It’s going to be a busy Wednesday for Greg McMackin and Jim Donovan.
Both are on a business trip in Japan.
On Wednesday morning, they will meet for two hours with officials from Tokai University. In the afternoon, they will meet with business leaders to discuss a joint Hawai‘i/Japan soccer project.
McMackin and Donovan then depart from Japan. Because they’re flying across the international dateline, they arrive in Hawai‘i Wednesday morning, ready for a full day of work.
“We’re building bridges,” McMackin said of the trip, which is not being paid by state or UH funds.
Donovan said the trip already has led to:
• A proposal in which UH football telecasts will be shown on a delayed basis in Japan.
• Several of Japan’s college football teams will attend UH clinics. Some are scheduled to attend UH’s spring practice in April.
• Paving the way to sell H logo merchandise in Japan.
The itinerary shows McMackin and Donovan have met with officials from NBA Japan, NFL Japan and Japan’s college football association.

There are two reasons why UH feels comfortable about the running back position this spring: Hogan “Bulldoza” Rosehill and Kainoa Carlson.
Rosehill, who is 6 feet and 225 pounds, shut down Manti Te’o — in basketball. In the 2008 state final, Rosehill, a Kamehameha-Hawai‘i forward, scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a 41-38 loss to Punahou. Te’o was held to six points. Rosehill was named to The Advertiser’s 2008 All-State basketball team.
Carlson, who is 6 feet and 220 pounds, transferred from Pacific Lutheran, where he played as a freshman.

Here’s an e-mail from John Smith of ProKick Australia:
ProKick Australia have trained and assessed Alex (Dunnachie) to the standard required for a Div 1 scholarship.
Alex is also an excellent student, and all admission paperwork has been processed.
Alex’s best recorded punt so far has been 82 yards from boot to the ball hitting the ground, with a 5.65 hangtime.
We will be releasing a press release this week.

  4. WarriorMojo March 3, 2009 12:56 am

    Top ten, baby!

    Night shift working.

    Pepa, you stretching those hammies?

  5. Stephen Tsai March 3, 2009 12:58 am

While Pepa wants to play guard, I think UH hasn’t given up on him being a tackle.

  6. Stephen Tsai March 3, 2009 1:06 am

    From the previous post:
The problem with a non-qualifier going to a JC is the clock keeps ticking. If a player can earn an AA in four semesters, which is 48 transferrable credits, then he’s good to go.
But many don’t take the necessary classes.
And if a player redshirts, then it gets tougher. That player then would be at a JC for at least five semesters. That means he would need to earn an AA and have 60 transferrable credits.
Some guys just can’t catch up.

  7. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER March 3, 2009 1:09 am

Ah- new blog. Now I can say Nitey Nite and SWEET Warrior dreams!

  8. WarriorMojo March 3, 2009 1:17 am

So, ST, has there been any clarification of Blaze’s status? Barring an additional injury year, is he a senior this year?

  9. al ™ March 3, 2009 1:22 am

mojo….been working some midnight hours eh?

  10. Stephen Tsai March 3, 2009 1:35 am

    Re: Blaze.
If I’m making the call, he gets two more years (including a medical hardship).
I don’t believe his clock should have started in 2005 because he was at a non-football-playing school.
But I don’t get to make the call.
The people who do believe otherwise.
    But I think they’re wrong.

  11. al ™ March 3, 2009 2:00 am

hogan bulldoza rosehill….was tough post player. i imagine he plays football the same way. i envisioned him more so as a linebacker type. but, hey running back in our system works too.

  12. WarriorMojo March 3, 2009 2:09 am

Thanks, ST, although that’s a bummer for Blaze.

Al, yeah, been pretty busy lately. Hope everything’s good with you and yours.

Well, time to get horizontal. Got court in the morning, then hopefully a quick run to Best Buy for the new U2 album before a conference call at 11:00. Hopefully, that finishes in time for me to catch the Wai Tsai Show at 12:00. Then court again at 1:30 followed by a trip to Best Buy if I couldn’t get there in the morning. Night, owls.

  13. al ™ March 3, 2009 2:30 am

  20. letsgowarriors March 3, 2009 4:23 am

i said it earlier, hosan rosehill was an intriguing walkon to me. he reminded me of a keone reyes type basketball player. thick and strong, yet he had enough quickness to actually dominate a game. if anything, he should provide a spark on special teams.

