say hello, but hold back as she and team in there for training.

  90. Kazz May 7, 2009 12:05 pm

Fonoti’s girlfriend was in the hospital, so he didn’t participate.

    I hope everything is ok.

I asked Greg Alexander about missing Junior Day. He said: “I dropped the ball on that one.”

Huh? Yeah I second Made’s comments on that one! 😆

Blaze has an excuse. I believe he wants to play two more years.

I can see this conversation happening already!

Coach: Blaze, you going to Junior Day for your measurements?

    Soares: Fo wot!?!?!?!?

  91. expat May 7, 2009 12:16 pm

Unless that is a typo R.J. has got quite a wingspan for his height. Nearly 6 inches more than anyone else — even while giving up quite a bit of height.

  92. Kazz May 7, 2009 12:17 pm

Let me play instigator here for a bit.

Let say that during Kim Willoughby’s time at UH we won a national championship in women’s volleyball. Following this information that she was tested positive for steroids now, would the NCAA make their second attempt to try to find out if she also used ‘roids while at UH to try to STEAL another championship away from us?

Kim was tested for every substance during the olympics and she was clean, this is ovbiously something she has done recently.
She was clean during her UH career as well.

Stephen, can’t wait to see the videos of the new warrior volleyball star.

Hello Merv! Great to have you back on the WB blog! Still wishing the Warriors and Dawgs get to play in Atlanta some day.

Would like to take a trip to fort Benning to see my old OCS billets near the jump towers.

how come you want to sell your end zone tickets? you going dish us?

    ST:

Picture of car taking 2 lanes. Kinda reminded me our our 1990 family trip to the Far East where, in Seoul, there were lane markings for 4 lanes but actually had 7 lines of cars. Mentioned to our guide that this was worst than New York city or Boston. Interestingly, there were no accidents, but a lot of jocking for positions amongst the drivers.

Former Bows basketball players: who was the most exciting to watch? who made the biggest contribution, not $$$, to UH? We all know that AC donated the largest sum to UH.

Would like to take a trip to fort Benning to see my old OCS billets near the jump towers.

A-House ~ Most of the old OCS buildings are gone. The WWII barracks you were at are also plowed under. Jump towers are fairly new and improved, but the training is still hot & sweaty. The entire complex is quite modernized, where the 90′ towers still dominate the landscape. Looks like a Disneyland on Steroids.

The old T-10 Chutes are still used, but with modern improvements in the chute and steering system. Even when the students return to their home unit, they learn to use the MCB-1 models and then all of the improved versions.

Once they’ve logged enough jumps, then the real thrill is to jump the “Squares” where the ride and controls are like the difference between driving a volkswagen bug and a Caddy!

Been back there twice, ’04 & ’06 to attend jump school graduation ceremonies for my son and then my daughter. -Airborne!

Al – nothing like good competition to keep everyone on their toes. Play the best 11, if Lolotai is one of the best 11 he should move up with Satele sliding to OLB or vise-versa. Potential is a coach killer (Soares – injury prone, Falemalu – unproven), I like #59 Kiesel-Kauhane, smaller, but has all the intangibles, smart, great work ethic, athletic and strong, has starting experience from 08.

  180. Committed Road Warrior May 7, 2009 5:09 pm

The ‘Bows can theoretically still make the WAC Tournament if they get swept by Fresno, but there’s a lot of “ifs” and “buts” that would go along with it, namely with how Sacramento State plays from here on out.

Of course, getting swept by Fresno would likely end the ‘Bows shot at an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament. Despite an RPI of 25, the ‘Bows are on a short leash and a series loss to either Fresno or Utah Valley will likely put them on the outside looking in.

  187. Kazz May 7, 2009 5:42 pm

Both the Wahine are in Fresno California right now. Both still teetering on the edge so to speak.

One team looking not to be sent home early and one team trying to keep itself from completely falling apart.

