Wednesday's practice

From today’s practice:

• The quarterback order was this: 1) Shane Austin. 2) David Graves. 3) Brent  Rausch. 4) Cayman Shutter. 5) Corey Nielsen.

• And while it appeared Rausch was running with the No. 2s, I was told that was not correct. But all of the QBs got pretty much an equal number of reps.

• With Laupepa Letuli on light duty and Kaina LaCount’s left knee in a brace, Adrian Thomas moved from right guard to right tackle today. Brysen Ginlack played right guard.

• Because defensive right end Paipai Falemalu has a sore shoulder — nothing serious — he will rest during team drills. Kamalu Umu filled in at right end, moving over from left end. Liko Satele continues to work as the No. 1 left end.

• Right wideout Royce Pollard made the catch of the day, leaping for a grab while wearing cornerback Lametrius Davis.

jett

Right wideout Jett Jasper officially kicked off his ASUH presidential campaign yesterday. ASUH is UH’ student organization, and the position he seeks is essentially student body president.

Jasper made the rounds yesterday, distributing “Jett Jasper for President” T-shirts and meeting with sports teams.

Jasper’s a good guy. He formed a Relay for Life team to help raise money for cancer research. He volunteers. And, best of all, he tries to get students to be more involved in campus activities and issues. If his candidacy can get more people to the polls — and, historically, turnout has been pathetic for ASUH elections — then he will have made a significant contribution.

In fairness, other ASUH presidential candidates may submit their photos, and we’ll run them on the blog.

Time to clear out the inventory. We’re giving away two tickets to the April 30 baseball game between Nevada and Hawaii.

To enter, just say: “Please pick me, Avis”

Avis (pictured with Jordyn and Preston) will choose a winner tonight:

Haha!!!! I made it to practice!!!

First smiling face to greet me as I pull in to the parking structure is Coach Mack. Either he remembers me or he just waves hello to everyone. 😎

Dr. Ignacio… Sounds like a cool villian in a James Bond flick!

    GO JETT GO!!!

    ST,

What wouldn’t be “fair” is if us graduated Tsaikos could vote for Jett. 😉

Jett proves that positive contributions to UH as a student athlete go way beyond x’s and o’s…and maybe more importantly so.

    Go Jett!

  9. Stephen Tsai April 14, 2010 6:23 am

    I won’t be in practice until 8.
I have to take my son to school, and he’s still sleeping.
I need to borrow that change-of-periods horn that UH uses.

  10. Stephen Tsai April 14, 2010 6:27 am

    Volleyball team leaves this morning.
If the Warriors sweep, they’re hosting an opening-round match. If they sweep and, say, Stanford loses two, there’s a possibility UH could actually finish tied for first. In that scenario, Stanford still would get the No. 1 seed, but at least UH could use that as an argument for an at-large berth for the final four.

  11. Maverick April 14, 2010 6:31 am

Iwata was wearing the shirt Jett Jasper for Prez on last nights news story. But could only see the name, not the for president with camera angle.

  12. Stretch April 14, 2010 6:31 am

  17. Pomai April 14, 2010 7:07 am

Bulla I really hope that we have a large(not that kine large) turnout of the Tsaikos at this Fridays game, so we can let the Na Wahine Koa know that we appreciate all of their hard work.

    Pomai

That idea making a Tsaiko caravan to Manoa after the practice T-gate really resonates with me! We could have a cheering section like at Sam Boyd Stadium. Since I’m headed for the SoftBow game, gotta practice their cheers… “Hit, run, score!” lidat. Hmmmm, lately, the Wahine have skipped #2. WAIT. Dat didn’t sound right…

thank you, d1 – I was going to post to ST what’s the BIG news from Coach Mack since ST was arriving “late” to morning practice today.

Is it so big that there will be a news conference? Is he going to tell us that the Google owner is now a strong supporter of Warrior football and a hefty contribution will be on the table?

com’on, ST, us stay holding our breath, but can only do so for a few seconds!!!

Likewise I really want to mention one thing concerning this. She is definitely one of the most spectacular girl upon world. Aishwarya Rai seems to be incredibly comfortable all of the periods. İncredibly pretty however stylish. This really is perhaps the biggest purpose why i enjoy her so much. Another factor is actually her wild hair it seems tremendous .

  59. Garret April 14, 2010 11:14 am

The newspaper industry has been hit hard by the declining ad market and the drop in subscribers. The Philadelphia newspapers are the first in the US newspaper industry to launch a legal online betting service. This is an interesting way to get another revenue stream for newspapers…

  64. Garret April 14, 2010 11:41 am

    d1shima,

Considering how people in Hawaii love to bet and how this has a sports-related slant on betting, I would think that a Hawaii newspaper could raise a lot of money this way. However, one has to worry about crossing a line somewhere with a newspaper running a gambling site…if UH got a cut from the profits, I could see this being an attractive service.

