‘Inserts of aloha’

Five UH football coaches return to Hawaii today after completing evaluation trips on the West Coast.

The past week was considered an evaluation period, meaning the coaches were allowed to watch practices and games, and meet with coaches, teachers and counselors. But they were not allowed to have official face-to-face visits with prospects.

The UH coaches estimated they watched more than 80 games or practices. Going to the schools, according to the coaches, is a process known as “inserts of aloha.”

The calendar will be adjusted this coming week. Tomorrow is considered a “Tuesday,” with video reviews at 7 a.m. and practice at 8 a.m.

Carried over from the previous blog:

#257 Al (RE: Warrior Basketball Experience)…good idea’s…in addition, a two minute interview with the coach BEFORE THE GAME would also give the fan’s a feeling for his thoughts about our opponent and what to look for.

…and yeah, especially for us on the neighbor islands, we miss the player introductions!

  10. Michigan Warrior November 14, 2010 9:07 am

Someone pointed out Utah’s schedule last week… a bit overrated to have been at #5, going into that TCU game. Good to see Notre Dame roll over them yesterday.

Thank you one and all for the kind words in the previous blog.

I did receive absolution from the NCAA several years after the event even though I told their representative that (1) I was unrepentant and (2) as I had just been elected to the Symphony board, that I would now corrupt the cello players!

Whether it was deliberate or just coincidental, after my election to the board, the symphony went on strike.

Bye weeks sure make Saturdays feel like something is missing. All the build-up to Saturday also is lost. At least that gave more time and media attention to the basketball team, which is off to a nice start.

  16. Garret November 14, 2010 9:15 am

    Tom Mui,

I knew a lot about the story but never knew about the symphony going on strike after you were elected to the board. Pretty funny.

I put the idea about C-USA and the WAC6 on my blog since it was too long to post here. For those who wish to read it, you can get to it from the address below, but I’d prefer comments here instead of my blog. I have to approve every comment on my blog and I only check it once per week or less.

  23. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc November 14, 2010 9:28 am

    From yesterday’s blog:

GARRET: It’s not the Chair of the Economic Development & Technology committee but the Chair of the Education Committee.

The landscape at the Legislature -at least in the State Senate – as well as with the upcomig Abercrombie Administration has changed -perhaps most muchly for the betterment of UH with respect to the former and definitely with the latter. Will post details later on today – including information on how and who to contact.

Unfortunately, a key Senate member has changed her mind about what she wants to do so it doesn’t look as if I will be working with her & her staff on anything having to do with education – or any other issue, for the matter. Fortunately, there are others who will be able to step in to some extent.

That’s why the Senate Money Man – Senator David Ige – and the yet-2-b-named committee Higher Education, Judiciary, and Finance Committee Chairs are so important to what will happen next.

The State House is still not organized; the above committee chairs will not be announced until the leadership has been selected.

Will return to this topic later on – I have a MAJOR fundraiser to get ready for which starts at 10:30 am. The details were posted in the moderated #62 above which means you never got a chance to read it so click my name for details of today’s event. We’ll also be servng free coffee & munchies from my favorite local bakery so please come by.

There were plenty of students at last night’s game – and a few even hung around for the Central Michigan/Montana State game. One of the members of the Staidum Authority who sits about ten feet away from us actually caught a tee-shirt during the lower bowl throwing giveaway.

    Back sometime this evening.

Your idea that you posted on your blog is simply amazing and very well thought out. I see absolutely nothing wrong with it, because it makes a lot of sense.

As Tom Mui states, though, it might be tough to persuade C-USA.

  33. Derek November 14, 2010 10:01 am

I need a dose of UH football.

After watching the Fresno St.-Nevada game off and on last night I kept telling myself that it shows Hawaii is a much better team than those renegades. I was watching the UH basketball team on PPV and this team is fun to watch. It is obvious this edition is light years better than last year. Why?

    1) Better 3 point shooting.

    2) Less turnovers

    3) Better athleticism

    4) Better style of play

These guys play hard and will only get better. Arnold plays 10 guys and will get a boost when Brumfield gets well. I want to see Coleman play, unless he’s a candidate for a redshirt year. It will be an exciting year for basketball. Bo Barnes is unconscious.