It’s going to be very important for the Bows to not only make the WAC tournament, but they will have to win it to save two things:

    1) Trapasso’s image on the fans. He does have to meet with AD Jim Donovan after the season to discuss a future that looks to be short-lived should the hardships of the Bows continue.

    2) Favor with the thousands of “Johnny Come Latelys” that showed up at Murakami Stadium this season. While many here are regulars at a lot of the home baseball games over the years, we all know those that remain loyal are not enough to pay the bills.

By the end of the year the baseball revenue will significantly be higher than probably several of the past years combined, but it will be next to impossible to retain the attention of those that never knew you existed prior to a good winning streak earlier in the year. Unfortunately it is through these masses revenue is generated.

However, ultimately the untimely implosion by the pitching staff lies on the coaching staff. Adjustments? Proper motivation? Yes this is division one baseball, but these kids are still student athletes and still need to be coached.

If the baseball team can return to Hawaii with winning this series or at least splitting it, then all may be forgiven and there will be a new breath of fresh air once the WAC tournament starts.

Return to Hawaii by losing the series 1-3 or getting swept and the damage could be irrevocable for the immediate future.

  188. Kazz May 7, 2009 5:43 pm

Best thing to do now is to end the game with as much positives as they can through their strengths and take that momentum into tomorrow’s game.

    Nevada defeated NMSU.

***A BEATDOWN BATTLE AT BULLDOG SOFTBALL STADIUM TOMORROW***

Both facing elimination, our Rainbow Wahine face conference foe Nevada at 1:30pm HST.

The survivor to play the lose of the Fresno State and LaTech game.

    =========

The Lady Wolfpack have had our number over the past few seasons. Just this year we were able to snap a 7 game losing streak we held against Nevada.

Nevada comes in packing major hit with the WAC Pitcher of the Year 2009 in Kate Holverson, but not to be out-done we come in yielding the WAC Freshman of the Year 2009 in Stephanie Ricketts.

Ricketts knows about the Wolfpack VERY WELL. Ricketts was pitching a fine game in the first meeting of our regular season series this year. Looking at a win, we gave up several runs giving Nevada the lead, we caught up forcing the game into extra play, another homer late into the 8th or 9th inning (can’t remember off hand) put the game away. Nevada stole one game from us in the series.

The next match up was different as Nevada won 3-1.

We rebounded the next and last game of the doubleheader and the series 3-2.

Ricketts has matured since then. It’s this maturity that puts on an equal level with Nevada giving us a chance to beat them as much as they can beat us.

We cannot afford to strand players on base as much as we did with LaTech. We had six hits against the same LaTech pitcher that struck out 14 of our batters in Ruston earlier in the year and we had a pletora of hits against Boise State.

My keys to this BIG match-up for our Wahine:

-Cannot rely on the home runs. I do not feel comfortable that we can play a “shoot-out” against Nevada. We also cannot get base hits for the sake of base hits, Nevada has good infielders. We need to “out-coach” Nevada on this one.

-Solid defensive stops at 2nd base and at the SS position.

-Stephanie Ricketts needs to believe she has matured since the first time she played against Nevada. She has gotten MUCH better and she has shown she can close games when needed. She has displayed she can take her game into several “gears” and now it’s time to use it, if needed, against a real good opponent.

from WAC site (current conference records)-

    Nevada 9-6
    San Jose State
    New Mexico State 9-7
    Louisiana Tech 11-9
    Hawai‘i 9-10
    Fresno State 6-10
    Sacramento State 5-9

I don’t know the tourney rules. Top six?

warrior bballers need to win at least 3 games against fresno st to be in the tourny. if they split must wait to see how other WAC games is completed. anything less then they are out of it.

The other day, there were props for Jason and Kelli on their imminent graduation. Isn’t CRW a recent graduate too? ASU? Congratulations to all!

Thanks for remembering me, brew. 🙂

I wouldn’t say recent; more like soon-to-be. My convocation ceremony is one of the last ones to be held and, of course, Dear Leader is coming to speak at our commencement ceremony next Wednesday. The Final Exam period started today here in Sun Devil land and the only one I have scheduled for is on Monday. After that I’m done.