Part fantasy league and part sports book, the service enables bettors to pick groups of players from professional baseball, hockey, or basketball leagues. It operates much like the fantasy leagues from Yahoo.com, CBSSports.com (parent company of CNET), and ESPN–except those games are just for fun.

With Instant Fantasy, players pay $5 to $50 a game with the chance to win as much as $90, Greenbaum said. It’s one-on-one, and players can compete with a friend or family member.

  65. Garret April 14, 2010 11:42 am

Online gambling is illegal in the US…unless you have a sports angle to it.

Internet gambling is illegal in the United States, but in 2006, the government made some exceptions involving fantasy sports leagues, E&P reported.

Everyone joins in with “Waheeeneee Homerun!!! BOOM!!!” And we end up by singing (to the tune of “Glory, Glory, Hallelujah”…Glory, glory, hallelujah, and the ball is traveling long…BOOM. The place would go nutz….heheheh

  87. Kazz April 14, 2010 2:37 pm

NCAA Division 1 Softball RPI is out.

Four WAC teams are ranked in the Top 100, the conference is No. 7 of 31 in winning percentage, and — for the first time ever — there are no teams below the Top 200.

Hawai’i leads the way with an RPI of 14 in games completed through April 11 compared to last season at 99 where the Wahine failed to make the NCAAs.

(The rest of the nation can be found in the link on my name.)

Other WAC foes placed in at this:

    -Fresno State at 57
    -SJSU at 88
    -LaTech at 100
    -New Mexico State at 107
    -Nevada at 127
    -Utah State at 154
    -Boise State at 190

  88. Kazz April 14, 2010 2:41 pm

    (from WAC Softball Blogspot)

There are a lot of important factors to remember related to the RPI. First and foremost, it is just one of many tools used to determine the NCAA Tournament field. As we learned from the committee heads of the recent NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tourneys, the RPI was never a deciding factor in determining a team’s worthiness for inclusion. In softball, regional advisory committees evaluate teams year-round.

The WAC is part of the West Region, which combines just two conferences, the other being the Big West. The 2010 advisory committee consists of Hawai’i’s Bob Coolen, Louisiana Tech’s Sarah Dawson, Cal Poly’s Jenny Condon, Cal State Northridge’s Janet Pinneau, and is under the guidance of chair Maria Roth (New Mexico State).

The top five RPI-rated teams in the conference (Hawai’i, Fresno State, San Jose State, Louisiana Tech and New Mexico State) will almost certainly see their RPIs rise, in some cases significantly, down the stretch. Hawai’i has remaining conference series with both Fresno State and Louisiana Tech. Fresno State may have the best chance for a huge RPI leap with games remaining against all four of those teams. Tech still has yet to face both Hawai’i and Fresno State. And New Mexico State gets the Spartans and Bulldogs.

The WAC currently has three wins over the RPI Top 10 this season. Utah State has beaten No. 4 Washington, Fresno State has defeated No. 6 Texas, and San Jose State has a victory over No. 7 Oklahoma.

  91. new wahine softballfan April 14, 2010 2:50 pm

looking forward to the softball game friday, first one for us and the neigbors. Should total around 12 people in our group. so where’s a good place to sit? first base side? third base side? is the seating first come first serve? i hope it is . also i heard it’s free admission.
any others going for the first time? heard the teams exciting to watch.

  92. al April 14, 2010 2:51 pm

ahouse….the core of the future rainbow warriors arrive friday at the hnl airport. you should hangout there to get a birds eye view of “…who’s coming for dinner?”

    probably hawaiian airlines.

careful where you tread as you might run over the little birdie.

  93. Kazz April 14, 2010 3:04 pm

BEST PLACES TO SIT AT SOFTBALL STADIUM:

Personally I like ANYWHERE outside the net. The net is behind home plate.

General admission and free admission = first come, first serve.

  94. al April 14, 2010 3:14 pm

all cif southern division 3A first teamers include:

    trevor wiseman
    jordan coleman
    and
the league’s co-mvp is keith shamburger.

  95. al April 14, 2010 3:17 pm

    kazz…speaking about nets.

doesn’t it annoy you when on weekends at every busy corner there seems to be some club/team soliciting donations with those fish nets?

i’d rather buy a girl scout cookie, get my car washed, or buy a pool ticket when helping some kind of fundraiser. at least they are working for it.

Bess won’t be giving up his #15 jersey number for new #1 WR Marshall.

Brandon Marshall was just made a $50 million man, but the agent for Dolphins wideout Davone Bess says all the money in the world couldn’t take away Bess’ number 15.

“His No. 15 jersey is not for sale. Davone entered the league with it and will finish with it,” agent Kenny Zuckerman said in an email to our buddy Alex Marvez at FOXSports.com .