  34. Garret November 14, 2010 10:03 am

coleman is redshirting unless injuries reduce the roster. however, with salter’s speedy recovery, it appears he will redshirt this year.

brumfield is a long way from returning to the floor.

i believe one of the keys to this year’s team is the discipline factor. they play with more intensity and play as a team. too many big heads last year that didn’t have a big game. credit the gibber for his tough love style of coaching.

  37. Support Rainbow Wahine Softball November 14, 2010 10:11 am

It’s good timing that the football bye week was on the same week as the debut of UH Rainbow Warrior Basketball. VERY IMPORTANT.

Men’s basketball is SUPPOSED to be the second-tier money maker for a college athletic department, even though at Hawaii the Rainbow Wahine volleyball team is doing THEIR share… 😉

But yes, hope word starts spreading around town, ’cause you know local people like to TALK, this team, barring injury, should be exciting with each passing game.

    Good morning Tsai-kos!

Attended the game last night with the screechers. This team is soooo much more fun to watch than last few previous editions.

Kazz – we didn’t move last night, but we’ll usually move down. I wish they would sell student (HS and under) tickets for the lower bowl. I would pay for those. Might get more families and more excitement “downstairs”.

    Congrats to SteveM.

    Jim Leahey or Russell Yamanoha.

Jim Leahey can still call a good softball and baseball game.

I respect Jim Leahey. I’ve been lucky enough to converse with him on a few occasions, most recently about UH basketball a few months ago. He’s sharp with his opinions and his arguments and VERY articulate.

However, the missteps in his play by play calling have been hard to listen to and it seems like it has increased drastically in the past two-three years. It’s confusing to the casual listener who may not be aware of the little, BUT important things like a player’s name or the position they play.

Russell Yamanoha did well last night.

Bobby Curran calls a quick basketball game as well. Regardless of what I think about his comments sometimes during his radio show, fair is fair. Curran knows basketball and can call a good game.

  43. Stephen Tsai November 14, 2010 10:27 am

    bye week blues?

kind of weird this past week. almost felt like the football season was over already. time to refill your bubble with fresh air and look forward to an undefeated finish on this last leg of the season.

didn’t it kind of swooosh by so fast so far?

we could end up 11-3 placing ourselves in a great spot every time they talk realignment. looking ahead, we should be able to go 11-3 again next year.

    much to cheer for.

besides i did lose five pounds by not having to tailgate two saturdays in a row.

  47. al November 14, 2010 10:40 am

play by play candidates of the future…

first choice for me would be robert kekaula. however, i don’t think his current kitv contract would allow him that latitude. who knows, i believe it is his dream to be the voice of the warriors. job security though is sketchy as that position would be year to year only.

second choice would be kanoa leahey. bright, quick on his feet (mouth), and the like. he’s been doing a great job with the hs football and basketball was his sport at iolani. he’s also played baseball in his days of his youth. and he is a leahey.

both have great voices, intellect, personality, and passion for sports.

    Tom Mui”

I thought Wally Fujiyama was the only one who got a life time ban from UH sports!

Now, we have 2 very distinguished gentlemen who were accorded this HONOR by the NCAA and basically for the same reason – helping UH athletes who have no $$$ to pay for their legal defense.

  54. A-House November 14, 2010 11:15 am

    Garret:

Like your idea a lot and should be considered by UHAD – hope Jim D reads your dissertation on C-USA 18!!

Surprised, or did I just miss it, but no mention of using UH as a recruting tool by all C-USA teams bidding for talented players in all sports.

Non-revenue sports can be “conformed” into different divisions to accomodate them.

Getting rid of Benson is a given – what has he done for the WAC? But, a heck of a lot for BSU in the past 5-6 years. Surprised that BSU did not have a WAC logo on their football jersey for the Virginia Tech game – did they have it for regular WAC games?

  55. A-House November 14, 2010 11:17 am

Warriors upward movement on the “polls” may be attributed to USC keep winning, as UH played them tough – most yards and points given up – and Colorado finally won!