I also send out my congrats to Jason and Kelli for their soon-to-be graduation.

    ST,

    RE: Wahine Softball

There were subtle changes to the lineup in today’s win over BSU. Granted BSU is not as strong as LaTech, but the Wahine went with Stacy Yamada as the catcher and Traci Yoshikawa at SS in the loss to LaTech.

Today against BSU they went back to Katie Grimes as the catcher and Julie Franklin at SS.

Now, I’m just assuming that neither the play at the catcher position and at SS played a significant role in the loss to LaTech last night as it seemed more like a case of not getting our runners home.

    Just something I noticed.

Any thoughts ST? For a while I wondered what led to Grimes playing less and splitting time with Yamada at catcher through the second half of the year.

What do you think they’ll come out with tomorrow against Nevada?

  227. 4012101kadvisor May 7, 2009 7:18 pm

    To Buffoman:

Hawaii gets big, slow, clumsy, basketball players; that, are really uncordinated. Like the big local player (with the wide stance, flailing arm defense that was a foul magnet) to the former mainland to UH recruit (who was in a traffic accident, punch out the BYU player who elbowed him, cannot put the ball in from underneath the basket) type players. Hawaii is known for that! Year after year! Look for this big boy to get the ball, game time, to flail; that, ball, and dribble that ball off his foot, or knee, and sit! Nash hasn’t shown me that he can develop big players. Nash won’t develop his game.

Wallace couldn’t help those big boys, even though he once coached Robert Parish. Wallace took players from ok to good, good to very good and very good to excellent (at best). Nash took ok to ok and good to good (or worse) and so-forth.

He’ll probably gather splinters on the bench and get his 2 to 8 points and 0 to 5 rebounds per game in D1. Depends on the off-season conditioning and coaching (don’t count on Nash for much).

  228. brew808 May 7, 2009 7:24 pm

Yamada and Yoshikawa –> whY??? IMHO 🙄

I’m assuming you mean “why play them at all”?

Short stop was one of the positions of concern this season. Coach Coolen went with quite a few players with Franklin playing most of it. Eventually Traci Yoshikawa got the spot as Coach Coolen attributed her communication with 3rd baseman Clare Warwick as one of the reasons. At times she (Yoshikawa) presented some “excitement” at SS and I mean “exciting” in the “oh man, that was close” kind of way.

As for Yamada at the catcher postion, I cannot personally say why or why not. But by the way she played during her starts I really did see anything to pose the question “why?”. Does Yamada have a stronger arm than Grimes to get the ball out to 2nd when needed, I can’t say.

Basically, I don’t question their abilities to start. There really is no SIGNIFICANT “weakness” per se.

Again, by reading the “play by play” notes off the WAC website, nothing caught my attention that would indicate that the SS and the catcher during the LaTech game did anything to cause us to lose the game. Reading the play by play looked more of a issue of finishing with having runners in scoring position.

Looking closer into the LaTech game last night, we were knocking on their door, but LaTech turned off the lights and went to the back of the house to hide and eventually it caught up to us.

At Doral it was his putter he tossed.
Bayhill, it was his driver he slammed at the tee-box and at Quail Hollow it was inconsistency that made him bitter-sweet despite a dramatic comeback V.

At 1:10 pm today, Tiger Woods will hope to get off to a better start after missing 8 putts of 12-feet or less in the opening round of the TPC Sawgrass.
Those missed putts were the difference between a 65 and the frustrating 71 Woods shot at the Stadium Course.

Yesterday, the Sawgrass played kind, soft and gentle after late night showers softened its fairways and greens.
Tiger didnt have major problems with his tee-shots or ball-striking as he reached most of the greens in regulation.
But it was his putting that left him with a pain and grimace seldom seen from the number one golfer in the world.

Tiger bounced an incredible shot on the infamous ‘Island’ 17th that rolled inside 9-feet to the hole with a level green and 102″ of carpet awaiting a fist pumping birdie.
The ball hit the inside-edge of the lip, circled the cup and spun out to an astonished, bent-over, Tiger Woods.