  21. wafan March 3, 2009 4:25 am

    Jake Ingram. 3 questions.

who is your best friend on the team, coach or player?

who is the guy you most admire in the Warrior program, coach or player?

name 2 guys you’re pulling for to have a awesome year this 09 season.
    thank you.

    thanks

  25. G (China) March 3, 2009 4:40 am

    ST,

Thanks for the great Info. Pretty inspiring what JD and Mack is doing there in Japan. Any chance in coming to China? Football is still a developing sport here but who knows what you can find with 1.3 billion people around. I would look in Inner Mongolia…guys there are the tallest in the world and they play a crazy tackling games with live animals.

  26. bighilofan2 March 3, 2009 4:42 am

i don’t get it about our 3 guyz going arizona.
i’ll bet all 3 or 2 or 1 have $/timing issue about taking the SAT every month now till June to boost their scores. i hope they all come UH

  27. G (China) March 3, 2009 4:44 am

I kind of wish there was a written format of these video guests. Internet speed is too slow for me to check it out. Are there written archives of these discussions?

  28. G (China) March 3, 2009 4:53 am

With all the players UH has in the stables, it feels like the 11-3 campaign with Colt and company. A lot of unknowns but solid potential play makers on offense and defense. Hopefully, UH can air it out a bit more like we’re accustomed too.

  29. bighilofan2 March 3, 2009 5:29 am

    Hiya G in China

it’ll be nice watching each of our Warriors living out their dreams this season. wishing them all the best life has to offer, and above all, wishing them love. 😉

    Happy Girls Day guyz. 😀

couldn’t help myself, watching Dolly and Bette on youtube. 😆

    Oh try wait….

Sounds like an interesting trip for JD and Mack. Hoping it leads to some fruitful ventures down the road.

“Bulldoza” is a great nic for a FB.
Glad Kainoa Carlson left PLU (esp. since #2 son is playing DE now); the guy was a load when he was a Pun.

Maybe that’s a roundabout way for more buffanblu to get to UH. Hmmm…who else could come back in 2-3 years?

    OK, now HiHo fo’ real!

  40. Garret March 3, 2009 6:57 am

Dunnachie sounds like a great pickup for UH…he’ll be a weapon for the Warriors! I would say that I look forward to seeing him play, if it wasn’t for the fact that he’ll come on only after Warrior drives stall.

  41. Stretch March 3, 2009 6:58 am

for whoever can remember something one hour later, Colt will be on 1420 about 815am.

  42. Stretch March 3, 2009 6:58 am

whitey – so what’s the plan for Maui?? everyone needs a tour guide for the darkside.

  43. Garret March 3, 2009 7:02 am

Great news in the Advertiser today about how Under Armour sales have been doing well…I’ll bet Kazz gave a big boost to their totals! It is nice that sales passed the expectations for UA, which means that they are making more money than they had planned…which also means that UH would have been able to get more money from them if these sales figures had been forecast.

UA compares sales per capita, which probably also means that they pay UH based on the number of people in Hawaii vs. their other team’s markets. Trouble is, Maryland, Texas Tech, Auburn, etc., have a lot more people in their markets. For example, the rights fee UH gets is $125k per year (plus another $315k in marketing) and Maryland gets $3.5 million per year (plus much more marketing money I would guess).

  44. Garret March 3, 2009 7:05 am

Interesting article about how players seem to get slower 40 times while they are in college.

First, there is the nostrum that guys get faster as they get bigger. You hear this nonsense from college strength coaches all the time (bigger! stronger! faster!). Of course, strength coaches are always going to claim that guys will get faster as they go through their programs. That’s how they justify their employment. But in the end, it’s just basic physics. Players grow naturally to a point before their size and speed hit a plateau, then growth must be manufactured. In college, they put on extra muscle or bad weight and tend to get slower, not faster. Let’s not forget, too, that guys get beat up on college and that’s another reason they lose speed. Of course, when they get to the NFL, many ’slow’ college guys are suddenly blazing fast again because they are now playing with guys who are even more beat up.

Second, the high school recruiting camps and combines where guys are measured are complete jokes. Players stand on their tiptoes and get hooked up on their 40 times by corrupt recruiting hacks with quick stopwatch thumbs. It’s tainted by hype and salesmen who have an interest in over-promoting these kids.

Later, they get into college and then sports information directors play with their heights and weights. At USC, adding up to 1.5 inches was standard operating procedure.

  45. Kekoa March 3, 2009 7:26 am

    Good Morning Tsaiko Tsquare Rooters!

Jake on the hot spot today, Yah Hootie!

Too bad he won’t be snapping for the ‘Aussie.’ Jake could have done a number of things while the ball was hanging high:

1 – Take a leisurely stroll down field to properly pulverize the return man.

2 – Stop and grab a spam musubi during that stroll.

3 – Have a meaningful conversation with the officials along the way.

4 – Take time to wave at sjmacro, myki, or Homey up in section F, and blow kisses to BHF near the tunnel.