  64. diehard fan November 14, 2010 11:51 am

Bobby C. does a good job on basketball radio games. One suggestion is for him to say who is coming out when subs go in. He has been only saying who went in. Also does a good job on football, but once in awhile when an unusual play occurs, he forgets to describe fully what is happening on the field and say many yards were gained, etc.

#14 Mr. Tom Mui, very funny about the symphony bowl !

I saw Wayne Crowe a month ago and he holds you in the HIGHEST regards !

Your representation of my fellow rainbow brothers during that tulmultuous season

has made an impact in their lives in which they have gone on and help others during

their most crisis situation. Your stand for JUSTICE did a lot for all of them as today

they are living productive lives and making a positive IMPACT in their communities.

So kind sir on behalf of Packy Ryan, Gary Gray, George Ritter, Melton Welts, Bob Manker,

Tom Barker and Eddie Torres we SALUTE and HONOR you in the name of justice for

young athletes who really needed legal representation at that time and through your dedicated volunteer service you made the names mentioned above provide SERVICE

to help and aid others through out their older life time experience.

    Mahalo for your GREATNESS !

  67. Garret November 14, 2010 12:10 pm

    Pomai,

Awesome job with that map! One minor thing is that you should switch UTEP to the West and La Tech to the Central and things will make more sense geographically. The big problem that WAC teams always complained about was road trips to both Honolulu and Ruston–that is cut in half with the change, and teams can bus between Las Cruces and El Paso.

By the way, Houston and Rice are inside the same dot. That is why wafan counted one less. I guess you could put two dots side-by-side in Houston to eliminate that confusion.

  68. Committed Road Warrior November 14, 2010 12:26 pm

    Garret,

So given your idea for a C-USA 18 and the map that Pomai linked upstream, I would think that this setup would be conducive to arranging a “5-2-2” conference schedule.

That is, the 6 teams in each division (West, Central, East) would face each other every year in conference (the 5), with the final four conference games split between two teams from the other two divisions (the 2-2)…one road game and one home game against teams from the Central and East divisions (in UH’s case).

  69. A-House November 14, 2010 12:30 pm

    WAC Men’s BB:

Granted it’s early in the season, but unusual that all teams won last night.

Protend of good things to come this season to raise the WAC RPI? Perhaps, UH can crash the NCAA party in 2010 with USU and NMSU. Of course, Fresno always play tough, but their record will be used for the MWC. I find this odd as they are still part of the WAC. Goodness, how the NCAA minds “wander”.

Garret has been the most vocal advocate of having “good” football and basketball teams to raise points for consideration in asking teams to join a conference or make others want to join their conference.

  72. A-House November 14, 2010 12:34 pm

Maybe, Jim D should consider going to a 12 game football season to give UH another “bye” week. The rest could help players heal from injuries and extra week can be used by coaching staff to increase the capabilities of “non-starters” and decrease their weaknesses.

  73. Committed Road Warrior November 14, 2010 12:35 pm

    Garret,

In retrospect, the travel situation with UH in the WAC is suboptimal already (and will still be bad once UTSA and TX State comes on)…it wouldn’t be any better for UH if it had to budget for what is equivalent to a trip to Ruston every year as well as a far-flung conference road game to Huntington, WV or Greenville, NC that would be necessary as part of the “5-2-2” conference schedule I previously mentioned.

I like the idea of a C-USA 18, I’m just trying to think it further with regards to potential conference schedules, or even how to determine the conference football champion in a 3-division setup like that.

  74. Pomai November 14, 2010 12:36 pm

Garret yes the two are both in one dot, and LaTech should be a central but just wanted to show which schools are to be added. I think this make sense and would be good for all the schools. Would also be good a few years down the line if all the schools kept getting better.

  79. Garret November 14, 2010 12:50 pm

    CRW,

Right now C-USA plays 8 conference games and I based my assumptions on that, but a 5-2-2 format does make sense also like you point out. I’m not sure which would be better for the conference…that is something that people like ESPN and the current C-USA12 would get to decide.

I wonder if the NCAA would allow for *2* rounds of a conference playoff. NFL-style with 1 wildcard and 3 division winners, which would give a TV-friendly 3 conference postseason games. Otherwise, you pointed out another major flaw…3 divisions and only 2 spots in the conference title game. So, that could either be a huge positive or (more likely) another reason why this could not happen.