“I told Davone we can probably name our price, especially with the contract Brandon just signed,” Zuckerman said. “If I had anything to do with it, bidding would have opened at $500,000.”

  98. Kazz April 14, 2010 3:25 pm

    Al,

I haven’t seen that since a little league baseball team was doing it at the corner of Kam Hwy and Acacia Rd in Pearl City.

Wonder what happened to that team???

  99. NYUH April 14, 2010 3:28 pm

    Garret:

Reminds me of Adm Pointdexter’s (yes, of Irangate fame) attempt to set up a futures market at DARPA on terrorist events, believing in the power of the market to aggregate expert opinion and predict future events. Instead of reporting, newspapers could predict the news.

Oh right, Pointdexter got fired for that.

Oh well, how about a pool for our predictions of UH games and HA gets to keep a cut?

The newspaper industry has been hit hard by the declining ad market and the drop in subscribers. The Philadelphia newspapers are the first in the US newspaper industry to launch a legal online betting service. This is an interesting way to get another revenue stream for newspapers…

  100. Slugger April 14, 2010 3:31 pm

Wandering around town today after practice…

Spotted Liz Chun & Mike Cherry at Ward Ctr. I went to the Rainbowtique to buy a pink t-shirt. Nothing in pink for the guys. You could…buy a pink polo & use one of the “H” UH logo patches to make it a team shirt. It think the patches are iron-on kine. … Saw Brian Kajiyama at Sam’s. …

    http://www.kaleo.org/climbing-the-polls-three-students-compete-for-asuh-presidency-1.2222574

After reading about the three candidates the student that impresses me the most is Andrew Itsuno. Totally impressive. His ideas and the major issues that he’s running on conveys major league leadership, visionary and intelligence qualities.

    Taken from kaleo–

His No. 1 priority is to protect the university’s budget. Itsuno plans to set up tables around campus staffed with experienced volunteers to help students write testimony to be submitted to the Legislature.

His other major platform is to lower textbook costs. To accomplish this, Itsuno has looked at models from the University of Michigan, the University of California system, Princeton and other universities. He plans to set up a student book-exchange program, which would enable students to sell their books directly to other students.

His third platform is to make student fees “responsible and transparent,” especially pertaining to new proposed fees.

“I will ensure that that student fees benefit students and they get the services that they pay for,” he said.

Itsuno is strongly opposed to the proposed athletics fee, unless “the administration and the athletics department show that it benefits the students and the students support that fee,” he said.

    BleedGreen808,

Looks like a Slot lined up in a Wing position.
Earlier in the video get #70 lined up as a TE in a redzone situation but all he does is cut the DE.
Don’t think it’s part of the regular scheme though.

(The Former Coach used a TE once and even threw to him…then he shipped him to Cal as a DE. 😉 )

  164. Jason April 14, 2010 9:19 pm

I’m not supporting one candidate over another, but from everything I’ve seen on Facebook, it seems the only people who are currently supporting Jett Jasper are those involved in athletics (e.g., Brian Kajiyama). Everyone else seems to be supporting Andrew Itsuno.

Of course, what I see on Facebook isn’t a strong indicator of the way the vote will really go. Then again, not many people vote anyways. This seems to be one of the most talked about races I’ve seen in a while. Or maybe it’s just that everyone is on Facebook now. 😛

    papajoe2…
first of all, what happened to papajoe1?

okay, getting serious now. rob demello announced the signing of vander joaquim and then went on to say that the gibber will announce the 2010 class sometime tomorrow.

if you are like me, i am stil crossing my fingers for the sengalese twins.

  169. Stephen Tsai April 14, 2010 9:31 pm

I like itsuno’s proposal to have a book-exchange program among the students.
But I don’t think he’s being very transparent about student fees. You know, of course, UH does charge a student-activity fee, which goes to Campus Center.
And I’m pretty sure that he shouldn’t
be taking credit for a $35 million project that will begin this summer. If the project is being built this summer, that means it has been lobbied for years and years. And certainly any capital-improvement projects were proposed by the Chancellor’s office, and the Regents and then the Legislature.
Jett’s proposal about parking seemed kind of confusing, too.
I think they need to have a good old-fashioned debate.

  170. al April 14, 2010 9:34 pm

    ahouse…just so you know.

whitey is off island for another week. he went to check on his calamungai farm.

  171. Kekoa April 14, 2010 9:38 pm

Momona ~ Sad situation. Gotta wait for the smoke to clear…(cough…).