…but none of the above compares to having an opportunity to *hang* with the men of the elite NFL Sunday Club!

    Good Luck Jake!

  46. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER March 3, 2009 7:37 am

JAKE- at this point in your bid for the NFL draft, do you have any indications or hunches about your future as a Pro football player?

  47. Kekoa March 3, 2009 7:39 am

Ever since G (China) mentioned the fact that we should look to recruiting from inner Mongolia because of the size and toughness of the men of that region…I’m thinking, Hmmm…fo’ real kine Bull Dozers!

  54. haka March 3, 2009 7:45 am

Special teams has been needing a kick in the arse for a while now and Dunnachie sounds like he has the foot to boot. 82 yards on the fly is down under and over and back. It obviously will not be the norm, but if he can control his direction and hang time, it will take a lot of preessure off the offense and can jack up the team to know they have a difference maker on special teams.

All I can say is…Awwwwright! Go Warriors!

  55. Kekoa March 3, 2009 7:46 am

    Q for Jake:

Who was the most rascal team member (or coach) of all your years on the team? Who made everyone laugh the most when it was time to release some tension?

  56. 702WarriorNation March 3, 2009 7:46 am

We had a great time with Garret’s family, Momo and Mrs. Momo at cc/brunch on Sunday. Both young girls are as advertised – beautiful, smart and fun to be around. Hey, what can you say when boss and I got a kiss and hugs from Faith unsolicited. Enjoyed talking story but as we all experience at cc, time passes too quickly. Guess the best item was the omelets. Boss said the chef was taking 6 orders at a time and got it right/perfect. Hope the gaming tables are kind to Momo too.

re post #20, whatever happened to Keone Reyes? When he was at Kaimuki, he was quoted as saying he wanted to play football for UH. I thought he went to a JC in the Bay Area, and there was a chance he would transfer to UH as a RB.

22Lon/Toy ~ The Warriors play on Maui on the 11th of April. The Warrior Spring Bowl isn’t until April 25th. We will have a Tsaiko T-gate prior to both. Stick that on your planning calender.

What’s the update on if and when your younger brother Lucas will be joining the Warriors as your replacement as long snapper?

Interesting that Lucas was even listed among the newcomers in the 2008 Warrior Football Media Guide.

    Mahalo!

    Jake,

How is your weight-gaining program going? How much weight do you think you can gain between the combine and UH’s Pro Day? Are you working with a nutritionist or following some type of program for your weight gain?

Is your agent covering the costs of your training and weight program until the NFL draft?

  81. Kekoa March 3, 2009 9:59 am

Homey ~ We were thinking Breakfast T-gate would be good. JJ usually represents the Portuguese Sausage makers of Makawao. Pancakes were discussed here of course…and what about Sweet bread French toast?

  82. homey ℞ March 3, 2009 10:01 am

  83. homey ℞ March 3, 2009 10:02 am

  84. homey ℞ March 3, 2009 10:06 am

Jake – Have you ever tried long distance snapping? How far can you long-snap a football?

  85. A-House March 3, 2009 10:23 am

speaking of Dunnachie – was talking to a “loyal UH fan”, except when we play BYU, of different scenarios.

can he “punt” the ball instead of “kicking off”? if so, will it be a free ball after going 10 yards? or just kick the hell out of the ball for height and let UH special teams go for the recovery.

if yes, with the hang time, kick-off receiver will have to “fair-catch” the ball each time or special teams can recover the free ball before the receiver touches the ball inside the 10 yard line.

can Warrior special teams “man-handle” the kick-off receiver while going for the free ball and NOT be penalized?

will UH coaches research this and take advantage of this new “weapon”? bet other teams will go “bananas” trying to determine what the heck is going to happen on kick-off!!!!!!!!!!!!

let’s start a new contest – how far will Dunnachie punt the ball at Provo when they play BYU in 2011?

  86. homey ℞ March 3, 2009 10:31 am

A-House – That’s why it’s called a kickoff. No can punt on a kickoff. However, if it’s a free kick then you can either punt or placekick or I think dropkick.

  87. warriorfanny March 3, 2009 10:35 am

Best wishes to Jake in his NFL career–he has been a solid example of practice perfect makes perfect…an incredible long-snapper.
His daily drills was classic stuff I doubt I will see repeated (Jake should have it on DVD)–unless…his brother was watching and taking notes.

  88. Garret March 3, 2009 10:36 am

    homey,

A player can be on the watch list even if he’s never played a down for his team! All it takes is a nomination from a school’s Sports Information Director…All-America or conference honors are *not* required. The below information is straight from the award’s website.