Look, there were great performances out there today and some were making birdies look easy on a course that is the REAL rock-star….but, dont fool yourself, magic surrounds a guy named Tiger and his gallery of fans that line the 7,245 yard stadium course says it all.

position players at SS and catcher are weak hitting, Grimes has the strongest arm of the lot…Franklin is a defensive liability and weak hitting, reason she got benched…Yoshikawa plays better defense compared to Franklin and Gonzalez has a foot injury (she plays SS) but not much of a hitter. Grimes flat out can’t hit, so Yamada was given a chance…Boise is a first year program so it was a chance for Coolan to see if Franklin and Grimes can hit peak and hit, if they can’t hit Boise, I am sure the other two will start again on Friday…Wahine need clutch hitting and runs from one to nine…lacking in Tech game…Kazz mojo not working, use more chicken blood and some feathers…

Frankllin has a difficult time with ground balls, she is 6′, not bending at the knees and waist properly to square herself with the ball, lots of errors under her glove…against Boise at home she showed a very strong arm, unfortunately she has to field the ball before throwing it and that is where the problem is at.

Just getting home from a full round of meetings concerning the ceded lands of Kaupe’a. Wow did I get an ear full from Kaniki Kanahele! I felt so energized by what this man said tonight before, during and after the meetings. Aahhh…island politics, what a kick!

CRW ~ I’m sorry I don’t know you very well, but I have enjoyed reading your posts over time. I congratulate you for your accomplishment in the Academic world. I believe that you and Jason are our future, and it makes me feel proud to be able to say that.

I wish you the best in what ever you choose to do with your education, and I hope to see you in Vegas come September!

Whoops…sorry, Kanaki not Kaniki…ho, time for go sleep my face!

Thank you everyone for your congrats and well wishes!

Liz — Yep. I’ll be in Vegas with the rest of the Tsaiko gang. Since I don’t know where I’ll be come the start of the football season, the UNLV game is the only one I’m committed to so far. The other road games will be decided as the time comes closer.

Pauoa Boy — Living 30 miles from the Tempe and Scottsdale hotspots goes a ways in making sure I stay focus. Either limit my exposure (self-control) or $80 cab ride home. Easy decision. 🙂

Jason — Congrats on your recognition!

Ralph — I agree with you when you said that it’s time to get a job and life. Working the graveyard shift the past three years put a roof over my head, but it also left me reeling if I wanted to do something that wasn’t during the late afternoon/evening hours. I look forward to transitioning to the 9-5 crowd like the rest of the world.

CRW- are you going to stay in the Valley?
I’m torn between my 40th (in year 41) class reunion in Scottsdale or the Fresno game on Oct. 10! Arrrrrgh!!!

#265- will, I guess that’s ONE way to keep the posts going… sheesh.

  271. Ralph May 8, 2009 12:11 am

    CRW what is your degree?

  272. LizKauai [iMac] Unite and Conquer! May 8, 2009 12:32 am

    Hi Ralph!
Nitey night and Sweet Rainbow Softball Wahine Dreams!

  273. Committed Road Warrior May 8, 2009 12:35 am

Liz — Not sure. I really don’t wanna stay in the Valley much longer, but if I’m still here come football season, I’m still here. I will jump on the first decent job offer out of town, though.

Ralph — Air Transportation Studies. BAD time to graduate. The airlines are still laying off workers and most of the airport authorities have stopped hiring for now. Looks like I’m up s*** creek for the next year or so…..

  274. Ralph May 8, 2009 12:40 am

CRW it’s a tough job market for all graduates right now…good time to work on a masters degree, in two years the economy should be better and a masters will give you a higher start up job…

Open you wahine softball media guide and start rolling them bones on the wahines and get them ready to play.

    Don’t need all that.

The coaching staff and the veteran members of the team will handle that.

  276. Dang big moon… humid night… hard to sleep…