  172. Stephen Tsai April 14, 2010 9:47 pm

The trouble with the ASUH presidency is that it doesn’t have much power.
It doesn’t have a say on the Legislature’s distribution of funds to UH. If the Guv and Leg say there’s no money, there’s no money.
It doesn’t have a say on transferrable credits. I mean, yeah, UH should accept math classes from Stanford. But is somebody going to go over every curriculum from every college and determine what equates to UH’s core programs? Good luck.
And, yeah, books have been overpriced for years. Shoot, $20 for that thin thing that Jeff Portnoy wrote? Or, worse, $100 for a journalism book? Puh-leeze. Students always had the ability to sell their books to their friends. But think of it this way: Somebody at the top of the pyramid is going to lose out. If you buy a $100 book, you’re not going to sell it to someone for $25. So somebody loses money along the chain.

  173. al April 14, 2010 9:47 pm

    ahouse…whoa you lippy today no?

  174. Stephen Tsai April 14, 2010 9:49 pm

  178. al April 14, 2010 9:58 pm

now if nebraska would release the almeida guy from his early loi we could have the portuguese (speaking) triple towers in the house.

  179. labrat April 14, 2010 10:01 pm

    the poor mans friend.

  180. labrat April 14, 2010 10:03 pm

Why does the almeida guy need a release from nebraska?

  181. Jason April 14, 2010 10:06 pm

Seems to me that the ASUH presidency is valuable in that it gets you in the door. Rep. Takai was ASUH president. Grant Teichmann was ASUH president, now he’s in the student seat with the BOR. Way back in the days, there was Tommy Kaulukukui, Nelson Doi.

  182. Jason April 14, 2010 10:09 pm

Then again, I think you can argue that those individuals didn’t need the ASUH presidency to make a prominent name for themselves. But I bet it didn’t hurt.

  183. al April 14, 2010 10:12 pm

he signed an nli/loi during the early signing period with nebraska. that is binding unless nebraska lets him off the hook.

only if a new head coach came in would he have the option. at this time nebraska must be steaming because roese already dragged joaquim over the pacific to hawaii. i don’t think he’d be happy with losing another one of his recruits.

afterall, nebraska has now lost roese their top recruiting assistant, joaquim, and earlier three scholarship players left the team at the end of the season.

most coaches would release a disgruntled recruit but losing five guys in one year does not help the coaches position especially when they haven’t been doing well.

  184. labrat April 14, 2010 10:13 pm

    thanks al.

    Stephen Tsai:

    April 14th, 2010 at 9:31 pm

Jasper and Itsuno can have the debate on the football field or the weight room as far as I am concerned… 😎

    Then again I haven’t been a student since 2004.

  192. Kazz April 14, 2010 11:20 pm

Im spending too much time on this Power In Pink thing for softball this weekend.

Just halfway done with the pink dying process after giving up on finding additional pink stuff. (THANKS TO MYKI FOR THE BREAST CANCER BRACELET AT PRACTICE!!!)

Now I’m waiting to turn my white UA wristbands into pink ones………….

Any minute now I will realize this weekend will probably be the FIRST and ONLY time I will wear them this year at least.

In the rush to support the Wahine this weekend, don’t forget that there’s also a football practice at 3 pm this Saturday. Protector and I will be going to the practice before we head on over to see Our Ladies whop LaTech upside the head – figuratively speaking, of course. DrDoc will join us around 5 pm.

QUESTION: Does one have to be around a computer in order to listen to the Bowsball play SacState this weekend? All I have is a big old Dell desktop which I certainly cannot carry around with me; however, I can carry a radio.

BTW – Jett Jasper did not get past the initial screening for the student seat on the UH Board of Regents. Maybe he should consider running for either the Legislature or the City Council – if not this fall, then in 2012.

Speaking of the Legislature – your support is needed to influence the Conference Committee hashing over the budget with respect to the $25+ million in proposed CIP allocations for Aloha Stadium and the UHM Athletic Complex. Will post updates tomorrow including information on how to track down your state senator and representative as well as the Conference Committee members.

The journey is an integral part of the college football experience and one of the reasons UH suffers in attendance. Of course people drive to Aloha stadium but its not a pilgrimage.

“You [still] need to have the ability to drive to each other’s campus,” one former major-college athletic director said, “and really hate each other.”

I like the article(s) about the secondary spending extra time on aggressive take-aways! We’ll need a few against the Trojans.

  220. Gail Oberer April 26, 2010 12:03 am

Your publish is really very good, most from the time when I visit weblogs they’re total crap as well as the posts are authored purely for seek out engine targeted traffic. But within your situation this is incredibly great, straightforward and simple.

Hi this post was great and I think you are very competent (i hope this is the right word, I’m from germany)! Actually I study computer-science in berlin and I want to make my master-degree in your country! (to learn the language and so on). I would export some special and high-priced hardware from germany to sell it in your country but I need a market like ebay or http://dimida.de to promote this hardware (its pc stuff). Do you know some plattforms in your language/ country? I thank you!