The new players were added to the Watch List based on various pre-season honors and nominations from the schools’ Sports Information Directors. Although the 113 players now on the Watch List are representative of the nation’s top football linemen, the list is not intended to serve as the actual ballot when first round voting begins in late September.

Great move by JD and MAC on this Japan venture.
    The marketing makes sense.
Japanese tourism is a proven quantity even through this economic downturn and the Honolulu Marathon has emerged as the biggest moneymaker in Hawaii sports.
The HM’s field is comprised by a majority of Japanese nationals.

Given our proximity and the millions of Japanese tourists that vacation in Hawaii annually–this marketing move not only makes CENTS-but is long overdue.
Kudos to JD and MAC for taking the initiative!

Bringing in Rosehill and Carlson for a spring audition is a great move by MAC and I suspect Ron Lee.
My feelings are very tentative about our present RB stock given D1A experience and other factors, despite a bonafide 2009 recruiting effort by staff, notably Chizz and Green from the JUCO ranks.
On a positive note, it illustrates that MAC n staff are keeping it going 24/7 to restock the cupboards at this position–and SPR is an excellent opportunity for peacocks to strut their feathers and to clinch a limb on the warrior tree.

  104. Jason March 3, 2009 11:07 am

homey is right, although he mixed up some terminology. A kickoff is a free kick, but kickoffs in particular are restricted to place kicks and drop kicks — no punts. Only when it is a kickoff after a safety may the ball be punted.

Also, on free kicks, you have to give the returner the opportunity to catch the ball. You can’t just take him out and recover it yourself.

  105. kapakahi March 3, 2009 11:07 am

    ST,

Any update on Jack Sula’s prospects of joining the Warriors?

Oh, and Happy Birthday to Betty and WreckinEyez!

  107. warriorfanny March 3, 2009 11:08 am

This Aussie punter, Alex Dunnachie, sounds like a stud that can boom it skyward with incredible hangtime and distance.
Punting it high presumes the ball leaves his foot in a high trajectory making it tougher to block.
If he can can punt under the gun in the requisite time from snap to boot–we have something exceptional in the making.

If MAC n staff can develope a long-snapper with Ingram type skills n speed we could see an incredible duo never seen in Manoa. Yikes!

  112. FloridaTed March 3, 2009 11:20 am

Dunnachies numbers are those of a top notch professional soccer goalie, almost unreal, if that’s really true. With those numbers, regardless from where we punt, the return guy will be surrounded by Warriors everytime he fair catches the ball, if it’s not in the endzone anyways.

  113. duffer March 3, 2009 11:21 am

    d) Justification for the price hike, for aging facilities.

BG working with Senior Chief on these issues. Need your input for the future, so the Morale Support Directorate is made aware of the situation.

Kalaeloa Football field was not needed for Doris Sullivan’s football camp. The Navy has scored major points with the community for allowing the use of the football and baseball fields, plus the bowling alley.

However, if the Navy recruiting office was smart and wants to recruit athletes like the young QB from Kapolei that led the Academy to victory…they should budget some money to purchase some Recruiting *Tent* space from Doris. Her events draw the top college coaches to the islands, and showcase the local talent.

  143. Jason March 3, 2009 1:13 pm

No, kickoffs are defined as free kicks (that is, place kick, drop kick, or punt), but with the added rule that you cannot punt a kickoff. Kickoffs start a half or follow a TD or FG.

The kick after safety is also a free kick, but the punt restriction is not in place, because it is a kick after safety, not a kickoff.

  153. Wayne O. March 3, 2009 1:51 pm

Basketball is one thing. Football is another. There’s a big difference between finesse and physical contact. So I have to withold any judgment about the 2 running backs that you mentioned. I’ve never heard of these guys or haven’t seen them on film. But you never know.
They might turn out to be okay. College football news has predicted that UH will be 4th or 5th in the WAC this year, behind Boise St., Fresno St., Nevada, and Louisiana Tech. I wouldn’t get our hopes up too high. I’m not impressed w/ our offensive line and our Quarterback situation. I think Alexander holds on to the ball too long. Just look at the sacks last year. We led the nation in that category. And the turnovers. You know the story. “You are what we think they are!!!!

    UH-UNLV Game Tickets for Tsai-kos

Rich2176 has been busy but will be turning his attention to negotiating and purchasing a block of game tickets soon, as he did in 2007. Of course, he needs to know how many.

He will be providing Tsai-kos with tickets at cost, so a minimum count is needed. So whether you request via the survey or email him directly, please do so soon.

When he is ready, I will turn over the collected survey requests to Rich2176. At that point, confirmation emails, payment, and arrangements are strictly between you and Rich2176.