  80. ro November 14, 2010 1:12 pm

Uh Basketball is better this yr than last yr is because they play defense.

  81. A-House November 14, 2010 1:19 pm

This year’s men’s BB team brings visions of the AC Carter and Alika Smith start of 11 -0 and they beat Kansas, then ranked #3, in the Rainbow Classic final. Perhaps, the same could happen in 2010 and UH beat Butler in the championship game!!!

Thereafter, when AC’s back began bothering him and Alika got the “turf toe”, things changed and their fortunes went down hill. On senior night, you could not help but notice Alika’s “black ‘n blue” toe and foot – Mrs A-House and Midori said it looked really bad and painful. Since then, every time a “turf toe” is mentioned, I think of Alika and how painful it must be.

  82. Annoddah Dave November 14, 2010 1:21 pm

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

garret’s idea makes too much sense and is too logically laid out from the financial perspective. Benson has too much at stake to give it up to CUSA. Actually, let’s hope that the commissioner of CUSA is able to read garret’s post. Unfortunately, UH cannot do anything without the will and consent of the other 5. However, if CUSA makes invitations to the WAC6, then that’s another story. I like it…I hope that it has a chance to become reality.

  89. A-House November 14, 2010 2:17 pm

    Garret:

Maybe the C-USA teams can play an 11 game season, use the 12th game as a division game, and ask for a 13th game waiver for the championship game. 5 within division, 1 each game out of division allowing each team to schedule up to 4 out of conference teams. This would lessen the travel burden for teams travelling to Hawaii or East Coast.

All teams not qualifying for the championship games get their fair share of the TV allocation for championship games income, after expenses, for the loss of a 12th game.

3 division champs with another who has the best record – need to set up a “tie-breaker” system (just in case). Games to be held at the home field of the top 2 teams and championship game at a neutral field – Cowboy stadium which is centrally located. All members would be allocated a set # of tickets. This venue can also be used as a recruiting tool for the conference.

The Hawaii Exemption is a rule enacted by the NCAA that allows Division I football teams that play at Hawaii to schedule a 13th regular-season game. The rule also allows the Warriors to play an extra game.

The addition of the 13th game, usually a home game, means extra revenue for those teams which can be used to offset the travel costs. However, teams can also schedule an extra off-week if they desire.

Does that mean that a team can come to Hawaii and play “any” other team and get that 13th game exemption? If so, can we hold an elimination game here?

  94. madeinhawaii November 14, 2010 2:35 pm

For WAC football survival; desparation situation:

Heck – invite Temple to join the WAC for football only.

Temple is in the odd-numbered 7-team MAC East.

Hawaii can pay for their travel expense to Hawaii.

The WAC can partially subsidize to other destinations.

Only one institution to deal with.

hmmm …. I wonder if Hawaii fans can put up the Herrrm.

    heh heh heh.

While Garret’s idea of merging conferences looks like it would stabilize things for UH which while be a good thing it appears to benefit the other WAC teams even more. I also like the idea of doubling the Hawaii Bowl payout and partner with the PAC-10. Since the payout is $328,000 with no requirement to purchase tickets doubling the payout seems doable.

    More Bye Week Banter

For those proponents of a playoff system to replace the BCS you may be interested (amused, baffled, bewildered?) in the selection criteria involved in the D3 playoffs and its own set of acronyms and terminology. (SoS, oSoS, ooSoS, RRO, OWP, OOWP, etc.)

    http://web1.ncaa.org/web_files/champ_handbooks/football/2010/10_3_football.pdf

Also interesting is the “discussions” related to the selections. A sampling is here:

    http://d3blogs.com/d3football/2010/11/14/2010-playoff-bracket-is-released/#comments

Keep in mind that there is no “money” involved in D3 with only the championship game being nationally televised (this year on ESPN-U as opposed to ESPN2 in previous years) and most venues seating around 3-5000 at tickets about $15 each.

    Hey Steve,

Are you still hating on Mafua?

I was listening on the radio to the Nevada game and just realized the last game at home is coming up. You should be the first one to give her a lei.

I saw Mafua’s family. Dude, I dare you to say some of the things you posted to her family’s face. I got my money on the family. Not even I am stupid enough to say the type of things you said about her. DUH.

And CL is still working for the SA? Correct me if I’m wrong but you DID say she was not going to be working for SA starting from October. I dunno but seems to me she is still blogging and reporting.

    Man up Steve!

  121. Matt November 14, 2010 6:27 pm

While Garret’s idea makes some sense and would be a better situation for UH than the “new” WAC, I have doubts that we would be able to convince the other five WAC schools and Conference USA to go along with it. Not only do the other schools support Benson, they would be hesitant to take less conference money for the first few years. For it to work, I think UH should first try to get Conference USA to tentatively agree to the deal (Hopefully the C-USA commissioner can keep his mouth shut). Then we should convince the other WAC schools that if they don’t go along with it, UH is going to going to leave the WAC by going independent in football (or joining the MWC in football only) and joining the Big West in other sports; thus scuttling the WAC as a football conference.

We need to dictate our own future rather than have it dictated to us. Be the bully rather than the bullied. Be a leader rather than wait to be led. Still, if we make that threat, we better have the guts to carry it out. We are the only school left in the WAC that brings any real value in football. If our Men’s BB team continues to improve under Gib Arnold, we will have value in the two money sports. We should use that to our advantage.

Or, we can continue to evaluate our situation and let another opportunity pass us by.

Update from San Antonio. It sounds like UTSA may not be a full WAC member in 2012 if the WAC can get a waiver.

UTSA AD Lynn Hickey just stated on local sports show that they currently have 4 open slots for 2012 schedule that could be filled with current WAC schools. Then play a full WAC schedule in 2013. But (& she did say “BUT”) with the WAC needing 8 full member football playing schools in 2012 , it’s very likely that UTSA & the WAC would seek waivers from the NCAA for UTSA to move up to full membership. Fastest transition to FBS status in NCAA history. IMO they already know (85%-90% sure) what path they are going to be taking.

That cruise ship out of LA that had to be towed to San Diego has really boosted San Diego’s economy. Not only did San Diego get a lot of nice PR when the people got off the ship during perfect San Diego weather, but all of them were housed in San Diego for a night. Most importantly, most of the 1,167 crew members are staying in San Diego and getting meal stipends (San Diego restaurants must love that during a normally slow time for tourism!) until they figure out how long it will take to repair the cruise ship:

    For historical and economical purposes…

UH aggressively seeks Obama presidential library

The University of Hawaii is well into early preparations — including preliminary searches for potential sites, talks with National Archives officials and deliberations on what if any new academic center might accompany an Obama library and museum.

An Obama presidential library and museum would be a unique resource for UH students, scholars and tourists, said Reed Dasenbrock, vice chancellor for academic affairs at UH-Manoa.

It also would be an economic driver, he said, citing the $1.5 billion in activity and 300,000 annual visitors that ex-President Bill Clinton’s library has brought to Little Rock, Ark., since 2005.

“If I’ve been to Honolulu many times, why will I come back the eighth or ninth time? We do believe that (an Obama library) would be an additional attraction here that would bring repeat visitors as well as many first-time visitors,” Dasenbrock added.

Also in UH’s favor is the fact that Obama’s parents and sister are graduates, although the president himself graduated from Columbia and received his law degree from Harvard.

Hey – great weblog, just looking around some weblogs, seems a pretty nice platform you are using. I’m presently using Drupal for a few of my sites but looking to change one of them over to a platform very much the same to yours as a trial run. Anything in particular you would advise about it?

Law enforcement has the software to do what you want, but unless you make it an issue they won’t want to put their donuts down and help you out. They’ll probably say there is not enough damage monetarily or that they can’t investigate because it’s not a felony. I’m sure they will come up with some reason.

Thanks for putting up this article. I’m unquestionably frustrated with struggling to search out germane and rational comment on this subject. Everybody nowadays goes to the very far extremes to either drive home their viewpoint that either: everyone else in the planet is wrong, or two that everyone but them does not really understand the situation. Many thanks for your concise, applicable insight.moncler coats