    The survey is at:
    http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=_2b0TEhRn0xTX82JQRdJ2gyQ_3d_3d

The survey also collects requests for las vegas’ restaurant tailgate and optional buses. Also Friday night Cattle Call interest and hotel location info–so you can see who else might be staying at your hotel. 🙂

  190. SteveM March 3, 2009 4:12 pm

September 18 Programming Note: It is certain there will be a Tsai-ko gathering on Friday, Sept. 18 from around 6:00 PM. las vegas is still working on where, depending on estimated count. We’ll gather the numbers later since Rich2176’s ticket numbers are more critical at this moment.

The Friday night gathering is to allow Tsai-kos from Hawaii and the mainland (international too) to finally meet. Part of the program will be small group introductions.

It is apparent that not all Tsai-kos would tailgate together on Saturday. We have UH Alumni Association tailgate, SportsHawaii tailgate, Boyd tailgate, our tailgate, hotel and travel agency tailgates, etc.. SO, the Friday night gathering is planned for everyone who makes it to Vegas in time….

Can see this mentioned on the blog earlier today:

CLEARWATER, Fla. — The Coast Guard today called off the search for two NFL players and a third man lost at sea off the Florida coast after their boat capsized during a fishing trip.

The Coast Guard said it doesn’t believe anyone is on the surface of the water and the search would end at sundown. Still missing in rough, cold water were Oakland Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper, free-agent defensive lineman Corey Smith and former South Florida player William Bleakley.

“We’re extremely confident that if there are any survivors on the surface of the water that we would have found them,” Coast Guard Capt. Timothy Close said.

God be with them at this point.

I can’t imagine how their families, friends, and teammates must feel like having a 3rd party pretty much tell you they will not be found.

    Jason,

I enjoy a baked potato, but they take so long to cook that sometimes I’ll just toss one in the oven and by the time it’s done… who knows…

  217. Jason March 3, 2009 6:36 pm

I take some red-skinned potatoes, slice them up, and toss them with garlic and olive oil. Toss it in the oven at 400, they get soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. Mmm.

  218. Kazz March 3, 2009 6:38 pm

Ok I screwed up that Mitch Hedberg joke.

It’s supposed to go like this:

“I love baked potatoes but sometimes they take so long to cook that I’ll just throw one in the oven even when I am not hungry and by the time its done… who knows…

    Mitch Hedberg was the man!

    More Hedberg-isms:

“I went to the store to buy a candle holder but they didn’t have one so I bought a cake.”

“An escalator can’t break down. They only become part time stairs. They should put up a sign that says “Escalator are stairs for now. Sorry for the convienence.”

“I used to do drugs. I still do. But I used to also”

“Im sick of following my dreams, so ask them where they’re going and hook up with them later.”

“I like Kit Kat Bars. Except when I am with four or more people.”

“I like rice. Rice is good when you are hungry and you want to eat 2,000 of something.”

  219. labrat March 3, 2009 6:39 pm

82 yds. Holy crappa moly. I can’t see that far. And 5.65 hangtime. Whoa. I can remember bringing a stop watch to a game just to time Jim Asmus. I think the wonder from down under may be better.

  220. old warrior March 3, 2009 6:40 pm

Regarding punters and punting, the proof of a good punter is in the game, when the opponents are coming at you. Not so much during warmups or tryouts.

wow Wreck was born on a day after my birthday. Happy girls day.

  222. Kazz March 3, 2009 6:53 pm

    More Hedberg-isms:

“I walked passed a drycleaner’s place at 2am and there was a sign that said ‘Sorry We’re Closed’. That’s too much. You are a dry cleaner and it’s 2am. I do not expect you to be open. There is no need to apologize.”

“I like to hold the microphone cord like this (proceeds to pinch the cord) and then let go. That way you hear ten jokes all at once.”

“I mumble when I talk and sometimes it gets me into trouble. I mumble all the time. I was hiking with some friends, I said something and my buddy said, ‘What?’. So I repeated myself and he said ‘What?’ again. Next thing you know I am yelling ‘THAT TREE IS FAR AWAY!'”

“My first job interview was weird. It had a bunch of written questions with only a yes or no answer. The first question was ‘Have you every tried sugar or… PCP?’. I never got the job.”

  223. Jason March 3, 2009 6:59 pm

On a somber note… I attended Spc Walter’s service today and wanted to let you know that the skies, too, dropped their tears upon Borthwick. It was wall to wall people on a workday mid-afternoon. The NG soldiers marched in, one file at a time, to render honors to their fallen comrade. The TAG, deputy TAG, CofS…everyone was there, including a good part of Kalihi. She was a genuine role model for her peers in her short life, and will continue to do so in their memories. She did a lot in the time that she had. She was a warrior in the brotherhood and sisterhood of warrior-soldiers. I have no higher praise. I didn’t know her personally. But, the faces there told her story.

I feel really bad for Samson, as Miami’s new system is not suited to his strengths.

The Dolphins’ projected starting offensive line now looks like this:

Left tackle Jake Long – 6-foot-7, 310 pounds

Left guard Justin Smiley – 6-foot-3, 310 pounds

    Center Jake Grove – 6-foot-4, 300 pounds

Right guard Donald Thomas – 6-foot-4, 310 pounds

Right tackle Vernon Carey – 6-foot-5, 350 pounds

The key reserves are recently signed Joe Berger (6-5, 305 pounds), who will work at all three interior spots, holdover tackles Brandon Frye and Nate Garner, swingmen Ikechuku Ndukwe (tackle and guard) and Andy Alleman (center and guard), and Samson Satele, who will likely play guard and center if he remains a Dolphin through 2009.

  240. Garret March 3, 2009 9:42 pm

Jason said yesterday that Samson was a good player, but not a good fit in Miami’s system…and he was correct of course. Samson’s biggest strengths are his mobility and athleticism…but Parcells wants offensive linemen who are bigger than Samson and *not* mobile.

It’s possible Satele could get shopped and eventually traded closer to the draft because he’s a proven starter who still has promise, and will only make a little over $1 million over the final two years of his deal.

Satele’s strengths, which are his pulling ability and athleticism, just doesn’t suit the style of line this regime has traditionally built wherever they’ve gone.

According to one personnel guy I’ve talked to, who has worked with and against Bill Parcells, the Tuna likes his linemen to be beasts in the running game. He wants their best trait to be their ability to provide a respectable initial push. Parcells doesn’t care if the linemen are prospects some scouts label “phone booth” players, a description used for linemen with limited mobility.

The Tuna likes girth, and wants power behind it because he prefers his runners to be one cut type who take what they see, go down hill, and fall forward for an extra two yards.

I’m glad that Under Armour is sponsoring this trip to send some prominent college football coaches to visit with the troops in the Middle East.

Texas’ Mack Brown and four other current head football coaches will be visiting U.S. military bases and personnel later this year in the Middle East.

“I have decided to go for a number of reasons,” Brown said today in confirming an ESPN report. “We have such a great country and a safe country because the young men and women overseas are fighting for our freedom and fighting for the war against terrorists. And at the same time, there’s a great military influence in the state of Texas and it touches the families on our team.

The tour, sponsored by Under Armour, will be a Fiesta Bowl reunion of sorts with Ohio State’s Jim Tressel joining Brown. Also on the tour: Houston Nutt of Ole Miss, Troy Calhoun of Air Force and Rick Neuheisel of UCLA. Former Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville, who made the first tour last season, will be returning, as well.

The coaches will leave in late May, according to ESPN, and spend a week
traveling to Afghanistan, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

  245. Garret March 3, 2009 9:49 pm

Texas really is pushing recruiting to be earlier and earlier…this directly affects all college football programs, even UH.

Fresh off a top-five national recruiting class, Brown and his staff have received pledges from 19 juniors. And we haven’t even hit spring break.

“It’s uncharted territory,” gushed Bobby Burton, editor of Rivals.com, which follows recruiting like Labradors do doves. “I don’t think anybody’s ever done this much early recruiting.”

Mack’s off to such a rush that Rivals won’t even officially rank players from 1 to 250 until next week. Right now, they’re all lumped into a 250-member group that includes 11 of Texas’ 19 commitments . No other school has more than three .

And Brown isn’t rounding up pledges from just any 19 players. Most consider Denton Guyer defensive tackle Taylor Bible and Waco Midway safety Ahmad Dixon as locks to be five-star recruits. Burton guesses seven of the future Longhorns are blue-chippers.

  246. BG March 3, 2009 9:49 pm

    wilco, out…

  247. Garret March 3, 2009 9:50 pm

Last weekend Texas had their second Junior Day. This weekend they will have a huge coaching clinic.

Without question, Mack is breaking new ground in a field that he has long tilled. He wasn’t dubbed Coach February for nothing. His staff will play host to 600 to 1,000 high school coaches for an invaluable three-day clinic this week, something Mack started at Tulane.

  248. Garret March 3, 2009 9:52 pm

Texas offers their in-state players before any of the out-of-state schools can evaluate them, which gives them a HUGE advantage. UH should be able to evaluate the local players in Hawaii and give offers early, getting to the recruits before the mainland schools.

Consequently, Texas is rounding up some of the state’s elite talent before out-of-state schools can do their homework and properly evaluate these players. That’s where Brown’s 11 years on the job here and his unparalleled success on the field are paying off.

  249. brew808 March 3, 2009 9:54 pm

ST – Very good Wai&Tsai show today! Jake Ingram was an excellent guest and very well spoken. It’s no surprise that he did well on the Wonderlic Test! Best of luck to Jake playing at the next level, and beyond! 😀

BTW – you looked nice in your maroon polo shirt. Of course, your co-host, the Princess always looks terrific and really makes he show work! 😀 😯 😆

  250. Garret March 3, 2009 9:55 pm

Early commits save recruiting budget money AND helps recruits focus on school and graduate early instead of having to take trips and spend so much time for the recruiting process. I remember that Billy Ray was an early commit to UH last season and he graduated early so that he could enroll at UH in January and go through Spring Practice. One other nice thing about players that enroll in school early…you don’t have to worry about schools trying to poach those recruits!

The early commitment offers any number of perks. Juniors can disregard the usual distractions and hounding from other coaches. They can relax and concentrate on their senior seasons. Brown said Tuesday that Texas spends the least amount of money on recruiting in the Big 12 or at least “is in the bottom three.”

Players also can focus on their schoolwork, with an eye on enrolling at Texas at mid-term and acclimating to college football sooner. Twelve UT recruits did so a year ago. Eight more showed up this January.

  260. Garret March 3, 2009 10:13 pm

Miami has locked up the people they think that will be the starters on the OL, with their contracts lasting for at least the next 4 years…unfortunately, Samson doesn’t have that type of long-term deal.

By signing former Raiders center Jake Grove to a five-year contract Tuesday, the Dolphins now have five potential starters locked into contracts with four or more years left.

It isn’t yet a foregone conclusion that Grove will be the starting center just yet, given that he’ll first need to beat out Samson Satele for the job. But by giving him a deal worth nearly $30 million (with $14.5 guaranteed), it is clear that remains the hope.

At 6-4, 300 pounds, Grove is nearly the same size as Satele — but the team believes he possesses a skill set that will be better suited to handle some of the big-bodied nose tackles playing in the AFC East.

  261. Garret March 3, 2009 10:14 pm

I hope that Miami would trade Samson if they decide they just want him for depth…he can be very useful in another offense.

If Satele sticks around (he could become potential trade bait), he would also provide very strong depth at guard and center, especially given that he is still a solid player with loads of potential. Miami was looking to upgrade at center because of Satele’s difficulty in dealing with the bigger nose tackles.

Between Satele and newly signed Joe Berger, the Dolphins also have the type of depth at guard and center that could keep them from becoming vulnerable in the case of injuries.

  262. Garret March 3, 2009 10:16 pm

One more article out of Miami…

Remember these names and in this order:

Jake Long, Justin Smiley, Jake Grove, Donald Thomas, Vernon Carey.

That is the look of the Dolphins 2009 offensive line now that Grove has signed a five-year deal worth $29 million with $14 million in guarantees. That is the look of the offensive line since the Dolphins retained Carey with a deal that is reportedly worth up to $42 million with $14 million in guarantees.

Also consider that Satele, the starting center the past two years, now becomes a swing guy, someone who can play either guard or center. He will compete for a starting job, no doubt about it. But I don’t see him beating out a healthy Grove. He has a better chance of winning a starting job at right guard. And if he doesn’t, he’s still a valuable depth guy with a lot of game experience.

  265. Garret March 3, 2009 10:38 pm

    Kekoa,

Here in San Diego we got to Target and Costco all the time…we buy bulk things at Costco but some things are cheapest at Target with reliable quality (baby items, some household supplies, electronics, clothing on sale, etc.). It all depends, especially on what goes on sale that particular Sunday.

I’m happy to be with this program called e-rewards that e-mails me surveys to fill out on a variety of subjects. They really target me with surveys on technical issues, which is fine with me. Between December and February I earned enough points to redeem *3* Target gift cards, each worth $50! I gave them to Lori and she loves going to Target even more than normal now.

HA reports that Pepperdine will drop 2 sports, men track and women swim and diving teams…JD has a tough job cutting the red ink without cutting any sports program….maybe he could push the time line on completing the Ching complex and rent out the stadium for HS football and track to the ILH and OIA. rent should be cheaper than Aloha stadium, closer to the schools, and the fans would be closer in a smaller stadium….be like aloha stadium, keep the revenue for parking and concessions….

Garret’s Miami posts on Samson Satele makes me wonder, if samson is too small as an nfl center, what can Estes bring to the table as an nfl draft choice. Isn’t he smaller than Samson?

Garret’s Miami posts on Samson Satele makes me wonder, if Samson is too small as an nfl center, what can Estes bring to the table as an nfl draft choice. Isn’t he smaller than Samson?

You’re right Ralph, Estes would probably be on the smallish side for an NFL center. However, he is a pretty sound technician and for the most part plays with good leverage and balance. He would probably need to get a little bigger and stronger in order to compete at that level, but it wouldn’t be impossible for him to make someone’s team. He is about the same size as Dominic Raiola and Olin Kreutz, but of course both of those guys show exceptional strength in the weight room. The key for Estes is to go to the right team, the way Raiola is with the Lions, and Kreutz with the Bears.

Although Samson could stay and fight it out with the Dolphins, it might be more beneficial for him to play for a team that is looking for someone who possesses the type of skill sets that he can bring to the table. There are teams in the league who favor lighter, more athletic linemen. Guys who can run, pull, trap, and block on the perimeter on screens. Of course Samson could also just gain 10 to 15 pounds. Lock himself in the weightroom and change to an old fashioned powerlifting program, doing heavy squats, deadlift, bench and powercleans. Lift, eat, take protein shakes, and drink beer. Get on the crowther and the sled and learn how to shoot the hip.

Good Morning Tsaikoville! Hope everyone has a good day!

  288. Buffoman March 4, 2009 7:35 am

Pride, I hope Samson does not “bulk up”. He sure reminds me of a tremendous local boy who did some damage on the o-line as center for a “little known” q-back…ummmm, Joe Montana. I believe they won some big games. Samson looks more like that local guy, mobile, smart, fearless and will quietly take care of the q-back (we saw this with Colt).

If he goes to another team with that kind of set up, Samson could replicate what Jesse did, win big games, be a Pro Bowler and win some of those huge rings.

  289. Pride. March 4, 2009 8:00 am

    I agree Buffoman.

  291. Kekoa March 4, 2009 8:08 am

Strange circumstance. On the one hand, we have a UH Wahine coach we can’t get rid of soon enough, and a Men’s coach we desperately need to extend a contract on.

As Ferd points out, we need to prove we have stability in our Men’s program by extending coach Nash’s contract now. This should help give him much needed confidence in his recruitment effort.

I’m thinking Jim Donovan will once again prove to be the man with the plan and get both of our basketball programs back on solid ground.

    Garret:

Your posts regarding U of Texas “junior days” and early commits are great and many of us agree that Coach mack join in this venture in Hawaii.

Unfortunately, for UH and unlike UT, early commits here become targets for BCS schools. While many may keep their “word” some of the more highly regarded recruits may go to where the glamour is more bright. They will find that the HIGHER the BCS school is ranked, the more quality competition from 4 & 5-star players for the same positio – ie, bigger, stronger, faster. My biggest disappointment was Wade committing to ………… at the very last minute. Oh well, at least Ccoach Mack left the door open for a return.

Frank have a happy day! it’s okay, rob drinks enough cold ones for both of you, just drink water and stay safe….

  304. Garret March 4, 2009 10:07 am

    Ralph,

Samson is *not* too small to play center in the NFL! His mobility was why he started as a rookie and he was not too small for that system. Other teams have done very well with smaller, mobile, offensive lines. The trouble is, the management at Miami changed and Parcells’ system is geared for power running with bigger OL where mobility is not valued.

Samson has trade value around the NFL and if the right team needs a center (and doesn’t get a center high in the draft), then they will probably approach Miami to try to trade for Samson. If Miami would trade Samson for a low pick I bet they could trade him within a day…but they have to look out for themselves and hold out for the draft pick they want (see: last year and their plan for Jason Taylor).

Trading Samson might have been the plan all along for Miami’s management, as new management often wants to get “their players” and turns the roster over quickly. Miami cut a lot of players who were Samson’s teammates his rookie season, but the players that have value they trade instead of cut.

One indication of Miami’s plan is how they signed a former high draft pick to be their new starter at C *and* they signed another former high draft pick to provide depth at C/G. If they were going to have Samson be depth at C/G, they didn’t need to sign *two* free agents within a week that can play both positions. Miami’s head coach was the OL coach under Parcells at Dallas and they are getting their type of OL on their team…that doesn’t mean that the other players cannot play well elsewhere in the NFL.

  305. djmitcho March 4, 2009 10:07 am

    Howzit Kekoa,

I don’t know what wafan is getting, but it’s 40 and sunny in Spokane right now.

On Wednesday morning, they will meet for two hours with officials from Tokai University. In the afternoon, they will meet with business leaders to discuss a joint Hawai‘i/Japan soccer project.
McMackin and Donovan then depart from Japan.
